Pollen of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) could germinate in vitro with emergence of 1, 2 and 3 tubes from individual pollen grain on germination medium (modified after Mercado et al. Sci Hortic 57:273–281, 1994). The highest percentage of pollen germination was observed on medium supplemented with 20% sucrose while addition of osmotica such as polyethylene glycol or mannitol did not have positive effect on butterfly pea pollen germination. Starch utilization, through conversion to simpler sugars including sucrose, may be the cause for pollen tube elongation. The optimum pH for maximum germination (42%) was recorded to be 5.7. Addition of various plant growth regulators including brassin-like substance and GA3 singly into medium supplemented with 20% sucrose at pH 5.7 did not result in germination percentage higher than that on the medium supplemented with only 20% sucrose. The germination percentage was increased to 71% and the pollen tube length was the greatest when butterfly pea pollen was cultured on medium supplemented with 20% sucrose, 0.25 mg L− 1 brassin-like substance and 1 mg L− 1 GA3 at pH 5.7. This suggests that brassin-like substance and GA3 may play an important synergistic role on pollen germination of butterfly pea in vitro.

Active compounds from natural sources such as butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) such as anthocyanin was found able to be integrated with chitosan and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) polymers in their application as smart packaging. Smart packaging that contains anthocyanin shows a colour response to changes in pH due to food spoilage. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of chitosan (CH) and PVA proportion on the quality of biodegradable film incorporating butterfly pea flower’s anthocyanin (BPFA) extract included film thickness, tensile strength (TS), elongation (E%), total anthocyanin content and the film colour response at different pH range were characterized. Concentrated anthocyanin extract was obtained from butterfly pea flower petals in ultrasonic-assisted leaching using ethanol as a solvent and followed by rotary vacuum evaporation. The film-forming solution was prepared from a binary mixture of CH:PVA in the ratio of 20:80, 40:60, 60:40, and 80:20. The results showed that films obtained from all combinations could exhibit different colour responses in various pH ranges, indicating the successful incorporation of anthocyanin. The film with CH:PVA ratio of 40:60 showed a more pronounced colour change, among other treatments. It was also characterized by a thickness of 0.15 mm, TS of 11.02 MPa, E% of 48.00%, and total anthocyanin of 25.08 mg/g. The film showed high potential to be used as biodegradable smart packaging for the food system which produces pH change upon deterioration.

Objective Clitoria ternatea is a well-known bioactive plant used to treat several inflammatory ailments in Ayurvedic system of medicine in India. The present investigation aimed to determine the anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea roots (EECT) in animal models. Methods The anti-inflammatory activity of the EECT was evaluated by carrageenan and histamine-induced paw edema. Results EECT showed a significant reduction in mean paw edema volume in both carrageenan and histamine-induced inflammation. The efficacy of EECT in rheumatoid arthritis was tested against Freund’s complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritic model in Wistar rats. The anti-arthritic effect of EECT was determined by systematic scoring of arthritis symptoms and measuring paw edema. A considerable decrease in paw diameter was observed in the EECT (200 and 400 mg/kg) and diclofenac (10 mg/kg) treated groups after day 7. Diclofenac (10 mg/kg) and EECT (400 mg/kg) showed a significant reduction in paw diameter from day 14 compared with CFA control (P Conclusion This study provides a pharmacological rationale for the traditional use of C. ternatea against inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis in India.

The present study demonstrated the evaluation of starch based film formulated with ClitoriaTernatea flowers extracts which act as pH indicator. Maceration, sonication and infusion extraction were employed to determine the percentage yield of the flower extracts. Extract solutions (1mg/mL) were subjected to UPLC-QTOF/MS in order to detect and identify the chemical constituents of C. ternatea. UV-Vis analysis is done by treating the extracts (4mg/mL) with prepared buffer solution in various pH value ranged (2.0 – 11.0) and the absorbance were observed within a broad range of wavelength (400-700 nm). 100 mL solution of 4g starch, C. ternatea extracts and glycerol (19g plasticizer/100g starch) in distilled water were undergo gelatinization process to form the desired thin film. The functional group presented in the film and raw materials were detected and defined by analyzing through FTIR spectroscopy. From the results, maceration techniques produced the higher yield of extracts with 41.48% compared to sonication and infusion method. Variation colours of C. ternatea solution were displayed in different value of pH. At pH lower than 3, the extract solution illustrated light red to purple in colour while at higher pH value to the more basic pH (4,5,6,7,8 and 9), the colour can be perceived as blue. From the gelatinization process, the blue smooth thin layer of film was produced. FTIR analysis showed that all of samples contain C-O bond (3300 cm-1). Starch based film formulated with C. ternatea as pH indicator can be applied to detect the spoilage of foods in the production of food wrapper and packaging.

Chrysanthemums possess no metabolic pathway to synthesize delphinidin because of the lack of endogenous F3'5'H gene encoding the key enzyme in its biosynthetic pathway; therefore, there are no blue or blue-purple chrysanthemums occurring naturally. Currently, the introduction of exogenous F3'5'H into chrysanthemums is an efficient method for breeding bluish chrysanthemums. In this study, we explored the effects of the introduction of mutant CmF3'H (generated via site-directed mutagenesis, T485S, CmF3'Hm) and exogenous Osteospermum hybrid F3'5'H (OhF3'5'H) genes combined with Clitoria ternatea A3'5'GT (CtA3'5'GT) on delphinidin synthesis in chrysanthemum. Among the F3'5'H transgenic lines, those overexpressing endogenous CmF3'Hm could not generate blue flower color, although red color was changed to light pink due to CtA3'5'GT function. Meanwhile, OhF3'5'H introduction promoted the accumulation of delphinidin and its derivatives in chrysanthemum, changing the flower color from red-purple to purple-violet. These results indicate the applicability of exogenous OhF3'5'H and CtA3'5'GT transformation for promoting delphinidin synthesis during the molecular breeding of violet/blue chrysanthemums.

Clitoria ternatea (L.) is a medicinal leguminous plant and is cultivated to cater the need of herbal industries and asthetic purposes. The unavailability of steady molecular marker impedes the genetic improvement of C. ternatea. In the present study, transferability of 98 pairs of Cajanus spp. specific SSR primers were assessed among 14 genotypes of C. ternatea, varied for their flower color, floral architecture and bio-metabolite (taraxerol and delphinidin) content, and out of them 43 had successfully amplified the fragments. Among them, 36 pairs of primers showed 100% transferability, whereas rest seven varied from 42.86 to 92.85% transferability. The transferable 43 pairs of SSR primers generated 196 alleles across the 14 genotypes and the AMOVA analysis showed moderate genetic variation (55.1%) among the genotypes of C. ternatea, which was also reinforced by Nei’s genetic distance and gene identity estimates derived haplotype matrix. Similarly, both the principal coordinate analysis and dendrogram grouped these 14 genotypes of C. ternatea into two major clusters based on SSR allele distribution and frequency, and the clustering pattern is in accordance with petal color but in contrast to floral architecture. MCheza based outlier analysis revealed 16 alleles for balancing selection, which are putatively involved in the maintenance of genetic polymorphism in C. ternatea. Moreover, the estimates of molecular diversity and bio-metabolite content revealed the possible use of these genotypes in future breeding programme of this species.

A new norneolignan derivative, clitorternalactone (1), has been isolated from the stems of Clitoria ternatea, together with six known compounds, clitorienolactone A (2), myricetin 3-glucoside (3), quercetin 3-glucoside (4), kaempferol 3-glucoside (5), taraxerol (6), and taraxerone (7). The structure of the new compound 1 was determined through spectroscopic and MS analyses. Among the isolates, compound 1 exhibited cytotoxicities with IC50 values of 2.54 ± 0.23, 3.68 ± 0.17, and 4.05 ± 0.43 μM, respectively, against DLD-1, CCRF-CEM, and IMR-32 cell lines. In addition, clitorternalactone (1), clitorienolactone A (2), quercetin 3-glucoside (4), and kaempferol 3-glucoside (5) showed potent inhibition with IC50 values of 3.05 ± 0.12, 5.44 ± 0.46, 10.20 ± 0.69, and 13.57 ± 0.36 μM, respectively, against LPS-induced NO generation.

Introduction: Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) is a vine that has various colors such as pink, light blue, white, and purple. This plant is commonly used as a food coloring and ornamental plants. Butterfly pea has pharmacological potential, among others, as high antioxidants. The antioxidants of the butterfly pea show much higher activity than other flowers. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent the occurrence of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which is currently increasing in incidence and mortality due to AKI reaching 23.9% in adults and 13.8% in children. Aim of study: This article aims to discuss the potential of butterfly pea extract (Clitoria ternatea) as a preventative for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Method: The research method used is the literature search technique on 20 articles from the Google Scholar database. Results and Discussion: The results of the literature search show that the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) has antioxidant compounds that have the potential to prevent the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI). Butterfly pea extract has the potential to reduce levels of urea, serum creatinine, reduce levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increase levels of glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The antioxidant activity of flavonoids and tannins in butterfly pea extract was found to have a nephroprotective effect against exposure to toxic substances. Conclusion: The conclusion from this literature search is that the antioxidant content contained in butterfly pea extract can be a good alternative as a nephroprotector to prevent AKI.

This research focused on biosynthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles using Clitoria ternatea flower extracts under the ultrasound-assisted method. The synthesized nanoparticles were detected by UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The effect of ultrasound method on physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles was compared to the use of reflux method. The influence of the character on biological activity of the nanoparticles were tested for their antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Chemical activity of the nanoparticles was also evaluated as antioxidant by using radical inhibition by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals (DPPH) assay. The results showed that Clitoria ternatea flower exhibited reduction capability to form nanoparticles with the particle size ranging at 18-50 nm. In general, the ultrasound produces smaller particle size compared with reflux method for both silver and gold nanoparticles. The smaller particle size obtained from the ultrasound-assisted method compared to the Reflux method was found to give higher antibacterial activity toward tested bacteria. The nanoparticles demonstrated the antioxidative activity as shown by the DPPH inhibition at more than 50 %. The results suggest that the use of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts as reducing agent and ultrasound-assisted synthesis are fit as a green method for the synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles.

Clitoria ternatea or commonly known as 'Butterfly pea' has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine in which various parts of the plants are used to treat health issues such as indigestion, constipation, arthritis, skin diseases, liver and intestinal problems. The flowers of C. ternatea are used worldwide as ornamental flowers and traditionally used as a food colorant. This paper reviews the recent advances in the extraction and biological activities of phytochemicals from C. ternatea flowers. The application of maceration or ultrasound assisted extraction greatly increased the yield (16-247% of increase) of phytochemicals from C. ternatea flowers. Various phytochemicals such as kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin glycosides as well as anthocyanins have been isolated from C. ternatea flowers. Clitoria ternatea flower extracts were found to possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antidiabetic activities which are beneficial to human health. Clitoria ternatea flower is a promising candidate for functional food applications owing to its wide range of pharmacotherapeutic properties as well as its safety and effectiveness.

Telang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) contains phenolic compounds which can act as antioxidants by donating hydrogen so as to stabilize the lack of electrons in free radicals. This study aims to determine the antioxidant potential of telang flower ethanol extract by looking at the IC50 value. Telang flowers were extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. The potential for antioxidants was determined by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method with a comparison of vitamin C which had been shown to have the potential of free radicals which were very potent. The results showed the IC50 value of telang flower ethanol extract was 41.36 ± 1.191 μg / mL, based on that value the telang flower extract from the Sleman area was in the very potent category so that it could be developed as a source of antioxidants from natural ingredients.

The stability of anthocyanins is greatly affected by pH and temperature, and thus their application in food products is limited. This study was aimed to develop an antibacterial food colorant using anthocyanin from Clitoria ternatea flowers by applying microencapsulation technology. Maltodextrin was used as a carrier agent in the spray drying process. The anthocyanin microcapsule was durable to the light exposure up to 21 days, and the best color stability was observed between the temperature range of − 20 °C to 4 °C. However, the color was sustained with approximately 50% of the stability index after 1 day exposure at 80 °C and 180 °C. On disk diffusion assay, the anthocyanin microcapsule manifested a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-bacteria. According to minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) assay, anthocyanin microcapsule exhibited bactericidal activity on all test bacteria, with the lowest MIC and MBC observed on Escherichia coli. The application of anthocyanin microcapsule on muffins has shown a significant inhibitory activity on foodborne bacteria. This study revealed the potential of C. ternatea anthocyanin microcapsule as a bio-preservative, which can prolong the shelf life of baked food products.

Clitoria ternatea is often known as butterfly pea plant by the natives and is one of the major plants used in Ayurveda and traditional medicine worldwide. It is also used in food and cosmetic industries for various purposes. In this study, methanol leaf extract of Clitoria ternatea was studied for its antibacterial and in vitro anticancer study against human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL60). Secondary metabolites like alkaloids, phlobatannin, triterpenoids, flavonoids, lipids, steroids, terpenoids, tannins and glycosides are identified in the extract by phytochemical screening. Leaf extract showed the presence of ethers and carboxylic acid groups (GCMS analysis). The leaf extract showed resistance against Salmonella typhi. Thus, from this study it can be concluded Clitoria ternatea leaves methanol extract has bioactive compounds showing anticancer activity against HL60 cells.

Clitoria ternatea flowers are known as butterfly pea flowers which contain many bioactive compounds and can be found in tropical countries. However, the bioactive compounds are easily lost when exposed to various environmental conditions. Encapsulation technologies are introduced to provide maximum protection to the encapsulated bioactive compounds. The main objectives of this study were to determine the physicochemical properties of C. ternatea flowers encapsulated in gelatine prepared using different encapsulating methods and the microbiological properties of the best encapsulating methods for C. ternatea flowers with gelatine. In this study, the moisture contents for ultrasonic spray dried powders recorded the lowest (5.94±0.44%) while samples of convection oven recorded the highest (14.33±1.30%). However, the ultrasonic spray dried powders demonstrated the highest total flavonoid contents, but convection oven dried powders showed the lowest. The results for total anthocyanin contents were similar to total flavonoid contents. The highest encapsulation efficiency based on anthocyanin contents was found in freeze dried powders (95.75±0.24%). These results showed the same antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) with the highest percentage inhibition of freeze dried powders and the lowest percentage inhibition of ultrasonic spray dried powders. The phytochemical functional group that revealed from Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis also indicate the presence of high amount of phenolic compounds in freeze dried powders although with ‘collapse building’ shape with fibrillary structure. The freeze dried powder showed the highest L* value (45.62±0.54), yet ultrasonic spray dried powders highest a*, b* and C* value. Thus, the analysis for microbial properties was carried out on freeze dried powders as freeze dryer was chosen as the best encapsulating methods. The freeze dried powders showed inhibition against gram positive and gram negative bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica and fungi such as Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. The current study demonstrated the potential of using gelatine to encapsulate technique to retain antioxidant compounds in gelatine encapsulated C. ternatea flowers. This finding provides useful information on the use of different encapsulated methods for the development of functional food products for gelatine encapsulated flowers of C. ternatea.

An anthocyanin color pigment result from butterfly pea flower maceration has been done. This study aims to determine the effect of time variation in the maceration of anthocyanin butterfly pea flower extract and the stability of butterfly pea flower extract as an indicator of acid-base titration. Color pigment levels were determined quantitatively with a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The anthocyanin levels obtained during the duration of maceration 5 days in a row resulted from 4.3915%, 5.9869%, 7.3970%, 8.8995%, and 10.2864%. While the anthocyanin levels using a differential pH method were 14.2775 mg/L and 14.9455 mg/L with % RPD value was 4.57%. The results of the study stated that the indicators of the butterfly pea flower crown extract can be a substitute for the synthetic phenolphthalein indicator that has been used.

This work is devoted to the study of the effect of Clitoria ternatea L. decoction for energy and carbohydrate metabolism in conditions of increased physical activity, the analysis of possibilities carbohydrate and lipid metabolism markers correcting in a model of experimental hyperphagia and experimental diabetes, and the efficiency of the stabilization of liver injury and lipid peroxidation markers in rats in an experimental model of chronic alcohol intoxication. It’s established that Clitoria ternatea L. has a stabilizing effect on carbohydrate metabolism in rats with experimental diabetes and hyperphagia, exhibits antioxidant and hepatoprotective effect in rats with experimental alcoholic liver, comparable to the action of classical hepatoprotector «Hepsil-Rn», has adaptogenic effect in experimental model of physical activity, comparable to the energy drink «Burn». The effect of the prepatation tested was more pronounced under alloxan diabetes than the effect of the anti-diabetic «Sadifit» collection. The results obtained may be due to the presence of flavonoids, ascorbic acid, tannins and unsaturated fatty acids, exhibiting an antioxidant effect, as well as glycosides, terpenes and diterpenes, contributing to increased permeability of cell membranes for glucose.

Part of the native root nodule endophytic microflora referring to members of the genera Proteobacteria and Sphingobacteria were used to test their bioefficacy as seed biopriming. These were quantified for their plant growth promoting (PGP) attributes such as IAA production, P and K-solubilization and ACC deaminase production. Results showed that significantly highest IAA was produced by E. hormaechi RCT10. The highest P-solubilization was observed with S. maltophila RCT31 it was solubilizing all the substrate tri-calcium phosphate, di-calcium phosphate, and zinc phosphate. Significantly highest K-solubilization was observed with S. maltophila RCT31 followed by E. turicensis RCT5. However, the maximum zinc solubilization was reported with S. maltophila RCT31 followed by E. turicensis RCT5. The maximum ACC deaminase was quantified in the bacterium. Results revealed that the E. hormaechi RCT10 utilized seed leechates most effectively while root exudates were maximally utilized by S. maltophila RCT31. The pots experiment proves that S. maltophila RCT31 was the most effective bacterium and it was replication vis-à-vis field experiment. In particular, S. maltophila RCT31 holds strong potential to be possibly used as a bioformulation for the medicinal legume, as an economical and eco-friendly alternative to agrochemicals.

Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower is commonly used to treat various diseases and has long been part of the science of phytomedicines. Ultrasonic assisted extraction technique is a simple, cheap and efficient alternative to traditional extraction methods, producing a much smaller particle size than conventional spray drier. This study was aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and microbiological properties of microencapsulated butterfly pea flower (MEBP) powder prepared using ultrasonic spraying technique. The samples were microencapsulated with different amount of Gum Arabic (GA) (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10%). Surface morphology of the MEBP powder was examined using SEM showed different molecular structures in different MEBP powder. FTIR analysis identified phenolic hydroxyl group (1061.69 cm-1 and 3385.36 cm-1 ), sulfite group (1062.01 cm-1 , 1065.92 cm-1 , 1077.15 cm-1 , 1234.72 cm-1 and 1261.74 cm-1 ) and amide group (1635.99 cm-1 , 1636.74 cm-1 , 1654.14 cm-1 and 3417.2 cm-1 ). 2,2-diphenyl-1 -picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) found to be ranging from 35.85±0.57 to 130.85±3.00 mg GAE/g dried sample, 4.32±0.04 to 6.90±0.11 mg QE/g dried sample, respectively. It was found that Bacillus cereus was sensitive to MEBP powder as the results showed a prominent inhibition zone (5.67±0.6 mm to 11.67±2.3 mm). MEBP produced with GA 6% ultrasonic spray drier was found to be effective in sustaining its antioxidative activities and the microbial activities were found to be active. This result provided useful information data on the best technique to use ultrasonic spray dryer to retain antioxidant compounds.

Clitoria ternatea is a herbaceous plant with many health benefits. Extraction is crucial to obtain its bioactive components which contribute to its antioxidant properties. Therefore, this study was conducted to find an optimum extraction condition of C. ternatea flower on total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity) as well as to determine its total flavonoid content (TFC) and anthocyanin content based on the optimum extraction condition generated by Response Surface Methodology (RSM)-Design Expert 7.1.5. TPC, TFC and total anthocyanin of C. ternatea were conducted by Folin Ciocalteu (FC), calorimetric assay and pH differential method, respectively. The ranges of selected independent variables were ethanol concentration (30°C-90% v/v), time (60-120 min) and temperature (30°C-70°C). The optimum extraction condition was obtained at 39.62% v/v ethanol concentration, 90 min and 44.24°C. However, these values were slightly adjusted according to the convenience of equipment to operate in which ethanol concentration was adjusted to 37% v/v, time remain at 90 min and temperature at 45°C. The predicted values of TPC and DPPH radical scavenging activity were 41.60 mg GAE/g dry samples and 68.12% inhibition and were experimentally verified to be 41.17 ± 0.5 mg GAE/g dry samples and 63.53 ± 0.95% inhibition of TPC and DPPH radical scavenging activity respectively. This result has showed RSM can optimise TPC and radical scavenging activity of C. ternatea. Upon the optimum condition, the TFC determined was 187.05 ± 3.18 mg quercetin/g dried sample which was higher than TPC and the total anthocyanin content was 28.60 ± 0.04 mg/L. Hence, the extractable phenolic, flavonoid and anthocyanin compounds indicated that C. ternatea is a good source of natural antioxidant.

Currently, public awareness towards the usage of dyes and colorants from plant extracts as an alternative for synthetic colorants are increasing. Hence, the blue colour of Clitoria Ternatea flowers signifies the presence of anthocyanin which has numerous benefits. In this study, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of anthocyanin from Clitoria Ternatea flowers using ethanol as solvent based on the design of experiment given by response surface methodology was performed. A central composite design was applied to evaluate the optimal conditions of three process variables namely extraction temperature (°C), extraction time (min) and solid-to-liquid ratio (g/mL). The concentration of anthocyanin was analyzed using pH differential method via UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. At quadratic model of R2=0.76633, the obtained extraction yield of the blue dye was 49.97%. A validation test was carried out under critical conditions gave 48.61% of extraction yield which was closed to the predicted value of 49.36%. As for the total anthocyanin content (TAC), 0.457 mg/g of anthocyanin was obtained. In a nutshell, MAE is a viable extraction method for extracting anthocyanins from Clitoria Ternatea flowers. Thus, the use of Clitoria Ternatea extract has a potential use as an alternative source of food colorants replacing the existing synthetic dyes.

Simple Summary Supplementation of high-fat meals with edible plants is the principal strategy to control postprandial dysmetabolism and inflammation. This study demonstrated that consumption of Clitoria ternatea flower extract (CTE) decreased postprandial serum triglyceride and serum free fatty acids, and improved plasma antioxidant status and glutathione peroxidase activity responses to a high-fat meal challenge in overweight and obese participants. However, CTE could not reduce the effect of HF meal-induced increase in postprandial glycemia and the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The findings of the present study suggest that CTE may be used as an effective ingredient to suppress postprandial lipemia and improve the antioxidant status in overweight and obese individuals that frequently consume HF diets. Abstract High-fat (HF) meal-induced postprandial lipemia, oxidative stress and low-grade inflammation is exacerbated in overweight and obese individuals. This postprandial dysmetabolism contributes to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. Clitoria ternatea flower extract (CTE) possesses antioxidant potential and carbohydrate and fat digestive enzyme inhibitory activity in vitro. However, no evidence supporting a favorable role of CTE in the modulation of postprandial lipemia, antioxidant status and inflammation in humans presently exists. In the present study, we determine the effect of CTE on changes in postprandial glycemic and lipemic response, antioxidant status and pro-inflammatory markers in overweight and obese men after consumption of an HF meal. Following a randomized design, sixteen participants (age, 23.5 ± 0.6 years, and BMI, 25.7 ± 0.7 kg/m2) were assigned to three groups that consumed the HF meal, or HF meal supplemented by 1 g and 2 g of CTE. Blood samples were collected at fasting state and then at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300 and 360 min after the meal consumption. No significant differences were observed in the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) for postprandial glucose among the three groups. Furthermore, 2 g of CTE decreased the iAUC for serum triglyceride and attenuated postprandial serum free fatty acids at 360 min after consuming the HF meal. In addition, 2 g of CTE significantly improved the iAUC for plasma antioxidant status, as characterized by increased postprandial plasma FRAP and thiol levels. Postprandial plasma glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly higher at 180 min after the consumption of HF meal with 2 g of CTE. No significant differences in the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6, interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α) were observed at 360 min among the three groups. These findings suggest that CTE can be used as a natural ingredient for reducing postprandial lipemia and improving the antioxidant status in overweight and obese men after consuming HF meals.

Butterfly pea flower have great sensory attraction, but they have not yet been used widely in Vietnam. Extracts of butterfly pea flowers can be used conveniently as a natural blue colorant for food products. In this study, the identification of anthocyanin compounds in butterfly pea flowers was performed by UPLC coupled with a UV and Mass spectrometer instrument. Positive and negative ion electrospray MS/MS chromatograms and spectra of the anthocyanin compounds were determined. By analyzing the chromatograms and spectra for each ion, five anthocyanins were identified in the butterfly pea flower extract, these were delphinidin-3-(6”‐p-coumaroyl)-rutinoside, cyanidin 3-(6”-p-coumaroyl)-rutinoside, delphinidin-3-(p-coumaroyl) glucose in both cis- and trans- isomers, cyanidin-3-(p-coumaroyl-glucoside) and delphinidin-3-pyranoside. Additionally, based on their intensity, it was determined that cyanidin-3-(p-coumaroyl-glucoside) was the most abundant anthocyanin, followed by cyanidin 3-(6”-p-coumaroyl)-rutinoside, delphinidin-3-(p-coumaroyl-glucoside), delphinidin-3-(6”-p-coumaroyl)-rutinoside and delphinidin-3-pyranoside. In this study, cyanidin derivatives were discovered in butterfly pea flower extract, where these compounds had not been detected in previous studies.

C. ternatea is often used as a natural food colouring besides improving the aesthetic value of foods. It contains various antioxidants and bioactive compounds, which exert many functions, such as counteracting oxidative stress, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of C. ternatea flower extract and its protective effect on bisphenol A (BPA)-induced oxidative injury in female murine reproductive system. DPPH free radical scavenging activity (EC50 12.47 ± 2.96 mg/mL) and total phenolic content (4.59 ± 0.09 mg GAE/g) of C. ternatea flower extract were determined. Then, Institute Cancer Research (ICR) dams were administered with BPA and/or C. ternatea extract for six weeks to study on uterine histomorphology, percentage of pregnancy and offspring development. It was found that the uterus weight to body weight ratio from dam co-administered with BPA and C. ternatea was lower than dam treated with BPA alone, although no histopathological effect was found. However, the percentage of pregnancy and litter size from C. ternatea-fed group were both higher compared to BPA-fed dam. In conclusion, C. ternatea extract showed high antioxidant activity and exert potential protective effects against BPA on the reproduction performance in terms of improving the percentage of pregnancy and litter size.

Telang flower (Clitorea ternatea L) is a type of vine that grows wild in rice fields and has been widely used as food coloring. Telang flowers contain several active compounds, which is anthocyanin gives a blue color. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the telang flower extract as a natural dye to substitute methylenen blue in diff quik painting. The analysis samples used were oral mucosal ephithelial cells which were taken by scraping the oral mucosa using cytobrush. Dried and mashed telang flower was then dissolved with distilled water (1:5) to make an extracts before the trial process of the samples. The results showed that the epithelial cells stained with methylene blue were better than telang flower extract. The immersion time of 15 minutes gave different colors to the cell nucleus and cytoplasm compared to 2 minutes and 5 minutes of immersion.

Silver nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized by employing the aqueous extract of Clitoria ternatea pods as reducing agent. The formation of SNPs was confirmed by a characteristic peak at 418 nm observed in UV–Vis spectrum. Spherical SNPs with few agglomerations were noticed in SEM image. EDS showed elemental silver peak at 3 keV. The crystallinity was confirmed from a strong peak in XRD at 38.58°. The presence of biomolecules was ascertained by specific bands in FTIR spectra. The stability was corroborated by the zeta potential value of −24.6 mV. The first order kinetic constant for the degradation methylene blue was calculated as 0.1448 min −1 .

The effect of Clitoria ternatea flower (CTE) incorporated into cooked rice using domestic cooking methods on starch digestibility was determined. The incorporation of 1.25% and 2.5% (w/v) CTE caused a reduction in the starch digestibility of cooked rice using an electric rice cooker. In addition, there was significant alteration on the starch digestibility of cooked rice incorporated with 2.5% CTE using a microwave oven. Moreover, CTE significantly reduced the level of rapidly digestible starch and increased the level of undigested starch in cooked rice using an electric rice cooker. In the textural characteristics, the hardness of cooked rice with CTE remained unchanged, whereas a reduction in stickiness of cooked rice with CTE was observed. The sensory evaluation of cooked rice with CTE given by panelists demonstrated a good overall acceptability. Overall, the results show that CTE is a useful ingredient to incorporate with cooked rice for reduction of starch digestibility.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (CTNP’s) by Clitoria ternatea flower in the aqueous extract was investigated. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by using UV–Visible spectroscopy, followed by DLS, Zeta potential, XRD, FTIR, SEM, and AFM. The biocompatibility nature of CTNP’s was determined using erythrocytes model system. Cytotoxicity of CTNP’s against MCF-7 and EAC cells were determined by using MTT and Trypan blue exclusion method and their IC50 was found to be 19.37 µg/mL and 24 µg/mL. Cytotoxic potential of CTNP’s was further confirmed by clonogenic assay. Further in vivo studies using EAC mice model supports the anti-cancer potential of silver nanoparticles. Results found that the CTNP’s effectively control the proliferation rate by inhibiting the ascites secretion and cellular density. Further quantification of VEGF, microvessel density counts and CAM assays show the anti-angiogenic potential of the CTNP’s. The apoptotic inducing activity of CTNP’s was confirmed by DNA fragmentation, fluorescent staining studies. More interestingly, EAC treated mice exhibit significant increase in lifespan (~ 2.25 fold) compared to control EAC mice. Interestingly CTNP’s did not exhibit any secondary complications against normal mice. The present findings give an experimental proof that the CTNP’s could serve as a promising candidate to overcome limitations of existing conventional cancer therapeutics.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the nephroprotective & hepatoprotective activity of methanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea in Cisplatin & CCl4 induced in rats Methods: Methanolic extract of aerial part of Clitoria ternatea plant was studied for its Nephroprotective & Hepatoprotective activity in animal experiment models. Nephrotoxicity was induced by Cystone 16 mg/kg b.w . Standard drug was taken Silymarin .Test drug were given methanolic extract Clitoria ternatea 500 mg/kg , 1000 mg/kg . Hepatoxicity was induced by CCl4 .Standard drug was taken cisplatin 100 mg/kg . Test drugs were given extract of Clitoria ternatea 500 mg/kg & 1000 mg/kg as per b.w Results : In Hepatoprotective activity positive control group was provided with CCl4 and increased SGPT , SGOT , ALP level compare to negative control group whereas Test(2) group was provided with methanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea 1000 mg/kg decreased SGPT , SGOT , ALP level compare to standard group. In nephroprotective activity positive control group was provided with CCl4 increased Urea and creatinine level where as Test(2) group are provided with methanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea 1000 mg/kg decreased urea and creatinine level Conclusion: On evaluating biochemical parameters it was found that methanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea 1000 mg/kg showed hepatoprotective and nephroprotective activity in rats. Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a climbing legume grown as a medicinal, ornamental, and forage plant, and used as a natural food colorant. Due to its various medicinal properties in different plant parts, pharmacological potential is evident. However, improvement of the plant for high phytochemical properties has been very limited, hence being pursued. For that improvement effort, butterfly pea germplasm was collected from different parts of Thailand in addition to accessions from 12 other countries acquired from a C. ternatea collection curated by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service National Plant Germplasm System. Characterization and evaluation for phytochemical properties of these germplasm is fundamental for breeding purposes. Floral antioxidant activities (Ferric reducing antioxidant power—FRAP and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl—DPPH), total phenolic compound (TPC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), and ascorbic acid content (AAC) were investigated for 126 individuals from 46 accessions of the combined collection. The plants were regenerated from seeds and grown at Kamphaeng Saen, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, and flowers were harvested in August 2017. Significant differences of TAC and AAC were found among the included accessions. Both variations were correlated with petal color at a moderate level, but not in accordance with geographical locations of the samples. Grouping of the accessions based on antioxidant activities and compounds revealed by cluster and principal component analyses would be useful in the utilization and management of the germplasm for butterfly pea improvement.

The present paper reports a validated high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)—densitometric method for the simultaneous quantification of phenolic (ferulic acid and caffeic acid) and terpenoid (β-sitosterol and lupeol) markers in Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy. According to Ayurveda, it is commonly known as ‘Shankhpushpi’ due to its ‘Conch’ or ‘Shankh’-shape flower. The plant species, viz., Clitoria ternatea L., Evolvulus alsinoides (L.) L., and Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers., also having similar flowers are reported as its adulterants/substitutes. This creates a problem in its quality and efficacy in the commercial drug market of India. Therefore, a HPTLCmethod was performed on a pre-coated silica gel 60 F254 plate with the aforesaid markers. The solvent system toluene—ethyl acetate—formic acid (8.5:1.5:0.1) was determined to be the best system for the simultaneous separation of caffeic acid, ferulic acid, β-sitosterol, and lupeol at RF values of 0.14, 0.29, 0.48, and 0.63, respectively. A densitometric scanning profile of all the samples at 580 nm showed peaks for all the four markers of varying heights in the samples, except the absence of caffeic acid in Tephrosia purpurea. The developed method was standardized and validated for the quantification of active principal-based quality-control markers in terms of precision, accuracy, linearity, recovery, and repeatability. It will help to maintain batch-to-batch consistency and identification of adulterants/substitutes in raw materials during production of drug in the pharmaceutical units.

Background Methylglyoxal (MG) is a highly reactive dicarbonyl precursor for the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) associated with age-related diseases, including diabetes and its complications. Clitoria ternatea L. flower has been reported to possess antioxidant and antiglycating properties. Evidence indicates that the extract of Clitoria ternatea L. flower inhibits fructose-induced protein glycation and oxidative damage to bovine serum albumin (BSA). However, there is no evidence to support the inhibitory effect of CTE against MG-mediated protein glycation and oxidative damage to protein and DNA. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether C. ternatea flower extract (CTE) prevents MG-induced protein glycation and oxidative DNA damage. Methods The formation of fluorescent AGEs in BSA was evaluated using spectrofluorometer. The protein carbonyl and thiol group content were used for detecting protein oxidation. DNA strand breakage in a glycation model comprising of MG, lysine and Cu2+ or a free radical generator 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH) systems was investigated using gel electrophoresis. Generation of superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals in the MG/lysine system was assessed by the cytochrome c reduction assay and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay, respectively. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the MG-trapping ability. Results In the BSA/MG system, CTE (0.25–1 mg/mL) significantly inhibited the formation of fluorescent AGEs and protein oxidation by reducing protein carbonyl content as well as preventing the protein thiol depletion. The concentration of CTE at 0.125–1 mg/mL prevented oxidative DNA cleavage in MG/lysine and AAPH systems associated with the inhibition of superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical formation. It also directly trapped MG in a concentration-dependent manner, ranging from 15 to 43%. Conclusions The study findings suggest that the direct carbonyl trapping ability and the free radical scavenging activity of CTE are the underlying mechanisms responsible for the prevention of protein glycation and oxidative DNA damage.

Clitoria ternatia L. (CT) has been reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study investigated the effect of CT aqueous flower extract on blood pressure and renal alterations in Nω-nitro- l -arginine methyl ester hydrochloride ( l -NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Male Sprague Dawley rats received l -NAME in drinking water and were treated with CT flower extract or lisinopril. CT aqueous flower extract and lisinopril alleviated l -NAME-induced hypertension (p l -NAME-induced hypertensive rats and attenuated by CT flower extract or lisinopril co-treatment (p l -NAME were alleviated by CT flower extract or lisinopril co-treatment (p l -NAME-induced hypertensive rats (p l -NAME-induced renal injury and dysfunction in rats. The possible mechanism may be related to the suppression of Ang II-mediated Nox4 expression and the oxidative stress cascade in rats.

Biodegradable chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) films containing natural anthocyanin-rich extracts were prepared using solvent casting method and employed as intelligent indicators for monitoring beverages freshness. The surface and cross-sectional scanning electron micrograph indicated a compact structure for the intelligent films, whereas the atomic force micrograph indicated a 16.22 and 20.31 nm increase in surface roughness for Clitoria ternatea and Carissa carandas extract incorporated films, respectively. Moreover, the test films demonstrated enhanced radical scavenging efficacy. The extracts and anthocyanin incorporated films presented excellent colorimetric changes at pH 2 to 8. In addition, the C. ternatea test films showed changes in color for juice stored at 25 °C after 72 h. Photo-degradability results indicated stability of test films stored in dark at 4 °C and 25 °C, whereas leaching study indicated the release of ≤2.0% anthocyanin after 24 h. The cytocompatibilty assay showed that the test and control films were biocompatible with a viability of >80% on HaCat cells. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of anthocyanins-rich extracts into chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) did not significantly interfere with the films properties (p > 0.05). The natural anthocyanin incorporated films demonstrated good pH sensing property that could be further explored for monitoring of beverages freshness.

The interactions between whey proteins and delphinidin-based anthocyanins in the water extract of Clitoria ternatea dried flower was investigated by measuring fluorescence quenching of whey powder proteins (WP) and whey protein isolate (WPI) by anthocyanins. Within the temperature range between 35 to 45 °C and buffer pH range between 2.5 to 11.0, the binding of whey proteins with anthocyanins in C. ternatea petal was spontaneous and governed by hydrophobic interactions. The formation of the protein-anthocyanin complex was influenced by the pH and non-protein constituents, i.e. lactose and minerals. In addition to hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions played an important role in the complex formation mechanisms of whey proteins in WP with anthocyanins. Nonetheless, the formation of the protein-anthocyanin complex of proteins in WPI did not involve electrostatic interactions. This investigation indicated the influences of non-protein constituents on the protein and anthocyanin microenvironments, which determined the types and binding strength of non-covalent forces involved in the complex formation. This study also suggested the means for tailoring the binding of delphinidin-based anthocyanin with whey protein via non-covalent forces to formulate macromolecular encapsulation of delphinidin-based anthocyanins by altering the composition of non-protein constituents and pH at the temperature below 45 °C.

In the present study, we propose a novel field-scale analytical tool for rapid screening of microbiological quality in raw milk using aqueous extracts of plant materials, i.e. flowers (e.g. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. and Clitoria ternatea), taproots (e.g. Beta vulgaris) and pricklypears (e.g. Opuntia dillenii). For each plant extract, the colour changes in raw milk were evaluated between 4.5 and 6.5 pH against the resazurin dye as a control. The plant anthocyanin content in each extract was analyzed by the differential pH method using a spectrophotometer. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower extract was opted to further test since it had a pH-sensitive colour change (6.5; maroon to 6.2; light-pink) compared to other plant extracts, which did not indicate a noticeable colour variation with pH. Anthocyanin content of the Hibiscus extract was 0.59 g/mL. The novel method showed high linearity (R2 = 0.95), 100% accuracy and greater repeatability with an intermediate level of precision. The limit of quantification and detection was 0.46 and 0.15 g/mL, respectively. In conclusion, we demonstrated the potential in using water extract of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. flowers as an alternative to the resazurin dye reduction method for rapid and accurate microbiological quality control for raw milk procurement in remote areas.

Toxic organic solvent residues and the active substances of thermal degradation (such as anthocyanin and polyphenols) are always a concern with the liposomes produced by traditional techniques. The present study focuses on a new approach for the microencapsulation of Clitoria ternatea petal (CTP) extracts, which contain anthocyanins, by high-pressure processing (HPP) at room temperature. Thus, a series of CTP liposomes were prepared and their physicochemical properties were analyzed by laser granulometry and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that the average particle size of the liposomes after HPP treatment increased gradually from 300 MPa to 600 MPa, possibly due to the aggregation of liposomes and damage to the phospholipid bilayers. For the preparation of liposomes by the HPP method at 300 MPa, the mean particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and encapsulation efficiency were 240.7 nm, 0.37, and 77.8%, respectively. The HPP method provided a number of advantages over conventional methods (magnet stirring and ultrasonication) as it could allow liposome preparation with higher encapsulation efficiency, smaller size, and narrower, more reproducible particle size distribution. Conclusively, microencapsulation in the liposomes was successfully achieved with the fast-adiabatic expansion of HPP.

Research background. Microbial contamination of food products is one of the significant causes of food spoilage and foodborne illnesses. The use of active packaging films incorporated with antimicrobial agents can be a measure to improve food quality and extend shelf life. Nevertheless, antimicrobial agents such as silver, copper, titanium and zinc in the packaging films have raised concerns among consumers due to toxicity issues. Experimental approach. The current study aims to develop biodegradable gelatine- based edible films incorporated with microcapsules of Clitoria ternatea-derived anthocyanins as a natural antimicrobial agent. The impact of incorporation of microcapsules with anthocyanins on the morphology, thermal, mechanical, water vapour barrier and physicochemical properties of the gelatine films was evaluated in this study. The effectiveness of the developed films against foodborne pathogens and their application for perishable food protection were also investigated. Results and conclusions. The results show that incorporating anthocyanin microcapsules enhances the gelatine film physical and mechanical properties by increasing the thickness, tensile strength, Young’s modulus and elongation at break of the films. Scanning electronic microscopy analysis revealed that the film surface morphology with anthocyanin microcapsules had a homogeneous and smooth surface texture compared to the control. The thermogravimetric analysis also showed a slight improvement in the thermal properties of the developed films. Agar well diffusion assay revealed that the developed films exhibit significant inhibition against a broad-spectrum of bacteria. Furthermore, the films composed of gelatine with anthocyanin microcapsules significantly reduced the total viable count of microorganisms in the bean curd during storage for 12 days compared with the control films. Novelty and scientific contribution. Increasing global awareness of healthy and safe food with minimal synthetic ingredients as preservatives has sparked the search for the use of antimicrobial agents of natural origins in active food packaging material. In this study, a safe and effective active packaging film was developed using an environmentally friendly biopolymer, gelatine film incorporated with microcapsules of Clitoria ternatea-derived anthocyanins as a natural antimicrobial agent. This study demonstrated that such a method is not only able to improve the film physical properties but can also significantly prolong the shelf life of food products by protecting them from microbial spoilage.

Gelatin/agar-based smart and functional freshness indicator films were fabricated using blue anthocyanin and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO). The anthocyanin was extracted from butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower, and ZnO was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method. The butterfly pea anthocyanin (BA) and ZnO were evenly dispersed in the polymer matrix to form a compatible film with the gelatin/agar polymer. The addition of BA and ZnO significantly increased the UV blocking properties and surface hydrophobicity without significant changes in the film's mechanical, thermal stability, and water vapor barrier properties. The BA and BA-added films showed excellent pH-responsive color-change properties as well as good color stability and reversibility. In addition, the composite film showed strong antioxidant and strong bactericidal properties, and the antioxidant function was mainly attributed to the BA, and the antibacterial function was attributed to ZnO. The functional and color indicator film was tested to monitor the freshness of shrimp. It showed distinctive color changes during storage, indicating the degradation of the quality of shrimp accompanied by the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N).

The Orange Spiny Whitefly (OSW) Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) represents a new serious threat to Citrus spp., grapevine and ornamental plants in the whole Mediterranean area. Such threat urgently calls for the development of a sustainable control strategy, including insecticides compatible with biological control, and applicable also in organic citrus farming that represent an essential part of Mediterranean agricultural economy. Therefore, we evaluated the toxicity and the effects on host searching, oviposition, and probing and feeding behavior exerted on OSW by organic insecticides supposed to have limited side effects on environment and ecosystem services, i.e. sweet orange essential oil (EO), extract of Clitoria ternatea (CT), mineral oil, pyrethrin and azadirachtin. Despite none of the compounds caused a significant mortality of any of the OSW instars, we observed interesting effects on whitefly behavior: (i) EO and pyrethrin showed a relevant repellent effect, with impairment of both adults landing and oviposition on treated plants; (ii) CT and pyrethrin strongly affected probing behavior. Here, in the light of our findings, we discuss possible OSW sustainable control strategies and further research perspectives.

— A method consist of co-crystallization, agglomeration, drying has been applied to develop a powder drink from butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) extract. The butterfly pea flower extract was concentrated by vacuum evaporation and incorporated with supersaturated sugar solution (more than 90 Brix), agglomerated and dried at 60oC for 12 hours. The anthocyanin stability and antioxidant activity of the powder drink was evaluated for 28 days at three levels of temperature (room temperature, 40oC, and 50oC). The stability of anthocyanin decreased as the increase of storage temperature. The half-life of anthocyanin in the powder drink at respective temperature was 27.99, 16.53, and 9.81 days. Despite the anthocyanin significantly degraded, the decrease of antioxidant activity of the powder drink was not significant. Hence, the beneficial effect of the butterfly pea powder drink retained. Telang flower, scientifically named Clitoria ternatea, is a wild plant that is commonly found in home yards and is usually treated as decorative flowers. This plant is a group of legumes. Its bright blue colour adds the beauty and bloom of the home yard. In addition to its attractiveness, telang flower has many benefits, they are for eye treatment, anti-depressant, heart health care, also circulation of lipoproteins in the body. Another, telang flower is also used as food or cake colouring. Therefore, it is important to educate public society about the use of telang flower as natural dyes in making cendol starch. The objective of this community service program is to improve public society’s knowledge on the use of telang flower as natural dyes in making cendol starch for society in Datengan Village Grogol District Kediri Regency. The program had been implemented on July 20 to August 30, 2019, located in Datengan Village Grogol District Kediri Regency. Results show that the partner community were very enthusiastic on the use of natural dyes from telang flower in making cendol starch. Based on the questionnaire distributed to the partner community, it reveals that there was a significant improvement on the partner community’s knowledge which reached 90% on the use of natural dyes in making cendol starch.

BackgroundMosquito is a human health tread nowadays, the major health problems caused by them are malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, zika as well as several other outbreaks. The major problem in controlling dengue vectors are the resistant problems. Different classes of insecticides used for public have raised the concern of resistant problem with mosquitoes and environmental pollution. Thus, alternative chemical compounds search is necessary to be searched for overcoming the resistance problem of using pesticides in vectors and the chemical free environment respectively. Thus, to solve these problems, purpose of this study is to identify the larvicidal mechanism, metabolite, antioxidant, chemical compounds and its structure from C. ternatea flower and to test its efficacies against early 4th instar larvae of Ae. aegypti and Ae albopictus.MethodsClitoria ternatea flowers were collected from the Garden of the Faculty of Medicine in International Quest University, Ipoh, Perak and used for crude extraction. Then, the metabolite test, antioxidant test, chromatography techniques were conducted to identify chemical composition of extracts and their chemical structures were identified using GCMS-QP2010 Ultra (Shimadzu). Next, following WHO procedures for larval bioassays, the extracts were used to evaluate against early 4th instar larvae of Aedes mosquito vectors.ResultsThe larvicidal activity of Clitoria ternatea flowers extracts evidently affected the early 4th instar larvae of Aedes mosquito vectors. The highest larvicidal activity was observed against early 4th instar larvae of Ae. aegypti with the LC50 and LC95 values of 1056 and 2491 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile larvae bioassay test for Ae.albopictus recorded with the LC50 and LC95 values of 1425 and 2753 mg/L. Moreover, the results for non target organism test on Guppy fish, Poecilia reticulate showed no mortalities with flower extracts at 2500 mg/L and posses no toxic effects on fish. In this study, total of 16 chemical compounds and 6 chemical compounds have been reported to posse’s direct effects on insecticidal, larvicidal and pupicidal effects. Namely 6 chemicals used for insecticidal properties were Glycerin, 2-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone, Neophytadiene, n-Hexadecanoic acid, cis-Vaccenic acid, and Octadecanoic acid with total of 28.7%. Clitoria ternatea flower extracts also showed different types of phenols such as anthocyanin, flavonoid and tannin.ConclusionsOur findings showed that crude extract of Clitoria ternatea flower bioactive molecules to be effective and may be developed as biolarvicides for Aedes mosquito vector control. Furthermore, this study also provided a baseline understanding for future research work on the field applications of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts which could be tested for its long term effects on other non target organisms, including human health.

The food industry in Indonesia is now a highly developed industry. To increase the attractiveness of consumers, producers make innovations including by adding additional coloring substances into food. There are two types of dyes that are most commonly used, namely synthetic dyes and natural dyes. Synthetic dyes are easy to get, cheap, many choices, but synthetic dye waste is very dangerous for the environment because it cannot be degraded naturally. Therefore, alternatives need to be found to save the environment by using natural dyes. One of the natural dyes can be obtained from the flowers of the plant Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), which contain anthocyanins as natural pigments in the form of blue and red pigments in acidic conditions. Several studies to extract anthocyanin from Butterfly pea have been conducted conventionally or maceration. Another alternative to extracting anthocyanin is the ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) method using water as a solvent has proven to be more efficient. The purpose of this study is to extract butterfly pea flowers by varying the extraction time, temperature and pH as well as the ratio of bait to solvent. The experiment was carried out in a pyrex beaker glass placed in an ultrasonic bath, with the experimental variables: extraction time 30-150 minutes, temperature 30-60 °C, pH 3-11, and the ratio of feed to solvent at 0.02-0.1. Extraction temperature is maintained below 80 °C. The anthocyanin color content was tested using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with wavelength absorption of 500-700 nm. The results showed that the highest anthocyanin concentration was 1,425 g / L at 90 minutes, temperature 60 °C, pH 7, and the ratio of material to solvent was 0.2. From this research it shows that ultrasonic-assisted extraction(UAE) can increase yields higher than conventional extraction methods.

A vine native to India, Sri Lanka, and introduced to Africa, Australia and North America. Sanskrit writers of Ayurveda described root as aperient and diuretic, and used it with other diuretics and laxatives in ascites, and enlargement of abdominal viscera. Root infusion is also used to relieve irritation of bladder and urethra due to its demulcent and diuretic properties. According to Ayurvedic pharmacopeia, dried roots are used in mutraroga, kustha, sotha, vrana, and sula; whereas dried leaves are used in kustha, mutradosa, sotha, vrana, visa, unmada, ardhavabhedaka, sula, grahabadha, amadosa, raktatisara, bhrama, svasa, kasa, jvara, daha and vamana. Some texts described additional clinical uses in Ayurveda as antidote to snake poison, antitubercular, to relieve inflammation, in rheumatism, ear diseases, fever, eye ailments, sore throat and bodyache, and also reportedly used to enhance memory, as a nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, tranquilizing, sedative and anticonvulsant agent. In TCM, it is used to treat infertility, gonorrhea, as emmenagogue and aphrodisiac. Seeds are known as Samsampin in the Philippines, and are used as purgative and aperient. Ternatins (polyacylated delphinidin glucosides) are anthocyanins found in blue petals of flowers; white petal flowers do not contain anthocyanins. Aqueous root extract fed to 7-days old rat pups for 30-days improved retention and spatial learning performance. Memory enhancing, anxiolytic, antidepressant, antistress and anticonvulsant activities of aqueous methanol extract have been reproduced. Alcohol extract of aerial parts and root significantly ameliorated MES-induced amnesia in rats, root extract being more effective. Methanol extracts of leaf and root also exhibit significant analgesic activity in various antinociceptive models. Aqueous extract demonstrated antioxidative, α-glucosidase and pancreatic α-amylase inhibitory activities, justifying its use as antidiabetic plant. Lipid lowering effect is suggested to be due to increased biliary excretion, and decreased absorption of dietary cholesterol.
