Purpose: Leadership training refers to the process of helping individuals develop skills to successfully perform in leadership positions. Existing leadership programs have several drawbacks, including the paucity of leadership programs designed for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals in health care. The authors addressed this gap by creating and hosting Q-Forward (formerly Q-Med), the first conference focused specifically on leadership development for LGBTQ+ health trainees. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, the authors explain how a conference focused on leadership development for LGBTQ+ health trainees can have benefits for trainees, patients and the health-care system. The authors also report the conference proceedings, including planning, participants, guiding principles and programming. Originality/value: This conference was the first conference for LGBTQ+ health trainees focused specifically on leadership training. The authors believe that the conference was unique, and that such training represents an essential step toward long-term improvements in the health of LGBTQ+ people and other populations. This paper discusses the critical issues that surround the development of an orofacial pain program in a dental school and suggests strategies to address them. Since the University of Minnesota has an established orofacial pain program involved in both predoctotal and postdoctoral teaching, clinical and basic research, and interdisciplinary patient care over the past 20 years, this article uses this as a model for development of an orofacial pain program. The proposal includes overall goals, background and rationale, specific aims, and program activities, including teaching, research, patient care, and financial and resource needs. Many health sciences librarians as well as other professionals attend conferences on a regular basis. This study sought to link an innovative peer review process of presented research papers to long-term conference outcomes in the peer-reviewed professional journal literature. An evidence-based conference included a proof-of-concept study to gauge the long-term outcomes from research papers presented during the program. Real-time peer review recommendations from the conference were linked to final versions of articles published in the peer-reviewed literature. The real-time peer review feedback served as the basis for further mentoring to guide prospective authors toward publishing their research results. These efforts resulted in the publication of two of the four research papers in the peer-viewed literature. A third presented paper appeared in a blog because the authors wanted to disseminate their findings more quickly than through the journal literature. The presenters of the fourth paper never published their study. Real-time peer review from this study can be adapted to other professional conferences that include presented research papers. This panel was held at the ASF 2013 conference in Las Vegas, NV, on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. The panel moderator, Stephen Kudenholdt, asked the panel questions based on a Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) white paper published on October 22, 2012, "Building a New Infrastructure for the Secondary Mortgage Market." This white paper addressed 1) a common infrastructure and platform for securitizations by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the GSEs), 2) whether this infrastructure might have some application to the private label market, and 3) the use of that platform for risk-sharing transactions by the GSEs. A highlight of the 2012 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, the pre-conference session on the History of ASIS&T and Information Science and Technology Worldwide drew presenters and attendees from around the globe. The day featured papers on four historical themes, starting with the institutional roots of ASIS&T and recognizing decades of research presented in the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology. The evolution of the field was apparent through a review of information revolutions prompted by the printing press, the post-World War II information crisis and the Internet, as well as through presentations on digital curation,ongoing work on relevance, sense-making theory and developments from Croatia to France.Discussion of the historical contexts of technology innovations and impacts consideredphotographic documentary techniques, binary computing and networking standards. The development of foundational ideas was explored through presentations on pioneering document indexing methods, the semantic challenge of term-oriented retrieval, early European perceptions of classification systems and the French view of communication and information science. Kampmann C. E. (1996) Feedback loop gains and system behavior Proceedings of the 1996 International System Dynamics Conference. System Dynamics Society, Boston, MA, USA In the past two decades, there has been a steady growth of analytical tools that can help the system dynamicist understand and test the behavior of large models. Without such tools, we must resort to simulation experiments and intuition developed from simple, low-order, systems. While this traditional approach has served us well, there is always the danger that we overlook important mechanisms in larger systems or falsely attribute behavior patterns to particular structures. Among these new analytical tools, eigenvalue elasticity analysis (EEA) has received the most attention, perhaps because it rests on a consistent and comprehensive theoretical foundation. The approach involves decomposing system outcomes into characteristic behavior modes, each characterized by an eigenvalue of the linearized system matrix, and then examining how each eigenvalue or behavior mode is affected by small changes in the parameters of the system. The eigenvalue elasticity of a parameter change is a dimensionless number, defined as the fractional change in the eigenvalue resulting from a fractional infinitesimal change in that parameter. Parameters or structural links or loops in the model that have large elasticities are then interpreted as playing a dominant role in that behavior mode. EEA was first used by Nathan Forrester in his doctoral dissertation from 1982. However, it did not receive much attention in the field until the 1996 International System Dynamics Conference, where Christian Kampmann presented a rigorous analysis of the topology of feedback loop structures and how eigenvalue elasticities are related to the strength of individual feedback loops. Since then, an entire strand of research has been devoted to the development and application of EEA, where Kampmann's conference paper remains a seminal reference. Yet until now, the paper has never been published, and researchers have had to rely on private circulation of various drafts of the paper. With this archival publication, we wish to remedy this deficiency in the hope that the work will inspire others to continue developing EEA and further the high standards of analytical rigor that Kampmann's paper represents. Abstract Linking feedback loops and system behavior is part of the foundation of system dynamics, yet the lack of formal tools has so far prevented a systematic application of the concept, except for very simple systems. Having such tools at their disposal would be a great help to analysts in understanding large, complicated simulation models. The paper applies tools from graph theory formally linking individual feedback loop strengths to the system eigenvalues. The significance of a link or a loop gain and an eigenvalue can be expressed in the eigenvalue elasticity, i.e., the relative change of an eigenvalue resulting from a relative change in the gain. The elasticities of individual links and loops may be found through simple matrix operations on the linearized system. Even though the number of feedback loops can grow rapidly with system size, reaching astronomical proportions even for modest systems, a central result of the paper is that one may restrict attention to an independent subset which typically grows only linearly and at most as the square of system size. An algorithm for finding an independent loop set is presented, along with suggestions for how to augment it to select loops with large elasticities. For illustration, the method is applied to a well-known system: the simple long-wave model. Because this model exhibits highly nonlinear behavior, it sheds light on the usefulness of linear methods to nonlinear system. The analysis leads to a more thorough and deeper understanding of the system and sheds new light on conventional wisdom regarding the role of many of the system's feedback loops. ABSTRACT Aims This paper describes alcohol industry involvement in the 2010 annual conference proceedings of the National Conference of State Liquor Administrators (NCSLA) in the United States. Design The author attended the conference, observed conference attendees and panelists and identified key themes in the panel sessions. Setting The NCSLA Annual Meeting took place 20-24 June 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Participants NCSLA meeting attendees and panelists were professionals from state alcohol control systems; federal government agencies; and companies representing the alcohol industry. Measurements The total number of conference attendees and participants were counted as well as the number of attendees and participants from regulator, industry and public health sectors. Findings More than two-thirds (72.2%) of the 187 conference attendees were from alcohol producers, importers, wholesalers, retailers or their attorneys. Nearly two-thirds (65.0%) of the 40 panelists were from the alcohol industry. The author of this paper was the only attendee, and the only panelist, representing public health policy. Conclusions The National Conference of State Liquor Administrators in the United States is dominated by the private, global companies that produce, import, distribute and sell alcohol, highlighting a lack of public health considerations within the Association's liquor control agenda. This perspective paper seeks to lay out an efficient approach for health care providers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in interventions aimed at improving care coordination to partner in locating and using applicable care coordination theory. The objective is to learn from relevant theory-based literature about fit between intervention options and coordination needs, thereby bringing insights from theory to enhance intervention design, implementation, and troubleshooting. To take this idea from an abstract notion to tangible application, our workgroup on models and measures from the Veterans Health Administration (VA) State of the Art (SOTA) conference on care coordination first summarizes our distillation of care coordination theoretical frameworks (models) into three common conceptual domains-context of an intervention, locus in which an intervention is applied, and specific design features of the intervention. Then we apply these three conceptual domains to four cases of care coordination interventions ("use cases") chosen to represent various scopes and stages of interventions to improve care coordination for veterans. Taken together, these examples make theory more accessible and practical by demonstrating how it can be applied to specific cases. Delivering well-coordinated care is essential for optimizing clinical outcomes, enhancing patient care experiences, minimizing costs, and increasing provider satisfaction. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) has built a strong foundation for internally coordinating care. However, VA faces mounting internal care coordination challenges due to growth in the number of Veterans using VA care, high complexity in Veterans' care needs, the breadth and depth of VA services, and increasing use of virtual care. VA's Health Services Research and Development service with the Office of Research and Development held a conference assessing the state-of-the-art (SOTA) on care coordination. One workgroup within the SOTA focused on coordination between VA providers for high-need Veterans, including (1) Veterans with multiple chronic conditions; (2) Veterans with high-intensity, focused, specialty care needs; (3) Veterans experiencing care transitions; (4) Veterans with severe mental illness; (5) and Veterans with homelessness and/or substance use disorders. We report on this workgroup's recommendations for policy and organizational initiatives and identify questions for further research. Recommendations from a separate workgroup on coordinating VA and non-VA care are contained in a companion paper. Leaders from research, clinical services, and VA policy will need to partner closely as they develop, implement, assess, and spread effective practices if VA is to fully realize its potential for delivering highly coordinated care to every Veteran. This paper reflects on the 30th anniversary of the African Geographical Review (AGR) by looking at the history and future of the journal. It originated in a panel discussion organized by the current editors of the AGR at the 2010 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) in Seattle. It synthesizes presentations made by participants of the panel including William Moseley, Florence Margai, Isaac Luginaah, Maano Ramutsindela, Padraig Carmody, Kefa Otiso, Bakama BakamaNume, and Ian Yeboah among others. The paper demonstrates how the East African Geographical Review (EAGR), a regional journal serving the East African region from 1963 to 1996, has grown into the mouthpiece of the Africa Specialty Group (ASG) of the AAG. The role of individual agency and the tenacity of the editors of the journal since its arrival in the United States have been central in growing it into the ASG's mouth piece. One of the abstract is , the U.S. news and world reports reported that 1.1 million students graduated from our universities last spring. Less than 20 percent had obtained full-time employment by graduation. This article will make a case for the development of student portfolios to enhance the job interviewing experience. A student portfolio is a document that presents pieces of evidence portraying educational experiences, development of skills and extracurricular activities highlighting a student's strengths. over their academic career. Historically used by students in other academic areas such as art, photography and architecture, business schools have largely ignored this important strategic interviewing tool. Another abstract explores the importance of classroom behaviors of marketing professors to the success of the students. One hundred fifty marketing students from three universities were surveyed to determine which professor behaviors students perceived as contributing most to their academic success.
