Fire regimes are changing dramatically worldwide due to climate change, habitat conversion, and the suppression of Indigenous landscape management. Although there has been extensive work on plant responses to fire, including their adaptations to withstand fire and long-term effects of fire on plant communities, less is known about animal responses to fire. Ecologists lack a conceptual framework for understanding behavioural responses to fire, which can hinder wildlife conservation and management. Here, we integrate cue-response sensory ecology and predator-prey theory to predict and explain variation in if, when and how animals react to approaching fire. Inspired by the literature on prey responses to predation risk, this framework considers both fire-naïve and fire-adapted animals and follows three key steps: vigilance, cue detection and response. We draw from theory on vigilance tradeoffs, signal detection, speed-accuracy tradeoffs, fear generalization, neophobia and adaptive dispersal. We discuss how evolutionary history with fire, but also other selective pressures, such as predation risk, should influence animal behavioural responses to fire. The White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus) is listed as a state threatened species in Texas. It occupies prairies and savannas of the Gulf Coastal Plain, but also the barrier islands, many of which arc exposed to rapid development and other human disturbances. This is a concern as White-tailed Hawks are known to be highly sensitive to nesting disturbance. We examined the breeding ecology of White-tailed Hawks on 3 Texas barrier islands with low (Matagorda Island) and high (Mustang and North Padre Islands) human disturbance. We found nearest-neighbor distances of nesting pairs were lowest on the island with low human disturbance (1.9 [+ or -] 0.9 km) compared to those on islands with high disturbance (2.6 [+ or -] 0.8 to 5.6 [+ or -] 3.8 km). The highest and lowest daily survival rates for nests occurred on the low human disturbance island in 2006 (0.9954) and 2007 (0.9876). The number of fledglings produced per nesting attempt was significantly lower in 2007 compared to 2006 on the low human disturbance island (P = 0.024), but there was no difference in productivity between years on the high human disturbance islands (P = 0.845). The lower density but larger fledgling numbers in the high human disturbance area may be a result of fewer White-tailed Hawks having adapted to human disturbance, but that lower density allowing for increased territory sizes and wider access to prey resources which, in turn, may have yielded increased productivity. In contrast the low human disturbance areas appear to be saturated and productivity may be limited by density-dependent factors. If White-tailed Hawks are to be conserved on the barrier islands, a better understanding of the species' tolerance and adaptability to human disturbance is needed, and a balance will need to be found between continued anthropogenic development and maintenance of adequate foraging and nesting habitat. Ocupa praderas y sabanas de la llanura costera del Golfo, pero tambien las islas barrera, muchas de las cuales estan expuestas a un rapido desarrollo y otras amenazas humanas. Esto es preocupante, ya que se sabe que los gavilanes coliblanos son muy sensibles a las perturbaciones durante la epoca de anidacion. Examinamos la ecologia reproductiva del gavilan coliblanco en 3 islas barrera de Texas con baja (isla Matagorda) y alta (islas Mustang y North Padre) perturbacion humana. Encontramos que las distancias entre vecinos mas cercanos de las parejas reproductoras eran menores en la isla con baja perturbacion humana (1.9 [+ or -] 0.9 km) en comparacion con las de las islas con alta perturbacion (2.6 [+ or -] 0.8 - 5.6 [+ or -] 3.8 km). Las tasas de supervivencia diaria de nidos mas alta y mas baja se dieron en la zona de nidos de baja perturbacion humana en 2006 (0.995) y 2007 (0.987). El numero de volantones producidos por intento de nidificacion fue significativamente inferior en 2007 en comparacion con 2006 en la zona de baja perturbacion humana (P = 0.024), pero no hubo diferencias en la productividad entre anos en la zona de alta perturbacion humana (P = 0.845). La menor densidad, pero el mayor numero de pollos volantones en la zona de alta perturbacion humana, puede deberse a que un menor numero de gavilanes coliblancos se ha adaptado a la perturbacion humana aumentando el tamano de su territorio, lo que refleja un mayor acceso a los recursos de presa que, a su vez, puede haber dado lugar a una mayor productividad. No single studies on the Burmese Red Serows, a little known bovid to date yet considered as nationally endangered species, have been conducted in Bangladesh. As part of a systematic wildlife inventory and monitoring project, this study utilized 48 camera traps to elucidate their occurrence, activity pattern and possible sympatric association with other artiodactyls species inhabiting Baraiyadhala National Park. The study found 25 independent serow events with relative abundance index (RAI) of 0.89. The number of individuals seems low, but this is by far the country's stronghold population. The Red Serows are mostly nocturnal and showed moderate temporal activity with barking dear (∆1 = 0.59) and wild boar (∆1 = 0.62) in this area. Anthropogenic pressures due to tourists (RAI = 4.8) and poachers (RAI = 1.7) were highly evident and must have negative impact on overall wildlife of the national park. The study suggests similar studies in adjacent protected area (Hazarikhil Wildlife Sanctuary), habitat protection and restoration program, and awareness raising program targeting forest dependent communities for long term conservation of this species. Wetlands belong to the most endangered habitats in the world, and animals and plants occurring there are subjects of nature conservation efforts worldwide. Several species of bees and wasps have been comprehensively studied in recent years, but the biology and ecology of wetland-associated species remain largely enigmatic. The results showed that some of these species can be good bioindicators, useful in nature conservation. Hylaeus pectoralis is a small wetland-associated bee that is dependent on the presence of its nesting resource, cigar galls formed by the frit fly Lipara lucens on stems of common reed. We studied the presence of this bee species between 2011 and 2023, both in near-natural and anthropogenic habitats. This bee requires the presence of terrestrial reed with reed galls and occurs nearly exclusively in long-lasting localities of near-natural character with wet meadows rich in flowering plants. Our results showed that H. pectoralis requires mosaic sites with reed beds combined with wet meadows. The proportion of wet meadows in the H. pectoralis localities is more prominent than in localities where H. pectoralis was absent. The bee is polylectic, and we enlarged the number of pollen sources to plants of 22 families—the collected pollen was from plants of many habitats, including plants of wet meadows and aquatic plants. Though recording of H. pectoralis in the locality is simple using the rearing from collected reed galls, this ecologically sensitive species can be used as an essential bioindicator for the quality of wetland habitats and the studies of the continuity of the habitats. Implications for insect conservation: The presence of the mosaic of wet meadows with flowering plants, small reed beds, reed margins, and small water reservoirs is necessary not only for Hylaeus pectoralis but also for other biota of wetlands. Mowing of reed margins should be implemented to only a part of the habitat. It is well-established that cities need nature for critical ecosystem services--from storing carbon, to reducing temperatures, to mitigating stormwater--and there is growing momentum to seek out strategies for how these services can intersect with urban design and planning efforts. Social scientists and conservation planners increasingly point to urban residents' need to breathe fresh air, encounter the natural world, and have room to play. It is less obvious, perhaps, whether nature needs cities in order to thrive. The evidence from both urban planning and conservation planning is increasingly "yes." As changes in land use and land cover sweep the planet, cities are becoming important refugia for certain wildlife populations. In recent years, urban planning has embraced the concept of "green infrastructure" as a way to embed green space across metropolitan landscapes to draw on the inherent benefits nature provides to cities, as well as to create habitat for wildlife. We explore this evolving view of cities and nature in the fields of urban and conservation planning. We argue the time is ripe to bring these worlds together, and, using our empirical work, establish that cities matter for monarch butterflies, other pollinators, and at-risk wildlife species. This study aims to determine the current distribution of Anatololacerta anatolica by using known locations and then to model possible changes in the species distribution against the climate change scenarios, compare the current and the expected future distributions of the species, and provide information for conservation activities. The current distribution of Anatolian Rock Lizard was determined by field trips made during 2019 and 2020. The coordinates of 79 GPS data were obtained from the field trips, and 78 GPS data were collected from the literature survey. Totally, 157 GPS data of Anatololacerta anatolica species were eliminated. IPCC representative Carbon Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios (RCP-2.6, 4.5, 6, 8.5) for 2020, 2050 and 2070. Nineteen different bioclimatic variables were obtained from the WorldClim database, and the current and future distributions of the species were modeled using ecological niche modeling. The results of the models were converted into polygon data, and then their surface areas, centroids (the center of mass or center of gravity), displacement of centroids, and their movement directions were calculated and compared. Out of 19 bioclimatic variables, Isothermality, Temperature Seasonality, Minimum Temperature of Coldest Month, Mean Temperature of Wettest Quarter, and Precipitation of Driest Month were found to be the contributing factors explaining the distribution of the species. The current distribution model's Area Under Curve (AUC) value has an explanatory value of 0,901. Significant shifts up to 100 km change in centroids and 550 km change in peripheral regions are expected to happen mainly in northern and northeastern areas. At the same time, it loses some regions located in the south and western parts of Turkey. Nevertheless, such shifts also depend on many other ecological factors besides climate. Genetic monitoring plays a crucial role in the conservation management of amphibians due to their vulnerability to habitat changes. Traditional biodiversity monitoring methods, such as trapping and morphological identification, are being complemented by advanced technologies that enhance species identification sensitivity and monitoring capabilities. Genetic resource availability is essential for effective amphibian biodiversity assessment and monitoring. This study aims to evaluate the current state of genetic resources and their comprehensiveness for amphibian biomonitoring and conservation in Malaysia. The study focused on seven targeted mitochondrial DNA loci, and data regarding these loci were obtained from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. The results showed that 69.8% of amphibian species in Malaysia had genetic data available for at least one or more of the targeted genes, with the 16S gene being the most widely represented. However, only 12.1% of threatened species and 61.2% of endemic species had accessible genetic information. Biological utilization was identified as the primary threat to amphibian species in Malaysia, accounting for 27.0% of recorded threats. These findings highlight the need for further improvement in achieving comprehensive genetic resource information for amphibians in Malaysia. Advancements in enpromisesntal DNA (eDNA) analysis and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies hold promise in enhancing efforts to conserve amphibian diversity. A study of avifauna was conducted for a period of four months i.e., January 2018 to April 2018, of some selected lakes of Tumakuru city, Karnataka, India. The aim of present study was to document the diversity and ecological status of avifauna of these selected lakes. During the study period, 47 species of wetland birds belonging to different orders and families were observed and recorded. These three lakes have shown variation in terms of diversity, occurrence, richness and evenness. The highest diversity was recorded from Amanikere lake while as low diversity from Melekote lake. Human disturbance and colonization of non-hydrophytes was observed as a major factor in avifaunal distribution. The present study has shown the occurrence of 47 species, but most of the species were common among three selected lakes which made about 56% as common, 5% as rare, abundant and occasional species with 39%, respectively. Out of 47 bird species, 12 species were carnivorous, 12 insectivorous, 12 piscivorous, 6 omnivorous and 5 herbivorous. Three globally threatened species were recorded, such as White necked stork (Ciconia episcopus), Painted stork (Mycteria leucocephalo) and Steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis), which are listed in the Vulnerable, near Threatened category and Endangered species, respectively (IUCN, 2015). Hence, the study shows that these lakes are the habitat for globally threatened bird species and that appropriate conservation measures should be taken to save this avifaunal diversity. Abstract Crop raiding and livestock predation negatively impact the views of the local community towards wildlife conservation. Farmers across the African continent, especially those in rural regions, incur financial losses as a result of crop raiding and livestock depredation. The sustainability of the forest relies heavily on comprehending the essential connection between a harmonious park-people relationship and the coexistence of humans and wildlife. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the predation of livestock, the raiding of crops, and the attitudes of the community towards wildlife in the Mankira Forest located in southwest Ethiopia. This particular area has been lacking in scientific research, making it crucial to conduct this assessment. The data were collected between November 2021 and September 2022 via a structured questionnaire. This study used a sample of 241 randomly selected respondents from the four villages, and responses were compared using chi-square tests. Pearson correlation was also used to test the relationship between the distance of farmland and the extent of crop raiding. The majority of the respondents (95%) reported the presence of crop raiding and livestock predation in the area. These losses were caused by the Papio anubis (39%), the Chlorocebus aethiops (24.1%), the Hystrix cristata (15.3%), the Canis aures (58.3%), and the Crocutacrocuta (29.5%). Maize stood out as the crop type most susceptible to crop raiders. Most of the respondents (56.7%) had a negative attitude towards wildlife conservation. The artificially created Lake Pampulha, within the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, lacks detailed information about its freshwater mollusks, representing a challenge for the assessment and conservation of this ecosystem. In this study, conducted during June and August 2021, we collected specimens on four different occasions and at five sampling points around the lake, using different sampling equipment, such as a shovel and a scoop. During these collections, we identified, enumerated and measured 1538 species of mollusks and additionally examined the presence of trematode larvae. We identified twelve species of fresh water bivalves and gastropods: Biomphalaria straminea, Biomphalaria kuhniana, Biomphalaria occidentalis, Drepanotrema cimex, Pomacea maculata, Stenophysa marmorata, Physa acuta, Gundlachia ticaga, Melanoides tuberculata, Pseudosuccinea columella, Omalonyx matheroni and Corbicula largillierti. Echinostome and strigeocercaria types of larval trematodes were detected in B. straminea. Notably, some species of mollusks have not previously been recorded at Lake Pampulha. The analyses revealed differences in the composition and abundance of species, highlighting the higher number of mollusk species in areas more impacted by human actions. This study expands our understanding of mollusk diversity at Lake Pampulha, and provides valuable data for longitudinal comparisons of water quality and considerations of the conservation of native species. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of choosing appropriate sampling equipment, depending on the research objectives. The presence of invasive species of medical and veterinary relevance as intermediate hosts of parasites reinforces the need for efficient environmental protection strategies to preserve this artificial, aquatic environment widely used by the local population and by tourists. Across the world, increasing urbanization is leading to more frequent encounters between humans and wildlife. The resulting cohabitation promotes new human–wildlife dynamics in cities and requires innovative approaches for coping with wildlife in habitats that are not conventionally considered as suitable. Here we examined how leopards (Panthera pardus) acclimate to the urban environment in Mumbai, India, and influence human politics through their presence, adaptability, and diverse relationships with humans and nonhumans. Building on perspectives from political ecology and more‐than‐human geography, we show how leopards may thwart the outcomes of wildlife conservation and management and also catalyze transitions toward approaches that foster coexistence. We reveal the political role that leopards play in Mumbai by examining the many ways in which they influence power dynamics among humans. The problem of optimising the location of crops/plots in protected areas, national parks, farmland or forests involves trying to reconcile their proper functioning with nature conservation, the preservation of unique ecosystems or sustainable development. Such areas are crucial for the preservation of biodiversity and wildlife. This paper examines and discusses the impact of land consolidation in rural areas using GIS (Geographic Information System) tools. It performs a series of network analyses to determine the real distances (following the road network) and linear distances (rectilinear distances) between habitats and farmland. A tool was also developed to automate this process. The results obtained were visualised using map compositions, tables and graphs. The implemented project had a significant beneficial effect on the change in the land structure in the analysed village. Gut microbiome studies based on fecal samples can non-invasively reflect the survival and health status of endangered species. This study presents the first characterization of the gut microbiome in the semi-wild population of the critically endangered Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica), unveiling the existence of two distinct enterotypes within the semi-wild Saiga: the Oscillospiraceae UCG-005 enterotype and the Arthrobacter enterotype. These enterotypes show significant differences in microbiome diversity, composition, and predicted functions. The Arthrobacter enterotype has lower alpha diversity, fewer short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing bacteria, more potential pathogens, lower energy metabolism and higher lipid metabolism abundance. The findings imply that Saiga with the Arthrobacter enterotype have lower energy utilization efficiency and higher disease risks, particularly for obesity. Microbial correlation network analysis indicates SCFAs-producing bacteria play a key role in the formation of these enterotypes. This suggests that next-generation probiotics, primarily composed of SCFAs-producing bacteria, could be used to regulate and improve the health of the Saiga. Additionally, the similarity of the enterotype associated with a healthier survival state to that of wild counterparts suggests that incorporating gut microbiome monitoring into the key indicators for the reintroduction of endangered species could be significant for wildlife conservation and management.

The Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is on the verge of extinction. Overuse and habitat loss have decimated the pangolin population across China. Understanding the habitat status of pangolins is a prerequisite for conservation, but this understanding is lacking due to difficulties in surveying and monitoring this species. This study used the MaxEnt model to analyze the current habitat distribution of Chinese pangolins by summarizing distribution records for China from 2010–2022. Moderate- and high-quality habitat of Chinese pangolins covers about 554,025 km2, mainly in 10 provinces in East and South China, together with a small area in Yunnan and Tibet. The majority of pangolin habitats (89.32%) were distributed in the forests of low mountains and hills; only 8.92% of habitats overlap with protected areas. Prey abundance and climate are key factors affecting pangolin distribution. Land-use changes leading to habitat encroachment and/or affecting prey abundance, and climate change may underlie their shrinking distribution. Considering that the current protected area coverage of Chinese pangolin habitat is low, we recommend adjusting or expanding the boundaries of protected areas to improve coverage. The focus should be on strengthening the population and habitat management of Chinese pangolin outside protected areas. Within pangolin ranges, conservation can be achieved through improving the education of community residents, implementing stronger community economic development policies, replacing lost logging income from residents’ private forest land with economic compensation, and strictly regulating the location of infrastructure and residential area construction. The goal of these four key actions is to increase the public’s awareness and enthusiasm for pangolins, reduce the willingness of community residents to hunt pangolin, and prevent the destruction of and encroachment into existing pangolin habitat.

Abstract Accurate information on wildlife occurrence in anthropogenic landscapes is essential to develop effective conservation measures. Monitoring multiple mammal species in heterogeneous landscapes can be challenging because of the diversity of land‐uses and species behaviors. Therefore, different monitoring methods are better adapted to different contexts. We compared data obtained from camera traps with data gathered through an online survey to document the presence of mammal species in mosaic landscapes of the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve in South Africa. The survey detected the same 15 species as the camera traps as well as the additional common duiker. Both methods effectively detected most large mammal species, whereas results were less consistent for smaller species and carnivores. Combining the two methods enabled us to produce more robust estimates of species absence and confirm species presence reported by survey respondents. In less disturbed areas, respondents with good ecological knowledge were effective at monitoring mammal species, while extending the spatial coverage of the study. Bearing in mind the limitations of each method, camera traps and an online survey could complement each other if combined. Together, they can provide a more comprehensive understanding of mammal communities in anthropogenic landscapes, increasing both spatial coverage and the number of species sightings.

The effects of grazing on wildlife have received considerable attention. Depending on factors such as its intensity and duration, grazing can impact higher-level species along the food chain through competition for available resources with wild herbivores. However, relatively few studies have investigated whether there are tipping points at which grazing intensity begins to seriously impact wildlife. In particular, studies that assess the impact of overgrazing on food chains that include carnivores remain scarce. We developed a time dynamic, age-structured model for the wild ungulates-Amur tiger trophic chain, including cattle grazing as a disturbance. We explored 1) the impact of cattle grazing intensity on the long-term behaviour of the wildlife population; 2) the effect of demographic parameters on wildlife population viability; and 3) the temporal dynamic impact of periods of heavy grazing on the population trajectory. Our results showed that increasing cattle density reaches a tipping point, triggering a rapid and significant shift in wildlife population size. Below the tipping point, wildlife can coexist with grazing livestock; when cattle density exceeds the tipping point, wild ungulate and tiger populations move towards extinction. In the case of heavy grazing, the dynamics of the wild ungulate population was more affected by its intensity, and the dynamics of the Amur tiger population was more affected by its duration. Our model and results suggest that theoretically wildlife conservation and cattle production can coexist but that serious regime shifts in wildlife populations may occur if grazing intensity exceeds a tipping point. These findings provide new insights useful for developing policies related to balancing livestock and wildlife conservation.

Abstract The intestinal microbiota, an invisible organ supporting a host's survival, has essential roles in metabolism, immunity, growth, and development. Since intestinal microbiota influences a host's biology, application of such data to wildlife conservation has gained interest. There are standard protocols for studying the human intestinal microbiota, but no equivalent for wildlife. A major challenge is sampling the intestinal microbiota in an effective, unbiased way. Fecal samples are a popular proxy for intestinal microbiota because collection is non‐invasive and allows for longitudinal sampling. Yet it is unclear whether the fecal microbiota is representative of the intestinal microbiota. In wildlife studies, research on the sampling methodology is limited. In this study focusing on amphibians, we characterize and compare the microbiota (small intestine, large intestine, and feces) of two Hong Kong stream‐dwelling frog species: Lesser Spiny Frog (Quasipaa exilispinosa) and Hong Kong Cascade Frog (Amolops hongkongensis). We found that the microbiota of both species are similar at the level of phylum and family, but diverge at the level of genus. When we assessed the performance of fecal microbiota in representing the intestinal microbiota in these two species, we found that (1) the microbiota of the small and large intestine differs significantly, (2) feces are not an appropriate proxy of either intestinal sections, and (3) a set of microbial taxa significantly differs between sample types. Our findings raise caution equating fecal and intestinal microbiota in stream‐dwelling frogs. Sampling feces can avoid sacrifice of an animal, but researchers should avoid over‐extrapolation and interpret results carefully.

Habitat fragmentation poses a considerable threat to global biodiversity loss, making the study of landscape connectivity and ecological networks essential in an ever-changing environment. Of particular importance is the assessment of network dynamics, as it can provide invaluable specific insights for conservation and management strategies. This research proposes a framework to assess variations in ecological networks and identify conservation priorities. In this framework, we applied multi-methods to collect species occurrence and create resistance surfaces based on habitat suitability from the MaxEnt model. By using diverse approaches such as the least-cost model, circuit model, and centrality mapper, we identified ecological corridors between core areas and determined their centrality. Furthermore, we employed multi-level metrics to measure changes within ecological networks. Additionally, we introduced two indices to evaluate human disturbance faced by core habitats. We proposed a novel method that considers core habitats’ centrality and human disturbance to identify conservation priorities. Specifically, using the Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus) as a case species, we examined the variations in ecological network and human disturbance across 2000–2020 in Western Yunnan, China. Our study revealed overall improvement with local losses in the availability and connectivity of black bear habitats in Western Yunnan from 2000 to 2020. However, the core habitats have been facing an escalating human disturbance. Our approach provides a framework for assessing dynamic ecological networks that can be applied to diverse species, landscapes, and scenarios. Furthermore, this approach helps guide conservation and management to promote human-wildlife coexistence in a changing environment.

Assessing local people's understanding of the consequences of unsustainable bushmeat-related activities on conservation is an important step toward developing effective solutions to decrease unlawful hunting activities. The current study investigated the knowledge regarding the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of illegal bushmeat activities among villagers adjacent to western Nyerere National Park Tanzania. The two terminologies i.e., “hunting” and “trade” were collectively used herein as “bushmeat trade”. We collected data from 261 households and 24 key informants using a semi-structured questionnaire and an interview guide, respectively. Results show that 84% of local residents know that bushmeat trade directly threatens wildlife by reducing the population of hunted species. Nearly half of the respondents also appreciate the benefits of wildlife conservation. Regarding the trend of bushmeat trade in the study area, the majority (80%) of the respondents stated that the activity is decreasing. Moreover, the study revealed that the knowledge variation regarding the impacts of bushmeat trade is significantly influenced by education level, age and proximity to the park boundaries. Interventions aimed at addressing the illegal bushmeat trade should consider demographic factors and ensure that conservation programmes are extended to both nearby and distant villages from the park boundaries for enhanced and impactful results.

A restrictive approach in managing Protected Areas (PA) is often attributed to 'Western' ideas of nature. This view claims that national elites embraced Western ideas of nature—which supposedly has no place for humans—to produce pristine wilderness in PAs by banning grazing, fishing, and foraging inside them. This article foregrounds cultural politics as an alternate driver of creating wilderness in the global south. The article explores the history of conservation of the Greater One-horned Rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) in Kaziranga Wild Life Sanctuary (KWLS), the previous avatar of Kaziranga National Park in Assam, India. It shows that Assamese cultural politics pertaining to the rhino not only augmented the Assam Forest Department's (FD) enduring efforts to sanitise KWLS from human activities but also paved the way for the militarised protection of the rhino, which in turn, reinforced wilderness. By the late 1960s, when a larger debate about wildlife conservation surfaced in India, developments in KWLS subtly informed exclusionary conservation in other national parks and tiger reserves.

Species of the genus Pseudoplatystoma, the long-whiskered catfishes, are important in commercial and recreational fisheries in South America, and some species have become key to regional aquaculture. Some species of the genus are under pressure due to overfishing and the negative impacts of dams. Six questions are asked in this review: (i) What species are in the genus, and where are they distributed? (ii) What are the life histories and ecologies of Pseudoplatystoma species? (iii) What are the patterns of somatic growth for these species? (iv) What is known about the biomass, production, and population dynamics of Pseudoplatystoma? (v) What is the geographic distribution of genetic variation within Pseudoplatystoma species? (vi) What are the threats to the conservation of these species? The taxonomy of the genus currently includes eight species, respectively, distributed over the Orinoco, Amazon, Paraná, and São Francisco basins. Pseudoplatystoma catfishes typically exhibit longitudinal migrations for reproduction and lateral migration for feeding, but these patterns may vary among populations. The size of the first maturation of these catfishes varies between 57 cm to 82 cm in total length. Five of the eight species spawn during the rising water season. Pseudoplatystoma species can grow to about 130 cm in total length and 100 Kg in weight and live until 30 years of age, depending upon the species. Biomass production and population dynamics of these catfishes have not yet been fully described. Their life-history characteristics indicate that they are periodic strategists with associated population recruitment dynamics. Population genetic patterning varies among Pseudoplatystoma species, with some degree of homing behavior and genetic differentiation among populations, indicating the need for management by applying the Management Unit and perhaps Evolutionary Significant Unit concepts. The main threats to the persistence of these catfishes are overfishing and alterations in and obstruction of river flow due to the construction of hydropower dams. After synthesizing existing information on species of the genus Pseudoplatystoma, we offer suggestions for future research to fill critical gaps in the knowledge of this group. We summarise all known data on the liverwort Mannia triandra (Scop.) Grolle in Montenegro. This species was previously only known from literature. During our fieldwork between 2016 and 2022, we were able to detect it in seven parts of the country at 18 localities. It occurs mainly in the southwestern part of the country, at altitudes between 40 and 1720 m above sea level, mainly in small caves or crevices in north, north-east and east exposure. These are mostly small populations with only a few individuals. Due to this increase in recent occurrences, Montenegro has a great responsibility for the conservation of this rare species, which is protected and endangered throughout Europe. However, following the IUCN criteria, we estimate that Mannia triandra should be considered endangered (VU) in Montenegro, too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Successful conservation efforts have led to recent increases of large mammals such as European bison Bison bonasus, moose Alces alces and grey wolf Canis lupus and their return to former habitats in central Europe. While embraced by some, the recovery of these species is a controversial topic and holds potential for human‐wildlife conflicts. Involving the public has been suggested to be an effective method for monitoring wildlife and mitigating associated conflicts. To assess two interrelated prerequisites for engaging people in Citizen Science (CS)—knowledge of returning species and respondents' readiness to participate in CS activities for monitoring and managing these species—we conducted a survey (questionnaire) in two wildlife parks located in different states of Germany. Based on 472 complete questionnaires, we developed generalized linear models to understand how sociodemographic variables and exposure to the species affected visitors' knowledge of each species, and to investigate if sociodemographic variables and knowledge influenced the likelihood of visitors to participate in CS activities. Almost all visitors were aware of the returning wolf population, while knowledge and awareness about bison and moose were significantly lower. Knowledge of the two herbivores differed geographically (higher knowledge of moose in the north‐eastern state), possibly indicating a positive association between exposure to the species and knowledge. However, models generally performed poorly in predicting knowledge about wildlife, suggesting that such specific knowledge is insufficiently explained by sociodemographic variables. Our model, which explained stated willingness in CS indicated that younger participants and those with higher knowledge scores in the survey were more willing to engage in CS activities. Overall, our analyses highlight how exposure to large mammals, knowledge about wildlife and human demographics are interrelated—insights that are helpful for effectively recruiting citizen scientists for wildlife conservation. Anguillid eels are near globally distributed catadromous fishes with marine spawning areas and inshore and inland growth areas in both lotic (rivers, estuaries) and lentic (lakes, ponds, lagoons) water bodies. As predators, anguillid eels play an important ecological role in both marine and freshwater systems, and several species are harvested commercially for food. However, some of the more widely distributed species have undergone severe declines in recruitment and their population status is now of significant concern. Given the multiple and lengthy migrations undertaken by anguillid eels, understanding of the drivers of movement is fundamental for species conservation and management. Yet, despite the importance of lentic systems to their ecology, most studies on anguillid eel movement have been conducted in lotic systems. Given that key influences on eel migration in lotic water bodies, such as fluctuations in flow and water temperature, may be minimised in lentic environments, the transferability of findings between lotic and lentic systems cannot be assumed. A systematic map was constructed to synthesise current knowledge on the extrinsic and intrinsic drivers of anguillid eel movement in lentic systems. The current state of knowledge of the drivers of eel movement in lentic systems is presented and compared to the relatively well-understood drivers of movement in lotic systems. We also discuss current knowledge gaps and limitations, and identify key future research requirements to inform the management and conservation of anguillid eels in understudied lentic systems. The presented research was conducted during 2019–2022 in south and southeast Kazakhstan to document the species richness, distribution, and ecology of charophytes (Characeae) as a first step towards to estimate the need for species protection. Across the 54 sites, we found ten species and one variety. Chara vulgaris Linnaeus and C. contraria A.Braun ex Kützing were the most common species, followed by C. canescens Loiseleur, C. kirghisorum C. F. Lessing, C. tomentosa Linnaeus, C. dominii J. Vilhelm, C. globata W. Migula, Nitellopsis obtusa (Desvaux) J. Groves, and Nitella hyalina (De Candolle) C. Agardh. The list of localities for each species was compiled. The distribution of each taxon was mapped in relations to the ecoregions studied. The two most frequent species were found in a wide spectrum of ecoregions, whereas all other species occurred in only a few regions in Kazakhstan. The Kaskelen River Valley had the most sampled sites with the highest number of co-occurring species (up to five together). Statistical maps were plotted in attempt to outline key environmental variables explaining the distribution of each species. A comparison of species and environmental variables distribution maps lets us assume that C. vulgaris prefers low altitude habitats with higher water temperatures, organic enrichments, and color, but low oxygen and pH. Other species prefer clear, alkaline, organically unpolluted, and well-oxygenated waters in lowland habitats. The redundancy detrended analysis (RDA) defined pH and altitude as negative factors for Nitellopsis obtusa whereas an increase in water temperature was positive. Altitude and water temperatures affected Chara contraria positively while altitude negatively influenced the rare species: Chara tomentosa, C. kirghisorum, and C. dominii. The matK sequences were obtained for C. contraria and C. vulgaris to confirm their identity according to morphological traits and to compare populations of C. gymnophylla and C. vulgaris from an arid region in Israel. Our data allowed for the preparation of a tentative red list from the study region. One species was recognized as endangered, four species and one variety as vulnerable, and two species as least concern. Over the past three decades community-based natural resources management (CBNRM) has sought to address the concurrent needs of economic development and ecological protection at the local level, but there is often strong divergence between development and conservation interests and successes. In particular, CBNRM has not always led to expected socioeconomic outcomes, while information of its impact on human well-being at household level is sparse. In Botswana, most communities do not disburse benefits from CBNRM ventures to households. This leads to an inherent scale mismatch that arises because the costs of living with wildlife are felt at the household level, while the benefits are paid out at the community or village level. We use longitudinal data from two household surveys conducted 22 years apart to assess if benefits from the Botswana model of CBNRM have increased household-level adaptive capacity for those living with wildlife. We take a livelihoods capital approach to develop indicators of adaptive capacity and measure how livelihood diversity, inequality, and adaptive capacity have changed in five communities in northern Botswana between 1995 and 2017. Our analyses confirm the findings of qualitative reviews and suggest that CBNRM is under-performing in its contribution to improved household-level adaptive capacity. CBNRM cannot be said to benefit communities if the majority of community members do not experience increased well-being. We therefore recommend restructuring the governance models of CBNRM and other community conservation approaches to ensure that benefits are more directly targeted to actively participating households.

Background: An All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) is a comprehensive inventory of all species in a given territory. In 2007, the French Parc national du Mercantour and the Italian Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime started the first and most ambitious ATBI in Europe with more than 350 specialists and dozens of technicians and data managers involved. New information: The ATBI datasets from the Parc national du Mercantour in France are now publicly available. Between 2007 and 2020, 247,674 occurrences were recorded, checked and published in the INPN information system. All this information is available in open access in the GBIF web site. With 12,640 species registered, the ATBI is the most important inventory in France. This data paper provides an overview of main results and its contribution to the French National Inventory of Natural Heritage. Rapid environmental changes challenge the resilience of wildlands. The western portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin in California is an important ecological and cultural hotspot that is at risk of degradation from current and future environmental pressures. Historical uses, fire suppression, and a changing climate have created forest landscape conditions at risk of drought stress, destructive fire, and loss of habitat diversity. We prospectively modeled forest landscape conditions for a period of 100 years to evaluate the efficacy of 5 unique management scenarios in achieving desired landscape conditions. Management scenarios ranged from no management other than fire suppression to applying treatments consistent with historical fire frequencies and extent (i.e., regular and broadscale biomass reduction). We developed a decision support tool to evaluate environmental and social outcomes within a single framework to provide a transparent set of costs and benefits. Results illuminated underlying mechanisms of forest resilience and provided actionable guidance to decision makers. Sixteen attributes were assessed in the model after assigning weights to each. We found that removing forest biomass across the landscape, particularly when accomplished using extensive fire-based removal techniques, led to highly favorable conditions for environmental quality and promoted overall landscape resilience. Environmental conditions resulting from extensive fire-based biomass removal also had nominal variation over time, in contrast with strategies that had less extensive and/or used physical removal techniques (e.g., mechanical thinning). Our analysis provides a transparent approach to assess large datasets with complex and interacting variables. The scale of the wilderness makes it extremely difficult to constantly patrol for poaching activity. Consequently, there is an urgent need for an effective automated tool to curb poaching. The goal of this project was to build a low-cost device that can be installed in wilderness areas as well as on surveillance drones and can send real-time alerts of poaching activity to park officials. The device hardware consists of a Raspberry Pi computer with a power bank, camera, and an antenna. The test data mainly consisted of publicly available images of wild animals and humans in the wilderness. An image classification algorithm was built using a set of pre-trained AI models to detect the presence of humans, weapons, and animals in a photo; this algorithm was implemented on a device that can be used to notify officials of possible poaching activity. The device successfully meets all engineering goals. The design costs about US$100, takes about 5 minutes to run per image, is over 90% accurate in recognizing humans, weapons, and animals in all the test images, and can generate notifications. Abstract Farmer wildlife management practices are critical to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem functions across intensively used agricultural landscapes. Policies and initiatives aimed at encouraging these practices have generally focused on economic incentives, with limited effectiveness. Farmer identity theory addresses the emergence of norms, values and perceptions in farm management and can contribute to the development of policies and initiatives that engage more effectively with farmers and farming communities. Here we evaluate linkages between farmer identity and wildlife habitat management practices in the intensively farmed US state of Iowa. We conducted an exploratory factor analysis using data from a survey of over 1,300 Iowa farmers that asked their opinions on what constitutes ‘a good farmer’. We use logistic regression to model relationships between farmer identity factor scores and contextual variables against participation in a set of habitat management practices. Four ‘good farmer’ identity types were identified and labelled as productivist, soil conservationist, wildlife conservationist and civic‐minded. Logistic regression results indicated that these farmer identity types have highly divergent responses to wildlife habitat management practices among Iowa farmers. Recreational factors may supplement identity and are also influential towards habitat production on farms. We conclude that farmer identity theory offers a critical link between social and ecological processes on Iowa farms. The research presented here quantitatively associates farmer identity theory with wildlife habitat management, increasing our understanding of how wildlife habitat practices and individual‐level farmer identities interact. Decentralisation of environmental governance (DEG) proliferated around the world in the 1990s, inspired, in part, by theories of common-pool resource governance that argued that local communities could sustainably manage valuable but non-excludable resources given a set of proper institutional design principles. However, many species of wildlife, such as predators that consume livestock or herbivores that destroy crops, are considered undesirable by local communities; this challenges the applicability of DEG models for managing wildlife in these contexts. Numerous scholars have proposed methods to generate economic value from locally undesired wildlife species to incentivise their conservation, but the overall success of these approaches has been mixed. We explore the intersection of DEG and the management of wildlife entangled in human-wildlife conflict and challenge the assumption that simple models of devolution and decentralisation will lead to the successful governance of wildlife in such circumstances. We argue that conflict species governance is potentially compatible with DEG but requires a fuller consideration of institutions at multiple scales than is typically included in common-pool resource theory or decentralisation. Multiple mechanisms of accountability may be especially important in securing the conservation of wildlife in conflict scenarios.
