Sustainable development seeks to strike a balance between economic growth, social well-being and environmental protection. It should be integrated into financial development as well. As a consequence, banks are realising changes in their roles, decision-making, and operations. This paper aims to introduce a structured literature outlook about the different interpretations of sustainable financial development (SFD) on micro and macro levels. The literature mapping is focusing on three main contexts. The basic assumption of the paper is that it is crucial to emphasise the importance of country-level economic growth, the indicators used to determine the level of financial development and the resilience of the financial intermediary actors. As a consequence, the paper represents some existing results in terms of these three contexts. This gives the future basis for the efficient interpretation of sustainable financial development aspects in the operation and the decision-making processes of financial institutions and also for policy-making institutions on the macro-level. In this article, eco-efficiency – ‘sustainable development at the company level’ or ‘value added per environmental impact’ – is operationalized at the production unit level. An eco-efficiency index is developed and tested with 31 Finnish and 37 Swedish pulp, paper and board mills in 1993–1996. In essence, gross value added without a change in inventories is divided by environmental impact aggregated with seven valuation methods. The definition of eco-efficiency as sustainable development at the company level appears to be problematic. [Eco]2-efficiency does not include the third, ethical dimension sustainable development, but only ecology and economy. Value added is a limited indicator of economic performance and very sensitive to changes in market prices, while environmental impact changes with valuation assumptions. The Swedish mills were generally more eco-efficient, while the Finnish mills were more eco-efficient in integrated woodfree paper, solid bleached sulphate board and liquid packaging board. Global climate change due to increasing CO2 emissions threatens the development and survival of many countries, especially those on the coast. Intentional government spending by sectors can lower CO2 emissions to help these countries in sustainable development. Meanwhile, governance has some importance in enabling governments to achieve their economic development goals. Does governance affect the public spending - CO2 emissions nexus in developing economies? The paper seeks answers by employing the system GMM Arellano-Bond estimators to assess the impact of public spending, governance/institutional quality, and their interaction on CO2 emissions for a sample of 109 developing economies between 2002 and 2021. The results seem counter-intuitive that public spending reduces and governance increases CO2 emissions, while their interaction lowers them. Furthermore, private investment and economic growth promote CO2 emissions, while trade openness decreases them. Major crises such as greenhouse effect and resource depletion remind people that environmental protection is imminent. However, the economic growth is always accompanied by the destruction of the environment, so the development of green industry economy is very necessary for the balance between the two. However, many of today's green industry economic development is still in the theoretical stage, and there are no substantive measures. Therefore, this paper aims to build a reasonable development evaluation model for the green industry economy, and use the results of the model to explore the sustainable development of the green industry economy. In view of this, in the stage of proposing the model, this paper refers to a large number of literature and field investigation, and selects 30 suitable evaluation indexes. The experimental results of the green industrial economy in Sichuan Province with the designed model show that the comprehensive evaluation index of green economic development has increased steadily. It reached 0.8255 in 2016, which is in line with the actual situation. Sustainable development requires social development and economic construction to be coordinated with the carrying capacity of the ecological environment. It necessitates adhering to the concept of sustainable development while pursuing economic development and social progress, improving the effective utilization rate of natural resources, and protecting and improving the ecological environment in which people live. This paper takes the e-commerce trade ecological industrial park in Dalian Economic Development Zone as an example to comprehensively evaluate its sustainable development ability using the state-of-the-art techniques of soft computing. Soft computing has recently gained appeal over traditional hard computing because it can cope with uncertainty just as easily as a human can. The basic aim of the study is to avoid excessive resource and environmental pressure hindering the coordinated development of various subsystems of the park. First, an evaluation index system containing four subsystem elements of the environment, society, economy, and resources was constructed, and the importance of each index in the evaluation index system was calculated. Second, the distance model and fuzzy logic of soft computing were used to comprehensively evaluate the sustainability of the selected industrial park. Six criteria were established to describe the sustainability of the industrial park based on the opinions of industry professionals, with references to the research findings of local and international forerunners. The finding of the paper shows that the development level index of each subsystem of the industrial park has continued to rise, except for a few cases. The result also demonstrates that the overall coordinated development degree of the park has increased year by year from 2010 to 2019. This means that the coordinated development level has improved from the initial barely coordinated level in 2010 to the high-quality coordinated development level in 2019; however, the overall coordinated development degree is still less than 0.9. Through this study, it is possible to judge the sustainable development ability of the four subsystems of the industrial park and whether it meets the relevant standards of resource consumption and environmental protection stipulated by the state. It is of great practical significance for promoting the formation of a good ecological chain between enterprises in the park, realizing resource recycling, and reducing waste discharge. The current period of rapid industrialization has not only brought about rapid economic growth but also caused serious energy shortages and environmental pollution, which have affected the sustainable development of the economy. Therefore, it is of great significance to analyse the changes in regional economic, energy, and environmental carrying capacity (3ECC); analyse the interaction among them; and propose corresponding optimization strategies for promoting regional sustainable development. In this study, a 3ECC simulation system is constructed from the pressure and support levels of load-bearing capacity. A system dynamics model is used to simulate the evolution path and action relationship of the 3ECC system, and an empirical test is completed in the Yangtze River Economic Belt region in China. A coupling coordination model and Bayesian vector autoregressive model are used to further explore the degree and action mode of the 3ECC system support and pressure indices. The results show that the model can truly reflect the characteristics of regional development and is suitable for prediction in this study. From 2015 to 2035, driven by technological progress, China's economic aggregate will grow by 223%, oil consumption by 33%, coal consumption by 23%, soil pollution by 197%, water pollution by 134%, and air pollution by 80.9%. Moreover, the coordination degree of the 3ECC supporting indicators gradually increases, while that of the pressure indicators gradually decreases, indicating that economic growth has a synergistic effect on environmental protection and energy conservation, thus further expanding the differences between environmental pollution and energy consumption. Finally, the supporting index of the economic carrying capacity and supporting index of the environmental carrying capacity have the widest influence range, and the optimization of economic and environmental development status is beneficial to the overall improvement of the 3ECC system. The influence range of the energy carrying capacity support index is small, indicating that coal and oil are being gradually replaced by other energy sources. Environmental resources play an extremely important role in economic development. In the context of China's economic development entering a new normal, attaching importance to environmental protection and strengthening environmental regulations will have an important impact on the original foreign direct investment (FDI) and China's economic development. Therefore, this paper combines the characteristics of the "new normal" of China's economic development, takes 30 provinces in China from 2008 to 2017 as the research object, and uses the PVAR model and impulse response function to re-verify the interaction mechanism and path among environmental regulation, FDI and high-quality economic development. The study found that: (1) There is an obvious mutual promotion relationship between environmental regulations and the quality of China's economic development and economic development environment. Strengthening environmental regulation is conducive to the realization of China's economic "new normal" development goal. (2) Although the strengthening of environmental regulation will have a significant constraint effect on FDI and China's economic growth rate, but the effect is relatively small. (3) FDI and economic growth rate variables are mutually motivated and promote each other, but both of them have a significant inhibitory effect on regional environmental regulation. In general, under the background of the "new normal" of China's economic development, appropriately increasing the intensity of environmental regulation is not only conducive to environmental protection and promoting high-quality and sustainable economic development, but also can serve the purpose of guiding the structure of foreign investment and transforming the mode of economic growth. Promoting the green development of resource-based cities is an essential way to achieve sustainable regional economic development. Based on 2009–2019 panel data of the Yellow River Basin cities, this study adopts the super-directional distance function model to measure the green development efficiency of these selected cities. Furthermore, based on the Malmquist-Luenberger index, this paper focuses on the dynamic change trend of green development efficiency and internal driving factors. Furthermore, the Tobit model is used to specifically explore the influencing factors affecting the green development of cities. The findings suggested that the green development efficiency of selected cities falls in the middle to high range and that the efficiency varies among all cities in the Yellow River Basin. Likewise, technical efficiency improvements and technological progress drive development efficiency, and the former contributes more to green development. However, financial development, energy structure adjustments, and environmental regulation can strongly contribute to the green development of cities, and each influencing factor has obvious temporal and regional differences. Improving the environment and optimizing industrial structure are the primary tasks of resource-based cities in western China. This paper analyzes the impact mechanism and path of environmental effect on the industrial structure using the panel data of 37 prefecture-level resource-based cities in western China from 2008 to 2019. The results show that the environmental effect is beneficial for optimizing the industrial structure of resource-based cities in western China. The economic development and resource endowment amplify the positive impact of the environmental effect on industrial structure upgrades. In resource-based cities with different growth cycles, environmental effect has different impact on industrial structure upgrades. Technological innovation of enterprises and public awareness of environmental protection are effective paths for environmental effect to promote industrial structure upgrading. Therefore, it is really crucial to promote environmental protection, identify regional characteristics, and enhance departmental cooperation for resource-based cities in western China, realizing industrial structure upgrades and sustainable economic development. Three types of spatial function zoning is an effective measure for regional environmental protection and orderly development. For ecological and economic coordinated development, spatial function zones should be divided scientifically to clear its direction of development and protection. Therefore, based on ecological constraints, a beneficial discussion would be about the key ecological function areas adopting the concept of ecological protection restriction and supporting socioeconomic development for spatial function zoning. In this paper, the researchers, taking Tacheng Basin, Xinjiang of China as an example, choose township as basic research unit and set up an evaluation index system from three aspects, namely, ecological protection suitability, agricultural production suitability, and urban development suitability, which are analyzed by using spatial analysis functions and exclusive matrix method. The results showed that: 1) This paper formed a set of multilevel evaluation index systems for three types of spatial function zoning of the key ecological function areas based on a novel perspective by scientifically dividing Tacheng Basin into ecological space, agricultural space, and urban space, which realized the integration and scientific orientation for spatial function at the township scale. 2) Under the guidance of three types of spatial pattern, the functional orientation and suggestions of development and protection was clearly defined for ecological protection zones, ecological economic zones, agricultural production zones, and urban development zones. 3) A new idea of space governance is provided to promote the coordinated and sustainable development between ecology and economy, which can break the traditional mode of thinking about regional economic development, and offers a scientific basis and reference for macro decision-making. Green development is an important way to achieve global sustainable development goals, and has become one of the main research hotspots in recent years. Balancing economic development and environmental protection has turned out to be a great challenge in Beijing, the capital of China, which can provide some suggestions on ecological civilization construction and green development for other cities. However, there have been limited studies on this crucial topic. Therefore, based on the statistical data for Beijing from 2006 to 2016, this paper constructed the green development evaluation system of Beijing, and used the Projection Pursuit Model and spatial analysis method to analyze the spatial and temporal changes in its green development level. We also aimed to further explore the influences of key factors on green development. Our results illustrated that: (1) the overall and average levels of green development in Beijing showed significant increasing trends; (2) there are obvious spatial differences in green development among districts in Beijing, with the outer districts showing higher values; and (3) the environmental condition and human consumption were two important factors driving the green development in Beijing. Sustainable development - a development model that seeks to ensure a balance between economic growth, quality of life and environmental conservation in the medium and long term, so as to meet the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations - has represented decades, the guideline that has underpinned development policies, programs and strategies. The issue of the mechanisms of financial support for Romania's agriculture is very important in our country's efforts to become competitive on the European agricultural market. However, the peculiarities of Romanian agriculture remain almost similar to the pre-accession period (fragmented agrarian structures, low technical and economic yields, outdate technical endowment, etc.), and the main question is whether community support mechanisms increase or remain Romanian farm performance, support measures to ensure their survival on the market. The paper highlights the regional development strategies of the NorthEast Region, solutions to improve the process of strategic implementation of development objectives, by providing viable tools for monitoring sustainable development at regional and rural level, eliminating their oversizing trends. The target indicators proposed by this paper and their rationale allow such a realistic and correct estimation of the strategic implementation and the measurement of the impact of the strategic objectives. In this context, we consider that proposed and substantiated result indicators starting from the previous trend of the region, for all strategic priorities 2014-2020, can be much better materialized in projects with major impact on sustainable development both at regional level and the rural environment, and the way of their evaluation and estimation represents a viable methodology for monitoring the regional development strategies. The evolutionary trends of the economic and social environment are increasingly associated with new forms of the economic growth and development, focused on the attention given to the relation with the environment and the impact on this. This orientation is also supported by the sustainable development strategies, which are increasingly active for the national business practices. By this paper, we aim to bring together, in a common vision, the approaches that support a balanced economic growth, in accordance with the requirements of the environmental protection and the natural resources conservation. Through a qualitative empirical research, we identify the green businesses as a pillar of the sustainable development that supports the evolution of the business environment in a consolidated and balanced pace. The analysis, descriptive-exploratory, is based on synthesis and exemplification and follows the evolution of green business in the last 10 years, at European and national level, starting from the European experiences in the countries that have supported and promoted the mechanisms to strengthen the green business. The results of the study are materialized in a synoptic presentation of the national business environment oriented towards the green business, arguing the need to connect the strategic requirements of the sustainable development, Horizon 2030, with the specific objectives of any form of business: profitability and stability. Thus, we present a general dashboard that groups the most relevant areas in which green businesses in Romania have demonstrated their sustainability, considering both economic and social objectives, as well as the ecological ones. Although the means of promoting such businesses are not very visible, sufficiently transparent or strongly supported, we draw some conclusions which support the hypothesis that the future of a solid and sustainable business environment requires the reconsideration of the economy-environment relationship and promoting the symbiotic perspective on which the green business it is based. This paper discusses a model for the restructuring of national economies for the purpose of achieving optimal growth under conditions of decreased energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The discussion combines input-output and factorial-decomposition models, and applies projected gradient and factor analysis to find the optimal structural changes that serve all three goals. Taking the basis and effect of basin ocean economic linkage development as well as the Yangtze River economic belt as an example, this paper analyzes and calculates the correlation degree. It is pointed out that the correlation between basin economy and marine economy with the correlation between marine tertiary industry and basin tertiary industry are very high. The correlation between marine main industry and basic basin secondary industry are relative high. A diversity of place‐based community economic practices that enact ethical interdependence has long enabled livelihoods in Monsoon Asia. Managed either democratically or coercively, these culturally inflected practices have survived the rise of a cash economy, albeit in modified form, sometimes being co‐opted to state projects. In the modern development imaginary, these practices have been positioned as ‘traditional’, ‘rural’ and largely superseded. But if we read against the grain of modernisation, a largely hidden geography of community economic practices emerges. This paper introduces the project of documenting keywords of place‐based community economies in Monsoon Asia. It extends Raymond William’s cultural analysis of keywords into a non‐western context and situates this discursive approach within a material semiotic framing. The paper has been collaboratively written with co‐researchers across Southeast Asia and represents an experimental mode of scholarship that aims to advance a post‐development agenda. Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging, which calls for an exploration of how to prevent and control pandemics to promote sustainable development. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the digital economy in sustainable development, the relationship between the two, the impacts of the outbreak on economic and social development, and changes in China's digital economy. Design/methodology/approach: The study used the time-series data from 2002 to 2019 and an unconstrained VAR model to examine the relationship between the digital economy and sustainable development before the pandemic. Findings: China's digital economy has promoted the country's sustainable economic and social development; it has advanced rapid economic growth, improved people's living standards, increased efficient utilization of resources, and strengthened environmental protection. Research limitations/implications: Amid the pandemic, China's digital economy developed effectively; it showed strong resilience because of its unique advantages. The digital economy in China has helped the country to control the pandemic in a short period, reduced the risk of supply chain disruption, promoted China's economic growth, and ensured the orderly operation of society. Therefore, countries worldwide are encouraged to prioritize their digital economies. Originality/value: Compared with the extant literature, this study explores the sustainable supply chain in a broader sense in the context of a pandemic, and how the supply chain is influenced by the digital economy. It not only includes the stability, resilience, and viability of the supply chain in economic development but also involves aspects of people's life, resource utilization, and environmental protection. This paper provides an exploratory account of the vital importance of understanding the role of the Planet Earth as a complex system and as reservoir of natural resources essential for human development from local, through national, to global levels. Its analytical framework is the political ecology discourse, which holistically interrogates natural resources, resource use systems, forms of ownership and labour regimes as well as types of commodity chains to underscore the role of power and wealth relations in explaining human well-being and environmental health with a view to equitably allocate scarce resources among and between competing individuals, groups, classes and institutions. Aware that environmental change is inevitable given the forces of both nature and humankind, and that the current unequal terms of trade at the local level, as well as between the developed and developing countries, are in disfavour of smallholders, the paper argues that these should be the burning issues of concern to the new generation of geographers. It advances that a consortium of committed scholars composed of social scientists, on the one hand, and the natural scientists and technologists, on the other, coupled with community-based development partners should be instituted. The paper concludes by advocating citizens' protection against natural resource use systems subjected to extreme socioeconomic-political-ecologic vicissitudes to be treated by the government as human rights issues. Advocates of the green infrastructure (GI) concept claim it offers a progressive planning approach that facilitates synergies between economic growth, environmental conservation and social development. Although widely endorsed by both planning practitioners and academics, little academic literature exists critically evaluating what GI entails or the potential implications of its institutionalisation within planning practice. This paper addresses this deficit by critically examining the interpretation and representation of the GI concept in planning policy. The paper first critically analyses international interpretations of GI. Following this, the particular attributes of GI's interpretation in the Republic of Ireland are investigated. The paper demonstrates how the emergence of GI in Ireland relates to broader debates on attempts to reconcile environmental concerns with development aspirations in planning policy. It is deduced that GI may represent an approach to planning policy formulation wherein habitat conservation initiatives are primarily designed and justified relative to the ecosystems services they are seen to provide to society. The paper also cautions against the risks posed by confining GI debates to the deliberations of technical specialist. The paper concludes by identifying some issues that may arise in the implementation of a GI approach and suggests ways to enhance the potential benefit of the concept's use in spatial planning. The aim of this paper is to examine ecopreneurial initiatives and strategies for ecotourism development through the perception of local communities for two time periods: before and after the establishment of an ecopreneur organisation. A total of 296 survey questionnaires were administered and collected from community members involved in Kabani's ecopreneurship activities, to assess their perception of destination development, economic development, infrastructural development, environmental conservation and sociocultural preservation before and after Kabani was established. Empirical results establish that destination development, economic development, infrastructural development, environmental conservation and sociocultural preservation were found not correlated before the establishment of Kabani. That suggests that there were not many tourism activities before Kabani was established. However, the same factors demonstrated correlation for the period after Kabani was established which demonstrates that ecopreneurial strategies do contribute to ecotourism development. This study concludes that since local communities' perception is favourable for ecotourism after the establishment of ecopreneur organisations such as Kabani, ecopreneurs should adopt additional appropriate strategies towards the sustainable development of ecotourism destinations. In the last decades, as a result of the use of results of the development factors of productions, the premises of a serious ecological imbalance have accumulated at an extremely rapid pace. Since the natural environment has been unable to absorb the shocks from human intervention, ecological crisis broke out. The paper aims to surprise a symbiosis between man and nature, based on the aggravation of environmental problems and growth of global population. It is obvious that the satisfaction of unlimited human needs has been done through the accessing the planet's resources, whose regeneration rateis far inferior to the intensity with wich needs multiply. The basis of this paper is analyzing some of the factors involved in the degradation of the environment, in the context of globalization, mankind has to realize that the health of the planet is most important for the existence of current generations and the ones to come. Measuring and reporting an individual's view and practice on the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) of social equality, economic development and environmental protection for sustainable development remains complete. This paper aims to investigate famers' perceptions of TBL on water use. Zhangye City, a very arid region and the first experimental site for the national initiative of Building the Water-saving Society in China, was selected as the case study area. A questionnaire-based interview approach was adopted to collect farmers' rating of the importance of water for social security, economic development and ecological sustainability from 900 randomly selected farm households in 18 irrigation districts. The results show that 43% of the total respondents rated economic development as the most important, 27.6% chose social security, while 29.4% rated ecological sustainability as the first. It is found that personal characteristics of farmers among a myriad of factors showed most statistically significant correlation with farmers' perception of water use. Some variables, such as age and occupation, influence the farmers' perceptions of all three dimensions or at least two dimensions of water use but in different directions. The interaction between environmental, economic and social factors influences the ecological balance and generates the change of living conditions and those of socio-economic development. One of the essential conditions for building a sustainable economic development is the identification and implementation of active or voluntary instruments to influence economic and social activity towards ensuring their sustainability. In this paper, we intend to introduce the tools used in the process of sustainable development, which have a key role in adopting an environmentally responsible behavior. Technology and science are important determinants in the quality of life of modern man. As conditions and lifestyles change, so will these dimensions change and adapt, taking on an even more dominant role. In order to make human life better, democratic problem-solving and reconciliation with nature, which are closely linked to the knowledge and technologies that this new knowledge brings, is necessary. The paper will give an overview of the basic concepts of integration of modern technology with new ways of being, in the present and in the future. In addition to other revolutions and revolutionary discoveries which recorded every period of the development of civilization, the most important is the technological revolution. Economic progress is directly related to the advancement of science and technology, and since it carries with it environmental issues, the authors advocate the protection and safety of the natural environment in terms of raising environmental awareness and emphasizing the importance of economics, modern technology and ecology. Healthy environment becomes imperative for a healthy future and healthy generations. The sustainability of human civilization must have three dimensions, economic, environmental and social. This paper analyses the link between foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic growth and their subsequent impact on environmental pollution in China. The simultaneous equation method was used with data from 31 provinces in China covering the period between 1995 and 2016. The findings indicate that the effect of FDI on economic growth, industrial structure, and environmental pollution control positively impacts on China's industrial pollution control and environmental conditions, implying that China should encourage foreign capital investments that come with advanced production technology and green production processes. This paper views the concept of natural capital from an economist's perspective. It begins by drawing on historical debates in economics on the nature of capital. These serve to identify central issues to do with the relationship between theory, empirics and method in the way in which the concept of capital is deployed in economic discourse. It is suggested that these have resonance for current discussions of the concept of natural capital. Against this background, the paper then discusses the way in which natural capital figures in the analysis of sustainability, and pinpoints various incoherencies. Finally, it draws on recent analyses of technical innovation as a possible solution to the problem of sustainability. It is suggested that there may be a conflict between narrow path-dependent solutions to the alleged problem, and more open learning-based approaches. This research reviews and analyses the environmental catastrophes in China with regard to its adherence of global environmental policies and practices. The research makes available evidence of the present policy regime and institutions, strategies for curbing emission, environmental legislations and regulations and measures to provide a sustainable environment for the present and future generations. This paper reviewed how the environment is affected by the emissions. The findings revealed that China adheres to global policies and practices. China also receives local and international support in terms of assistance in dealing with environmental challenges. It was also revealed that carbon dioxide was not included in the list of pollutants to be taxed by the environmental protection tax law. In this paper, we analyze the argumentative strategies deployed in the Ecomodernist Manifesto, published in 2015 by a group of leading environmental thinkers. We draw on pragma-dialectics and Perelman's rhetoric to characterize manifesto as a genre of practical argumentation. Our goal is to explore the relation of manifesto as a discursive genre to the argumentative structures and techniques used in the Ecomodernist Manifesto. We therefore take into scrutiny the elements of practical argumentation employed in the manifesto and describe the polylogical strategies of dissociation in negotiating the ecological value of nature and the modernist value of progress. Community-based ecotourism enterprises (CEEs) are emerging as mechanisms for integrated and sustainable conservation of wildlife in developing countries. As such, they are substantially supported by local and international organizations promoting integrated conservation and development. However, the performance of CEEs remains inadequate. This paper evaluates the influence of quality improvement on the performance of CEEs, from a total quality management (TQM) perspective. Data were collected from three CEEs neighboring Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda. The findings revealed critical TQM practices for CEEs’ performance, including training, benchmarking, employee empowerment, performance measurement and adapting the TQM philosophy in the CEE’s vision. In addition, this study makes a new contribution to the application of TQM in small and medium organizations. It identifies benchmarking and employee empowerment as two new dimensions of TQM practices, which are critical for the performance of small and medium organizations. To improve the performance of CEEs, we call for an integrated approach in the application of the proposed TQM practices at every stage of CEEs’ functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper defines a sustainable development path as a balanced growth path with environmental conservation. In the framework of endogenous growth theory, it is known that a sustainable development path is optimal only if the following three conditions are satisfied: (1) the engine of economic growth is clean; (2) the assimilation capacity of the environment is high enough to endure the increasing environmental load with economic growth; and (3) the population has an egalitarian propensity with the elasticity of the marginal utility of consumption that is greater than or equal to one. While all of these three conditions are intuitively plausible, there are distinctions between the first two and the last one: the former can be obtained by our endeavors, whereas the latter concerns preference that is endowed rather than obtained. We show that this preference constraint can be relaxed if the production technology satisfies the condition that the elasticity of transformation to the production factor and the environmental service, after appropriate monotone transformation, is greater than one. The paper quantitatively analyzed the time variation characteristics of economic and utilization of water resource coordination development in Beijing, and built an index system of water resource environment and economic system and a model of the coordination degree evaluation. The result indicate that the level of utilization of water resource and economic coordinated development showed a trend of rapid development and had been transited from the imbalanced, recessionary type to the barely-coordinated type. In the space dimension, the coordinated development degree of the 16 districts have obvious regional differences. Then the paper raises the following policy recommendations: Adopt appropriate development strategy under the guidance of green development thought; Make clear the city orientation; Make overall plans for regional development; Protect the ecological environment; Improve the public participation, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win situation between economy and ecological environment in the capital city. Historically, the extraction of mineral reserves has always resulted in varying degrees of environmental resource degradation and social impacts, including displacement, all across the globe. Whilst acknowledging that no mining can be entirely free of all negative impacts, there is sufficient ground to suggest that all-round performance on this subject in the mining sector needs to be urgently and substantially improved in the country. This paper emphasizes (in the Asian context) the fact that sustainable development and environmental conservation require simultaneous consideration to be given to the economic, social, political and environmental aspects of policy formulation. Governance, centralization and decentralization of economic decision-making and property rights must be taken into account in considering such issues. There is at present a strong focus (partly on environmental grounds) on decentralization of economic decision-making and the empowerment of local communities has been felt rigorously and has evidence of such decentralization in Asia, especially in India. This paper is some sort of a process to evaluate the trend which has against the adage "think globally, act locally". Because of global international and interregional ramifications of local or regional decisions, mechanisms have to be sought to reconcile local and regional interests with the interests of the wider community, especially in environmental matters. Major environmental externalities from local and regional economic activities to wider communities are being illustrated in the Asian context concentrating on India. Environmental concerns raised by India's energy sector are given particular consideration because coal use in India has many serious consequences for air pollution, often over wide geographical areas. The environmental protection represents an important subject in international debates, being accentuated by the alert rhythm of economic development and the higher demands of the current consumer generations. In general, it can be claimed that the most developed countries are producing the largest quantities of waste and pollutants and are consuming large quantities of energy and natural resources. The impact these countries have upon the natural environment is strong and destructive. Therefore, it can be remarked that the industrialization level is inversely proportional with the environmental state, which is getting worse by the year: reduced timbered areas, agricultural soil degradation, a thinner ozone layer, numerous extinct plant and animal species, accentuated greenhouse effect, etc. Affecting the natural environment has severe repercussions upon the quality of life, manifesting itself through water, soil and atmospheric pollution. Paper submitted October 2012; revised paper accepted December 2012. Strategies to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) are being pursued in numerous developing countries. Proponents contest that REDD mechanisms could deliver sustainable development by contributing to both environmental protection and economic development, particularly in poor forest communities. However, among the challenges to REDD and natural resource management more generally is the need to develop a comprehensive understanding of cross-sectoral linkages and address how they impact the pursuit of sustainable development. Drawing on an exploratory case study of Ghana, this paper aims to outline the linkages between the forestry and minerals sectors. It argues that contemporary debates give incommensurate attention to the reclamation of large-scale mine sites located in forest reserves and neglect to consider more nuanced links, which characterise the forestry-mining nexus in Ghana. A review of key stakeholders further elucidates the complex networks that characterise these linkages and highlights the important role of traditional authorities in governing across sectors. If the multiple roles of local resource users and traditional authorities continue to be neglected in policy mechanisms, schemes such as REDD will continue to fall short of achieving sustainable development. The idea of sustainable development is without doubt the most used phrase, with reference to environment in the last half century. Sustainable development has been defined in many ways, but the most frequently quoted definition is from Our Common Future, also known as the Brundtland Report. Sustainable development - the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs - has continued to evolve as that of protecting the world's resources while it's true agenda is to control the world's resources. Environmentally sustainable economic growth refers to economic development that meets the needs of all actors involved without leaving future generations with fewer natural resources than those we enjoy today. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the durable form of contemporary development as a stable relationship between human activities and the natural world, which does not diminish the prospects for future generations to enjoy a quality of life at least as good as our own. The idea of green economic growth, synonym to the prevalent concept of 'Sustainable Development', is not new, many cultures over the course of human history have recognized the need for harmony between the environment, society and economy. Environmental advocacy in East Asia takes place in a context where there are few well-funded professional advocacy organizations, no viable green parties, and governments that are highly pro-business. In this advocacy-hostile environment, what strategies are environmental organizations using to promote better environmental outcomes? Using an original database of environmental organizations and interviews with activists and officials throughout the region, this paper investigates which strategies are most common, and compares them to the advocacy strategies found in the United States. It finds, perhaps surprisingly, that (a) environmental organizations across East Asia employ similar advocacy strategies, even though they are operating in very different political conditions, and (b) the strategies most favoured in East Asia are also the strategies most often utilized in the United States. It then argues that new theories of advocacy should be developed to pay closer attention to certain actors (academics and artists), and particular processes (organizational networking, government collaboration, and culture-making), that appear to play important roles in advocacy in countries around the world, irrespective of political context.
