Abstract

Recent palaeomagnetic and seismological studies have strengthened the suggestion that the Moon once possessed a core dynamo. Despite its importance as a constraint on lunar evolution, there is currently no consensus on how such a dynamo was driven. Two groups working independently have arrived at the idea that the lunar dynamo was powered by mechanical stirring of the liquid core. Dwyer et al. investigate the mechanism of a dynamo driven by continuous mechanical stirring arising from the differential motion between the solid silicate mantle and the liquid core beneath. They show that the fluid motions and the power required to drive a dynamo operating continuously for more than 1 billion years are readily obtained by such mechanical stirring. Le Bars et al. propose a model whereby the dynamo action comes from impact-induced changes in the Moon's rotation rate. They show that basin-forming impact events are energetic enough to have unlocked the Moon from synchronous rotation, and that the subsequent large-scale fluid flows in the core, excited by the tidal distortion of the core–mantle boundary, could have powered a lunar dynamo. The origin of lunar magnetic anomalies1,2,3,4,5 remains unresolved after their discovery more than four decades ago. A commonly invoked hypothesis is that the Moon might once have possessed a thermally driven core dynamo3, but this theory is problematical given the small size of the core and the required surface magnetic field strengths6. An alternative hypothesis is that impact events might have amplified ambient fields near the antipodes of the largest basins7, but many magnetic anomalies exist that are not associated with basin antipodes. Here we propose a new model for magnetic field generation, in which dynamo action comes from impact-induced changes in the Moon’s rotation rate. Basin-forming impact events are energetic enough to have unlocked the Moon from synchronous rotation8, and we demonstrate that the subsequent large-scale fluid flows in the core, excited by the tidal distortion of the core–mantle boundary9, could have powered a lunar dynamo. Predicted surface magnetic field strengths are on the order of several microteslas, consistent with palaeomagnetic measurements5, and the duration of these fields is sufficient to explain the central magnetic anomalies associated with several large impact basins.

International audience; The spin crossover (SCO) transition is investigated in two molecular Co 2+ bisimide compounds, Co(dpzca) 2 and Co(pypzca) 2 (where Hdpzca = N-(2-pyrazylcarbonyl)-2pyrazinecarboxamide and Hpypzca = N-(2-pyrazylcarbonyl)-2-pyridinecarboxamide). They crystallize solvent-free with similar crystal structures but have been reported to exhibit different temperature-dependent magnetic behaviors. Using temperature-and pressure-dependent element selective X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS and XMCD) measurements, it is revealed herein that although Co(pypzca) 2 does not afford a temperature-induced SCO, it undergoes a reversible pressure-induced SCO transition that is less abrupt, and is complete at a higher pressure (3.5 GPa), than for Co(dpzca) 2 (0.5 GPa). Wave function-based calculations performed on isolated complexes confirm the LS state nature of Co(dpzca) 2 at low temperatures, and the values of spin and orbital magnetic moments are determined. Calculations show the similarity of groundstate properties for HS Co(dpzca) 2 and HS Co(pypzca) 2 and the existence of a double-well HS-LS in the potential energy surface for both compounds. It is concluded that the observed, significant differences in pressure-and temperature-induced SCO transitions of Co(dpzca) 2 versus Co(pypzca) 2 are probably due to different intermolecular interactions between Co(dpzca) 2 and Co(pypzca) 2 , which would hamper the temperature-induced SCO in Co(pypzca) 2 .

Abstract

SSRN preprint article https://ssrn.com/abstract=4108410; International audience; Nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently made remarkable progress as one of the most promising next-generation photovoltaic technologies. Still, it is highly desirable to enhance the light harvesting for the sake of photoactive layer with a limited thickness. In this work, we developed efficient nonfullerene OSCs through incorporating hybrid plasmonic metal nanostructures (MNS) consisted of gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) and gold nanospheres (AuNSs). The synergistic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of hybrid MNS has been predesigned to perfectly match with the absorption range of nonfullerene photoactive layer especially in the near-infrared (NIR) region, subsequently delivering enhanced light harvesting and photo-response. The plasmonic enhancement mechanisms were systematically investigated by theoretical simulations and various experimental measurements, showing that hybrid MNS exhibited significant broadband near field enhancement and scattering effect as well as the advantage in electrical aspect to facilitate the charge extraction and transport. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was improved from 15.46% to 16.62% for OSCs based on PM6:Y6 due to the synergistic plasmonic effect of hybrid MNS. Overall, this work paves the way for using plasmonic MNS with tunable optical properties as an alternative approach for the development of high-performance OSCs.

International audience; We study the mechanical response of a dislocation-free 2D crystal under homogenous shear using a new mesoscopic approach to crystal plasticity, a Landau-type theory, accounting for the global invariance of the energy in the space of strain tensors while operating with an infinite number of equivalent energy wells. The advantage of this approach is that it eliminates arbitrariness in dealing with topological transitions involved, for instance, in nucleation and annihilation of dislocations. We use discontinuous yielding of pristine micro-crystals as a benchmark problem for the new theory and show that the nature of the catastrophic instability, which in this setting inevitably follows the standard affine response, depends not only on lattice symmetry but also on the orientation of the crystal in the loading device. The ensuing dislocation avalanche involves cooperative dislocation nucleation, resulting in the formation of complex microstructures controlled by a nontrivial self-induced coupling between different plastic mechanisms.

Abstract

International audience; Visible nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are about to become commercially available. However, their infrared counterparts suffer from two key limitations. First, III–V semiconductor technologies are strong competitors. Second, their potential for operation beyond 1.7 µm remains unexplored. The range from 1.5 to 4 µm corresponds to a technological gap in which the efficiency of interband quantum-well-based devices vanishes and quantum cascade lasers are not efficient enough. Powerful infrared LEDs in this range are needed for applications such as active imaging, organic molecule sensing and airfield lighting. Here we report the design of a HgTe nanocrystal-based LED with luminescence between 2 and 2.3 µm. With an external quantum efficiency of 0.3% and radiance up to 3 W Sr−1 m−2, these HgTe LEDs already present a competitive performance for emission above 2 µm.

Abstract

Prussian blue analogue nanocrystals of the CsINiII[CrIII(CN)6] cubic network with 6 nm size were assembled as a single monolayer on highly organized pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies, at the Ni and Cr L2,3 edges, reveal the presence of an easy plane of magnetization evidenced by an opening of the magnetic hysteresis loop (coercive field of ≈200 Oe) when the magnetic field, B, is at 60° relative to the normal to the substrate. The angular dependence of the X-ray natural linear dichroism (XNLD) reveals both an orientation of the nanocrystals on the substrate and an anisotropy of the electronic cloud of the NiII and CrIII coordination sphere species belonging to the nanocrystals' surface. Ligand field multiplet (LFM) calculations that reproduce the experimental data are consistent with an elongated tetragonal distortion of surface NiII coordination sphere responsible for the magnetic behavior of monolayer.

Abstract

Des 1990, l’OMS (1999) a percu l’importance des determinants environnementaux de la sante, ce qui l’a amenee a elargir sa definition de la sante de 1946 : « la sante environnementale comprend les aspects de la sante humaine, y compris la qualite de la vie, qui sont determines par les facteurs physiques, chimiques, biologiques, sociaux, psychosociaux et esthetiques de notre environnement. Elle concerne egalement la politique et les pratiques de gestion, de resorption, de controle et de prevention des facteurs environnementaux susceptibles d’affecter la sante des generations actuelles et futures. »Partant du constat de l’impact de la qualite des ecosystemes sur la sante humaine, le concept d’exposome a emerge. Celui-ci est defini comme la totalite des expositions a des facteurs environnementaux que subit un organisme humain, depuis sa conception jusqu’a sa fin de vie en passant par le stade du developpement in utero (Wild, 2005). La notion de « One health » elaboree par Zindsstag et collaborateurs (2011) insiste en outre sur la bidirectionnalite des relations et appelle a developper des approches integrees pour garantir une sante environnementale globale (humaine, vegetale, animale et ecosystemique). A partir de differents exemples, nous questionnons ici le niveau d’integration disciplinaire et spatio-temporelle necessaire a la prise en compte et a l’operationnalisation du concept de sante environnementale globale. Nous montrons ainsi que la sante environnementale offre un cadre d’actions pour repondre au besoin urgent du developpement d’une gouvernance des risques multidimensionnelle et integree.

Abstract

Polypyrrole (PPy) is a conductive polymer and widely applied in different applications owing to its broadband absorption in the UV-visible, near-infrared (NIR), and short-wave-infrared (SWIR) spectrum, excellent conductivity, and strong photothermal effect. In this work, we explored for the first time the photothermal effect of PPy nanoparticles (PPy-NPs) in a photothermal-induced detector structure and developed a new type of air-stable hybrid PPy-NPs/Pt photodetector (PD) with NIR/SWIR sensitivity. By combining PPy-NPs with a platinum (Pt)-resistive pattern, we fabricated PPy-NPs/Pt PDs that are sensitive to illumination in the wavelength range from 800 to 2000 nm. Under the illumination of λ = 1.5 μm, the maximum photoresponsivity was measured to be ∼1.3 A/W with a 131 μs photoresponse rise time. Owing to the excellent material stability from both PPy-NPs and the Pt pattern, the current photodetectors show long-term stable photoresponsivity when they were stored in air without encapsulation. The results suggest that the PPy-NPs/Pt hybrid PDs are promising candidates for a new type of low-cost and broadband due to their multiple advantages such as free of toxic heavy metals, air stability, and solution processing.

Abstract

ConspectusAstatine (At) is the rarest on Earth of all naturally occurring elements, situated below iodine in the periodic table. While only short-lived isotopes (t1/2 ≤ 8.1 h) are known, 211At is the object of growing attention due to its emission of high-energy alpha particles. Such radiation is highly efficient to eradicate disseminated tumors, provided that the radionuclide is attached to a cancer-targeting molecule. The interest in applications of 211At in nuclear medicine translates into the increasing number of cyclotrons able to produce it. Yet, many challenges related to the minute amounts of available astatine are to be overcome in order to characterize its physical and chemical properties. This point is of paramount importance to develop synthetic strategies and solve the labeling instability in current approaches that limits the use of 211At-labeled radiopharmaceuticals. Despite its discovery in the 1940s, only the past decade has seen a significant rise in the understanding of astatine's basic chemical and radiochemical properties, thanks to the development of new analytical and computational tools.In this Account, we give a concise summary of recent advances in the determination of the physicochemical properties of astatine, putting in perspective the duality of this element which exhibits the characteristics both of a halogen and of a metal. Striking features were evidenced in the recent determination of its Pourbaix diagram such as the identification of stable cationic species, At+ and AtO+, contrasting with other halogens. Like metals, these species were shown to form complexes with anionic ligands and to exhibit a particular affinity for organic species bearing soft donor atoms. On the other hand, astatine shares many characteristics with other halogen elements. For instance, the At- species exists in water, but with the least range of EH-pH stability in the halogen series. Astatine can form molecular interactions through halogen bonding, and it was only recently identified as the strongest halogen-bond donor. This ability is nonetheless affected by relativistic effects, which translate to other peculiarities for this heavy element. For instance, the spin-orbit coupling boosts astatine's propensity to form charge-shift bonds, catching up with the behavior of the lightest halogens (fluorine, chlorine).All these new data have an impact on the development of radiolabeling strategies to turn 211At into radiopharmaceuticals. Inspired by the chemistry of iodine, the chemical approaches have sparsely evolved over the past decades and have long been limited to electrophilic halodemetalation reactions to form astatoaryl compounds. Conversely, recent developments have favored the use of the more stable At- species including the aromatic nucleophilic substitution with diaryliodonium salts or the copper-catalyzed halodeboronation of arylboron precursors. However, it is clear that new bonding modalities are necessary to improve the in vivo stability of 211At-labeled aryl compounds. The tools and data gathered over the past decade will contribute to instigate original strategies for overcoming the challenges offered by this enigmatic element. Alternatives to the C-At bond such as the B-At and the metal-At bonds are typical examples of exciting new axes of research.

However, these two approaches are very rarely combined, although they are highly complementary: our visual system is good at recognizing spatial patterns, whereas our auditory system is better tuned for temporal patterns. In this article, data representation methods are proposed that combine visualization, sonification, and spatial audio techniques, in order to optimize the user’s perception of spatial and temporal patterns in a single display, to increase the feeling of immersion, and to take advantage of multimodal integration mechanisms. Three seismic data sets are used to illustrate the methods, covering different physical phenomena, time scales, spatial distributions, and spatio-temporal dynamics. The methods are adapted to the specificities of each data set, and to the amount of information that the designer wants to display. This leads to further developments, namely the use of audification with two time scales, the switch from pure audification to time-modulated noise, and the switch from pure audification to sonic icons. First user feedback from live demonstrations indicates that the methods presented in this article seem to enhance the perception of spatio-temporal patterns, which is a key parameter to the understanding of seismically active systems, and a step towards apprehending the processes that drive this activity.

Abstract

Doppler ultrasound is the premier modality to analyze blood flow dynamics in clinical practice. With conventional systems, Doppler can either provide a time-resolved quantification of the flow dynamics in sample volumes (spectral Doppler) or an average Doppler velocity/power [color flow imaging (CFI)] in a wide field of view (FOV) but with a limited frame rate. The recent development of ultrafast parallel systems made it possible to evaluate simultaneously color, power, and spectral Doppler in a wide FOV and at high-frame rates but at the expense of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, like conventional Doppler, ultrafast Doppler is subject to aliasing for large velocities and/or large depths. In a recent study, staggered multi-pulse repetition frequency (PRF) sequences were investigated to dealias color-Doppler images. In this work, we exploit the broadband nature of pulse-echo ultrasound and propose a dual-wavelength approach for CFI dealiasing with a constant PRF. We tested the dual-wavelength bandpass processing, in silico , in laminar flow phantom and validated it in vivo in human carotid arteries ( ${n} = 25$ ). The in silico results showed that the Nyquist velocity could be extended up to four times the theoretical limit. In vivo , dealiased CFI were highly consistent with unfolded Spectral Doppler ( ${r}^{2}=0.83$ , ${y}=1.1{x}+0.1$ , ${N}=25$ ) and provided consistent vector flow images. Our results demonstrate that dual-wavelength processing is an efficient method for high-velocity CFI.

International audience; We consider $\sigma$-models on para-complex $\mathbb{Z}_T$-cosets, which are analogues of those on complex homogeneous target spaces considered recently by D. Bykov. For these models, we show the existence of a gauge-invariant Lax connection whose Poisson brackets are ultralocal. Furthermore, its light-cone components commute with one another in the sense of Poisson brackets. This extends a result of O. Brodbeck and M. Zagermann obtained twenty years ago for hermitian symmetric spaces.

Abstract

International audience; Negative ions are of fundamental interest for the understanding of electron correlation and also play an important role in domains such as astrophysics and atmospheric physics. Until recently, the photodetachment of the ground state of the carbon anion C− (4S) suffered from long-standing discrepancies between the results of different calculations as well as between theory and experiment. New theoretical and experimental results were reported in, which are in very good mutual agreement, as well as a new description of the resonant process occurring for photon energies around 6 eV. Following on from of our previous work, we report here the results obtained for photodetachment of the excited state (2D) of C−, in particular over the photon energy range from 0.5 to 2.5 eV where the disagreement between existing calculations are particularly pronounced.

Abstract

Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is essential for the maintenance, expression, and packaging of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Recently, a pathogenic homozygous variant in TFAM (P178L) has been associated with a severe mtDNA depletion syndrome leading to neonatal liver failure and early death. We have performed a biochemical characterization of the TFAM variant P178L in order to understand the molecular basis for the pathogenicity of this mutation. We observe no effects on DNA binding, and compaction of DNA is only mildly affected by the P178L amino acid change. Instead, the mutation severely impairs mtDNA transcription initiation at the mitochondrial heavy and light strand promoters. Molecular modeling suggests that the P178L mutation affects promoter sequence recognition and the interaction between TFAM and the tether helix of POLRMT, thus explaining transcription initiation deficiency.

The PUMAS library is a transport engine for muon and tau leptons in matter. It can operate with a configurable level of details, from a fast deterministic CSDA mode to a detailed Monte~Carlo simulation. A peculiarity of PUMAS is that it is revertible, i.e. it can run in forward or in backward mode. Thus, the PUMAS library is particularly well suited for muography applications. Abstract

Understanding the organization of the hydration layer at functionalized silica surfaces is relevant for a large range of biosensing applications or surface phenomena such as biomolecule adsorption. Silane monolayers are widely used to functionalize silica surfaces. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the role of silane molecule head-group charge, alkyl chain length, and surface coverage in the structural organization and dynamic properties of Na+ ions, Cl- ions, and water molecules at the interface. The silane molecules studied are 3-aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane, n-propyldimethylmethoxysilane, octadecyldimethylmethoxysilane, and (dimethylamino)dimethylsilylundecanoate. Our results suggest that the distribution of interfacial ions is sensitive to the 2D dispersion of the silane-charged head groups. Also, while charged silane monolayers show a strong orientation of interfacial water molecules, which leads to a rupture in the hydrogen bond network and disturbs their tetrahedral organization, the arrangement of water molecules at the interface with uncharged silane monolayers seems to be related to the surface roughness and to alkyl chain length. In line with these results, the diffusion of ions and water molecules is higher at the CH3 long monolayer interface than at the CH3 short monolayer interface and at the charged monolayer interfaces. Also, whatever the silane molecules studied, bulk properties are recovered around 0.7 nm above the interface. The interfacial water organization is known to impact biomolecule adsorption. Therefore, these results could further help in optimizing the functionalization layers to capture analytes.

Abstract

International audience; The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of grade of obesity on the probability of achieving a VO2 plateau and threshold secondary criteria for verifying VO2max during a treadmill walk test in youths with obesity. Therefore, 72 youths with obesity (aged 8-16) performed an incremental treadmill walk test to exhaustion during which oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion were continuously measured. HR corresponding to a “hard” level of perceived exertion was reported and expressed as a percentage of the predicted HRmax. The rate of achievement of criteria for validation VO2max (VO2 plateau; HR>95% theoretical HRmax; RER>1.0; rating of perceived exertion ≥ “hard”) was compared between participants with grade I and grade II obesity. 37% of the participants achieved a VO2 plateau and 23% achieved both an HR>95% and RER >1.0. Youths with grade II obesity had lower minute ventilation (p95% (OR = 0.33; P=0.06) and a “hard” rating of perceived exertion than grade I (OR = 4.5; P=0.07). However, there was no influence of grade of obesity on the achievement of VO2 plateau, and RER>1.0.

Partly or fully renewable (co)polymers are gaining interest in both academia and industry. Polyethylene is a widely used polymer, classically derived from fossil fuels, with a high versatility stemming from the introduction of comonomers altering the mechanical properties. Abstract

All living organisms can make lipid droplets (LDs), intracellular oil-in-water droplets, surrounded by a phospholipid and protein monolayer. LDs are at the nexus of cellular lipid metabolism and function in diverse biological processes. During the past decade, multidisciplinary approaches have shed light on LD assembly steps from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER): nucleation, growth, budding, and formation of a separate organelle. However, the molecular mechanisms underpinning these steps remain elusive. In this review, we focus on the nucleation step, defining where and how LD assembly is initiated. We present how membrane biophysical and physicochemical properties control this step and how proteins act on it to orchestrate LD biogenesis.

Abstract

International audience; Polyazanes (that is, higher nuclearity homologues of hydrazines) with increasing numbers of bound nitrogen atoms (from 3 to 5) were prepared via additions of lower order polyazanes to diazo reagents, including the first pentazane ever described. A structure was obtained. It was shown that the polynitrogen chains adopt a helical conformation. DFT modeling shows that the arrangement subsists in solution. While the polyazanes are all reducing agents, they become less so with the increasing number of nitrogens.

Abstract

The one-body density matrix has recently attracted considerable attention as a promising key quantity for the description of systems out of equilibrium. Its time evolution is given in terms of the two-body density matrix, and thus the central challenge is to find approximations to the latter. An extra layer of difficulty is added when dealing with strong electron correlations. In this work, we explore precisely this regime by looking at the two-site Anderson impurity model as a case study. To address the system's dynamics, we use an adiabatic approximation based on the exact ground-state two-body density matrix. We find that this adiabatic extension does not reproduce the exact results even for a slow switch-on of the external perturbation, and we trace back this behavior to the lack of an accurate imaginary part of the adiabatic approximation to the two-body density matrix. The attempt to restore an approximate imaginary part through a Hilbert transform of the real part works well only for very short times, but quickly deteriorates for longer times, with the one-body density matrix being pushed out of its N-representability domain. Our results thus pose an important constraint on practical prescriptions to perform the time evolution of the one-body density matrix.

Abstract

Opto-acoustophoretic mobility has been demonstrated recently for fluorescent and colored particles acoustically levitated in a stationary ultrasonic field when illuminated with the appropriate optical wavelength [Dumy, Hoyos, and Aider, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 146, 4557-4568 (2019); Zhou, Gao, Yang, Li, Shao, Zhang, Li, and Li, Adv. Sci. 5, 1800122 (2018)]. It is a repeatable phenomenon, needing both acoustic trapping and specific optic excitation to occur. However, the physical origin of the phenomenon is still debated. In this study, we provide more insights into the probable origin of this phenomenon by confronting numerical simulations with temperature controlled experiments. The phenomenon properties are well reproduced by our model, relying on a thermofluidic instability, hinting at the potential thermally induced fluid density gradient as a drag source for the observed ejection of particles. Thermostated experiments exhibit a surprising threshold above which the phenomenon is not observed anymore no matter how large the optic or acoustic energies used. This exciting observation differs from the initial interpretation of the phenomenon, altering its potential application without removing its interest because it suggests the possible contactless generation of customized flows by acoustically trapped particles.

International audience; The new power Gallium Nitride transistors allow to increase the operating frequency of converters to megahertz range, thanks to their low switching time that is of a few nanoseconds or less. This permits to reduce the values and the volume of the passive components, and enhance the power density of power converters. However, inductors needed for energy storage still take a large volume in converters compared with the others components, because of their weak energy density. Furthermore, high-frequency operation require low-losses magnetic materials. In this article, a design method of PCB inductors is proposed. A flexible ferrite sheet is used to enhance the inductance value and ease the realization of custom-shape devices. The design method of the inductor is based on the optimization of the inductor volume taking into account thermal issues of the magnetic sheets. Also a simulation method is proposed to calculate the equivalent stray capacitance of the inductors. The proposed method provides a losses volume tradeoff that helps designers to optimize the inductor for their application.

Abstract

Electron states in semiconductor materials can be modified by quantum confinement. Adding to semiconductor heterostructures the concept of lateral geometry offers the possibility to further tailor the electronic band structure with the creation of unique flat bands. Using block copolymer lithography, we describe the design, fabrication, and characterization of multiorbital bands in a honeycomb In0.53Ga0.47As/InP heterostructure quantum well with a lattice constant of 21 nm. Thanks to an optimized surface quality, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy reveals the existence of a strong resonance localized between the lattice sites, signature of a p-orbital flat band. Together with theoretical computations, the impact of the nanopatterning imperfections on the band structure is examined. We show that the flat band is protected against the lateral and vertical disorder, making this industry-standard system particularly attractive for the study of exotic phases of matter.

Abstract

International audience; During the Maya early Anthropocene (2000 BCE e 1000 CE) in Mesoamerica, socio-environmental in-teractions contributed to the rise and decline of the ancient Maya civilisation. At the scale of the exploitation territories of the Maya cities, the temporal variations of hydrological and sedimentary dynamics in response to anthropogenic and climate drivers are still poorly known. This constrains diachronic analyses of socio-ecosystems and, more particularly, of water and soil resources in the hinterlands. This manuscript analyses and presents a regional comparison of the dynamics of one of the most transformed hydrosystems and morpho-sedimentary systems by the societies of the Southern Maya Lowlands (SMLs), during the second half of the Holocene. It focuses on the lake basin of the polje named El Infierno bajo and its watershed, which was the main water storage area for the Maya city of Naachtun e a large regional capital between 150 and 950 CE e, and which contains many remains of hydraulic and agrarian structures. This integrated palaeolimnological, geoarchaeological and hydrological approach, based on the analyses of morpho sedimentary archives, LiDAR altimetry data and hydrological data, resulted in the construction of hydro-sedimentary baselines (pre- syn- and post-ancient Maya anthropogenic impacts). Currently, the intermittent lake (civale) of this bajo responds to strong seasonal and interannual hydrological variabilities, under climate control. During the past 5500 years, hydro-sedimentary fluctuations were marked by the alternation of seven main hydrological periods (HP),characterised by high and low lake levels (alternately perennial, intermittent and dry lake) and six main erosion and sediment transfer periods (ESTP), marked by strong and low alluvial and colluvial detrital inputs in the lowlands. Anthropogenic and climate forcings have independently or jointly controlled the hydrologic and sedimentary budgets of the lake basin. Lithofacies, depositional processes, accumulation rates and drivers of the anthropogenic detrital inputs – the so-called “Maya clays” –, are analysed and quantified from ∼1500 BCE to ∼1150 CE. It thus reveals one of the longest periods of occupation and exploitation of natural resources of the SMLs, for over 2500 years during the Preclassic, Classic and Post-classic Maya periods. The hydro-sedimentary dynamics in the bajos of the SMLs Elevated Interior Region (EIR), such as El Infierno, enabled the long-term exploitation of water and soil resources for agrarian purposes, thanks to the construction of hydraulic and agrarian palimpsest landscapes shaped by the socio-ecosystems.

Abstract

Nanopores combined with optical approaches can be used to detect viral particles. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of hydrodynamical driving and optical sensing to identify and quantify viral particles in a biological sample. We have developed a simple and rapid method which requires only fluorescent labeling of the particles and can therefore be applied to a wide range of virus type. The system operates in real time and at the single particle level while providing a low error on concentration (4%) and a low limit of detection of 10

Abstract

Cosmological and astrophysical observations suggest that 85% of the total matter of the Universe is made of Dark Matter (DM). However, its nature remains one of the most challenging and fundamental open questions of particle physics. Assuming particle DM, this exotic form of matter cannot consist of Standard Model (SM) particles. Many models have been developed to attempt unraveling the nature of DM such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), the most favored particle candidates. WIMP annihilations and decay could produce SM particles which in turn hadronize and decay to give SM secondaries such as high energy γ rays. In the framework of indirect DM search, observations of promising targets are used to search for signatures of DM annihilation. Among these, the dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are commonly favored owing to their expected high DM content and negligible astrophysical background. In this work, we present the very first combination of 20 dSph observations, performed by the Fermi-LAT, HAWC, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS collaborations in order to maximize the sensitivity of DM searches and improve the current results. We use a joint maximum likelihood approach combining each experiment’s individual analysis to derive more constraining upper limits on the WIMP DM self-annihilation cross-section as a function of DM particle mass. Abstract

The first objective of this study was to develop chitosan (CH)-carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film forming dispersions (FFDs) containing oleic acid for the encapsulation of a hydrophobic active curcumin derivative (tetrahydrocurcumin-THC). The second objective examined the impact of oleic acid on the release of THC and the associated antioxidant and antimicrobial action of CH-CMC-THC films. Oleic acid had a strong negative impact on THC release potentially due to the stability of the THC encapsulation in the oleic acid droplet, as suggested by ATR-FTIR and SEM analyses. The in vitro antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea, indicated significant antifungal activity of THC and CH-CMC FFD with or without oleic acid. In contrast, in vivo experiments consisting of the CH-CMC-THC FFD coating of blackberries had no effect on the microbial charge irrespective of the oleic acid presence. In addition, the visual appearance of the CH-CMC-THC FFDs coated-blackberries seemed better in the absence of oleic acid.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a numerical study of emulsion latex coagulation processes in continuous coagulators based on the full computational fluid dynamics approach. The RANS approach together with the k-ε turbulence model was used to describe the detailed flow field in the coagulators. The coagulant mixing process was modelled by the convection-diffusion equation and the emulsion latex coagulation process was formulated by the population balance equation of the particle size with a coagulation kernel including a perikinetic and orthokinetic combined mechanism. The flow and coagulation models were independently validated by means of comparing simulated results to the relevant experimental data from the literature. A series of simulations were carried out to study the effects of coagulator bottom shape, salt solution feeding location, residence time and agitation speed, as well as the influence of four typical scale-up criteria on the latex particle coagulation process. The presented results would be helpful for the relevant process design, development and scale-up of continuous latex coagulators.

Abstract

Although endurance running (ER) seems to be a simple repetitive exercise, good ER performance also requires and relies on multiple cognitive and motor control processes. Most of previous neuroimaging studies on ER were conducted using a single MRI modality, yet no multimodal study to our knowledge has been performed in this regard. In this study, we used multimodal MRI data to investigate the brain structural and functional differences between endurance runners (n = 22; age = 26.27 ± 6.07 years; endurance training = 6.23 ± 2.41 years) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 20; age = 24.60 ± 4.14 years). Compared with the HCs, the endurance runners showed greater gray matter volume (GMV) and cortical surface area in the left precentral gyrus, which at the same time had higher functional connectivity (FC) with the right postcentral and precentral gyrus. Subcortically, the endurance runners showed greater GMV in the left hippocampus and regional inflation in the right hippocampus. Using the bilateral hippocampi as seeds, further seed-based FC analyses showed higher hippocampal FC with the supplementary motor area, middle cingulate cortex, and left posterior lobe of the cerebellum. Moreover, compared with the HCs, the endurance runners also showed higher fractional anisotropy in several white matter regions, involving the corpus callosum, left internal capsule, left corona radiata, left external capsule, left posterior lobe of cerebellum and bilateral precuneus. Taken together, our findings provide several lines of evidence for the brain structural and functional differences between endurance runners and HCs. The current data suggest that these brain characteristics may have arisen as a result of regular ER training; however, whether they represent the neural correlates underlying the good ER performances of the endurance runners requires further investigations.

Abstract

Random Constraint Satisfaction Problems exhibit several phase transitions when their density of constraints is varied. One of these threshold phenomena, known as the clustering or dynamic transition, corresponds to a transition for an information theoretic problem called tree reconstruction. In this article we study this threshold for two CSPs, namely the bicoloring of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a density $\alpha$ of constraints, and the $q$-coloring of random graphs with average degree $c$. We show that in the large $k,q$ limit the clustering transition occurs for $\alpha = \frac{2^{k-1}}{k} (\ln k + \ln \ln k + \gamma_{\rm d} + o(1))$, $c= q (\ln q + \ln \ln q + \gamma_{\rm d}+ o(1))$, where $\gamma_{\rm d}$ is the same constant for both models. We characterize $\gamma_{\rm d}$ via a functional equation, solve the latter numerically to estimate $\gamma_{\rm d} \approx 0.871$, and obtain an analytic lowerbound $\gamma_{\rm d} \ge 1 + \ln (2 (\sqrt{2}-1)) \approx 0.812$. Our analysis unveils a subtle interplay of the clustering transition with the rigidity (naive reconstruction) threshold that occurs on the same asymptotic scale at $\gamma_{\rm r}=1$., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The interaction of molecules with surfaces plays a crucial role in the electronic and chemical properties of supported molecules and needs a comprehensive description of interfacial effects. Here, we unveil the effect of the substrate on the electronic configuration of iron porphyrin molecules on Au(111) and graphene, and we provide a physical picture of the molecule-surface interaction. We show that the frontier orbitals derive from different electronic states depending on the substrate. The origin of this difference comes from molecule-substrate orbital selective coupling caused by reduced symmetry and interaction with the substrate. The weak interaction on graphene keeps a ground state configuration close to the gas phase, while the stronger interaction on gold stabilizes another electronic solution. Our findings reveal the origin of the energy redistribution of molecular states for noncovalently bonded molecules on surfaces.
