Australia is a country rich in cultural diversity, with Indigenous Australians having specific cultural values and a variety of spoken languages. In addition, the increasing number of people from migrant and refugee backgrounds requires that health professionals be able to communicate effectively with people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. This is particularly relevant when undertaking a mental health assessment, because members of diverse communities often face the dual vulnerability of marginalization and stigmatization. This paper reports on the development and evaluation of a virtual teaching and learning resource that prepares health students to be culturally competent in mental health assessment. Four online interprofessional learning journeys were developed. Evaluation of the learning resources was conducted across three participating Australian universities. Quantitative evaluation involved pre- and post-testing using an empathy scale, the Mental Health Nursing Clinical Confidence Scale, and the Cultural Competence Questionnaire informed by the theory of planned behaviour. Qualitative data from focus group interviews explored participants' experiences of using the guided learning journey. Participants reported changes from pretest to post-test in their empathy and attitudes towards culturally and linguistically diverse consumers with significant positive changes in cultural competence, empathy, and attitudes. There was strong satisfaction with the learning materials, indicating that participants valued this 'real world' learning experience. Results require cautious interpretation, given recruitment difficulties in the evaluation phase. The shortage of a skilled mental health nursing workforce is persistent and worsening. Research consistently demonstrates the inability of the comprehensive model of nursing education to meet nursing workforce needs in mental health. Introducing specialisation in mental health at undergraduate level has been suggested as a strategy to address this problem. Exploration of barriers to this educational approach is essential. The aim of this research is to examine with Queensland Heads of Schools of Nursing, the perceived barriers to a specialist mental health nursing stream within an undergraduate nursing programme. Qualitative exploratory methods, involving in-depth telephone interviews with Heads of Schools of Nursing in Queensland, Australia. Data were analysed thematically. Participants encountered a number of barriers revealed in five main themes: academic staffing; staff attitudes; funding and resource implications; industry support; entry points and articulation pathways. Barriers to the implementation of mental health nursing specialisation in undergraduate programmes are evident. While these barriers pose real threats, potential solutions are also evident. Most notably is the need for Schools of Nursing to become more co-operative in mounting mental health nursing specialisations in a smaller number of universities, where specialist expertise is identified. Quality mental health services rely on a sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable nursing workforce. To achieve this it is important to identify and implement the educational approach best suited to prepare nurses for practice in this field.

Understanding one's history is a powerful way to build a sense of belonging, identity and connection. Similarly, history learning can be a powerful component in the core curriculum for undergraduate nursing. History learning develops thinking skills transferable to and necessary in nursing practice. Additionally, awareness about the profession's struggles, achievements and enduring concerns is raised and belief that an individual or group can have influence is affirmed. Perseverance, commitment and seeing the big picture gives a nurse's career meaning and purpose. All of these factors can produce a transformed perspective in today's learners, who are often present-focused, isolated and disconnected from the past and the profession. This paper reports an evaluation of a second interactive learning experience held at the University of the Sunshine Coast to celebrate International Nurses Day 2010. This paper reports on a survey of Australian Schools of Nursing that took place over an 8months period between 2007 and 2008. This study was implemented to extend understanding of effective teaching of nursing history, an area not previously researched in Australia. A critical interpretive method enabled us to problematise the issue, to highlight what was said about the importance of history teaching as well as ad hoc practices and barriers. The study found that participants value history of nursing teaching, but the crowded curriculum is erasing history's place and potential. It revealed ideological tensions shaping and constraining history of nursing teaching. In Australia, the way nursing's history is taught varies and teaching content, strategies and resources utilised are not evenly available. Pedagogical innovations are not effectively disseminated. Our recommendations for Australian Schools of Nursing that have more general applicability are: (1) Nursing curriculum needs to be developed from a set of principles and standards that define the attributes of the professional nurse, not in response to interest groups and (2) History of nursing pedagogy should be systematically developed and disseminated through a national virtual centre, linked to international centres, to enhance teachers' understanding of the discipline area and to support their teaching practice., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: Clinical educators in nursing perform a crucial role in facilitating effective learning for students of nursing. They have the potential to act as a catalysing agent for learning--motivating students to make links between theory and practice, moving students safely from the known to the unknown, developing clinical skills and reflective practice. Whilst their role is extremely important, clinical educators in Australia are undervalued and under-supported. They are isolated and fragmented, and lack a unifying professional body and infrastructure to assist them in education, research and practice development. This paper reports on a study to explore what educational solutions could help to resolve the problem., Design: A qualitative design utilising snowball sampling and semi-structured interviews was conducted., Setting: The study took place in Queensland and thus results are limited to the needs identified in this region of Australia., Subjects: Ten participants provided their views about educational innovations., Conclusions: There is strong support for a curriculum focused on clinical education and centred on the concept of a learning community in order to provide community and build capacity in the specialty group so that they become self-reliant and their achievements and contributions are sustainable.

Nurses work in complex health care systems, which today are based not only on medical treatment and cure, but also on enabling individuals and strengthening communities. This paper describes a curriculum approach to teaching nursing in an Australian university which seeks to prepare students for this environment. Underpinned by transformative education principles, and termed Solution Focused Nursing, specific teaching and learning strategies are discussed. A goal is to cultivate critical thinkers and knowledge workers, that is, nurses who are not only able to work skillfully, strategically, and respectfully with clients, but who also demonstrate discernment, optimism, and vision about nursing and health care.

This is the second in a pair of articles exploring critical education, an illuminating philosophy relevant to practice development facilitators, clinical teachers, academics, clinicians and others involved in the rethinking of nursing practice. I argue that critical education and its practice equivalent-transformative teaching and learning, can restore optimism in those who feel that longstanding practice problems have become insoluble. It can provide clear direction to assist new nurses, students and lifelong learners to become strategic about change, aware of the rich and varied history of their profession, critical thinkers and creative solution generators. In this article, I move beyond the forming phase of the teacher-student relationship to the building, or working phase of learning. Two particular ways of encouraging critical thinking are emphasised: reflective practice and dialectical critique. In order to move beyond the purely abstract, I draw on my experiences teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, and clinicians working in education, practice and research.

The value of mentorship to professional development in nursing education has been consistently demonstrated in the literature. The benefits for mental health nursing are particularly noted for attracting nursing students and new graduates into this area of practice. The proliferation of online delivery of mental health nursing programs poses particular issues in providing mentorship to students. Despite changes to the mode of educational delivery, the mentorship literature primarily addresses face-to-face processes. The aim of this paper is to present a review of the literature pertaining to online mentorship. A literature search of the CinAHL, Medline, ProQuest and Google Scholar databases was undertaken to identify relevant literature. Hand searches of reference lists were also conducted. The findings demonstrate the paucity of literature addressing this topic. Evaluation of online mentorship programs are particularly scarce, small scale and usually conducted at one site only. Few descriptions of the content and structure are provided meaning that program development cannot benefit from existing knowledge and expertise. There is an urgent need for online mentorship accompanied by rigorous and systematic evaluation frameworks to maximize the benefits of mentorship to an online environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antipsychotic medication has long been one of the first-line interventions for people with serious mental illness, with outcomes including reductions in symptoms and relapse rates. More recently, however, questions have been raised about the efficacy of antipsychotic medications, especially in light of their side-effect profile. Such questions have implications for the nurses administering antipsychotic medications, particularly in relation to their knowledge of the antipsychotic medication, its efficacy, and side-effect profile. Also important is the education of nursing students about antipsychotic medications, their use, and management. The present study reports findings of research that explored current curriculum content concerning psychopharmacological treatment in Australian undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes. Using a survey design, the research examined the content and modes of delivery of this content to gauge how well students are prepared for administering antipsychotic medication to people with serious mental illness. Findings of the research suggested the need for improvement in preparing nursing students to administer antipsychotic medication, including indications, contraindications, as well as recognition and management of side-effects. In addition to acquiring a solid foundation of clinical knowledge and skills, nursing students making the transition from lay person to health professional must adopt new conceptual understandings and values, while at the same time reflecting on and relinquishing ill-fitting attitudes and biases. This paper presents creative teaching ideas that utilise published narratives and explores the place of these narratives in teaching threshold concepts to nursing students. Appreciating nuance, symbolism and deeper layers of meaning in a well-drawn story can promote emotional engagement and cause learners to care deeply about an issue. Moreover, aesthetic learning, through the use of novels, memoirs and picture books, invites learners to enter into imagined worlds and can stimulate creative and critical thinking. This approach can also be a vehicle for transformative learning and for enhancing students' understanding and internalisation of threshold concepts that are integral to nursing. Guided engagement with the story by an effective educator can help learners to examine taken-for-granted assumptions, differentiate personal from professional values, remember the link between the story and the threshold concept and re-examine their own perspectives; this can result in transformative learning. In this paper, we show how threshold concepts can be introduced and discussed with nursing students via guided engagement with specific literature, so as to prompt meaningful internalised learning. Teaching is a complex art that takes courage to commit to, particularly in the face of stressed students, crowded curricula, tensions in preparation for the graduate role, and ongoing educator shortages. My colleagues and I have been taking on this challenge by imbuing our teaching of nursing with more passion. As Parker Palmer (1998 , p. 144), the renowned educationalist once said: “The growth of any craft depends on shared practice and honest dialogue among the people who do it. We grow by trial and error, to be sure – but our willingness to try, and fail, as individuals are severely limited when we are not supported by a community that encourages such risks”. The vision that I have is for nursing educators to come together in communities of practice to talk about the challenging aspects of nursing and ways these challenges can be reframed and reapproached through education. This work is underpinned by the pedagogy of Transformative Learning (TL). At its heart this pedagogy is interested in problematic practices that keep afflicting a discipline such as nursing, and in pondering and revising the educational solutions. In nursing, our biggest problems are where stigma, inequality and inertia persist to make vulnerable communities experience more illness and hardship than others who are more privileged. TL treats students as critical agents – who have the potential to rethink problems and change practices. In a recently completed qualitative study of nursing leaders' views of requirements for practice, seven aspects of recovery practice were revealed as central for graduates to learn. It is challenging to provide an in-depth understanding of recovery in a nursing curriculum because there are so many competing content areas and, as a result, time is constrained. However, because it is so vital to understand, educators would benefit from developing and sharing teaching strategies that explore recovery deeply, memorably, and engagingly, in order to encourage theory to be put into practice. Recent research into narrative pedagogy suggests that better use of stories, especially those that have strong emotional pull, such as well-made films and memoirs, may offer solutions to creative educators. Stories can have transformative potential, because once heard and heeded, the person can never go back to exactly how they were before. Recovery learned in this way becomes a threshold concept for the mental health curriculum. Aims and Objectives To explore the perspectives of nursing directors in mental health in Queensland, Australia, regarding the skills and attributes of graduates of comprehensive nursing programme to provide an industry perspective and thus augment knowledge from theoretical and professional dimensions. Background There is a worldwide shortage of appropriately qualified nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to work effectively in mental health services. Within Australia, this has been well documented since the introduction of comprehensive nursing education. The underrepresentation of mental health content in undergraduate curricula has been identified as the primary reason for nursing graduates not being adequately prepared for practice in this field. To date, this issue has primarily been addressed from the perspective of university academics, with the voice of industry relatively silent in the published literature. Design Qualitative exploratory. Method In-depth telephone interviews with Director of Nursing (Mental Health) in Queensland, Australia. Results The concerns of participants were expressed in six main themes: (1) foundational knowledge of mental health and disorders, (2) recovery-oriented skills, (3) physical as well as mental health skills, (4) therapeutic strategies, (5) resilience and self-development and (6) advanced knowledge and skills. Conclusions The education of comprehensive nursing education needs to be reviewed as a matter of priority to ensure graduates with the attributes required to provide high-quality care for consumers of mental health services. Relevance to clinical practice A skilled and knowledgeable workforce is an essential component of high-quality mental health services. Contemporary nursing education in Australia needs to respond to the imperatives facing clinical practice (A* that nurses be work-ready, resilient, multi-skilled, good team communicators, compassionate and responsive to the diverse needs of clients and families. Transformative learning principles combined with effective, action-based learning experiences can provide a focused pedagogical basis for cultivating and achieving these graduate outcomes. In this paper, a novel framework is presented that provides a structure to support educators and curriculum development. This conceptual article, drawn from the authors' shared teaching experiences and recent student and clinician evaluation data, set out to reveal and then address some common problems faced by clinical educators and nursing students in the time-constrained, complex, specialized field of clinical learning. We explain and argue the benefits of transformative learning and outline specific strategies for building skills in transformative education, such as interrogating clinical routines and habits, teaching diplomacy skills, and using a process of interruption. Summary: This Australian study explored the extent to which solution focused nursing (SFN), a new philosophy of care underpinning a Bachelor of Nursing Programme, was understood by students and staff. Students and faculty perceptions of teaching and learning were explored using survey and semi-structured interview methods. The results showed that students did not have strong views about whether solutions or problems contribute best to a definition of nursing knowledge, but there were some differences between the year groups. This was hypothesised to be related to the way SFN is or is not being taught. Teachers were generally positive about SFN but perceived that they needed more education on the philosophy to ensure it could be translated into their teaching. A teaching and learning package is recommended to be produced and made available to all teachers within the program. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article examines a curriculum approach to the teaching of Ancient History in the context of contemporary Queensland Secondary School Education. Underpinned by transformative teaching principles, specific teaching and learning strategies are discussed exploring their potential to engage, give a voice to, and enable students to critique the dominant paradigm. This kind of approach not only has potential to reveal history's relevance for contemporary living, it also teaches skills crucial for lifelong leaning. It has transformative potential because it teaches students how to skilfully and persuasively challenge authority to resist practices that ought not be supported and to be conscious of discriminatory practices that exist across time.
