In this work, we design and synthesize a hybrid structure consisting of Sn-incorporated Cu3SbSe4 and a second phase CuSe, that is, (Cu3Sb1 − xSnxSe4)(CuSe)y (x = 0–0.04, y = 0.3–0.08), and explore the role of each phase on the improvement of the thermoelectric (TE) performance. In the Cu3Sb1 − xSnxSe4 phase, the element Sn residing at the Sb site provides p-type holes while at the same time increasing the point defects and crystal structure distortion. The presence of the second phase CuSe, which is in situ formed within the Cu3Sb1 − xSnxSe4 matrix, not only improves the electrical conductivity but also increases the phonon scattering on the phase boundaries. As a result, the hybrid structure allows the improvement in TE performance with the highest ZT value of 0.37 at ∼600 K for the samples at x = 0.02–0.03 and y = 0.11–0.09, which is about 42% higher than that of pristine Cu3SbSe4. Here, we used two elements Cu and Sb as the substitutes for Te in Ga2Te3 and observed a giant enhancement in thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT). This potential substituted Ga2Cu0.05SbxTe2.95-x (x = 0.2) gives the maximum ZT value of 0.5 at 700 K, more than 3 times as high as that of intrinsic Ga2Te3. The enhancement in ZT is attributed to the significantly reduced thermal conductivity caused mainly by the presence of Cu at Ga vacancy planes, and remarkably improved electrical conductivity by the occupation of Sb at Te sites, which increases the carrier concentration and conserves the high mobility. Abstract: A novel ternary Ag-In-Se semiconductor was prepared using spark plasma sintering technique, and its crystal structure and thermoelectric properties were evaluated. XRD analysis and bandgap measurement indicated that this ternary compound crystallizes in a single phase AgIn5Se8 with its bandgap of 1.11 eV, smaller than that of In2Se3, it therefore is of higher electrical conductivity than In2Se3. The highest power factor and thermoelectric figure of merit ZT, thermal conductivity at 863 K are 2.74x10-4 W.K-2 .m-1, 0.61 and 0.39 W.K-2 .m-1, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cu3SnS4 chalcogenide as a low‐cost, earth abundant thermoelectric material has recently attracted much attention. However, its Seebeck coefficient is rather low due to its metallic‐like behavior; therefore, substantial work is required to enhance its thermoelectric (TE) properties. In this work, an alternative method is proposed, that is, a regulation of the crystal structure through alloying with Cu3SbSe3. This regulation is realized by the incorporation of Sb and Se in the Cu3SnS4 host frame with an addition of Cu3SbSe3, thus altering the bond lengths (CuS and SnS) and bond angles (SCuS and SSnS), and leading to widening of the bandgap and the convergence of top valence bands. At the same time, the lattice thermal conductivity reduces by ≈50% at high temperatures, mainly triggered by the crystal structure distortion and introduced point defects. The approach of crystal structure regulation may help design the properties of other ternary CuSn(Sb)S(Se) compounds for TE applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we present the manipulation of the crystal structure defects: an alternative route to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity (κL) on an atomic scale and improve the thermoelectric performance of CuGaTe2. This semiconductor with defects, represented by anion position displacement (u) and tetragonal deformation (η), generally gives low κL values when u and η distinctly deviate from 0.25 and 1 in the ideal zinc-blende structure, respectively. However, this semiconductor will show high Seebeck coefficients and low electrical conductivities when u and η are close to 0.25 and 1, respectively, due to the electrical inactivity caused by an attractive interaction between donor-acceptor defect pairs (GaCu2+ + 2VCu-). In Ga 2 Te 3 -rich quasibinary Cd (3 − 3 m ) Ga 2 m Te 3 ( m = 0.75–0.98) system there are two physical phenomena: structural vacancy ( V ) and its related cationic interdiffusion. The former is able to simultaneously govern the carrier, phonon transportations and the bandgap, while the latter merely facilitates the transportation of carrier to some extent. Accordingly, there are multiple transportation behaviors coexisting at a certain m value in this system. These behaviors, which have not only enhanced the carrier concentration ( n ), but have also increased the entropy of the lattice as m value increases, yield the highest thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT ) of 0.55 at 682 K for m = 0.98. The ZT value is increased to ~1.05 at 723 K owing to the significant enhancement of the power factor and reduction in lattice thermal conductivity, making the ZT value of Ag 8 Ge 0.9 Sn 0.1 Se 6 stands among the highest in the Ag 8 GeSe 6 system at present. Argyrodite compound Ag 8 GeSe 6 (AGS) as one of the superionic conductors possesses unique crystal structures: the rigid anionic framework [GeSe 4 ]4- and mobile cation (Ag). Hence its lattice thermal conductivity is rather low due to the action of the mobile cation (Ag). However, this compound has neither high carrier concentration (0.15 × 1016 cm−3 at 300 K and 0.61 × 1016 cm−3 at 370 K) nor high thermoelectric performance (the figure of the merit (ZT) of<0.4). So in this work, we enhance the carrier concentration by more than one order of magnitude at 373 K through the band structure engineering via the substitution of Sn for Ge. In the mean time, the lattice thermal conductivity (κ L) reduces from 0.26 W/mK to 0.16 W/mK at 750 K. As a consequence, the ZT value of Ag 8 Ge 0.9 Sn 0.1 Se 6 is boosted to ~ 1.05. This value is about 2.8 times that of the pristine AGS (0.38 at 750 K) and stands among the highest in this family so far. The above results confirm that the isoelectronic substitution of Sn for Ge in the anionic framework of AGS is an effective way to realize its high TE performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
