Introduction: SB3 is a trastuzumab biosimilar approved in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, and the USA. This real-world study evaluated safety and effectiveness of SB3 as part of the Korean post approval safety management system. Methods: This post-marketing surveillance in Korea included patients in line with approved indications, i.e., patients with early or metastatic breast cancer or metastatic gastric cancer. Safety outcomes were adverse events (AEs) and adverse drug reactions. Effectiveness outcomes were tumor response and event-free survival. Results: 424 patients were evaluated: 366 patients (86%) with early breast cancer, 53 patients (13%) with metastatic breast cancer, and 5 patients (1%) with metastatic gastric cancer. Among patients with breast cancer, AEs (mostly mild) and adverse drug reactions were reported by 158 (37.7%) and 57 (13.6%) patients, respectively. Most patients with an AE (141, 89.2%) had no change in treatment schedule. Treatment was temporarily suspended in 14 (8.9%) patients with an AE and completely discontinued in 7 (4.4%). Among patients with early and metastatic breast cancer who were evaluated for efficacy, objective response rates were 82.7% and 38.3%, respectively. Pathological complete response was 64.6% in patients with early breast cancer. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-care intervention using a mobile instant messenger on hemodialysis patient`s knowledge, self-efficacy, self-care behavior and physiological indices. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants consisted of 38 patients who had a regular hemodialysis of Seoul National University Hospital. They were assigned to one of two groups; an experimental group (n = 19) that had self-care intervention for 8 weeks and a control groups (n = 19) that had routine hemodialysis treatment. The data collection was conducted from September 5, 2022 to October 29, 2022. The date were analyzed by Chi-square test, Independent t-test, and Fisher`s exact test using SPSS Win 29 program. Results: There was a significant difference in self-efficacy (t = 3.42, p = .002) between experimental and control groups. There was no significant differences between the two groups in knowledge (t = 0.80, p = .428), self-care behavior (t = 0.09, p = .929), potassium (t = -0.82 p = .416), phosphorus (t = -0.03, p = .974), weight gain (t = 0.16, p = .867). Conclusion: Based on above results, it was verified that self-care intervention in this study was an effective indicator in improving the self-efficacy. Objective We investigated the incidence of and risk factors for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in patients with rheumatologic disease. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who were diagnosed with rheumatologic diseases at a tertiary care hospital between May 2009 and July 2022 and identified the patients who were subsequently diagnosed with MDS. Each patient with MDS was matched with five age- and sex-matched controls chosen from the cohort of patients with each specific rheumatologic disease. Results During a total follow-up of 55 841 person-years (PY), MDS occurred in 64 patients, yielding an incidence rate of 1.15/1000 PY {median age 57.0 years [interquartile range (IQR) 41.0–69.0], median duration to MDS diagnosis 6.5 years (IQR 3.0–9.0)]. In an age-matched analysis, SLE was a significant risk factor for MDS [adjusted hazard ratio 2.61 (CI 1.19, 36.06), P  = 0.01]. Refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia was the most common phenotype of MDS (35.9%), and more than half of the patients had karyotypes with a favourable prognosis (54.7%). Compared with matched controls, RA, SLE and AS patients with MDS had lower levels of haemoglobin at the time of diagnosis of rheumatologic disease. Furthermore, the MDS patients with SLE and Behçet's disease had higher levels of glucocorticoid use in terms of frequency of use and mean dose than control patients. Conclusion SLE is a significant risk factor for MDS among patients with rheumatologic diseases. Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of a media literacy‐based smoking prevention program based on Ajzen's theory of planned behavior in female adolescents. Methods: This quasi‐experimental study was conducted with female high school students aged 16–17 years in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The program provided eight sessions over 4 weeks. Quantitative data were collected before and after online surveys in an intervention (n = 21) and control (n = 21) groups, and analyzed using mixed analysis of variance. Qualitative data on participation experiences was collected by requesting the participants to answer open‐ended questions once a week during the intervention and performing co‐occurrence analysis of specific terms in the responses was conducted through text mining. Results: Although the program decreased smoking intention and increased smoking media literacy in the intervention group, there were no significant differences between the groups. Qualitative results obtained from the intervention group showed cognitive and behavioral changes in the perception of the harmfulness of e‐cigarettes in the media and the expression of a willingness to overcome the temptation to smoke. Conclusions: Our findings show that the enhancement of smoking media literacy, specifically by correcting misconceptions regarding e‐cigarettes promoted by the new media, contributes smoking prevention in female adolescents. Background: Even though arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is recognized as a standard treatment option, the risk of postoperative retear is a major concern. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. Methods: A total of 64 patients with rotator cuff tears diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled prospectively from November 2020 to December 2021. Both groups had repairs using the suture bridge technique. For the atelocollagen group, before securing the lateral anchors, we inserted porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen between the footprint and the tendon. On postoperative day 2, the patients underwent MRI to confirm containment of the patch-type atelocollagen. At 6 months and 1 year postoperatively, the signal intensity of the repaired tendon was assessed using MRI. Patients were evaluated using the Constant score as the primary outcome, along with the visual analog scale for pain; range of motion; American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score; University of California, Los Angeles, score; and Korean Shoulder Score preoperatively and at 2, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Results: No significant changes in the Constant score as primary outcome, pain or other functional scores, and range of motion were observed between the groups at 1 year postoperatively. The patch-type atelocollagen was confirmed to be contained by the time-zero MRI scan taken 2 days postoperatively. Among the 55 patients included in final analysis, 12 retear cases were recorded (21.8% retear rate). A significantly lower retear rate was found in the atelocollagen group, as 3 cases were observed in this group (10.3%) and 9 cases were observed in the conventional repair group (34.6%) (P =.048). Conclusion: The Constant score was not different between the groups. The retear rate after rotator cuff repair was significantly lower in the group that received porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen compared with in the conventional group. Background: Virtual simulation-based education for healthcare professionals has emerged as a strategy for dealing with infectious disease disasters, particularly when training at clinical sites is restricted due to the risk of infection and a lack of personal protective equipment. This research evaluated a virtual simulation-based education program intended to increase nurses' perceived competence in providing psychological support to patients affected by infectious disease disasters. Methods: The efficacy of the program was evaluated via a randomized controlled trial. We recruited 104 nurses for participation in the study and allocated them randomly and evenly to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was given a web address through which they could access the program, whereas the control group was provided with a web address that directed them to text-based education materials. Data were then collected through an online survey of competence in addressing disaster mental health, after which the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(version 23.0). Results: The analysis showed that the experimental group's disaster mental health competence (F = 5.149, p =.026), problem solving process (t = 3.024, p =.003), self-leadership (t = 2.063, p =.042), learning self-efficacy (t = 3.450, p =.001), and transfer motivation (t = 2.095, p =.039) significantly statistically differed from those of the control group. Conclusions: A virtual nursing simulation-based education program for psychological support can overcome limitations of time and space. The program would also be an effective learning resource during infectious disease outbreaks. Objective: This study aimed to demonstrate the incidence of altered level of consciousness after hemorrhagic stroke and identify factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke. Design: This study used data from a prospectivemulticenter cohort study conducted in nine hospitals in Korea and included 1677 patients with first-ever hemorrhagic stroke. Patients were dichotomized into those with and without altered level of consciousness at 3mos after stroke. Multivariate logistic regression analysiswas performed to identify factors associated with subacute to chronic stage altered level of consciousness. Results:Among patientswith hemorrhagic stroke (age: 20-99 yrs, female 50.21%), the prevalence of altered level of consciousness at admission was 38.58% (25.4% [drowsy], 6.38% [stupor], and 6.8% [coma]) and 17.29% 3 mos after stroke. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that independent factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke included late seizure (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 5.93 [1.78-20.00]), stroke progression (3.84 [1.48-9.64]), craniectomy (2.19 [1.19-4.00]), history of complications (1.74 [1.18-2.55]), age at stroke onset (1.08 [1.07-1.10]), and initial Glasgow Coma Scale score category (0.36 [0.30-0.44]). Conclusions: The factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke should be considered when explaining long-term consciousness status and focused management of modifiable factors in acute care hospitals could help ameliorate altered level of consciousness and promote recovery after stroke. Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is the standard treatment for early malignant stomach lesions. However, this procedure is technically demanding and carries a high complication risk. The level of difficulty in performing ESD is influenced by the location of the lesion. In our study, we aimed to investigate and analyze the effectiveness of robot-assisted ESD for lesions situated in challenging locations within the stomach. Methods: We developed a gastric simulator that could be used to implement various gastric ESD locations. An EndoGel (Sunarrow, Tokyo, Japan) was attached to the simulator for the dissection procedures. Robot-assisted or conventional ESD was performed at challenging or easy locations by two ESD-trainee endoscopists. Results: The procedure time was remarkably shorter for robotic ESD than conventional dissection at challenging locations (6.2 vs. 10.2 min, P < 0.05), mainly due to faster dissection (220.3 vs. 101.9 mm2/min, P < 0.05). The blind dissection rate was significantly lower with robotic ESD than with the conventional method (17.6 vs. 35.2%, P < 0.05) at challenging locations. Conclusion: The procedure time was significantly shortened when robot-assisted gastric ESD procedures were performed at challenging locations. Therefore, our robotic device provides simple, effective, and safe multidirectional traction for endoscopic submucosal dissection at challenging locations, thereby reducing difficulty of the procedure. Background: The significant rise in cardiac arrest cases within hospitals, coupled with a low survival rate, poses a critical health issue. And in most situations, nurses are the first responders. To develop nursing students' competencies in advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, systematic and repetitive learner-centered self-directed education that can promote the integration of knowledge and practice is necessary. Objectives: To develop an advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation training program using a web-based serious game for nursing students and verifying its efficacy. Design: The program was developed based on the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, and the Input Process Outcome Model of Serious Game Design formed the theoretical basis. Settings and participants: The research design employed a before-and-after non-equivalent control group, and data collection took place among 2nd and 3rd year nursing students at K University in D City, Korea, from March 2, 2023, to March 24, 2023. Methods: The program consisted of a 120-min video lecture, 30 min of a web-based serious game, 30-min of written self-reported debriefing, and individual feedback using a video conference system. The effectiveness of the program was measured for both groups using an 89-item structured questionnaire regarding knowledge, confidence in performance, problem-solving ability, and learning transfer expectations. Results: The program was effective in improving nursing students' advanced cardiopulmonary knowledge, confidence in performance, problem-solving ability, and learning transfer expectation immediately after intervention. Conclusions: This program underscores the necessity of a new direction in nursing education, emphasizing learner-centered approaches, rather than the traditional focus on the mere transmission of basic knowledge and skills, to cultivate nurses with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation capabilities. Purpose: This study investigated palliative care physicians’ attitudes regarding social issues related to opioid use. Methods: An email survey was sent to 674 physicians who were members of the Korean Society for Hospice and Palliative Care (KSHPC). Results: Data from 66 physicians were analyzed (response rate, 9.8%). About 70% of participants stated that their prescribing patterns were not influenced by social issues related to opioid use, and 90% of participants thought that additional regulations should be limited to non-cancer pain. Under the current circumstances, pain education for physicians is urgently needed, as well as increased awareness among the public. Half of the respondents identified the KSHPC as the primary organization responsible for providing pain education. Conclusion: Palliative care physicians’ prescribing patterns were not influenced by social issues related to opioid use, and these issues also should not affect cancer pain control. Background: The extent of postoperative pain following transoral thyroidectomy is not well-understood and remains a subject of debate. This study aims to analyze and compare postoperative pain levels between patients undergoing transoral and conventional transcervical thyroidectomy. Methods: A prospective evaluation on postoperative pain was conducted in 310 patients undergoing conventional thyroidectomy and 194 undergoing transoral thyroidectomy. Pain levels were evaluated using the numerical rating scale (NRS, ranging from 0 to 10) through preoperative and postoperative questionnaires at specified time points: 1, 3, and 6 days, and 1 and 3 months following surgery. Propensity score-matched analysis was carried out based on six covariates: sex, age, body mass index, extent of thyroidectomy, tumor size, and central neck dissection. Results: After propensity score matching based on the six covariates, 121 patient pairs were identified from each group. Within this matched cohort, postoperative pain scores significantly worsened 1 day after surgery but showed progressive recovery up to 3 months post-surgery in both groups. The transoral group exhibited higher postoperative pain scores than the conventional group from day 1 (4.43 ± 2.6 vs. 3.11 ± 2.5, p < 0.001) to day 6 (1.76 ± 1.9 vs. 1.13 ± 1.6, p = 0.016) post-surgery, with no significant difference noted at 1 month. Among transoral procedures, pain scores were significantly higher for the endoscopic approach compared to the robotic approach on days 1 (5.52 ± 2.3 vs. 4.29 ± 2.3, p = 0.028) and 3 (3.52 ± 2.5 vs. 2.64 ± 2.0, p = 0.047) post-surgery. Conclusions: Postoperative pain was significantly higher in transoral thyroidectomy compared to conventional thyroidectomy up to 6 days post-surgery. This quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group study developed an eight-session post-traumatic growth program for teachers who had experienced violence from students and/or parents and examined its effects on rumination, burnout, and post-traumatic growth. A convenience sample was recruited from 11 elementary schools in Jeonbuk province, South Korea. The experimental group (n = 27) participated in bi-weekly sessions over four weeks, whereas the control group (n = 27) read educational materials on post-traumatic growth during the same period. The experimental group exhibited significantly greater decreases in intrusive rumination and higher post-traumatic growth than the control group. Background: Disaster nursing deploys professional nursing knowledge and skills systematically to reduce disaster-related risks to life and health. Disaster nursing education requires providing simulations using standardized patients. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop, based on the International Council of Nurses' Framework of Disaster Nursing Competencies, a simulation-based disaster nursing education program for nursing students that employed standardized patients. Methods: A nonequivalent, control group, pretest-and-posttest design was used. Participants were senior nursing students from two universities, with 70 assigned to the experimental group, 35 assigned to the comparison group, and 35 assigned to the control group. Data were collected from January 25 to April 3, 2019. The simulation-based disaster nursing education program consisted of a 60-minute theoretical lecture on disaster management and two scenarios. The effectiveness of the simulation-based disaster nursing education program was measured using levels of disaster nursing competencies, disaster triage competency, disaster preparedness, critical thinking disposition, and confidence in disaster nursing. Results: Significant differences were found between the experimental and comparison/control groups in terms of disaster nursing competencies (F = 20.06, p < .001), nursing triage (F = 17.35, p < .001), disaster preparedness (F = 60.37, p < .001), critical thinking disposition (F = 19.63, p < .001), and confidence in disaster nursing (F = 20.24, p < .001). Conclusions: Simulation-based disaster nursing education programs using standardized patients can be useful in disaster nursing education. Aims: The study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of a self‐determination theory‐based, nurse‐led, physical activity programme for postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: Between December 2019 and April 2020, this randomized controlled trial recruited 62 postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis from a university‐affiliated hospital in South Korea. The intervention group participated in a self‐determination theory‐based, nurse‐led, physical activity programme that consisted of Tai Chi‐based physical activity, a supportive psychosocial strategy, and interactive counselling for 16 weeks, and the control group continued to undergo their usual care. Results: There were statistically significant group‐by‐time interactions in physical activity and perceived sarcopenia, which favoured the intervention group. Additionally, the intervention group showed significant improvements in the perceived therapeutic efficacy of physical activity, grip strength, walking speed, disease activity score, and health‐related quality of life. Conclusions: The programme developed in this study can be an effective and feasible approach for postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis in improving physical activity, selected osteosarcopenic outcomes, and health‐related quality of life. Further research is required to investigate the long‐term effects of this theory‐based programme for postmenopausal women in diverse settings. Background: Several studies have investigated the effect of antiemetics on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in high-risk groups. However, few studies have investigated the effect of antiemetics in patients at low risk of developing PONV. Methods: In this prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial, 177 patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia were randomly allocated to three groups. Patients allocated to group C (control group) received 2 mL of intravenous 0.9% saline, those allocated to group R (ramosetron group) received 0.3 mg of intravenous ramosetron, and those allocated to group DR (ramosetron plus dexamethasone group) received 5 mg of intravenous dexamethasone and 0.3 mg of intravenous ramosetron. Results: Finally, 174 patients completed the study, and the types of surgeries were orthopedic (n = 80), rhinologic (n = 47), urologic (n = 29), and others (n = 18). The incidence of PONV up to 48 h postoperatively was significantly lower in group DR than in group C. The incidence of PONV up to 0–1 h postoperatively was significantly lower in groups R and DR than in group C. The usage pattern of rescue antiemetics was consistent with the incidence of PONV. The percentage of patients requiring rescue analgesics 0–1 h postoperatively was significantly lower in groups R and DR than in group C. Conclusions: The combination of dexamethasone and ramosetron demonstrated a superior effect in preventing PONV for 48 h after surgery under general anesthesia than saline in patients at low risk of developing PONV. Compared with saline injections, ramosetron injections yielded better outcomes for the incidence of PONV and the use of rescue antiemetics and rescue analgesics 0–1 h postoperatively. BACKGROUND: Adolescents are considered to be vulnerable to particulate matter (PM). This study aims to develop and verify the effectiveness of the "school‐based education program for coping with particulate matter (SEPC_PM)." This program was designed by employing the health belief model. METHODS: High school students between the ages of 15 and 18 in South Korea participated in the program. This study employed a nonequivalent control group pretest‐posttest design. A total of 113 students participated in the study; of these, 56 students participated in the intervention group, and 57 in the control group. The intervention group received 8 intervention sessions the SEPC_PM over the course of 4 weeks. RESULTS: After the completion of the program, the intervention group's knowledge about PM showed a statistically significant increase (t = 4.79, p <.001). The practice of engaging in health‐managing behaviors to protect against PM also showed statistically significant improvement in the intervention group, with the greatest progress in practicing precaution when outdoors (t = 2.22, p =.029). No statistically significant changes were observed regarding other dependent variables. However, a subdomain of the variable of perceived self‐efficacy for engaging in health‐managing behaviors to protect against PM (degree of body cleansing after returning home) demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the intervention group (t = 1.99, p =.049). CONCLUSIONS: The SEPC_PM may be proposed for incorporation into regular high school curricula to improve students' health by encouraging them to take necessary actions against PM. To develop and identify the effectiveness of a hospital-to-home transitional intervention based on an interaction model of client health behavior in adult patients with stroke. A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest. Thirty-eight patients participated (18=intervention, 20=control); the intervention group received 12 weeks of the intervention. The intervention influenced anxiety, disease severity, health behavior adherence, patient satisfaction, and quality of life in adult patients with stroke. Transitional programs have potential to improve the health behaviors of subjects, and community health nurses can assist in the implementation of these programs. Health behaviors and quality of life scores were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group; these findings support the need for continuity of nursing care during the transitional period for patients with stroke. Background: Nurses' competency in delirium care is important because delirium can extend hospitalization and increase patient mortality. Aim: This study aimed at identifying and comparing the perceived knowledge, barriers, importance, performance, and training priorities between the intensive care unit (ICU) and ward nurses working in delirium care. Study design: This cross‐sectional descriptive study included 71 ICU nurses and 149 ward nurses at one university hospital. Nurses' self‐reported knowledge, barriers, importance, and performance of delirium care were surveyed. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi‐squared test or Fisher's exact test, Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests, Mann‐Whitney U tests, and the importance‐performance analysis matrix. Results: Compared to ward nurses, ICU nurses reported lower overall knowledge level (57.1% vs 60.7%, z = −2.005, P =.045) but higher overall gap between the importance and performance of delirium care (0.5 vs 0.2, z = −4.008, P <.001). The level of overall barriers to delirium care was similar between the two groups (3.8 vs 3.8, z = −1.190, P =.234). The highest training priority, showing high importance but low performance in the importance‐performance matrix, was "family involvement and education" for ICU nurses and "non‐pharmacological management" for ward nurses. Conclusions: The highest training priority for delirium care was different between ICU and ward nurses. To enhance the delirium care competency of hospital nurses, the nurse educator should develop training programs that target knowledge deficits, perceived barriers, and training priorities. Relevance to clinical practice: Acute cognitive disturbances are common in patients hospitalized in wards and ICUs and can lead to adverse patient outcomes if not properly assessed and managed. Nurse educators need to develop and implement a training program based on the needs assessment and priorities identified in this study so that ICU and ward nurses can obtain the optimal level of delirium care competency. Simple Summary: In clinical settings, patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have different treatment criteria than those enrolled in clinical trials. There are concerns regarding the efficacy of ICIs in older adults due to age-associated decline in the immune system, and no study has directly compared the efficacy of different ICIs for the elderly in a real-world setting. We aimed to analyze ICIs' use and treatment outcomes in Korean veterans with stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Three cohort groups were derived based on the ICI type (pembrolizumab, nivolumab, and atezolizumab treatment groups), and their clinical characteristics and survival outcomes were compared. There was no difference in the overall survival (OS) rate among the groups, no treatment-specific OS benefit was observed relative to the tumor PD-L1 expression, and bone metastasis was a poor prognostic factor for OS. Our study demonstrates that all three agents may be appropriate treatment options for elderly patients. Purpose: To provide a comprehensive analysis of ICI usage and treatment outcomes in elderly Korean veterans with stage IV NSCLC. Methods: Patients diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC between 2016 and 2021 were included, and three cohorts were derived according to the type of ICI received. Thereafter, the clinical characteristics and survival outcomes were compared. Results: Of the 180 patients with NSCLC (median age, 76 years) included in this study, 49 (27.7%), 61 (33.9%), and 70 (38.9%) received pembrolizumab, nivolumab, and atezolizumab, respectively, and 19.4%, 36.1%, and 34.4% had PD-L1 expressions < 1%, 1–49%, and ≥50%, respectively. The pembrolizumab, nivolumab, and atezolizumab groups, the objective response rates (ORR), and the disease control rates (DCR) were 22.4%, 8.2%, and 4.3% (p = 0.004), and 59.2, 55.7%, and 30.0% (p = 0.001), respectively. However, no difference in the overall survival (OS) rate was noted among the groups (12.6 months vs. 8.4 months vs. 7.7 months, p = 0.334). Similarly, there was no treatment specific OS benefit with respect to the tumor PD-L1 expression status. Interestingly, multivariate analysis identified bone metastasis as a significant poor prognostic factor for OS (HR = 2.75 [95% CI, 1.31–5.76], p = 0.007). Conclusion: Pembrolizumab and nivolumab showed stronger associations with increases in ORR and DCR than atezolizumab, but no statistically significant differences were observed with respect to OS. This study aimed to translate the Lymphedema Quality of Life Questionnaire-leg into Korean (K-LYMQOL-leg) and test its reliability and validity. The LYMQOL-leg was translated forward and backward from English to Korean. Fifty-five patients with lower limb lymphedema completed the K-LYMQOL-leg and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC-QLQ-C30) at the first visit, and the K-LYMQOL-leg was re-administered within a week. Reliability was tested by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Cronbach's alpha for each domain. Face validity was evaluated, and concurrent validity was verified by comparing the K-LYMQOL-leg domain scores with the corresponding EORTC-QLQ-C30 and limb volume scales. The known-group construct validity was then assessed. Excellent reliability was confirmed by internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient, 0.851–0.878) and test-retest reliability (ICC, 0.901–0.936) in the four domains. A significant correlation was confirmed in the appearance domain with limb volume (r = 0.424) and in the other domains [function, symptom, and mood], with the EORTC-QLQ-C30 scales (r = −0.779, 0.712, and −0.783). Known-group validity was confirmed in all four domains. The K-LYMQOL-leg verified in this study can be used in clinical practice to evaluate the Quality of Life (QOL) of patients with lymphedema or in research as an outcome. Among cancer treatment-related complications, lymphedema of the lower extremities severely and persistently reduces the health-related quality of life of cancer survivors. Background: Recent biomechanical studies have reported that stress on the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) graft increases as the posterior tibial slope (PTS) decreases (flattened) in knees with single-bundle (SB) and double-bundle PCL reconstruction. Clinical studies of SB PCL reconstruction have shown that a flattened PTS is associated with a lesser reduction in posterior tibial translation. There is no long-term study on the clinical outcomes and graft survival rates of SB PCL reconstruction based on the medial and lateral PTSs measured on magnetic resonance imaging. Hypothesis: Flattened medial and lateral PTSs are associated with poor clinical outcomes and graft survival rates at a minimum 10-year follow-up after SB PCL reconstruction. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: In this cohort study, we retrospectively reviewed 46 patients (mean age, 28.8 ± 9.9 years) who underwent primary SB PCL reconstruction between 2000 and 2009. They were followed up for a minimum of 10 years. The medial and lateral PTSs were measured on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging. As a previous study reported that a steeper medial or lateral PTS showed a higher risk of anterior tibial translation at thresholds of 5.6° and 3.8°, respectively, the patients were divided into 2 groups based on the cutoff values of both the medial (≤5.6° vs >5.6°) and lateral (≤3.8° vs >3.8°) PTSs. Clinical scores (International Knee Documentation Committee subjective score, Lysholm score, and Tegner activity score), radiological outcomes (side-to-side difference [SSD] on stress radiography and osteoarthritis progression), and graft survival rates were compared between the groups at the last follow-up. Results: All clinical scores and the progression of osteoarthritis demonstrated no significant difference between the 2 subgroups of both the medial and lateral PTS groups. The mean SSD on stress radiography after SB PCL reconstruction was significantly greater in patients with a medial PTS ≤5.6° than in patients with a medial PTS >5.6° (8.4 ± 3.9 vs 5.1 ± 2.9 mm, respectively; P =.030), while the lateral PTS subgroups after SB PCL reconstruction demonstrated no significant difference. The minimum 10-year graft survival rate was significantly lower in patients with a medial PTS ≤5.6° (68.4% vs 92.6%, respectively; P =.029) and a lateral PTS ≤3.8° (50.0% vs 91.7%, respectively; P =.001). Conclusion: A flattened medial PTS (≤5.6°) was associated with an increased SSD on stress radiography, and both flattened medial (≤5.6°) and lateral (≤3.8°) PTSs resulted in lower graft survival rates at a minimum 10-year follow-up after primary SB PCL reconstruction. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze end-of-life care practices in lung disease patients with physician orders for life-sustaining treatment (POLSTs). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from medical records regarding the end-of-life care practices of POLST decisions for patients with lung disease hospitalized at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, South Korea. Data were collected from January 1 to June 30, 2021. Results: Of 300 total patients, 198 had lung cancer (66.0%) and 102 had non-malignant lung diseases (34.0%). A POLST was written for 187 patients (62.3%), and an advance directive was written for 20 patients (6.7%). Subsequent treatments were hemodialysis in 13 patients (4.3%), surgery in 3 patients (1.0%), and cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation in 1 patient (0.3%). Among cancer patients, chemotherapy was performed in 11 patients (3.7%), targeted therapy in 11 patients (3.7%), immunotherapy in 6 patients (2.0%), and radiation therapy in 13 patients (4.3%). Depending on the type of lung disease, types of treatment differed, including hemodialysis, ventilators, bilevel positive airway pressure, high-flow nasal cannulas, nebulizers, enteral nutrition, central line, inotropic agents, and opioids. Conclusion: Although the goals of hospice care are the same whether a patient has lung cancer or a nonmalignant lung disease, because the characteristics of the respective diseases differ, end-oflife care practices and hospice approaches must be considered differently. Purpose: This study aimed to identify distinct trajectories of self‐care behaviors over 6 months after hospital discharge in patients with heart failure, including the baseline predictors affecting these trajectories. Design This was a prospective longitudinal observational cohort study with a 6‐month follow‐up. Methods: A total of 158 patients with heart failure (mean age = 66.75 years, 62.7% men) were included in this study. Patients' characteristics, including cognitive function, health literacy, and social support were collected as possible baseline predictors of self‐care behavior trajectories using a structured questionnaire and an electronic medical record review. Self‐care behaviors were evaluated using the Korean version of the nine‐item European Heart Failure Self‐care Behavior Scale at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months after hospital discharge. Latent growth model analysis was conducted to identify the homogeneous subgroups with distinct trajectories of self‐care behaviors. Subsequently, multinomial logistic regression was used to assess whether baseline predictors were associated with these trajectories in patients with heart failure. Results: Three distinct self‐care behavior trajectory groups were identified: "low‐decreased" (n = 33, 20.9%), "middle‐increased" (n = 93, 58.9%), and "high‐sustained" (n = 32, 20.2%). The multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that baseline adequate health literacy and positive social support significantly predicted patients' belonging to both the middle‐increased and high‐sustained self‐care behavior trajectory groups compared to the low‐decreased group. Importantly, better cognitive function at baseline was only significantly associated with the high‐sustained self‐care behavior trajectory compared to the low‐decreased trajectory. Conclusion: Our study revealed that only one‐fifth of the patients belonged to the high‐sustained self‐care behavior group 6 months after hospital discharge. Strategies aimed at improving cognitive function, health literacy, and social support should be developed to sustain satisfactory self‐care behaviors in patients with heart failure. Further studies with long‐term follow‐ups are required to identify other possible factors, as well as the baseline predictors of this study affecting longitudinal trajectories of self‐care behaviors. This cross-sectional study aims to identify high-risk symptom cluster groups for assessing the quality of nursing work life (QNWL) and turnover intention among Korean nurses who have experienced workplace violence. Nurses were recruited for an online survey in May 2021 (n = 203). The following four symptom clusters are extracted: (a) depression–anxiety, (b) shame–somatization, (c) nightmare–loss of appetite, and (d) anger–shock. Three symptom cluster groups were identified. Group 1 had the highest score for the anger–shock symptom cluster, as well as the highest symptom scores and turnover intention. Group 2 had the highest score for the nightmare–loss of appetite symptom cluster and the lowest QNWL. Group 3 had a similar symptom cluster pattern to Group 1 but lower scores for all symptom clusters. Background: Although the optimal use of prescribed medications for stroke survivors is critical for preventing secondary stroke, longitudinal observations of the natural course of medication persistence and adherence in Korean stroke survivors are rare. Furthermore, studies are needed to identify strong predictors influencing medication adherence and to determine whether these predictors change over time. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the longitudinal medication persistence and adherence at 3 months and 1 year after discharge in all stroke patients and to identify predictors of long‐term medication adherence in patients who can self‐medicate. Design: A multicentre, prospective, longitudinal descriptive study. Methods: A total of 600 consecutive ischaemic stroke patients were recruited from three stroke centres across Korea, from 1 September, 2017 to 28 February, 2019. Various factors related to medication adherence suggested by the World Health Organisation were investigated through face‐to‐face interviews at each centre during hospitalisation. Medication persistence and adherence were assessed at 3 months and 1 year after discharge using the eight‐item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale through telephone interviews. Results: Of 537 survivors at 3 months, 526 (98.0%) were persistent and 472 (89.7%) were adherent. Of 493 survivors at 1 year, 477 (96.8%) were persistent and 392 (82.2%) were adherent. Medication belief, income and health literacy were statistically significant predictors of three‐month medication adherence, which predicted one‐year medication adherence with older age and low income. Conclusions: Among Korean stroke survivors, three‐month and one‐year medication persistence and adherence were relatively good. Medication beliefs and three‐month medication adherence were important and modifiable factors predicting three‐month adherence and one‐year adherence, respectively. Relevance to clinical practice: To increase long‐term adherence to medication, various strategies are needed to improve beliefs about medication, taking into account the patient's age and level of knowledge. Purpose: Social distancing and strict visitor restrictions at hospitals have been national policies since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This has challenged the concept of a good death in comfort with the opportunity to say goodbye. Little is known about how these measures have influenced end-of-life (EOL) care among cancer patients who die in acute care hospitals. This study examined changes in the EOL care of cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1,456 adult cancer patients who died in 2019 (n=752) and 2020 (n=704) at a tertiary hospital. Data on EOL care--symptom control and comfort care in an imminently dying state, preparation for death, place of death, and aggressive care in the last month--were reviewed. Results: The 1,456 patients had a median age of 67 years, and 62.5% were men. Patients who died in 2020 were more likely to experience agitation or delirium before death (17.2% vs. 10.9%), to use inotropes/vasopressors near death (59.2% vs. 52.3%), and to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation in their last months (16.3% vs. 12.5%) than those who died in 2019. Additionally, the number of deaths in the emergency room doubled in 2020 compared to 2019 (from 7.1% to 14.1%). Conclusion: This study suggests that EOL care for cancer patients who died in a tertiary hospital deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simple Summary: The incidence of postoperative pneumonia (POP) in patients with cancer is high owing to functional impairment of the immune system associated with cancer and additional lung damage caused by surgery. The incidence of POP following major cancer surgeries is unclear. Therefore, we investigated the incidence and risk factors of POP after cancer surgery in patients with the five most common cancers in Korea using a common data model (CDM). The CDM was a method to easily solve clinical questions using medical big data. The cumulative POP incidence in the five cancers using the CDM was approximately 3%. POP was most common in lung cancer (n = 91, 4.5%), followed by gastric (n = 133, 3.3%), colon (n = 19, 3.1%), liver (n = 14, 1.7%), and breast (n = 5, 0.5%) cancers. Older age, male sex, chronic pulmonary disease, mood disorder, and cerebrovascular disease were POP risk factors in patients with cancer. Background and aims: A novel non–insulin-based metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS‐IR) index has been proposed as a simple and reliable alternative insulin resistance (IR) marker, but its the predictive value in asymptomatic adults with coronary artery calcification (CAC) remains unclear. Methods and results: We enrolled 1576 participants without cardiovascular disease (CVD), who underwent multidetector computed tomography. Logistic regression, restricted cubic spline models and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the association between METS-IR, the ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) and triglyceride glucose index (TyG index) and CAC. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the increase in METS-IR was independently associated with a higher prevalence of CAC (all P < 0.05 in Models 1–3). Furthermore, restricted cubic splines indicated that the significance of METS-IR in predicting CAC was higher than that of other IR indexes. In ROC curve analysis, without considering the P value, the area under the curve of CAC predicted by METS-IR was higher than that of other IR indexes (METS-IR, 0.607; TyG index, 0.603; TG/HDL-C, 0.577). Introduction: Critically ill patients are frequently transferred from other hospitals to the emergency departments (ED) of tertiary hospitals. Due to the unforeseen transfer, the ED length of stay (LOS) of the patient is likely to be prolonged in addition to other potentially adverse effects. In this study we sought to confirm whether the establishment of an organized unit -- the Emergency Transfer Coordination Center (ETCC) -- to systematically coordinate emergency transfers would be effective in reducing the ED LOS of transferred, critically ill patients. Methods: The present study is a retrospective observational study focusing on patients who were transferred from other hospitals and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the ED in a tertiary hospital located in northwestern Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, from January 2019 - December 2020. The exposure variable of the study was ETCC approval before transfer, and ED LOS was the primary outcome. We used propensity score matching for comparison between the group with ETCC approval and the control group. Results: Included in the study were 1,097 patients admitted to the ICU after being transferred from other hospitals, of whom 306 (27.9%) were transferred with ETCC approval. The median ED LOS in the ETCC-approved group was significantly reduced to 277 minutes compared to 385 minutes in the group without ETCC approval. The ETCC had a greater effect on reducing evaluation time than boarding time, which was the same for populations with different clinical features. Conclusion: An ETCC can be effective in systematically reducing the ED LOS of critically ill patients who are transferred from other hospitals to tertiary hospitals that are experiencing severe crowding. Purpose: To determine the effect of family function, relationship satisfaction, and dyadic adjustment on postpartum depression Design and Methods: This descriptive, cross‐sectional study was conducted in 337 postpartum mothers. Findings: Fifty‐five mothers scored above the depression scale cutoff point (>13). Emotional violence from husband, poor problem solving and communication, low relationship satisfaction, dyadic adjustment, and consensus were important risk factors for postpartum depression (p <.0.05). Practice Implications: Family function and partner relationships should be a key focus for midwives and nurses in the postpartum period. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the differences in practices, policies, and perceptions of nurses regarding work‐related utilization of smartphones in acute‐care settings. Background: Mobile devices utilizing emerging technology are widely used in acute‐care settings; however, concerns such as potential distraction, improper use, and negative impact on the nursing image in clinical practice remain valid. Methods: Nurse managers (n = 8) and nurses (n = 181) were enrolled from eight academic tertiary hospitals that have comprehensive electronic medical record systems and mobile versions. Between October 2018 and February 2019, participants completed a questionnaire designed to explore their use of smartphones. The reporting guide for self‐administered surveys of clinicians was applied. Results: Approximately 80% of nurses carried personal smartphones while working, with 70% using their devices for work. The prevalence of work‐related smartphone use ranged from 3% to 43% by functionality, which was lower than that estimated by managers. Frequent uses included taking pictures/videos and internet browsing. Nurses were more positive than managers about the benefits of smartphone use and less burdened by related concerns. Novice and junior nurses were more optimistic than senior nurses. Only one hospital had a policy on nurses' use of personal devices at work. Conclusion: Two unmet needs in the current clinical information system were identified: information supporting task‐related knowledge at the bedside and security of data capture and communication. Implication for nursing policy: The unintended perception gaps between nurses and managers regarding work‐related smartphone use can be closed by nursing leadership. Unmet nursing informatics, particularly for information‐seeking purposes, can be addressed in the context of quality assurance. Aim: If not conducted correctly, nursing handover can threaten patient safety, and so nursing students require good handover education. This study evaluated a handover education programme based on situated learning theory in a clinical practicum. Methods: A quasi‐experimental design and convenience sampling technique were used. The participants (fourth‐grade nursing students recruited from a college in the C province of South Korea) were assigned to an intervention group (n = 38) or a control group (n = 39). A handover education programme that included lectures, expert observations, role playing, peer learning and reflection was received by the intervention group. The control group attended lectures and observed handovers. The handover skills of all participants were tested 2 weeks before and on the last day of the clinical practicum. Handover performance ability, handover clinical judgement ability and handover self‐efficacy were outcome variables. Results: Significant improvements in handover performance ability, handover clinical judgement ability and handover self‐efficacy were observed in the intervention group compared with the control group. Conclusion: The significance of this study lies in the development and application of a programme based on situated learning theory for handover education. Application of theory‐based handover education in clinical practicums is recommended to improve the handover capabilities of nursing students. Aims: This study aimed to explore the role of clinical research coordinators (CRCs) and identify the importance and performance of the role as well as the factors that affect the professional recognition of their role. Methods: A total of 102 CRCs from 10 hospitals were recruited for a survey. The Clinical Trial Nursing Questionnaire scale developed by Ehrenberger and Lillington was used to collect data for the importance–performance analysis. The importance and performance data were plotted on a two‐dimensional grid, and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis was used to determine the influencing factors on the CRC role. Results: The influencing factors on the importance of the CRC role were frequency of protocol assessment, implementation and evaluation and professional nursing role performance. The influencing factors on performance were formal education and training in clinical research, institutional career ladder system for professional development and identification as a principal investigator in research studies. The influencing factor on the professional nursing role perception was the lower component of the 'performance of professional nursing role'. Conclusion: Formal educational preparation, identification as a principal investigator in research studies and clear career progression are supportive factors to the professional recognition of CRC as a specialized nursing role. Background: Given the rapid aging of the population in Korea, efforts to slow down or prevent frailty, to support the health of older adults, should be an important public health priority. This study aimed to evaluate the nurse-led multicomponent intervention for community-dwelling pre-frail or frail elderly on physical and psychosocial outcomes. Method: A non-equivalent control pre-, post-, and follow-up test design was used with a sample of 126 prefrail or frail older adults (62 in the experimental and 64 in the control group). The 12-week multicomponent intervention for the experimental group comprised physical exercise, cognitive training, and nutrition and disease management education. Outcome variables (Timed Up and Go Test results and measures of frailty, handgrip strength, depression, social activity, and social support) were measured both pre- and post-intervention, and after the 12-week follow-up period. Results: For each group, we assessed the significant interaction of time with frailty, depression, social activity, and social support, as well as Timed Up and Go Test results. In the experimental group, levels of depression decreased while levels of social support and social activity increased from each measurement period to the next, within the 12-month study period; those in the control group were relatively stable over time. Conclusions: The results indicate that nurse-led multicomponent intervention was effective for improving physical and psychosocial function of the (pre)frail older adults living alone in Korea, suggesting that older adults can take proactive roles in conducting their daily life and managing their health. We examined to compare menstruation and body mass index (BMI) in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to explore the effects of BMI on menstruation, facial acne, and hirsutism in women with PCOS of child-bearing age. Data from the Korea Nurses' Health Study were analyzed. The effect of BMI on irregularity of menstruation, acne, and hirsutism in the PCOS group was analyzed by logistic regression. The prevalence of PCOS was 7.1% among 11,866 participants. We found that BMI affects menstrual irregularity, facial acne, and hirsutism in PCOS women. Aims Accurate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performance is an essential skill for nursing students so they need to learn the skill correctly from the beginning and carry that forward with them into their clinical practice. For the new normal after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), safe training modules should be developed. This study aimed to develop non-contact CPR training using smart technology for nursing students and to examine its effects, focusing on the accuracy of their performance. The study used a prospective, single-blind, randomized, and controlled trial with repeated measures. Methods and results The non-contact CPR training with smart technology consisted of a 40-min theoretical online lecture session and an 80-min non-contact practice session with real-time feedback devices and monitoring cameras. Sixty-four nursing students were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n  = 31) using non-contact training or a control group (n  = 33) using general training. The accuracy of chest compression and mouth-to-mouth ventilation, and overall performance ability were measured at pretest, right after training, and at a 4-week post-test. The non-contact CPR training significantly increased the accuracy of chest compression (F  = 63.57, P < 0.001) and mouth-to-mouth ventilation (F  = 33.83, P < 0.001), and the overall performance ability (F  = 35.98, P < 0.001) compared to the general CPR training over time. Conclusions The non-contact CPR training using smart technology help nursing students develop their techniques by self-adjusting compression depth, rate, release and hand position, and ventilation volume and rate in real time. Background and Objectives: Compensation for increasedmedical services from reimbursement systems are sometimes insufficient. Generally, appendectomies are performed by individual surgeons with their preferred instrument. Surgical equipment standardization is known to reduce medical cost without compromising patient safety. Hence, we investigated the effectiveness of surgical equipment standardization to reduce the required operative cost for laparoscopic appendectomy at our tertiary hospital. Methods: Nine surgeons at our tertiary hospital agreed to use standardized equipment for laparoscopic appendectomy. We compared outcomes among patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy between December 2012 and June 2013 before standardization (control group) and between August 2015 and February 2016 after standardization. Participating provider and staff convenience was also surveyed using a questionnaire. Results: The implementation of standardized equipment for laparoscopic appendectomy decreased intraoperative supply cost from US $552.92 to $450.17. Operative times also decreased from 73.8 to 53.3 minutes. However, hospital days and complication rates remained unchanged. Participants responded that surgical equipment standardization improved efficiency in the operating room and reduced the cost. Background: Preschool‐age children in hospitals are at a high risk of unexpected incidents. Safety incidents in hospitals can cause serious damage to the children. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the mobile‐type mHealth Safe Kids Hospital (SKH) application (app) for the prevention of hospitalized child safety incidents. Design: This study used a three‐group, randomized controlled trial pre‐post design. Setting(s): This study was conducted in the pediatric ward of three general hospitals in Korea. Participants: A total of 124 eligible hospitalized children and their caregivers were enrolled in the study from June to December 2018. Of these, 116 finally participated in the study, and 8 were excluded because they were discharged before the intervention. Methods: Hospitalized preschool‐age children and their caregivers were randomly allocated into three groups: experimental group I (n = 39), experimental group II (n = 39), and the control group (n = 38). Experimental group I received the SKH app intervention, the experimental group II received a paper‐based intervention, whereas the control group received the usual intervention. Participants' outcomes of awareness, knowledge, and behavior related to hospital safety, were assessed at two time points: baseline and 24 h after the intervention. Results: Hospital safety awareness had a higher increase after intervention in experimental groups I and II than in the control group. Among the four subdomains of hospital safety awareness, there was a significant increase in the scores of experimental group I on three subdomains after the intervention: falls (F = 8.19, p < 0.001), burns (F = 6.73, p = 0.002), and medical devices (F = 6.81, p = 0.002). In hospital safety knowledge and safety behavior, experimental group I had the highest average score after the intervention compared with experimental group II and the control group; however, there was no statistically significant difference in the average score of the three groups. Conclusions: Using the SKH app is easy to attract the interest of preschool‐age children and is also easy for nurses to use in clinical trials; thus, it is considered to be a useful educational intervention to prevent safety incidents in clinical fields in future. Objective: To investigate factors associated with influenza vaccination in cancer survivors. Methods: Study subjects were 1,945 Korean adult cancer survivors. Through medical record review and self‐administered questionnaires, social and medical information was collected. Influenza vaccination was defined as ever having received a flu vaccine between one year before cancer diagnosis and the survey date. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate factors associated with influenza vaccination. Results: Overall, 60.8% of study subjects had received an influenza vaccination. Younger survivors had a significantly lower vaccination rate than did the elderly survivors (80.22% vs. 54.73%). In younger survivors, longer time elapsed since cancer diagnosis, lifestyle modification counselling during cancer treatment, adequate physical exercise (≥150 min/week) and complementary medication use were positively associated with vaccination, whereas extra‐pulmonary cancers, multimodality (≥3) cancer treatment and higher educational achievement were inversely associated. In elderly survivors, fewer factors had a positive (adequate physical exercise) or inverse (multimodality cancer treatment and current smoking) association with influenza vaccination. Conclusion: Influenza vaccination rate was suboptimal, especially among younger cancer survivors. Targeted strategies are necessary to improve influenza vaccination in cancer survivors with consideration of individual characteristics such as age, lifestyle, cancer treatment modality, cancer type and education level. Aim: The study purpose was to investigate effects of a cognitive rehabilitation programme on cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Background: Cognitive impairment is frequently observed in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, and it interferes with many aspects of self‐management, which is fundamental to disease management and quality of life. Design The design is quasi‐experimental. Methods: Data collection was performed between June 2018 and March 2019. Study participants were 60 in‐ or out‐patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The cognitive rehabilitation programme involved six 30‐min sessions administered over a period of 2 weeks and consisted of six areas: attention, memory, language, visuospatial perception, executive function and problem solving. Cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life were measured at three times (preintervention and immediately and 4 weeks after intervention). Results: Cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life were found to be significantly improved over time after administration of the cognitive rehabilitation programme. However, no significant improvement was observed in the control group. Conclusions: Our findings support the potential usefulness of cognitive intervention to promote cognitive function, self‐management ability and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Aim: This study examined the effect of an individualized educational intervention on the knowledge, attitudes and self‐management ability after 12 weeks for outpatients with atrial fibrillation. Methods: A randomized control‐group pretest‐post‐test experimental design was used. Elderly outpatients with atrial fibrillation aged over 65 years were recruited from a university hospital in Korea. The experimental group received a 50‐min individualized education on self‐management, one telephone counselling after 8 weeks and maintenance of a self‐management diary for 12 weeks. Data were collected from November 2017 to April 2018 and analysed using SPSS 22.0 for descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing. Results: The participants' mean age was 71.9 (4.6) years. Compared to the control group (n = 29), the experimental group (n = 31) showed a significantly greater improvement in knowledge regarding atrial fibrillation and stroke prevention (t = −2.27, p =.027) and self‐management behaviours (t = −8.02, p <.001). There were no significant group differences in attitudes towards atrial fibrillation. Conclusion: The findings suggest that education for elderly people with atrial fibrillation should be individualized, focusing on self‐management in daily life to prevent cardiovascular complications. Future research is needed to confirm the long‐term effects of such education programmes. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Older adults with AF tend to lack the knowledge and have inadequate self‐management skills regarding their illness. Aims and objectives: This study aimed to compare anxiety, resilience, and depression between COVID‐19 unit (confirmed patients and suspected patients) and non‐COVID‐19 unit nurses and assess their effects on depression. Background: Nurses working during the global pandemic are known to be physically and psychologically exhausted, and experience severe anxiety and depression. However, there is a lack of studies comparing anxiety and depression between COVID‐19 and non‐COVID‐19 unit nurses. Design: Descriptive research study. Methods: This study was conducted on 64 nurses who directly worked for more than a month in a COVID‐19 unit of a general hospital with nationally designated negative‐pressure isolation beds and 64 nurses working in a non‐COVID‐19 unit. Data were collected through questionnaires and were analysed using SPSS 25.0. Reporting of this research adheres to the STROBE guidelines. Results: Anxiety and depression were significantly higher in nurses working with patients suspected to have COVID‐19 rather than nurses working with confirmed COVID‐19 patients and non‐COVID‐19 patients. Resilience was significantly lower in suspected patient unit nurses than in COVID‐19 unit nurses. Anxiety was the major factor predicting depression in both COVID‐19 unit (confirmed patients and suspected patients) and non‐COVID‐19 unit nurses with 76.6%, 80.7%, and 63.6% explanatory power, respectively. Conclusions: Among nurses working in COVID‐19 units, suspected patients unit nurses had higher depression than confirmed patients unit nurses due to an unsafe facility environment, insufficient personal protective equipment, and unknown conditions of the patients. Thus, interventions which have a high impact on depression need to be provided to relieve anxiety. Relevance to clinical practice: The nursing organisation must provide comprehensive support including coordinated shifts, internal motivation, incentives, up‐to‐date information, and clear infection prevention guidelines to relieve anxiety caused by exhaustive workload, uncertainty of infectious diseases, and lack of human and material resources. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate a communication skills program based on nonviolent communication targeted on inpatient alcoholics at the alcoholics specialized ward. Design and Methods: The sample for this mixed methods quasi‐experimental study comprised 47 patients who were hospitalized in the alcoholic wards of two psychiatric hospitals in South Korea. Findings: The program effectively improved participants' empathy, anger expression, communication competence, and alcohol abstinence self‐efficacy (p <.001). Practice implications: This program could be implemented in community‐based alcoholic care with the aim of preventing relapse and serve as the basis for developing similar programs for family members. The purpose is to determine the effect of video-based information provision using a smart pad on uncertainty, anxiety, physiological parameters, pain, and educational satisfaction among patients hospitalized for a bone marrow biopsy. This study was done with a pre-/posttest nonequivalent control group design. The subjects were 65 patients in the hematology-oncology ward of a university hospital in Cheongju, South Korea, who underwent a bone marrow biopsy between August 2017 and May 2018. Thirty volunteers were allocated to the control group and 35 volunteers to the intervention group. The experimental group showed significantly lower uncertainty and significantly greater satisfaction with education than did the control group. No significant difference was observed in anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and pain. Video-based information provision using a smart pad was effective for lowering uncertainty among patients receiving a bone marrow biopsy, as well as for boosting their sense of educational satisfaction. Objectives: Korean red ginseng (KRG) has been widely used as an alternative medicine to relieve menopausal symptoms. However, there is still a lack of clinical studies showing the effects of KRG on menopausal symptoms after gynecologic cancer surgery. Therefore, the authors investigated the effects of KRG on surgical menopause symptoms in premenopausal women with gynecologic cancer. Design: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted. Settings/Location: The study was performed at Severance Hospital at the Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. Subjects: Fifty-five premenopausal women diagnosed with gynecologic cancer were enrolled in the study. Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned to a KRG (n = 29) or a placebo control group (n = 26). Subjects were administered either KRG (a total of 3 g per day) or placebo supplements for 12 weeks. Outcome measures: Patients' physical measurements (height, weight, and blood pressure) and blood samples (lipid profiles, hormone profiles, biochemical profiles, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) at baseline and at 12 weeks were compared. Changes in menopausal symptoms based on the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) were also compared between these two time points and two groups. Results: After 12 weeks, the MRS score was significantly reduced in each group (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively), but there were no significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.661). No adverse events were observed in either group. After comparing 11 MRS symptoms between the two groups, the KRG group seemed to be superior to the placebo group on the subscale of sexual complaints (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Through the study, KRG did not show absolute relief of surgical menopause symptoms in premenopausal women after gynecologic cancer surgery. However, the study did demonstrate that KRG may be effective in reducing sexual complaints. Further studies are required to evaluate the long-term effects of KRG in a larger patient population. Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored blood glucose control protocol for postoperative cardiac surgery patients treated in intensive care. Design: Retrospective study. Methods: Data for the control group (non‐tailored protocol) were collected from medical records at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea between April–July 2015. Data for the experimental group (tailored protocol) were obtained from medical records between April–July 2016. After adjusting the target blood glucose range, eliminating single‐dose insulin administration and extending the blood glucose measurement time interval, data for blood glucose measurements, time for reaching and maintaining target blood glucose, mean number of daily blood glucose measurements and insulin dose adjustments for the experimental group were collected. Results: In the experimental group (where the target blood glucose rate was increased) the hypoglycaemia rate and the variation in blood glucose decreased significantly compared with the control group. In particular, the experimental group maintained relatively stable blood glucose levels by retaining a small variation range in glucose, regardless of the presence of diabetes. Time required for maintaining target blood glucose, mean number of daily blood glucose measurements and insulin dose adjustments per patient decreased. Conclusion: The tailored protocol contributes to the safe and effective control of blood glucose in critical care patients after cardiac surgery and to the efficiency of nurses administering it. Impact: This study has two significant impacts. The application of the tailored protocol has a positive impact on patients' blood glucose management, a critical component of treatment for postoperative cardiac patients in intensive care units. It also has a positive impact on the efficiency of nurses applying it. Objective: To identify the occurrence of late symptom effects among childhood cancer survivors (CCS), generate subgroups using a latent class analysis and determine whether the subgroups differ in demographic and health‐related characteristics and health‐promoting lifestyle. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey was conducted on 130 adult CCS in Korea. The Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale was used to perform a latent class analysis based on symptom occurrence to generate subgroups. Results: Difficulty in concentration, lack of energy, worrying, drowsiness, irritability, pain, difficulty in sleeping, nervousness, sadness and dry mouth appeared in more than 50% of the CCS. The three symptom subgroups identified were "all high" (46.2%), "high physical moderate psych" (26.9%) and "moderate physical low psych" (26.9%). The percentage of non‐smokers was the highest in the moderate physical low psych subgroup (85.7%; p =.009), and the percentage of heavy alcohol consumption was the highest in the high physical moderate psych subgroup (31.4%; p =.013). Spiritual growth scores and interpersonal relationship scores were statistically different between subgroups (F = 3.35, p =.038; F = 7.55, p =.001 respectively). Conclusion: The results could guide the development of intervention programmes to strengthen spiritual growth and interpersonal relationships and facilitate further examination of the causal relationship between smoking and drinking and late symptoms of CCS. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a comprehensive mobile application program in managing behavior and psychological symptoms of home‐dwelling patients with dementia in South Korea. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest‐posttest design was conducted. A total of 26 family caregivers participated in this study. The application program consists of understanding of dementia, interventions, communication skills, coping methods, and bulletin boards. Data collection was performed from July 9, 2018, to October 4, 2018. Family caregivers' fatigue, sleep, and burden and patients with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia were measured. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, independent t tests, Mann–Whitney U test, repeated measures analysis of variance, and Friedman test were used. Results: The application program offered environmental management in an intervention using communication skills and coping methods, depending on the behavioral and psychological symptom type. The results showed significant differences between the two groups in family caregivers' fatigue (F = 11.24, p =.003) and burden (χ2 = 10.55, p =.005). Conclusion: The findings showed the application program improved family caregivers' fatigue and burden. It also suggested there is a need to develop a wandering persons location program to improve family caregivers' stress and patients' behavioral problems in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Conflicting results have been reported concerning the progression of medial meniscal extrusion (MME) after arthroscopic transtibial pull-out repair of medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMRT), and no study has evaluated the relevant factors affecting the progression of MME. Purpose: To (1) evaluate the subjective and objective surgical outcomes of arthroscopic transtibial pull-out repair of MMRT and (2) identify relevant factors affecting the progression of MME after surgery. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 63 patients who underwent isolated arthroscopic transtibial pull-out repair of MMRT between January 2010 and June 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. Clinical scores and various radiographic parameters were evaluated to assess the surgical outcomes. The patients were classified into 2 groups according to the change in medial meniscal extrusion ratio (MMER) at 1 year after surgery compared with before surgery (group 1 consisted of 21 patients with reduced or maintained MMER; group 2 consisted of 42 patients with increased MMER). Variables including baseline demographics, radiographic parameters, and arthroscopic findings were compared to identify relevant factors affecting the progression of MME after surgery. Results: In the overall cohort, clinical outcomes at postoperative 2 years improved significantly (P <.001 for visual analog scale score, International Knee Documentation Committee subjective score, and Lysholm score), whereas radiographic parameters showed an overall deterioration compared with the preoperative level. In subgroup comparisons, a significant difference was seen in the time from the onset of symptoms until surgery (P <.001), defined as preoperative symptom duration, which a subsequent logistic regression analysis revealed to be a relevant factor associated with the progression of MMER (P =.015). Both groups showed progression of radiographic osteoarthritis, but the progression was significantly higher in group 2 compared with group 1 at postoperative 2 years (P =.032). On receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the cutoff point for preoperative symptom duration associated with the progression of MMER was 13 weeks (sensitivity, 52.4%; specificity, 76.2%; accuracy, 72.4%). Conclusion: The arthroscopic transtibial pull-out repair of MMRT showed clinical improvement but did not prevent the progression of knee osteoarthritis, MME, or MMER. Although the preservation of MMER was not capable of completely preventing the progression of knee degeneration, MMER still has a potential clinical value in delaying the rate of progression of knee degeneration. Early surgical repair of MMRT, within 13 weeks from the onset of symptoms, might be helpful to prevent the progression of MME. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
