This article explores the urban dynamics of the small steel towns making up the Val-de-Fensch Community and its suburbs. While re-defining the circumstances which develop the factory or dormitory town mechanisms, it highlights the difficulties smaller towns experience to maturate, especially when facing industrial and urban crisis contraction. While retaining and asserting its particular identity, this conurbation then has to regenerate its degraded urban fabric as well as restructure its industrial areas. Being located on the outskirts of Thionville and its suburbs, near the small global town of Luxembourg, makes it part of an ever increasing cross-border urban area
