The aim of this article is to seek an answer to the following question: Do religion teachers have the opportunity to learn and develop skills in the areas necessary to support refugees from Ukraine? If so, how should this be done? To address the issue, the problem of intercultural relations was first presented in a synthetic manner, based on the perspective of the socio-political conditions that underpinned educational initiatives for the development of intercultural competence by teachers of religion. An attempt was then made to define basic concepts such as multiculturalism, interculturalism, intercultural competence and intercultural competence, as directly related to teachers of religion. The next stage of the research directly referenced practice by defining the necessary forms and specific actions in developing the intercultural competence of teachers of religion. A descriptive method, one of the qualitative methods, was applied to answer the questions posed. This article attempts to analyse the definition and structure of the concept of "intercultural competence" in scientific research and normative documents at the Ukrainian and European levels, to identify commonalities and differences, to characterise positive changes and, based on the analysis, to formulate a definition of the concept that would reflect today's realities and take into account modern challenges in education (general, foreign language). Starting from the end of the 20th century, scientific works of English-speaking, German-speaking, and domestic scientists were studied, but the main focus was on research from the last 20 years due to significant changes in the structure of societies due to globalisation, migration processes, and the activation of contacts in the professional and private spheres of representatives of different linguistic and cultural communities. Attention is drawn to the fact that understanding the concept of "intercultural competence" acquired new meanings at different stages of its research. Among the reasons for reconsideration and clarification are primarily the challenges that appeared under the influence of social processes in the pan-European and world dimensions, taking into account the national characteristics of countries' development. In accordance with the shift in emphasis in the definition of the concept, its structure also changed; however, despite the selection of specific components by different authors, the structure of intercultural competence retained a common core and layered new components. In the educational discourse, there is a noticeable increase in attention to the concept in the context of social competence, the development of which is aimed, among other things, at conflict-free coexistence, successful communication, and the ability to adapt to a multilingual and multicultural society.

The paper addresses the issue of a tertiary foreign language textbook for Engineering majors in the Russian context. The motivation for the research comes from the fact that despite numerous academic publications about the need for developing a modern foreign language textbook for technical universities, the problem still remains unsolved, especially, in relation to the development of the textbook’s sociocultural content that would meet the communicative needs in the professional setting. The present study aimed at presenting and validating the framework for the sociocultural representation using the learners’ and experts’ evaluations. The research questions explored types of sociocultural representation in two piloted English textbooks. Then the authors focused on students’ ability to identify the cross-cultural aspect of foreign language communication and sociocultural content in the textbooks. Finally, the research examined the feedback from experts and master students with some cross-cultural communication experience in their workplaces, which helped to evaluate the sociocultural representation in both textbooks. A total of 31 university students participated in the online survey. Data at the qualitative stage of the study were obtained from interviews. The findings show the prevalence of communication-based tasks and materials over knowledge-based ones. Besides, the learners’ and experts’ positive evaluations confirmed the sufficiency of the sociocultural representation. Being limited by the context of automotive Engineering majors, the study suggests a possible approach for designing sociocultural content of a foreign language textbook for Engineering students.

Intercultural communication (IC) textbooks are important means to transfer and construct knowledge about different cultural groups, yet it is still not clear how specific cultures are represented in these educational materials. This study addresses the question by analyzing the content of Chinese culture represented in a sample of intercultural communication textbooks. The findings show that (1) a variety of Chinese cultural contents are covered in IC textbooks, among which cultural products and persons are the most frequent references followed by cultural practices and perspectives; (2) representations of Chinese culture reflect diverse conceptualizations of culture ranging from essential to non-essential orientations; (3) Chinese cultures are presented often with theoretical concepts of the IC field and in comparative contexts together with other cultures. Language immersion has been an emerging educational method for K-12 students to acquire foreign languages. Despite its effectiveness, there are limited teacher education programs designed specifically for language immersion educators. Thus, many language immersion teachers have been applying knowledge learned from general teacher educational programs, which are not designed for language immersion settings, in their daily teaching. Simultaneously, language immersion programs, especially Chinese immersion programs, have identified multiple educational challenges related to curriculum design and content teaching, classroom management, and cross-cultural communications. This study aims to address these challenges from the perceptions of six selected Chinese immersion teachers towards their teacher preparation programs via qualitative in-depth case studies. The participant selection considers various education and teaching backgrounds of Chinese immersion teachers to represent a wide range of perspectives. The results show that the educational philosophy and psychology theories and practices, curriculum and instruction, cross-cultural competence, and practicum in existing preparation programs contribute positively towards immersion teaching in the U.S. However, Chinese immersion teachers demand more social-emotional learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion preparation. Potential solutions to these challenges require synergistic efforts from the current teacher preparation programs, Chinese immersion programs, and policymakers.

Introduction The United States population is diversifying, leading to higher rates of cultural, ethnic, and racial discordance between medical teams and patients. Studies show that pediatric residents lack training in cross-cultural communication (CCC). Methods We based learning objectives on the AAMC's Tool for Assessing Cultural Competency Training. The workshop design was based on Kolb's experiential learning model. In 2020–2021, we delivered this 2-hour workshop to trainees at two large, urban sites. We administered two surveys to evaluate our workshop: a retrospective pre-post survey following the workshop and a 3-month follow-up survey. Using 5-point Likert scales, participants rated their awareness of the effect of their own cultural identity on CCC and familiarity with and confidence using CCC models. We analyzed responses using Wilcoxon signed rank tests. Results Sixty-two trainees participated in the workshop; 44 completed the retrospective pre-post survey (71%). After the workshop, 36% were extremely aware of the effect of their own cultural identity on CCC compared to 4% before the workshop (p < .001). Confidence managing cross-cultural misunderstandings when conveying a diagnosis and explaining disease management increased after the workshop (70% vs. 25%, p < .001; 70% vs. 20%, p < .001, respectively). Twelve participants completed a 3-month follow-up survey (27%). Discussion A workshop using the experiential learning model to teach CCC increased participants' awareness of how their cultural identity impacted CCC and familiarity with and confidence in using two CCC models. This workshop offers pediatric program directors a tool to enhance their CCC curricula and meet ACGME requirements.

In this article, the authors consider the problems of English-language training within the framework of the traditional system of education in technical universities. The article also provides an analysis of the approach to teaching a foreign language, which represents the greatest practical difficulty in organizing the educational process. The purpose of the work is to analyze and justify the need to change the approach to teaching a foreign language to students, demonstrate one of the methods used to teach a foreign language using the example of an electronic course developed in the LMS Moodle system. Considerable attention is also paid to the importance of the presence of authentic materials in the classroom, the main the source of which is today the Internet and e-learning in the LMS Moodle system. Methods used in the study: methods of theoretical research general scientific (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction), the study of specific literature, as well as a method for analyzing existing methods of teaching a foreign language, teaching techniques using modern achievements of science and technology, allowing the development of foreign language communication, which plays a positive role in intercultural communication. Background. The article questions the possibility to increase the level of foreign language command through developing cross-cultural communicative competence (CCC) in students of non-linguistic universities. Despite extensive literature on intercultural communication, there are obviously gaps in investigating the way it can and should be built and the potential impact it may have towards students’ academic performance in general. Purpose. The paper aims to find out the possible correlation between the level of CCC formation and a command of a foreign language in general. To pursue the goal, an in-depth research into the CCC structure was carried out and the idea to simultaneously develop all its components was proposed. Method. The paper reports on the results of the mixed-method research aimed at gathering the data and evaluating them both qualitatively and quantitatively. Senior students of the Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia, were selected and divided into the control and experimental groups with the subsequent training on the pre-designed curricula, with a primary focus on developing all the components of the CCC in the latter. To assess their performance, the method of experimental verification, self- and peer evaluation, educational observation, questioning method were employed. In-depth data analysis and verification provided post-active phase of the experiment conducted. Results. The results of the carried-out experiments, first, proved the hypothetical assumptions on the efficiency of developing all the four CCC simultaneously and, second, showed that the targeted CCC development contributes to improving foreign language acquisition in general, which is supported by the increase in 5 out of 6 didactic units of the final testing where the experimental group participants surpassed the students in the control group. Conclusion. The study provides evidence for the impact CCC development has on the linguistic communicative competence. The devised methodology can be borrowed and customized for teaching foreign languages to university students and, in particular for developing intrinsic motivation through CCC. Further, future research should address particular components of the CCC.

The article describes the development and testing of the SJT-ICC situational judgment test designed to measure intercultural competence of a teacher in the form of behavioral preferences in the professional field of interaction with students and their parents. This approach makes it possible to assess behavioral aspects of intercultural competence in a particular professional area more effectively than survey methods. The SJT-ICC consists of 18 cases from pedagogical practice and four possible behavioral options for the teachers, from which the subject must choose the most appropriate one. These situations were prepared on the basis of qualitative research in the format of in-depth interviews centered around difficult, critical situations that a teacher encounters when working with children and par¬ents from other cultures (n=53). The assessment of the intercultural competence of the answer options was made on the basis of an expert survey of 23 special-ists.1367 teachers took part in the research to validate and check the consisten¬cy of the SJT-ICC. The outcome of the categorical principal component analysis (CatPCA) was a one-scale structure of the SJT-ICC which was confirmed by the confirmatory factor analysis. The relationship between the results of the SJT-ICC and the scales used for validation is predictable: intercultural competence is associated with indicators of professional success of a teacher working with students of other cultures. It is concluded that the SJT-ICC can be effectively used to assess the prerequisites for intercultural success among Russian teachers.

The article discusses the principles of coordination of intercultural philosophy with the main vectors of development of modern spheres of education. The mechanisms of the formation of intercultural philosophy since the end of the 20th century have been investigated. The etymological analysis of the concepts of “dialogue”, “discussion”, “contact”, “interaction”, “polylogue”, “speech of many” and “multiple contacts” is carried out. The authors analyze the processes of correlation, mutual influence and communication of cross-cultural discourse in the context of comparative philosophy and synthesis of cultures both from a general theoretical and methodological perspective. Special attention is paid to the prospects of studying the phenomenon of intercultural and interregional interactions of the philosophy of education, comparative and intercultural philosophy. In the present research, the authors have studied direct and indirect cross-cultural contact as well as motivated behaviour and language attitude in a study-abroad context in Russia. For research purposes, the mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative research methodologies was applied in order to demonstrate contact, behavioural and motivational variables throughout one academic year of the foundation programme. The participants were given a questionnaire containing 50 items aimed at evaluating direct spoken and written contact, media contact, and the importance of contact perceived. Also, the participants were involved in interviews covering seven principal themes that enabled the authors to gain insights into the changes occurring during the educational process and their possible reasons. The authors identified the main factors affecting the language learning motivation of international students studying in Russian international programmes, to define the type and frequency of the contact with the maximum impact on students’ perception of language acquisition. The results of encounter experiences were registered at three discrete points throughout the academic year. The detailed analysis showed that written and media use contacts had become more frequent throughout the year while direct spoken contacts had exhibited the opposite tendency. The authors give some recommendations that would encourage contact opportunities and reduce inter-group anxiety among foreign students. The implemented analysis of the research results has demonstrated that the self-confidence of international students had suffered immensely as the result of negative encounter experiences. These types of experiences could be fully eliminated or reduced to a minimum if the hosts were aware of the expectations, attitudes, feelings, and possible forms of the international students’ behaviour. The study proved the need for potential students to prepare for the study-abroad programmes before their arrival in the host country. They are supposed to develop communication skills and strategies as well as their linguistic ability. A necessary precondition for students upon their arrival is the provision of institutional support, which allows them to get used to a new cultural and social environment and to bond with native speakers.

The article analyzes new trends in the transformation of narratives in the sphere of culture and education under the influence of threats to Ukraine's national security. On the example of a gunner's song «In the meadow there is red guilder rose» the peculiarities of the communicative nature of the art of modern society, which clearly manifested itself during the Russian military aggression, which affects the formation of new doctrines of art education in Ukraine, are substantiated. The genesis of a gunner's song «In the meadow there is red guilder rose» is done, within the framework of which the trends of changing the interpretation of a musical work are illustrated. It is noted that art and culture have become one of the main tools of the hybrid war during the geopolitical confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, which takes place not only militarily, but also at the level of metanarratives that affect the processes of self-identification of the individual within the framework of the information-mental war. The markers of the imperial aggressive «humanitarian policy» of the Russian Federation, which influence the aggressive mental expansion on the territory of Ukraine, are considered. The transformations of classical art as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war are analyzed as a driving force for the further reform of art education in Ukraine. The article emphasizes that art education in Ukraine is a priority goal of the Information Security Strategy of Ukraine, calculated until 2025.

This article considers corruption’s intersections with gender, race, and colonialism in the public education sector in Puerto Rico, emphasizing Julia Keleher’s neoliberal practices, such as defunding public schools, while engaging in corrupt administrative practices that would benefit her as an individual. I contend that Keleher’s individual actions and consequences manifest in policy and in intercultural communication, both of which are exemplary of ongoing structural corruption aided by colonialism. In my analysis, colonial tropes about the white woman’s burden illustrate the specters of corruption and colonialism in education, showing how colonial contempt in communication is a significant aspect of Keleher’s unbridled corruption. It is important that scholars and activists revisit the ways in which education is entangled with colonial-capitalist empire in ways that both push against and engage in corrupt practices. The article considers the issue of the to-be translators’ training for cross-cultural professional interaction using as an example the communication between representatives of Spanish and Italian cultures. In this study, the author considered the possibility of combining the theoretical discipline of philosophical science with practical exercises for the development of speech competencies in Spanish and Italian foreign languages. After all, philosophy, according to the author, can become an integral auxiliary element in the formation of the worldview of future professionals, the formation of thinking, imagination, disclosure of creative and spiritual potential of the individual for further effective use in the realities of professional activity. The philosophy of education in recent years is considered by many authors as an important element that makes possible conscious educational development, which is not implemented within the dominant mentality. The article also described the essence of the concept of intercultural communication, because it is a fundamental element of professional translation. Given the practicality of new teaching models, the article examines the problem of forming a translator’s personality, their worldview, their human qualities, finding motivation and inspiration, revealing creative and intellectual potential and much more, which includes the process of preparing a translator for cross-cultural professional interaction. The domestic and foreign scientific and journalistic materials of the authors who worked in the field of philosophical science and its relationship with other disciplines and the process of professional training of applicants in higher education were considered and analyzed. Based on the experience and findings of research, the author has developed several examples of practical exercises based on crosscultural interaction in the Spanish-Italian environment, using which students of philology, translation and linguistics can work out and consolidate all necessary competencies in the process of philosophical science tasks. In the course of writing the article, the object of research was analyzed, which was the process of training future translators in higher education on the basis of a combination of philosophy and translation. The subject of research, which was the pedagogical conditions of preparation of future translators for cross-cultural professional interaction on the basis of a combination of philosophy and translation, was also considered. A set of exercises for the practice of cross-cultural interaction in the Spanish-Italian environment was developed, in which students of philology, translation and linguistics can work out and consolidate all the necessary competencies in the process of performing the proposed tasks through the prism of philosophical science. In the future, it is planned to expand and deepen research on this issue and develop new practical exercises and recommendations for their application for a comprehensive coverage of philosophical science for translators.

Given the growing activity of the integration processes and globalization of cultures, peoples, states and society as a whole, there is an increasing need to modernize and improve the practical and professional skills and abilities of all professions without exception that are somehow related to crosscultural, international or, as they are called, international communications and interactions. And translators of foreign languages in the context of the development of cross-cultural communications are in the first place, because they are the key figures in the negotiation process at various levels, from meetings in an informal setting to important business negotiations or diplomatic events. The solution of important local, interregional, interstate or even international issues often depends on the competence and perfection of the translator’s knowledge. The problem of correct interpretation and translation in the context of crosscultural communication is especially relevant for translators of cognate languages. Spanish and Italian were taken as an example since they originate from the Latin language and are similar in many aspects. Therefore, we can say that Spanish-Italian or Italian-Spanish translation is difficult to implement in the context of intercultural communication. The authors of the article have analyzed the list of flexible skills of Spanish and Italian translators in the context of cross-cultural communication and have developed practical exercises and recommendations for their application. In the future, the authors plan to consider each of the flexible skills features in details, to work out a set of methodological and practical exercises for their development

Indonesian students studying both at home and abroad, especially those taking the political negotiation course, are very much interested, but they do not understand the many cultural factors that must be taken into account when negotiating with other people from different backgrounds. This study aims to provide an overview of the understanding of Indonesian students of negotiation in intercultural settings. This study presents a literature review with primary data on articles, magazines, reports, and theories. This study indicates that a good cross-cultural understanding can increase the percentage of success in the research negotiation process. Cultural barriers such as the lack of foreign language skills in communication, a sense of ethnocentrism, and prejudice can hinder the study negotiation process.

The article covers significance of cultural and educational events for development of the bilingual environment; gives definitions of the terms “bilingualism”, “bilingual educational environment” and “indigenous / small peoples”. The relevance of studying this issue is in changing approaches from 2017 in teaching national languages in bilingual and multilingual regions of the country, in changing the number of hours in teaching in native (national) languages in a secondary school, in taking into account the national-regional component in the education system of a multinational state. The subject of the research is rapidly disappearing ethnic groups and their languages according to the classification of languages of UNESCO. The article emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting national languages and cultures for establishing intercultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence of ethnic groups in a multinational state. The purpose of the article is to identify and draw attention to the problem of disappearance of national languages and cultures through a set of measures in the field of culture, science, education. Research methods: study of literature on the research topic, analysis of educational programs and curricula, a comparative analysis method for describing the status of the languages. Results. In the study, we came to the conclusion that the availability of bilingual textbooks and teaching aids with assignments built on national-Russian bilingualism, the organization of various kinds of bilingual events and their popularization in the media will help to maintain a viable level of national languages and cultures of indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation.

The article gives a comparative analysis of the factors promoting an increase of interest in learning Russian on the part of non-native speaking students. The research is based on the survey of 225 students carried out at MGIMO-University and Chisinau State Pedagogical University (Moldova). The authors revealed linguo-didactic and sociocultural factors defining students’ choice of language of communication at the university and promoting the building of cognitive interest to learning Russian and forming intercultural competence. The research has shown that 1) the foreign bachelor’s and master’s students have clear goals in learning Russian; 2) the majority of students express an apparent interest in learning Russian; 3) most of students are interested in receiving skills in professional communication in Russian. The professional training of specialists in international relations implies knowing of several languages, the ability to work in multicultural environment, the readiness to effective cross-cultural communication. The research showed that it is necessary to make adjustments in the educational environment and the content of educational programmes based on the labour market demands.

This article examines and analyzes the essence and content of the terms „intercultural competence? and „intercultural communication?, various methods of effective learning of a foreign language through the formation of knowledge and skills to communicate in an intercultural communication environment through information and communication technologies. This research also requires an increase in the number of publications on the study of problems that arise in substantiating intercultural competencies in language. The present article describes a study carried out in a rural school in the province of Valencia (Spain) that is currently immersed in a process of transformation towards becoming an inclusive intercultural school. The objective of this study is to learn about the process of constructing the school's educational community and the factors involved in this process. The study used intrinsic case study methodology in which, through interviews, focus groups, participatory social diagnostic techniques and participant observation, we examine how this educational community is being constructed. The results show the dynamism and complexity of this process. The search for identity symbols, the need to continually inspire motivation among the members of the community and the emergence of a dichotomous discourse determines its evolution. The democratic participation of the community is demonstrated as a core element in the process of constructing this inclusive intercultural educational community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The following research elucidates the notion of alterity in education as an emancipatory experience in intercultural dialogue. The confluence of subjectivities that promotes intercultural dialogue is required to weave emancipations that defragment contemporary socio-political hegemonies. The libertarian processes use education as a favorite tool that articulates the knowledge that fosters democratic societies, as these are more just and equitable, in harmony with the inherent dignity of life. The conceptualization of intercultural communication competence (ICC) has been updated tentatively since it was formulated in the 1970s. A common recognition is that development of ICC can only be realized through an individual's adaptation, which results from the integration of the multiple forces within the individuals themselves. However, most of the existing research on ICC has focused on the conscious aspects of competence like abilities or skills that are distinguishable, that is, what to adapt, rather than the less conscious aspect, or its correlation with the unconscious part, that is, the how to adapt, or what the process of adaptation is. The absence of investigation into the adaptation process may have been a consequence of the educational context of studies on ICC, which depends much on, or is heavily affected by, the Cartesian dualistic viewpoints that emphasize the dichotomy of mind–body while ignoring the "middle" in between. Based on our previous semiotic analysis that explained the process of intercultural communication as a form of semiosis, this paper adopts more perspectives from edusemiotics to conceptualize learning following a triadic framework with emphasis on the process as the "middle," which renders it possible to reflect on the process of individuals' adaptation in contexts of intercultural communication. The objective of the paper is to reflect on Environmental Education in Ecuador, whose Constitution of 2008 recognized the Rights of Nature. This work presents the follow-up to the educational practices implemented through the 'TiNi's Methodology,' where students learn from the natural environment in a theoretical-practical way. As a result, the socioenvironmental discourse conceptually based on sustainable development is questioned and an eco-pedagogical alternative focused on the Andean worldview of Sumak Kawsay is proposed, which seeks to restore nature through regenerative development. Sexual consent is navigated in many different ways. The experience of sexuality is tightly bound to a cultural experience. This includes the way people communicate (or do not) about sex and sexuality in their lives. When discussing consent to sex within North America, people encounter many different cultures at a time: the culture of college, a culture of hegemonic masculinity, rape culture, a culture of feminist informed dialogue, a culture of varying degrees of sex-negativity or erotophobia, etc. When sexuality professionals educate about consent, they are embarking on cross cultural work. Encouraging an enthusiastic, verbal consent policy risks being culturally incompetent based on how people have been shown to communicate their sexual consent in the research. In this article, I will discuss the conceptualizations of sexual consent in the sexual science research literature and examine them alongside models and theories of cross-cultural communication. Based upon a discussion of the concept education and its temporal structures, this paper attempts to show how education could be seen as contributing to different forms of social and individual temporal crises prevalent in modern societies since at least the end of the 19th century. In contemplating those relations, and based on historical and intercultural explorations into Classic European and Japanese thinking, the paper aspires to open up a new horizon for a systematic revaluation and conceptual reinvention of education. Since advances in computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools have made virtual exchanges readily available in educational practices, telecollaboration has been gaining traction as a means to provide practical experiences and cultural exposure to language learners and, more recently, teacher trainees. Drawing upon Byram's (1997) model of intercultural communicative competence (ICC), this study examines 48 teacher trainees' interculturality through a telecollaborative project between two teacher training classes from Turkey and the USA. This study relies on data generated by the participants throughout this telecollaborative project: weekly online discussion board posts within groups of six and post-project reflections. Although developing ICC is an arduous and prolonged task, the data analysis suggested that the participants' experiences in this telecollaboration contributed to their emergent ICC through discussions on the topics of multicultural education and interactions with trainees from another educational context. Their intercultural learning is evidenced by their (1) awareness of heterogeneity in their own and interactants' culture, (2) nascent critical cultural awareness, and (3) curiosity and willingness to learn more about the other culture. Thus, this study implies that telecollaboration offers an effective teacher training venue that affords teacher trainees with first-hand intercultural encounters to engage with otherness and prepare for their ethnolinguistically diverse classrooms. Introduction: the article outlines the concepts of communicative competence and cross-cultural communication. The authors highlight their place in higher education institutions based on a case-study of Tyumen region (Russia). The increased interest in the process of cross-cultural communication determines the relevance of the research.. Materials and Methods: during the research process the authors used descriptive method, observation and learning with consulting of relevant literature. The methodological basis of the research is a philosophical concept of the relationship between culture and morality, communication, inter-ethnic and ecological culture and others. Results: this communicative education system should be continuous, comprehensive, interdisciplinary and integrated to promote personal development of students with differentiation depending on professional orientation. Teaching should be consistent with cultural traditions and ethical values as the basis of person’s physical and mental health, knowledge of the world and their pl ace in it. Discussion and Conclusions: the development of communicative competence takes place in the educational process. The communication will be successful in the new changed reality of professional activity. The research of verbal and nonverbal communication is useful for commercial and government institutions. It is necessary to study the communicative process in the educational environment promoting personal development of the students. The conditions of integration processes demonstrate some significant changes. The main priorities of modern higher education are full-fledged formation and development of the student’s abilities. It is possible to assume that communicative competence will be the link and the basis of the interaction of all educational forms. In rhetorical discourse, tenors can be formed intentionally and used as rhetorical strategies to implement the speaker's goals. The article reports on a study of the contextual category 'tenor' and its prosodic realisation in rhetorical discourse. The paper examines rhetorical, auditory and acoustic features in the samples of English academic presentations (lectures). The author argues that tenors can reflect both the relationships of the participants of a particular speech event and the relationships associated with a broader sociocultural context. Analysing tenor as a sociocultural phenomenon the author demonstrates its correlations with some specific features of British speech culture. Special attetnion is given to the role of prosody in conveying and identifying tenors. The article contains an overview of the prosodic markers of tenor: tone of voice, pitch parameters, temporal characteristics. The study of tenor and its prosodic markers contributes to a fuller understanding of the influence of contextual factors on the prosodic realisation of discourse. The observations made in the paper may be useful to develop cross-cultural communication competence and rhetorical competence of EFL students.

The article considers the key points of professional language training of IR students. The authors analyze the interrelated conditions that determine its effectiveness: building professionally relevant competences, specifics of professional language training,cross-cultural awareness, the use of educational technologies as well as selection of teaching materials and re-training lecturers.

Spiritual experiences are common across religious and non-religious faiths, but schoolchildren are often afraid to share these because they fear ridicule from peers who are convinced religion is irrational. The need to speak about spirituality in religious education is increasingly recognised. Signposts suggests that intercultural understanding implies recognising religious students' perception of reality and helping others understand it. Religious education in Norway now includes exploration of existential questions as a core element, and in England, making sense of religious, spiritual and mystical experiences has been suggested as a big idea. In this paper, we discuss how the dualistic paradigm of modern science makes it difficult to take spirituality seriously as lived experience and empirical phenomenon. Instead we suggest a transrational approach to explore our multidimensional reality in an intercultural dialogue where insiders and outsiders learn from each other. French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1984) defined the term "cultural capital". This term denotes the stock of our cultural knowledge, and this phenomenon is also mapped into the domains of interculturality. Thus, in postmodernity, intercultural capital is increasingly talked about, which entails first acquiring intercultural knowledge and then its practice at different levels, with particular emphasis on the role of education in the process of acquiring it. This type of education entails understanding, adopting and nurturing intercultural phenomena such as intercultural communication, competences, intercultural dialogue, sensibility, etc. All of the above play a very important role in the global world we live in, directly reflecting on all its aspects, including the economic and business stability of the world. Teacher-led initiatives built upon relationships, moral purpose, and a commitment to act have the potential to bring about change in twenty-first century schools. In order to implement and sustain change, teachers must collaborate with diverse colleagues and members of the school community. Intergroup communication across cultural and linguistic divides, though not impossible, is challenging as the data from this study shows. The purpose of the qualitative study was to explore factors that influenced teachers' thinking, behavior, and interactions as they designed and implemented a dual language education program for English Language Learners. Narrative inquiry though a heuristic lens allowed for the gathering of stories that illustrate the lived realities of the participants. Teachers' narratives reveal emergent themes regarding cross-cultural confusions amongst colleagues, warranting further study of intergroup communication in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores contextual factors that influenced teacher leadership behavior during the evolution of a dual language education program for elementary Englishlanguage learners. Teachers' narratives provide evidence of the relative strength of school leadership streams, that is, relationships, moral purpose, and commitment to action. However, emergent themes reveal that the primary obstacle to progress was intercultural communication. Diverse teachers struggled to work collaboratively on committees, which ultimately affected group decision-making and the progress of the program. Although teacher preparation programs and schools are focusing on culturally responsive pedagogy, the data indicate that cultural competence among colleagues warrants attention as well.
