Context: Aberrant movement patterns among individuals with concussion history have been reported during sport-related movement. However, the acute postconcussion kinematic and kinetic biomechanical movement patterns during a rapid acceleration–deceleration task have not been profiled and leaves their progressive trajectory unknown. Our study aimed to examine single-leg hop stabilization kinematics and kinetics between concussed and healthy-matched controls acutely (≤7 d) and when asymptomatic (≤72 h of symptom resolution). Design: Prospective, cohort laboratory study. Methods: Ten concussed (60% male; 19.2 [0.9] y; 178.7 [14.0] cm; 71.3 [18.0] kg) and 10 matched controls (60% male; 19.5 [1.2] y; 176.1 [12.6] cm; 71.0 [17.0] kg) completed the single-leg hop stabilization task under single and dual task (subtracting by 6's or 7's) at both time points. Participants stood on a 30-cm tall box set 50% of their height behind force plates while in an athletic stance. A synchronized light was illuminated randomly, queuing participants to initiate the movement as rapidly as possible. Participants then jumped forward, landed on their nondominant leg, and were instructed to reach and maintain stabilization as fast as possible upon ground contact. We used 2 (group) × 2 (time) mixed-model analyses of variance to compare single-leg hop stabilization outcomes separately during single and dual task. Results: We observed a significant main group effect for single-task ankle plantarflexion moment, with greater normalized torque (mean difference = 0.03 N·m/body weight; P =.048, g = 1.18) for concussed individuals across time points. A significant interaction effect for single-task reaction time indicated that concussed individuals had slower performance acutely relative to asymptomatic (mean difference = 0.09 s; P =.015, g = 0.64), while control group performance was stable. No other main or interaction effects for single-leg hop stabilization task metrics were present during single and dual task (P ≥.051). Conclusions: Greater ankle plantarflexion torque coupled with slower reaction time may indicate stiff, conservative single-leg hop stabilization performance acutely following concussion. Our findings shed preliminary light on the recovery trajectories of biomechanical alterations following concussion and provide specific kinematic and kinetic focal points for future research. Background: Emergency ward nurses face a variety of occupational hazards due to the nature of their occupational and professional duties, which can negatively affect their health. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of an educational intervention based on the protection motivation theory on the protective behaviors of emergency ward nurses against occupational hazards in Tehran, Iran, in 2023. Methods: The present quasi-experimental study was conducted with two intervention and control groups, using a pretest-posttest design. A total of 124 nurses working in the emergency wards of four hospitals (two hospitals for the intervention group and two hospitals for the control group by random assignment) were selected by multistage sampling method. The educational intervention based on the protection motivation theory was implemented for the intervention group for three weeks. The nurses of both groups completed a demographic questionnaire and the scale of emergency ward nurses' protective behaviors against occupational hazards before, immediately, and one month after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential methods. Results: The two groups were similar in terms of demographic characteristics at the baseline (p > 0.05). Protective behaviors of emergency nurses against occupational hazards and their sub-scales (physical, chemical, biological, ergonomics, and psychosocial hazards) were higher in the intervention group than in the control group immediately and one month after the educational intervention. In addition, the measurement over time also showed the positive effect of time and educational intervention on the protective behaviors of emergency nurses against occupational hazards and their sub-scales in the intervention group. Conclusion: These findings showed that the educational intervention based on the protection motivation theory can be effective and helpful in improving the protective behaviors of emergency ward nurses against occupational hazards and their sub-scales. To evaluate the balance in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and knee osteoarthrosis (KOA), measured by postural stability computerized evaluation (PSCE), and to evaluate the effect of post-TKA patients' characteristics in their performance on PSCE. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in two sets of patients: (A) patients with KOA and primary TKA surgery scheduled and (B) patients who underwent primary TKA >9 months. Sociodemographic, radiographic, clinical and PSCE parameters (using the Biodex Balance System) were assessed. Post-TKA patients placed more load on the replaced knee than the contralateral osteoarthritic knee (p = 0.027). They had less imbalance on the balance tests performed with the eyes open, on stable (p = 0.032), and unstable platforms (p = 0.022). These patients also showed better postural stability in monopodalic stance, both standing on the TKA (p = 0.010) and contralateral knee (p = 0.017). Age, weight, pain on the operated knee, extension deficit on the operated knee, and Berg Balance Scale scores on post-TKA patients were significantly associated with their performance on PSCE tests. PSCE can be useful to quantify the balance of post-TKA and KOA patients. Total knee arthroplasty is the definitive treatment for knee osteoarthrosis and it has several benefits, but its effect on balance is still unknown. Postural stability computerized evaluation is used to evaluate balance on vestibular diseases and it has been recently studied on musculoskeletal conditions. Background: A proportion of head and neck carcinomas (HNSCCs) are induced by high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and are associated with better patient outcomes compared to patients with HNSCCs related to tobacco and alcohol abuse. In the microenvironment of solid tumors, including HNSCCs, oxygen levels are often reduced, and a hypoxic state is induced. This can lead to a poor treatment response and a worse patient prognosis. One of the hypoxia-responsive genes is aspartate-β-hydroxylase (ASPH), whose activity promotes the growth, invasiveness, and metastasis of many types of solid tumors. Methods: In our study, HNSCC samples were analyzed for the expression of ASPH and selected endogenous hypoxia markers by real-time PCR and/or multiplex fluorescence immunohistochemistry. Results: Except for the EPAS1 gene, which had higher mRNA expression in the HPV-negative group of HNSCC (p < 0.05), we found no other differences in the expression of the tested genes that were related to HPV status. On the contrary, a statistically significantly higher number of cells producing ASPH (p < 0.0001), HIF1A (p < 0.0001), GLUT1 (p < 0.0001), and MMP13 (p < 0.05) proteins were detected in the HPV-positive tumor group than in the HPV-negative sample group. All the evaluated markers, except for MMP9/13, were more abundant in the tumor parenchyma than in the tumor stroma. The Cox proportional hazard models showed that increased numbers of cells with GLUT1 and HIF1A protein expression were positive prognostic markers for overall and disease-specific survival in patients independent of HPV tumor status. Conclusion: The study examined HNSCC samples and found that elevated ASPH and hypoxia marker proteins, typically associated with poor prognosis, may actually indicate active HPV infection, the strongest prognostic factor in HNSCC patients. Background: Ankle fractures are frequent, and despite numerous publications on their treatment and outcome, there is a lack of precise data on the functional results in young, healthy and physically active patients. We hypothesized that patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for simple ankle fractures would have similar function compared to a healthy control group, whereas patients with complex fractures will have significant functional deficits. Furthermore, we postulate that there is a discrepancy between the radiological and the functional outcomes. Methods: A set of specific provocation tests was developed to evaluate the postoperative possibility of weight bearing, stop-and-go activities and range of motion. In combination with three questionnaires and a radiographic evaluation, the true functional outcome and the possibility of participating in sporting activities were investigated and compared with those of an age- and sex-matched control group. Results: A significant impairment was found in unilateral and simple ankle fractures. This impairment increased in tests including stop-and-go activities in combination with load bearing and with the complexity of the fractures. Concerning the subjective outcome, there was a significant adverse effect for daily activities without any difference in preoperative or postoperative sporting activity between the groups. No difference was found in the radiological assessment. Conclusions: Both simple and complex ankle fractures treated with ORIF have a significant and long-lasting impact on functional outcome in young and active patients. Purpose: Persistent microvascular obstruction (MVO) after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been well‐described. MVO predicts lack of recovery of left ventricular function and increased mortality. Sonothrombolysis utilizing diagnostic ultrasound induced cavitation of commercially available microbubble contrast has been effective at reducing infarct size and improving left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) when performed both pre‐ and post‐PCI. However, the effectiveness of post‐PCI sonothrombolysis alone after successful PCI has not been demonstrated. Methods: A prospective randomized controlled trial was performed in 50 consecutive consenting patients with anterior STEMI who underwent a continuous microbubble infusion immediately following successful PCI. Intermittent high mechanical index (MI) impulses were applied only in the sonthrombolysis group. Delayed enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed at 48 h and again at 6–8 weeks to assess for differences in infarct size, LVEF, and MVO. Results: There were no differences between groups in age, gender, and cardiovascular risk factors. Significant (> 2 segments) MVO following successful PCI was observed in 66% of patients. Although sonothrombolysis reduced the extent of MVO acutely, there were no differences in infarct size, LVEF, or extent of MVO by MRI at 48 h. Twenty‐eight patients returned for a follow up MRI at 6–8 weeks. LVEF improved only in the sonothrombolysis group (∆LVEF 7.81 ± 4.57% with sonothrombolysis vs. 1.77 ± 7.02% for low MI only, p =.011). Conclusion: Post‐PCI sonothrombolysis had minimal effect on reducing myocardial infarct size but improved left ventricular systolic function in patients with acute anterior wall STEMI. This study aimed to determine the effect of fluid management, symptom control, and quality of life on education based on the Roy Adaptation Model. This randomized controlled study was conducted with the participation of 107 patients (53 intervention, 54 control). Data were collected using the "Patient Data Collection Form," "Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale," "Dialysis Symptom Index," and "Nottingham Health Profile." The forms were filled out through face-to-face interviews with the patients in the intervention and control groups at the 0th (onset), 1st, and 3rd months. The patients in the intervention group were trained with an education booklet based on the Roy Adaptation Model. The results revealed that the education given according to the Roy Adaptation Model improved the compliance with fluid control, quality of life, and symptom control of hemodialysis patients. It is recommended that education based on the Roy Adaptation Model be systematically used by hemodialysis nurses. Simple Summary: Our findings confirm the role of developmental aspects in extracranial germ cell tumors (eGCTs). Strong associations between syndromes or congenital anomalies and eGCTs may hint at the need for research to identify potential causes and mechanisms. Strong effects were observed for Swyer and Currarino syndrome. The strengths of the associations emphasize the need for further elaboration on presently discussed pathophysiological mechanisms. For other suggested risk factors such as Klinefelter, Turner, and Down syndrome, the strength of risk appears to be substantially low and may be missed because of diagnostic bias for the first two or lack of power for the latter. A number of further syndromes were identified in single cases. Most of these pertain to girls. GCTs are developmental tumors and are likely to reflect ontogenetic and teratogenetic determinants. The objective of this study was to identify syndromes with or without congenital anomalies and non-syndromic defects as potential risk factors. Patients with extracranial GCTs (eGCTs) registered in MAKEI 96/MAHO 98 between 1996 and 2017 were included. According to Teilum's holistic concept, malignant and benign teratomas were registered. We used a case–control study design with Orphanet as a reference group for syndromic defects and the Mainz birth registry (EUROCAT) for congenital anomalies at birth. Co-occurring genetic syndromes and/or congenital anomalies were assessed accordingly. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated and p-values for Fisher's exact test with Bonferroni correction if needed. A strong association was confirmed for Swyer (OR 338.6, 95% CI 43.7–2623.6) and Currarino syndrome (OR 34.2, 95% CI 13.2–88.6). We additionally found 16 isolated cases of eGCT with a wide range of syndromes. However, these were not found to be significantly associated following Bonferroni correction. Most of these cases pertained to girls. Regarding non-syndromic defects, no association with eGCTs could be identified. Introduction: High mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) is a member of the molecular family known as damage-associated molecular patterns, which is implicated to have a role in neuroinflammation processes. In recent years, a growing number of studies have focused on the role of inflammation in Bipolar Disorder (BD). This study aimed to investigate the serum levels of HMGB1 and other inflammatory markers in patients with bipolar manic episodes compared to those in healthy controls (HC). Methods: A single-center, observational, case-control study was conducted. Thirty-five patients with BD in manic episodes and 35 HC were assessed. Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) was used to assess the symptom severity of the patient group. While inflammatory markers (such as HMGB1, C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell count) were assessed at the first three and the last day of hospitalization in the patient group, they were evaluated once in HC. Levels of inflammatory markers were compared between (patient-HC) and within groups (before-after treatment). Results: No difference was observed in serum HMGB1 levels of bipolar patients with manic episodes compared to the HC (p>0.05). C-reactive protein levels of manic patients were higher than HC (p<0.001), and the difference persisted even after treatment (p=0.007). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between CRP levels and antipsychotic drug dosage (r=0.382, p=0.024). Conclusion: There were no differences in HMGB1 levels between bipolar patients with acute manic episode and HC. BACKGROUND: Providing effective health education is essential for patients with cancer-related pain. One solution is leveraging instant messaging tools for teach-back health education. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of WeChat-based teach-back health education on patients with advanced cancer who underwent patient-controlled intrathecal analgesia implantation and used hydromorphone. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 150 hospitalized patients with advanced cancer pain. Patients were classified into a conventional health education group (N = 50) and a teach-back group (N = 100) based on whether they received WeChatbased teach-back health education. Pain was rated using a numeric rating scale, and sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index at one, two, and three months postdischarge. FINDINGS: Patients who received remote teachback health education better managed their pain. Data also demonstrated improvements in patients' sleep quality and caregiver satisfaction, and reductions in the occurrence of adverse reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study was to validate the Delirium Observation Screening Scale (DOSS) in a population of long‐term care facility (LTCF) residents in Flanders. Currently there is no validated screening tool for delirium available for the population in this setting in Flanders. Methods: A multisite, cross‐sectional study was conducted in six LTCFs. A total of 338 residents aged 65 years and older were included. Sociodemographic and clinical data, including data from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) and DOSS, were obtained by three trained nurse researchers. For the DOSS, internal consistency was determined, and inter‐rater reliability was calculated. To validate the DOSS, the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of the DOSS relative to the CAM were determined through receiver operating characteristic analysis. This article adheres to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies (STROBE) checklist for observational research. Results: For 338 residents, delirium assessments were completed during an early or late shift. The prevalence of delirium was 14.2% as measured with the DOSS. The reliability (α) for the CAM and DOSS was assessed, as was the inter‐rater reliability (κ) and the area under the curve. The sensitivity and specificity for a cut‐off value of 3 on the DOSS by Youden's index were very high, as was the negative predictive value. The positive predictive value was good. Background: Spinopelvic parameters, including pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), and pelvic incidence, have been developed to characterize the relationship between lumbar spine and hip motion, but a paucity of literature is available characterizing differences in spinopelvic parameters among patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) versus patients without FAIS, as well as the effect of these parameters on outcomes of arthroscopic treatment of FAIS. Purpose: To (1) identify differences in spinopelvic parameters between patients with FAIS versus controls without FAIS; (2) identify associations between spinopelvic parameters and preoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs); and (3) identify differences in PROs between patients with stiff spines (standing-sitting ΔSS ≤10°) versus those without. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: The study enrolled patients ≥18 years of age who underwent primary hip arthroscopy for treatment of FAIS with cam, pincer, or mixed (cam and pincer) morphology. Participants underwent preoperative standing-sitting imaging with a low-dose 3-dimensional radiography system and were matched on age and body mass index (BMI) to controls without FAIS who also underwent EOS imaging. Spinopelvic parameters measured on EOS films were compared between the FAIS and control groups. Patients with FAIS completed the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) and Non-Arthritic Hip Score (NAHS) before surgery and at 1-year follow-up. Outcome scores were compared between patients with stiff spines versus those without. Associations between spinopelvic parameters and baseline outcome scores were assessed with Pearson correlations. Continuous variables were compared with Student t test and/or Mann-Whitney U test, and categorical variables were compared with Fisher exact test. Results: A total of 50 patients with FAIS (26 men; 24 women; mean age, 36.1 ± 10.7 years; mean BMI, 25.6 ± 4.2) were matched to 30 controls without FAIS (13 men; 17 women; mean age, 36.6 ± 9.5 years; mean BMI, 26.7 ± 3.6). Age, sex, and BMI were not significantly different between the FAIS and control groups (P >.05). Standing PT was not significantly different between stiff and non-stiff cohorts (P =.73), but sitting PT in the FAIS group was more than double that of the control group (36.5° vs 15.0°; P <.001). Incidence of stiff spine was significantly higher in the FAIS group (62.0% vs 3.3%; P <.001). Among FAIS patients, those with stiff spines had a significantly higher prevalence of cam impingement, whereas those with non–stiff spines had a higher prevalence of mixed impingement (P =.04). No significant differences were seen in preoperative mHHS or NAHS scores or pre- to postoperative improvement in scores between FAIS patients with stiff spines versus those without (P >.05), but a greater sitting SS was found to be positively correlated with a higher baseline mHHS (r = 0.36; P =.02). Conclusion: Patients with FAIS were more likely to have a stiff spine (standing-sitting ΔSS ≤10°) compared with control participants without FAIS. FAIS patients with stiff spines were more likely to have isolated cam morphology than patient without stiff spines. Although sitting SS was positively correlated with baseline mHHS, no significant differences were seen in 1-year postoperative outcomes between FAIS patients with versus without stiff spine. Purpose: Evidence is growing that high salt intake is an independent risk factor for obesity, but the mechanisms are unknown. Our novel working hypothesis is that high salt intake drives cortisol production, which in turn, drives obesity. The current study aimed to demonstrate an acute cortisol response following a single high salt meal. Methods: Eight participants (age 30.5 ± 9.8 years [mean ± SD], 50% female), consumed high salt (3.82 g; 1529 mg sodium) and low salt (0.02 g; 9 mg sodium) meals in a randomized cross-over design. Results: Urinary and salivary cortisol and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) demonstrated order effects. When high salt was given second, there was a peak above baseline for urinary cortisol (26.3%), salivary cortisol (9.4%) and plasma ACTH (4.1%) followed by a significant decline in each hormone (treatment*time, F[9, 18] = 2.641, p = 0.038, partial η2 = 0.569; treatment*time, F[12, 24] = 2.668, p = 0.020, partial η2 = 0.572; treatment*time, F[12, 24] = 2.580, p = 0.023, partial η2 = 0.563, respectively), but not when high salt was given first (p > 0.05 for all). Conclusion : These intriguing findings provide partial support for our hypothesis and support a need for further research to elucidate the role of high salt intake in cortisol production and, in turn, in the aetiology of obesity. Purpose: Previous studies have demonstrated impaired cerebellar function in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with impaired cognition. However, the effects of OSA on resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in the cerebellum has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate resting-state FC of the cerebellar subregions and its relevance to clinical symptoms in patients with OSA. Methods: Sixty-eight patients with OSA and seventy-two healthy controls (HCs) were included in the study. Eight subregions of the cerebellum were selected as regions of interest, and the FC values were calculated for each subregion with other voxels. A correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between clinical and cognitive data. Results: Patients with OSA showed higher FC in specific regions, including the right lobule VI with the right posterior middle temporal gyrus and right angular gyrus, the right Crus I with the bilateral precuneus/left superior parietal lobule, and the right Crus II with the precuneus/right posterior cingulate cortex. Furthermore, the oxygen depletion index was negatively correlated with aberrant FC between the right Crus II and the bilateral precuneus / right posterior cingulate cortex in OSA patients (p = 0.004). Conclusion: The cerebellum is functionally lateralized and closely linked to the posterior default mode network. Higher FC is related to cognition, emotion, language, and sleep in OSA. Abnormal FC may offer new neuroimaging evidence and insights for a deeper comprehension of OSA-related alterations. This study reveals altered resting-state functional connectivity in the cerebellum (8 cerebellar subregions) of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Introduction: Fixation of mesh during minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair is thought to contribute to chronic post-herniorrhaphy groin pain (CGP). In contrast to permanent tacks, absorbable tacks are hypothesized to minimize the likelihood of CGP. This study aimed to compare the rates of CGP after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair between absorbable versus permanent fixation at maximum follow-up. Methods: This is a post hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial in patients undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (NCT03835351). All patients were contacted at maximum follow-up after surgery to administer EuraHS quality of life (QoL) surveys. The pain and restriction of activity subdomains of the survey were utilized. The primary outcome was rate of CGP, as defined by a EuraHS QoL pain domain score ≥ 4 measured at ≥ 1 year postoperatively. The secondary outcomes were pain and restriction of activity domain scores and hernia recurrence at maximum follow-up. Results: A total of 338 patients were contacted at a mean follow-up of 28 ± 11 months. 181 patients received permanent tacks and 157 patients received absorbable tacks during their repair. At maximum follow-up, the rates of CGP (27 [15%] vs 28 [18%], P = 0.47), average pain scores (1.78 ± 4.38 vs 2.32 ± 5.40, P = 0.22), restriction of activity scores (1.39 ± 4.32 vs 2.48 ± 7.45, P = 0.18), and the number of patients who reported an inguinal bulge (18 [9.9%] vs 15 [9.5%], P = 0.9) were similar between patients with permanent versus absorbable tacks. On multivariable analysis, there was no significant difference in the odds of CGP between the two groups (OR 1.23, 95% CI [0.60, 2.50]). Conclusion: Mesh fixation with permanent tacks does not appear to increase the risk of CGP after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair when compared to fixation with absorbable tacks. Background: Pancreatic fistula (PF) is one of the most serious postoperative complications of gastrectomy. Misidentification of the boundary between the pancreas and the dissected fat is a primary concern. In this study, we focused on differences in the appearance of the pancreas and the dissected fat in actual surgical images and statistically analyzed the relationship between the pancreas and the dissected fat. Methods: We analyzed data from 109 gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy between November 2018 and March 2023. Intraoperative images were taken from videos of lymph node dissections of Nos.6 and 8a regions, and the mean gray value of the areas was measured using ImageJ software for analysis. The visceral fat area (VFA) was evaluated by preoperative axial CT at the umbilical level using Ziostation software. Results: A significant correlation was observed between the fat/pancreas gray value ratio in the No.8a lymph node region and the drain/serum amylase ratio (P < 0.001). The fat/pancreas gray value ratio in the No.6 lymph node region correlated with VFA (P < 0.001). The VFA and drain/serum amylase ratio were significantly higher in the group with intra-abdominal complications (P = 0.004). Conclusions: We revealed significant relationships between the fat/pancreas gray value ratio with drain/serum amylase and VFA. Background: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) often induces significant postoperative pain, potentially leading to chronic pain and decreased quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the acetaminophen/ibuprofen combination effectiveness in reducing analgesic requirements and pain intensity in patients undergoing VATS. Study design: This is a double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Methods: Adult patients scheduled for elective VATS for lung resection were randomized to receive either intravenous acetaminophen and ibuprofen (intervention group) or 100 mL normal saline (control group). Treatments were administered post-anesthesia induction and every 6 h for three cycles. The primary outcome was total analgesic consumption at 24 h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes were cumulative analgesic consumption at 2 and 48 h; analgesic-related side effects at 2, 24, and 48 h; quality of recovery at 24 h and 48 h postoperatively; pain intensity at rest and during coughing; and rescue analgesics use. Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) was assessed through telephone interviews 3 months postoperatively. Results: The study included 96 participants. The intervention group showed significantly lower analgesic consumption at 24 h and 48 h postoperatively (24 h: median difference: − 100 µg equivalent intravenous fentanyl [95% confidence interval (CI) − 200 to − 5 μg], P = 0.037; 48 h: median difference: − 140 μg [95% CI − 320 to − 20 μg], P = 0.035). Compared to the controls, the intervention group exhibited a significantly lower quality of recovery 24 h post-surgery, with no significant difference at 48 h. All pain scores except for coughing at 48 h post-surgery were significantly lower in the intervention group compared to the controls. No significant differences were observed between the groups in postoperative nausea and vomiting occurrence, hospital stay length, and CPSP. Conclusion: Perioperative administration of acetaminophen/ibuprofen significantly decreased analgesic needs in patients undergoing VATS, providing an effective postoperative pain management strategy, and potentially minimizing the need for stronger analgesics. Objectives Our previous study showed that resveratrol (Res) attenuates apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction in alveolar epithelial cell injury induced by hyperoxia by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway. In the present study, we investigated whether Res protects against hyperoxia-induced lung injury in neonatal rats by activating SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway. Methods Naturally delivered neonatal rats were randomly divided into six groups: normoxia + normal saline, normoxia + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), normoxia + Res, hyperoxia + normal saline, hyperoxia + DMSO, and hyperoxia + Res. Lung tissue samples were collected on postnatal days 1, 7, and 14. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to evaluate lung development. Dual-immunofluorescence staining, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting were used to evaluate the levels of silencing information regulator 2-related enzyme 1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α), nuclear respiratory factor 1 (Nrf1), Nrf2, transcription factor A (TFAM) and citrate synthase, the number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and mitochondria, the integrity of mtDNA, and the expression of TFAM in mitochondria. Results We found that hyperoxia insulted lung development, whereas Res attenuated the hyperoxia lung injury. Res significantly upregulated the levels of SIRT1, PGC-1α, Nrf1, Nrf2, TFAM, and citrate synthase; promoted TFAM expression in the mitochondria; and increased the copy number of ND1 and the ratio of ND4/ND1. Conclusion Our data suggest that Res attenuates hyperoxia-induced lung injury in neonatal rats, and this was achieved, in part, by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway to promote mitochondrial biogenesis. Background: Dietitians are central members of the multidisciplinary long‐term care (LTC) healthcare team. The overall aim of this current investigation is to gain a better understanding of dietitian involvement in LTC resident's end‐of‐life care via referrals. Methods: Retrospective chart reviews for 164 deceased residents (mean age = 88.3 ± 7.3; 61% female) in 18 LTC homes in Ontario, Canada, identified dietitian referrals and documented eating challenges recorded over 2‐week periods at four time points (i.e., 6 months, 3 months, 1 month and 2 weeks) prior to death. Nutrition care plans at the beginning of these time points were also noted. Logistic mixed effects regression models identified time‐varying predictors of dietitian referrals. Bivariate tests identified associations between nutrition orders and dietitian referrals that occurred in the last month of life. Results: Nearly three‐quarters (73%) of participants had at least one dietitian referral across the four observations. Referrals increased significantly with proximity to death; 45% of residents had a referral documented in the last 2 weeks of life. Dietitian referrals were associated with the number of eating challenges (odds ratio [OR] = 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.27, 1.58). Comfort‐focused nutrition care orders were significantly more common when a dietitian was referred (25%) compared with when a dietitian was not referred (12%) in the final month of life (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that dietitians are involved in end‐of‐life and comfort‐focused nutrition care initiatives, yet they are not engaged consistently for this purpose. This presents a significant opportunity for dietitians to upskill and champion palliative approaches to nutrition care within the multidisciplinary LTC team. Background: Management of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is complex requiring contributions from multiple specialized disciplines. In practice, this creates considerable organizational and communicational challenges. To meet those challenges, we established an interdisciplinary integrated outpatient clinic for IIH with a central coordination and a one-stop- concept. Here, we aimed to evaluate effects of this concept on sick leave, presenteeism, and health care utilization. Methods: In a retrospective cohort study, we compared the one-stop era with integrated care (IC, 1-JUL-2021 to 31-DEC-2022) to a reference group receiving standard care (SC, 1-JUL-2018 to 31-DEC-2019) regarding economic outcome parameters assessed over 6 months. Multivariate binary logistic regression models were used to adjust for confounders. Results: Baseline characteristics of the IC group (n = 85) and SC group (n = 81) were comparable (female: 90.6% vs. 90.1%; mean age: 33.6 vs. 32.8 years, educational level: ≥9 years of education 60.0% vs. 59.3%; located in Vienna 75.3% vs. 76.5%). Compared to SC, the IC group showed significantly fewer days with sick leave or presenteeism (-5 days/month), fewer unscheduled contacts for IIH-specific problems (-2.3/month), and fewer physician or hospital contacts in general (-4.1 contacts/month). Subgroup analyses of patients with migration background and language barrier consistently indicated stronger effects of the IC concept in these groups. Conclusions: Interdisciplinary integrated management significantly improves the burden of IIH in terms of sick leave, presenteeism and healthcare consultations – particularly in socioeconomically underprivileged patient groups. Most studies on nursing students' awareness and knowledge of child abuse and neglect (CAN) report insufficient knowledge. However, there are limited studies evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Program (CANAP) on nursing students on their CAN knowledge and awareness levels. A randomized controlled study was conducted between 21 May and 29 June 29, with 75 students, 40 in the experimental group and 35 in the control group, studying nursing at a foundation university in Turkey. While CANAP was applied to the participants in the experimental group, no intervention was applied to those in the control group. The data were collected in three stages (before the intervention, immediately after the intervention and 1 month after the intervention) using the Personal Information Form, Diagnosis Scale of the Risks and Symptoms of Child Abuse and Neglect (DSRSCAN) and Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Scale (CANA‐S). Data were analysed using Chi‐square and Fisher exact tests, independent samples t test and repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The groups were homogeneous regarding the students' sociodemographic characteristics (p > 0.05). In the study, the mean DSRSCAN and CANA‐S scores of the groups were similar in the pre‐test before CANAP but increased significantly in the post‐test and re‐test (p < 0.05). All CANA‐S re‐test sub‐dimension mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). The mean scores of the experimental group in the DSRSCAN physical symptoms of abuse on the child, characteristics of parents prone to abuse and neglect, characteristics of children at risk of abuse and neglect and familial characteristics in child abuse and neglect sub‐dimensions were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). CANAP effectively increases nursing students' CAN knowledge and awareness levels. Objective The long-term effects of the unilateral muscle-sparing pedicled transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAMmsp) flap procedure on trunk muscle performances and core stability were investigated in women with breast cancer. Methods Forty women (mean age = 42.6 years) who had received breast reconstruction with the unilateral TRAMmsp flap procedure no less than 6 months earlier (mean = 10.3 [standard deviation, SD = 4.9] months) (TRAM group) participated, and 30 women who were healthy and matched for age (mean age = 41.2 years) served as controls (control group). Their abdominal and back muscle strength was assessed using the curl-up and prone extension tests, respectively, and their static abdominal muscle endurance and back extensor endurance were assessed using the sit-up endurance test in the crook-lying position and the Biering-Sørensen test, respectively. Core stability strength was assessed using a 4-level limb-lowering test (abdominal muscle test), and core stability endurance was assessed while lying supine with both flexed legs 1 inch off the mat while keeping the pelvis in a neutral position with a pressure biofeedback unit. Results Compared with the control group, trunk muscles of the TRAM group were weaker, showing less endurance, as were their core stability strength and endurance. Static trunk muscle endurances and trunk flexion strength were associated with core stability in both groups. Conclusions Women exhibit trunk flexor and extensor weakness along with poor endurance and impaired core stability even after an average of 10 months from receiving the TRAMmsp flap procedure. Immobilization after surgery, with possible systemic inflammatory effects from surgery and chemotherapy, might have further contributed to the generalized weakness subsequent to the partial harvesting of the rectus abdominis. Impact Women after breast reconstruction with the TRAMmsp flap procedure show long-lasting deficits of strength and endurance in abdominal muscles, back extensors, and core stability. Proactive measures including early detection and evaluation of impairments as well as timely intervention targeting these clients are important to minimize the dysfunction and support their return to community participation. Objectives: The aim of this cross‐sectional study was to explore the structural validity and internal consistency reliability of General Anxiety Disorder‐7, Patient Health Questionnaire‐8, 15 and Jaw Functional Limitation Scale‐20 in patients with chronic pain of temporomandibular disorders. Materials and Methods: Validity and reliability were assessed in 129 patients diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders. Structural validity was explored using factor analysis, and internal consistency by calculating Cronbach α. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a suitable 2‐factor model for Patient Health Questionnaire‐8, with Cronbach α of 0.89, and 0.86. One and 2‐factor models were suitable for General Anxiety Disorder‐7, with overall Cronbach α of 0.93 for the 1‐factor model, and 0.91 and 0.84 for both factors in a 2‐factor model. A 4‐factor solution was appropriate for Patient Health Questionnaire‐15, with Cronbach α of 0.72, 0.57, 0.71 and 0.73 for each factor separately. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to explore the factor structure of Jaw Functional Limitation Scale 20, and a 3‐factor solution was appropriate. Conclusions: This study provides positive evidence of structural validity and internal consistency of these questionnaires in patients with pain of temporomandibular disorders. Background: The objective of this study was to compare the levels of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), salivary, and serum matrix metalloproteinase‐9, interleukin (IL)‐17, IL‐36γ, and IL‐38 in individuals with healthy periodontium, gingivitis, and periodontitis and to evaluate their correlations with clinical periodontal parameters. Materials and Methods: Ninety systemically healthy and nonsmoking volunteers divided into a healthy (H) group (n = 30), a gingivitis (G) group (n = 30), and a periodontitis (P) group (n = 30) were included in this study. Clinical periodontal parameters of volunteers were recorded, and GCF, unstimulated saliva, and serum samples were collected. Data analysis was done with enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays. The Kruskal–Wallis test and Bonferroni correction were used for multiple comparisons and post hoc statistical analyses. Results: The group H had significantly lower clinical parameters than the group P (p < 0.001). GCF and salivary IL‐36γ and IL‐38 levels were significantly higher in the group P than in the H and G groups (p < 0.05). Positive correlations between biochemical findings and clinical periodontal parameters were observed. Conclusions: IL‐36γ and IL‐38 levels in GCF, saliva, and serum correlate with clinical periodontal parameters and may play a role in determining the activity of periodontitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: In our center, an unusual rate of patients had abnormalities of hemostasis in immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. Our objectives were to identify the cause of these sudden hemostasis abnormalities and to evaluate the performances of point of care coagulation testing. Methods: In this prospective and descriptive study, we included 33 consecutive patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery for 1 month. Heparin-induced anticoagulation and calculation of the protamine dose were tested by the Hemostasis Management System Plus device (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA). Fifteen minutes after the end of the protamine infusion, activated clotting time (ACT), activated partial thromboplastin time and anti Xa activity were measured. In case of unusual clinical bleeding, a Quantra analysis (Stago, HemoSonics LLC, Charlottesville, VA) was added. Results: Residual antiXa activity >0.2 IU/mL after neutralization was present in 44% of patients. Our investigation concluded incomplete heparin reversal. There was no association between cellular reinfusate and the presence of heparin. The unusual rate of hemostasis abnormalities was explained by a less efficient protamine reversal of heparin. ACT and Clot Time Ratio (CTR, Quantra system) correlated with AntiXa with Spearman's coefficients of 0.85 (p <.0001) and 0.95 (p =.0012), respectively. About ACT, a threshold of 150 seconds had a sensitivity of 85% [58–97] and a specificity of 85% [58–97%] for detection of AntiXa>0.2. For CTR, a threshold of 1.4 had a sensitivity of 67% [30–94] and a specificity of 100% [18–100]. Background: Augmented renal clearance (ARC) holds a risk of subtherapeutic drug concentrations. Knowledge of patient-, disease-, and therapy-related factors associated with ARC would allow predicting which patients would benefit from intensified dosing regimens. This study aimed to identify ARC predictors and to describe ARC time-course in critically ill children, using iohexol plasma clearance (CLiohexol) to measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of data from the "IOHEXOL" study which validated GFR estimating formulas (eGFR) against CLiohexol. Critically ill children with normal serum creatinine were included, and CLiohexol was performed as soon as possible after pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission (CLiohexol1) and repeated (CLiohexol2) after 48–72 h whenever possible. ARC was defined as CLiohexol exceeding normal GFR for age plus two standard deviations. Results: Eighty-five patients were included; 57% were postoperative patients. Median CLiohexol1 was 122 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 75–152). Forty patients (47%) expressed ARC on CLiohexol1. Major surgery other than cardiac surgery and eGFR were found as independent predictors of ARC. An eGFR cut-off value of 99 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 140 mL/min/1.73 m2 was suggested to identify ARC in children under and above 2 years, respectively. ARC showed a tendency to persist on CLiohexol2. Conclusions: Our findings raise PICU clinician awareness about increased risk for ARC after major surgery and in patients with eGFR above age-specific thresholds. This knowledge enables identification of patients with an ARC risk profile who would potentially benefit from a dose increase at initiation of treatment to avoid underexposure. To evaluate the efficacy of environment-based intervention on participation outcomes and parent efficacy in autistic children. Twenty-one autistic children 6–10 years old and their parents were randomized to environment-based intervention (n = 11) or usual care (n = 10). The environment-based intervention targets individualized participation goals in leisure and community activities through changing environment and activity demands. The study outcomes were Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Goal attainment scaling (GAS), and Parent Empowerment and Efficacy Measure (PEEM). Assessments included baseline, 12 weeks (post-test), and 24 weeks (follow-up). Mixed ANOVAs were used to examine within-group and between-group effects in outcome variables. The COPM performance and satisfaction scores and GAS T-scores increased after environment-based intervention from baseline to 12 weeks and 24 weeks (p < 0.001) but did not significantly differ from usual care. The medium to large effect sizes of COPM performance and GAS T-scores favored the environment-based intervention. For the PEEM scores, no significant differences were found. Environment-based intervention may support school-age autistic children to participate in self-chosen activities over time. The intervention effects on participation goals and parent efficacy, however, were inconclusive and need further research. Environmental barriers are important attributes to participation restriction in autistic children. Interventions focusing on modifying the task and environment is viable in supporting the participation of autistic children. The environment-based intervention appears to improve the participation goals in leisure and community-based activities over time. The environment-focused strategies may include providing social support, enabling access to a sensory-friendly environment, finding inclusive programs, adapting task demands, and managing routines. Background: Even though arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is recognized as a standard treatment option, the risk of postoperative retear is a major concern. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. Methods: A total of 64 patients with rotator cuff tears diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled prospectively from November 2020 to December 2021. Both groups had repairs using the suture bridge technique. For the atelocollagen group, before securing the lateral anchors, we inserted porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen between the footprint and the tendon. On postoperative day 2, the patients underwent MRI to confirm containment of the patch-type atelocollagen. At 6 months and 1 year postoperatively, the signal intensity of the repaired tendon was assessed using MRI. Patients were evaluated using the Constant score as the primary outcome, along with the visual analog scale for pain; range of motion; American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score; University of California, Los Angeles, score; and Korean Shoulder Score preoperatively and at 2, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Results: No significant changes in the Constant score as primary outcome, pain or other functional scores, and range of motion were observed between the groups at 1 year postoperatively. The patch-type atelocollagen was confirmed to be contained by the time-zero MRI scan taken 2 days postoperatively. Among the 55 patients included in final analysis, 12 retear cases were recorded (21.8% retear rate). A significantly lower retear rate was found in the atelocollagen group, as 3 cases were observed in this group (10.3%) and 9 cases were observed in the conventional repair group (34.6%) (P =.048). Conclusion: The Constant score was not different between the groups. The retear rate after rotator cuff repair was significantly lower in the group that received porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen compared with in the conventional group. Objectives: To examine the effects of acupuncture and therapeutic exercise alone and in combination on temporomandibular joint symptoms in tension-type headache and to evaluate the potential interaction of existing temporomandibular dysfunction on the success of headache treatment. Design: Pre-planned secondary analysis of a randomized controlled, non-blinded trial. Setting: Outpatient clinic of a German university hospital. Subjects: Ninety-six Participants with frequent episodic or chronic tension-type headache were randomized to one of four treatment groups. Interventions: Six weeks of acupuncture or therapeutic exercise either as monotherapies or in combination, or usual care. Follow-up at 3 and 6 months. Main measures: Subjective temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms were measured using the Functional Questionnaire Masticatory Organ, and the influence of this sum score and objective initial dental examination on the efficacy of headache treatment interventions was analyzed. Results: Temporomandibular dysfunction score improved in all intervention groups at 3-month follow-up (usual care: 0.05 [SD 1.435]; acupuncture: −5 [SD 1.436]; therapeutic exercise: −4 [SD 1.798]; combination: −3 [SD 1.504]; P = 0.03). After 6 months, only acupuncture (−6 [SD 1.736]) showed a significant improvement compared to the usual care group (P < 0.01). Subjective temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms had no overall influence on headache treatment. Conclusions: Only acupuncture had long-lasting positive effects on the symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction. Objective: This study aimed to identify peripheral and salivary gland (SG) biomarkers of response/resistance to B cell depletion based on the novel concise Composite of Relevant Endpoints for Sjögren Syndrome (cCRESS) and candidate Sjögren Tool for Assessing Response (STAR) composite endpoints. Methods: Longitudinal analysis of peripheral blood and SG biopsies was performed pre‐ and post‐treatment from the Trial of Anti–B Cell Therapy in Patients With Primary Sjögren Syndrome (TRACTISS) combining flow cytometry immunophenotyping, serum cytokines, and SG bulk RNA sequencing. Results: Rituximab treatment prevented the worsening of SG inflammation observed in the placebo arm, by inhibiting the accumulation of class‐switched memory B cells within the SG. Furthermore, rituximab significantly down‐regulated genes involved in immune‐cell recruitment, lymphoid organization alongside antigen presentation, and T cell co‐stimulatory pathways. In the peripheral compartment, rituximab down‐regulated immunoglobulins and auto‐antibodies together with pro‐inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Interestingly, patients classified as responders according to STAR displayed significantly higher baseline levels of C‐X‐C motif chemokine ligand‐13 (CXCL13), interleukin (IL)‐22, IL‐17A, IL‐17F, and tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), whereas a longitudinal analysis of serum T cell–related cytokines showed a selective reduction in both STAR and cCRESS responder patients. Conversely, cCRESS response was better associated with biomarkers of SG immunopathology, with cCRESS‐responders showing a significant decrease in SG B cell infiltration and reduced expression of transcriptional gene modules related to T cell costimulation, complement activation, and Fcγ‐receptor engagement. Finally, cCRESS and STAR response were associated with a significant improvement in SG exocrine function linked to transcriptional evidence of SG epithelial and metabolic restoration. Conclusion: Rituximab modulates both peripheral and SG inflammation, preventing the deterioration of exocrine function with functional and metabolic restoration of the glandular epithelium. Response assessed by newly developed cCRESS and STAR criteria was associated with differential modulation of peripheral and SG biomarkers, emerging as novel tools for patient stratification. Physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians often care for disabled patients, who comprise America's largest marginalized population. Despitemedical students' and physicians' discomfort with caring for disabled patients and the pervasiveness of ableism in health care, medical education lacks disability-focused education. Kern's approach to curriculum development and disability community input were used to design a three-part, elective curriculum for first-year medical students. Part one introduced disability models and language. Part two described how to perform a comprehensive history and physical examination for a disabled patient using ADEPT-CARE. Part three provided an overview of disability history and the disability rights movement. The curriculum's goal was to improve students' attitudes regarding disability health and self-perceived knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with disabilities. The curriculum was evaluated through presurvey and postsurvey. Students favorably reviewed the curriculum. One hundred percent of students (n = 21) agreed or strongly agreed that the curriculum improved their knowledge of disability health, increased their perceived confidence in caring for patients with disabilities, and enhanced their medical education. There were no statistically significant differences in students' attitudes toward patients with disabilities after curriculum completion. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the acute responses, in the in-hospital setting, of intensive elastic resistance training on physical function, pain, psychosocial variables, and inflammatory markers in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Design: In a randomized controlled trial, 40 patients with total knee arthroplasty (=55 yrs) were assigned to either (1) the intervention group (elastic resistance strengthening) or (2) a control group (conventional protocol). Patients performed three sessions in the hospital at 24, 48, and 72 hrs after total knee arthroplasty. Outcome measures included: self-administered physical function, pain intensity, kinesiophobia, catastrophizing, self-efficacy, range of motion, perceived change, test timed up and go, knee joint effusion, isometric strength, pressure pain thresholds, and inflammatory markers (levels of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein). Results: The mixed analysis of variance model showed a significant group*time interaction in favor of the intervention group with a large effect size for kinesiophobia (ηp2 = 0.308, P < 0.001), catastrophizing (ηp2 = 0.242, P < 0.001), and passive range of motion flexion (ηp2 = 0.167, P < 0.001) and a moderate effect size for physical function (ηp2 = 0.103, P = 0.004), pain intensity (ηp2 = 0.139, P < 0.001), timed up and go (ηp2 = 0.132, P = 0.001), self-efficacy (ηp2 = 0.074, P = 0.016), active range of motion flexion (ηp2 = 0.121, P = 0.002), levels of procalcitonin (ηp2 = 0.099, P = 0.005), and C-reactive protein (ηp2 = 0.106, P = 0.004). Conclusions: Three sessions of intensive elastic resistance training improve physical function, perceived pain, psychosocial variables, and inflammatory markers during the hospitalization period after total knee arthroplasty. Background: This study aims to compare clinical outcomes and financial cost of intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) versus retromuscular (RM) repairs in robotic incisional hernia repairs (rIHR). Methods: Patients who underwent either IPOM or RM elective rIHR from 2012 to 2022 were included. Demographics, operative details, postoperative outcomes, and hospital costs were directly compared. Results: Sixty-nine IPOM and 55 RM were included. Age and body mass index (BMI) did not differ between both groups (IPOM vs RM: 59.3 ± 11.2 years vs. 57.5 ± 14 years, p = 0.423; BMI 34.1 ± 6.3 vs. BMI 33.2 ± 6.9, p = 0.435, respectively). Comorbidities and hernia characteristics were comparable. Extensive lysis of adhesions (> 30 min) was required more often in IPOM (18 vs. 6 in RM, p = 0.034). Defect closure was achieved in 100% of RM vs. 81.2% in IPOM (p < 0.001). Median (interquartile range) postoperative pain score was higher in RM than in IPOM [5(3–7) vs. 4(3–5), respectively, p = 0.006]. Median length of stay (0 day) and same-day discharge rate did not differ between groups (p = 0.598, p = 0.669, respectively). Six (8.7%) patients in the IPOM group versus one (1.8%) patient in the RM group were readmitted to hospital within 30 days postoperatively (p = 0.099). Perioperative complications were higher in IPOM (p = 0.011; 34.8% vs. 14.5% in RM) with higher Comprehensive Complication Index® morbidity scores [0(0–12.2) vs 0(0–0) in RM, p = 0.008)], Clavien–Dindo grade-II complications (8 vs 0 in RM, p = 0.009), and surgical site events (17 vs. 5 in RM, p = 0.024). Within a follow-up period of 57(± 28) months, recurrence rates were similar between both groups. Hospital costs did not differ between groups [IPOM: $9978 (7031–12,926) vs. RM: $8961(6701–11,222), p = 0.300]. Although postoperative complication costs were higher in IPOM ($2436 vs RM: $161, p = 0.020), total costs were comparable [IPOM: $12,415(8700–16,130) vs. RM: $9123(6789–11,457), p = 0.080]. Conclusion: Despite retromuscular repairs having lower postoperative complications than intraperitoneal onlay mesh repairs, both techniques offered encouraging results in robotic incisional hernia repair at a comparable total cost. Introduction: There is growing evidence that the use of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) in colorectal cancer resections is associated with improved short-term outcomes when compared to laparoscopic surgery (LS) or open surgery (OS), possibly through a reduced systemic inflammatory response (SIR). Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) is a sensitive SIR biomarker and its utility in the early identification of post-operative complications has been validated in a variety of surgical procedures. There remains a paucity of studies characterising post-operative SIR in RAS. Methods: Retrospective study of a prospectively collected database of consecutive patients undergoing OS, LS and RAS for left-sided and rectal cancer in a single high-volume unit. Patient and disease characteristics, post-operative CRP levels, and clinical outcomes were reviewed, and their relationships explored within binary logistic regression and propensity scores matched models. Results: A total of 1031 patients were included (483 OS, 376 LS, and 172 RAS). RAS and LS were associated with lower CRP levels across the first 4 post-operative days (p < 0.001) as well as reduced complications and length of stay compared to OS in unadjusted analyses. In binary logistic regression models, RAS was independently associated with lower CRP levels at Day 3 post-operatively (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.21–0.59, p < 0.001) and a reduction in the rate of all complications (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.26–0.56, p < 0.001) and major complications (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.26–0.95, p = 0.036). Within a propensity scores matched model comparing LS versus RAS specifically, RAS was associated with lower post-operative CRP levels in the first two post-operative days, a lower proportion of patients with a CRP ≥ 150 mg/L at Day 3 (20.9% versus 30.5%, p = 0.036) and a lower rate of all complications (34.7% versus 46.7%, p = 0.033). Background: Revisional bariatric surgery after an index adjustable gastric band (AGB) may be indicated to remedy weight relapse or band-related complications. We examined outcomes five years following revision from AGB to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (AGB-LSG) or to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (AGB-RYGB). Methods: We conducted a retrospective review to identify patients (men and women, age 18–80) who underwent one revisional bariatric procedure with AGB as the index procedure at two medical centers in our healthcare system between January 2012 and February 2017. We only included patients with a pre-revision BMI > 30 kg/m2 for whom 5-year follow-up data were available. We compared 5-year weight loss and remission of comorbidities in patients undergoing AGB-LSG and AGB-RYGB conversion. Results: A total of 114 patients met inclusion criteria (65 AGB-LSG, 49 AGB-RYGB). At 5-year post-revision, percent total weight loss (3.4% vs 19.9%; p < 0.001), percent excess weight loss (7.0% vs 50.8%; p < 0.001) and decrease in BMI (1.5 vs 8.8; p < 0.001) was greater in AGB-RYGB vs. AGB-LSG. No significant difference in remission or development of new comorbidities was observed. Conclusion: Conversion of AGB to RYGB is associated with superior intermediate-term weight loss compared to conversion of AGB to LSG. Background: Post‐operative diarrhoea is a common adverse event after pancreatic surgery. While the risk factors for this condition have been identified, the increasing trend of administering chemotherapy before surgery might change these factors. This study aimed to identify the risk factors of post‐operative diarrhoea in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: Patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and pancreatectomy because of PDAC between 2021 and 2023 were included. The preoperative characteristics of, operative details of and post‐operative outcomes in patients with and without post‐operative diarrhoea were collected and compared. The independent risk factors of post‐operative diarrhoea were identified using logistic regression analysis. STROBE checklist was used. Results: Post‐operative diarrhoea occurred in 65 out of 145 (44.8%) patients during hospitalization. Elevated white blood cell count, advanced tumour stage, and late abdominal drain removal were independent risk factors for post‐operative diarrhoea (p <.001, p =.006 and p =.009, respectively). Conclusions: Some perioperative factors influence post‐operative diarrhoea in patients who undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Objective We investigated the incidence of and risk factors for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in patients with rheumatologic disease. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who were diagnosed with rheumatologic diseases at a tertiary care hospital between May 2009 and July 2022 and identified the patients who were subsequently diagnosed with MDS. Each patient with MDS was matched with five age- and sex-matched controls chosen from the cohort of patients with each specific rheumatologic disease. Results During a total follow-up of 55 841 person-years (PY), MDS occurred in 64 patients, yielding an incidence rate of 1.15/1000 PY {median age 57.0 years [interquartile range (IQR) 41.0–69.0], median duration to MDS diagnosis 6.5 years (IQR 3.0–9.0)]. In an age-matched analysis, SLE was a significant risk factor for MDS [adjusted hazard ratio 2.61 (CI 1.19, 36.06), P  = 0.01]. Refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia was the most common phenotype of MDS (35.9%), and more than half of the patients had karyotypes with a favourable prognosis (54.7%). Compared with matched controls, RA, SLE and AS patients with MDS had lower levels of haemoglobin at the time of diagnosis of rheumatologic disease. Furthermore, the MDS patients with SLE and Behçet's disease had higher levels of glucocorticoid use in terms of frequency of use and mean dose than control patients. Conclusion SLE is a significant risk factor for MDS among patients with rheumatologic diseases. Malnutrition is prevalent among surgical candidates and associated with adverse outcomes. Despite being potentially modifiable, malnutrition risk screening is not a standard preoperative practice. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to understand healthcare professionals' (HCPs) opinions and barriers regarding screening and treatment of malnutrition. HCPs working with adult surgical patients in Canada were invited to complete an online survey. Barriers to preoperative malnutrition screening were assessed using the Capability Opportunity Motivation-Behaviour model. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed using summative content analysis. Of the 225 HCPs surveyed (n = 111 dietitians, n = 72 physicians, n = 42 allied HCPs), 96%–100% agreed that preoperative malnutrition is a modifiable risk factor associated with worse surgical outcomes and is a treatment priority. Yet, 65% (n = 142/220; dietitians: 88% vs. physicians: 40%) reported screening for malnutrition, which mostly occured in the postoperative period (n = 117) by dietitians (n = 94). Just 42% (48/113) of non-dietitian respondents referred positively screened patients to a dietitian for further assessment and treatment. The most prevalent barriers for malnutrition screening were related to opportunity, including availability of resources (57%, n = 121/212), time (40%, n = 84/212) and support from others (38%, n = 80/212). In conclusion, there is a gap between opinion and practice among surgical HCPs pertaining to malnutrition. Introudction: There is increased risk of skin cancer in patients with gloermular disease or those with renal transplant. Objectives: To compare the risk of skin cancer between kidney recipients (KTRs) and patients with glomerular disease (GD). Design: The cohort comprised patients with KTRs (n = 61) and GD (n = 51) in Central and Central West Queensland, Australia. A quantitative cohort study was undertaken to study the risk of skin cancer in rural communities between two subgroups of patients with kidney diseases in relationship to immunosuppression. Statistical analyses of the differences in incidence of skin cancers between the two groups were done by chi‐square test, Fisher's exact test, independent t‐test and McNemar's test. Findings: KTRs with non‐melanoma skin carcinoma (NMSC) increased significantly after treatment with immunosuppressants (pre‐transplantation, n = 11 [18.0%], post‐transplantation, n = 28 [45.9%]; p < 0.001). There were no differences in number of patients with NMSC observed in the GD group (pre‐diagnosis, n = 6 [11.8%], post‐diagnosis, n = 7 [13.7%]; p = 1.000). Compared to the risks at 1 year post‐immunosuppressants, the incidence of NMSC of KTRs increased significantly at 3 years (20.3% vs. 35.4%, p < 0.001) and 5 years (20.3% vs. 62.2%, p < 0.001) post‐immunosuppressants, whereas the increased incidence of NMSC was observed only at 5 years (2.1% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.012) in the GD cohort. The mean cumulative number of NMSC in KTRs increased significantly at 3 years (p = 0.011), and 5 years (p = 0.001) post‐immunosuppressants, compared to the risks at 1 year post‐immunosuppressants, however, no differences were noted in the GD cohort. Discussion: Immunosuppressants increased the risk of NMSC in KTRs. The increased risk is likely dependent on the intensity and duration of immunosuppressants. Introduction: Sepsis, a syndrome of organ dysfunction caused by an unregulated host response to infection. This study aimed to develop a novel sepsis diagnostic model of hematological parameters and evaluate its effectiveness in the early identification and prognosis of sepsis in emergency departments. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in Emergency Department. Cell population data parameters related to monocytes and neutrophils were obtained using the Mindary BC‐6800 plus hematology analyzer. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the performance of the parameters and establish a diagnostic and prognostic model of sepsis, which was then verified with a validation cohort. Results: Mon_XW exhibited the best diagnostic performance (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.848, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.810–0.885, p < 0.001), followed by Neu_Y and Neu_YW (AUC = 0.777 95% CI: 0.730–0.824, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified Mon_XW and Neu_Y as independent predictors, which were used to establish a diagnostic model named hematological parameter for sepsis (HPS). HPS demonstrated the best diagnostic performance with an AUC of 0.862 (95% CI: 0.826–0.898, p < 0.001), sensitivity of 70.0%, and specificity of 87.1%, compared to C‐reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT). The validation cohort also found that the positive predictive value of HPS was 70.4% and the negative predictive value was 92.2%. Conclusion: The developed HPS model showed promising diagnostic efficacy for sepsis in the emergency department, which outperformed CRP and PCT in terms of sensitivity and specificity. Objectives: More than half of women do not achieve appropriate gestational weight gain. Maternal body image may be an important factor associated with gestational weight gain. However, this association has not been thoroughly evaluated. We aimed to elucidate whether body image parameters before and during pregnancy are associated with gestational weight gain in Japanese women. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted at a hospital in Osaka, Japan from March 2020 to March 2021. We recruited women with singleton pregnancies in their second and third trimesters. Body image was assessed using the Pregnancy and Weight Gain Attitude Scale and additional questions. Gestational weight gain was classified as insufficient, appropriate, or excessive based on recommended ranges in Japan. One-way analysis of variance, chi-square tests, and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with insufficient or excessive weight gain. Results: Of 266 enrolled women, 47 had insufficient weight gain and 100 had excessive weight gain during pregnancy. Risk factors for excessive gestational weight gain included a history of dietary restriction before pregnancy, negative attitudes toward gestational weight gain, and perception of body shape as fat and body shape dissatisfaction during pregnancy. Perception of body shape as thin during pregnancy was identified as a risk factor for insufficient gestational weight gain. Conclusions: Body image before and during pregnancy may be an important factor in preventing insufficient or excessive gestational weight gain in Japanese women. Healthcare professionals should consider body image when providing health guidance on weight management to pregnant women. Significance: What is Already Known? Body image is a possible factor in gestational weight gain. Compared to women in other countries, Japanese women of reproductive age tend to have a negative body image. What this Study adds? A history of dietary restriction before pregnancy and negative body image during pregnancy were associated with excessive gestational weight gain among Japanese women. Perception of body shape during pregnancy as thin was associated with insufficient gestational weight gain. Thus, even in a Japanese population, characterized by a majority of women with pre-pregnancy underweight or normal body mass index status, associations between negative body image and gestational weight gain were similar to those in other countries. Objectives: Two headphone systems using different sound systems were compared to investigate the effects of a sound intervention on cardiovascular parameters, indicators of stress, and subjective feelings. Methods: One hundred volunteers who work in the health care sector reporting elevated workplace-related stress were enrolled and randomized to a 12-min sound intervention (classical music) with either conventional headphones ("MEZE 99 Classic") or with the same—but internally modified—headphone (called "Lautsaenger"). Cardiovascular parameters were measured with the VascAssist2.0, both before and after sound interventions. In addition, participants were asked to complete questionnaires on burnout risk and emotions/stress. Results: The study population consisted mainly of female participants (n = 83), with the majority being students (42%). Median age was 32.5 years (range 21–71). In terms of cardiovascular parameters, a significant reduction in aortic pulse wave velocity, as measure of arterial stiffness, and heart rate was observed within both treatment arms. Both systolic blood pressure and arterial flow resistance were reduced by sound intervention, while these effects were only documented with Lautsaenger. Treatment groups were comparable in terms of subjective feedback by participants: a significant increase in emotional wellbeing was achieved with both headphone systems. Conclusions: A single short-term sound intervention seems to be able to achieve objective cardiovascular improvements in healthy volunteers reporting subjective symptoms of workplace-related stress, using two different headphone systems. Background: Glycopyrrolate-neostigmine (G/N) for reversing neuromuscular blockade (NMB) causes fewer changes in heart rate (HR) than atropine-neostigmine (A/N). This advantage may be especially beneficial for elderly patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the cardiovascular effects of G/N and A/N for the reversal of NMB in elderly patients. Methods: Elderly patients aged 65–80 years who were scheduled for elective non-cardiac surgery under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to the glycopyrrolate group (group G) or the atropine group (group A). Following the last administration of muscle relaxants for more than 30 min, group G received 4 ug/kg glycopyrrolate and 20 ug/kg neostigmine, while group A received 10 ug/kg atropine and 20 ug/kg neostigmine. HR, mean arterial pressure (MAP), and ST segment in lead II (ST-II) were measured 1 min before administration and 1–15 min after administration. Results: HR was significantly lower in group G compared to group A at 2–8 min after administration (P < 0.05). MAP was significantly lower in group G compared to group A at 1–4 min after administration (P < 0.05). ST-II was significantly depressed in group A compared to group G at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, and 15 min after administration (P < 0.05). Aim: We aimed to investigate the level of undergraduate nursing students' professional identity (PI) during the COVID‐19 pandemic and its potential influences. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included 742 undergraduate nursing students from Chengdu Medical College. Basic demographics, personal characteristics and PI score were collected. Chi‐squared test, one‐way analysis of variance, and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: In the classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021, the PI score was 96.85 ± 18.26, 105.37 ± 17.46, 106.67 ± 22.08 (P <.001). PI score was the independent predictive factor for both "want to be a nurse" and "willingness to serve during COVID‐19 or other pandemics". Conclusions: PI contributes greatly to nursing students' willingness to be a nurse and overcome pandemics. Purpose: Cognitive impairment is one of the most debilitating nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson disease (PD), and its presentation is heterogeneous. One proposed model to explain cognitive variability in PD is the dual-syndrome hypothesis. This hypothesis delineates two cognitive profiles, a “fronto-striatal” profile and a “posterior cortical” profile according to symptom presentation, associated motor phenotype, and risk for dementia. The current study examined the dual-syndrome hypothesis in individuals with idiopathic PD to evaluate the existence of these profiles, determine the association with the motor phenotype (tremor dominant vs. postural instability/gait disorder), and assess the relative risk for dementia. Method: A retrospective examination was conducted using data from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative database at baseline (within 2 years of diagnosis) and 5 years after baseline. Descriptive categorizations, cluster analyses, generalized linear mixed models, and logistic regressions were used to address the research questions. Results: There was emerging evidence of cognitive profiles; however, these were not fully supported by cluster analyses. Baseline cognitive profile was associated with later motor phenotype, and as predicted, dementia risk was greatest in persons with baseline posterior cortical impairments. Conclusion: The current results provide mixed support for the dual-syndrome hypothesis, with some evidence that the posterior cortical cognitive profile is associated with postural instability and gait disorder as well as greater dementia risk. Background: Minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy (MIDP) has established advantages over the open approach. The costs associated with robotic DP (RDP) versus laparoscopic DP (LDP) make the robotic approach controversial. We sought to compare outcomes and cost of LDP and RDP using propensity matching analysis at our institution. Methods: Patients undergoing LDP or RDP between 2000 and 2021 were retrospectively identified. Patients were optimally matched using age, gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists status, body mass index, and tumor size. Between-group differences were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for continuous data, and the McNemar's test for categorical data. Outcomes included operative duration, conversion to open surgery, postoperative length of stay, pancreatic fistula rate, pseudocyst requiring intervention, and costs. Results: 298 patients underwent MIDP, 180 (60%) were laparoscopic and 118 (40%) were robotic. All RDPs were matched 1:1 to a laparoscopic case with absolute standardized mean differences for all matching covariates below 0.10, except for tumor type (0.16). RDP had longer operative times (268 vs 178 min, p < 0.01), shorter length of stay (2 vs 4 days, p < 0.01), fewer biochemical pancreatic leaks (11.9% vs 34.7%, p < 0.01), and fewer interventional radiological drainage (0% vs 5.9%, p = 0.01). The number of pancreatic fistulas (11.9% vs 5.1%, p = 0.12), collections requiring antibiotics or intervention (11.9% vs 5.1%, p = 0.12), and conversion rates (3.4% vs 5.1%, p = 0.72) were comparable between the two groups. The total direct index admission costs for RDP were 1.01 times higher than for LDP for FY16-19 (p = 0.372), and 1.33 times higher for FY20-22 (p = 0.031). Conclusions: Although RDP required longer operative times than LDP, postoperative stays were shorter. Background and study aims: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) carry a potential risk of malignancy, and the treatment of GIST varies for different risk levels. However, there is no systematic preoperative assessment protocol to predict the malignant potential of GIST. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable and clinically applicable preoperative nomogram prediction model to predict the malignant potential of gastric GIST. Patients and methods: Patients with a pathological diagnosis of gastric GIST from January 2015 to December 2021 were screened retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for gastric GIST with high malignancy potential. Based on these independent risk factors, a nomogram model predicting the malignant potential of gastric GIST was developed and the model was validated in the validation group. Results: A total of 494 gastric GIST patients were included in this study and allocated to a development group (n = 345) and a validation group (n = 149). In the development group, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that tumor size, tumor ulceration, CT growth pattern and monocyte-to- lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were independent risk factors for gastric GIST with high malignancy potential. The AUC of the model were 0.932 (95% CI 0.890–0.974) and 0.922 (95% CI 0.868–0.977) in the development and validation groups, respectively. The best cutoff value for the development group was 0.184, and the sensitivity and specificity at this value were 0.895 and 0.875, respectively. The calibration curves indicated good agreement between predicted and actual observed outcomes, while the DCA indicated that the nomogram model had clinical application. Conclusions: Tumor size, tumor ulceration, CT growth pattern and MLR are independent risk factors for high malignancy potential gastric GIST, and a nomogram model developed based on these factors has a high ability to predict the malignant potential of gastric GIST. Background: Psychological Clearance level (PCL) for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is a critical step for successful postoperative outcomes. This study aims to assess the relationship between the level of psychologic fitness and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing MBS. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients who underwent MBS (laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy [LSG] and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass [LRYGB]) and completed two years follow-up, between 2012 and 2019, in a single medical center. The patients were divided into four groups based on PCL, suggesting level of readiness for surgery: Group A (PCL-0: guarded), group B (PCL-1: Fair/reasonable), group C (PCL-2: Good/appropriate), and group D (PCL-3: Strong/excellent). Primary outcome was the percent of total body weight loss (%TWL), and the absolute change in BMI units. Secondary outcomes were missed postoperative visits and patient compliance. Differences between the groups were analyzed using a generalized linear model (GLM), chi-squared and exact Fisher tests, as appropriate. Results: Of 1411 total patients, 607 (43.20%) had complete data at two years follow-up. 512 (84.34%) were females. LSG was performed in 361 (59.5%). No difference was found in %TWL between the four groups (22.14% vs. 28.0% vs. 26.0% vs. 24.8%, p = 0.118). We found a small difference in the mean (SD) of absolute change in BMI between the groups, and on post-hoc analysis it was found between groups B (PCL-1) and D (PCL-3). Overall, no difference between the groups in number of follow-up visits, or compliance issues. However, patients who attended more follow-up visits had less compliance issues (p < 0.001). PCL is inversely correlated with number of psychologic diagnoses (r = − 0.41, p < 0.001) and medical comorbidities (r = − 0.20, p < 0.001). Conclusion: We found no difference in the percent of TWL in patients who underwent MBS based on PCL at two -years follow-up. Medical comorbidities and psychiatric diagnoses impact the PCL. Background and aims: This retrospective study aimed to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection and laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery in patients with superficial non-ampullary duodenal epithelial tumors. Patients and methods: We investigated consecutive patients with SNADETs > 10 mm in size who underwent ESD (ESD group) or LECS (LECS group) between January 2015 and March 2021. The data was used to analyze the clinical course, management, survival status, and recurrence between the two groups. Results: A total of 113 patients (100 and 13 in the ESD and LECS groups, respectively) were investigated. The rates of en bloc resection and curative resection were 100% vs. 100% and 93.0% vs. 77.0% in the ESD and LECS groups, respectively, with no significant difference. The ESD group had shorter resection and suturing times than the LECS group, but there were no significant difference after propensity score matching. There were also no differences in the rates of postoperative adverse event (7.0% vs. 23.1%; P = 0.161). The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was high in both the ESD and LECS groups (97.6% vs. 100%; P = 0.334). One patient in the ESD group experienced recurrence due to liver metastasis; however, no deaths related to SNADETs were observed. Conclusion: ESD and LECS are both acceptable treatments for SNADETs in terms of a high OS rate and a low long-term recurrence rate, thereby achieving a comparable high rate of curative resection. Background: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are widespread, devastating and complex. About 20% of people who consume alcohol develop problem use, accounting for over 5% of worldwide deaths. While numerous animal models have facilitated understanding of the consequences of excessive drinking, translational models allow for experimental manipulation of factors thought to contribute to AUD liability. Methods: We employ a single-exposure conditioned place preference assay (SE-CPP) to investigate the influence of age, sex and the opioid peptide β-endorphin (bE) on the initial rewarding effects of ethanol, a strong predictor of AUDs. Adolescent (PND28-35) and adult (PND70-90) male and female, control C57BL/6J and bE-deficient mice were tested following a single injection of 1.5 g/kg of ethanol. Following the SE-CPP test, animals were deeply anesthetized, sacrificed, and perfused, and the brains were subsequently sectioned at 40 microns and processed for immunohistochemical localization of c-fos. One-sample, two-tailed t-tests were used to assess drug preference or aversion and the locomotor effects of alcohol. Results: In general, adults were more sensitive to the effects of alcohol than adolescents, and outcomes depended on sex and bE. For example, among females, adolescents were stimulated by the drug, but insensitive to locomotor effects as adults, while among males, adolescents were insensitive and adults sedated. Wild-type adolescents of both sexes failed to evince initial subjective reward from the drug, but bE-deficient adolescents, and all adult subjects, preferred a context once associated with ethanol over one that had been paired with saline. c-fos immunoreactivity in multiple brain regions was attenuated in bE-deficient animals, though influences of both sex and bE grew stronger with age. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the utility of the SE-CPP paradigm for elucidating factors that contribute to the liability for AUDs, and supports the growing body of research that shows that sensitivity to the rewarding effects of alcohol changes during the course of development.
