Amide directed C–H borylation using ≥two equiv. of BBr3 forms borenium cations containing a R2N(R′)C[double bond]O→B(Ar)Br unit which has significant Lewis acidity at the carbonyl carbon. This enables reduction of the amide unit to an amine using hydrosilanes. This approach can be applied sequentially in a one-pot electrophilic borylation–reduction process, which for phenyl-acetylamides generates ortho borylated compounds that can be directly oxidised to the 2-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol. Other substrates amenable to the C–H borylation–reduction sequence include mono and diamino-arenes and carbazoles. This represents a simple method to make borylated molecules that would be convoluted to access otherwise (e.g. N-octyl-1-BPin-carbazole). Substituent variation is tolerated at boron as well as in the amide unit, with diarylborenium cations also amenable to reduction. This enables a double C–H borylation–reduction–hydrolysis sequence to access B,N-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including an example where both the boron and nitrogen centres contain functionalisable handles (N–H and B–OH). This method is therefore a useful addition to the metal-free borylation toolbox for accessing useful intermediates (ArylBPin) and novel B,N-PAHs.

The diastereo- and enantioselective allylation of ketones remains a synthetic challenge, with transition metal catalysis offering the most applied methods. Here, a boron-catalyzed allylation of ketones with allenes is presented. Excellent yield, regioselectivity, and diastereoselectivity were found across functionalized substrates. The reaction was further developed to accommodate an enantioenriched boron catalyst and thus gave asymmetric ketone allylation in good yield, diastereoselectivity, and enantioselectivity. Helicenes are chiral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of significant interest e.g. in supramolecular chemistry, materials science and asymmetric catalysis. Herein an enhanced N-directed electrophilic C-H borylation methodology has been developed that provides access to azaborine containing helicenes (BN-helicenes). This borylation process proceeds via protonation of an aminoborane with bistriflimidic acid. DFT calculations reveal the borenium cation formed by protonation to be more electrophilic than the product derived from aminoborane activation with BBr3. The synthesised helicenes include BN-analogues of archetypal all carbon [5]- and [6]helicenes. The replacement of a CC with a BN unit (that has a longer bond) on the outer helix increases the strain in the BN congeners and the racemization half-life for a BN-[5]helicene relative to the all carbon [5]helicene. BN incorporation also increases the fluorescence efficency of the helicenes, a direct effect of BN incorporation altering the distribution of the key frontier orbitals across the helical backbone relative to carbo-helicenes.

Hole transport materials (HTMs) based on truxene cores have emerged as promising candidates in recent years. They are noted by properties such as higher hole mobility and higher glass transition temperature than the 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis (N,N-di-p-methoxyphenamine)-9,9′-spirobiflourene (spiro-MeOTAD), as well as good hydrophobicity and energy alignment. Truxene derivatives have been studied for application in transistors, OLEDs, lasers, supercapacitors, etc., however, there are only a few studies on their use as HTMs in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, we synthesised a novel small organic molecule HTM with a monothiatruxene (TrxS) core, namely TrxS-2MeOTAD, and characterised its basic properties and ability as an HTM in n–i–p planar PSCs. The TrxS-2MeOTAD showed suitable electrochemical, optical, structural and thermal properties for an HTM, such as a relatively high glass transition temperature (145 °C) and stable amorphous nature when deposited as films. The PSCs using TrxS-2MeOTAD achieved 18.9% power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the reference spiro-MeOTAD at 19.3% PCE. The unencapsulated TrxS-2MeOTAD devices showed better operational stability than spiro-MeOTAD, with a 1.5 times longer lifetime under constant AM1.5G illumination. Our results suggest that small molecules based on the TrxS core can be a promising direction for the development of alternative HTMs.

Arene C(sp2)-H bond borylation offers direct and efficient access to aryl boronic esters. Using in situ catalyst activation and photoirradiation, the iron-catalysed C(sp2)-H borylation reaction of carboarenes, pyrroles, and indoles has been developed using only bench-stable pre-catalysts and reagents. Good functional group tolerance was observed including those not tolerated under previous methods (ArNH2, ArOH, ArSiR3, ArP(O)(OR)2, ArC(O)NR2). Mechanistic studies revealed iron-catalysed reductive deoxygenation, C-F protodefluorination, and a demethylation of aryl methyl ethers by C-O sigma bond hydroboration.

High oxidation-state carbonyl coupling partners including esters and lactones were reacted with enones to give aldol-type products directly using two-fold organoborane catalysis. This new retrosynthetic disconnection to aldol-type products is compatible with enolisable coupling partners, without self-condensation, and couples the high reactivity of secondary dialkylboranes with the stability of pinacolboronic esters. Excellent chemoselectivity, substrate scope (including those containing reducible functionalities and free alcohols) and diastereocontrol were achieved to access both the syn- and anti-aldol-type products. Mechanistic studies confirmed the two-fold catalytic role of the single secondary borane catalyst for boron enolate formation and formation of an aldehyde surrogate from the ester or lactone coupling partner.

Transition metal complexes bearing metal–boron bonds are of particular relevance to catalytic C–H borylation reactions, with iridium polyboryl and polyhydrido-boryl complexes the current benchmark catalysts for these transformations. Herein, we demonstrate that polyhydride boryl phosphine rhenium complexes are accessible and catalyze the C–H borylation of heteroaromatic substrates. Reaction of [K(DME)(18-c-6)][ReH4(Bpin)(η2-HBpin)(κ2-H2Bpin)] 1 with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) produced [K(18-c-6)][ReH4(η2-HBpin)(dppp)] 2 through substitution of two equivalents of HBpin, and protonation of 2 formed the neutral complex [ReH6(Bpin)(dppp)] 3. Combined X-ray crystallographic and DFT studies show that 2 is best described as a σ-borane complex, whereas 3 is a boryl complex. Significantly, the boryl complex 3 acted as a catalyst for the C(sp2)–H borylation of a variety of heteroarenes (14 examples including furan, thiophene, pyrrole and indole derivatives) and displayed similar reactivity to the iridium analogues.

The experimental isolation of H-bond energetics from the typically dominant influence of the solvent remains challenging. Here we use synthetic molecular balances to quantify amine/amide H-bonds in competitive solvents. Over 200 conformational free energy differences were determined using 24 H-bonding balances in 9 solvents spanning a wide polarity range. The correlations between experimental interaction energies and gas-phase computed energies exhibited wild solvent-dependent variation. However, excellent correlations were found between the same computed energies and the experimental data following empirical dissection of solvent effects using Hunter’s α/β solvation model. In addition to facilitating the direct comparison of experimental and computational data, changes in the fitted donor and acceptor constants reveal the energetics of secondary local interactions such as competing H-bonds.

The activation and functionalization of carbon–fluorine bonds represent a significant synthetic challenge, given the high thermodynamic barrier to C–F bond cleavage. Stoichiometric hydridoborane-mediated C–F functionalization has recently emerged, but is yet to be rendered catalytic. Herein, the borane-catalyzed coupling of alkyl fluorides with arenes (carbon–carbon bond formation) and carboxylic acids (carbon–oxygen bond formation) has been developed using transborylation reactions to achieve catalytic turnover. Successful C–C and C–O coupling across a variety of structurally and electronically differentiated arenes and carboxylic acids was achieved using 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (H-B-9-BBN) as the catalyst and pinacolborane (HBpin), with broad functional group tolerance. Experimental and computational studies suggest a mechanistic dichotomy for the carbon–carbon and carbon–oxygen coupling reactions. B–F transborylation (B–F/B–H metathesis) between F-B-9-BBN and HBpin enabled catalytic turnover for carbon–carbon bond formation, whereas direct exchange between the alkyl fluoride and acyloxyboronic ester (C–F/B–O metathesis) was proposed for carbon–oxygen coupling, where H-B-9-BBN catalyzed the dehydrocoupling of the carboxylic acid with HBpin.

A [Mn18] wheel of wheels is obtained from the reaction of MnBr2·4H2O and LH3 in MeOH. The metallic skeleton reveals two asymmetric [MnIII6MnII2] square wheels connected into a larger wheel via two MnII ions. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data reveal competing exchange interactions, supported by computational studies.

Interactions between carbonyl groups are prevalent in protein structures. Earlier investigations identified dominant electrostatic dipolar interactions, while others implicated lone pair n→π* orbital delocalisation. Here these observations are reconciled. A combined experimental and computational approach confirmed the dominance of electrostatic interactions in a new series of synthetic molecular balances, while also highlighting the distance‐dependent observation of inductive polarisation manifested by n→π* orbital delocalisation. Computational fiSAPT energy decomposition and natural bonding orbital analyses correlated with experimental data to reveal the contexts in which short‐range inductive polarisation augment electrostatic dipolar interactions. Thus, we provide a framework for reconciling the context dependency of the dominance of electrostatic interactions and the occurrence of n→π* orbital delocalisation in C=O⋅⋅⋅C=O interactions., Carbonyls reconciled: Electrostatics and orbital interactions have both been implicated in governing carbonyl interactions. A combined experimental and computational approach reconciles these conflicting explanations of the physiochemical origin of the interaction, demonstrating that orbital delocalisation augments electrostatic control, but for very close carbonyl contacts.

The reaction of a Lewis acidic borane with an alkyne is a key step in a diverse range of main group transformations. Alkyne 1,1-carboboration, the Wrackmeyer reaction, is an archetypal transformation of this kind. 1,1-Carboboration has been proposed to proceed through a zwitterionic intermediate. We report the isolation and spectroscopic, structural and computational characterization of the zwitterionic intermediates generated by reaction of B(C6 F5 )3 with alkynes. The stepwise reactivity of the zwitterion provides new mechanistic insight for 1,1-carboboration and wider B(C6 F5 )3 catalysis. Making use of intramolecular stabilization by a ferrocene substituent, we have characterized the zwitterionic intermediate in the solid state and diverted reactivity towards alkyne cyclotrimerization.

The self-assembly of Pd4L2 metallocylcic and Pd6L3 trigonal prismatic assemblies are described. The selection of one species over the other has been achieved by careful choice of ancilliary ligands, which switch the dynamics of the Pd-pyridine bonds such that a highly unusual and distorted smaller assembly can be kinetically trapped en route to the more energetically favourable larger species. Both assemblies provide promise as easy to access multicavity reaction vessels.

Dissolution of FeBr3 in a mixture of acetonitrile and 3,4-lutidine in the presence of an amine results in the formation of an [Fe30] molecular metal oxide containing alternating layers of tetrahedral and octahedral FeIII ions. Mass spectrometry suggests the cluster is formed quickly and remains stable in solution, while magnetic measurements and DFT calculations reveal competing antiferromagnetic exchange interactions.

Dialumenes are neutral AlI compounds with Al=Al multiple bonds. We report the isolation of an amidophosphine‐supported dialumene. Our X‐ray crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational DFT analyses reveal a long and extreme trans‐bent Al=Al bond with a low dissociation energy and bond order. In solution, the dialumene can dissociate into monomeric AlI species. Reactivity studies reveal two modes of reaction: as dialumene or as aluminyl monomers., A highly trans‐bent dialumene has marginal Al=Al double‐bond character and, in solution, can dissociate into monomeric aluminyl fragments. Reactivity studies reveal that both the dialuminene and aluminyl monomer can be trapped by varying the reaction partner. DFT calculations elaborate the origins of the extreme trans‐bending, weak Al=Al bond, and define substituent effects in dialumenes.

The combination of two different FeIII salts in a solvothermal reaction with triethanolamine results in the formation of a high symmetry [FeIII15] cluster whose structure conforms to a centred, tetrakis hexahedron., EKB and LC thank U21/EPSRC for funding a studentship (DJC). Aryl boronic esters are bench-stable, platform building-blocks that can be accessed through metal-catalyzed aryl C(sp2)–H borylation reactions. C(sp2)–H bond functionalization reactions using rare- and precious-metal catalysts are well established, and while examples utilizing Earth-abundant alternatives have emerged, manganese catalysis remains lacking. The manganese-catalyzed C–H borylation of furan and thiophene derivatives is reported alongside an in situ activation method providing facile access to the active manganese hydride species. Mechanistic investigations showed that blue light irradiation directly affected catalysis by action at the metal center, that C(sp2)–H bond borylation occurs through a C–H metallation pathway, and that the reversible coordination of pinacolborane to the catalyst gave a manganese borohydride complex, which was as an off-cycle resting state.

Heterolanthanide complexes are difficult to synthesize owing to the similar chemistry of the lanthanide ions. Consequently, very few purely heterolanthanide complexes have been synthesized. This is despite the fact that such complexes hold interesting optical and magnetic properties. To fine-tune these properties, it is important that one can choose complexes with any given combination of lanthanides. Herein we report a synthetic procedure which yields pure heterodinuclear lanthanide cryptates LnLn*LX3 (X = NO3− or OTf−) based on the cryptand H3L = N[(CH2)2N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 CH–R–CHN–(CH2)2]3N (R = m-C6H2OH-2-Me-5). In the synthesis the choice of counter ion and solvent proves crucial in controlling the Ln–Ln* composition. Choosing the optimal solvent and counter ion afford pure heterodinuclear complexes with any given combination of Gd(iii)–Lu(iii) including Y(iii). To demonstrate the versatility of the synthesis all dinuclear combinations of Y(iii), Gd(iii), Yb(iii) and Lu(iii) were synthesized resulting in 10 novel complexes of the form LnLn*L(OTf)3 with LnLn* = YbGd 1, YbY 2, YbLu 3, YbYb 4, LuGd 5, LuY 6, LuLu 7, YGd 8, YY 9 and GdGd 10. Through the use of 1H, 13C NMR and mass spectrometry the heterodinuclear nature of YbGd, YbY, YbLu, LuGd, LuY and YGd was confirmed. Crystal structures of LnLn*L(NO3)3 reveal short Ln–Ln distances of ∼3.5 Å. Using SQUID magnetometry the exchange coupling between the lanthanide ions was found to be anti-ferromagnetic for GdGd and YbYb while ferromagnetic for YbGd., We present a synthetic strategy to prepare the first heterodinuclear lanthanide(iii) cryptate complexes. The cryptate design ensures that the complexes are stable in solution for days. The exchange coupling in YbYb, GdGd and YbGd is investigated.

The separation and isolation of many of the platinum group metals (PGMs) is currently achieved commercially using solvent extraction processes. The extraction of rhodium is problematic however, as a variety of complexes of the form [RhCln(H2O)6‐n](n−3)− are found in hydrochloric acid, making it difficult to design a reagent that can extract all the rhodium. In this work, the synergistic combination of a primary amine (2‐ethylhexylamine, LA) with a primary amide (3,5,5‐trimethylhexanamide, L1) is shown to extract over 85 % of rhodium from 4 M hydrochloric acid. Two rhodium complexes are shown to reside in the organic phase, the ion‐pair [HLA]3[RhCl6] and the amide complex [HLA]2[RhCl5(L1)]; in the latter complex, the amide is tautomerized to its enol form and coordinated to the rhodium centre through the nitrogen atom. This insight highlights the need for ligands that target specific metal complexes in the aqueous phase and provides an efficient synergistic solution for the solvent extraction of rhodium., A synergistic combination of a simple primary amine (LA) and a simple primary amide (L1) is shown to extract rhodium from hydrochloric acid. A range of experimental and computational techniques are used to elucidate the structures of two different complexes in the organic phase; the ion‐pair [HLA]3[RhCl6] and the amide complex [HLA]2[RhCl5(L1)]. In the latter complex, the amide is tautomerized to its enol form and coordinated through the nitrogen atom.

Cationic zinc Lewis acids catalyse the C–H borylation of heteroarenes using pinacol borane (HBPin) or catechol borane (HBCat). An electrophile derived from [IDippZnEt][B(C6F5)4] (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) combined with N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMT) proved the most active in terms of C–H borylation scope and yield. Using this combination weakly activated heteroarenes, such as thiophene, were amenable to catalytic C–H borylation using HBCat. Competition reactions show these IDipp–zinc cations are highly oxophilic but less hydridophilic (relative to B(C6F5)3), and that borylation proceeds via activation of the hydroborane (and not the heteroarene) by a zinc electrophile. Based on DFT calculations this activation is proposed to proceed by coordination of a hydroborane oxygen to the zinc centre to generate a boron electrophile that effects C–H borylation. Thus, Lewis acid binding to oxygen sites of hydroboranes represents an under-developed route to access reactive borenium-type electrophiles for C–H borylation., Cationic zinc Lewis acids catalyse the C–H borylation of heteroarenes using pinacol borane (HBPin) or catechol borane (HBCat).

The equilibrium between disilenes (R2 Si=SiR2 ) and their silylsilylene (R3 Si-SiR) isomers has previously been inferred but not directly observed, except in the case of the parent system H2 Si=SiH2 . Here, we report a new method to prepare base-coordinated disilenes with hydride substituents. By varying the bulk of the coordinating base and other silicon substituents, we have been able to control the rearrangement of disilene adducts to their silylsilylene tautomers. Remarkably, 1,2 migration of a trimethylsilyl group is preferred over hydrogen migration. A DFT study of the reaction mechanism provides a rationale for the observed reactivity and detailed information on the bonding situation in base-stabilized disilenes.

A series of monometallic pentacoordinate FeIII chloride complexes have been prepared and characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the bis-chelated FeIII complexes bear distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries. The air- and moisture-stable FeIII complexes were screened as mediators in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and methyl methacrylate. Moderate to excellent control was achieved with dispersities as low as 1.1 for both poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene. Kinetic studies showed living characteristics, and end group analysis revealed the presence of olefin-terminated polymer chains, suggesting catalytic chain transfer as a competing polymerization mechanism. Although the catalysts are not the fastest Fe ATRP mediators, they are robust and flexible. Using propylene oxide as an initiator, the complexes were active catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide with moderate control. While the addition of propylene oxide has been reported as an efficient method of converting a metal–halide bond to a metal–alkoxide bond in situ, we show herein that this initiation mechanism can limit polymerization reproducibility and introduce an induction period.

Noncovalent encapsulation is an attractive approach for modifying the efficacy and physiochemical properties of both therapeutic and diagnostic species. Abiotic self-assembled constructs have shown promise, yet many hurdles between in vitro and (pre)clinical studies remain, not least the challenges associated with maintaining the macromolecular, hollow structure under nonequilibrium conditions. Using a kinetically robust CoIII4L6 tetrahedron we now show the feasibility of encapsulating the most widely used precursor in clinical nuclear diagnostic imaging, the γ-emitting [99mTc]TcO4– anion, under conditions compatible with in vivo administration. Subsequent single-photon emission computed tomography imaging of the caged-anion reveals a marked change in the biodistribution compared to the thyroid-accumulating free oxo-anion, thus moving clinical applications of (metallo)supramolecular species a step closer.

Reaction of Ni(OTf)2 with the bisbidentate quaterpyridine ligand L results in the self-assembly of a tetrahedral, paramagnetic cage [NiII4L6]8+. By selectively exchanging the bound triflate from [OTf⊂NiII4L6](OTf)7 (1), we have been able to prepare a series of host–guest complexes that feature an encapsulated paramagnetic tetrahalometallate ion inside this paramagnetic host giving [MIIX4⊂NiII4L6](OTf)6, where MIIX42− = MnCl42− (2), CoCl42− (5), CoBr42− (6), NiCl42− (7), and CuBr42− (8) or [MIIIX4⊂NiII4L6](OTf)7, where MIIIX4− = FeCl4− (3) and FeBr4− (4). Triflate-to-tetrahalometallate exchange occurs in solution and can also be accomplished through single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. Host–guest complexes 1–8 all crystallise as homochiral racemates in monoclinic space groups, wherein the four {NiN6} vertexes within a single Ni4L6 unit possess the same Δ or Λ stereochemistry. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data show that the magnetic exchange between metal ions in the host [NiII4] complex, and between the host and the MX4n− guest, are of comparable magnitude and antiferromagnetic in nature. Theoretically derived values for the magnetic exchange are in close agreement with experiment, revealing that large spin densities on the electronegative X-atoms of particular MX4n− guest molecules lead to stronger host–guest magnetic exchange interactions., The tetrahedral [NiII4L6]8+ cage can reversibly bind paramagnetic MX41/2− guests, inducing magnetic exchange interactions between host and guest.

Historically used in stoichiometric hydroalumination chemistry, recent advances have transformed aluminium hydrides into versatile catalysts for the hydroboration of unsaturated multiple bonds. This catalytic ability is founded on the defining reactivity of aluminium hydrides with alkynes and alkenes: 1,2‐hydroalumination of the unsaturated π‐system. This manuscript reports the aluminium hydride catalyzed dehydroborylation of terminal alkynes. A tethered intramolecular amine ligand controls reactivity at the aluminium hydride centre, switching off hydroalumination and instead enabling selective reactions at the alkyne C−H σ‐bond. Chemoselective C−H borylation was observed across a series of aryl‐ and alkyl‐substituted alkynes (21 examples). On the basis of kinetic and density functional theory studies, a mechanism in which C−H borylation proceeds by σ‐bond metathesis between pinacolborane (HBpin) and alkynyl aluminium intermediates is proposed., The aluminium hydride catalyzed dehydroborylation of terminal alkynes is reported. By using a tethered‐intramolecular‐amine Lewis base as a ligand at the aluminium hydride centre the reactivity is controlled. Hydroalumination is switched off and selective reactions at the alkyne C−H σ‐bond are enabled.

Heterometallic cooperativity is an emerging strategy to elevate polymerisation catalyst performance. Here, we report the first heterotrimetallic Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes supported by a ProPhenol ligand, which deliver “best of both” in cyclic ester ring-opening polymerisation, combining the outstanding activity (Na/K) and good control (Zn2) of homometallic analogues. Detailed NMR studies and density-functional theory calculations suggest that the Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes retain their heterometallic structures in the solution-state. To the best of our knowledge, the K/Zn2 analogue is the most active heterometallic catalyst reported for rac-lactide polymerisation (kobs = 1.7 × 10−2 s−1), giving activities five times faster than the Na/Zn2 complex. These versatile catalysts also display outstanding performance in ε-caprolatone and δ-valerolactone ring-opening polymerisation. These studies provide underpinning methodologies for future heterometallic polymerisation catalyst design, both in cyclic ester polymerisation and other ring-opening (co)polymerisation reactions., Cooperative heterotrimetallic Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes combine the excellent activities and control of the homometallic analogues, giving “best of both” in cyclic ester ring-opening polymerisation.

The fungal-derived bicyclo[2.2.2]diazaoctane alkaloids are of interest to the scientific community for their potent and varied biological activities. Within this large and diverse family of natural products, the insecticidal metabolite (+)-brevianamide A is particularly noteworthy for its synthetic intractability and inexplicable biogenesis. Despite five decades of research, this alkaloid has remained an elusive target for chemical synthesis due to insurmountable issues of reactivity and selectivity associated with all previously explored strategies. We herein report the chemical synthesis of (+)-brevianamide A (seven steps, 7.2% overall yield, 750 mg scale), which involves a bioinspired cascade transformation of the linearly fused (−)-dehydrobrevianamide E into the topologically complex bridged-spiro-fused structure of (+)-brevianamide A. Despite five decades of research, the alkaloid (+)-brevianamide A has remained an elusive target for chemical synthesis. Now, it has been shown that the total synthesis of (+)-brevianamide A can be achieved in seven steps and 7.2% overall yield to give 750 mg of the target compound.

In situ single-crystal diffraction and spectroscopic techniques have been used to study a previously unreported Cu-framework bis[1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dione]copper(ii) (CuPyr-I). CuPyr-I was found to exhibit high-pressure and low-temperature phase transitions, piezochromism, negative linear compressibility, and a pressure induced Jahn–Teller switch, where the switching pressure was hydrostatic media dependent., In situ high-pressure single-crystal diffraction and spectroscopic techniques have been used to study a previously unreported Cu-framework bis[1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dione]copper(ii) (CuPyr-I).

A bio-inspired, pyrrolidine-mediated, dimerization of para-quinols has been developed. It represents one of the most complex, yet general, dimerization reactions ever disclosed, selectively forming four new bonds, four new rings, and eight new contiguous stereogenic centres. The para-quinol starting materials are easily handled, bench-stable compounds, accessed in just one step from aromatic feedstocks. The reaction can be scaled up to give grams of polycyclic material, primed for further elaboration.

The crystallisation of methyl stearate under a range of crystallisation conditions has been studied and three new polymorphs have been identified and structurally characterised. Form III (monoclinic, space group Cc, Z = 8) was obtained at room temperature by slow evaporation of a saturated solution in CS2. Form IV (monoclinic, space group C2/c, Z = 4) was obtained by slow cooling of the melt. Both structures were characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Form V (monoclinic, space group Cc, Z = 4) was obtained from the melt by rapid cooling. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction methods were employed in the determination of this structure. Form V shows highly anisotropic thermal expansion, with expansion along the crystallographic b-axis being substantially greater than along the other two axes.

The total synthesis of a dimeric thymol derivative (thymarnicol) isolated from Arnica sachalinensis was accomplished in 6 steps. A key biomimetic Diels–Alder dimerization was found to occur at ambient temperature and the final oxidative cyclization occurs when the substrate is exposed to air and visible light. These results indicate that this natural product is likely the result of spontaneous (non‐enzyme‐mediated) reactivity.

Cp*Al reacts with diphenylacetylene to form a Cp*-substituted 1,4-dialuminacyclohexene. The dialuminacyclohexene reacts with four equivalents of an isonitrile to couple the terminal carbon atoms, forming 6 new carbon-carbon bonds and resulting in a zwitterionic diamide ligand which contains a carbocationic backbone.

The dissolution of anhydrous iron bromide in a mixture of pyridine and acetonitrile, in the presence of an organic amine, results in the formation of an [Fe34] metal oxide molecule, structurally characterised by alternate layers of tetrahedral and octahedral FeIII ions connected by oxide and hydroxide ions. The outer shell of the complex is capped by a combination of pyridine molecules and bromide ions. Magnetic data, measured at temperatures as low as 0.4 K and fields up to 35 T, reveal competing antiferromagnetic exchange interactions; DFT calculations showing that the magnitudes of the coupling constants are highly dependent on both the Fe‐O‐Fe angles and Fe−O distances. The simplicity of the synthetic methodology, and the structural similarity between [Fe34], bulk iron oxides, previous FeIII–oxo cages, and polyoxometalates (POMs), hints that much larger molecular FeIII oxides can be made., E.K.B. thanks the EPSRC for funding (grants EP/N01331X/1 and EP/P025986/1). Metallophilic interactions are increasingly recognized as playing an important role in molecular assembly, catalysis, and bio-imaging. However, present knowledge of these interactions is largely derived from solid-state structures and gas-phase computational studies rather than quantitative experimental measurements. Here, we have experimentally quantified the role of aurophilic (AuI ⋅⋅⋅AuI ), platinophilic (PtII ⋅⋅⋅PtII ), palladophilic (PdII ⋅⋅⋅PdII ), and nickelophilic (NiII ⋅⋅⋅NiII ) interactions in self-association and ligand-exchange processes. All of these metallophilic interactions were found to be too weak to be well-expressed in several solvents. Computational energy decomposition analyses supported the experimental finding that metallophilic interactions are overall weak, meaning that favorable dispersion and orbital hybridization contributions from M⋅⋅⋅M binding are largely outcompeted by electrostatic or dispersion interactions involving ligand or solvent molecules. This combined experimental and computational study provides a general understanding of metallophilic interactions and indicates that great care must be taken to avoid over-attributing the energetic significance of metallophilic interactions.

Barbituric acid BAH reacts with potassium, rubidium and caesium iodides in methanol, forming anhydrous BAH·MI. BAH·CsI has a different 8-fold coordination geometry from corresponding alkali metal bromides, intermediate between triangular dodecahedral and square antiprismatic. BAH·KI and BAH·RbI display features that are new for this family, with a high coordination number of 9, and with no involvement of iodide in either coordination or hydrogen bonding, its environment being six BAH molecules. BAH·NaCl·2H2O, prepared by successive treatment of BAH in water with sodium hydroxide and dilute hydrochloric acid, is isostructural with other chlorides and bromides, with 7-coordinate Na+ and a network of hydrogen bonding. Two BAH molecules are oxidatively coupled by aqueous potassium permanganate to generate 5-hydroxyhydurilic acid, isolated as a hydrated potassium salt with K+ in an unusually low 5-coordination. The folding of the BAH molecule in its full range of known crystal structures is analysed; the dihedral folding angle ranges from 0 to approximately 20 °, uncorrelated with any other particular features of the structures. Bidentate 5,5ʹ-alkyl-3,3ʹ-bi-1H-pyrazole and 2-(5-alkyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine ligands, L5 and L6, have been shown to be stronger synergists for the solvent extraction of Ni(II) from sulfate solutions by dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid (DNNSAH) than the structurally related tridentate ligand 2,6-bis-[5-n-nonylpyrazol-3-yl]pyridine, L1, previously reported by Zhou and Pesic. The bidentate ligands are highly selective, providing the option of sequential recovery of Ni(II) and Co(II) and rejection of other metals commonly found in the liquors resulting from the acidic sulfate leaching of laterite ores. They were the strongest synergists identified in a screening carried out on 18 types of bidentate and tridentate N-heterocyclic ligands, including the recently reported 2-(2ʹ-pyridyl)imidazoles, L9−11. X-ray crystal structures of Ni(II) complexes of model ligands for L5 and L6, having t-butyl rather than long-chain alkyl groups and with 2-naphthalene sulfonate rather than DNNSA− as counteranions, show that the [Ni(L)3]2+ complexes form strong H-bonds from the pyrazolyl NH groups to the oxygen atoms of the sulfonate groups, an arrangement that will stabilize [Ni(L)3·(DNNSA)2] assemblies and shield their polar functionalities from diluent molecules of the water-immiscible phase. UV–visible spectra and mass spectrometry provide evidence for the strong synergists displacing all water molecules from the inner coordination sphere of the Ni(II) ions.

The asymmetric hydrocyanation of vinylarenes was investigated using hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the presence of 5 mol% of a catalyst prepared from a phenol-derived chiral phosphine-phosphite ligand and bis(cyclooctadiene)nickel [Ni(cod)2]. The reactions were performed in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at room temperature to give exclusively the branched nitriles with superior enantioselectivities of 88–99% ee for vinylarenes and 74–94% ee for vinylheteroarenes, respectively. Using styrene as a model substrate it was shown that the catalyst loading could be decreased to 0.42 mol% without any loss of selectivity (88% ee). The structure of the pre-catalyst, i.e., a tetrahedral Ni(0)(P,P-chelate)(cod) complex, was proven by X-ray and NMR analysis. Additional insight into the reaction course was gained by monitoring the hydrocyanation of styrene-d8 by means of 2D NMR spectroscopy.

Formal exchange of C=C units with isoelectronic B=N or B=P units can provide access to molecules with unique electronic or chemical properties. Herein, we report the simple solution-phase generation of highly reactive phosphaborenes, RP=BR, and demonstrate their use for the introduction of P=B units into organic systems. Ring opening of a P-B-containing cyclobutene isostere provided access to unique 1,4-boraphosphabutadiene systems with conjugated main-group multiple bonds.

The first use of a dinuclear UIII/UIII complex in the activation of small molecules is reported., The first use of a dinuclear UIII/UIII complex in the activation of small molecules is reported. The octadentate Schiff-base pyrrole, anthracene-hinged ‘Pacman’ ligand LA combines two strongly reducing UIII centres and three borohydride ligands in [M(THF)4][{U(BH4)}2(μ-BH4)(LA)(THF)2] 1-M, (M = Li, Na, K). The two borohydride ligands bound to uranium outside the macrocyclic cleft are readily substituted by aryloxide ligands, resulting in a single, weakly-bound, encapsulated endo group 1 metal borohydride bridging the two UIII centres in [{U(OAr)}2(μ-MBH4)(LA)(THF)2] 2-M (OAr = OC6H2tBu3-2,4,6, M = Na, K). X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that, for 2-K, in addition to the endo-BH4 ligand the potassium counter-cation is also incorporated into the cleft through η5-interactions with the pyrrolides instead of extraneous donor solvent. As such, 2-K has a significantly higher solubility in non-polar solvents and a wider U–U separation compared to the ‘ate’ complex 1. The cooperative reducing capability of the two UIII centres now enforced by the large and relatively flexible macrocycle is compared for the two complexes, recognising that the borohydrides can provide additional reducing capability, and that the aryloxide-capped 2-K is constrained to reactions within the cleft. The reaction between 1-Na and S8 affords an insoluble, presumably polymeric paramagnetic complex with bridging uranium sulfides, while that with CS2 results in oxidation of each UIII to the notably high UV oxidation state, forming the unusual trithiocarbonate (CS3)2– as a ligand in [{U(CS3)}2(μ-κ2:κ2-CS3)(LA)] (4). The reaction between 2-K and S8 results in quantitative substitution of the endo-KBH4 by a bridging persulfido (S2)2– group and oxidation of each UIII to UIV, yielding [{U(OAr)}2(μ-κ2:κ2-S2)(LA)] (5). The reaction of 2-K with CS2 affords a thermally unstable adduct which is tentatively assigned as containing a carbon disulfido (CS2)2– ligand bridging the two U centres (6a), but only the mono-bridged sulfido (S)2– complex [{U(OAr)}2(μ-S)(LA)] (6) is isolated. The persulfido complex (5) can also be synthesised from the mono-bridged sulfido complex (6) by the addition of another equivalent of sulfur.

Three new complexes of the [Re6(μ3-Se)8]2+ core-containing cluster with isonicotinic acid (INA) were synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR (1H and 31P) and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Their molecular and crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Unusual degrees of deprotonation of the INA ligand(s) are observed in the crystal structure, possibly due to the activation by the Lewis acidic cluster core. Extensive hydrogen bonding interactions occurring between carboxylate groups of neighboring cluster units as revealed by crystallographic studies lead to the assembly of both linear and zigzag multi-cluster chains in the solid state.

Guest encapsulation underpins the functional properties of self-assembled capsules yet identifying systems capable of strongly binding small organic molecules in solution remains a challenge. Most coordination capsules rely on the hydrophobic effect to ensure effective solution-phase association. In contrast, we show that using non-interacting anions in apolar solvents can maximize favorable interactions between a cationic Pd2L4 host and charge-neutral guests resulting in a dramatic increase in binding strength. With quinone-type guests, association constants in excess of 108 m−1 were observed, comparable to the highest previously recorded constant for a metallosupramolecular capsule. Modulation of optoelectronic properties of the guests was also observed, with encapsulation either changing or switching-on luminescence not present in the bulk phase.

Two new complexes in which 2-phenylazopyridine (pap) chelates iron in hydrogenase mimics, 1,2-(μ-benzenedithiolato)-2′-phenylazopyridinediirontetracarbonyl and 1,3-(μ-propanedithiolato)-2′-phenylazo- pyridinediirontetracarbonyl have been synthesized and fully characterized, including X-ray crystal structure determinations. The electronic structures of the two complexes are compared with the analogous 1,2-(μ-benzenedithiolato)diironhexacarbonyl and 1,3-(μ-propanedithiolato)diironhexacarbonyl complexes. Based on comparison of the crystal structures, the overall bonding in the 2Fe2S core of the molecules is little perturbed by replacing two carbonyl ligands with the pap ligand. Also, the coordinated pap ligand retains a similar structure and N˭N bond distance to that of the uncoordinated ligand. However, the charge asymmetry in the 2Fe2S core that results from chelating the pap ligand on one of the iron atoms induces substantial localization of the individual orbital characters in the 2Fe2S core. Two series of structurally related alkoxy-tethered NHC iron(II) complexes have been developed as catalysts for the regioselective hydroboration of alkenes. Significantly, Markonikov-selective alkene hydroboration with HBpin has been controllably achieved using an iron catalyst (11 examples, 35–90% isolated yield) with up to 37:1 branched:linear selectivity. anti-Markovnikov-selective alkene hydroboration was also achieved using HBcat and modification of the ligand backbone (6 examples, 44–71% yields). In both cases, ligand design has enabled activator-free low-oxidation-state iron catalysis.

A simple alkylamine [(iPr)2NEt] has been used to activate an air- and moisture-stable iron(II) pre-catalyst for alkene and alkyne hydrofunctionalization reactions. This amine activation has enabled the highly operationally simple hydrosilylation and hydroboration of alkenes and alkynes using just 0.25–2 mol% iron catalyst and 1–25 mol% amine. Significantly, these reactions proceed in equal yield under both air and inert reaction conditions.

Supramolecular construction strategies have overwhelmingly relied on the principles of thermodynamic control. While this approach has yielded an incredibly diverse and striking collection of ensembles, there are downsides, most obviously the necessity to trade-off reversibility against structural integrity. Herein we describe an alternative "assembly-followed-by-fixing" approach that possesses the high-yielding, atom-efficient advantages of reversible self-assembly reactions, yet gives structures that possess a covalent-like level of kinetic robustness. We have chosen to exemplify these principles in the preparation of a series of M2L3 helicates and M4L6 tetrahedra. While the rigidity of various bis(bidentate) ligands causes the larger species to be energetically preferred, we are able to freeze the self-assembly process under "non-ambient" conditions, to selectivity give the disfavored M2L3 helicates. We also demonstrate "kinetic-stimuli" (redox and light)-induced switching between architectures, notably reconstituting the lower energy tetrahedra into highly distorted helicates.

1,4-Piperazine-2,5-diones possessing C2hmolecular symmetry and bearing four methoxy, ethoxy, butoxy, hexyloxy, octyloxy, nonyloxy, dodecyloxy, or octadecyloxy groups weresynthesized from 2-amino-4,7-dialkoxyindan-2-carboxylic acids. Where possible, the piperazinediones were crystallized from appropriate solvents and the supramolecular organizations were determined by X-ray crystallography. In each case so studied, crystal assembly via three mutually orthogonal interactions, namely, R22(8) hydrogen bonding, arene perpendicular edge-to-center interactions, and alkyl chain interdigitation, was observed. The thermochemical properties of these compounds were studied by modulated differential scanning calorimetry. In most cases, one or more reversible thermal events were observed between room temperature and melting to an isotropic liquid. As part of a study into new Fentanyl-derived opioid compounds with potent analgesic activity and reduced side effects the starting material title compound, C14H21N3O (1), was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is monoclinic Cc with unit cell parameters a = 14.1480(3) A, b = 14.1720(4) A, c = 27.6701(7) A, β = 96.956(1)°, α = γ = 90°. The compound has crystallized with four crystallographically unique molecules in the asymmetric unit; each molecule has a very similar conformation and an analysis of the structure shows that although all four unique molecules overlay very well there is no evidence of pseudo-symmetry which would relate the molecules in the higher symmetry space group C2/c. The crystal packing consists of two separate hydrogen bonded chains which are linked together to form a thick 2D structure in the ab plane. The compound N′-(1-benzylpiperidin-4-yl)acetohydrazide crystallizes with four crystallographically unique molecules in the asymmetric unit; each molecule has a very similar conformation but there is no evidence of pseudo-symmetry.

To investigate neighboring amide participation in thioether oxidation, which may be relevant to brain oxidative stress accompanying beta-amyloid peptide aggregation, conformationally constrained methylthionorbornyl derivatives with amido moieties were synthesized and characterized, including an X-ray crystallographic study of one of them. Electrochemical oxidation of these compounds, studied by cyclic voltammetry, revealed that their oxidation peak potentials were less positive for those compounds in which neighboring group participation was geometrically possible. Pulse radiolysis studies provided evidence for bond formation between the amide moiety and sulfur on one-electron oxidation in cases where the moieties are juxtaposed. Furthermore, molecular constraints in spiro analogues revealed that S-O bonds are formed on one-electron oxidation. DFT calculations suggest that isomeric sigma*(SO) radicals are formed in these systems.
