LATIN American literature , *PRODUCT obsolescence , *POETRY collections , *METADATA , *ANTHOLOGIES , *OBSOLESCENCE - Abstract
We herein describe how Flash poetry is archived in the Antología LitELat -- v.1, one of the main archives of Latin American digital literature available online. As Flash poetry is one of the most popular genres among authors in the field in the continent, we investigated recurrences in the metadata of the 19 works of this genre archived in the anthology, as well as the strategies adopted by the editors to preserve and publicize this material, especially because Adobe discontinued its support to Flash on December 31st, 2020. As to the metadata of the works, the plurality of authors and nationalities that make up the collection of Flash poetry in the archive is worthy of attention. Data referring to the year of publication also allow us to make inferences regarding the different versions some of these works had in various media/technologies (printed book, GIF, LED screen, Flash, CDROM, HTML5, etc.), also considering the development history of Flash itself as a multimedia tool that gradually incorporated more functionalities. As for the strategies adopted by the editors of the anthology to preserve and publicize this material after the obsolescence of Flash, the corpus shows that the most frequent strategies are to redirect the reader to external pages where the works are available in their 'original' format or emulated in Ruffle. As planned obsolescence is a risk to which any work of digital literature made using proprietary technologies is subject, studies like this must be replicated and improved, with a view to mapping good practices and challenges for literary archives of this nature. This article aims at focusing on the survival of a classic such as Posthumous memoirs of Bras Cubas from the turn of the 19th century (1881) to contemporaneity through an operation of intermediality between the printed book and the digital medium, with the hypertextual form as a mediating element, in latency in the book. The creation of an interface on a website accounts for the expansion of the book to new domains, now having associative hyperlink flows and interactivity as decisive factors for the survival of the novel. In this article, I present an analysis of contemporary digital literature works aimed at children and young adults based on the theory of remediation by Richard Grusin and Jay David Bolter. In the first section I discuss possible advantages and limitations of this theory when applied to the digital literature for children and young adults studies. Subsequently, I argue that the main remediation logics - imitation, enhancement, remodeling, and absorption - are presented in different formats of digital works addressed to this audience. Finally, I emphasize that the concept of remediation is valuable for understanding the predominant characteristics of these works, provided that its categories are not regarded as fixed or inflexible. This essay proposes some reflections about changes in the author's role and the ways of consuming culture based on considerations about the technological changes that have affected the materialization of literary texts since the creation of the mobile press in Western Europe and especially since the 1990s, when the popularization of personal computers and internet access led to unprecedented challenges for authors and readers. Considering that digital literature started to address the reader's bodily dimension since the 2000's, we suggest that this state of affairs has its provenance in a development line of the material aspect of the literary works. To speculate on the literary-historic sense of this, Giambattista Vico's, Northrop Frye's and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's thoughts are considered, as well as a short journey through the history of digital literature is made, looking on works said to be highlights of this history by researchers of the field. We conclude that digital literature went through an inverted course than the one suggested by Frye for non digital literature when it comes to its formal and material aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comparing concrete poetry to the clip-poems format, nowadays considered a cibertext, this article aims at to analyze nine productions by Augusto de Campos: "Luxo", "TVgrama 2", "Ininstante", "Sem saída", "O pulsar", "Criptocardiograma", "Pessoandando", "SOS", and "Cidade / city / cité". In order to present the effective movement, the interartistic relationships and the animation effects as advantages of the cyberspace and hypermedia, the analyzed videos will demonstrate that computer graphics provides the enhancement of the concrete poetry's ideals that prevailed in Brazil in the 1950s. As for the theoretical basis, will be considered concepts by authors such as Julio Plaza, Cyril Barret, Lucia Santaella, among others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The logic of the web 2.0 encourages and rewards the accelerated mass production and the “altruistic” exchange of signs among its users. Despite the apparent depreciation of the word’s value, it is possible to liberate the language of its automatisms. As Franco Berardi says, poetry, better than any other expression, breaks the transparency of communication. Specifically, this paper will focus on the experimental work “Peronism (spam)”, by the Argentinian writer Carlos Gradin, who uses the concept of spam to elaborate a heterogeneous and disruptive technopoetics of the standardized signs.

In this paper, we propose an analysis about the specificities of the hypertextual novel Terminal (Komatsu, 2018), mainly concerning its material formalization as a literary object of the new media (Manovich, 2005), which makes converge references to printed and digital culture. We seek to discuss the aspects that highlight that the work puts itself in an intermediary place by i) obliterating the computational logic of the Blogger platform and ii) obliterating the novel's paradigms consolidated by the printed culture. Thus, the work presents characteristics that make us ponder on two distinct cultural realities, printed and digital, and, in doing so, resignifies the cultural and material practices of the new media at the same time it provokes fissures in the rites institutionalized by the printed culture. Such analysis leads us to think over hypertextual literary reading as an extranoematic effort (Aarseth, 1997) and how it occurs in the work in question, from the analysis of one of the possible paths offered to the reader, who pilots, metaphorically, a spaceship interface while reading the work. The themed navigation expands and establishes a dialogue with the material characteristics of the medium, at the same time in which consolidates itself as a poetical resource for the narrative. If art - and by extension literature - has always been done with the media of its time as proposed by Arlindo Machado, in digital contemporaneity the digital media offer possibilities and impose restrictions on writers depending on how they choose to manipulate computer codes or, yet, experiment with the media in order to expand and/or refuse the specificities of literary genre born and consolidated throughout printed culture. Thus, this article analyzes the Instagram novel intitulated 2019 não passa in order to discuss how its material subscription, in a social network, alters / expands what we have identified as typical of the novel genre. The discussion regarding literature in expanded field has increased in several perspectives, and even through distinct concepts, such as amplification and non-specificity. In this context, this article presents a reflection on the pertinence of digital literature approach also on the expanded perspective. For this purpose, it proposes a brief overview through the refiguration of the character Alice from the Lewis Carroll's book when it is adapted to the gamer universe in the games American McGee's Alice (2000) and Alice: Madness Returns (2011). Based on elements from adaptation theory as well as narratology theories, some principles of the character survival process are analyzed in a digital narrative which expands the literary universe as it invites its reader-player to an interactive engagement of an intertextual nature. This essay juxtaposes three recent publications, Vicente Luis Mora's Circular 07. Las afueras (2007-), Kenneth Goldsmith's Capital: New York, Capital of the 20th Century (2015), and Jorge Carrión's Barcelona. Libro de los pasajes (2016), in order to explore how contemporary digital technologies construct and fragment urban experience on a global scale. Despite their different political intentions, these three works share a common aesthetic of appropriation, unoriginal quotation, and fragmentation, as they are also all modelled after Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project. Just like Benjamin did with Paris, each of these works focuses on a particular Western city--Madrid, New York, and Barcelona--now being proposed as paradigmatic representations of urban experience, which is meant to mimic digital media's modularity and disintegration. Goldsmith's use of appropriation is read as a blank endorsement of digital mediation of everyday life, which sits in opposition to Carrión's and Mora's political projects. Circular 07 and Barcelona mix unoriginal writing techniques, like Goldsmith's conceptual writing, with other experimental methods to warn readers against apolitical adoption of digital technologies. Fragmentation is still proposed as the most important aesthetic form of twenty-first century writing, but these two Spanish works strive for its contextualization as a complex mechanism structured around reader/writer subjectivity. Finally, this essay ponders how to consider new reader/writer subjectivities within the larger context of global cities in late capitalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital literature is a complex assemblage of related elements –material, spatial, linguistic, performative, textual, cultural, social– each of which is at one time interdependent and detached. This article discusses the literary creation within the cyberculture from the performativity point of view in relation to the textual apparatus. This is done through the analysis of a selection of performances where physical corporeality has a collaborative function with the body to a greater or lesser degree. Therefore, this physical feature can not only change, but stand at three possible and hybridizable axes: 1) the digital text as protagonist, 2) the digital text as counterpart, and 3) the digital text as site.

In recent decades we have observed major transformations in the forms of production, circulation, and reception of culture, based on the central place acquired by digital technologies in what we can identify as a new regime of cultural and aesthetic production. In this framework we have seen the development, since the late nineties, of the growing field of digital literature in Latin America. In the research I have carried out, two fields of creation can be distinguished: one that experiments with code language through programming, where we find hypertexts, hypermedia, generative literatures, code poetry, interactive literature, among others; and the other that experiments with the medium, where programming is not a requisite. In this domain we find tuiterature, instapoetry, narratives in WhatsApp, and all kinds of memes and poetic bots in social networks. In the field of digital literature, that which experiments with the medium has proliferated in recent years and, at the same time, has been the most attacked by the defenders of certain criteria of literary quality. Paradoxically, this type of literature has also been the least studied, so that those who defend literary quality do not question the criteria and assumptions that define it, and that perhaps are not applicable to digital literatures in their various formats. This literature constitutes a poetics of excess: it proliferates in social networks and is intertwined with the logic of obsolescence, repetition, and appropriation, which makes it difficult to understand. Literature that experiments with the medium constitutes a poetics of excess: it proliferates in social networks and is intertwined with the logic of obsolescence, repetition, and appropriation, which makes it difficult to apprehend. Its relatively recent appearance and its ephemeral characteristics are, perhaps, the reasons why it has received less attention in the field of Latin American digital literature. In this article I will analyze the poetic bot «Cumatron» by the Chilean collective Cyberpunga, to identify in this machinic writing some possible digital aesthetics, languages, and digital poetics that are developed in this form of writing in 280 characters. This work will also allow us to situate this type of writing in the Latin American discussion on creative practices in digital literature and culture, its particularities, and tensions.

The objective of the following article is to compare the printed and digital literature, from the poems “Árvore”, by Rui Torres, and the poem “Anímico”, from the work Bagagem (1976), by Adélia Prado. The article is theoretically supported by Octávio Paz, in O Arco e a Lira (2012); N. Katherine Hayles, in Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary (2009); Rui Torres, in Portuguese Experimental Poetry: Notebook and Catalogs Theoretical framework and critical context of PO. EX (2004); Daniele Cortês Maduro, in Cadaver queer, reader, cyborg and magnetic inscription: three views of the electronic text (2012); Umberto Eco, in Far beyond the Internet (2003); Jorge Luiz Antonio, in Tecno-Arte-Poetry in Brazil (2011). In the article, what poetry is according to Octávio Paz's Arco and Lira will be defined, then digital and printed literature will be differentiated, emphasizing the poetry genre. In the third part, the similar characteristics between the poems chosen to exemplify the discussion will be highlighted. As an expected result, we seek to contribute to research in the academic world about digital literature, the concept of poetry and studies aimed at poetry by Adélia Prado and Rui Torres.

In this research, we aim at discussing the different forms of authorship that arise through various collaborations provided by the Network. In this sense, we explore the tension between the publicized freedom of the internet in relation to aspects of subversion and coercion. Then we analyze how these can influence the production of literature and digital games in the 21st century. Finally, we found that collaboration by fans is able to exert great influence on digital products; however, this freedom is subject to rules, since, although games and literary texts flirt with greater possibilities of agency, the very mechanics of the Network tends to restrain them.

AESTHETICS , *READING , *CRITICAL analysis - Abstract
The reading of Amor de Clarice, by Rui Torres, imposes at least two embarassments to the critical analysis. One of them is due to the fact that the piece submits reading, since the title, to the Clarice Lispector's aesthetics, when it elects as the starting point the creation of the Clarice Lispector's short story, published in Laços de família, in 1960. The other, is related to its material formalization, and it requires analysis mechanisms attentive to the configuration hypertextual, and also the coexistence of verbal language with other languages. This essay is based on the assumption that both embarassments can be elaborated critically and used as analysis tool: the meanings consolidated in Clarice Lispector's short story can be read as elements that 'deprogram' (Machado, 2007) the digital technique, employed on the material formalization of Amor de Clarice, at the same time that this material formalization can be identified as what enables displacing and expanding the meanings of Clarice Lispector's short story. The analysis of the piece is supported by the reflections of Marku Eskellinen (2012) about the intertextuality on the context of cybertextuality and by those from George Landow (1994; 2009), about the hypertext. This report is the result of a study case about the use of the interartistic perspective on teaching literary works in the last year of secondary education. The teaching practice of the Master in Português no 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário occurred on a Visual Arts 12th grade class, on the 2021/2022 school year, in Escola Secundária de Avelar Brotero. This study aims to determine the importance of the interartistic dialogues in the classroom and its benefits to the literary texts comprehension. To determine its adequacy, we compared the relation between various art forms as studied in Literatura e Ensino do Português (Bernardes e Mateus, 2013) and the teaching experience throughout this school year. The chosen arts for the relationship with literature were painting and digital poetry and both highlighted different aspects in the studied literary works such as form, context, content, narrative, characters or stylistic resources, as well as enhancing the students' aesthetic and critical knowledge. The analysis of the collected data and the conclusions that were drawn after the classes allowed us to conclude that the students benefited from the knowledge of the Visual Arts course and applied them in their literature study.

Students in secondary education and baccalaureate will be confronted, throughout their education, with the analysis of discourses and texts, including digital texts. In accordance with the official curriculum, this content will be taught by teachers of the different languages which make up this stage, including Spanish Language and Literature. The aim of this article is to offer a proposal for an approach to the analysis of digital literary texts in accordance with the level required at the aforementioned educational stage. To support this proposal, we have chosen a theoretical framework based on multimodality, which allows the analysis of digital text and its discourse in a more complete way than a purely textual analysis because it considers more parameters such as graphic design, user experience, and web design itself. Based on this theoretical framework, a methodology is created that facilitates the examination of any digital text, although it is worth mentioning that this methodology will be applied here to the analysis of a specific digital literary product, which can be applied inferentially to other digital texts. This article aims to provide teachers with a theoretical resource to extract as much information as possible from a digital text and its consequent discourse, thus facilitating their performance in the classroom when working with students on this content., El alumnado de Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato se enfrentará, a lo largo de su discurrir formativo, con el análisis de discursos y textos, entre los que se encuentra el digital.

In this keynote lecture, Roberto Simanowski combines close reading of single works with a media-ontological reading of digital art and digital literature. The folowing works are analysed in detail: Romy Achituv and Camille Utterback’s Text Rain (1999); Bit.Fall (2006) by Julius Popp; Still Standing by Jason Lewis (2005); and Caleb Larsen's The Complete Works of W.S. This work aims to be a first reflection on the new digital genre of instapoetry in Catalan. The social platform Instagram has allowed the birth of a young poetry that has burst onto the scene of digital creation without cultured referents and, unmarked from the conventional high poetry scene, has not yet been recognised. Faced with a clash of unbalanced knowledge, misconceptions and unfulfilled demands, instapoetry finds itself unprotected, misunderstood and lacking figures or entities that can recognise it as an independent and relevant genre in the literary scene, and that can accompany it with a good academic reception and subsequent institutionalisation. Through a digital contextualisation and the observation of real cases forced by the lack of specialised references, this essay seeks to fill a gap in the Catalan academy in order to encourage the exploration of a new literary genre and the discovery of a series of instapoets who, without realising it, have become foundational references.

Our times can be characterized in many ways, but there is no doubt that the presence of digital devices is one of the most notable elements to take into account. Nowadays, a wide network of digital devices interconnected through the Internet is spread around the world and support new models of communication and reorganization of the work structure. Social networks, as a remarkable phenomenon, have absorbed a large part of our lives. Instagram, as a study example, can be defined as a dynamic and autopoietic macrotextuality, consisting of the interrelation and interdependence of user «profiles». These profiles are the result of a permanent formation process, in which the different elements that compose it constitute a circulating digital subjectivity (that is to say, a digital identification device that flows and moves through the network, interacting with the other nodes). The social media are related in a symbiotic way with respect to analog reality, being both universes instances that condition each other. In this work, we reflect on the relationship between digital devices, subjectivation processes and artistic production; more specifically, we aim to point out some problems with the relationship between subjectivity, literature and digital media. We understand the relationship between art, technology and subjectivity like a capital problem to see the different manners of the contemporary capitalism. Some questions that we will use as a starting point are: How does the platform condition the materiality of literary production? How does the process of subjectivity formation in social networks occur? What impacts does it have in the analog world? How is it related to this analog world and to what extent do they condition each other? What role does the reader play in these new literatures? How is the author concept redefined? To what extent do these new digital productions force us to rethink the field of criticism?

Abstract The logic of the web 2.0 encourages and rewards the accelerated mass production and the “altruistic” exchange of signs among its users.

This article discusses what Electronic Literature is, as well as the poetics found in the Electronic Literature Collection, present in three volumes. It is necessary to consider the importance of knowing this interactive way of reading and, as a result, its promotion. From the discussions proposed here, it is clear that these electronic media are different from the printed media. However, since the emergence of concrete poetry to digital poetry, the book in its physical version has not disappeared, it has only undergone changes with the introduction of Electronic Literature, this fact demonstrates that the two types of formats can live together smoothly.

Digital literature is characterised by giving a clear protagonism to the reader, who will become the one responsible for the development of the narrative responsible for the development of the narrative. Through interactivity, interaction with the author and the convergence of different media, the reader will determine the evolution of the plot. But to what extent can he or she influence the narrative? Does the author remain in the background or does he or she continue to have absolute control over the text? or is the author still in full control of the text? Drawing on post-structuralist theories of reading and authorship, as well as ideas linked to postmodernism, the paper will focus on interactive novels in app format to discuss how author and reader relate to each other in this type of literature, as well as to determine the consequences of this new dynamic.
