Caribbean university students from Costa Rica wrote and published for the first time in the opinion pages of the newspaper La Nación as part of a communication course for non-communicators in one of the five public universities in the Central American country. This generation of twenty-somethings, which we call “instagramers,” perceived that publishing in traditional media gave them a larger audience, more credibility, and an improvement in their writing compared to their daily publications on social networks. This study also documented a teaching strategy in which students gave new meanings to the traditional press, while completing a task that ended up published as a brief newspaper commentary.
