In this article the author discusses how the online environments have been irretrievably altered. To research a school project when I was a teenager, I traveled across town to the big public library. A decade later, enrolled in a library school just down the street from the big library, I discovered electronic access to information and a thing called Dialog. Suddenly, I could reach my electronic hand behind the librarians guarding those closed stacks and pull out data. It was not all that long in coming, however. Online databases soon expanded to include access to the full text of articles from many sources, company directories, and government documents. As access expanded, retrieval took center stage. Information retrieval in the 1980s and 1990s was synonymous with online searching. The early days of online, I now realize, were somewhat akin to closed stacks. Today, the online environment is about sharing. Online discussion lists and blogs encourage the sharing of thoughts, opinions, expertise, and even links to journal articles. As information sharing supplants owning, accessing and retrieving it, I think the essential role of the information professional is vindicated.

The database also got a new name of IAC Business ARTS, which stands for Applied Research, Theory and Scholarship, reflecting the social, cultural, political and psychological aspects of this business resource. IAC Business ARTS provides in-depth coverage of important research topics not found in most traditional business databases-topics such as economic theories and models, public affairs, higher education, cross-cultural studies, public policy and administration, media analysis, the sociology of the workplace, technology and culture, business ethics and societal change. Also featured are articles containing essays, debates, criticism, poetry, quotations, speeches, transcripts, equations and formulae, which complement and add dimension to the typical business search.

The article discusses the availability of Dialog databases on Westlaw. Initially some researchers were unfamiliar with the service, or thought of Dialog primarily as a vendor of bibliographic and databank information. This article reports on the plan of Data Courier to cease the production of its Advertising Computer Technologies (ACT I and ACT II) databases by December 1986 if University Microfilms International does not find a buyer for the files. This article reports that Responsive Database Services Inc. (RDS), a new database publishing company in Beachwood, Ohio, has announced the premiere of its first database, titled "Business&Industry." Business&Industry, reportedly, will be available next month on Knight-Ridder Information Inc.'s DIALOG and DataStar services. RDS was founded in 1994 by Dick Harris, former president of Predicasts, who has assembled a team of experienced information professionals from all segments of the information industry.
