In engineering practice, failures due to fatigue cracks in metallic structures have always been difficult to predict. In our study, nonlinear Lamb wave-mixing was applied in the detection of micro-cracks in plates. The analysis of the nonlinear interaction of these waves with cracks of various lengths and widths was performed using finite-element simulations. The simulation results showed that the sideband at the sum frequency provide a sensitive means for micro-crack detection. Moreover, the sideband amplitudes show a monotonic increase with micro-crack length, but a decrease with micro-crack width. Experiments using Lamb wave-mixing were conducted on plates with fatigue cracks. The experimental results show that a proposed acoustic nonlinearity parameter related to the sideband at the sum frequency is sensitive to micro-cracks in plate, and is well correlated with the damage degree. Antisymmetric and symmetric Lamb-type feature guided waves (FGW) have recently been shown to exist in small angle plate bends. This paper reports Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) method simulations revealing the existence of a new family of Shear Horizontal ( SH B ) type of FGW mode in 90° bends in plate structures. Mode shapes and velocity dispersion curves are extracted, demonstrating the SH -like nature of a bend-confined mode identified in studies of power flow across the bend. The SH B mode is shown to have reduced attenuation in the higher frequency range, making it an ideal choice for high-resolution inspection of such bends. Further modal studies examine the physical basis for mode confinement, and argue that this is strongly related to FGW phenomena reported earlier, and also linked to the curvature at the bend region. Wedge acoustic waves discussed widely in literature are shown as arising from surface-limiting of the SH B mode at higher frequencies. Air-coupled ultrasonic inspection using leaky Lamb waves offers attractive possibilities for non-contact testing of plate materials and structures. A common method uses an air-coupled pitch–catch configuration, which comprises a transmitter and a receiver positioned at oblique angles to a thin plate. It is well known that the angle of incidence of the ultrasonic bulk wave in the air can be used to preferentially generate specific Lamb wave modes in the plate in a non-contact manner, depending on the plate dimensions and material properties. Multiple reflections of the ultrasonic waves in the air gap between the transmitter and the plate can produce additional delayed waves entering the plate at angles of incidence that are different to those of the original bulk wave source. Similarly, multiple reflections of the leaky Lamb waves in the air gap between the plate and an inclined receiver may then have different angles of incidence and propagation delays when arriving at the receiver and hence the signal analysis may become complex, potentially leading to confusion in the identification of the wave modes. To obtain a better understanding of the generation, propagation and detection of leaky Lamb waves and the effects of reflected waves within the air gaps, a multiphysics model using finite element methods was established. This model facilitated the visualisation of the propagation of the reflected waves between the transducers and the plate, the subsequent generation of additional Lamb wave signals within the plate itself, their leakage into the adjacent air, and the reflections of the leaky waves in the air gap between the plate and receiver. Multiple simulations were performed to evaluate the propagation and reflection of signals produced at different transducer incidence angles. Experimental measurements in air were in good agreement with simulation, which verified that the multiphysics model can provide a convenient and accurate way to interpret the signals in air-coupled ultrasonic inspection using leaky Lamb waves. We previously formulated a semi-analytical finite element technique for Lamb waves in a plate surrounded by fluids and investigated the dispersion curves and wave structures for leaky Lamb waves. Herein, this technique is extended to the calculation of transient responses both in a plate and in fluids for dynamic loading on the plate surface. To gain fundamental insights into guided wave inspection for a water-filled pipe or tank, guided waves generated upon transient loading of a flat plate water-loaded on one side were analyzed. The results show that a quasi-Scholte mode propagating at the plate-water interface is useful for the long-range inspection of a water-loaded plate because of its non-attenuation and minimal dispersion; moreover, this mode has superior generation efficiency in the low-frequency range, while it is localized near the plate-water interface at higher frequencies. This paper theoretically investigates the propagation of Lamb waves in a two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystal (PC) structure composed of multiple square stubs symmetric or anti-symmetric deposited on a thin homogeneous plate. The dispersion relations, the power transmission spectra and the displacement fields of the eigenmodes are studied by using the finite-element method (FEM). We investigate the effect of the distance between adjacent square stubs on the band gaps (BGs). The results show that the distance between adjacent square stubs can remarkably change the location and the width of the BGs. Meanwhile, we conducted a numerically study on the different results between the anti-symmetric and symmetric distribution of the scatterers. The band structure of the anti-symmetric structure PC is significantly different from the symmetric structure. In general, the distribution of the square stubs has an influence on the band structures. We further identify the physical mechanism of the distinction in the formation of the BG between the anti-symmetric and the symmetric model through the displacement fields of the eigenmodes. In addition, we find that the variation of the PC BGs in anti-symmetric and symmetric structure are sensitive to the distance between adjacent square stubs, which could be indispensable to practical applications such as BG tuning. Dispersion of Lamb waves propagating in AlN plates with a periodic Al grating on the top surface and an Al electrode on the bottom surface is investigated using the numerical technique SDA-FEM-SDA, which combines finite element modeling (FEM) analysis of the electrode region with spectral-domain analysis (SDA) of the adjacent multi-layered half-spaces. Characteristics of zero-order and higher-order Lamb waves are presented as functions of plate thickness and spectral frequency, which varies in the first Brillouin zone. The structures of typical Lamb waves are examined via visualization of the instantaneous displacement fields in the AlN plate confined between the grating and the bottom electrode. The mechanism of building hybrid modes, which arise from intermode coupling between the counter-propagating Lamb waves of different symmetry and order, is illustrated by two examples of modes propagating with wavelengths λ = 3p and λ = 4p, where p is the pitch of the grating. Abstract: This paper deals with developing a parametric 2D finite-element technique, which can size strip-like defects in elastic or viscoelastic, isotropic or anisotropic material plates. A pure incident Lamb wave mode is sent towards the defect and reflection and transmission coefficients produced by mode conversion phenomenon are used as input data for the inversion process, which consists in quantifying two unknown parameters representing the geometry of the defect. A finite-element-based model is used to simulate the Lamb wave scattering for various values of the aimed parameters, and specific post-processing based on Shkerdin’s orthogonality relation is applied to predict the needed reflection and transmission coefficients. The target is known reflection and transmission coefficients initially obtained from an experiment, which can be either a numerical experiment for validation purposes, or proper measurements on a sample for NDE application purposes. The inversion process is stopped when the predicted reflection and transmission coefficients fit at best those obtained from initial experiment. In this paper, we have quantified two geometrical parameters for three types of defects in different waveguides: the through-thickness depth (or position) and width (or radius) of (1) a circular hole inside an aluminium plate, (2) a rectangular notch at the surface of a Perspex plate, (3) a cracked zone inside a composite plate, representing an impact damage. Abstract: In this study an inverse procedure based on the propagation of guided ultrasonic waves is proposed for the characterization of the elastic material constants of plates. The procedure consists of an optimization problem in which the discrepancy between the dispersion curves obtained through a semi analytical finite element (SAFE) formulation and numerical or experimental dispersion curves is minimized. The numerical dispersion curves were obtained from the application of the commercial finite element analysis software ANSYS. Finally experimental data were obtained by adopting a hybrid broadband laser/PZT ultrasonic set-up in a pitch-catch configuration. For both numerical and experimental data, the joint time–frequency analysis of the continuous wavelet transform was used. The optimization scheme proposed in this study is based on an improved version of the simplex search method. The scheme inputs an initial guess of the material parameters in the SAFE formulation. The values of these parameters are iteratively updated until the discrepancy between the SAFE-based group velocity dispersion curves and the numerical or experimental curves is minimized. The scheme is designed to minimize the discrepancy associated with the lowest symmetric and anti-symmetric order mode simultaneously. The validity of the SAFE method coupled to the inverse procedure scheme is tested to characterize the elastic material properties of a 2.54mm thick aluminum plate. As the SAFE formulation is valid for waveguides of arbitrary cross-section the paper represents the first step toward the integration of an inversion scheme applicable into the SAFE algorithm to characterize the material properties of waveguides of complex geometries and various boundary conditions. Abstract: In recent years, much attention has been paid to the use of Lamb waves for structural health monitoring. This choice is prompted by the high speed of Lamb wave inspection, although their dispersive nature can complicate the interpretation of results, especially when dealing with closely-spaced reflectors. In this paper, the objective is to improve the time resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of signals obtained from inspection of plates by the S 0 Lamb mode. The signal processing scheme used is based on deconvolution of the measured signal by Wiener filtering, followed by autoregressive spectral extrapolation. The deconvolution technique is applied to signals obtained from finite element models and also to experimentally measured signals; both sets of data are based on plates with various types of notch discontinuities. Using this technique, the separation distance between adjacent notches was estimated with high accuracy in both simulated and experimental ultrasonic signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper reports simulations of the generation of Lamb wave modes in thin plates using a meander coil (meander line) EMAT, which works under the principle of Lorentz force mechanism in non-magnetic materials. The numerical simulations have been compared with measurements. The numerical work presented in this paper is divided into two parts. First, a 2D electromagnetic model is developed for calculating the Lorentz force density, which is the driving force for elastic wave generation within the plate. Second, the calculated force at each point in the metal is used as the driving force for generating elastic wave modes in the plate. These calculated Lamb wave modes are compared with those generated experimentally in a thin plate. Additionally, the measured wave modes are analyzed with the help of dispersion curves and a time–frequency analysis. Our numerical work is also extended to analyze the interaction of Lamb wave modes with defects. The simulations compare favorably with the measurements presented here. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the fundamental Lamb modes interaction with defects in isotropic plates. For these experimental investigations, symmetrical notches with various depths milled in aluminum plates are considered. Moreover, the incident Lamb wave of a specific mode is generated by means of two identical thin piezoceramic transducers placed at the opposite sides of the plate. The waves scattered by the notch are recorded with conventional transducers located on the plate surface in front and behind the defect. The selection of the A 0 or the S 0 modes is obtained by exciting the transducers with anti-phased or in-phased signals, respectively. Furthermore, a calibration process is investigated to correct errors caused by the presence of the receiver between the emitters and the defects. The power reflection and transmission coefficients are then obtained and the power balance is verified. Finally, these measurements are compared successfully with those obtained by a numerical method using the finite-element modeling described in a previous work. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

An inverse analysis based on the artificial neural network technique is introduced for effective identification of crack damage in aluminum plates. The concepts of digital damage fingerprints and damage parameter database, which are prerequisites for neural network developing and training, are presented. Parameterized modeling for finite element analysis and an information mapping approach are applied to constitute the damage parameter database cost-effectively. The generalization performance of the neural network is examined by a process of 'leave-one-out' cross-validation and diverse factors are discussed, based on which the optimization of the neural network architecture is evaluated. The capability of this inverse approach is assessed by two crack cases from experiments, with good accuracy obtained in damage parameters (central position, size, and orientation). A Lamb wave-based technique was developed for detecting damages in metallic structures, such as cracks and holes in metallic beams and plates. For metallic structures with transverse cracks and holes, A0 mode of Lamb waves was employed due to its shorter wave length compared with S0 mode, which leads to high sensitivity to small damages. Two kinds of excitation techniques for generating comparatively pure A0 mode using piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) actuators were realized experimentally. In one technique, two PZT actuators with applied out-of-phase voltages were attached on both sides of the structures. While in the other technique, a kind of grease lubricant was used between the bottom surface of one PZT actuator and the surface of the specimens. Both techniques were able to enhance the component of A0 mode and reduce the component of S0 mode effectively. Secondly, in terms of the arrival time of the A0 wave mode reflected from damages obtained using the wavelet analysis, the positions of damages were identified accurately. The above two techniques were then validated by identifying the transverse cracks and holes in aluminum beams and plates, respectively. Numerical simulations using the finite element method (FEM) for the wave propagation in these structures with damages were carried out. The obtained experimental and numerical results demonstrate that it is possible to identify damage position very accurately by using only sensor data of defective structures without referring benchmark signals (sensor data of intact structures). Two general and flexible numerical techniques based on the finite-element and boundary element methods developed by the authors in a previous paper are applied to study Lamb wave propagation in multilayered plates and Lamb mode conversion at free edges for frequencies beyond the first cutoff frequency. Both techniques are supported by a meshing criterion which guarantees the accuracy of the results when a condition is fulfilled. A finite-element formulation is directly applicable to study Lamb wave propagation and reflection by simple obstacles such as a flat edge. In order to tackle Lamb wave diffraction problems by defects with more complex geometries, a hybrid boundary element–finite-element formulation is used. This technique provides a major improvement with respect to the only previous boundary element application on Lamb waves: the connecting boundary might be placed as close to the reflector as desired, reducing greatly the requirement on mesh size. Two main application problems on practical metallic plates are studied and compared with reported numerical, theoretical, and experimental results: (1) Lamb wave propagation in degraded titanium diffusion bonds, and (2) Lamb mode conversion at inclined or perpendicular free edges of steel plates for frequencies beyond the first cutoff frequency. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America. Reflection of Lamb waves when the fundamental mode A0 is incident at the free end of a plate is studied, in order to identify the extent to which the generation of nonpropagating modes influences the field local to the end of the plate. Semi-analytical predictions, finite element simulations, and experimental measurements are presented for frequencies below the A2 cutoff. First it is shown, for frequencies below the A1 cutoff, that reflection of the A0 mode is accompanied by a delay in phase, and that there is significant additional motion due to nonpropagating modes within about five plate thicknesses of the end. The extend of this additional motion in the vicinity of the end of the plate is demonstrated by subtracting the contribution of the propagating modes from the displacement field. The wave field at frequencies above the A1 cutoff is more complex because the A1 as well as the A0 propagating modes are present at the end of the plate. Nevertheless, it has still been possible, using semi-analytical predictions and finite element simulations, to demonstrate the additional motion due to the nonpropagating modes. Excitation and propagation of Lamb waves by using rectangular and circular piezoelectric transducers surface-bonded to an isotropic plate are investigated in this work. Analytical stain wave solutions are derived for the two transducer shapes, giving the responses of these transducers in Lamb wave fields. The analytical study is supported by a numerical simulation using the finite element method. Symmetric and antisymmetric components in the wave propagation responses are inspected in detail with respect to test parameters such as the transducer geometry, the length and the excitation frequency. By placing only one piezoelectric transducer on the top or the bottom surface of the plate and weakening the strength of one mode while enhancing the strength of the other modes to find the centre frequency, with which the peak wave amplitude ratio between the S0 and A0 modes is maximum, a single mode excitation from the multiple modes of the Lamb waves can be achieved approximately.
