The master's seminar "Competencies for Social and Sustainable Engineering Design" at RWTH Aachen University is part of the study programs Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), this course covers, teaches and reflects relevant competencies for socially responsible and sustainable engineering design. Following a research-orientated focus, the following research question was addressed: "Which competencies are considered relevant by future engineers in the context of sustainable and socially responsible engineering design?". The purpose of this paper is to present this approach and, on the basis of the seminar, to explain how relevant competencies for socially responsible and sustainable engineering design can be acquired by engineers. Moreover, the seminar concept is explained and a methodology for teaching the aforementioned topics is described that can also be transferred to other courses. The evaluation of course-specific feedback allows to present both conclusions and corresponding solution approaches, as well as challenges associated with the concept. Results show that engineering students call for competencies which go beyond pure technical knowledge, and, at the same time, determine that these competencies, like social competencies, are missing in their studies. Inequities in opportunities to learn and become in engineering, especially for minoritized youth, are enduring and systemic. How students experience engineering education, through curriculum, pedagogy, and teacher/student interactions, all shape opportunities for identity development. In this paper we draw upon cultural studies and critical ethnography to explore how and why students engage in engineering for sustainable communities and its relationship to their identity work. We ground our work in a justice-centered asset-based stance that centers how people's lived lives and community wisdom yield powerful forms of cultural knowledge/practice relevant to learning and engaging in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We seek to accentuate students' ingenuity to leverage their assets for social change making; that is, in transformative and future-oriented ways. We view youths' everyday ingenuity as powerful assets for learning and participating in authentic engineering design for sustainable communities. Findings suggest that engineering for sustainable communities created opportunities for productive identity work because it created space for youth to authentically engage in engineering design in ways that allowed them to care about each other, their classroom and community, and to use both their everyday ingenuity and technical expertise to make a difference. We also suggest that students' identity work took shape through the emergence of new local contentious practices of engineering for sustainable communities that both amplified youths' ingenuity and challenged particular local, historical/sociocultural norms of engineering and schooling. These contentious local practices related to disrupting the authority to name what counts as engineering problems worth solving and disrupting narratives around what it means to persist through iterations in design. We suggest that an engineering for sustainable communities approach supports the production of local and productive contentious practice because it centers community co-ownership in the design, and supports students in leveraging their everyday ingenuity as critical knowhow in engineering design. Contribution: An analysis of the extent to which sustainability is present in the syllabi, project briefs, report templates, and student final reports of the three Iberian European project semester (EPS) providers, over a five-year period. Background: EPS is a one-semester capstone project framework that adopts project-based learning and multicultural, multidisciplinary teamwork. Educating engineers for sustainable development requires fostering critical and ethical thinking and a desire for equity, solidarity and preservation of natural resources, and cultural and genetic diversity. Existing engineering capstone design programs emphasize solving real world problems, hands-on training, and soft skills, but few focus on sustainability aspects of engineering design. The three Iberian EPS providers adopt project-based learning and teamwork methodologies, promoting the development of transversal skills and addressing sustainability in a multicultural and multidisciplinary background. Intended Outcomes: To show that the three Iberian EPS providers follow these recommendations and contribute to raising students’ awareness of sustainable development. Application Design: The proposed sustainability learning assessment method collects evidence from syllabi, project briefs, report templates, and final reports to extract faculty and student perspectives. The sustainability-related terms collected were processed into word cloud format, allowing a simple and intuitive interpretation of students’ understanding of sustainability, and in co-occurrence network format, to understand if sustainability has a pervasive or confined presence within the reports. Findings: Iberian EPS faculty and students are aware of the social, economic, and environmental impact of their projects, in terms of quality of life, social responsibility, the use of resources, and environmentally friendly technology. Capstone engineering design projects are ideal for broad application of engineering concepts on open-ended research and design problems. These projects allow students to reinforce their skills and extend their expertise into specialized areas of interest. Often, the capstone projects serve as both test grounds and launch pads for students' engineering careers. Within the engineering curriculum, these projects typically span the final year of an engineering program and entail a single project within a single disciplinary area. While their significance to the educational experience is unequivocal, the benefits of a capstone project can be expanded to further reflect real-world experiences. Over the span of their careers, professional engineers work on a number of projects and assume a variety of roles within a team of engineers with a range of expertise. How do we model that experience for our students within engineering education? Rowan University's Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering adopted the Engineering Clinic Model (ECM) to replace capstone projects. With ECM students choose to work across traditional disciplinary boundaries on multiple projects over their junior and senior years. The Junior and Senior Engineering Clinics allow students to work on potentially four distinct projects with both juniors and seniors from any engineering discipline supervised by a faculty. The student teams focus on tangible objectives and present their outcomes for each term before moving to another team. The ECM has demonstrated tremendous resilience against enrollment growth and continues to be the most notable aspect of Rowan Engineering. Its resilience can be attributed to an automated process that prioritizes student preferences and faculty interests. The process begins with faculty from every engineering discipline pitching their projects at the start of the term. Students subsequently rank their preferences for those projects. A custom-developed Clinic Match algorithm assigns students to their projects based on a set criteria. The greatest benefit of this approach has been for the students to build desired competencies in a wide range of fields, regardless of the discipline. For the Spring 2019 semester, over 150 distinct projects, representing 5 engineering disciplines, were pitched to over 500 junior and senior engineering students. Students worked in teams typically ranging from 3-8 members on projects; often funded by the government and industry. This paper highlights the key features of engineering clinics within junior and senior years and supports the outcomes with quantitative trends gathered over the past 10 semesters. Activity-based teaching-learning describes the range of pedagogical approaches that involve learning by doing hands-on experiments or activities. It encourages students to actively participate in the teaching-learning process through problem-solving or hands-on activities, also the group based activity instructions help students to develop soft skills. The engineering exploration course is an innovative course offered to the first-year curriculum in order to transfer the student's ideas into real-life products through a number of activities such as problem-solving, engineering design process, multi-disciplinary engineering skills, project planning, communication, teamwork, ethics, and sustainability. The course includes multidisciplinary modules that fulfill the requirement of the product development process and each module is designed to teach through activity-based instructions. The aim of the engineering exploration course implementation is to develop multi-disciplinary product development skills in engineering students in the first year. All the sessions of the course delivery were well planned by considering the need statements of each project group so that students can acquire the necessary skills during activity sessions and apply those during product development. The student groups are formed heterogeneously with a maximum of four students in each group. The activity kit was designed for each session by considering team size so that all team members take active participation during various activities and develop their technical as well as soft skills. The initial result of implementation shows that students have developed excellent multidisciplinary products in the group and acquired technical knowledge as well as soft skills. The responses of the students show that 68% of the students rated this activity 10 out of 10, and also gave some suggestions for improvement as it is implemented first time. The students were very positive about this initiative and involved in each activity during the product development process. The Framework for K‐12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards propose that students learn core ideas and practices related to engineering as well as science. To do so, students will need high‐quality curricular materials designed to meet these goals. We report an efficacy study of an elementary engineering curriculum, Engineering is Elementary (EiE) that includes a set of hypothesized critical components designed to encourage student engagement in practices, connect engineering and science learning, and reach diverse students. To measure the impact of the curriculum, we conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial in 604 classrooms in 152 schools in three states. Schools were randomly assigned to either the treatment curriculum or to a comparison curriculum that addressed the same learning goals but did not include several critical components. Results show that students who used the treatment curriculum (EiE) regardless of demographic characteristics outperformed students in the comparison group on outcome measures of both engineering and science content learning. The Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate framework was initiated around 20 years ago at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in order to reform engineering education to cope with the latest needs and challenges available in the industry. MIT researchers thought of the set of skills that graduates would need to have upon graduation. Then they developed the framework and syllabus, and then ran it through pilot programmes to monitor and refine its underlying approaches. The framework takes into account students' 'Technical Knowledge and Reasoning', 'Personal and Professional Skills', 'Interpersonal Skills' and ability to 'Conceive-Design-Implement and Operate' engineering system or processes. It is now well established with over 100 universities applying its concepts to enhance engineering education. The framework defines 12 standards, which are implemented to describe the frameworks structure. This framework has been applied to several modules (or courses) within Taylor's School of Engineering. In particular, the present investigation discusses the application of this framework within the context of a Capstone Project module in the school's Mechanical Engineering Programme. This module is a yearlong, 3rd year module within a 4-year engineering degree programme where students are tasked to design and build a complex engineering system. This paper discusses how the framework is used to enhance students' ability to brainstorm and develop suitable and sustainable engineering design solutions for a specified design challenge. The paper will discuss what the students have accomplished in each part of the conceive-design-implement-operate framework stages, as well as how these techniques have enabled them to appropriately design an engineering solution in addition to the rubrics used to assess them in each part of the framework. Background: The engineering education discourse increasingly recognizes the role of empathy in preparing students for 21st century challenges. This pedagogical and theoretical interest is not supported by an empirical understanding of the role empathy plays in students' professional formation. Purpose This study investigated how undergraduate engineering students made sense of empathy during a series of empathic communication modules as part of a mechanical engineering design course. Methodology: Post‐module reflections from 146 students were collected in two iterations of the course. The data were qualitatively analyzed using social phenomenology to focus on participants' meaning making in the context of their overall experiences. A model of empathy as interrelated skills, orientations, and ways of being theoretically framed the data gathering and analysis. Findings Three analytic categories structured the significant variation in students' meaning making. (a) Relationships with Others captured students' understandings of the relationship with and role of others along the three dimensions of Distance, Difference, and Power. (b) The Act of Learning identified varying degrees of resonance or disconnect between students' expectations of engineering learning and the forms of learning encountered in the modules. (c) Empathy as a Conceptual Object described the variation of students' own understandings of the nature and function of empathy in the context of their engineering learning. Conclusions: The experiential significance of engaging with empathy makes visible and pedagogically accessible students' value orientations that frame their relationships toward others and their self‐understanding as engineers, thus providing potential new avenues for research and education to engage less tangible facets of engineering formation. The lack of diversity in engineering and perpetuation of inequities through engineering designs have motivated the rise of new curricula centred on the integration of traditional technical content with social aspects of technology. However, the 'revolutionizing' of curricula has primarily been spearheaded by junior faculty, women and faculty of colour. This article uses an autoethnographic approach to explore the development of social justice-oriented curricula within engineering from the perspectives of junior women and faculty of colour. Drawing on feminist and critical race theory, we discuss how power dynamics within the school, university and engineering more broadly have shaped the development and teaching of justice-oriented engineering. Through the lens of our experiences, we show that, despite the support from some institutional allies and administrators, stereotypes, hegemonic norms and microaggressions can undermine efforts for social and structural change in engineering education, even as such changes are supported and promoted by the institution. The development of the curriculum for engineering education (course requirements as well as extra-curricular activities like study abroad and internships) should be based on a comprehensive understanding of engineers' responsibilities. The responsibilities that are constitutive of being an engineer include striving to fulfill the standards of excellence set by technical codes; to improve the idealized models that engineers use to predict, for example, the behavior of alternative designs; and to achieve the internal goods such as safety and sustainability as they are reflected in the design codes. Globalization has implications for these responsibilities and, in turn, for engineering education, by, for example, modifying the collection of possible solutions recognized for existing problems. Background: Mixed methods research designs in engineering education often frame the "mixed" aspect of the design from the perspective of data collection. However, intentional mixing throughout the research design—particularly during data analysis—may enable richer meta‐inferences about a phenomenon. Purpose: This paper provides examples of strategies for mixing during data analysis in mixed methods program evaluation in engineering education. Although the context is program evaluation, the procedures are applicable in engineering education research more broadly. Scope/Method: This review presents examples of mixed methods analysis strategies in the context of a data set with qualitative and quantitative data from a global engineering program at a large Mid‐Atlantic university. The structure of the examples presents mixed research questions, pragmatic purposes for such studies, and examples of different mixing strategies for the analysis stage. The mixing strategies highlighted include extreme case sampling, converting, creating a blended variable, blending variables and themes across strands, and cross‐case comparison. Conclusions: This review of mixed methods in program evaluation prompted a reflection of processes in the design of studies, how the designs are described beyond the usual taxonomies in the mixed methods literature, and implications for the greater community of engineering education researchers. Within the technology education classroom, engineering design has been targeted as key to improving learning, enhancing interest in STEM careers, and positively impacting students. The purpose of this research review was to determine whether the research evidence bears these claims. Four scholarly journals that focus on technology and engineering education research were reviewed resulting in the identification of 25 empirical research studies from the past decade. Across all of the studies, data had been collected from a total of 6,397 technology and engineering education students to analyze: (a) how students design, (b) student learning outcomes, and (c) student interests and perceptions. Just over half of the studies used qualitative methods to explore how small samples of students engage in engineering design. Although the overall research evidence of the impact of engineering design on technology and engineering students is sparse, there are some important descriptive findings relating to how engineering design can impact student learning and how students allocate their time and access information while designing. Current and future engineers will need to address sustainability's triple bottom line, simultaneously addressing financial, environmental, and social goals. There is also a need to improve diversity in engineering, both in the communities served by new technology and the representation of gender and ethnic minorities among engineering professionals. We present data gathered from 'Engineering 10: Introduction to Engineering Design and Analysis'. This freshman course includes a six-week Mechanical Engineering module entitled 'Sustainable Human-Centered Design', that covers both human-centered design techniques as well as the principles of sustainable design. We investigate these students' experiences, confidence, and goals, focusing on aspects that might vary with gender and ethnic affiliation. We suggest that enrollment diversity in engineering could be improved by teaching engineering in a manner that both complements the previous engineering and design background of all students, as well as emphasizes the learning goals most important to under-represented engineering students. We also recommend offering sustainability and service learning projects that appeal to women and ethnic minority students in order to pique their interest and encourage their pursuit of an engineering career. The article discusses the highlights of Mudd Design Workshop VII held in Claremont, California from May 28 to 30, 2009. The event focused on the significance of sustainability in engineering design and practice and in engineering education. According to the keynote speaker, Malcolm Lewis of Constructive Technologies Group Inc., sustainability should be incorporated from the very beginning of each project.
