Investigating the effect of iron irradiation on the superconducting properties of polycrystalline high-density MgB2 is presented. As a result, vortex-phase diagrams for the unirradiated and the irradiated samples can be compared and discussed.

Reporting a new apparatus for large area irradiation and nanostructuring of superconducting materials calibrated and used to enhance the superconducting properties of a 30 cm long multifilamentary Ag/BSCCO-2223 tapes is presented. The results obtained show that after irradiation there is an outstanding interaction at the matching condition that deeply affects the collective behavior of the vortices.

Reporting the status of research aimed at exploring the limits and the real possibilities of an approach when the magnetron sputtering technique and conventional substrates are employed the results point toward the scalability/integrability of the technology with silicon processing when the main target consists of networking for integrated electronics.

A new study investigates the effect of surface defects on high quality, melt textured Y-Ba-Cu-O using 2 GeV gold ions.

The possibility for the behavior of the superconducting properties in a bulk material could be improved is illustrated by introducing linearly correlated defects within a surface layer. Columnar defects with a depth of about 5% of the total thickness of sample were created on Ag/BSCCO-2223 tapes. Results show that creating surface trenches for vortices is always effective as a strategy in such range of magnetic fields.

The good quality High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) films are modeled as an agglomeration of islands coupled via Josephson contacts. By computing the critical current density and comparing this to the field in a Long Josephson Junction (LJJ), it was found that coupling energies in the junction are regulated by defects with given distribution and size. It was also noted that a 'hidden' network of LJJ with a suitable distribution of optimized defects is the cause of high critical current density in 'good quality' films.

Both sides of bulk melted textured YBCO were irradiated with 235 MeV Au ions. Two surface layers of columnar defects were developed since the thickness of the samples were greater than the ions' penetration range. Resulting temperature and field ranges exhibited improvements in critical current density and the reversible and irreversible regime boundary shifted towards higher temperatures.

The event builder and producer is the kernel of the Obelix on-line system. The data from each subdetector flow in parallel into the Global Event Builder memory. Then they are sent to the host computer where the Producer injects them into the buffer manager for recording and monitoring. The event builder and producer tasks are integrated within the overall Run Control system.

A neutron spectrometer based on the double scattering technique has been designed and built at the Laboratorio Tecnologico of INFN - Turin (Italy) for Cold Fusion experiments. The operating principle for the reconstruction of the energy can be applied to various fields (neutron emission from sources, fission and fusion) and is described together with the performed tests: a resolution of less than 560 KeV FWHM has been obtained for neutrons of 2.45 MeV, in a typical running configuration.

Meson spectroscopy and low energy antinucleon-nucleon interactions were studied in the Obelix experiment. A trigger control system was developed for the experiment which operates in a distributed environment and provides an easy to use mechanism for trigger selection. It has three basic characteristics of multiplicity, time-of-flight and topology selection. The trigger options work along parallel lines and any combination can be selected using the trigger control system.
