1. A total of 7960 Cobb and Ross broiler males were reared on various photoperiods or continuous illumination in two trials to 35 or 40 d. Tibial breaking strength was measured in both, and tibial ash content determined in the first of the two trials. 2. Tibial breaking strength was significantly affected by photoperiod, body weight, testicular weight, and genotype. Although peak bone strength occurred at about 7 h for Ross and at 12 h for Cobb, with reductions in strength for both shorter and longer photoperiods than these peaks, the removal of body weight effects showed that tibial breaking strength was negatively correlated with photoperiod per se. However, after removal of photoperiodic influences, breaking strength was positively correlated with both body weight and testicular weight. 3. Ross birds had greater tibial breaking strengths than Cobb, irrespective of whether the comparisons were made at the same photoperiod, the same body weight, or the same ash content. 4. Ash content increased according to the logarithm of photoperiod, but was unrelated to body weight. Tibial breaking strength increased with ash content. Ash contents were similar for Ross and Cobb birds. 5. Despite the significant differences in breaking strength and ash content, there were no broken bones or signs of leg abnormality in any of the 300 birds sampled. Tibial breaking strength data may therefore be of limited value in assessing the benefits of photoperiod to welfare in modern broilers.

1. Ross broiler breeders were reared at a nominal illuminance of 15, 20 or 45 lux and transferred to a nominal illuminance of 25, 55 or 70 lux at 20 weeks. 2. There were no significant interactions between the response to illuminance during rearing and in lay. This means that it matters not whether illuminance is increased, decreased or held constant on transfer to the laying house, provided it equals or exceeds the biological optimum for satisfactory egg production. 3. Whilst there were no significant effects of illuminance in either the rearing period or laying periods on egg numbers, peak rate of lay, terminal rate of lay, egg mass output or liveability, meta-analyses of these and other data indicated biological optima of 15 lux during rearing and 7 lux in the laying period. Birds reared at 45 lux had a lower mean egg weight (and earlier sexual maturity) than birds reared at 15 lux, and hens illuminated at 25 lux in the laying period laid more eggs on the floor than at either 55 or 70 lux. 4. Typical primary breeder recommendations of 10-20 lux during rearing and 30-60 lux in lay are appropriate for floor-housed birds; however, an illuminance of 7 lux could be used for caged birds, subject to welfare-code compliance.

1. Data from 9 experiments in which broiler breeder pullets had been photostimulated at two or more ages were integrated to produce a model to predict age at 50% egg production following a single increase in photoperiod during rearing. 2. It was clear that the photosexual response in broiler breeders was strongly influenced by the feed allowance and hence the rate of prepubertal growth. Regressions for birds given either a constant photoperiod or a single increase indicated that mean age at 50% lay advances by 2 d for every 100-g increase in body weight at 20 weeks. 3. The general response of broiler breeders was similar to that previously reported for egg-type pullets, but with important changes in the ages at which the birds progressed from one physiological state to the next, depending on body weight. 4. Broiler breeders, unlike modern egg-type pullets, exhibit juvenile photorefractoriness and, depending on their body weight, require up to 20 weeks to dissipate this (faster growth allows quicker dissipation). As a consequence, a group of birds grown to a typical weight of 2.1 kg at 20 weeks do not start to be photoresponsive until about 10 weeks and are not uniformly responsive until 19 or 20 weeks. A transfer to a stimulatory photoperiod before a bird has dissipated photorefractoriness causes a delay of about 3 weeks in its sexual development, and this results in a bimodal distribution of ages at maturity when a flock is photostimulated between 10 and 20 weeks. 5. Once photosensitive, the response of broiler breeders to an increment in photoperiod is between 0.50 and 0.65 of that observed in ISA Brown egg-type pullets. However, a flock of broiler breeders with typical feed restriction starts to mature spontaneously under the influence of the initial photoperiod from about 25 weeks. 6. There is a difference of only 1 to 3 d in age at 50% egg production between a flock transferred to 11 or 12 h followed by further increases to 15 or 16 h and one increased abruptly to one of these photoperiods, and so this model can be used to predict maturity in a commercial flock of birds even though they are likely to be given a stepped, rather than a single, increase in photoperiod.

1. Brown-egg pullets were reared on 8-h photoperiods and temporarily transferred at 80 d of age to 14-h photoperiods for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 d. Controls were either maintained on 8 h or permanently transferred to 14 h at 80 d. 2. Pullets given 8 or 12 long days matured 8-9 d earlier than constant 8-h controls, but 22-23 d later than pullets transferred permanently to long days. Mean age at first egg for the groups given 2, 4, 6 or 10 d of 14-h days were not significantly different from the 8-h controls. The mean weight of first egg and body weight at first egg for the temporarily-photostimulated groups were not significantly different from constant 8-h controls, but egg weights were > or = 5.1 g and body weights at first egg > or = 200 g heavier than the birds transferred permanently to 14 h. 3. It is concluded that up to 6 temporary long days may be given (from 80 d of age) without affecting the timing of sexual maturity, but that the provision of 8 or more long days will accelerate sexual development, thought not to the extent of a permanent transfer, in most birds within a flock. A regression analysis of the ages at which the first and last birds in the groups given 6, 8, 10 or 12 long days matured suggested that about 20 d of photostimulation are required to achieve a mean age at first egg similar to that of birds permanently transferred to long days.

1. Cobb broiler breeders were fed to achieve typical body weight targets (2.1 kg at 20 weeks) on 6-, 8-, 10- or 16-h fully or intermittently illuminated (Biomittent) photoperiods in controlled-environment housing to 20 weeks, then moved to open-sided housing and 16-h photoperiods to 60 weeks. 2. At each photoperiod, birds given Biomittent lighting had heavier body weights up to 42 d, lighter body weights between 49 and 140 d, but similar body weights at sexual maturity. 3. Irrespective of lighting type, birds given 8-h photoperiods matured 3 to 4 d earlier than 6- or 10-h birds, but all matured=15 d before 16-h birds. 4. There were no significant differences between the 6-, 8- or 10-h groups for total eggs, mean egg weight or egg mass output, but all three produced=13 more, but =0.5 g smaller, eggs and =0.83 kg more egg mass to 60 weeks than 16-h birds. The proportion of abnormally large eggs was low (0.73/bird) and similar for all lighting groups. Egg production for a given period after sexual maturity was similar for all groups, and so differences among groups could be explained by the differences in age at sexual maturity.

Growing pullets were maintained on 14-h photoperiods and given diets supplemented with 25 mg of melatonin (MEL)/kg during the final 7 h of the photo-period to investigate the role of MEL in sexual development. Melatonin diets were fed to 70 d (to mimic a transfer from 7 to 14 h at 70 d), from 105 d onward (to mimic a transfer from 14 to 7 h at 105 d), or throughout the trial (to mimic constant 7-h photoperiods). Control birds, which were fed normal diets, were maintained on 7 or 14 h, transferred from 7 to 14 h at 70 d, or transferred from 14 to 7 h at 105 d. The MEL groups matured 6 to 11 d later than the constant 14-h controls. The group mimicking a transfer from 7 to 14 h matured 35 d later than photostimulated controls, the group mimicking a 14 to 7-h change at 105 d matured 41 d earlier than birds given a decrease in day length; the third group matured 13 d earlier than constant 7-h controls. Although these data suggest that the birds did not perceive the final 7 h of the photoperiod as being part of the night, when given MEL diets, residual plasma MEL during the first 7 h of the photoperiod was atypically high, possibly preventing an interpretation of day and night. However, continuously high plasma MEL did not result in birds responding as if in constant darkness, because birds transferred from darkness to 14 h at 70 d would not have matured at a similar time to birds changed from 14 h to darkness at 105 d. Plasma LH concentrations for birds mimicking a 7 to 14 h change at 70 d were not significantly different from constant 7-h controls after the transfer to normal diets. The later maturity of the experimental groups, compared with constant 14-h controls, clearly indicated that MEL had some influence over hypothalamic activity and gonadal development.

It is frequently recommended that commercial laying pullets are reared on step-down lighting regimens, rather than on constant short photoperiods, to help achieve BW targets during rear and optimal performance in lay. To evaluate the effectiveness of this strategy, Shaver White pullets were maintained on 8-h day lengths or given a step-down lighting regimen from 23 to 8 h over periods of between 1 and 15 wk. Other pullets, which were initially maintained on 8 h of light, were given an abrupt increase in day length prior to transfer to step-down lighting at various ages between 1 and 13 wk. All birds were given abrupt increments to 14 h at 18 wk and to 16 h at 20 wk to stimulate appetite and optimize uniformity of sexual development. Body weights at 6 and 12 wk were generally heavier and cumulative feed intakes to 6 wk were greater for birds given step-down lighting from 1 wk of age than for constant 8-h controls or birds given an initial period on 8-h day lengths prior to step-down lighting. Sexual maturity for birds on step-down lighting from 1 wk and for those on < or =5 wk of 8-h day lengths before transfer to step-down lighting was delayed by about a week compared with the constant 8-h controls or birds on 9 wk or more of 8-h day lengths before step-down lighting. These delays in sexual maturity resulted in a lower BW at 18 wk. Body weight uniformity at 18 wk was improved by step-down lighting, whether it was given from 1 wk or after a period of 8-h day lengths. Despite step-down lighting resulting in larger initial feed intakes and improved early growth, there was no significant improvement in egg numbers, egg weight, egg mass, feed intake, shell deformation, or albumen height compared with constant 8-h controls. Differences in egg output were generally the consequence of photoperiodically induced changes in sexual maturity.

1. A total of 240 Shaver White and 240 ISA Brown pullets that had been reared in multi-bird cages on a 10-h photoperiod, and maintained at a light intensity of 3 or 25 lux, or changed from 3 to 25 lux or from 25 to 3 lux at 9 or 16 weeks of age, were moved into individual-bird cages at 20 weeks and transferred to 15-h photoperiods at 25 lux. 2. In both breeds, birds transferred from 3 to 25 lux at 16 or 20 weeks laid significantly more eggs than birds maintained on the brighter intensity from one day or increased to it at 9 weeks. 3. Mean egg weight, shell deformation, albumen height, feed intake and body weight gain in lay were not significantly affected by the light intensity treatments during the rearing period. There was, however, a small, but significant, negative correlation of egg numbers with mean egg weight, although this only partially explained the difference in egg numbers. The differences in egg production were unrelated to rate of sexual maturation.

1. Shaver White and ISA Brown pullets were reared to 140 d in groups of 8 in cages on a 10-h photoperiod of incandescent light and maintained at an illuminance of 3 or 25 lux, or transferred from 3 to 25 lux or from 25 to 3 lux at 63 or 112 d of age. 2. There was no significant difference in sexual maturity, measured as eggs per 100 bird.d at 139 and 140 d, for ISA Brown maintained on 3 or 25 lux, but Shaver White pullets exposed to constant 3 lux matured significantly later than those maintained on 25 lux. 3. In Shaver Whites, sexual maturity was significantly delayed by an increase from 3 to 25 lux at 63 and 112 d, and advanced by a decrease from 25 to 3 lux at 112 d. Sexual maturity of ISA Browns was not significantly affected by a change in illuminance at 63 or 112 d, though responses were in the same direction as for Shaver Whites. 4. In both breeds, total feed consumed to 112 d was higher for birds on 3 lux than 25 lux, but lower between 112 d and 140 d when birds on 25 lux underwent rapid sexual development. In both breeds, body weight at 63 d was higher for birds exposed to 3 lux than 25 lux, but body weight gain thereafter was similar for the two light intensities. 5. In both breeds, plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentration at 63 and 112 d was lower in birds maintained on 3 lux than 25 lux. At 63 and 112 d, transfers from 25 to 3 lux depressed, whereas transfers from 3 to 25 lux at 63 d, but not at 112 d, increased plasma LH. 6. Advances or delays in sexual maturity induced by changes in illuminance were not correlated with differences in feed intake, body weight gain, or with changes in plasma LH. 7. One possible explanation for the inverse relationship between the direction of change in illuminance at 63 and 112 d in pullets exposed to a 10-h photoperiod and the age at which they became sexually mature is that changes in light intensity and/or spectral composition affect the entrainment of the circadian rhythm of photoinducibility, to effect a phase shift in the photoinducible phase and/or the responsiveness of phototransduction pathways.

1. Groups of ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 34, 44 or 54 d. In each group, 12 birds were injected on alternate days over a 12-d period starting 6 d before the change in photoperiod with beta-oestradiol-3-benzoate (1 mg/kg body weight) or with arachis oil vehicle (controls). Short-day controls were similarly injected from 28 to 40 d. Long-day (16 h) controls were also included in the trial but were not injected. Age at first egg (AFE) was recorded and plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations were measured around the time of oestradiol treatment. 2. Mean AFE for birds photostimulated at 34 d was not significantly different from short-day controls. Birds photostimulated at 44 and 54 d matured at similar ages but 3 weeks earlier than short-day controls (P0.05). 3. There was a tendency for oestradiol to advance AFE for birds photostimulated at 34 d (P=0.15) but to delay AFE following photostimulation at 44 d (P=0.23). Oestradiol significantly delayed AFE for the birds photostimulated at 54 d (P=0.01). 4. Plasma LH levels during 6 d of oestradiol injection but before transfer from 8- to 16-h photoperiods tended to fall between 28 and 34 d, were relatively constant between 38 and 44 d, but declined significantly between 48 and 54 d. Following photostimulation at 34 d, increases in plasma LH levels for oestradiol-injected birds were significantly greater than for controls. Oestradiol treatment had no significant effect on changes in plasma LH concentrations after photostimulation at 44 or 54 d. 5. This trial confirms previous work showing that pullets are unresponsive to photostimulation before 6 weeks of age. It also demonstrates that raising circulating oestrogen levels by injecting 0.5 mg/kg oestradiol benzoate on alternate days enhances the LH response to photostimulation at 34-d, but only very slightly sensitises a 34-d old bird to an increase in photoperiod which, 10 d later, is capable of advancing AFE in control birds by 24 d. Increased circulating oestrogen might be a factor which allows pullets to advance AFE in response to an increase in daylength.

Ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity in birds has been shown to be intrinsically involved in the selection of mates; UV may, therefore, also play a role in the establishment and maintenance of social hierarchies in intensively housed turkeys. Cereal seeds and straw are known to reflect UV, and turkeys may use these cues for foraging and exploratory behaviors. A series of trials was conducted to see if supplementation of the photoperiod (12 h at various white light intensities) with UV radiation (0.06 to 0.16 W/m2 at floor level) and regular supplies of straw to the litter allow a better recognition of individuals within a flock, enrich the environment by the provision of new pecking material and of radiation across the whole range of avian sensitivity, and, as a consequence, reduce the incidence of injurious pecking in male turkeys that have not been beak-trimmed, detoed, or desnooded. Body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency, and leg integrity were generally not significantly affected by UV supplementation and environmental enrichment. In contrast, the provision of UV radiation, simultaneous with a 12-h photoperiod of white light at intensities of70 lx to 5 wk and of 10 lx to 20 wk, and the regular addition of straw to the litter, significantly reduced the incidence of culling because of injurious pecking. However, complex interactions among UV supplementation, white light intensity, and material environmental enrichment precluded a simple recommendation to solve the problem of injurious pecking.

1. Responses to ultraviolet (UV) radiation were studied in two trials. In one trial, sexually mature pullets, that had been maintained on an 8L:16D regimen from 2 d of age, were exposed sequentially, for periods of 9 to 12 d, to a further 8 h of very dim visible light (VDV), to 8 h of UV radiation and, finally, to an extra 8 h of normal light (conventional 16L:8D). Individual ovipositions were recorded during the last 48 h of each treatment. In the second trial, sexually mature pullets which had been allowed to 'free-run' for 14 d under continuous normal illumination (LL), were given, in addition to the normal light, a 12-h period of UV radiation commencing at midday or midnight for a further 15 d. During the final 48 h oviposition times were recorded and 4 food intakes for each 12-h period were determined. 2. In trial 1, mean oviposition time under VDV and UV supplementation was not significantly different from that under the 8L:16D regimen. Transfer to a 16L:8D regimen altered mean time of oviposition by about 4 h. In trial 2, eggs continued to be laid almost at random in all groups. 3. Food intake was suppressed during the 12-h period of UV supplementation compared with that when the birds were not receiving UV. 4. It is concluded that the addition of 8 h of UV radiation (at the intensity used in these studies) to 8 h of normal light does not cause a phase shift in the timing of the 'open-period' for pre-ovulatory luteinising hormone release which determines the time of oviposition. Furthermore, the insertion of 12-h periods of UV into continuous illumination does not entrain egg laying. 5. The suppressing effect of UV on food intake but lack of influence on the timing of the ovulatory cycle suggests that UV (at the intensity used in this study) acts principally at the retinal level and, as a result, stimulates only behavioural responses in laying birds.

Layer strain pullets were reared on litter and given an 8-h photoperiod to 10 wk of age. They were then transferred to cages in which light intensity at the feed trough varied from 5 to 14 lx. Thirty birds continued on 8 h light (L):16 h dark (D) (negative controls), and another 30 birds were given 14L:10D (positive controls). Two other groups of 30 birds were given a regimen of 3 dim:8 L:3 dim:10 D with intensity during the dim phase ranging from 0.03 to 0.42 lx (very dim) or from 0.6 to 3.0 lx (marginal). Mean age at first egg (AFE) differed by 30 d between the positive and negative controls. Birds receiving very dim lighting matured 10 d earlier than the negative controls but 20 d later than positive controls. It is concluded that either the very dim light was itself nonstimulatory but had a phase shifting effect upon the biological clock that caused the 8-h normal light to fall partly in the photoinducible phase, or the first 3 h of very dim light was added to the bright phase to form an 11-h photoperiod. Birds in the top tier of the room with marginal supplementary lighting received 1.7 to 3.0 lx and matured at the same age as the positive controls, whereas those in the bottom tier received 0.6 to 0.9 lx and matured at the same age as the negative controls. Birds in the middle tier showed an intermediate AFE. It is concluded that the threshold intensity at the feed trough for white light stimulation of the photoperiodic mechanism in caged pullets lies between 0.9 and 1.7 lx. However, very dim lighting, below the threshold required for stimulation of a photoperiodic response, may shift the biological clock with unexpected consequences and, as a result, there is no known intensity of dim light that can be equated with darkness for all purposes.

1. ISA Brown pullets were transferred at 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 20.3 weeks of age from an 8 h photoperiod to an 8, 10, 13 or 16 h photoperiod. Plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration was measured at transfer at 7 and 14 d afterwards, and age at first egg (AFE) was recorded. 2. Plasma FSH concentration in pullets reared on constant 8 h photoperiods generally increased with age but with a trough at 12 weeks. Plasma FSH increased during the first 14 d of photostimulation to a significantly higher concentration, compared with constant 8 h controls, when the photoperiod was increased to 13 or 16 h at 9, 12 or 15 weeks; but for the increase from 8 h to 10 h photoperiods FSH was only significantly higher than controls when the change was made at 12 weeks. 3. The change in plasma FSH concentration 14 d after photostimulation was significantly correlated with mean AFE (reported in Lewis et al., 1997) and appears to be a better predictor of gonadal development than concurrent changes in plasma LH concentration previously reported (Lewis et al., 1994).

1. ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8 to 14 h or from 14 to 8 h photoperiods at 35 or 56 d of age. Controls were maintained on constant 8 or 14 h photoperiods from day 1. 2. Blood samples were obtained immediately before each daylength change and subsequently at 7 d intervals until 1st egg in the treated groups and at 70 d of age and then at 14 d intervals until 1st egg in the constant photoperiod controls. Plasma luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations were determined using homologous radioimmunoassays. 3. Prior to 16 weeks, LH was consistently higher in birds on constant 14 h photoperiods than in those on constant 8 h, but was down-regulated as birds approached maturity so that LH concentrations in the 2 groups were similar during the final 10 d before the first egg was laid. FISH concentrations rose steadily with age but with a tendency for concentrations to be higher in the 8 h than in the 14 h treatment. Birds on constant 8 h daylengths matured 18.3 d later than those on constant 14 h photoperiods. 4. A 6 h increment in photoperiod given at 35 d or 56 d, resulted in an increase in LH within 7 d in both cases. FSH concentration did not respond to an increase in photoperiod at 35 d but rose following the same increase at 56 d. This was associated with a 3-week advance in sexual maturity, whilst age at 1st egg in birds photostimulated at 35 d was similar to the age with a constant 14 h photoperiod. 5. LH concentration fell when photoperiod was reduced from 14 to 8 h at either 35 or 56 d and remained below the constant 8 h controls for many weeks before rising to a concentration not significantly different from other groups in the final 10 d before 1st egg. FSH concentrations in birds exposed to a decreased daylength at 35 d, although more oscillatory, were similar to the constant 8 h photoperiod controls. In birds exposed to the same decrease at 56 d, FSH concentration initially tumbled but was similar in the 2 groups during the latter stages of rearing; neither differed significantly from the constant daylength controls during the 60 d before 1st egg. Sexual maturity in both groups given a reduction in photoperiod was delayed by about 2 weeks compared with constant 8 h controls. 6. Change in FSH concentration following an increase in daylength was a better predictor of age at 1st egg than change in LH. However, FSH concentrations after 14 weeks of age were rather similar in short day and long day controls and in the 2 groups given reductions in photoperiod at 35 d and 56 d, despite differences of nearly 5 weeks in mean age at 1st egg amongst these 4 treatments.

1. ISA Brown and Shaver 288 pullets were changed from 8 h to 8, 10, 13 or 16 h photoperiods at 42, 63, 84, 105, 126 or 142 d of age. 2. Age at first egg (AFE) was curvilinearly affected by the size and timing of the change in photoperiod. AFE was advanced most by a photoperiod change from 8 to 13 h made at 63 or 84 d. ISA birds were generally more responsive than Shaver to the photoperiod changes. 3. Longer photoperiods significantly increased survivors' egg production, but decreased liveability to 504 d. so that eggs per hen housed were unaffected. Retarding AFE by 10 d reduced survivors' egg numbers by 7.0, but increased mean egg weight by 1.26 g. Egg output by Shaver birds was unaffected by AFE, but that of ISA was curvilinearly affected, with an apogee at an AFE of 135 d. In both breeds, egg weight and egg output were greater following an early or late, rather than a mid-term photostimulation. 4. Photoperiod significantly increased mean daily food intake during lay by 1.26 g/h. A 10 d retardation in AFE resulted in a reduction in food intake of 1 g/d. Efficiency of food conversion deteriorated according to the square of the photoperiod, and changed curvilinearly according to age at photostimulation. Food conversion efficiency improved by 0.05 g/g for each 10 d delay in AFE. 5. Shell quality was unaffected by AFE, but deteriorated with increasing photoperiod and was curvilinearly affected by age at photostimulation with the smallest shell weights associated with photostimulation at 63 d. The incidence of double-yolked (DY) egg production increased with photoperiod and decreased with delayed photostimulation. There was an exponential regression of DY eggs on AFE. 6. Body weight at first egg increased by 75 g/d delay in AFE, but body weight at 504 d of age was unaffected by AFE, photoperiod or age at photostimulation. Body weight gain during lay increased by 15 g/h increase in photoperiod, decreased by 6 g per 10 d delay in photostimulation and by 40 g per 10 d delay in AFE. Fat content at 504 d increased by about 10 g/kg and by 23 g/bird for each 10 d delay in AFE. 7. Mortality in lay increased by 0.8%/h increase in photoperiod, but was unaffected by either age at photostimulation or AFE.

1. Data for modern egg-type hybrids reared on constant daylengths show that, as expected, they mature more quickly than earlier genotypes. However, the constant photoperiod which gives earliest sexual maturity has not changed as a result of selection and is 10 h for both early and modern genotypes. 2. Further analysis showed that the rate of delay in sexual maturity for constant photoperiods above 10 h is similar for modern and for early hybrids (+0.29 d for each incremental one hour of photoperiod), the response of modern hybrids below 10 h (+4.22 d for each one-hour reduction in photoperiod) is more than double that of early hybrids (+1.71 d/h).

1. The effects of constant photoperiods and of single (5 h) changes in photoperiod applied at 12 or 17 weeks of age upon age at first egg (AFE) were studied using ISA Brown and Shaver 288 pullets. 2. Birds reared from 2 d of age until after maturity on constant 10 h photoperiods matured 8 d earlier than birds reared on constant 8 h and 5 d earlier than the average for 13 or 18 h photoperiods. 3. A single increment in photoperiod from 8 to 13 h advanced AFE by 23 d (compared to 8 h constant day controls) when applied at 84 d, but by only 6 d when given at 119 d. An increase in photoperiod from 13 to 18 h advanced AFE by only 4 d, averaged across breeds and age at increase. A reduction in photoperiod from 13 to 8 h delayed AFE by 22 d when given at 84 d and by 16 d at 119 d. A similar 5 h reduction in photoperiod, but from 18 to 13 h, retarded maturity by 11 d in ISA Brown pullets, but only when given at 84 d, and delayed AFE in Shaver 288 by 12 d, but only when given at 119 d. This interaction may be partly explained by the different physiological stages reached by the two breeds when the photoperiod was changed. 4. Under constant daylengths cumulative food intake before first egg was positively correlated with photoperiod, but the early AFE for birds on 10 h photoperiods resulted in this group having the lowest cumulative food intake to first egg. 5. A 5 h increase in photoperiod at 84 d significantly reduced the food consumed to first egg, but had no effect when given at 119 d. A 5 h decrease in photoperiod generally increased the food consumed to first egg, but the effect was only significant when the daylength was reduced from 13 to 8 h at 119 d. Food intake to first egg in birds subjected to a change in photoperiod was highly correlated with AFE. 6. The data confirm that sexual development in growing pullets responds more to changes in photoperiod than to the absolute daylength, that changes made at different daylengths are not equivalent and that sensitivity changes with age.

1. Data from intermittent and conventional lighting trials were analysed to investigate the effect of daily illumination upon mortality during the laying period and in 49‐d‐old broilers. 2. Iiveability in laying hens was improved by the use of intermittent lighting: the degree of improvement was proportional to the reduction in daily illumination achieved by the intermittent programme. 3. The reduction in mortality with intermittent lighting in laying hens was not the result of intermittent lighting per se. Intermittent regimens which did not reduce daily illumination did not reduce mortality. 4. Mortality in both conventionally‐lit laying hens and 49‐d old‐broiler chickens increased with photoperiod.

1. ISA Brown pullets were given an 8-h photoperiod and fed ad libitum to 63 d of age. At 63 d the photoperiod was either kept at 8 h or increased to 13 h, and the photostimulated birds were subjected to 1 of 3 feeding systems: ad libitum, 8 h daily access to food or a daily individual allocation of food equal to that given to the 8 h control group. 2. Mean age at first egg (AFE) of the groups given the photoperiod increase was on average 33 d earlier than that of the 8 h controls. Within the photostimulated groups, limiting daily feeding opportunity to 8 h delayed maturity by 4 d compared with ad libitum feeding. The mean AFE of the birds which were given allocated quantities of food was intermediate and not significantly different from either of the other groups. 3. Light was the principal factor which determined AFE, but moderate food restriction had a small modifying influence, consistent with earlier evidence. 4. The 3 groups given a 5-h increase in photoperiod consumed similar quantities of food to first egg, which was laid around 15 weeks of age. The 8 h control group ate a similar amount of food to this age, but needed more than 40% extra food to reach their first egg at 20 weeks.

1. Two trials were conducted, using 288 brown-egg hybrid pullets in each, to determine the effect on age at first egg (AFE) of exposure to one or two 'long days' during the rearing period. In the first trial, birds were given a single 'long day' of 10, 12 or 14 h at 75, 89 or 103 d of age, with controls maintained on 8-h photoperiods. All treatment groups were transferred to cages at 110 d, and half the birds from each treatment combination given a 6-h increment in photoperiod at 116 d, with the remainder held on 8-h photoperiods. In the other trial, birds were given one or two long days of 14 or 16 h at 96, 107, 117 or 128 d of age; controls were again held on 8-h photoperiods. All groups were moved to cages at 130 d but maintained on 8-h photoperiods. 2. AFE was not significantly affected by one or two pre-pubertal long days, irrespective of when the long day was given or its length. AFE was advanced by 2 to 3 weeks following a transfer from 8 to 14 h at 116 d, independently of whether or not the birds had received a previous long day exposure. 3. It appears that a full-fed egg-type hybrid requires more than two cycles of long days to initiate rapid gonadal development, and that exposure to a single long day during the rearing period will have minimal effect on the timing of sexual maturation and no influence on the response to a subsequent permanent transfer to long days.

1. Broiler breeder males were reared on 8-h photoperiods, transferred to 12 h at 20 weeks, and either maintained on 12 h or further transferred to 14, 16, 18, 20 or 22 h at 40 weeks to determine whether reproductive status and the timing of the onset of adult photorefractoriness is influenced by photoperiod during the breeding cycle. 2. No photoperiodic effect was observed on sperm concentration although the combination of large variation within a treatment and the lack of a semen sample from some males at each collection may have masked small differences and indicates that perhaps fertility in individual males fluctuates naturally during the breeding season. 3. The rate of comb growth to, and testicular weights at, 60 weeks were not significantly different between treatments. 4. Plasma testosterone concentration at 60 weeks of age declined linearly with photoperiod between 12 and 22 h, suggesting that in the birds exposed to the more stimulatory photoperiods after 40 weeks, hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal activity shut down earlier. 5. An increase in photoperiod at 40 weeks of age appears to advance the onset of photorefractoriness in male broiler breeders, evident from the decline in testosterone concentration with increasing photoperiod; it is however insufficient to affect sperm concentration or comb area.

1. Individually-caged Ross 308 broiler breeders were transferred temporarily at 147 d from 8 to 14-h photoperiods and back to 8 h at 5-d intervals from 5 to 25 d and at 32 d. Control birds were maintained on 8 h or transferred permanently to 14 h. 2. Five long days had minimal effect on age at first egg, between 10 and 25 long days progressively accelerated sexual development, and maximum advance was achieved by 32 long days. However, a model involving the ogive of a normal distribution with a mean of 14 long days and an SD of 5.3 indicated that 28 long days would be sufficient to maximise sexual development. 3. The similarity of this model for broiler breeders with one previously produced for egg-type pullets suggested a common physiological mechanism for photosexual responses to two opposing changes in photoperiod.

1. Egg production records of 31 455 individually caged hens, 27 to 34 weeks of age and of 4 genotypes, were examined. 2. Sixty‐nine non‐layers were identified in the 30 to 40 week age group, and examined post mortem; an incidence of 2.1 per 1000. 3. Some of the 69 individuals had more than one abnormality. Forty‐two percent were internal layers, 34% had some form of neoplasia, 24% had an abnormal or diseased oviduct, 18% were sex reversals, 16% had a diseased ovary, 8% were of poor condition and considered culls, and 7% were in good condition, but with small, immature ovaries. 4. Of 54 birds not in lay at 27 weeks, 43 (80%) had come into lay by 34 weeks of age. 5. Genotype influenced the incidence of neoplasia and, in turn, the number of non‐layers.

Ross 308 broiler breeder females, maintained in litter-floor pens, were reared from 2 d of age on 8-h photoperiods and transferred abruptly to an 11-, 12-, 13-, or 14-h photoperiod at 20 wk of age and at a mean BW of 2.09 kg. Four qualitative dietary treatments were superimposed upon each photoperiodic treatment, but, in the absence of any significant interactions of photoperiod with diet, only photoperiodic means are reported. Age at 50% egg production (ASM) was progressively advanced as photoperiod increased from 11 to 13 h but was similar for 13-h and 14-h birds. Egg production was significantly related to ASM, with peak egg numbers being stimulated by a transfer to 13-h photoperiods. Rate of lay after 48 wk of age declined more rapidly in the 14-h birds than in any of the other groups, suggestive of an earlier onset of adult photorefractoriness. More eggs were laid outside the nest box and more cracked and dirty eggs were produced by birds on 11- and 12-h photoperiods than on 13- or 14-h photoperiods. Mean egg weight was positively correlated with ASM but negatively related to photoperiod; the number of eggs thought to be double-yolked was not significantly affected by photoperiod. Total egg mass output was not significantly affected by photoperiod. Birds exposed to 11-h and 12-h photoperiods were heavier at 60 wk than birds transferred to 13- or 14-h photoperiods. These findings show that a transfer from 8 to 13 h at 20 wk optimizes egg-laying performance in broiler breeder females, especially when they are kept beyond 60 wk of age.

1. Poultry are naturally long-sighted when they hatch, becoming emmetropic by 6 weeks of age. However, Cobb and Ross broilers exposed toor=12-h photoperiods rapidly learn to eat in the dark, a behaviour which could adversely affect the establishment of emmetropia. And so, in the current study, eyes were enucleated, post mortem, at 40 and 54 d from broilers given various photoperiods between 2 and 24 h, and eye weight determined to indirectly assess the extent to which photoperiod might affect ocular development. 2. In both genotypes, there was an inverse linear relationship between absolute eye weight and photoperiod up to 21 h, but continuously illuminated birds consistently had heavier eyes. When expressed relative to body weight, eye weight foror=21-h birds was inversely related to the logarithm of photoperiod. 3. The slope of the regression of relative eye weight onor=21-h photoperiod log values was significantly less at 54 d than at 40 d in both genotypes, but constantly illuminated birds continued to have above average eye weights. 4. Cobb birds invariably had heavier eyes than Ross, both in absolute and relative (to body weight) terms. 5. The results support previous work suggesting that there is a minimum period of daily darkness required to maintain chicken eye growth within the normal range and show that very short photoperiods, as well as ultra-long photoperiods and continuous illumination, adversely affect ocular development, with potential welfare implications.

Chemical analyses of 519 poultry carcasses, ranging from 475 to 3,679 g in weight, were statistically analyzed to ascertain whether fat contents could be estimated from DM data. The data included analyses of males and females, whole birds and eviscerated carcasses, sexually mature and immature birds, and young and old birds kept under various management systems and subjected to widely differing nutritional treatments. Regression slopes of the 15 sets of analyses were not significantly different from each other, this permitted a common regression to be fitted to all data. A high coefficient of determination (R2 = .953) indicated that the regression equation ŷ = −30.79 +1.22 x, where ŷ = fat content and x = DM, could be satisfactorily used to estimate fat content from DM data.

1. Broiler breeders were reared at an initial illuminance of 13, 21 or 44 lux and transferred at 20 weeks and a mean body weight of 2.06 kg to floor pens at 25, 55 or 71 lux, or to individual cages at various intensities between 3 and 138 lux. 2. Rate of sexual maturation was not significantly affected by the light intensity experienced during the rearing period, but was progressively accelerated by the provision of a brighter illuminance after 20 weeks, up to a ceiling of about 14 lux. There was no interaction between the pre- and post-20-week illuminance. 3. Cumulative egg numbers to 39 weeks were unaffected by illuminance in the rearing period, positively correlated with illuminance post 20 weeks up to an asymptote at about 8 lux, and highly correlated with age at sexual maturity. Peak rate of lay was both delayed and depressed at 3 lux. 4. It is concluded that the minimum light intensity required at bird-head height to achieve satisfactory photostimulation and an optimal peak rate of lay in broiler breeders is 10 lux, but that a higher illuminance would be prudent for broiler breeders kept in floor pen facilities to maximise nest-box usage.

1. The performance of brown egg laying hens was compared under conventional and asymmetrical interrupted-lighting conditions. 2. Egg numbers and mean weight were similar under the two conditions, provided the apparent day perceived by the hen was the same under both lighting treatments. 3. Daily food intakes of intermittently-illuminated hens were not significantly lower than those of conventionally-lit birds. However, the reductions were of the magnitude reported in the literature and observed under commercial conditions. 4. Shell quality was unaffected by interrupted lighting in the period up to 60 weeks of age in two of the 4 genotypes studied. All breeds had lower shell weights under interrupted lighting in the last three months of lay. 5. Intermittently-lit hens had lower body weights, which approached significance, and significantly less carcase fat. There were no differences in ash, protein (N x 6.25) or water contents of the carcases, or in fat content at a given body weight. 6. There were no significant differences in the production responses of the 4-brown-egg hybrids to interrupted lighting. 7. Diets with differing concentrations of energy and protein were included in both trials, but there was no evidence of interaction between these nutritional treatments and the lighting treatments.

1. There were no significant differences in the mean time of oviposition, distribution of ovipositions over the 24 h or proportion of eggs laid in the modal 8 h when conventionally-lit hens were compared with hens which received interrupted lighting with the same apparent daylength. 2. Intermittently-lit hens performed 25% less feeding activity than conventionally-lit hens, but without a significant reduction in mean food intake. There were genetic differences in response of feeding rate to interrupted lighting. 3. Intermittently-illuminated hens consumed about 20% of their food during the scotoperiods which interrupted the apparent day of a 1.5L:0.5D:10(0.5L:0.5D):4L:8D regimen, although there was significant genetic variation from 10 to 22%. None of the genotypes ate during the 8-h night. 4. Across 4 genotypes neither crop weight nor rate of crop emptying was affected by the lighting treatments, although a heavier mean crop weight under interrupted lighting approached significance in one breed (P less than 0.10). 5. Interrupted lighting did not cause any ocular disorders.

The objective of this work was to define precisely the response curve for photoinduced luteinizing hormone (LH) release in feed-restricted meat-type (broiler) breeder females and to compare it with the photoperiodic response curve for advance in age at first egg (AFE). Birds with a mean body weight of 2.0 kg at 20 weeks of age were transferred from an 8 to a 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12, 12.5, 13, 14 or 18-h photoperiod; change in plasma LH was measured 4 d after photostimulation and subsequent individual AFE recorded. The first significant increase in LH secretion was seen in birds transferred to an 11.5-h photoperiod, but no further significant increases in LH were observed in birds transferred to longer photoperiods. A photoperiodic response curve based on a meta-analysis of changes in photoinduced LH secretion observed in this study and data from an earlier experiment using dwarf broiler breeders indicated a critical daylength of about 9.5 h and a saturation daylength of approximately 13 h. Similarly, the first significant advance in AFE occurred in birds transferred to an 11-h photoperiod, but with no further significant increases seen in birds transferred to photoperiods >11 h. A response curve for photoinduced advances in AFE was produced by meta-analysis using data from the present study and from an earlier investigation involving fewer, more widely spaced photoperiods. It is concluded, in female broiler breeders, that the photoperiodic response curves for photoinduced LH release and AFE are similar, with the point at which the responses begin to rise steeply (classical critical daylength) occurring at 9.5 h and the asymptote (classical saturation daylength) at 13 h. Functionally, however, the minimum photoperiod to achieve a significant change in either LH secretion or advance in AFE is between 11 and 11.5 h.

1. In two trials, broiler breeders were grown to a mean body weight of 2.0 to 2.2 kg at 20 weeks on 8L:16D and transferred to 16L:8D at various ages between 69 and 175 d of age at mean body weights varying between 1.0 and 2.7 kg. Other groups were grown to have a mean 20-week body weight 0.87, 1.15, 1.25 or 1.37 of the normal birds and photostimulated simultaneously with the normal weight birds. Controls were held on 8L:16D in each weight group. In a third trial, broiler breeders were transferred from 8L:16D to 16L:8D at 45 (ad libitum fed), 75 or 90 d (mild feed control), when the mean body weight of each group had reached 2.1 kg. Controls weighing 2.0 kg at 20 weeks were held on 8L:16D or 16L:8D. 2. In trial 1, photostimulating normal weight birds at 69, 76, 83 or 97 d delayed maturity and widened the spread of individual maturities, whilst transferring to 16L:8D at 111 or 125 d advanced maturity. Increasing the mean 20-week body weight to 2.8 kg advanced maturity in birds transferred to 16L:8D at 97, 111 or 125 d. Birds photostimulated at 69, 76 and 83 d matured at a similar age to controls held on 8L:16D. 3. In trial 2, transferring normal weight birds to 16L:8D at 91, 112, 133, 147, 161 or 175 d advanced maturity. Reducing the 20-week mean body weight to 1.91 kg delayed maturity in birds photostimulated at 91 or 112 d, but advanced it in birds photostimulated at 112, 133, 147, 161 or 175 d. Sexual maturity was similar for birds with a 20-week mean body weight of 2.54 or 2.74 kg, with advances for all groups photostimulated between 91 and 175 d. 4. In trial 3, birds maintained on 16L:8D matured later than birds held on 8L:16D, but maturity was advanced when birds were transferred to 16L:8D at 45, 75 or 90 d at a common body weight of 2.1 kg.

1. Lohmann White and Lohmann Brown egg-type hybrids were reared on 6-, 8-, 10- or 12-h photoperiods, transferred to 12.5 h at 18 weeks and then given weekly increments to reach 14 h at 21 weeks. In a second experiment, Lohmann White pullets from the same rearing facility were transferred abruptly to 14 h at 18 weeks. 2. Body weight gain and feed intake to 6 and 18 weeks were positively correlated with rearing photoperiod in both breeds. Mortality to 18 weeks was unaffected. 3. Whether the photoperiod was increased abruptly or in a series of increments, Lohmann White pullets reared on 6 or 8 h matured 4 to 6 d later than pullets reared on 10 or 12 h. Rearing day-length had little effect on sexual maturity in Lohmann Brown pullets. 4. In both genotypes and each experiment, egg numbers, egg weight and shell strength increased with rearing photoperiod. Feed intake in the laying period was not significantly affected by rearing day-length, but a meta-analysis of all data showed a significant, though small, increase in adult feed intake with rearing photoperiod. Despite Lohmann White birds reared on 6 and 8 h having lower body weights throughout the laying period, they had larger body weight gains between 18 and 70 weeks than those reared on 10 or 12 h. There were no clear effects of rearing photoperiod on albumen height or mortality. 5. The heavier eggs and stronger shells of the birds reared on the longer day-lengths were correlated with heavier body weights at 18 weeks, and the superior egg numbers and higher feed intake were associated with age at sexual maturity.

1. Broiler breeders were given a 3-h increase in photoperiod to 11 h at 20 week and then a series of increases to reach 16 or 17 h either immediately after the initial increment or in 30-min, 1- or 2-h increments starting at various ages after peak rate of lay. Controls were maintained on 11 h from 20 weeks. Changes in plasma LH concentration (after 7 d) were measured in birds that had been transferred to 11 or 16 h at 20 weeks and given further increases in photoperiod at 41 or 61 weeks of age. 2. Birds that were transferred to 16- or 17-h photoperiods, irrespective of when and how the maximum photoperiod was reached, had inferior rates of lay between 52 and 60 weeks of age to birds maintained on 11 h from 20 weeks. However, the 11-h birds laid more eggs on the floor and produced a larger number of cracked and dirty eggs, resulting in similar numbers of settable eggs. 3. Although transferring birds from 11- to 16-h photoperiods at 41 weeks of age significantly increased plasma LH concentration, there was no effect on egg production during the ensuing 12 d. None of the other increases in photoperiod significantly increased plasma LH, whether given at 41 or 61 weeks. 4. It is concluded in broiler breeders, that increases in photoperiod applied during the laying period, from 11 or 16 h, have little or no effect on LH secretion, do not compensate for age-related declines in egg production, and adversely affect rate of lay.

1. Lohmann Brown pullets were reared on 8-h photoperiods and transferred to 12 h at 15 weeks by either advancing dawn or delaying dusk by 4 h. At 25 weeks, half of each group was transferred to 16 h by advancing dawn or delaying dusk and, 10 d later, each photoperiod-group was advanced or delayed 4 h by moving both dawn and dusk. Individual oviposition times were recorded over 48 h at 25 weeks and 8-10 d after each lighting change. 2. At 25 weeks, there were no differences in mean time of oviposition, eggs laid in the modal 8 h, or in the proportion of eggs laid before dawn between pullets that had been given a 4-h increase in daylength at 15 weeks by advancing dawn and those photostimulated by delaying dusk. 3. Extensions of the daylength from 12 to 16 h at 25 weeks, whether by advancing dawn or by delaying dusk, delayed mean oviposition time by 2 h and virtually eliminated egg-laying before dawn. All groups laid > or = 94% of eggs in the modal 8 h. 4. Moving the complete 12- or 16-h photoperiod forwards by 4 h delayed egg-laying by 0.5 h (relative to dawn), whilst moving them backwards advanced it by 0.7 h. Pullets given 16 h of light laid very few eggs before lights-on, but the divergent movements in oviposition time, relative to dawn, resulted in more eggs being laid before lights-on when the 12-h photoperiod was moved backwards and fewer eggs when it was moved forwards. However, a slower adjustment to the new times of dawn and dusk by the pullets whose day had been moved forward, as indicated by fewer eggs being laid in the modal 8 h and poorer rates of lay compared with pullets that had their photoperiod moved backwards, may explain these differences. It is doubtful that the differences would have persisted after all birds had adjusted their ovulatory cycle, and so any reduction in pre-dawn egg-laying is likely to have been transitory. 5. The only permanent way to minimise pre-dawn egg-laying in brown-egg hybrids is to provide a photoperiod of at least 16 h, though 14-15 h may be long enough for white-egg hybrids and 12-13 h sufficient for broiler breeders.

Cobb broiler breeder pullets, grown to achieve 2.19 kg (normal growth) or 2.41 kg (faster growth) BW at 20 wk, were given continuous light during the first 2 d posthatch, were reared on 8-h photoperiods between 2 d and 20 wk of age, and were then transferred abruptly to 10-, 11-, 12-, 14-, 16-, or 18-h photoperiods at 20 wk. Controls remained on 8 h at 20 wk. The birds were reared on a litter-floor from 1 d and transferred at 15 wk to individual cages. Mean age at first egg (AFE) was advanced by 12 d, compared with controls, for the transfer to 10 h, and progressively earlier for longer photoperiods until a 25-d advance for 14 h; AFE was similar for pullets transferred to 14, 16, and 18 h. A quadratic regression indicated that a transfer to 15 h would induce the earliest maturity. On average, accelerating growth by about 10 d advanced AFE by 4 d, but the difference was larger for transfers to a more stimulatory photoperiod. Body weight at first egg increased by about 20 g for each 1-d delay in first egg and was 110 g heavier for the faster growth pullets than for controls. Egg numbers to 39 wk increased by 0.75 for each 1-d earlier AFE. Mean egg weight was negatively related to photoperiod, decreasing by 0.3 g per 1-h, but positively linked to AFE, increasing by 0.1 g for each 1-d delay in AFE. Faster growth did not significantly increase egg numbers or mean egg weight, but it did increase egg output to 39 wk by 150 g. The data suggest that broiler breeders reared on 8-h daylengths do not need more than a 14-h photoperiod in the laying period to optimize sexual development or egg production. Typically recommended BW targets for broiler breeders (2.1 to 2.2 kg) appear to be optimal for egg production. Responses to the lighting treatments were independent of those to 20-wk BW.

Broiler breeder pullets were grown on 8-h photoperiods to 2.23 or 2.42 kg of BW at 20 wk, and then transferred abruptly to 11- or 16-h photoperiods. Subsequently, some of the 11-h photoperiod birds were given 15-min increases in day length weekly or a 1-h increase every 4 wk to reach 16 h of light at 54 wk. The birds transferred abruptly to a 16-h photoperiod at 20 wk matured 4 d earlier than 11-h photoperiod birds, required 500 g less feed to reach 50% lay, but, because of a 3% lower rate of lay after peak, produced 5 fewer eggs to 60 wk. However, the number of settable eggs was similar for the 2 groups because the 11-h photoperiod birds laid more eggs on the floor, resulting in more cracked and dirty eggs. The 11-h photoperiod birds converted feed into egg more efficiently, and were 100 g heavier at end of lay. Increasing the photoperiod in 15-min or 1-h increments from 11 to 16 h during the laying cycle depressed egg production. Mean egg weight and mortality were similar for all lighting groups. The heavier BW birds at 20 wk reached maturity 1 d earlier, but used 1 kg more feed to reach maturity, laid 5 fewer total eggs (because of a 3% lower rate of lay after peak), produced 7 more unsettable eggs (because more eggs were laid on the floor), and converted feed into egg less efficiently than did the lighter BW birds. Mean egg weight, BW at 57 wk, and mortality were similar for both groups. There was no significant light x growth interaction for any performance parameter. It is concluded that there is no benefit to egg production from extending the photoperiod to 16 h when broiler breeders are kept in light-proofed housing, especially if they have access to illuminated nest boxes.

Egg production by meat-type fowl is markedly inferior to that from commercial laying hens, and so, to assess the degree to which photorefractoriness might be a contributing factor, male- and female-line broiler breeders were maintained on 8-, 11- or 16-h photoperiods. In addition, to determine the age-related rate of change in response to an increment in photoperiod, other birds were transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 67 or 124 d. Blood samples were taken from all groups, except those on constant 11-h photoperiods, in both genotypes at 67, 69, 124 and 126 d, and from all lighting groups in the female line at 58 weeks (end of trial), and the plasma was assayed for plasma luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration to investigate possible correlations with rate of sexual maturity, total egg numbers and terminal rates of lay. Prepubertal LH was consistently higher for the female line than for the male line, and higher for 16-h birds than for 8-h birds. At 69 and 126 d, LH values were not significantly different from those 2 d earlier for 8-h birds, but significantly reduced for 16-h birds. There was an increase in LH following photostimulation at 67 d, but no significant change after the 124-d light increase. There were no significant differences in FSH between the two genetic lines, nor any effect of photostimulation at 67 or 124 d. There was a tendency for FSH in 8-h birds to be higher than for 16-h birds, and this difference became significant for male-line birds at 67 d. At 58 weeks, LH was higher for constant 11- and 16-h birds and for birds photostimulated at 67 d than for constant 8-h controls or birds transferred from 8 to 16h at 124 d. Neither baseline nor photoinduced prepubertal changes in plasma LH nor FSH were found to be of value for predicting age at sexual maturity or subsequent rates of egg production. At 58 weeks, LH was not generally correlated with sexual maturity, total eggs or terminal rates of lay, however, there was a negative correlation with age at first egg in birds photostimulated at 124 d. It must be concluded that plasma LH and FSH concentrations are of minimal value to the broiler breeder industry for predicting the degree of photorefractoriness, the age at sexual maturity, or subsequent egg production.

1. Broiler breeder pullets were exposed to constant 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- or 16-h photoperiods from 3 d of age. Egg weight, eggshell weight and shell thickness index were determined at 52 weeks of age. 2. Egg weight increased by 0·31 g, shell weight decreased by 30 mg and shell thickness index decreased by 0·57 mg/cm2 for each one-hour increase in photoperiod. 3. Whilst the changes in egg weight and eggshell thickness index might be overstated because eggs were collected at the same chronological time, the effect of time of egg-laying within the day was minimal in comparison, and did not negate the conclusion that egg weight increases, and shell weight and thickness index decrease with lengthening photoperiods. 4. The effect of photoperiod on eggshell quality was not due to differences in the rate of lay between treatments. Shell weight was unaffected by time of lay.

1. Oviposition times were recorded for broiler breeder hens under 8-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- and 16-h photoperiods. 2. Mean oviposition time (MOT) was delayed relative to dawn by approximately 0.5 h for each 1-h increase in photoperiod up to 14 h, but was similar for 14- and 16-h photoperiods. However, the 0.5 h/h regression for the time when half the eggs were laid continued through to 16 h. 3. The rate of change in MOT for each 1-h increase inor = 14-h photoperiod was similar to that reported for early and modern egg-type hybrids, but, compared with modern genotypes, time of lay itself was 1 h later than white-egg and 2.5 h later than brown-egg hybrids. 4. At photoperiodsor = 12.25 h, the number of eggs laid before dawn increased by 4-5% for each 1-h reduction in daylength.

1. Broiler breeder pullets were maintained on 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- or 16-h photoperiods to determine the effect of constant photoperiods on sexual development in broiler breeders. The birds were fed to achieve a 2100 g body weight at approximately 17 or 20 weeks to see if the photosexual response was modified by rate of growth. 2. In both body weight groups, pullets maintained on 10h were the first to reach sexual maturity (50 eggs/100 bird-d), and these and the 11-h pullets matured significantly earlier than any of the other photoperiod groups. Pullets maintained on 13 or 14 h matured latest, at about 3 weeks after the 10-h pullets, though both were only marginally later than the 12- or 16-h birds. These differences in maturation probably reflect the different rates at which photorefractoriness is dissipated in broiler breeders reared on photoperiods that vary in their degree of stimulatory competence. 3. There were no significant interactions among the photoperiods and the ages at 2100 g; faster-growing birds consistently matured about 10 d earlier than conventionally grown pullets.

1. Photorefractoriness was assessed in two lines of broiler breeders. In one trial, male-line and female-line pullets were reared on the floor and transferred to individual cages at 15 weeks. Birds were either maintained on 8-, 11- or 16-h photoperiods or transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 67 or 124 d. In the second trial, female-line pullets were concurrently housed in the same rearing facilities as trial 1 and transferred to adult floor-pens at 12 weeks. These birds were either maintained on 11- or 16-h photoperiods or transferred from 8- to 11-h or from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 140 d. 2. In the cages, male-line and female-line birds responded similarly to the lighting treatments, but with the male-line maturing 1 to 2 weeks later than the female-line in each case. Birds on constant 11-h photoperiods matured 3 to 8 d earlier than constant 8-h birds, but 3 weeks earlier than constant 16-h birds. Birds photostimulated at 67 d matured at a similar time to constant 16-h birds, but almost 7 weeks later than those transferred from 8 to 16 h at 124 d. In the floor facilities, constant 11-h birds matured 3 weeks earlier than constant 16-h birds, but almost 2 weeks later than either of the photostimulated groups. Birds transferred from 8 to 16 h matured 4d earlier than those transferred from 8 to 11 h. 3. Caged birds maintained on 16 h or transferred from 8 to 16 h at 67 d laid at least 24 fewer eggs, and had more hens not laying at 58 weeks, than birds maintained on 11-h days or those transferred from 8 to 16 h at 124 d. In the floor-pens, constant 11-h and both photostimulated groups produced about 20 more eggs to 56 weeks of age than the constant 16-h controls. 4. Collectively, these findings indicate that conventionally managed broiler breeders exhibit photorefractoriness. Additionally, a combination of photorefractoriness and controlled feeding appears to prevent broiler breeders from being photoresponsive until at least 10 weeks of age, and to cause some individuals still to be photoperiodically non-responsive at 18 weeks.

The addition of two 3-h periods of very dim light, one before and one after a normal 8-h photoperiod, advances sexual maturity in pullets by about a week. This trial tested the hypothesis that dim light given before a short day of normal intensity is linked to form a more stimulatory day length and that dim light given after it is photosexually ignored. Pullets were reared from 2 d of age on 8-h photoperiods. From 10 wk, they were continued on 8-h photoperiods, transferred to 16 h, or given an 8-h period of dim light (0.09 lx) immediately before or after the main 8-h photoperiod. The bright/dim and dim/ bright groups matured at the same age, thus disproving the hypothesis tested. Both groups matured 1 wk earlier than the 8-h controls but 5 wk later than birds transferred to 16-h photoperiod. Oviposition time was similar for 8-h controls and bright/dim hens and delayed by 3 h for 16-h birds, but phase advanced by 2.4 h for dim/bright hens. Plasma melatonin rhythm was phase-advanced by about 5 h in the dim/bright hens and retarded by about 5 h in the bright/dim hens, suggesting a 13-h subjective day. However, these treatments were not regarded as fully stimulatory, as a transfer to a normal 13-h photoperiod at this age advances maturity by 5 to 6 wk. These findings show that the addition of a period of dim light to a normal nonstimulatory photoperiod differentially affects the clocks that control sexual maturation, plasma melatonin concentration, and oviposition time.

1. Under commercial and experimental conditions domestic turkeys often cause injuries to pen-mates by repeated pecking, sometimes fatally. Environmental enrichment or lighting manipulations might be used to mitigate such injurious pecking. 2. This study examined responses to 4 treatments (2 rooms/treatment) of 8 groups of 100, non-beak trimmed, non-desnooded, male domestic turkeys from 1 to 35 d of age. 3. Birds of 1 treatment were reared under conditions approximating to commercial rearing (12L:12D incandescent, Control) whereas the experimental treatments were 12L:12D incandescent plus supplemental ultraviolet radiation, straw supplementation of litter, pecking substrates and visual barriers (Enriched), 12L:12D fluorescent lighting (Fluorescent), and 2(2L:3D):2L:12D incandescent (Intermittent). 4. Compared to control birds, the incidence of injuries caused by wing or tail pecking were both lower in the Enriched but not significantly different in the Fluorescent or Intermittent. 5. Injuries caused by head pecking did not occur in the Enriched rooms but were observed in at least 1 of the rooms with Control, Fluorescent and Intermittent treatments. 6. Despite considerable environmental differences between treatments, there was remarkable consistency within each type of injurious pecking in age at which injuries were 1st recorded (wing pecking, 9.38+/-1.31 d; tail pecking, 20.43+/-2.42 d; head pecking, 27.8+/-2.13 d). The roles of feather emergence, hierarchy formation in wild turkey poults and appearance of feathers are discussed as possible explanations of these consistencies.

1. This paper reviews evidence from 15 experiments, reported over a span of 44 years, in which pullets were reared from hatching to sexual maturity on 2 or more constant photoperiods. 2. The evidence strongly indicates that earliest age at first egg (AFE) was observed when pullets were held on constant 10 h days (though earlier maturity is easily induced by increasing the photoperiod during rearing). The pair of equations which best describe the relationship between AFE (y, d) and photoperiod (x, h) are for xor = 10 h, y = 175.8-1.731x; for xor = 10 h, y = 155.5 + 0.301x. 3. This 2-straight-line model, hinged at 10 h, should be used in preference to curvilinear models published earlier, which wrongly predict that pullets reared on long days (14 h to 17 h) mature faster than birds reared on constant 10 h.

1. Growing pullets were reared on constant 8, 11 or 14 h photoperiods or given 12 daily increments of 30 min followed by an abrupt 6 h decrease in photoperiod in 14 d cycles from 2 d of age to sexual maturity. 2. Birds on the experimental lighting programme matured earlier than constant 8-h controls, later than 11-h controls but at the same age and body weight as constant 14-h controls. 3. Weight of the first egg was correlated with age at first egg. 4. It is assumed that potential advances in maturity for the experimental birds from the 30 min increments in photoperiod were cancelled by the retarding influences of 6 h decreases in photoperiod, resulting in their maturity being similar to that of birds reared on a constant daylength equal to the longest photoperiod reached during the cycle.
