BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Falling asleep while feeding (FAF) infants is common. Our primary objectives were to examine (1) maternally reported prevalence of FAF and if planned; (2) association between FAF and sociodemographic factors, feeding method, and sleep location; and (3) if receipt of education about safe sleep and bedsharing risks was associated with FAF. METHODS: In the Social Media and Risk-reduction Training study, US mothers of newborns were randomized to educational messaging promoting infant safe sleep or breastfeeding. We analyzed data from 1259 mothers who responded to the postpartum survey (mean infant age, 11.2 weeks). We used generalized estimating equation logistic regression models to examine the extent that sociodemographic characteristics, feeding type, usual nighttime feeding location, and intervention group were associated with FAF. RESULTS: A total of 28.2% of mothers reported FAF usually or sometimes in the last 2 weeks, 83.4% of whom reported that FAF was unplanned. There were no differences in the odds of FAF by sociodemographic factors. Compared with mothers whose nighttime feeding location was their bed, mothers who reported feeding in a chair were less likely to FAF (33.6% versus 16.8%; adjusted odds ratio, 0.41; 95% confidence interval, 0.31-0.56). FAF was reported less frequently by mothers who received safe sleep interventions (15.6%), compared with mothers who received breastfeeding interventions (33.0%; adjusted odds ratio, 0.40; 95% confidence interval, 0.25-0.65). CONCLUSIONS: FAF is reported commonly among US mothers and is predominantly unplanned. Mothers who received safe sleep messaging were less likely to report FAF. Background and aim: The burden of orofacial clefts (OFCs) has declined globally except in sub-Saharan Africa, with a great disease burden in North Africa. Children with OFCs have a high risk of malnutrition, and African countries have some of the highest malnutrition rates. This scoping review assessed the status of research on OFCs and nutrition and feeding among children living in African countries. Methods: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for conducting scoping reviews. We searched eleven databases for articles on malnutrition and feeding among children with OFCs living in African countries. No restriction was done by type of study or publication date. Books, book chapters, and reviews were excluded. Only publications in English language were included. We extracted information about the publication year, study design, setting, location, participants' age, data collection methods, international collaboration, and funding. We classified articles into studies assessing (1) the impact of nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy on OFCs, (2) the impact of OFCs on malnutrition, (3) feeding problems in children with OFCs, and (4) the impact of nutritional status on OFCs repair outcomes. We calculated frequencies and used bar charts and a map. Results: Out of 208 search results, 36 were duplicates, and 25 eventually fit the inclusion criteria, with 52% retrieved from Google Scholar. About 80% of the studies were from four countries: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Uganda; 72% were hospital-based and 52% were cross-sectional. The most frequent data collection method was clinical examination and questionnaires. Most studies focused on feeding problems in children with OFCs (44%) and the impact of OFCs on malnutrition (32%). International collaboration was observed in six studies, with one study showing South-South collaboration. Only two studies were funded. Conclusions: There is a predominance of under-funded descriptive research not indexed by international databases. Minimal research has been directed to population-level OFC preventive programs in primary healthcare settings and assessing interventions supporting children with OFCs. A research agenda is needed to prioritize research needs and secure funds to support South-South collaboration to address the nutrition and feeding-related problems associated with OFCs. Background: Many parturients have poor self-care ability, strong dependence on others, and lack mother-infant related nursing skills and health care knowledge. Due to their lack of pregnancy experience, many primiparas lack the relevant skills and knowledge, which can affect maternal and infant health and maternal quality of life. Purpose: The study aimed to investigate the effects of the PRECEDE-PROCEDE model on self-care ability and quality of life among primipara during puerperium. Methods: This quasi-clinical study selected eligible primaparas from those who gave birth at a Grade A hospital in Hengyang, China between April and July 2019. Eighty puerperium primiparas were divided into a control group receiving standard care and an intervention group following the PRECEDE-PROCEDE model. Comparison of self-care ability and quality of life scores was conducted between the two groups pre-intervention, at 3 weeks, and at 6 weeks postpartum. Statistical analysis using SPSS 18.0 included mean and standard deviation for measurement data, and frequency and constituent ratio for counting data. Tests such as t-test, Chi-squared test, rank-sum test, and repeated measure analysis of variance were applied. Findings: The control group's self-care ability scores were (150.8 ± 9.9), (150.9 ± 9.3), and (152.0 ± 10.2) before intervention, at 3 weeks postpartum, and at 6 weeks postpartum, respectively. For the intervention group, the corresponding scores were (151.1 ± 15.1), (157.8 ± 8.5), and (162.4 ± 7.2). Quality of life scores for the control group were (54.7 ± 8.6), (54.8 ± 7.7), and (55.1 ± 7.7) before intervention, at 3 weeks postpartum, and at 6 weeks postpartum, respectively. At the same time points, while the intervention group saw increases from (55.6 ± 7.6) to (59.2 ± 5.9) and (61.0 ± 5.3). There were statistically significant differences in the time effect and inter-group effect of the total score of self-care ability during puerperium, total score of quality of life, and the score of each dimension between the two groups (P < 0.05), and we also found an interaction effect between grouping and time factors (P < 0.05). After intervention, the incidence of common puerperium health problems except neonatal constipation and diarrhea in the intervention group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: PRECEDE-PROCEDE model may improve self-care ability, reduce the occurrence of common health problems, and improve the quality of life of primiparas during puerperium. Maternal perceptions, about the nutritional status of their children, may have implications for timely health care seeking and feeding behaviour. Shreds of evidence are limited in this area that assessed maternal perception about the nutritional status of the children in the context of Bangladesh. The objective of this study is to assess the differences in mothers' perceptions about their children's nutritional status who are less than 5 years of age and their associated factors in the context of urban slum areas. A cross‐sectional study (Quantitative approach) was conducted in two of the largest urban slums of Dhaka city. A total of 437 mother–children dyads were included in the final analysis. The outcome of interest was the mother's 'varied perceptions' regarding the nutritional status of their children under five. 'Varied perception' refers to the difference between a mother's subjective assessment of her child's nutritional condition and the anthropometrically measured nutritional status. The prevalence of mother's varied perceptions was around 46%, and among them, 37% of mothers underestimated and 9% overestimated their child's nutritional status. 'The child doesn't want to eat' (AOR = 3.69; 95% CI: 2.34–5.85; p < 0.001) and 'Feels light when carried' (AOR = 3.39; 95% CI: 1.69–6.81; p = 0.001) were the significant reasons behind the mother's perception about the nutritional status of their under‐five children. About one in two mothers' perceptions about their children varied from the anthropometry‐derived status. Various research findings indicate that providing health education on proper feeding practices for children, along with anthropometric measurements, can assist mothers in enhancing their understanding and assessing their child's nutritional status with greater accuracy. Further qualitative research may be instrumental in getting deeper insights into maternal perception to develop context‐specific interventions. Objective: To describe long-term outcomes and complications following mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) in a diverse patient cohort Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Single tertiary-care pediatric center Patients: Forty-eight patients previously undergoing MDO with minimum 4-year follow-up Main Outcome Measures: Respiratory outcomes, feeding patterns, dental development, motor/sensory nerve function, temporo-mandibular joint function, and postsurgical scarring Results: Forty-six patients with a median age of 7 years were evaluated. Of 20 nonsyndromic patients, none required additional airway procedures, none required continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) during sleep, and 19 (95%) fed exclusively by mouth. Among 26 syndromic patients, 7 (27%) required CPAP and 8 (31%) were tube fed. Permanent first molar differences were seen in the majority of subjects; patterns of damage interfering with function were more common in syndromic (13/28, 46%) compared to nonsyndromic (5/24, 21%; P =.014) subjects. MDO prior to age two was associated with more frequent and worse dental damage (P =.001). Inferior alveolar nerve and marginal mandibular nerve function were fully intact in 37 (80%) and 39 (85%) of patients, respectively. Three patients (6%), all with associated genetic syndromes, demonstrated severe nerve impairment. By the Vancouver scar scale, ≥ 80% of surgical scars were rated in the most favorable category for each quality assessed. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction was rare. Conclusions: MDO shows highly favorable long-term respiratory, feeding, nerve, and scar outcomes in nonsyndromic patients, although permanent molar changes not precluding tooth viability are commonly seen. Background: Breastfeeding provides vital nutrients and fosters maternal–infant bonding, benefiting both mother and child. However, breastfeeding duration is influenced by various factors, especially in women of high-risk pregnancy. This study aims to identify predictors of breastfeeding duration among women of high-risk and low-risk pregnancy, focusing on exclusive and mixed feeding practices. Methods: Conducted at a public hospital in Attica, Greece, this 20-month prospective cohort study (May 2020–January 2022) included 380 pregnant women, divided into high-risk and low-risk groups. The final sample of 157 women, after excluding non-breastfeeding participants, was assessed across five phases from prenatal to six months postpartum using interviews, calls, and surveys. Multiple linear regression identified key predictors, with statistical methods applied. Results: Results revealed birth weight as a consistent significant predictor of breastfeeding duration. For women with high-risk pregnancy, additional factors like infant gender, jaundice, and early introduction of solid foods influenced breastfeeding duration. The mixed breastfeeding model for women with high-risk pregnancy explained 72.9% of the variance. Exclusive and mixed breastfeeding models for women with low-risk pregnancy also highlighted birth weight's influence. Conclusion: The findings highlight the important role of birth weight and other specific factors in determining breastfeeding duration among women of high-risk and low-risk pregnancy. Introduction: This review identified and appraised Australian open‐access online resources relating to feeding and nutrition during the first 5 years of life. Methods: Eligible resources were identified by hand searching plus a targeted search of pertinent source websites (government, hospitals and health services, peak bodies, and nutrition organisations) published in English with/without translations to other languages between 2012 and 2022. Search terms relating to the population (children) AND topic (nutrition OR feeding) were entered into Google and Bing. Critical appraisal of each resource was conducted using a modified version of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Clear Communication Index. Results: The search identified 1327 nutrition resources, of which 1067 were appraised. Forty‐five percent were paper‐based resources, 47% were online content only, and 8% audio‐visual resources. Almost half of the resources (45%) broadly addressed the 0–5 years age range, and 24% provided information on breast or formula feeding. Limited resources were found specifically addressing growth and development (5%) and introducing solids (8%). Only 10% of resources were culturally tailored and only 3% were translated into a language other than English. Appraisal showed the majority included visual cues and appropriate language, but less included images to support the main message of the resource. Discussion: Although there were a large volume of evidence‐based nutrition resources available in Australia for feeding children under 5 years, they were highly dispersed and of varying quality. Collating and presenting these resources in an open‐access resource hub would empower families and education and health professionals in the nutritional care of young children. Aim: In Taiwan, over 90% of dementia patients received home care. Severe dementia‐linked food refusal significantly affects nutrition, thereby straining caregivers. Family caregivers can reduce their burden by learning feeding and dementia nutrition online, thus preserving patient oral feeding. The study aim for family caregivers learn online Hand‐Under‐Hand (UH) techniques to ease feeding in severe dementia, enhancing nutrition and reducing their burden. Methods: In this quasi‐experimental study, participants in the experimental group received 2‐h UH courses online, while the control group received their usual care. The primary outcome indicators were abnormal eating behavior, nutritional status, and caregiver burden, with outcomes tracked at 0, 1, and 3 months. At the neurology outpatient clinic of a medical center in Taipei, 65 dyads—comprising patients with severe dementia and their caregivers—were randomly assigned to groups. Results: The study participants comprised 36 female and 29 male caregivers, with an average age of 58.09 years. The patient group included 43 females and 22 males, with a mean age of 83.32 years. Patients in the experimental group exhibited reduced abnormal eating behavior, and caregiver burden was reduced at 1 and 3 months, patients demonstrated improved nutritional status by month 3. Conclusions: The accessibility and convenience of online courses enabled family caregivers to use UH feeding techniques to effectively improve the nutritional status and correct the abnormal eating behavior of patients with dementia, while also decreasing caregiver burden. Aim: The aim of this study was to scrutinize how online occupational therapy group training for mothers influenced their attitudes and stress levels relating to feeding their children and the eating behaviours of the children. The secondary purpose of the study is to evaluate the satisfaction of the participants of this program. Twenty‐nine mothers of children aged 3–6 years, experiencing feeding issues, were randomly allocated to either an intervention or control group. Background: Feeding problems including selective eating, loss of appetite, and mealtime behaviour problems are prevalent during childhood. Parents play a fundamental role in acquiring knowledge about feeding. Problems in the feeding process may lead to parental stress, feelings of despair, and incorrect attitudes. Results: The mothers in the research group participated in the 4‐week training. Results indicated positive effects on both maternal attitudes and their children's eating behaviours (p < 0.05). No significant change was found in mothers' state and trait anxiety levels (p > 0.05). Participants were asked to score their satisfaction level with the program between 1 and 10, and the average of the scores was 9.78 ± 0.42. Importance: Self-feeding independence is often the first goal in acute stroke rehabilitation. Attention deficits appear frequently after stroke, but neuropsychological tests may be difficult to perform in the acute phase, and the effect on self-feeding activities may be difficult to detect. Therefore, we aimed to clarify behavioral problems with self-feeding using the Moss Attention Rating Scale (MARS), a behavioral observational rating scale of attentional function, for a better understanding of the effects of self-feeding. Objective: To identify behavioral problems caused by attention deficits among patients with acute stroke who need assistance in self-feeding, using the MARS. Design: Cross-sectional single-center study. Setting: St. Marianna University Yokohama Seibu Hospital, Kanagawa, Japan. Participants: A total of 96 patients (42 women and 54 men) were admitted to the hospital for stroke treatment. Patients' median age was 75.0 yr. The date of evaluation was a median of 3.0 days from admission. Outcome and Measures: The primary outcome was the FIM® eating subscore. The secondary outcome was the MARS score. Results: Significant differences were noted in the total raw MARS, logit, and three-factor scores for self-feeding independence (p <.01). The effect size of the consistent or sustained factor on independence was large (r =.83). Conclusions and Relevance: Behavioral problems related to self-feeding dependence include the inability for sustained attention. Our results suggest that sustained concentration during self-feeding is necessary for eating independence. Rehabilitation focused on sustained attention is important for independent self-feeding. BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrate that exclusive breastfeeding has positive long-term health effects on the mother and infant, but research has shown that nearly 50% of mothers do not breastfeed for the recommended amount of time. OBJECTIVE: This article systematizes previous quantitative research on the impact of work on breastfeeding practices to identify the factors that correlate to the cessation of breastfeeding in working mothers. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statements, we performed a systematic review that screened PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Academic Search Complete databases for articles relating to maternal employment and breastfeeding. RESULTS: Of the 13,106 articles assessed for eligibility, 21 studies met all requirements and were included in this systematic review. The 21 articles were divided into study type and methods, participant demographics, study outcomes, and additional factors that included stressors and stress levels, factors that increased or decreased rates of breastfeeding, and feeding methods. Articles outside of the United States were excluded due to differences in maternity leave policies of other countries impacting the data. CONCLUSION: Cessation of breastfeeding and breastfeeding outcomes were seen to have a strong association with maternal employment, specifically with the policies and employer support in the workplace. Other factors such as race, level of education, and stress were also shown to relate to breastfeeding outcomes and are important to consider in future public health interventions and workplace policies. Background: One of the most dangerous complications after endotracheal intubation or tracheostomy is tracheal stenosis. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the personal and clinical characteristics of tracheal stenosis following intubation or tracheostomy in intensive care unit patients. Methods: This is a nested case-control study. Thirty-five patients who suffered from tracheal stenosis from March 2016 to March 2021 and had been intubated and tracheostomized in intensive care units (ICU) were selected for the case group. The control group included 105 patients intubated and tracheostomized in ICU during the same period without tracheal stenosis. A demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire was used to collect data from the patients' medical records. Results: The mean length of intubation (P < 0.001), endotracheal and tracheostomy tube cuff pressure (P < 0.001), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (P = 0.043), intubation history (P = 0.045), and airway management (P < 0.001) showed significant differences between the case and control groups. The logistic regression model revealed that COPD (OR = 8.519, P = 0.037), intubation history (OR = 3.939, P = 0.013), length of intubation (OR = 1.118, P = 0.003), age (OR = 0.960, P = 0.030), and endotracheal and tracheostomy tube cuff pressure (OR = 1.988, P < 0.001) were associated with tracheal stenosis. The time interval between intubation/tracheostomy ranged from approximately 28 to 938 days. Conclusions: Given the impact of certain care practices during hospitalization on the occurrence of tracheal stenosis, such as the mean length of intubation, endotracheal and tracheostomy tube cuff pressure, and airway management, it is recommended that standardized training on these interventions be prioritized for staff in intensive care departments. The quality of complementary feeding can have both short‐ and long‐term health impacts by delaying or promoting child growth and establishing taste preferences and feeding behaviours. We aimed to assess the healthy and unhealthy feeding practices of infants and young children in rural Ethiopia. We conducted two rounds of surveys in December 2017/18 in Habru district, North Wello, rural Ethiopia among caregivers of infants and young children (N = 574). We characterised the consumption of infants and young children using non‐quantitative 24 h recall and the World Health Organization infant and young child feeding indicators. Sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometry and haemoglobin concentrations were assessed. Breastfeeding was a norm as 82% and 67% were breastfed in the first and second rounds. Between the two rounds, dietary diversity increased from 5% to 17% (p < 0.05), but more pronounced increases were observed in the consumption of ultra‐processed food (UPFs). Up to one‐in‐five (22%) of the children consumed UFPs. With an average of only three food groups consumed, the consumption of nutrient‐dense foods like animal source foods, fruits and vegetables was very low particularly among younger children. UPFs are an additional risk factor that contributes to poor quality diets. Behavioural Change Communication interventions, including those in rural areas, should explicitly discourage the consumption of UPFs. Future studies should aim to quantify the amount of UPFs consumed and evaluate how this is associated with diet adequacy and nutritional outcomes. Background. Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is life-threatening with a rising incidence due to improved neonatal care. While researchers' focus has shifted to causes, risk factors and preventative clinical strategies, little is known about the exact aetiology of NEC. Risk factors include the relationship between red blood cell transfusions (RBCTs) and the development of transfusion-associated NEC (TANEC) and peri-transfusion feeding, increasing the risk of TANEC. Objectives. Evaluate the relationship between RBCT and peri-transfusion feeding practices and the development of TANEC in very low birthweight (VLBW) neonates over 5 years. Methods. This was a retrospective analytical record review of all VLBW neonates admitted to two tertiary hospitals' neonatal units in Bloemfontein, South Africa (SA), from 1 January 2012 - 31 December 2016. Results. The study population (n=1 426) had a median birthweight of 1 260 g and a median gestation age of 30 weeks. RBCTs were given to 41.9%, and NEC developed in 7.4%, of whom 47.6% had an RBCT (TANEC). Half (47.2%) were kept nil per os (NPO) around the transfusion. No association was found between NPO status and TANEC development (8.9% NPO patients, 7.9% non-NPO patients, p=0.6826). No significant differences regarding Modified Bell's Staging were found between neonates who developed TANEC v. NEC. Conclusion. Optimising the administration of RBCTs and evidence-based feeding protocols is crucial in reducing TANEC's impact on premature neonates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determine self-reported parental feeding behavior changes and perspectives on parental feeding intervention at 12-month follow-up. Telephone focus groups using a 2 × 2 design (English/Spanish × in-class or online) with Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program participants (n = 37) with children 2–8 years and high exposure to the Food, Feeding, and Your Family intervention (7 lessons). Researchers (n = 3) independently identified themes. Parental behavior changes that (1) positively influenced children's diets, (2) involved children in food-related activities, (3) eased stressful situations around food, (4) led to healthier food choices, and (5) saved money when food shopping. Commonly implemented practices included establishing structured mealtime routines, introducing new foods multiple times, and encouraging children's eating competence. Online participants noted materials were easily accessible via text messages. Incorporating parental feeding content (in-class or online) into nutrition education interventions, such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program , supports developing positive parental feeding behaviors in families with low income. Summary: Background/Objectives: The infant diet represents one of the main modifiable determinants of early growth. This study aimed to investigate the associations of infant feeding practices with body mass index (BMI) until 7.5 years. Subjects/Methods: Analyses were based on data from the French nationwide ELFE birth cohort. Data on breastfeeding (BF) and complementary feeding (CF) were collected monthly from 2 to 10 months. Infant feeding practices were characterized using principal component analyses (PCA) and hierarchical ascendant classification. BMI z‐score was computed at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7.5 years, from data collected in the child's health booklet; 7.5‐year overweight was defined according to IOTF references. Associations between infant feeding practices and BMI were investigated by linear regression models adjusted for main confounders. Results: Ever breastfeeding was not associated with BMI up to 7.5 years. Compared to intermediate breastfeeding duration (1 to <3 months), longer breastfeeding duration (≥6 months) was related to lower 1‐year BMI, but not at older ages. Compared to the recommended age at CF introduction (4–6 months), early CF (<4 months) was related to higher BMI up to 5 years with a similar trend at 7.5 years, but not to the risk of overweight. The PCA patterns characterized by early baby cereal introduction and late food pieces introduction or by frequent intake of main food groups were related to a lower BMI up to 7.5 years. Despite significant progress made previously and the recognized health benefits of optimal feeding practices, ensuring a minimum acceptable diet in developing countries like Ethiopia remains a formidable challenge. Additionally, there is a scarcity of data in this area. Therefore, our study aims to identify predictors of a minimum acceptable diet using a powerful tool called complementary log‐log regression analysis. Thus, it contributes to accelerating the pathway of ending child undernutrition thereby promoting optimal child health. A multilevel analysis was conducted among a weighted sample of 1427 children aged 6‐23 months using the 2019 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS). The EDHS sample was stratified and selected in two stages. A minimum acceptable diet is defined as a composite of children fed with both minimum dietary diversity and minimum meal frequency. Data extraction took place between August 1 and 30, 2023. We used STATA software version 17 for data analysis. A complementary log‐log regression model was fitted to identify significant predictors of the minimum acceptable diet. A p‐value of ≤0.05 was used to declare statistically significant predictors. Only 10.44% (95CI: 8.90‐12.15) of the children meet the minimum acceptable diet. Child aged (18‐23 month) (AOR = 1.78, 95CI:1.14‐2.78)], mother's educational level (secondary and above education) (AOR = 279,95CI: 1.51‐5.15), number of children three and above [(AOR = 0.78,95CI: 0.53‐0.94], institutional delivery [AOR = 1.77,95CI: 1.11‐3.11], having postnatal‐check‐up [AOR = 2.33,95CI: 1.59‐3.41] and high community poverty level (AOR = 0.49,95CI: 0.29‐0.85) were found to be predictors of minimum acceptable diet. In Ethiopia, only one in ten children achieve a minimum acceptable diet. Which is lower than the global report findings (16%). Enhancing maternal education programs and promoting family planning strategies to reduce household size are essential. Besides, encouraging institutional deliveries and postnatal check‐ups are also recommended. It is necessary to implement targeted interventions for poverty reduction in communities to ensure that families can afford nutritious diets for their children. We aimed to describe how breastfeeding relates to adherence to complementary feeding (CF) recommendations, diet diversification and feeding skills development and whether sociodemographic factors explain any differences observed. The Scottish Maternal Infant and Nutrition Survey for infants aged 8–12 months collected breastfeeding history, CF practices, diet and sociodemographic data using a self‐completion questionnaire. Non‐healthful CF practices were starting CF < 6 months, any consumption of sugar‐sweetened beverages (SSBs), sweet or salty snacks (treats) or unmodified cow's milk and regular consumption of commercial baby foods. Diet diversification and feeding skills were assessed by amount of self‐feeding and number of food groups, meals and snacks eaten daily. Of the 2730 mothers, 20% were solely infant formula fed (IFF) and 48% continued breastfeeding ≥6 months. Compared to IFF babies, mothers who gave any breast milk ≥6 months were more likely to start CF ≥ 6 months compared to those IFF (66% vs. 37%) and less likely to give treats (15% vs. 45%), SSBs (11% vs. 20%) and commercial baby foods (31% vs. 53%). These associations remained highly significant (p < 0.001) even after sociodemographic factor adjustment. Despite starting CF later, infants breastfed ≥6 months ate the same number of food groups and meals as those IFF, were just as likely to self‐feed purees and more likely to self‐feed finger foods daily (87% vs. 81% p < 0.001). Mothers who breastfeed beyond 6 months adhere more to CF recommendations and start CF later compared to IFF, but their babies eat a similarly diverse diet and have similar feeding skills. Background: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience more difficulties with oral motor skills, including chewing, drinking, and swallowing. The present study attempts to measure the preliminary effectiveness of Global Intensive Feeding Therapy (GIFT) in DS. GIFT is a new rehabilitation program addressing the specific difficulties and needs of each child, focusing on sensory and motor oral abilities. It follows an intensive schedule comprising 15 sessions over 5 consecutive days, with 3 sessions per day. The principles of GIFT are applied with specific objectives for DS. Methods: GIFT was preliminarily implemented among 20 children diagnosed with DS. To measure the efficacy of GIFT, the Karaduman Chewing Performance Scale (KCPS), the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), and the Pediatric Screening–Priority Evaluation Dysphagia (PS–PED) were used. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test before (T0) and after intervention (T1) and at one-month follow-up (T2). The effect size was also measured for specific outcomes, using Kendall's W. Results: Our findings revealed that children with DS showed no risk of dysphagia according to the PS–PED (mean score 2.80). Furthermore, statistically significant improvements in chewing performance were observed, as measured by the KCPS (p < 0.01), as well as in texture acceptance and modification, as measured by the IDDSI post-intervention (p < 0.01). For both the KCPS and IDDSI, a large effect size was found (Kendall's W value > 0.8). Parents/caregivers continued using GIFT at home, and this allowed for a positive outcome at the one-month follow-up. Assistive robots have the potential to support independence, enhance safety, and lower healthcare costs for older adults, as well as alleviate the demands of their care partners. However, ensuring that these robots will effectively and reliably address end-user needs in the long term requires user-specific design factors to be considered during the robot development process. To identify these design factors, we embedded Stretch, a mobile manipulator created by Hello Robot Inc., in the home of an older adult with motor impairments and his care partner for four weeks to support them with everyday activities. An occupational therapist and a robotics engineer lived with them during this period, employing an immersive participatory design approach to co-design and customise the robot with them. Background. Older people with life-limiting conditions often have dysphagia. The Department of Medicine and Rehabilitation of Tung Wah East Hospital initiated a careful hand feeding (CHF) programme for patients with feeding problems. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the CHF programme as well as the completeness and appropriateness of CHF discussions with in-patients. Methods. This retrospective observational study was conducted from May 2021 to October 2022. All patients who had CHF were recruited. Demographic data, feeding information, follow-up survey records, and data regarding subsequent readmission or death were retrieved. The primary outcome was 6-month survival. Secondary outcomes were hospital readmission, change from CHF to tube feeding, and support from healthcare staff. Results. A total of 94 patients (36 women and 58 men) aged 49 to 100 (mean, 85) years were included. Of these, 46% had advanced dementia as the principal diagnosis. Overall, 48% of patients died during the index admission; 39% of discharged patients were readmitted within 1 month. Moreover, 2% and 41% of patients died within 1 and 6 months, respectively. Among discharged patients, 80% followed dietary recommendations, whereas the remaining patients added foods they liked. Common feeding problems were refusal to open the mouth and occasional choking. Conclusions. Structured management protocols and training can facilitate CHF implementation. Communication with the family is important, as is documentation of the communication process. Telephone follow-up ensures continuous support from the hospital to community settings. Future enhancements include dietitian recommendations for soft meal choices and recipes. Objective: To assess the characteristics of popular videos on YouTube about the feeding of infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and analyze the adequacy of information provided by them. Design: A cross-sectional design was used. Methods: YouTube was systematically searched for consecutive relevant videos about the feeding of infants with CLP, using predefined keyword combinations, without any limitations on language or duration. Scrutiny of the top 50 videos for each keyword combination was performed and a self-designed data-extraction sheet was used. A content adequacy index was developed by an expert group, and used to assess content adequacy, classifying it into categories from excellent to poor. Results: From an initial retrieval of 200 videos, 42 were included in the final assessment. The videos originated from nine different countries, with more than half coming from the USA and in English. Five of the videos came from the channel of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. Content adequacy analysis showed that no video could be classified as excellent, while 33.3% were classified as optimal, 21.4% as suboptimal and 45.2% as poor. Conclusions: The content adequacy of the majority of videos on YouTube, relating to the feeding of infants with CLP was inadequate, with only one third of them achieving optimal content adequacy. Efforts must be made to develop informative and standardized videos for social media and video-sharing platforms, perhaps through professional associations to ensure that families with an infant with CLP receive appropriate information. This study aimed to assess how Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium co-fermented feed (FF) affects the antioxidant capacity, muscle fibre types and muscle lipid profiles of finishing pigs. In this study, a total of 144 Duroc × Berkshire × Jiaxing Black finishing pigs were randomly assigned into three groups with four replicates (twelve pigs per replication). The three treatments were a basal diet (0 % FF), basal diet + 5 % FF and basal diet + 10 % FF, respectively. The experiment lasted 38 d after 4 d of acclimation. The study revealed that 10 % FF significantly increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) compared with 0 % FF group, with mRNA levels of up-regulated antioxidant-related genes (GPX1 , SOD1 , SOD2 and CAT) in 10 % FF group. 10 % FF also significantly up-regulated the percentage of slow-twitch fibre and the mRNA expression of MyHC I , MyHC IIa and MyHC IIx , and slow MyHC protein expression while reducing MyHC IIb mRNA expression. Lipidomics analysis showed that 5 % FF and 10 % FF altered lipid profiles in longissimus thoracis. 10 % FF particularly led to an increase in the percentage of TAG. The Pearson correlation analysis indicated that certain molecular markers such as phosphatidic acid (PA) (49:4), Hex2Cer (d50:6), cardiolipin (CL) (72:8) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) (33:0e) could be used to indicate the characteristics of muscle fibres and were closely related to meat quality. Aim: To identify physical environmental factors influencing family involvement in feeding in New Zealand neonatal units. Background: Infant oral feeding development is critical for both short-term feeding skills and longer term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The neonatal environment is well-known as challenging for neuroprotection due to negative sensory exposure. The impact of environmental factors on oral feeding in New Zealand (NZ) neonatal units is currently unexplored, and knowledge of this could allow for evidence-based unit design. Methods: Focused ethnography at five neonatal units, a national survey of NZ neonatal professionals (n = 102), and five focus groups were carried out. Current oral feeding practice, and beliefs, experiences, and opinions of unit staff and family about these practices were explored. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Units were providing the best experience to families that they could with the resources they had available. Lack of physical space, lack of privacy, limited on-site accommodation for families, and lack of coordination between maternity and neonatal services were identified as impacting on family's comfort and sense of homeliness on the unit. Unit staff used furniture, screens, and external accommodation providers to support families where they could. Conclusions: The physical design of neonatal units in New Zealand provides barriers to family's spending time privately developing oral feeding. Solutions are proposed to increase the size of bedspaces, provide single-family rooms, create greater on-site family accommodation options, combine maternity and neonatal healthcare, and improve family comfort and therefore connection with their infant. An important cause of stunting is limited consumption of complementary foods, in terms of both quantities and nutrients. Although existing studies show a positive association between fathers' engagement and children's diet, programmes designed to improve complementary feeding practices often only target mothers. In response to this, maternal behaviour change communication (BCC), paternal BCC and food voucher programmes were designed and implemented in Ethiopia using a clustered randomized controlled trial design. The paternal BCC programme included gender‐equal messages to increase fathers' participation in childcare, household labour and decision making. The research reported in this paper is an examination of the BCC programmes, characterizing the behavioural, normative and control beliefs of both mothers and fathers in BCC households compared to those in control households. In this study, a total of 40 participants were included, with 13 mother–father pairs in the BCC + food voucher group, and seven pairs in the control group. Each participant was interviewed separately. We found that BCC mothers showed more gender‐equal tendencies than the control mothers despite being more rural in location. By contrast, the beliefs of BCC and control fathers were similar overall, suggesting men are more resistant to gender‐equal BCC. More work is needed to develop and test effective methods for changing fathers' beliefs and practices. Key messages: Mothers in behaviour change communication (BCC) group mothers held more gender‐equal beliefs than control mothers, while BCC and control fathers shared similar views, suggesting a male resistance to gender equality.Mothers found fathers' involvement in childcare socially acceptable but often perceived them as inexperienced, which limited their participation.Control mothers' traditional view on household chores maintained the conventional labour division, influencing fathers' involvement.Fathers typically resisted maternal control of resources; however, they agreed that the more knowledgeable should lead decision‐making. Stunting affects almost one‐quarter of children globally, leading to reduced human capacity and increased long‐term risk of chronic disease. Despite intensive infant and young child feeding (IYCF) interventions, many children do not meet their requirements for essential nutrients. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of implementing an IYCF intervention utilizing nutrient‐dense powders from egg, biofortified sugar beans and Moringa oleifera leaf in rural Zimbabwe. A mixed‐methods formative study was conducted comprising the following: (i) a recipe formulation trial, (ii) trials of improved practices to assess acceptability of the intervention, and (iii) a participatory message formulation process to develop counselling modules for the IYCF‐plus intervention. Twenty‐seven mother–baby pairs were recruited between November 2019 and April 2020. Key domains affecting IYCF practices that emerged were time, emotional and physical space, cultural and religious beliefs, indigenous knowledge systems and gender dynamics. Household observations and sensory evaluation indicated high acceptability of the new ingredients. Recipe formulation and participatory message formulation by participants instilled community ownership and served to demystify existing misconceptions about the new food products. Families noted the potential for intervention sustainability because the foods could be grown locally. Supplementing complementary foods with nutrient‐dense local food ingredients as powders has the potential to sustainably address nutrient‐gaps in the diets of young children living in rural lower‐ and middle‐income countries. Comprehensive IYCF counselling utilizing a gender‐lens approach, family support and indigenous knowledge systems or resources are key elements to support positive behaviour change in complementary feeding interventions. We assessed the prevalence of the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" in Hungary and identified possible associations of the steps with breastfeeding. Our quantitative, cross-sectional research was conducted anonymously online in Hungary with a self-administered questionnaire in 2021. Targeted sampling was used, with biological motherhood and having at least one child no older than 60 months as inclusion criteria (n = 2008). The implementation of the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" was analyzed separately for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers. A breastfeeding mother was defined as breastfeeding for at least six months. Descriptive statistics, χ2 test, and t-test were calculated with SPSSv25 (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers in terms of supplementary feeding at the advice of a health professional (p = 0.624) and in terms of assistance with breastfeeding or suggested breastfeeding positions during hospitalization (p = 0.413). Significant differences were found for receiving breastfeeding-friendly recommendations by staff (p = 0.006), valuing breastfeeding (p < 0.001), skin-to-skin contact within 1 h (p = 0.002), receiving supplementary feeding (p < 0.001), rooming-in (p < 0.001), responsive feeding, recognizing hunger signs (p < 0.001), pacifier/bottle use (p < 0.001), and availability of breastfeeding support (p = 0.005). Significant differences were observed between breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding subsamples regarding the implementation of baby-friendly steps (p < 0.001). Breastfeeding mothers experienced the implementation of more baby-friendly steps and a higher rate of breastfeeding, while there was no significant difference in the duration of exclusive (p = 0.795) and partial breastfeeding (p = 0.250) based on the results. Objectives: Published literature on children with cleft palate and/or lip (CP + /-L) and CHARGE syndrome (CS) is limited. This study investigated cleft characteristics including surgery, and feeding and communication outcomes in children identified with CP + /-L and CS. Design: Retrospective cross-sectional review. Setting: Regional Referral Centre for Paediatric Cleft Surgery. Patients: All children diagnosed with CP + /-L and CS (based on clinical features and/or CHD7 mutation testing) between 1989–2019. Main Outcome Measures: Cleft type, timing of CP + /-L repair, reasons for 'delayed' repair, feeding methods and communication modality. Results: Twenty-two children with CP + /-L and CS were identified. Cleft sub-types (%) were: Eleven (50%) had bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), six (27%) had unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and five (23%) had cleft palate (CP). Cleft repair was delayed compared to protocol care for non-syndromic children with CP + /-L. Median age for lip repair + /- vomerine flap was 9 months (range 4–22 months), and palate repair was 21 months (range 11–40 months). Median age for isolated CP repair was 13 months (range 7–23). Surgery for cardiac anomalies (36%) before cleft repair, and (59%) were classed as having severe systemic disease at the time of cleft surgery. Only 27% of the children in this study had both full oral feeding and verbal communication. Conclusions: Children with CP + /-L and CS had severe cleft types and complex medical problems leading to delayed cleft surgery. Determining the macronutrient requirements for commercially valuable aquaculture species remains crucial for maximising production efficiency. Yet, such information is lacking for Australian hybrid abalone (Haliotis rubra × Haliotis laevigata), particularly with respect to life stage and water temperatures. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary protein inclusion level on the growth performance, nutrient utilisation and nutritional quality of juvenile (3·3 g) Australian hybrid abalone reared at three different temperatures representative of winter (12°C), average annual (17°C) and summer (22°C) grow-out periods and fed five diets containing graded dietary protein levels of 35, 38, 41, 44 and 47 %. Abalone growth increased with increasing water temperature with weight gains of approximately 100, 280 and 380 % of their initial weight at 12, 17 and 22°C, respectively. Furthermore, the present study clearly demonstrated that higher dietary protein inclusion levels (41 %) than those currently used commercially (35 %) would significantly improve the growth performance when water temperatures are ≥17°C without any adverse impacts on nutrient utilisation, nutrient deposition or nutritional quality of the abalone soft tissue. For example, at 22°C abalone fed a diet containing 41 % protein obtained a significantly higher weight gain percentage (421 %) compared with those fed a diet containing 35 % protein (356 %). Lastly, it is suggested that maintaining a dietary protein inclusion level of 35 % or implementing a 'least cost' feeding approach during cooler seasons, or where water temperatures are ∼12°C, may be beneficial, considering only marginal growth improvements were observed during these periods of slow growth. The aims of the present study were to assess secular trends in breast-feeding and to explore associations between age at introduction of solid foods and breast-feeding duration. Data from three national dietary surveys in Norway were used, including infants born in 1998 (Spedkost 1, n 1537), 2006 (Spedkost 2, n 1490) and 2018 (Spedkost 3, n 1831). In all surveys, around 80 % of the infants were breastfed at 6 months of age. At 12 months of age, breast-feeding rate was 41 % in Spedkost 1, increasing to 48 % in Spedkost 2 and 51 % in Spedkost 3. Compared with earlier introduction, introduction of solid foods at ≥ 5 months of age was associated with a lower risk of breast-feeding cessation during the first year of life in the two most recent Spedkost surveys. In Spedkost 2, the adjusted hazard ratio for breast-feeding cessation during the first year of life for those introduced to solid foods at ≥ 5 months of age was 0·43 (95 % CI (0·31, 0·60)), P < 0·001, while the corresponding number in Spedkost 3 was 0·44 (95 % CI (0·29, 0·67)), P < 0·001. In conclusion, breast-feeding at infant age 12 months increased over time. Introduction of solid foods at ≥ 5 months of age was positively associated with breast-feeding duration in the two most recent Spedkost surveys. As breast-feeding contributes to numerous health benefits for infant and mother, and possibly improved dietary sustainability in infancy, findings point to the importance of continued protection, support and promotion of breast-feeding. Parental restrictive feeding and pressure to eat have been negatively associated with intuitive eating. However, parental feeding practices that promote intuitive eating are less understood. To examine caregiver feeding practices that may promote intuitive eating and the moderating effect of gender. A cross-sectional survey with 941 U.S. adults who completed the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 and recalled their primary childhood caregiver(s)' feeding practices. Ensuring the availability of healthful foods at home was associated with higher intuitive eating among both female (b = 0.147, P <.001) and male (b = 0.091, P =.018) participants. Objective: Healthcare information on YouTube is often inaccurate or insufficient. However, parents turn to social media for answers about their children's health conditions. Understanding the nature of content in specified scope of practice areas can help professionals clarify misinformation or utilize quality YouTube content in clinical context. This research examined: (1) meta-data and upload source; (2) understandability and actionability; and (3) content quality and clinical utility of YouTube videos related to speech, hearing, and feeding with children with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Design: A cross-sectional design was used. Main Outcome Measure(s): Videos related to speech, hearing, and feeding with children with CLP were obtained. Meta-data and upload source were identified. The Patient Education Material Assessment Tool-AudioVisual (PEMAT-AV) was used to assess understandability and actionability. The DISCERN instrument was used to evaluate content quality. Responses to open-ended questions were used to evaluate clinical utility. Results: Of 652 videos reviewed for potential inclusion, only 33 met the inclusion criteria. Of those, only 17 met adequate levels of both understandability and actionability. Results of DISCERN indicated that the videos were of fair quality. Analysis of clinical utility indicated that none of the videos should be used as stand-alone parent education materials. Conclusions: Videos pertaining to speech, hearing and feeding issues are not viewed as frequently as videos addressing other areas of CLP. Our findings are consistent with previous reports that the videos related to CLP may be limited in their clinical utility. Background: The management process of Enteral Nutrition (EN) typically involves the interaction between a team of health care practitioners. Nurses being the closest to the patients, have crucial responsibilities and play a major role in feeding delivery along with other medical treatments. This study was conducted to investigate the perception of the nurses working in adult and paediatric intensive care Units (ICUs) regarding the EN barriers and identify the factors that influenced their perception. Methods: The data in this cross-sectional study was collected via online survey between 15 October 2021 and January 2022. All nurses working in adult or paediatric ICUs across Saudi Arabia were eligible to participate. The tool used for the data collection was adapted from Cahill et al. (2016) and then reviewed and modified by the researchers. The survey collected information about the demographics of the nurses, and it included 24 potential EN barriers where the participants were asked to rate their importance on a scale from 1 to 5. Descriptive statistics were performed to describe the variables, univariant analysis were performed to compare the perceptions of the nurses regarding the EN barriers based on their characteristics followed by stepwise linear regression analysis. Results: A total of 136 nurses working in adult and paediatric ICUs were included in this study. The results showed that the most important barriers as perceived by the nurses was "Frequent displacement of feeding tube, requiring reinsertion" [3.29 ± 1.28], "Delays in initiating motility agents in patients not tolerating enteral nutrition" [3.27 ± 1.24] and "Enteral formula not available on the unit". Our results showed that the responses of the participants statistically varied based on their work settings, gender, region, and educational level for some items in the survey (P-value ≤ 0.05). In the regression analysis, gender was the only variable statistically influenced the total Likert rating scores of the participants (r = -0.213, p-value = 0.013). Conclusion: This study identified several barriers that exist in the nursing practice of EN in critical care settings. There are distinct differences in the perception of the nurses to these barriers based on their characteristics. Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) plays a crucial role in early childhood growth and development. This study summarizes recent IYCF practices in multiple refugee settings and compares them to those in the host countries. We analyzed 203 surveys conducted among refugees residing in 15 countries and 120 unique sites and assessed eight IYCF indicators available from those surveys. A total of 146 surveys were conducted in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) and 50 in Western and Central Africa (WCA) regions. The median prevalence across surveys of all four indicators describing intake of breast milk was relatively high: 96.6% for ever breastfed, 81.2% for initiation of breastfeeding within 1 h of birth, 76.9% for exclusive breastfeeding 0–5 months, and 75.0% for continued breastfeeding 12–23 months. The median prevalence of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding was markedly higher in ESA than in WCA (85.0% vs. 37.5% and 83.5% vs. 56.1%, respectively). Conversely, the overall median prevalence of timely introduction of solid and semisolid foods and flesh food consumption was low: 51.8% and 16.1%, respectively. Flesh food consumption was higher in WCA than in ESA (27.4% vs. 11.6%). The median prevalence of mixed milk feeding at 0–5 months and bottle feeding was very low: 2.4% and 3.8%, respectively. Indicators describing breast milk intake were generally either similar or higher in refugees than in the host country populations, whereas the other indicators were generally higher in the host populations than in refugees. The low prevalence of timely introduction of solids and of flesh food consumption in refugees is concerning and requires substantial improvement. To review the literature on the effects of unimodal sensorimotor stimulation protocols on feeding outcomes in very preterm and moderate to late preterm infants (PIs). Five databases were searched up to April 2022. Studies comparing unimodal sensorimotor stimulation protocols based on the combination of manual oral stimulation with NNS against usual care in PIs, on-time transition to full oral feeding (FOF), feeding efficacy, length of hospital stay, and/or body weight gain. Eleven studies were included. Compared to usual care, unimodal sensorimotor stimulation protocols based on manual oral stimulation combined with NNS demonstrated to be more effective in decreasing time transition to FOF (standardized mean difference [95%CI] − 1.08 [−1.74, −0.41]), improving feeding efficacy (2.15 [1.18, 3.13]) and shortening length of hospital stay (−0.35 [−0.68, −0.03]). However, the proposed intervention was not effective in improving weight gain (0.27 [−0.40, 0.95]). There were no significant differences according to gestational age (p >.05). Based on fair-to-high quality evidence, unimodal sensorimotor stimulation protocols combined with NNS reduce time transition to FOF, improve feeding efficacy, and shorten the length of hospital stay; yet the proposed intervention yielded no significant effects on body weight gain when compared to usual care in PIs. Background: The phase between a child's birth and the age of two years is crucial for ensuring the child's growth and development through optimal feeding habits. Breastfeeding is considered one of the most effective methods for ensuring the health and survival of children. Aim & Objective: This study aims to access the influence of feeding practices on childhood illness. Methodology: A crosssectional study was done among 280 mothers having children less than 2 years of age attending primary health centres adopted by the Department of Community Medicine JSS medical college, Mysuru. Data regarding feeding practices and childhood illnesses were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire prepared based in Infant and Young Child Feeding guidelines by interviewing the mothers. Result: Among the study population, 75.4% of children in urban and 75.7% of children in rural suffered from childhood illness. It was observed that childhood illness was more common among children with poor feeding practices (75.7% in rural and 93.5% in urban) and the association was found to be statistically significant. Background: Breast milk is essential for premature infants. It contains a variety of functional and protective nutrients that help to create a suitable microenvironment for intestinal development and maturation. This prospective and observational study was planned to examine the effects of feeding premature infants with fresh or frozen breastmilk on their gut microbiota. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with a total of 40 infants, with a gestational age of 28–326 weeks, fed fresh (n = 20) or frozen (n = 20) breastmilk. Stool samples were stored at −80°C until analysis. Infants were included in groups based on the feed type, which accounted for more than 70% of their 10-day feeding. The Mann-Whitney U, Chi-square, and t-tests were used to evaluate the demographic data. Stool samples were analyzed by sequencing the V3–-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene from the extracted DNA for microbiota analysis. Results: Streptococcus and Enterobacteriales, the majority of which are considered human pathogens, in infants receiving frozen breastmilk (Streptococcus 69%, Enterobacteriales 79%) was higher than that in infants receiving fresh breastmilk (Streptococcus 16%, Enterobacteriales 49%). Further, the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species were more abundant in infants who received fresh breastmilk (Lactobacillus 17%, Bifidobacterium 12%) than in infants who received frozen breastmilk (Lactobacillus 3%, Bifidobacterium 1%). Proper nutrition during the first period of life is primarily related to meeting energy needs and providing essential nutrients that ensure the infant's normal physical and psychomotor development. Improper nutrition during this period, inadequate amounts of nutrients, inappropriate timing and manner of introduction of individual foods, can permanently alter metabolism and the course of physiological processes, increasing the risk of diseases such as obesity, allergic diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to verify how the method of complementary feeding influences the occurrence of food neophobia between 2 and 7 years of age, as well as to assess the different nutritional aspects resulting from the process of starting feeding other than breast milk and milk formula. In this study, 490 mothers and their children aged 2–7 years participated. The research tool was a questionnaire consisting of a child's dietary assessment and standardized questionnaires assessing food neophobia among children: Food Neophobia Scale for Children (FNSC) and the Montreal Children's Hospital-Pediatric Feeding (MCH-FS). In the study group of children, 238 (48.57%) had no Baby-Led Weaning Method (no BLW) method used during complementary feeding (CF), and 252 (51.42%) children used Baby-Led Weaning Method (BLW). According to the FNSC questionnaire, a high risk of food neophobia was found in 32.65% of the children studied and a medium risk in 39.80%. The medium risk of feeding problem occured in 11.63% of children, the high risk in 6.73% of children, and the highest risk in 6.94% (MCH-FS). No statistically significant differences were observed between the BLW and NoBLW groups. High risk of food neophobia occured in 1/3 of the children studied, but there was no relationship in the study group between the mode of CF (BLW/NoBLW) and the risk of food neophobia. Adolescent disordered eating and obesity are interrelated and adversely relate to mental and metabolic health. Parental feeding practices have been associated with adolescent disordered eating and obesity. Yet, observable interactions related to food parenting have not been well characterized. To address this gap, N = 30 adolescents (M ± SD 14 ± 2 year) at risk for adult obesity due to above‐average body mass index (BMI ≥70th percentile) or parental obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) participated in a video‐recorded parent–adolescent task to discuss a food/eating‐related disagreement. Interactions were coded for individual/dyadic affect/content using the Interactional Dimensions Coding System. We examined associations of interaction qualities with parent‐reported food practices, adolescent disordered eating behaviors/attitudes, and insulin resistance. Reported parenting practices were correlated with multiple interaction qualities (p‐values <0.05), with the most consistent correspondence between parent‐reported pressure to eat (e.g., pressure to eat more healthy foods) and negative aspects of parent–adolescent interactions. Also, after accounting for adolescent age, sex, and BMI‐standard score, parent–adolescent interaction qualities were associated with adolescents' disordered eating and insulin resistance. Specifically, greater adolescent problem‐solving related to less adolescent global disordered eating, shape, and weight concern (p‐values <0.05); adolescent autonomy related to less weight concern (p = 0.03). Better parent communication skills were associated with less adolescent eating concern (p = 0.04), and observed dyadic mutuality related to adolescents' lower insulin resistance (p = 0.03). Parent–adolescent interaction qualities during food/eating‐related disagreements show associations with parent‐reported food practices and adolescent disordered eating. This method may offer a tool for measuring the qualities of parent–adolescent food/eating‐related interactions. Challenging eating behaviors or feeding difficulties, commonly displayed in children with Down syndrome (DS), may amplify perceived stress in caregivers. If caregivers lack resources on how to accommodate the needs of the child with DS, they may find feeding the child stressful and resort to negative coping strategies. The aim of this study was to understand the feeding stressors, resources, and coping strategies used by caregivers of children with DS. A qualitative analysis of interview transcripts was undertaken, framed around the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. Between September to November 2021, 15 caregivers of children (aged 2 through 6 years) with DS, were recruited from 5 states located in the Southeast, Southwest, and West regions of the United States. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using deductive thematic analysis and content analysis approaches. Thirteen caregivers reported increased stress around feeding the child with DS. Stressors identified included concern about adequacy of intake and challenges associated with feeding difficulties. Stress related to feeding was higher among caregivers whose child was learning a new feeding skill or in a transitional phase of feeding. Caregivers used both professional and interpersonal resources in addition to problem- and emotion-based coping strategies. Caregivers identified feeding as a stressful event with higher stress reported during transitional phases of feeding. Caregivers reported that speech, occupational, and physical therapists were beneficial resources to provide support for optimizing nutrition and skill development. To describe the evolution of swallowing and feeding abilities of neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) during hospitalisation. A longitudinal cohort study was used. Twenty-nine participants (median age 39.0 weeks [IQR = 2.0 weeks]) with mild (n = 7), moderate (n = 19) and severe (n = 3) HIE were included. Clinical swallowing and feeding assessments were conducted at introduction of oral feeds and at discharge using the Neonatal Feeding Assessment Scale (NFAS). Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) supplemented the NFAS before discharge. Approximately two thirds of participants showed symptoms of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD) during initial NFAS and VFSS. Significantly fewer OPD symptoms occurred at discharge NFAS (p = 0.004). Endurance during non-nutritive sucking (p < 0.001) and nutritive sucking (p < 0.001) significantly improved. Nine participants (31.0%) demonstrated penetration or aspiration. Most aspiration events were silent (60%). Instrumental assessment identified pharyngeal phase dysphagia more effectively than bedside evaluation. High proportions of participants displayed OPD symptoms regardless of HIE severity. The correlation between OPD severity and the length of hospitalisation (p = 0.052) was not significant. All grades of HIE should be considered for early intervention by speech-language pathologists before discharge. Findings may be valuable to neonatal feeding teams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent findings have demonstrated an increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity and overweight in Portugal, urging the need to study modifiable risk factors such as parental feeding practices. The Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ) is an important self-report measure assessing a broad range of responsive and non-responsive feeding practices. However, the CFPQ has not yet been validated in Portugal. Therefore, the present study aimed to test the validity of this measure with Portuguese parents of 2-to-8-year-old children. A sample of 409 parents completed a Portuguese-adapted version of the CFPQ and the already validated Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and psychometric analysis were conducted. CFA demonstrated the original 12-factor structure did not fit the sample. EFA identified an eight-factor structure comprising 29 items: Monitoring, Modeling, Environment, Involvement, Emotion Regulation, Restriction for Weight Control, Restriction for Health, and Pressure. Background: There is a lack of large, nationwide, birth cohort studies in Japan that examine the relationships of initial feeding habits and breastfeeding period duration with offspring functional constipation at 3 years of age. This study assessed the impact of breastfeeding during infancy on early childhood functional constipation. Methods: The fixed data of 70,078 singleton births from the ongoing Japan Environment and Children's Study cohort study that commenced in 2011 were used to identify functional constipation as estimated by Rome III at 3 years of age. The exposure variables were breastfeeding period duration until 12 months of age (never, up to 6 months, or ≥ 7 months) as well as breastfeeding status at 1 month and 6 months of age (breastfeeding exclusively, partial breastfeeding, or infant formula feeding only). Multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to search for correlations for functional constipation development with breastfeeding period duration until 12 months of age and breastfeeding status during infancy. Results: We identified 8,118 toddlers (11.6%) who met the Rome III criteria at 3 years of age. After controlling for potential covariates, a breastfeeding period duration of 7 months or more was inversely related to functional constipation development (≥ 7 months: adjusted odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval (CI)] 0.76 [0.65, 0.88] versus never breastfed, P for trend < 0.001). Other initial feeding methods were significantly related to an increased risk of functional constipation as compared with breastfeeding exclusively at 1 month of age (partial breastfeeding: adjusted OR [95% CI] 1.17 [1.11, 1.23], formula feeding only: 1.23 [1.07, 1.40]) and 6 months of age (partial breastfeeding: adjusted OR [95% CI] 1.18 [1.12, 1.24], formula feeding only: adjusted OR [95% CI] 1.42 [1.20, 1.68]). Conclusion: This large nationwide survey revealed a possible protective effect of a prolonged breastfeeding period duration and early exclusive breastfeeding in infancy on functional constipation at 3 years. Background and objectives: Belief and experience of insufficient milk supply (IBMS) are important and modifiable factors for optimal breastfeeding. However, very few people know about maternal belief, experience about breast milk supply, and how it impacts breastfeeding practice. The aim of the study is to identify the prevalence and association between mothers' belief and experience of insufficient breast milk supply with mother's knowledge regarding breast feeding. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on (1,000) participants who took six months postpartum in the primary health care centers (PHCC) and Raparin Teaching Hospital for children (RTHC) in Erbil city/Iraq. Data were collected via direct interview. The question used in the interview were developed after a review of the relevant literature. Frequency, percentage, and Chi-square were used for the purpose of data analysis. Results: In general, the study showed the prevalence of mothers' belief regarding insufficient breast milk supply was 59.8%. Also, the prevalence of a mother's experience was 78.6%. Mothers who had a poor level of knowledge regarding breastfeeding got the highest percentage, 62.2%. However, it showed the highly significant association between mothers' knowledge and mode of the last delivery with mothers' belief of insufficient breast milk supply. Moreover, there was a highly significant association between mother's experience with socio economic status. Conclusion: The majority of the mothers had belief and experience of insufficient breast milk supply (IBMS). To explore the effects of UNICEF‐suggested modifiable factors, that is, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), early adequate feeding and health care on child malnutrition, and to examine the extent to which each factor contributes to urban–rural disparities of child malnutrition in China. Pooling two waves of regionally representative survey data from Jilin, China, in 2013 and 2018, we report on urban–rural relative risks (RRs) in the prevalence of child stunting, wasting and overweight. We employ Poisson regression to examine the effects of urban–rural setting and the three modifiable factors on the prevalence of each malnutrition outcome, that is, stunting, wasting and overweight. We perform mediation analyses to estimate the extent to which each modifiable factor could explain the urban–rural disparities in each malnutrition outcome. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and overweight were 10.9%, 6.3% and 24.7% in urban, and 27.9%, 8.2% and 35.9% in rural Jilin, respectively. The rural to urban crude RR was 2.55 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.92–3.39) for stunting, while the corresponding RRs for wasting and overweight were 1.31 (95% CI: 0.84–2.03) and 1.45 (95% CI: 1.20–1.76), respectively. The rural to urban RR for stunting reduced to 2.01 (95% CI: 1.44–2.79) after adjusting for WASH. The mediation analyses show that WASH could mediate 23.96% (95% CI: 4.34–43.58%) of the urban–rural disparities for stunting, while early adequate feeding and health care had no effects. To close the persistent urban–rural gap in child malnutrition, the specific context of rural China suggests that a multi‐sectoral approach is warranted that focuses on the sanitation environment and other wider social determinants of health. Key messages: The enormous urban–rural disparities in child malnutrition hinder acheivement of the WHO goals. But little is known about to what extent modifiable factors, that is, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), early adequate feeding and access to health care explain urban–rural differences in real‐world settings.We report on the double burden of child malnutrition in rural China, where we find that WASH was the single most important factor that explained a large proportion(24.0%) of urban–rural differences in child stunting.Our finding suggests a multi‐sectoral approach that focuses on wider social determinants of health, in particular environmental sanitation for a change. Nutrients have an enormous impact on many hormonal systems and aspects of health, and nutrition status is a crucial regulator of growth and pubertal development in children and adolescents. In this narrative review, we explore the connection between these feeding methods and the timing of puberty to provide a clearer understanding of how infant nutrition might contribute to the early development of puberty. Puberty is a key stage in the transition from childhood to adulthood and the timing of puberty represents a significant biological milestone of growth. Breast milk seems to have a pivotal role in puberty onset, mainly due to its dynamism, which shape indirectly the gut microbiota in early life, besides direct exposure of the baby to the milk microbiota through gut–breast axis. Concerning breast and formula milk and their effects on the onset of puberty, a protective role of the former occurs. As for the potential harmful effects of soy-based formulas and the isoflavones that they contain, the studies reported demonstrate conflicting opinions, underlining the need for further research on this topic. A healthy and well-nourished diet from the earliest stages of life has significant preventive potential for overall well-being, reducing the risk of many health problems later in life. Background: Inadequate breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices are key determinants of child malnutrition and impact one-third of the under-five mortality rate worldwide. The district of Namuno in Cabo Delgado (Mozambique) has been long registering a high prevalence of acute malnutrition. To date, no data exists about Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices in the area. The current pilot study explores the feeding practices among children aged 0–23 months in Namuno and sets out its main drivers. Methods: This cross-sectional study was realized between August and September 2019 and drew on questionnaires for mothers/caregivers of children aged 0 to 23 months. We computed IYCF indicators and correlated them with mothers'/caregivers' school attendance, delivery setting, and distance between home and the place where livelihood activities took place (workplace), using univariate and multivariate (age-adjusted) logistic regression analysis. Results: The survey was data derived from a sample of 632 mothers/caregivers. 62% of 0–23-month-old children received colostrum whilst only 31% of 0–5 months babies were on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Among 6–23 months old children, 17% consumed foods and beverages from at least five out of eight defined food groups, 31% received a minimum frequency of meals, and 23% had a minimum acceptable diet. Data revealed a positive correlation between early initiation of breastfeeding and delivery in a maternity ward (OR 6.9, CI 3.2–16.1, p-value < 0.001). No difference in the IYCF indicators between female and male babies was detected. Conclusions: In the Namuno district, IYCF practices did not fulfill WHO/UNICEF's indicators and recommendations. Background: Global and Indonesian guidelines suggest that breastfeeding should continue for at least the first two years of life. While many studies have focused on six-month exclusive breastfeeding practices, little is known about why mothers do not sustain breastfeeding beyond this period. This qualitative study aimed to explore factors influencing breastfeeding continuation and formula feeding beyond six months, regardless of any additional food consumed, focusing on Indonesia's rural and urban areas. Methods: We collected the data through 46 in-depth interviews in Pati District and Surakarta City, Central Java, Indonesia. Participants were mothers, grandmothers, health care practitioners, and village kader (frontline female health workers). We used thematic analysis combining deductive and inductive techniques for analysing the data. Results: Rural mothers practised breastfeeding and intended to breastfeed for a longer duration than urban mothers. Maternal attitude towards breastfeeding, breastfeeding knowledge, previous experiences, and other breastfeeding strategies (e.g., enhancing maternal dietary quality) positively influenced breastfeeding sustainability. In the urban setting, mothers encountered several breastfeeding barriers, such as perceived breast milk insufficiency and child hunger and satiety, child biting, and breastfeeding refusal, causing them to provide formula milk as a breast milk substitute or supplement. In addition, families, communities, health practitioners, and employment influenced maternal decisions in breastfeeding continuation and formula-feeding practices. Conclusions: Optimal breastfeeding practices up to two years of age are determined by the individual and setting (i.e., community, healthcare, employment) factors. Providing breastfeeding education covering practical breastfeeding guidance will encourage mothers to breastfeed for longer. Such interventions should involve families, communities, health workers, and the work environment as a breastfeeding support system. Policymakers should develop, enforce, and monitor the implementation of breastfeeding policies to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding in households, communities, health systems, and work settings.
