We introduce the notion of Lyapunov exponents for random dynamical systems, conditioned to tra-jectories that stay within a bounded domain for asymptotically long times. This is motivated by thedesire to characterize local dynamical properties in the presence of unbounded noise (when almost alltrajectories are unbounded). We illustrate its use in the analysis of local bifurcations in this context.The theory of conditioned Lyapunov exponents of stochastic differential equations builds on thestochastic analysis of quasi-stationary distributions for killed processes and associated quasi-ergodic dis-tributions. We show that conditioned Lyapunov exponents describe the asymptotic stability behaviourof trajectories that remain within a bounded domain and – in particular – that negative conditionedLyapunov exponents imply local synchronisation. Furthermore, a conditioned dichotomy spectrum isintroduced and its main characteristics are established.

We study automorphism groups of sparse graphs from the viewpoint of topological dynamics and the Kechris, Pestov, Todor\v{c}evi\'c correspondence. We investigate amenable and extremely amenable subgroups of these groups using the space of orientations of the graph and results from structural Ramsey theory. Resolving one of the open questions in the area, we show that Hrushovski's example of an $\omega$-categorical sparse graph has no $\omega$-categorical expansion with extremely amenable automorphism group., Comment: 41 pages, 2 figures, minor revision

We establish the existence of chimera states, simultaneously supporting synchronous and asynchronous dynamics, in a network consisting of two symmetrically linked star subnetworks consisting of identical oscillators with shear and Kuramoto--Sakaguchi coupling. We show that the chimera states may be metastable or asymptotically stable. If the intra-star coupling strength is of order $\varepsilon$, the chimera states persist on time scales at least of order $1/\varepsilon$ in general, and on time-scales at least of order $1/\varepsilon^2$ if the intra-star coupling is of Kuramoto--Sakaguchi type. If the intra-star coupling configuration is sparse, the chimeras are asymptotically stable. The analysis relies on a combination of dimensional reduction using a M\"obius symmetry group and techniques from averaging theory and normal hyperbolicity., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

Funder: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), We show that for a generic conformal metric perturbation of a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold $\Sigma$ with Betti number $b_1$, the order of vanishing of the Ruelle zeta function at zero equals $4-b_1$, while in the hyperbolic case it is equal to $4-2b_1$. This is in contrast to the 2-dimensional case where the order of vanishing is a topological invariant. The proof uses the microlocal approach to dynamical zeta functions, giving a geometric description of generalized Pollicott-Ruelle resonant differential forms at 0 in the hyperbolic case and using first variation for the perturbation. To show that the first variation is generically nonzero we introduce a new identity relating pushforwards of products of resonant and coresonant 2-forms on the sphere bundle $S\Sigma$ with harmonic 1-forms on $\Sigma$.

This paper forms the first part of a series by the authors [GMV2,GMV3] concerning the structure theory of nilspaces of Antol\'in Camarena and Szegedy. A nilspace is a compact space $X$ together with closed collections of cubes $C^n(X)\subseteq X^{2^n}$, $n=1,2,\ldots$ satisfying some natural axioms. Antol\'in Camarena and Szegedy proved that from these axioms it follows that (certain) nilspaces are isomorphic (in a strong sense) to an inverse limit of nilmanifolds. The aim of our project is to provide a new self-contained treatment of this theory and give new applications to topological dynamics. This paper provides an introduction to the project from the point of view of applications to higher order Fourier analysis. We define and explain the basic definitions and constructions related to cubespaces and nilspaces and develop the weak structure theory, which is the first stage of the proof of the main structure theorem for nilspaces. Vaguely speaking, this asserts that a nilspace can be built as a finite tower of extensions where each of the successive fibers is a compact abelian group. We also make some modest innovations and extensions to this theory. In particular, we consider a class of maps that we term fibrations, which are essentially equivalent to what are termed fiber-surjective morphisms by Anatol\'in Camarena and Szegedy, and we formulate and prove a relative analogue of the weak structure theory alluded to above for these maps. The dynatomic modular curves parametrize polynomial maps together with a point of period $n$. It is known that the dynatomic curves $Y_1(n)$ are smooth and irreducible in characteristic 0 for families of polynomial maps of the form $f_c(z) = z^m +c$ where $m\geq 2$. In the present paper, we build on the work of Morton to partially characterize the primes $p$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of $Y_1(n)$ remains smooth and/or irreducible. As an application, we give new examples of good reduction of $Y_1(n)$ for several primes dividing the ramification discriminant when $n=7,8,11$. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in non-autonomous composition of perturbed hyperbolic systems: composing perturbations of a given hyperbolic map$F$results in statistical behaviour close to that of$F$. We show this fact in the case of piecewise regular expanding maps. In particular, we impose conditions on perturbations of this class of maps that include situations slightly more general than what has been considered so far, and prove that these are stochastically stable in the usual sense. We then prove that the evolution of a given distribution of mass under composition of time-dependent perturbations (arbitrarily—rather than randomly—chosen at each step) close to a given map$F$remains close to the invariant mass distribution of$F$. Moreover, for almost every point, Birkhoff averages along trajectories do not fluctuate wildly. This result complements recent results on memory loss for non-autonomous dynamical systems.

Let a and b be algebraic numbers such that exactly one of a and b is an algebraic integer, and let f_t(z):=z^2+t be a family of polynomials parametrized by t. We prove that the set of all algebraic numbers t for which there exist positive integers m and n such that f_t^m(a)=f_t^n(b) has bounded Weil height. This is a special case of a more general result supporting a new bounded height conjecture in dynamics. Our results fit into the general setting of the principle of unlikely intersections in arithmetic dynamics.

Let $X$ be a projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic $p \ge 0$. A surjective endomorphism $f$ of $X$ is $q$-polarized if $f^\ast H \sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein and normal. We show that the anti-canonical divisor $-K_X$ is numerically equivalent to an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisor, strengthening slightly the conclusion of Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre (Theorem C) and also covering singular varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is normal. We show that the Albanese morphism of $X$ is an algebraic fibre space and $f$ induces polarized endomorphisms on the Albanese and also the Picard variety of $X$, and $K_X$ being pseudo-effective and $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier means being a torsion $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor. Let $f^{Gal}:\overline{X}\to X$ be the Galois closure of $f$. We show that if $p>5$ and co-prime to $deg\, f^{Gal}$ then one can run the minimal model program (MMP) $f$-equivariantly, after replacing $f$ by a positive power, for a mildly singular threefold $X$ and reach a variety $Y$ with torsion canonical divisor (and also with $Y$ being a quasi-��tale quotient of an abelian variety when $\dim(Y)\le 2$). In his 1985 paper Sullivan sketched a proof of his structural stability theorem for differentiable group actions satisfying certain expansion-hyperbolicity axioms. In this paper we relax Sullivan's axioms and introduce a notion of "meandering hyperbolicity" for group actions on geodesic metric spaces. This generalization is substantial enough to encompass actions of certain non-hyperbolic groups, such as actions of "uniform lattices" in semisimple Lie groups on flag manifolds. At the same time, our notion is sufficiently robust and we prove that meandering-hyperbolic actions are still structurally stable. Given a family of polynomial-like maps of large topological degree, we relate the presence of Misiurewicz parameters to a growth condition for the volume of the iterates of the critical set. This generalizes to higher dimensions the well-known equivalence between stability and normality of the critical orbits in dimension one. We also introduce a notion of holomorphic motion of asymptotically all repelling cycles and prove its equivalence with other notions of stability. Our results allow us to generalize the theory of stability and bifurcation developed by Berteloot, Dupont and the author for the family of all endomorphisms of $$\mathbb P^k$$ of a given degree to any arbitrary family of endomorphisms of $$\mathbb P^k$$ or polynomial-like maps of large topological degree.

We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian derivative, the above semigroups exhibit, $C^r$-generically for any r, arbitrarily fast growth of the number of periodic points as a function of the period. We also show that a $C^r$-generic semigroup from the class under consideration supports an ultimately complicated behavior called universal dynamics., 36 pages, 1 figure

A new diffusion mechanism from the neighborhood of elliptic equilibria for Hamiltonian flows in three or more degrees of freedom is introduced. We thus obtain explicit real entire Hamiltonians on $\R^{2d}$, $d\geq 4$, that have a Lyapunov unstable elliptic equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen frequency vector whose coordinates are not all of the same sign. For non-resonant frequency vectors, our examples all have divergent Birkhoff normal form at the equilibrium. On $\R^4$, we give explicit examples of real entire Hamiltonians having an equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen non-resonant frequency vector and a divergent Birkhoff normal form., This new version revises and supersedes the original submissions. It shows that all the examples constructed have divergent Birkhoff normal form at the origin. We prove that the Shimizu–Morioka system has a Lorenz attractor for an open set of parameter values. For the proof we employ a criterion proposed by Shilnikov, which allows to conclude the existence of the attractor by examination of the behaviour of only one orbit. The needed properties of the orbit are established by using computer assisted numerics. Our result is also applied to the study of local bifurcations of triply degenerate periodic points of three-dimensional maps. It provides a formal proof of the birth of discrete Lorenz attractors at various global bifurcations.

We prove existence of flips, special termination, the base point free theorem and, in the case of log general type, the existence of minimal models for F-dlt foliated log pairs of co-rank one on a projective threefold. As applications, we show the existence of F-dlt modifications and F-terminalisations for foliated log pairs and we show that foliations with canonical or F-dlt singularities admit non-dicritical singularities. Finally, we show abundance in the case of numerically trivial foliated log pairs.

We describe the statistical properties of the dynamics of the quadratic polynomials P_a(z):=e^{2\pi a i} z+z^2 on the complex plane, with a of high return times. In particular, we show that these maps are uniquely ergodic on their measure theoretic attractors, and the unique invariant probability is a physical measure describing the statistical behavior of typical orbits in the Julia set. We derive some new conditions for integrability of dynamically defined C^1 invariant splittings in arbitrary dimension and co-dimension. In particular we prove that every 2-dimensional C^1 invariant decomposition on a 3-dimensional manifold satisfying a volume domination condition is uniquely integrable. In the special case of volume preserving diffeomorphisms we show that standard dynamical domination is already sufficient to guarantee unique integrability., Comment: 12 pages

For a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^1$ and a family $\{C_\lambda\}_{\lambda\in J}$ of dynamically defined Cantor sets sufficiently close to affine with $\text{dim}_H\, K+\text{dim}_H\, C_\lambda>1$ for all $\lambda\in J$, under natural technical conditions we prove that the sum $K+C_\lambda$ has positive Lebesgue measure for almost all values of the parameter $\lambda$. This paper is devoted to the study of a problem of Cassels in multiplicative Diophantine approximation which involves minimising values of a product of affine linear forms computed at integral points. It was previously known that values of this product become arbitrary close to zero, and we establish that, in fact, they approximate zero with an explicit rate. Our approach is based on investigating quantitative density of orbits of higher-rank abelian groups.

We present methods for bounding infinite-time averages in dynamical systems governed by nonlinear PDEs. The methods rely on auxiliary functionals, which are similar to Lyapunov functionals but satisfy different inequalities. The inequalities are enforced by requiring certain expressions to be sums of squares of polynomials, and the optimal choice of auxiliary functional is posed as a semidefinite program (SDP) that can be solved computationally. To formulate these SDPs we approximate the PDE by truncated systems of ODEs and proceed in one of two ways. The first approach is to compute bounds for the ODE systems, increasing the truncation order until bounds converge numerically. The second approach incorporates the ODE systems with analytical estimates on their deviation from the PDE, thereby using finite truncations to produce bounds for the full PDE. We apply both methods to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, where we compute upper bounds on the spatiotemporal average of energy by employing polynomial auxiliary functionals up to degree six. The first approach is used for most computations, but a subset of results are checked using the second approach, and the results agree to high precision. These bounds apply to all odd solutions of period $2\pi L$, where $L$ is varied. Sharp bounds are obtained for $L\le10$, and trends suggest that more expensive computations would yield sharp bounds at larger $L$ also. The bounds are known to be sharp (to within 0.1% numerical error) because they are saturated by the simplest nonzero steady states, which apparently have the largest mean energy among all odd solutions. Prior authors have conjectured that mean energy remains $O(1)$ for $L\gg1$ since no particular solutions with larger energy have been found. We study diffusion and mixing in different linear fluid dynamics models, mainly related to incompressible flows. In this setting, mixing is a purely advective effect which causes a transfer of energy to high frequencies. When diffusion is present, mixing enhances the dissipative forces. This phenomenon is referred to as enhanced dissipation, namely the identification of a time-scale faster than the purely diffusive one. We establish a precise connection between quantitative mixing rates in terms of decay of negative Sobolev norms and enhanced dissipation time-scales. The proofs are based on a contradiction argument that takes advantage of the cascading mechanism due to mixing, an estimate of the distance between the inviscid and viscous dynamics, and of an optimization step in the frequency cut-off. Thanks to the generality and robustness of our approach, we are able to apply our abstract results to a number of problems. For instance, we prove that contact Anosov flows obey logarithmically fast dissipation time-scales. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a flow that induces an enhanced dissipation time-scale faster than polynomial. We present a quantum ergodicity theorem for fixed spectral window and sequences of compact hyperbolic surfaces converging to the hyperbolic plane in the sense of Benjamini and Schramm. This addresses a question posed by Colin de Verdi\`{e}re. Our theorem is inspired by results for eigenfunctions on large regular graphs by Anantharaman and the first-named author. It applies in particular to eigenfunctions on compact arithmetic surfaces in the level aspect, which connects it to a question of Nelson on Maass forms. The proof is based on a wave propagation approach recently considered by Brooks, Lindenstrauss and the first-named author on discrete graphs. It does not use any microlocal analysis, making it quite different from the usual proof of quantum ergodicity in the large eigenvalue limit. Moreover, we replace the wave propagator with renormalised averaging operators over discs, which simplifies the analysis and allows us to make use of a general ergodic theorem of Nevo. The aim of this paper is to rigorously study the dynamics of Heterogeneously Coupled Maps (HCM). Such systems are determined by a network with heterogeneous degrees. Some nodes, called hubs, are very well connected while most nodes interact with few others. The local dynamics on each node is chaotic, coupled with other nodes according to the network structure. Such high-dimensional systems are hard to understand in full, nevertheless we are able to describe the system over exponentially large time scales. In particular, we show that the dynamics of hub nodes can be very well approximated by a low-dimensional system. This allows us to establish the emergence of macroscopic behaviour such as coherence of dynamics among hubs of the same connectivity layer (i.e. with the same number of connections), and chaotic behaviour of the poorly connected nodes. The HCM we study provide a paradigm to explain why and how the dynamics of the network can change across layers.

We show that any area-preserving $C^r$-diffeomorphism of a two-dimensional surface displaying an elliptic fixed point can be $C^r$-perturbed to one exhibiting a chaotic island whose metric entropy is positive, for every $1\le r\le \infty$. This proves a conjecture of Herman stating that the identity map of the disk can be $C^\infty$-perturbed to a conservative diffeomorphism with positive metric entropy. This implies also that the Chirikov standard map for large and small parameter values can be $C^\infty$-approximated by a conservative diffeomorphisms displaying a positive metric entropy (a weak version of Sinai's positive metric entropy conjecture). Finally, this sheds light onto a Herman's question on the density of $C^r$-conservative diffeomorphisms displaying a positive metric entropy: we show the existence of a dense set formed by conservative diffeomorphism which either are weakly stable (so, conjecturally, uniformly hyperbolic) or display a chaotic island of positive metric entropy., 50 p. 5 figures

We introduce a new family of thermostat flows on the unit tangent bundle of an oriented Riemannian $2$-manifold. Suitably reparametrised, these flows include the geodesic flow of metrics of negative Gauss curvature and the geodesic flow induced by the Hilbert metric on the quotient surface of divisible convex sets. We show that the family of flows can be parametrised in terms of certain weighted holomorphic differentials and investigate their properties. In particular, we prove that they admit a dominated splitting and we identify special cases in which the flows are Anosov. We consider the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, the central model in the study of electronic properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, and provide a detailed description of its spectrum and spectral characteristics (namely, the optimal H\"older exponent of the integrated density of states, the dimension of the density of states measure, the dimension of the spectrum, and the upper transport exponent) for all values of the coupling constant (in contrast to all previous quantitative results, which could be established only in the regime of small or large coupling). In particular, we show that the spectrum of this operator is a dynamically defined Cantor set and that the density of states measure is exact-dimensional; this implies that all standard fractal dimensions coincide in each case. We show that all the gaps of the spectrum allowed by the gap labeling theorem are open for all values of the coupling constant. Also, we establish strict inequalities between the four spectral characteristics in question, and provide the exact large coupling asymptotics of the dimension of the density of states measure (for the other three quantities, the large coupling asymptotics were known before). A crucial ingredient of the paper is the relation between spectral properties of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and dynamical properties of the Fibonacci trace map (such as dimensional characteristics of the non-wandering hyperbolic set and its measure of maximal entropy as well as other equilibrium measures, topological entropy, multipliers of periodic orbits). We establish exact identities relating the spectral and dynamical quantities, and show the connection between the spectral quantities and the thermodynamic pressure function., Comment: 47 pages
