Agroforestry can address multiple environmental challenges across the agricultural sector, for example biodiversity loss and soil degradation. However, agroforestry uptake remains low in Germany. Since economic considerations are important for farmer uptake, this paper compares the economic performance of conventional arable farming with silvoarable alley cropping in Brandenburg. Using a modelling approach, the net present value (NPV) is calculated to assess the competitiveness of alley cropping with poplar compared to arable farming under different scenarios. These scenarios cover a range of crops, rotation schedules, alley widths, woodchip prices, and yield levels. Additionally, policy measures that can compensate for potential economic losses associated with transitioning to agroforestry are considered. Results show that short rotation alley cropping had higher NPVs than medium rotation alley cropping, mainly due to cash-flow characteristics. Short rotation alley cropping can be competitive at high woodchip prices without policy support, while at low or average prices alley cropping needs subsidies to be competitive. Medium rotation systems at all price levels were not competitive unless policy support was provided. Current policy payments were unable to make silvoarable alley cropping competitive except at high woodchip prices. When subsidies increase, alley cropping can be competitive even at low or average woodchip prices and over a range of site conditions. Crop models are valuable tools for simulating and assessing genotype‐by‐environment interactions. In most studies, these models are parameterized based on crop data from a few sites and years, which often limits their applicability to a broader geographic context. Therefore, we utilize countrywide multi‐environment variety trial data in this study to implement a genotype‐specific model parameterization for winter rye (Secale cereale L.) in Germany. We use the Crop and Environment REsource Synthesis (CERES) model originally used for wheat available in the decision support system for agrotechnology transfer (DSSAT) framework and adapt and evaluate it for rye. Calibration and evaluation involved a comprehensive agronomic trial datasets for the rye cultivar Palazzo, encompassing 194 site‐years of experiments covering various cereal production regions in Germany. The parameterization followed a structured approach, encompassing phenology, growth, and yield‐specific coefficients. The parameterized CSM‐CERES‐Rye (where CSM is cropping system model) demonstrated reasonable accuracy in simulating critical crop parameters, including aboveground biomass, leaf area index, tiller, grain number, unit seed weight, and grain yield. The model is available for diverse model‐based assessments of rye cultivation, including evaluating crop management, analyzing crop rotations, and assessing rye's suitability across varied environments, making it valuable for sustainable agriculture and decision‐making. Monoculture croplands are a major source of global anthropogenic emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to ozone depletion. Agroforestry has the potential to reduce N2O emissions. Presently, there is no systematic comparison of soil N2O emissions between cropland agroforestry and monoculture systems in Central Europe. We investigated the effects of converting the monoculture cropland system into the alley cropping agroforestry system on soil N2O fluxes at three sites (each site has paired agroforestry and monoculture) in Germany, where agroforestry combined crop rows and poplar short‐rotation coppice (SRC). We measured soil N2O fluxes monthly over 2 years (March 2018–January 2020) using static vented chambers. Annual soil N2O emissions from agroforestry ranged from 0.21 to 2.73 kg N ha−1 year−1, whereas monoculture N2O emissions ranged from 0.34 to 3.00 kg N ha−1 year−1. During the rotation of corn crop, with high fertilization rates, agroforestry reduced soil N2O emissions by 9% to 56% compared to monocultures. This was mainly caused by low soil N2O emissions from the unfertilized agroforestry tree rows. Soil N2O fluxes were predominantly controlled by soil mineral N in both agroforestry and monoculture systems. A survey across Germany was undertaken from 2016-2019 to evaluate effects of management system (organic vs conventional), pedo-climatic conditions and crop rotation history on faba bean root health status, diversity of major root rot pathogens and yield. Root rot incidence was generally low and there was no effect of the management system on the spectrum of pathogens isolated. Among the most common fungal species identified, frequencies of Fusarium redolens and Didymella pinodella were significantly higher in roots from organic fields compared with conventional and lower was observed for F. avenaceum, F. tricinctum and F. culmorum. Faba bean roots were colonized at similar rates by F. equiseti and the members of the F. oxysporum (FOSC) and F. solani (FSSC) species complexes in both management systems. Almost no legumes had been grown in the 5-11 years preceding the conventional faba beans surveyed while legumes had almost always been present during this period in the organic fields. This difference in rotational histories between the farming systems led to apparent cropping systems effects on the isolation frequencies of several species. For example, D. pinodella was ubiquitous in organic fields with a high frequency of legumes in the rotations but much rarer and often absent in conventional fields. Pedoclimatic conditions, particularly cool conditions at sowing and plant emergence and/or during the vegetative season favored most of the most prevalent Fusarium species identified in this study. In organic systems, yields correlated negatively with D. pinodella and F. redolens frequencies whereas higher levels of F. tricintum in faba bean roots had a positive correlation with yield. In conventional systems, faba bean yields depended more on the total precipitation before sowing and during the main growing season but were also negatively correlated with the frequencies of FOSC and F. culmorum. Phylogenetic analysis based on the TEF1 alpha locus indicated that the FSSC isolates mainly belonged to the F. pisi lineage. In contrast, the FOSC isolates were placed in 9 different lineages, with a conspicuous dominance of F. libertatis that has until now not been associated with any leguminous host. The cultivation of perennial wild plant mixtures (WPMs) is becoming increasingly important in Germany for providing sustainably produced bioenergy. However, perennial energy cropping systems always raise the question of how to reclaim the land for arable crops. This study examined this issue by looking at how a former WPM area was returned to arable cropping for an organic farm. From 2013 to 2018, the WPM area was harvested annually in the autumn. From 2019 to 2020, it was co-managed with the surrounding land as a semi-intensive grassland under a three-cut regime. The area was then ploughed in the spring of 2021 to grow silage maize. Weeds were controlled mechanically once. Nevertheless, the perennial wild plant species grew vigorously, with common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.) standing out with a total fresh matter share of 29.0%. This maize–WPM mixture achieved a dry matter yield of 15.5 ± 5.5 Mg ha−1, which was notably but not significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that of silage maize growing next to the former WPM area (23.4 ± 5.5 Mg ha−1). After silage maize, winter wheat was sown in the autumn of 2021 and further regrowth of common tansy was observed in the spring of 2022. Assessing agricultural sustainability is one of the most challenging tasks related to expertise and support methodologies because it entails multidisciplinary aspects and builds on cultural and value-based elements. Thus, agricultural sustainability should be considered a social concept, reliable enough to support decision makers and policy development in a broad context. The aim of this manuscript was to develop a methodology for the assessment of the sustainability of soil improving cropping systems (SICS) in Europe. For this purpose, a decision tree based on weights (%) was chosen because it allows more flexibility. The methodology was tested with data from the SoilCare Horizon 2020 study site in Germany for the assessment of the impact of the integration of cover crops into the crop rotation. The effect on the environmental indicators was slightly positive, but most assessed properties did not change over the short course of the experiment. Farmers reported that the increase in workload was outweighed by a reputation gain for using cover crops. The incorporation of cover crops reduced slightly the profitability, due to the costs for seeds and establishment of cover crops. Tree strips on agricultural production sites offer many economic, ecological and social advantages. However, the introduction of trees creates a transition zone between tree strips and crop land. Here, trees and crop plants compete for resources such as space, nutrients, water and light, which causes stress in the low‐competitive system. On the other hand, facilitation such as additional nutrient input through tree leaf litter and fine roots are possible. This study aims to provide indications for competition and benefits that can arise for plants growing in the transition zone of a temperate short rotation alley cropping agroforestry system (SRACS). Various climatic and plant‐growth parameters were investigated between 2013 and 2019 at different positions of an SRACS with fast‐growing poplars in northern Germany. Reduced yield of wheat, oilseed rape and silage maize close to the tree strip was associated with greater soil water tension in 30 and 60 cm soil depth due to the presence of poplar roots, reduced solar radiation due to tree shading and leaf litter coverage. In contrast, poplars growing in the outer rows produced more biomass than those in the inner rows due to the additional availability of space, light and nutrients taken from the crop field. In organic farming the control of perennial weed species, in particular Cirsium arvense, can be a major concern for farmers, especially if there is no regulation through perennial forage production. To test whether the stubble cleaner (SC), an enhanced skim plow (PL), is as effective in the control of C. arvense and other weeds as conventional ploughing and perennial forage production, an organic field experiment was established. Three different tillage/crop rotation systems were compared: an SC system and a PL system, both in a cereal-based crop rotation and an additional PL system in a crop rotation that included a perennial alfalfa–grass mixture (PLALF). In the SC system, tillage was carried out solely with the SC, while in the PL and PLALF systems, ploughing was alternated with chiseling. In the fifth year, each main plot was divided into subplots, and seven different cover crop treatments were integrated into each of the three systems. The effects of the three systems and the cover crop treatments on weed cover and density, weed biomass, and weed diversity in the sixth and seventh year of the experiment are the subjects of this paper. The choice of cover crop species was of minor importance for weed control. The PLALF system was generally more effective in controlling C. arvense than the PL and SC systems. No significant differences between the PL and SC systems regarding the control of C. arvense could be identified in four of five assessments. The SC system had significantly higher total weed density than the PLALF and PL systems in both years. However, the differences in weed emergence between the PL and SC systems diminished until the assessment of weed cover and biomass in the main crops, when no significant differences between these two systems (2012) or no differences at all (2013) could be identified. Species richness was not significantly influenced by the tillage/crop rotation system in both years. Evenness and Shannon–Wiener index were significantly higher in the PLALF and PL systems than in the SC system on most assessment dates in 2012. In 2013 there was no clear trend regarding evenness and Shannon-Wiener index probably due to a hoeing operation.. In conclusion, for weed control, the choice of crop rotation was more important than the choice of tillage method, while for the diversity of the weed community, the choice of tillage method was more important than the crop rotation. Long-term experiments are an important tool to investigate the effects of crop rotation and fertilization measures under climate change conditions. However, there are few studies on nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops in long-term cropping systems in Europe, but no consolidate studies in Germany. We analyzed a long-term experiment established in 1982 to observe the role of legumes on total nitrogen uptake, NUE, agronomic efficiency, nitrogen response index and N recovery efficiency compared to fallow land and cereals in a crop rotation over the long-term. The experiment included five different precrops (fallow land, maize, oat, field bean and clover mulch) in combination with four levels of fertilization (control, PK, PK+N with reduced dosage, and PK+N with full dosage followed by three years of cereal cultivation (winter wheat, winter rye, summer barley) in all treatments. The field trial was conducted as a fully factorial split plot design, with spatially randomized field repetitions in four blocks. Long-term mineral NPK fertilization improved the N uptake of winter wheat (185.7 kg N ha−1), winter rye (152.2 kg N ha−1) and summer barley (92.2 kg N ha−1) when the higher level of fertilization (NPK 100%) was implemented. A year-round application of clover mulch as green manure in the rotational system resulted in higher NUE (up to 37%) compared to fallow land after 40 years. Crop rotation with oat and maize (100% cereals) led to lower NUE (up to 30%) compared to fallow land. Clover mulch (198%), field bean (155%), fallow land (148%) and maize (119%) significantly increased the N uptake of wheat compared to oat in 2015. Over time, the agronomic efficiency was increased. This increase was 4 or 5 times higher in the 9th and 10th crop rotation compared to the beginning of the experiment (in 1983). Nitrogen response index of clover mulch was approximately 33–37% lower than fallow land at the beginning of the experiment in 1983 and 45–50% lower over the 40 years. N recovery efficiency values of winter wheat (94%), winter rye (66%) and summer barley (46%) increased within the 10th crop rotation compared to the beginning of the long-term experiment. Combining clover mulch as a green manure with mineral fertilizer has greater potential to improve NUE and crop productivity by increasing soil N availability. Alley cropping agroforestry systems (ACS) are ascribed to have manifold positive ecological effects; nevertheless their application is still limited due to uncertain productivity of the agricultural crop, especially in the tree-crop competition zone. Therefore, this study investigated the variability of oilseed rape and winter wheat yield, respectively, at different distances from the tree strip edge in 2016 and 2017 in an ACS established in 2008 in northern Germany. The ACS consisted of strips of fast-growing poplars alternating with narrow (48 m) and wide (96 m) crop alleys, each with a crop rotation including winter oilseed rape and winter wheat. Each tree strip contained 6 rows of poplars with a density of 10,000 trees per ha. Moreover, multi-year (2009–2016) crop yield data of oilseed rape and winter wheat in the narrow and wide crop alleys were compared with those of a corresponding non-agroforestry control field. In general, crop yields observed in 2016 and 2017 in the narrow crop alleys at 1 m from the tree strip edges were on average 77% (oilseed rape) and 55% (winter wheat) lower than in the middle of the crop alley. One reason for low yield close to the tree strips might be the leaf litter coverage of the seedlings in autumn. Leaf litter deposition was highest at 1 m on the windward and the leeward side of the tree strips in 2015 and on the leeward side in 2016, respectively. However, the average long-term crop yields of the narrow crop alley, the wide crop alley and the control field did not differ substantially among each other. Although oilseed rape and winter wheat yields were lower close to the tree strips, this yield reduction did not negatively influence the average long-term crop yields of the ACS. Agricultural landscapes are globally dominated by monocultures under intensive management. This is one of the main reasons for biodiversity loss and insect population decline in many regions all over the world. Agroecosystem biodiversity in these areas can be enhanced by cropping system diversification, such as crop rotations. Yet, long‐term studies on effects of crop rotations on aboveground agrobiodiversity are lacking. We set up a 10‐year long‐term crop rotation experiment in Central Germany and monitored the temporal dynamics of aboveground arthropods over a full cultivation period to investigate influence of current and preceding crop identity and cropping system diversification on activity density, species richness, and community structure. We found that species composition was strongly influenced by currently grown crop although effect on arthropods varied between species groups. Especially, winter oilseed rape strongly affects arthropod community structure. Interestingly, we were also able to show an influence of the preceding crops, indicating an ecological memory effect in the aboveground arthropod community. Our results show that crop identity of both currently and previously grown crops in crop rotations may lead to an increase in arthropod activity density and changes in species composition. Diversified crop rotations including appropriate crops can be an easily implemented tool to increase arthropod biodiversity and biomass at large spatial and temporal scales, particularly in areas dominated by a single crop (e.g., wheat, maize). Crop cultivation intensifies globally, which can jeopardize biodiversity and the resilience of cropping systems. We investigate changes in crop rotations as one intensification metric for half of the croplands in Germany with annual field-level land-use data from 2005 to 2018. We proxy crop rotations with crop sequences and compare how these sequences changed among three seven-year periods. The results reveal an overall high diversity of crop sequences in Germany. Half of the cropland has crop sequences with four or more crops within a seven-year period, while continuous cultivation of the same crop is present on only 2% of the cropland. Larger farms tend to have more diverse crop sequences and organic farms have lower shares of cereal crops. In three federal states, crop rotations became less structurally diverse over time, i.e. the number of crops and the number of changes between crops decreased. In one state, structural diversity increased and the proportion of monocropping decreased. The functional diversity of the crop sequences, which measures the share of winter and spring crops as well as the share of leaf and cereal crops per sequence, remained largely stable. Trends towards cereal- or leaf-crop dominated sequences varied between the states, and no clear overall dynamic could be observed. However, the share of winter crops per sequence decreased in all four federal states. Quantifying the dynamics of crop sequences at the field level is an important metric of land-use intensity and can reveal the patterns of land-use intensification. Integrating leys, cover crops, and animal manures constitute promising avenues to reach annual soil organic carbon changes (ΔSOC) >0.4% in forage and grain-based crop rotations, rates required to offset the increasing C emissions from fossil fuels ("4 per mille" initiative). How these practices and rotations perform in reaching this aim was object of analysis in this paper. Five cropping systems (CS), including three three-year forage and grain-based crop rotations containing annual grass-clover leys (FR and MR) or cover crops (GR), and two contrasting controls (continuous silage maize (CM), and permanent grassland (PG)) were compared for their impact on SOC stocks over eight years (2010–2018). The CS were unfertilized (N0) or fertilized using cattle slurry (N1) at a rate of 240 kg N ha−1 yr−1 applied in the non-leguminous crops. The ΔSOC of the top 30 cm soil layer and the annual carbon inputs (Cin) from slurry applications and plant residues were estimated, their relationship established, and the slurry-induced C retention coefficient was determined. The FR and MR SOC stocks remained stable at N1, while the GR and CM SOC decreased over time by tendency even at N1. Only the PG reached ΔSOC >0.4%. Differences in ΔSOC between CS and N rates were highly associated with the system-specific increase in belowground Cin, induced by slurry applications. Slurry-induced C retention coefficients differed strongly between CS: CM (3%) followed by GR (12%), and by FR and MR (20–15%), and lastly by PG (24%). Promoting belowground carbon inputs was identified as an efficient way to reach significant increases in ΔSOC. Abstract: Power based on biomass, in particular biogas, is increasing, with a concomitant increase in the need for energy crop production. The objective of this study was to determine the profitability of biogas substrate production on a marginal site in southwestern Germany. The effects of crop rotation and nitrogen fertilization level were evaluated in a three-year filed experiment. Production costs for supply of biogas substrates and sales of produced electricity were assessed using five crop rotations (CR1: annual monoculture maize; CR2: perennial monoculture perennial ryegrass; CR3: perennial monoculture Jerusalem artichoke; CR4: three-course crop rotation of sorghum – winter triticale – clover grass; CR5: four-course crop rotation of catch crop – maize – winter wheat – winter triticale) and three nitrogen fertilization levels (zero, middle and high levels of nitrogen). The variables were production costs, dry matter yield, substrate costs, energy output, biomass energy supply price, biomass energy sales price and sale/supply ratio. Production costs increased in the order CR4 (1252 € ha−1 a−1) < CR2 (1256 € ha−1 a−1) < CR5 (1404 € ha−1 a−1) < CR3 (1462 € ha−1 a−1) < CR1 (1649 € ha−1 a−1) due to differing mechanical cultivation needs. Dry matter yields ranged from 10.8 t ha−1 a−1 (CR3) to 4.0 t ha−1 a−1 (CR2) and showed significantly higher yields with increasing fertilization levels. Accounting for all variables, the lowest biomass energy supply price was achieved with CR3 (6.6 ct kWh−1), and increased in the order CR1 < CR5 < CR4 < CR2 (12.4 ct kWh−1). It was determined that only CR3 and CR1 were effective for the production of biogas substrates on marginal sites. The effect of various rotations and fallow periods on development of sugar beet, product quality and nematode infestation as well as soil physical parameters have been studied in the sugar beet rotation experiment Etzdorf, which had been started in 1970 on a Haplic Chernozem in the state Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 2006, for the first time various soil physical parameters have been analysed. The different rotations did not affect the parameters significantly. This does also apply to the total organic carbon content, which was 2.08 vol. % in sugar beet monoculture and thus only 0.16 vol. % in a rotation with only 20% sugar beet. Serious yield effects were measured if the proportion of sugar beet in the rotation was increased to 25% and more. The break in the rotation affected the yield and quality parameters. In situations with a substantial nematode infestation breaks of a minimum of three years are recommended. If this recommendation is exceeded a critical infestation with 500 eggs and larvae in 100 g soil causes yield decreases of a minimum of 5% on average, which might be higher in single years. This affects yield stability depending on seasonal weather conditions. In dem Fruchtfolgeversuch auf Loss-Schwarzerde in Etzdorf (Sachsen-Anhalt), angelegt 1970, wurden die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Anbaukonzentrationen und Anbaupausen bei Zuckerruben auf die Pflanzenentwicklung, Produktqualitat und den Nematodenbesatz als auch auf bodenphysikalische Parameter untersucht. Bei den 2006 erstmalig in Krume und Unterboden unter Zuckerruben ermittelten bodenphysikalischen Eigenschaften (Trockenrohdichte, Grobporenvolumen und Wasserleitfahigkeit) wurden zwischen den Anbaukonzentrationen nur geringe Differenzierungen festgestellt. Das trifft auch fur den TOC-Gehalt zu, der bei Rubendaueranbau (2,08 M.-%) gegenuber 20% Anteil in der Fruchtfolge nur um 0,16 M.-% abnahm. Deutliche Ertragseinbussen treten bei Zuckerrubenanteilen von mehr als 25% in der Fruchtfolge auf. Die Anbaupausen wirken sich auf den Korper- und Zuckerertrag stark differenzierend aus, besonders wenn mehrere Zuckerrubenfelder in die Rotation einbezogen werden. Auf den nematodenverseuchten Standorten sind deshalb Anbaupausen von mindestens 3 Jahren einzuhalten. Bei Uberschreitung dieser Empfehlung werden in Abhangigkeit vom Ausgangszustand die kritischen Nematoden-Verseuchungswerte von 500 Eier und Larven je 100 g Boden, die zu gesicherten Ertragsausfallen von mehr als 5% fuhren, in den Einzeljahren haufiger erreicht und teilweise auch wesentlich ubertroffen. Unter diesen Bedingungen wird in Abhangigkeit von jahresspezifischen Einflussen die Ertragssicherheit ungunstig beeinflusst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As agricultural policies affect land use, they have effects on the amount of soil erosion in agricultural regions through changes of the economic conditions of agricultural production. Prices of inputs and outputs, regulations and incentives can change, forcing or encouraging farmers to adopt new crop rotations. This paper shows how a bio-economic model can be used to describe and estimate the effects of policies on agricultural production and the risk of soil erosion at the example of a region in North-Eastern Germany. The model uses both an assessment tool that is based on a fuzzy-logic approach for the estimation of soil erosion risk of cropping practices, and a linear programming model, that simulates farmers’ economic behaviour under the assumption of gross margin maximisation being the main goal of farmers’ actions. The analysed policy options were both a targeted and an untargeted incentive programme for reduced tillage, and a restriction option where high erosive crops are not allowed on high erodible field types. The results show that policy changes can have an impact on soil erosion. Furthermore, soil conservation policies are shown to have different levels of efficiency in terms of reduced soil erosion related to the costs of the policy. In the case of this study, a restriction option was more efficient than the incentive options. The results of such simulations can serve as a decision support for the development of soil conservation policies and help to foresee the effects of general changes of agricultural policies. Alopecurus myosuroides Huds. (blackgrass) frequently occurs in Western European cropping systems. It causes high yield losses in winter-cereals and winter-oil-seed rape. Several preventive measures to control blackgrass are available, however long-term studies with combinations of preventive and direct control methods are rare. In this seven-year study at two locations in Germany, three crop rotations with different proportions of winter-annual crops, four herbicide strategies and four tillage measures were combined and their interactions were analyzed. Aim was to investigate the effects on blackgrass densities, crop yields and contribution margins. Densities increased from 14 to 3098 heads m-2 and 201 to 3563 heads m-2 in the rotation containing only winter-annual crops without weed control and reduced tillage. Rotations with spring crops reduced densities by up to 98%. Inversion tillage with a moldboard plough and false seedbed preparation using a harrow (shallow) and a rotary harrow (deep) reduced blackgrass infestations by up to 70% compared to solely reduced conservation tillage with a chisel plough. Blackgrass densities were 23–99% (average 59%) lower, when herbicide Mode of Action (MOA) was rotated in every year compared to herbicide strategy continuously using the same MOA. Grain yield loss in the control plots due to blackgrass competition amounted up to 3.0 t ha-1 (41%). Contribution margins were highest in the cropping systems that combine crop rotation, inversion tillage, false seedbed preparation and herbicide MOA rotation. The results highlight the benefits of integrated weed management in regard to weed control and economic sustainability.
