This article focuses on the 1.5 generation immigrants in Spain, i.e. those who arrived at age 12 or earlier. Using data from the Spanish Labor Force Survey (LFS), we analyze the probability of being unemployed during the economic recession period. Results suggest that the 1.5 generation has a higher risk of being unemployed, although this risk decreases when accounting for sociodemographic characteristics. As time in the labor market increases, 1.5 generation immigrants manage to reverse their initial disadvantage with respect to the first generation, and close the gap with natives. Results indicate that, compared to first generation immigrants, the 1.5 generation group requires more time to find a job, although they compensate for this initial employment disadvantage by securing better positions. Thus, unlike the first generation immigrants, they have greater returns to years in the labor market, which also result in higher employment protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines whether the likelihood of job loss varies by immigrant status and economic periods. In addition, it asks how the immigrant-native differences in job loss change under volatile economic conditions in the highly segmented Spanish labour market. Our study takes advantage of the current economic crisis to test several hypotheses that draw upon detailed longitudinal data from a sample of working males aged 16-64 years from the Spanish Labour Force Survey over the period 2005-2010. A series of random-effect logistic models and decomposition models reveal three central findings. First, we find that compositional differences in structural factors like occupational level and temporary employment contracts account for the major part of the difference in the job loss between immigrants and natives. Secondly, we find that during the Great Recession the likelihood of job loss is disproportionally higher among immigrants than natives. Thirdly, we find a significant increase in the unexplained portion of job loss contingent upon workers' ethnicity. Our results implicate that group differences in employment during economic downturns are more likely related to employers' firing practices that vary strongly with the economic context. This article studies the beneficial return from potential work experience in preventing job loss, and seeks to explain whether its capacity for protection is different for immigrants compared with native workers. Logistic regression models are calculated from panel data of the Spanish Labour Force Survey between 2008 and 2010. Results indicate that for some foreign-born groups, the inequality with respect to natives grows over time. Whereas for Spaniards, increased years in the labour market reduce the risk of becoming unemployed, Africans, Latin Americans, and Eastern Europeans with more time in the labour market experience hardly any advantage when compared with their fellow immigrants. Although the ethnic penalty is slightly reduced after taking into account socio-demographic differences, the lower return is mainly explained by employment factors. Foreign-born workers are permanently over-represented in low-skilled and non-standard jobs where potential work experience does not result in more protection. The access through the bottom of a segmented labour market has prevented immigrants becoming upwardly mobile to more stable occupations. In order to do this, survival analysis models were calculated using data from the Spanish Labour Force Survey between 2005 and 2010. The results show, on the one hand, an increase in the probability of emigrating from the start of the recession; and on the other hand, that the probability of emigrating is higher among immigrants with worse employment outcomes and a poorer educational background, as suggested by Neo-classical Economics. However, the effect of unemployment and of the deficit in human capital has been decreasing since 2008.
