We study the nonlinear mean-field dynamics of molecule formation at coherent photo- and magneto-association of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate for the case when the external field configuration is defined by the quasi-linear level crossing Demkov-Kunike model, characterized by a bell-shaped pulse and finite variation of the detuning. We present a general approach to construct an approximation describing the temporal dynamics of the molecule formation in the weak interaction regime and apply the developed method to the nonlinear Demkov-Kunike problem. The presented approximation, written as a scaled solution to the linear problem associated to the nonlinear one we treat, contains fitting parameters which are determined through a variational procedure. Assuming that the parameters involved in the solution of the linear problem are not modified, we suggest an analytical expression for the scaling parameter., 6 pages, 4 figures

The ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) has been crucial for the development of a vast array of atomic scale devices and structures ranging from nanoscale motors and switches to quantum corrals. Molecular motors in particular have attracted considerable attention in view of their potential for assembly into complex nanoscale machines. Whereas the manipulated atoms or molecules are usually on top of a substrate, motors embedded in a lattice can be very beneficial for bottom-up construction, and may additionally be used to probe the in uence of the lattice on the electronic properties of the host material. Here, we present the discovery of controlled manipulation of a rotor in Fe doped Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. We find that the current into the rotor, which can be finely tuned with the voltage, drives omni-directional switching between three equivalent orientations, each of which can be frozen in at small bias voltage. Using current fluctuation measurements at 1MHz and model simulations, we estimate that switching rates of hundreds of kHz for sub-nA currents are achieved., Comment: Published in ACS Nano, this is the originally submitted manuscript prior to changes during the review process

Recent developments in the area of resonant dielectric nanostructures has created attractive opportunities for the concentrating and manipulating light at the nanoscale and the establishment of new exciting field of all-dielectric nanophotonics. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with nanopatterned surfaces are especially promising for these tasks. Still, the fabrication of these structures requires sophisticated lithographic processes, drastically complicating application prospects. To bridge this gap and broaden the application scope of TMDC nanomaterials, we report here femtosecond laser-ablative fabrication of water-dispersed spherical TMDC (MoS2 and WS2) nanoparticles (NPs) of variable size (5 - 250 nm). Such nanoparticles demonstrate exciting optical and electronic properties inherited from TMDC crystals, due to preserved crystalline structure, which offers a unique combination of pronounced excitonic response and high refractive index value, making possible a strong concentration of electromagnetic field in the nanoparticles. Furthermore, such nanoparticles offer additional tunability due to hybridization between the Mie and excitonic resonances. Such properties bring to life a number of nontrivial effects, including enhanced photoabsorption and photothermal conversion. As an illustration, we demonstrate that the nanoparticles exhibit a very strong photothermal response, much exceeding that of conventional dielectric nanoresonators based on Si. Being in a mobile colloidal state and exhibiting superior optical properties compared to other dielectric resonant structures, the synthesized TMDC nanoparticles offer opportunities for the development of next-generation nanophotonic and nanotheranostic platforms, including photothermal therapy and multimodal bioimaging., 18 pages, 4 figures

Static (DC) and dynamic (AC, at 14 MHz and 8 GHz) magnetic susceptibilities of single crystals of a ferromagnetic superconductor, EuFe2(As1−xPx)2 (x = 0.23), were measured in pristine state and after different doses of 2.5 MeV electron or 3.5 MeV proton irradiation. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc(H), shows an extraordinarily large decrease. It starts at Tc(H=0)≈24K in the pristine sample for both AC and DC measurements, but moves to almost half of that value after moderate irradiation dose. Remarkably, after the irradiation not only Tc moves significantly below the FM transition, its values differ drastically for measurements at different frequencies, ≈16 K in AC measurements and ≈12 K in a DC regime. We attribute such a large difference in Tc to the appearance of the spontaneous internal magnetic field below the FM transition, so that the superconductivity develops directly into the mixed spontaneous vortex-antivortex state where the onset of diamagnetism is known to be frequency-dependent. We also examined the response to the applied DC magnetic fields and studied the annealing of irradiated samples, which almost completely restores the superconducting transition. Overall, our results suggest that in EuFe2(As1−xPx)2 superconductivity is affected by local-moment ferromagnetism mostly via the spontaneous internal magnetic fields induced by the FM subsystem. Another mechanism is revealed upon irradiation where magnetic defects created in ordered Eu2+ lattice act as efficient pairbreakers leading to a significant Tc reduction upon irradiation compared to other 122 compounds. On the other hand, the exchange interactions seem to be weakly screened by the superconducting phase leading to a modest increase of Tm (less than 1 K) after the irradiation drives Tc to below Tm. Our results suggest that FM and SC phases coexist microscopically in the same volume.

Here we examine the role of the amorphous insulating substrate in the thermal relaxation in thin NbN, InO$_x$, and Au/Ni films at temperatures above 5 K. The studied samples are made up of metal bridges on an amorphous insulating layer lying on or suspended above a crystalline substrate. Noise thermometry was used to measure the electron temperature $T_e$ of the films as a function of Joule power per unit of area $P_{2D}$. In all samples, we observe the dependence $P_{2D}\propto T_e^n$ with the exponent $n\simeq 2$, which is inconsistent with both electron-phonon coupling and Kapitza thermal resistance. In suspended samples, the functional dependence of $P_{2D}(T_e)$ on the length of the amorphous insulating layer is consistent with the linear $T$-dependence of the thermal conductivity, which is related to lattice excitations (diffusons) for the phonon mean free path smaller than the dominant phonon wavelength. We consider a non-chiral Luttinger liquid in the presence of a backscattering Hamiltonian which has an extended range. Right/left moving fermions at a given location can thus be converted as left/right moving fermions at a different location, within a specific range. We perform a momentum shell renormalization group treatment which gives the evolution of the relative degrees of freedom of this Hamiltonian contribution under the renormalization flow, and we study a few realistic examples of this extended backscattering Hamiltonian. We find that, for repulsive Coulomb interaction in the Luttinger liquid, any such Hamiltonian contribution evolves into a delta-like scalar potential upon renormalization to a zero temperature cutoff. On the opposite, for attractive couplings, the amplitude of this kinetic Hamiltonian is suppressed, rendering the junction fully transparent. As the renormalization procedure may have to be stopped because of experimental constraints such as finite temperature, we predict the actual spatial shape of the kinetic Hamiltonian at different stages of the renormalization procedure, as a function of the position and the Luttinger interaction parameter, and show that it undergoes structural changes. This renormalized kinetic Hamiltonian has thus to be used as an input for the perturbative calculation of the current, for which we provide analytic expressions in imaginary time. Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. Both axions and ALPs are very well motivated candidates for Dark Matter, and in addition, they would be copiously produced at the sun's core. A relevant effort during the last decade has been the CAST experiment at CERN, the most sensitive axion helioscope to-date. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a large-scale 4th generation helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for solar axions or ALPs with a signal to background ratio of about 5 orders of magnitude higher than CAST. Recently the IAXO collaboration has proposed and intermediate experimental stage, BabyIAXO, conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics, detectors and sun-tracking systems) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as pathfinder for IAXO but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with record and relevant physics reach in itself with potential for discovery. BabyIAXO was endorsed by the Physics Review committee of DESY last May 2019. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was sent to Mars in March 2016 to search for trace gases diagnostic of active geological or biogenic processes. We report the first observation of the spectral features of Martian ozone (O3) in the mid-infrared range using the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) Mid-InfaRed (MIR) channel, a cross-dispersion spectrometer operating in solar occultation mode with the finest spectral resolution of any remote sensing mission to Mars. Observations of ozone were made at high northern latitudes (>65N) prior to the onset of the 2018 global dust storm (Ls = 163-193). During this fast transition phase between summer and winter ozone distribution, the O3 volume mixing ratio observed is 100-200 ppbv near 20 km. These amounts are consistent with past observations made at the edge of the southern polar vortex in the ultraviolet range. The observed spectral signature of ozone at 3000-3060 cm-1 directly overlaps with the spectral range of the methane (CH4) nu3 vibration-rotation band, and it, along with a newly discovered CO2 band in the same region, may interfere with measurements of methane abundance., 7 pages, 6 figures

We observe a new regime of coherent XUV radiation generation in noble gases induced by femtosecond pulses at very high intensities. This XUV emission has both a reduced divergence and spectral width as compared to high-order harmonic generation (HHG). It is not emitted at a moderate intensity of the driving pulses where only high-order harmonics are generated. At high driving intensities, the additional XUV comb appears near all harmonic orders and even exceeds the HHG signal on the axis. The peaks are observed in several gases and their frequencies do not depend on the driving intensity or gas pressure. We analyze the divergence, spectral width and spectral shift of this XUV emission. We show that these specific features are well explained by high-order parametric generation (HPG) involving multiphoton absorption and combined emission of an idler THz radiation and an XUV beam with remarkably smooth spatial and spectral characteristics., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Using numerical simulations of lattice QCD with physical quark masses, we reveal the influence of magnetic-field background on chiral and deconfinement crossovers in finite-temperature QCD at low baryonic density. In the absence of thermodynamic singularity, we identify these transitions with inflection points of the approximate order parameters: normalized light-quark condensate and renormalized Polyakov loop, respectively. We show that the quadratic curvature of the chiral transition temperature in the ``temperature--chemical potential'' plane depends rather weakly on the strength of the background magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields, the thermal width of the chiral crossover gets narrower as the density of the baryon matter increases, possibly indicating a proximity to a real thermodynamic phase transition. Remarkably, the curvature of the chiral thermal width flips its sign at $eB_{\mathrm{fl}} \simeq 0.6\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$, so that above the flipping point $B > B_{\mathrm{fl}}$, the chiral width gets wider as the baryon density increases. Approximately at the same strength of magnetic field, the chiral and deconfining crossovers merge together at $T \approx 140\,\mathrm{MeV}$. The phase diagram in the parameter space ``temperature-chemical potential-magnetic field'' is outlined, and single-quark entropy and single-quark magnetization are explored. The curvature of the chiral thermal width allows us to estimate an approximate position of the chiral critical endpoint at zero magnetic field: $(T_c^{\text{CEP}}, ��_B^{\text{CEP}})= (100(25)\, \text{MeV},\ 800(140)\,\text{MeV})$., 22 pages, 17 figures; a video file revealing the evolution of the phase diagram is attached

International audience; Microstructure of boron subphosphide B12P2 produced by self-propagated high-temperature synthesis has been studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Two systems of twins have been found i.e. conventional twins on the (0003)h plane and nanotwins resulting from duplication of the rhombohedral unit cell of B12P2 along one of the basic vectors.

We study quantum information properties of a seven-level system realized by a particle in an one-dimensional square-well trap. Features of encodings of seven-level systems in a form of three-qubit or qubit-qutrit systems are discussed. We use the three-qubit encoding of the system in order to investigate subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for the thermal state of the particle. The qubit-qutrit encoding is employed to suggest a single qudit algorithm for calculation of parity of a bit string. The Sun is the most studied of all stars. It is a reference for all other observed stars and a laboratory of fundamental physics helping us understand processes occuring in conditions irreproducible on Earth. However, our understanding of the Sun is currently stained by the solar modelling problem which can stem from various causes, such as the opacities, the equation of state and the mixing of chemical elements. We combine inversions of sound speed, an entropy proxy and the Ledoux discriminant with constraints such as the position of the base of the convective zone and the photospheric helium abundance. We test various combinations of standard ingredients for solar modelling such as abundance tables, equation of state, formalism for convection and diffusion and opacity tables and study the diagnostic potential of the inversions to constrain ad-hoc modifications of the opacity profile and additional mixing below the convective envelope. Combining inversions provides stringent constraints on the modifications on the models, far beyond what is achievable only from sound speed inversions. We constrain the form and amplitude of the opacity increase required and show that a 15% increase at log T=6.35 provides a significant improvement but that a more global increase of the opacity, within the uncertainties of current tables, coupled with an additional mixing at the bottom of the convective zone gives the best agreement for low metallicity models. We show that high metallicity models do not satisfy all the inversion results. We conclude that the solar problem likely occurs from various small sources, as ingredients such as the equation of state or the formalism of convection can induce small but significant changes and that using phase shift analyses combined with our approach is the next step for a better understanding of the inaccuracies of solar models just below the convective envelope., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The paper presents a derivation of analytical components of S-matrices for arbitrary planar diffractive structures and metasurfaces in the Fourier domain. Attained general formulas for S-matrix components can be applied within both formulations in the Cartesian and curvilinear metric. A numerical method based on these results can benefit from all previous improvements of the Fourier domain methods. In addition, we provide expressions for S-matrix calculation in case of periodically corrugated layers of 2D materials, which are valid for arbitrary corrugation depth-to-period ratios. We show that bringing into proximity two topologically trivial systems can give rise to a topological phase. More specifically, we study a 1D metallic nanowire proximitized by a 2D superconducting substrate with a mixed s-wave and p-wave pairing, and we demonstrate both analytically and numerically that the phase diagram of such a setup can be richer than reported before. Thus, apart from the two "expected" well-known phases (i.e., where the substrate and the wire are both simultaneously trivial or topological), we show that there exist two peculiar phases in which the nanowire can be in a topological regime while the substrate is trivial, and vice versa., 8 pages, 6 figures (+ 6 pages, 3 figures in Appendixes)

The Scale Magnetic Effect (SME) is the generation of electric current due to conformal anomaly in external magnetic field in curved spacetime. The effect appears in a vacuum with electrically charged massless particles. Similarly to the Hall effect, the direction of the induced anomalous current is perpendicular to the direction of the external magnetic field $\bf B$ and to the gradient of the conformal factor $\tau$, while the strength of the current is proportional to the beta function of the theory. In massive electrodynamics the SME remains valid, but the value of the induced current differs from the current generated in the system of massless fermions. In the present paper we use the Wigner--Weyl formalism to demonstrate that in accordance with the decoupling property of heavy fermions the corresponding anomalous conductivity vanishes in the large-mass limit with $m^2 \gg |e {\bf B}|$ and $m \gg |\nabla \tau|$., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D

International audience; We consider the linear problem for water-waves created by sources on the bottom and the free surface in a 3-D basin having slowly varying profile $z=-D(x)$. The fluid verifies Euler-Poisson equations. These (non-linear) equations have been given a Hamiltonian form by Zakharov, involving canonical variables $(\xi(x,t),\eta(x,t))$ describing the dynamics of the free surface; variables $(\xi,\eta)$ are related by the free surface Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator. For a single variable $x\in{\bf R}$ and constant depth, DtN operator was explicitely computed in terms of a convergent series. Here we neglect quadratic terms in Zakharov equations, and consider the linear response to a disturbance of $D(x)$ harmonic in time when the wave-lenght is small compared to the depth of the basin. We solve the Green function problem for a matrix-valued DtN operator, at the bottom and the free-surface.

The magnetic-field-dependent spin ordering of strained BiFeO3 films is determined using nuclear resonant scattering and Raman spectroscopy. When a Josephson junction array is built with hybrid superconductor/metal/superconductor junctions, a quantum phase transition from a superconducting to a two-dimensional (2D) metallic ground state is predicted to happen upon increasing the junction normal state resistance. Owing to its surface-exposed 2D electron gas and its gate-tunable charge carrier density, graphene coupled to superconductors is the ideal platform to study the above-mentioned transition between ground states. Here we show that decorating graphene with a sparse and regular array of superconducting nanodisks enables to continuously gate-tune the quantum superconductor-to-metal transition of the Josephson junction array into a zero-temperature metallic state. The suppression of proximity-induced superconductivity is a direct consequence of the emergence of quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase of the disks. Under perpendicular magnetic field, the competition between quantum fluctuations and disorder is responsible for the resilience at the lowest temperatures of a superconducting glassy state that persists above the upper critical field. Our results provide the entire phase diagram of the disorder and magnetic field-tuned transition and unveil the fundamental impact of quantum phase fluctuations in 2D superconducting systems., 25 pages, 6 figures

International audience; We provide a classification of the possible flow of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates evolving from initially discontinuous profiles. We consider the situation where the dynamics can be reduced to the consideration of a single polarization mode (also denoted as "magnetic excitation") obeying a system of equations equivalent to the Landau-Lifshitz equation for an easy-plane ferro-magnet. We present the full set of one-phase periodic solutions. The corresponding Whitham modulation equations are obtained together with formulas connecting their solutions with the Riemann invariants of the modulation equations. The problem is not genuinely nonlinear, and this results in a non-single-valued mapping of the solutions of the Whitham equations with physical wave patterns as well as to the appearance of new elements --- contact dispersive shock waves --- that are absent in more standard, genuinely nonlinear situations. Our analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

PageRank has numerous applications in information retrieval, reputation systems, machine learning, and graph partitioning. In this paper, we study PageRank in undirected random graphs with an expansion property. The Chung-Lu random graph is an example of such a graph. We show that in the limit, as the size of the graph goes to infinity, PageR- ank can be approximated by a mixture of the restart distribution and the vertex degree distribution. We report on combined measurements of heat and charge transport through a single-electron transistor. The device acts as a heat switch actuated by the voltage applied on the gate. The Wiedemann-Franz law for the ratio of heat and charge conductances is found to be systematically violated away from the charge degeneracy points. The observed deviation agrees well with the theoretical expectation. With large temperature drop between the source and drain, the heat current away from degeneracy deviates from the standard quadratic dependence in the two temperatures., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + supplementary material

We discuss the Schwinger pair creation process for the system of massless Dirac fermions in the presence of constant external magnetic and electric fields. The pair production rate remains finite unlike the vacuum decay rate. In the recently discovered Dirac semimetals, where the massless Dirac fermions emerge, this pair production may be observed experimentally through the transport properties. Magnetic field can penetrate into type II superconductors in the form of Abrikosov vortices, which are magnetic flux tubes surrounded by circulating supercurrents often trapped at defects referred to as pinning sites. Although the average properties of the vortex matter in superconductors can be tuned with magnetic fields, temperature or electric currents, handling of individual Abrikosov vortices remains challenging and has been demonstrated only with sophisticated scanning local probe microscopies. Here we introduce a far-field optical method based on local heating of the superconductor with a focused laser beam to realize a fast and precise manipulation of individual vortices, in the same way as with optical tweezers. This simple approach provides the perfect basis for sculpting the magnetic flux profile in superconducting devices like a vortex lens or a vortex cleaner, without resorting to static pinning or ratchet effects., Manipulation of individual superconducting vortices remains challenging and has been demonstrated only in a sophisticated way. Here, Veshchunov et al. realize a fast and precise manipulation of individual vortices using a far-field optical method, providing a simple way towards optical control of Josephson transport.

Slow oscillations (SlO) of the in-plane magnetoresistance with a frequency less than 4 T are observed in the rare-earth tritellurides and proposed as an effective tool to explore the electronic structure in various strongly anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional compounds. Contrary to the usual Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations, SlO originate not from small Fermi-surface pockets, but from the entanglement of close frequencies due to a finite interlayer transfer integral, either between the two Te planes forming a bilayer or between two adjacent bilayers. From the observed angular dependence of the frequency and the phase of SlO we argue that they originate from the bilayer splitting rather than from the Fermi-surface warping. The SlO frequency gives the value of the interlayer transfer integral $\approx 1$ meV for TbTe$_3$ and GdTe$_3$., 10 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1504.06064

We report a study of the relaxation time of the restoration of the resistive superconducting state in single crystalline boron-doped diamond using amplitude-modulated absorption of (sub-)THz radiation (AMAR). The films grown on an insulating diamond substrate have a low carrier density of about 2.5x10^{21} cm^{-3} and a critical temperature of about 2 K. By changing the modulation frequency we find a high-frequency rolloff which we associate with the characterstic time of energy relaxation between the electron and the phonon systems or the relaxation time for nonequilibrium superconductivity. Our main result is that the electron-phonon scattering time varies clearly as T^{-2}, over the accessible temperature range of 1.7 to 2.2 K. In addition, we find, upon approaching the critical temperature T_c, evidence for an increasing relaxation time on both sides of T_c., 11 pages, 6 figures, 61 references

We develop a semi-quantitative theory of electron pairing and resulting superconductivity in bulk "poor conductors" in which Fermi energy $E_F$ is located in the region of localized states not so far from the Anderson mobility edge $E_c$. We review the existing theories and experimental data and argue that a large class of disordered films is described by this model. Our theoretical analysis is based on the analytical treatment of pairing correlations, described in the basis of the exact single-particle eigenstates of the 3D Anderson model, which we combine with numerical data on eigenfunction correlations. Fractal nature of critical wavefunction's correlations is shown to be crucial for the physics of these systems. We identify three distinct phases: 'critical' superconductive state formed at $E_F=E_c$, superconducting state with a strong pseudogap, realized due to pairing of weakly localized electrons and insulating state realized at $E_F$ still deeper inside localized band. The 'critical' superconducting phase is characterized by the enhancement of the transition temperature with respect to BCS result, by the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of superconductive order parameter and local density of states. The major new feature of the pseudo-gaped state is the presence of two independent energy scales: superconducting gap $\Delta$, that is due to many-body correlations and a new "pseudogap" energy scale $\Delta_P$ which characterizes typical binding energy of localized electron pairs and leads to the insulating behavior of the resistivity as a function of temperature above superconductive $T_c$. Two gap nature of the "pseudo-gaped superconductor" is shown to lead to a number of unusual physical properties., Comment: 110 pages, 39 figures. Recent experimental progress in manipulation with high-dimensional quantum systems opens a new framework for implementation of teleportation protocols. We show that the one-qubit teleportation can be considered as a state transfer between subspaces of the whole Hilbert space of an indivisible eight-dimensional system. We present the Usadel theory describing the superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with a half-metallic layer. It is shown that the full spin polarization inside the half-metals gives rise to the giant triplet spin-valve effect in superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) - half-metal (HM) trilayers as well as to the $\varphi_0$-junction formation in the S/F/HM/F/S systems. In addition, we consider the exactly solvable model of the S/F/HM trilayers of atomic thickness and demonstrate that it reproduces the main features of the spin-valve effect found within the Usadel approach. Our results are shown to be in a qualitative agreement with the recent experimental data on the spin-valve effect in ${\rm MoGe/Cu/Ni/CrO_2}$ hybrids [A. Singh et al., Phys. Rev. We have performed first-principles evolutionary searches for all stable titanium nitrides and have found, in addition to the well-known rocksalt-type TiN, new ground states Ti$_3$N$_2$, Ti$_4$N$_3$, Ti$_6$N$_5$ at atmospheric pressure, and Ti$_2$N and TiN$_2$ at higher pressures. The latest nitrogen-rich structure presents encapsulated N$_2$ dumbbells with a N-N distance of 1.348 {\AA} at 60 GPa and TiN$_2$ is predicted to be mechanically stable (quenchable). Our calculations of the mechanical properties (bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and hardness) are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data and show that the hardness of titanium nitrides increases with increasing nitrogen content. The hardness of titanium nitrides is enhanced by strengthening directional covalent bonds and disappearance of Ti-Ti metallic bonds. Among the predicted compounds, TiN$_2$ has the highest hardness of 27.2 GPa., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

International audience; We consider the space-time evolution of initial discontinuities of depth and flow velocity for an integrable version of the shallow water Boussinesq system introduced by Kaup. We focus on a specific version of this "Kaup-Boussinesq model" for which a flat water surface is modulationally stable, we speak below of "positive dispersion" model. This model also appears as an approximation to the equations governing the dynamics of polarisation waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We describe its periodic solutions and the corresponding Whitham modulation equations. The self-similar, one-phase wave structures are composed of different building blocks which are studied in detail. This makes it possible to establish a classification of all the possible wave configurations evolving from initial discontinuities. The analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

We consider the relation between three physical problems: 2D directed lattice random walks, ensembles of $T_{n,n+1}$ torus knots, and instanton ensembles in 5D SQED with one compact dimension in $\Omega$ background and with 5D Chern-Simons term at the level one. All these ensembles exhibit the critical behavior typical for the "area+length+corners" statistics of grand ensembles of 2D directed paths. Using the combinatorial description, we obtain an explicit expression of the generating function for $q$-Narayana numbers which amounts to the new critical behavior in the ensemble of $T_{n,n+1}$ torus knots and in the ensemble of instantons in 5D SQED. Depending on the number of the nontrivial fugacities, we get either the critical point, or cascade of critical lines and critical surfaces. In the 5D gauge theory the phase transition is of the 3rd order, while in the ensemble of paths and ensemble of knots it is typically of the 1st order. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the proximity effect in an atomic-scale controlled junction between two different superconductors. Elaborated on a Si(111) surface, the junction comprises a Pb nanocrystal with an energy gap of 1.2 meV, connected to a crystalline atomic monolayer of lead with a gap of 0.23 meV. Using in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy we probe the local density of states of this hybrid system both in space and in energy, at temperatures below and above the critical temperature of the superconducting monolayer. Direct and inverse proximity effects are revealed with high resolution. Our observations are precisely explained with the help of a self-consistent solution of the Usadel equations. In particular, our results demonstrate that in the vicinity of the Pb islands, the Pb monolayer locally develops a finite proximity-induced superconducting order parameter, well above its own bulk critical temperature. This leads to a giant proximity effect where the superconducting correlations penetrate inside the monolayer a distance much larger than in a non-superconducting metal., 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review X

Using first-principles variable-composition evolutionary methodology, we explored the high-pressure structures of beryllium hydrides between 0 and 400 GPa. We found that BeH2 remains the only stable compound in this pressure range. The pressure-induced transformations are predicted as I b a m → P 3 ̄ m 1 → R 3 ̄ m → C m c m → P 4 / n m m , which occur at 24, 139, 204 and 349 GPa, respectively. P 3 ̄ m 1 and R 3 ̄ m structures are layered polytypes based on close packings of H atoms with Be atoms filling all octahedral voids in alternating layers. Cmcm and P4/nmm contain two-dimensional triangular networks with each layer forming a kinked slab in the ab-plane. P 3 ̄ m 1 and R 3 ̄ m are semiconductors while Cmcm and P4/nmm are metallic. We have explored superconductivity of both metal phases, and found large electron-phonon coupling parameters of λ = 0.63 for Cmcm with a Tc of 32.1-44.1 K at 250 GPa and λ = 0.65 for P4/nmm with a Tc of 46.1-62.4 K at 400 GPa. The dependence of Tc on pressure indicates that Tc initially increases to a maximum of 45.1 K for Cmcm at 275 GPa and 97.0 K for P4/nmm at 365 GPa, and then decreases with increasing pressure for both phases.

We consider the scenario, in which the light Higgs scalar boson appears as the Pseudo - Goldstone boson. We discuss examples both in condensed matter and in relativistic field theory. In $^3$He-B the symmetry breaking gives rise to 4 Nambu-Goldstone modes and 14 Higgs modes. At lower energy one of the four NG modes becomes the Higgs boson with small mass. This is the mode measured in experiments with the longitudinal NMR, and the Higgs mass corresponds to the Leggett frequency $M_{\rm H}=\hbar \Omega_L$. The formation of the Higgs mass is the result of the violation of the hidden spin-orbit symmetry at low energy. In this scenario the symmetry breaking energy scale $\Delta$ (the gap in the fermionic spectrum) and the Higgs mass scale $M_{\rm H}$ are highly separated: $M_{\rm H}\ll \Delta$. On the particle physics side we consider the model inspired by the models of \cite{dobrescu,Yamawaki}. At high energies the $SU(3)$ symmetry is assumed that relates the left - handed top and bottom quarks to the additional fermion $\chi_L$. This symmetry is softly broken at low energies. As a result the only CP - even Goldstone boson acquires a mass and may be considered as the candidate for the role of the $125$ GeV scalar boson. We consider the condensation pattern different from the one typical for the top - seesaw models, where the condensate $< \bar{t}_L\chi_R >$ is off - diagonal. In our case the condensates are mostly diagonal. Unlike \cite{dobrescu,Yamawaki} the explicit mass terms are absent and the soft breaking of $SU(3)$ symmetry is given solely by the four - fermion terms. This reveals the complete analogy with $^3$He, where there is no explicit mass term and the spin - orbit interaction has the form of the four - fermion interaction., Comment: Latex, 33 pages

We study the planar matching problem, defined by a symmetric random matrix with independent identically distributed entries, taking values 0 and 1. We show that the existence of a perfect planar matching structure is possible only above a certain critical density, $p_{c}$, of allowed contacts (i.e. of '1'). Using a formulation of the problem in terms of Dyck paths and a matrix model of planar contact structures, we provide an analytical estimation for the value of the transition point, $p_{c}$, in the thermodynamic limit. This estimation is close to the critical value, $p_{c} \approx 0.379$, obtained in numerical simulations based on an exact dynamical programming algorithm. We characterize the corresponding critical behavior of the model and discuss the relation of the perfect-imperfect matching transition to the known molten-glass transition in the context of random RNA secondary structure's formation. In particular, we provide strong evidence supporting the conjecture that the molten-glass transition at T=0 occurs at $p_{c}$., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures (we have added the new fig.4)

We consider random non-directed networks subject to dynamics conserving vertex degrees and study analytically and numerically equilibrium three-vertex motif distributions in the presence of an external field, $h$, coupled to one of the motifs. For small $h$ the numerics is well described by the "chemical kinetics" for the concentrations of motifs based on the law of mass action. For larger $h$ a transition into some trapped motif state occurs in Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi networks. We explain the existence of the transition by employing the notion of the entropy of the motif distribution and describe it in terms of a phenomenological Landau-type theory with a non-zero cubic term. A localization transition should always occur if the entropy function is non-convex. We conjecture that this phenomenon is the origin of the motifs' pattern formation in real evolutionary networks., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, the paper is substantially reworked

Recently it was discovered that the non-uniform Meissner current flowing around the pinning sites in the type-II superconductor induces the unconventional vortex-antivortex pairs with the non-quantized magnetic flux [J.-Y. Ge, et al., Nat. Commun. 6, 6573 (2015)]. Here we provide the theory of this phenomenon showing that the vortex-like structures originate from the perturbation of the current streamlines by the non-superconducting defect, which results in the generation of the localized magnetic field. The position and the shape of such vortex dipoles are shown to be very sensitive to the defect form. Thus, applying the external magnetic field or current to the superconductor and using, e.g., the high-resolution scanning Hall microscope to measure the stray magnetic field one can plot the map containing the information about the position of the defects and their shape., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Context. The origin of coronal type-II radio bursts and of their band-splitting are still not fully understood. Aims. To make progress in solving this problem on the basis of one extremely well observed solar eruptive event. Methods. The relative dynamics of multi-thermal eruptive plasmas, observed in detail by the SDO/AIA and of the harmonic type-II burst sources, observed by the NRH at ten frequencies from 445 to 151 MHz, is studied for the partially behind the limb event on 3 November 2010. Special attention is given to the band-splitting of the burst. Analysis is supplemented by investigation of coronal hard X-ray (HXR) sources observed by the RHESSI. Results. It is found that the flare impulsive phase was accompanied by the formation of a double coronal HXR source, whose upper part coincided with the hot (T~10 MK) eruptive plasma blob. The leading edge (LE) of the eruptive plasmas (T~1-2 MK) moved upward from the flare region with the speed of v=900-1400 km/s. The type II burst source initially appeared just above the LE apex and moved with the same speed and in the same direction. After about 20 s it started to move about twice faster, but still in the same direction. At any given moment the low frequency component (LFC) source of the splitted type-II burst was situated above the high frequency component (HFC) source, which in turn was situated above the LE. It is also found that at a given frequency the HFC source was located slightly closer to the photosphere than the LFC source. Conclusions. The shock wave, which could be responsible for the observed type-II radio burst, was initially driven by the multi-temperature eruptive plasmas, but later transformed to a freely propagating blast shock wave. The most preferable interpretation of the type-II burst splitting is that its LFC was emitted from the upstream region of the shock, whereas the HFC - from the downstream region., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We propose a new single-step scheme for the generation of a GHZ entangled state of three single-electron excitations (flying qubits). We also present a method to get a generalized GHZ-state. Our idea relies upon the most recent progress in the field of on-demand electron sources and mesoscopic Mach-Zehnder interferometry. We also provide the recipe for the unambiguous detection of this GHZ state via correlations measurements at the output, which imply the violation of a Bell-type inequality which is generalized to the case of three particles. We explain how such measurements can be achieved in the context of Mach-Zehnder interferometry, and draw an actual prototype device which could be achieved with point contacts and metallic gates placed on a GaAs sample, in the integer quantum Hall effect regime., 13 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we study the correspondence between the $\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k}\oplus \hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{p}/\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k+p}$ coset conformal field theories and $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(n) gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. Namely we check the correspondence between the SU(2) Nekrasov partition function on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ and the conformal blocks of the $S_{3}$ parafermion algebra (in $S$ and $D$ modules). We find that they are equal up to the U(1)-factor as it was in all cases of AGT-like relations. Studying the structure of the instanton partition function on $\mathbb{R}^4/\mathbb{Z}_p$ we also find some evidence that this correspondence with arbitrary $p$ takes place up to the U(1)-factor., 21 pages, 6 figures, misprints corrected, references added, version to appear in JHEP

We study the fraction $f$ of nucleotides involved in the formation of a cactus--like secondary structure of random heteropolymer RNA--like molecules. In the low--temperature limit we study this fraction as a function of the number $c$ of different nucleotide species. We show, that with changing $c$, the secondary structures of random RNAs undergo a morphological transition: $f(c)\to 1$ for $c \le c_{\rm cr}$ as the chain length $n$ goes to infinity, signaling the formation of a virtually "perfect" gapless secondary structure; while $f(c)c_{\rm cr}$, what means that a non-perfect structure with gaps is formed. The strict upper and lower bounds $2 \le c_{\rm cr} \le 4$ are proven, and the numerical evidence for $c_{\rm cr}$ is presented. The origin of continuous energy spectra in large disordered interacting quantum systems is one of the key unsolved problems in quantum physics. While small quantum systems with discrete energy levels are noiseless and stay coherent forever in the absence of any coupling to external world, most large-scale quantum systems are able to produce thermal bath and excitation decay. This intrinsic decoherence is manifested by a broadening of energy levels which aquire a finite width. The important question is what is the driving force and the mechanism of transition(s) between two different types of many-body systems - with and without intrinsic decoherence? Here we address this question via the numerical study of energy level statistics of a system of spins-1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions and random transverse fields. Our results present the first evidence for a well-defined quantum phase transition between domains of discrete and continous many-body spectra in a class of random spin models. Because this model also describes the physics of the superconductor-insulator transition in disordered superconductors like InO and similar materials, our results imply the appearance of novel insulating phases in the vicinity of this transition., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, original version of the paper accepted for publication (in slightly revised form) in Nature Communications

The most profound effect of disorder on electronic systems is the localization of the electrons transforming an otherwise metallic system into an insulator. If the metal is also a superconductor then, at low temperatures, disorder can induce a dramatic transition from a superconducting into an insulating state. An outstanding question is whether the route to insulating behavior proceeds via the direct localization of Cooper pairs or, alternatively, by a two-step process in which the Cooper pairing is first destroyed followed by the standard localization of single electrons. Here we address this question by studying the local superconducting gap of a highly disordered, amorphous, superconductor by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal that, in the vicinity of the superconductor-insulator transition, the coherence peaks in the one-particle density of states disappear while the superconducting gap remains intact indicating the presence of localized Cooper pairs. Our results provide the first direct evidence that the transition in our system is driven by Cooper pair localization., 8 pages, 5 figures

We develop an analytical theory for generic disorder-driven quantum phase transitions. We apply this formalism to the superconductor-insulator transition and we briefly discuss the applications to the order-disorder transition in quantum magnets. The effective spin-1/2 models for these transitions are solved in the cavity approximation which becomes exact on a Bethe lattice with large branching number K >> 1 and weak dimensionless coupling g << 1. The characteristic features of the low temperature phase is a large self-formed inhomogeneity of the order-parameter distribution near the critical point K_{c}(g) where the critical temperature T_{c} of the ordering transition vanishes. Near the quantum critical point, the typical value of the order parameter vanishes exponentially, B_{0}\propto e^{-C/(K-K_{c}(g))}. In the disordered regime, realized at K\omega_{d} the level acquire a non-zero width which is self-generated by the many-body interactions. In this phase the spin model provides by itself an intrinsic thermal bath. Another phase is obtained at smaller K, Comment: 59 pages, 11 figures

On a basis of a two-length scale description of hydrophobic interactions we develop a continuous self-consistent theory of solute-water interactions which allows to determine a hydrophobic layer of a solute molecules of any geometry with explicit account of solvent structure described by its correlation function. We compute the mean solvent density profile n(r) surrounding the spherical solute molecule as well as its solvation free energy. We compare the two-length scale theory to the numerical data of Monte-Carlo simulations found in the literature and discuss the possibility of a self-consistent adjustment of the free parameters of the theory. In the frameworks of the discussed approach we compute also the solvation free energies of alkane molecules and the free energy of interaction of two spheres separated by some distance. We describe the general setting of a self-consistent account of electrostatic interactions in the frameworks of the model where the water is considered not as a continuous media, but as a gas of dipoles. Quasi-hydrostatic compression of rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) has been studied up to 50 GPa at room temperature using diamond-anvil cells and angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A fit of the experimental P–V data to the Vinet equation of state yields the bulk modulus B0 of 42.2(1.4) GPa and its first pressure derivative B0′ of 7.6(2) that are in excellent agreement with our ab initio calculations. Formation of a new high-pressure phase of boron monosulfide (hp-BS) has been observed above 35 GPa. According to ab initio evolutionary crystal structure predictions combined with Rietveld refinement of high-pressure X-ray diffraction data, the structure of hp-BS has trigonal symmetry and belongs to the space group P-3m1.
