A one-pot synthesis of new 3-benzylphthalide derivatives was developed by using a strategy based on tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE). The reactions in the presence of TDAE of substituted benzyl chlorides with methyl 2-formylbenzoate or of substituted methyl-2-formylbenzoates with 4-nitrobenzyl chloride furnished the corresponding isobenzofuran-1(3 H)-one products in moderate to good yields. We report herein the first synthesis of propargylic alcohols using an organic reducing agent. Diarylbutynol derivatives are formed in moderate to good yields under mild conditions from the reaction of 1-(3-chloroprop-1-ynyl)-4-nitrobenzene with various aromatic aldehydes using tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) as reductant. Abstract: We developed a rapid and green synthesis of various isocyanurates by cyclotrimerization of isocyanates using TDAE (tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene). TDAE displays excellent performance in catalytic quantities, affording the corresponding trimer of isocyanates very rapidly, under air and at room temperature in good to excellent yields.
