ACTIVISTS , *SOCIAL movements , *PUBLIC demonstrations , *STUDENT activism , *SCHOOL closings , *INSTITUTIONAL racism - Abstract
South Africa and Brazil are notorious for having some of the highest levels of (racialised) inequality on the planet, and dysfunctional education systems failing millions in their aspirations for a better life. Over 2015-16, student protests erupted across Brazilian and South African schools and universities, challenging these conditions through strikes, occupations, on-campus and street protests, and intellectual production. This paper builds on a World-Systems theoretical framework to understand the similarities, circulation, and distance between the two contemporaneous movements. In Brazil, the ‘Primavera Secundarista' high school occupations dealt primarily with local political dynamics, such as school closures, and intersectional forms of oppression. In South Africa, the ‘Fallist' university mobilisations demanded free, decolonised education, alongside addressing issues of outsourcing and institutional racism. In the first section, I give a comparative overview of these student movements’ similarities, situating them in their context and highlighting the key concerns and political and pedagogical practices of student activists in each. While these movements did not generally engage with each other, there were some important points of interaction, discussed in the second section. While highlighting these points of connection, I also advance an argument in the third section for why there was nevertheless relatively little direct engagement between these contemporaneous movements that otherwise had so much in common. The points of connection and disconnection between these similar movements offers insights about the functioning of the contemporary World-System and the modes of transnational circulation between movements therein, with lessons for transnational understandings of social movements, especially South-South movements. 6. El potencial educativo de los videojuegos: Su evaluación a través de una rúbrica.

- Abstract
Video games are a widespread leisure resource associated with entertainment, relaxation and escape through play. The research questions its educational potential. The aim of the study is to provide a rubric capable of evaluating the educational potential of any video game. There is no record of a comparable tool applicable to any video game. A qualitative and phenomenographic methodology was chosen. Forty-two interviews were conducted with teachers and experts from the video game industry. From the theoretical review and the analysis of the testimonies, we obtained as a result the ECV 5* (“Educational Classification of Video games 5*”) tool. The most relevant conclusion was that the educational potential of a video game is evaluable and transferable information. Thus, the ECV 5* can serve as a reference for the design and consumption of the resource, as well as for a better discernment of how far a video game can go in the education of a person. Its practical intention is to provide the data of its educational value in an easy and intuitive way: from 0 to 5 stars. It could be a way for users, educators, companies and society in general to be more aware of the educational potential of any video game, for its design, use, purchase and sale, selection, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL services , *POLITICAL refugees , *RACISM in education , *IMMIGRATION status , *RACE discrimination , *CIVIL society - Abstract
The article aims to illustrate how discrimination against migrants manifests itself in different areas in Spain. The areas selected, based on the economic, social and cultural rights recognized for all people, are education, health, housing, employment and social services. Finally, the text presents some conclusions and recommendations that could be considered by public institutions and civil society organizations, aimed at promoting good practices when addressing specific forms of discrimination that affect migrant persons. In this article, the term migrant is used to designate all people who have crossed an international border, regardless of their immigration status, including refugees, asylum seekers, and those who have been forced to move for other reasons. CRONBACH'S alpha , *INTRACLASS correlation , *DRUGSTORES , *INSULIN therapy , *LIKERT scale - Abstract
Objective: To review and validate a questionnaire on knowledge of injectable insulin management (JH-SEFAC) by patients with diabetes for use in community pharmacies. Methods: Study design: cross-sectional observational in Spanish community pharmacies during the first half of 2023. Inclusion criteria: patients with diabetes, of legal age, on insulin treatment. Questionnaire design: a nominal group of community pharmacist reviewed and piloted the initial questionnaire to determine its feasibility. It was approved by the CEIC of Aragón (PI22/375). Content validation: by a multidisciplinary group of experts in diabetes, using an ad hoc evaluation questionnaire of 10 questions (Likert scale of 1-5). Reliability: by means of the internal consistency index (Cronbach's alpha) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Reproducibility (test/retest): the results of the questionnaire administered twice 2-3 weeks apart to the group of patients were compared. Pharmacists members of the SEFAC Diabetes Working Group collaborated. Sample: calculated in 127 subjects (95% CI and precision of 10%). Results: 20 community pharmacies from 13 autonomous communities included 131 patients. The expert assessment was 4.52 out of 5 (90.4%). The Keiser-Meyer-Olkin test was 0.626 and Bartlett's test was significant (p<0.001). The Cronbach's alpha of the global questionnaire was 0.804 and the ICC was 0.902. The mean score of the questionnaire was 15.98 out of 31 points. Conclusions: The JH-SEFAC questionnaire was validated to evaluate the management of insulin injectables, providing community pharmacists with a valuable tool for therapeutic education. HIGHER education & state , *EDUCATION policy , *PUBLIC universities & colleges , *HEALTH programs , *DEONTOLOGICAL ethics - Abstract
The purpose of this research lies in evaluating the current state of higher university education about bioethics studies in the faculties of health sciences in the Peruvian territory. The methodological design adopts a descriptive level with a mixed approach that is divided into two stages: The first consists of a qualitative theoretical-analytical-rational analysis, followed by a subsequent empirical analysis with a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional approach. The main discoveries refer to the existence of nineteen licensed public universities in Peru that offer the Human Medicine degree. However, it was found that the Bioethics course is only available in nine of these institutions. In summary, it can be affirmed that in the educational programs of careers related to health sciences, attempts are made to address ethical principles from different perspectives, for example, through courses on general ethics or deontology. However, this strategy is not considered adequate. In addition, it is imperative to promote an educational policy within the faculties of health sciences that mandates the mandatory inclusion of a bioethics course in the curricula of health sciences programs. PUBLIC education , *MIGRANT agricultural workers , *SOCIAL classes - Abstract
Through the school system, social inequality and capitalist, patriarchal, and colonialist violence are reproduced when the causes of precariousness are made invisible, and the myth of meritocracy is reinforced. These inequalities are accentuated throughout the educational path, generating a "Matthew effect". That is, while the upper social classes have an initial advantage and tend to benefit more and more as time goes by, those who are at a disadvantage from the beginning experience an accumulation of inconveniences. Through the specific case of the deficient educational attention received by Migrant Agricultural Day Laborers (MADL) in Mexico, this article analyzes how school institutions have become intertwined with these contexts of violence. In addition, it examines how, since the implementation of neoliberal policies, the exclusion of the most vulnerable population, which is considered cheap and easily replaceable labor, has increased. Likewise, the proposal of intersectionality is taken up again to reconstruct the different aspects that generate discrimination against JAM girls, boys, and adolescents who, although they share the same root and based on the dominant power structure, have various edges that make these minors a particularly vulnerable segment of the population. The evidence shows that the government's capacity to care for the population in vulnerable situations has been exceeded, and questions arise as to whether current programs can meet specific needs or whether new public policies are required in line with reality. SCHOOL violence , *SOCIAL processes , *VIOLENCE - Abstract
This essay was born from presenting a theoretical-methodological proposal to analyze invisible school violence from the perspective of collective health. From this perspective, the analysis of this violence embodied in the lives of boys and girls allows us to know how it has been incorporated into societies as a form of education. The socio-historical determination of invisible school violence will enable us to unravel the general, particular, and singular dimensions of the social process that involves it. The categories of social reproduction, the health-illness process, ways of going through life, and the subjective and social dimensions of said process are explored. This is done to broaden the view and move away from the biomedical perspective that finds actions to solve the problems of illness in the physical body, but not for those processes that cause suffering, restrict autonomy, and perpetuate domination, inequalities, and violence. - Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) has found many applications in anesthesiology, in therapeutic areas, postoperative pain management, and education in regional anesthesia. VR has been used as a complement to pain management in several conditions. In the field of medical education, the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) with virtual reality gives rise to the creation of simulation platforms that provide a tangible experience for anesthesiologists, thereby enhancing the precision and performance of their techniques. These innovative tools offer advantages such as personalization of the educational process and the ability to recreate complex situations, which is crucial in the realm of modern medicine. Outdoor painted sculptures (OPSs) are a regular feature of public spaces and private collections throughout the world. Their painted finishes can appear deceptively simple, but their esthetic is a subtle combination of color, texture, and reflectance, making them challenging to care for and repair. OPSs are exposed to direct sunlight, rain, wind, pollutants, human interactions, and biological debris from plants and animals. Conservation of these artworks is a matter of preserving an artist's esthetic intent, rather than the original paint system, which will inevitably need to be replaced. This paper discusses the development of the Getty Conservation Institute workshop Treatment Strategies for OPS, to develop skills in this specialized area of conservation. The full repainting of an artwork is expensive, laborious, logistically challenging, and includes the use of chemicals and processes with significant carbon footprints: improving the economic and environmental sustainability of these treatments has become imperative. The workshop teaches participants strategies that help stave off full repainting, such as working with specialized painters for lasting localized repairs, removing graffiti without altering the sculpture's finish, and creating regular maintenance programs that help prevent deterioration. The purpose of this research was to understand how second-semester students of the Medicine and Surgery academic program at Universidad del Valle learn about the main ideas of Human Macroscopic Anatomy (HMA). As a methodological proposal, a case study was carried out. Students' knowledge and understanding of HMA was assessed. For this, the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) model was taken into account, which includes the motivations and interests for learning, as well as the student' previous ideas. A participant observation of the theoretical and practical classes was carried out for 16 weeks, recording observations in a field diary, and obtaining audiovisual material. All the information was organized in an analytical index, creating codes for the analysis. The analysis, interpretation and representation of results were done using the ATLAS.ti 22 software. It was found that students learn the main ideas of HMA through a process that implies commitment to their academic training, where interests, motivations, prior knowledge and participation are involved. It is important that different study methods are used during this process, and that there is the support from the professor and the institution, who should favor the learning and immersion of the students into the academic world and university culture, through the design of proposals that integrate teaching, learning and assessment, and also take into account the social and cultural realities of their students. The denomination of the "ulna" bone as "cubitus" bone is an error in terminology still observed in anatomy study texts and Chilean school textbooks, even though the term ulna was established as the official term in the 20th century. This problem is a reflection of the slow progressive change in academic communities and the population in general, through the traditional transfer of knowledge. Scientific dissemination allows for accelerating such a process, and in recent years, it has been enhanced through social networks and virtual platforms such as TikTok. Few studies relate the use of TikTok with anatomical learning. This research describes school students' perception of an informative video on correctly using the term "ulna." It analyzes the possible scope as a complementary activity to anatomical teaching for the school community and society. A TikTok video was developed and published four months before showing it to 17 11th-grade students from Viña del Mar, and then they were asked to complete a perception survey. In addition, statistical data provided by the TikTok platform itself was recorded. The results revealed a favorable reception of the informative content among the participating students, with a high percentage expressing total or partial agreement in all the statements evaluated (up to 82.4 %). The metrics delivered by the platform show an international reach, the main viewers being people from Chile (35.5 %), Mexico (25.3 %), and Colombia (7.2 %). Among the aspects mentioned by the students that need improvement, are the quality of visual editing and the fluency of the explanation. Given thepositive perception obtained from the video, we consider that using these complementary tools can improve human anatomy's teaching and learning processes and broaden our practices' impact on the educational community and society. We evaluate two rival hypotheses of: (a) divergent trajectories — or cumulative learning gaps — between children with severe and moderate developmental lags and developmentally on-track children; and (b) convergent trajectories — which predict the inverse pattern. We estimate growth curves using panel data from a cohort of students first assessed by the Early Years Evaluation (Uruguay) at the end of kindergarten (age five), assessed up to three times in language and mathematics on an annual basis during years three to five since their transition to first grade. By the third year in school, substantial differences are found in reading and maths skills between children that did and did not show early developmental lags (effects range between.31 and.46 sd). We find a prevalent pattern of divergence in learning gains between years three to five in school (gaps increase by.10 sd per year). Our results suggest that tackling academic gaps will require timely interventions based on early identification of children who are academically at risk. Uruguay has developed early developmental assessment tools and learning monitoring systems, both of which should serve as the basis of an effective early warning system to deal with learning disparities from early ages. CAPABILITIES approach (Social sciences) , *SOCIAL justice , *LIBERTY - Abstract
This paper explores the fundamental theses of the capabilities approach and differentiates it from notions of development that are more focused on the generation of wealth and growth. The paper emphasizes the importance of action in the development of life projects and describes the importance of emancipation in exercising freedoms. It then describes the education challenges from the perspective of the capabilities approach. It situates the importance of this approach in the Latin American context, where freedom is closely linked to the pursuit of social justice. Finally, it describes the different areas of application of the capabilities approach in education and points out the limitations of formal education in the contemporary world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *ELDER care , *SMART cities , *QUALITY of life , *OLDER people - Abstract
This article aims to conduct a comparative analysis between the University of the Third Age (UNATI/UEM) and the Brazilian Charter for Smart Cities. To achieve this objective, we conducted qualitative research of a documentary nature, identifying convergent aspects between the two documents. The results reveal six key points of convergence: the emphasis on quality of life for the elderly, the planning of social actions to support this demographic, access to cultural and educational services, encouragement of technological advancements, the training of professionals to care for the elderly through teaching, research, and outreach, and healthcare provisions for the elderly. The study concludes that developing aging policies and training human resources for elderly care can reshape perceptions of aging, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for the elderly. ARTIFICIAL intelligence , *COMPUTER science education , *INTELLIGENT tutoring systems , *ACADEMIC achievement , *EVIDENCE gaps - Abstract
Several studies have investigated the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students' learning achievement in education. However, limited research targeted Computer Science (CS) education, which is considered crucial regardless of the future profession. Consequently, scant information exists on how AI might impact students' learning achievement in CS education. To address this research gap, this study conducts a systematic review and a meta-analysis to investigate how AI integration affects learning achievement in CS education and the potential moderating variables of this effect. Specifically, 28 studies (n = 2765 participants in total) were included and meta-analyzed, and the obtained effect size was very large (g = 1.36, p <.001). Particularly, intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) were found to have the highest effect (g = 1.45; huge) as an AI technology. Additionally, the AI intervention duration and the geographical distribution of students are found to moderate the AI effect in CS education. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for various stakeholders (e. g., educators, computer scientists, instructional designers) on how to integrate AI and improve learning experiences and outcomes in CS education.
