We apply molecular simulations to screen a database of reported metal-organic framework structures from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) MOF database to identify materials potentially capable of separating propane and propene by diffusion. We report a screening workflow that uses descriptor analysis, conventional molecular dynamics (MD), and Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) energy barrier calculations at both classical force field and Density Functional Theory (DFT) levels. For the first time, the effects of framework flexibility on guest transport properties were fully considered in a screening process and led to the identification of candidate MOFs. The hits identified by this proof-of-concept workflow include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 previously shown to have large differences in propane and propene diffusivities as well as two other materials that have not been tested experimentally yet. This work emphasises the importance of taking into account framework flexibility when studying guest transport in porous materials, demonstrates the potential of the data-driven identification of high-performance materials and highlights the ways of improving the predictive power of the screening workflow.

Making new van der Waals materials with electronic or magnetic functionality is a chemical design challenge for the development of two-dimensional nanoelectronic and energy conversion devices. We present the synthesis and properties of the van der Waals material Bi4O4SeCl2, which is a 1:1 superlattice of the structural units present in the van der Waals insulator BiOCl and the three-dimensionally connected semiconductor Bi2O2Se. The presence of three anions gives the new structure both the bridging selenide anion sites that connect pairs of Bi2O2 layers in Bi2O2Se and the terminal chloride sites that produce the van der Waals gap in BiOCl. This retains the electronic properties of Bi2O2Se, while reducing the dimensionality of the bonding network connecting the Bi2O2Se units to allow exfoliation of Bi4O4SeCl2 to 1.4 nm height. The superlattice structure is stabilised by the configurational entropy of anion disorder across the terminal and bridging sites. The reduction in connective dimensionality with retention of electronic functionality stems from the expanded anion compositional diversity.

Polymer photocatalysts are a synthetically diverse class of materials that can be used for the production of solar fuels such as H2, but the underlying mechanisms by which they operate are poorly understood. Time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy provides a powerful structure-specific probe of photogenerated species. Here we report the use of time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy to study the formation of polaron pairs and electron polarons in one of the most active linear polymer photocatalysts for H2 production, poly(dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone), P10. We identify that polaron-pair formation prior to thermalization of the initially generated excited states is an important pathway for the generation of long-lived photoelectrons.

We report the aperiodic titanate Ba10Y6Ti4O27 with a room‐temperature thermal conductivity that equals the lowest reported for an oxide. The structure is characterised by discontinuous occupancy modulation of each of the sites and can be considered as a quasicrystal. The resulting localisation of lattice vibrations suppresses phonon transport of heat. This new lead material for low‐thermal‐conductivity oxides is metastable and located within a quaternary phase field that has been previously explored. Its isolation thus requires a precisely defined synthetic protocol. The necessary narrowing of the search space for experimental investigation was achieved by evaluation of titanate crystal chemistry, prediction of unexplored structural motifs that would favour synthetically accessible new compositions, and assessment of their properties with machine‐learning models., Ba10Y6Ti4O27 has a complex aperiodic structure with the lowest thermal conductivity of any first‐transition‐series oxide. It is metastable, which makes it challenging to identify. Experimental exploration was focused sufficiently by structure prediction and property‐targeted machine learning to enable the isolation of this material (see picture), whose structural motifs provide new insight into the control of heat transport.

Conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in water to the linear diketone derivatives 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (HHD) and 2,5-hexanedione (HXD) was investigated over a series of Beta zeolite-supported transition metal catalysts (Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Pd). Their catalytic performance was tested in a batch stirred reactor (T = 110 °C, PH2 = 20 bar) with Pd showing the highest activity and selectivity to HHD and HXD. The effects of Pd particle size, zeolite Si/Al ratio and reaction conditions (T = 80–155 °C, PH2 = 5–60 bar) were also investigated. The incorporation of Pd into Beta zeolite by the deposition-coprecipitation method produced the most efficient catalyst, affording complete HMF conversion (T = 110 °C, PH2 = 60 bar) predominantly to HHD (68% selectivity) and HXD (8% selectivity). The combination of a bifunctional acid/redox solid catalyst and water enhances the hydrolytic ring-opening and subsequent hydrogenation of the furan ring. Catalytic activity can be partially restored by a simple regeneration treatment. This work establishes a catalytic route to produce valuable diketone derivatives from renewable furanic platform sources in water.

Multinary lithium oxides with the rock salt structure are of technological importance as cathode materials in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Current state-of-the-art cathodes such as LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 rely on redox cycling of earth-abundant transition-metal cations to provide charge capacity. Recently, the possibility of using the oxide anion as a redox center in Li-rich rock salt oxides has been established as a new paradigm in the design of cathode materials with enhanced capacities (>200 mAh/g). To increase the lithium content and access electrons from oxygen-derived states, these materials typically require transition metals in high oxidation states, which can be easily achieved using d0 cations. However, Li-rich rock salt oxides with high valent d0 cations such as Nb5+ and Mo6+ show strikingly high voltage hysteresis between charge and discharge, the origin of which is uninvestigated. In this work, we study a series of Li-rich compounds, Li4+ xNi1- xWO6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) adopting two new and distinct cation-ordered variants of the rock salt structure. The Li4.15Ni0.85WO6 (x = 0.15) phase has a large reversible capacity of 200 mAh/g, without accessing the Ni3+/Ni4+ redox couple, implying that more than two-thirds of the capacity is due to anionic redox, with good cyclability. The presence of the 5d0 W6+ cation affords extensive (>2 V) voltage hysteresis associated with the anionic redox. We present experimental evidence for the formation of strongly stabilized localized O-O single bonds that explain the energy penalty required to reduce the material upon discharge. The high valent d0 cation associates localized anion-anion bonding with the anion redox capacity.

Nanoparticle contrast agents are useful tools to label stem cells and monitor the in vivo bio-distribution of labeled cells in pre-clinical models of disease. In this context, understanding the in vivo fate of the particles after injection of labelled cells is important for their eventual clinical use as well as for the interpretation of imaging results. We examined how the formulation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) impacts the labelling efficiency, magnetic characteristics and fate of the particles by comparing individual SPIONs with polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules containing SPIONs. At low labelling concentration, encapsulated SPIONs served as an efficient labelling agent for stem cells. The bio-distribution after intra-cardiac injection of labelled cells was monitored longitudinally by MRI and as an endpoint by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The results suggest that, after being released from labelled cells after cell death, both formulations of particles are initially stored in liver and spleen and are not completely cleared from these organs 2 weeks post-injection.

The piezoelectric devices widespread in society use noncentrosymmetric Pb-based oxides because of their outstanding functional properties. The highest figures of merit reported are for perovskites based on the parent Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN), which is a relaxor: a centrosymmetric material with local symmetry breaking that enables functional properties, which resemble those of a noncentrosymmetric material. We present the Pb-free relaxor (K1/2Bi1/2)(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (KBMN), where the thermal and (di)electric behavior emerges from the discrete structural roles of the s0 K+ and s2 Bi3+ cations occupying the same A site in the perovskite structure, as revealed by diffraction methods. This opens a distinctive route to Pb-free piezoelectrics based on relaxor parents, which we demonstrate in a solid solution of KBMN with the Pb-free ferroelectric (K1/2Bi1/2)TiO3, where the structure and function evolve together, revealing a morphotropic phase boundary, as seen in PMN-derived systems. The detailed multiple-length-scale understanding of the functional behavior of KBMN suggests that precise chemical manipulation of the more diverse local displacements in the Pb-free relaxor will enhance performance.

Energy-efficient approaches to propylene/propane separation such as molecular sieving are of considerable importance for the petrochemical industry. The metal organic framework NbOFFIVE-1-Ni adsorbs propylene but not propane at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, whereas the isostructural SIFSIX-3-Ni does not exclude propane under the same conditions. The static dimensions of the pore openings of both materials are too small to admit either guest, signalling the importance of host dynamics for guest entrance to and transport through the channels. We use ab initio calculations together with crystallographic and adsorption data to show that the dynamics of the two framework-forming units, polyatomic anions and pyrazines, govern both diffusion and separation. The guest diffusion occurs by opening of the flexible window formed by four pyrazines. In NbOFFIVE-1-Ni, (NbOF5)2− anion reorientation locates propane away from the window, which enhances propylene/propane separation., Porous materials acting as molecular sieves for propylene/propane separation are important for the petrochemical industry. Here the authors show an example of how specific guest-host interactions can result in structural changes in the porous host and shut down diffusion of one of the two similar guest molecules.

The products of the solid-state reactions between potassium metal and tetracene (K:Tetracene, 1:1, 1.5:1, and 2:1) are fully structurally characterized. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction shows that only K2Tetracene forms under the reaction conditions studied, with unreacted tetracene always present for x < 2. Diffraction and 13C MAS NMR show that K2Tetracene has a crystal structure that is analogous to that of K2Pentacene, but with the cations ordered on two sites because of the influence of the length of the hydrocarbon on possible cation positions. K2Tetracene is a nonmagnetic insulator, thus further questioning the nature of reported superconductivity in this class of materials., Potassium intercalated tetracene, K2Tetracene, is synthesized and its crystal structure solved and refined from powder data. The crystal chemistry of the K2Tetracene phase contrasts clearly with that of the other alkali metal intercalated polyaromatic hydrocarbons structures reported to date in a way that can be directly related to the molecular structure of tetracene in that the cations cannot be disordered due to fewer sites present in the structure compared to other PAHs studied.

Mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs) that display high oxide ion conductivity (σo ) and electronic conductivity (σe ) constitute an important family of electrocatalysts for a variety of applications including fuel cells and oxygen separation membranes. Often MIECs exhibit sufficient σe but inadequate σo . It has been a long-standing challenge to develop MIECs with both high σo and stability under device operation conditions. For example, the well-known perovskite oxide Ba0.5 Sr0.5 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (BSCF) exhibits exceptional σo and electrocatalytic activity. The reactivity of BSCF with CO2 , however, limits its use in practical applications. Here, the perovskite oxide Bi0.15 Sr0.85 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (BiSCF) is shown to exhibit not only exceptional bulk transport properties, with a σo among the highest for known MIECs, but also high CO2 tolerance. When used as an oxygen separation membrane, BiSCF displays high oxygen permeability comparable to that of BSCF and much higher stability under CO2 . The combination of high oxide transport properties and CO2 tolerance in a single-phase MIEC gives BiSCF a significant advantage over existing MIECs for practical applications.

Both layered multiple-anion compounds and homologous series are of interest for their electronic properties, including the ability to tune the properties by changing the nature or number of the layers. Here we expand, using both computational and experimental techniques, a recently reported three-anion material, Bi4O4Cu1.7Se2.7Cl0.3, to the homologous series Bi2+2nO2+2nCu2−δSe2+n–δXδ (X = Cl, Br), composed of parent blocks that are well-studied thermoelectric materials. All of the materials show exceptionally low thermal conductivity (0.2 W/mK and lower) parallel to the axis of pressing of the pellets, as well as narrow band gaps (as low as 0.28 eV). Changing the number of layers affects the band gap, thermal conductivity, carrier type, and presence of a phase transition. Furthermore, the way in which the different numbers of layers are accessed, by tuning the compensating Cu vacancy concentration and halide substitution, represents a novel route to homologous series. Crabtree's catalyst was encapsulated inside the pores of the sulfonated MIL‐101(Cr) metal–organic framework (MOF) by cation exchange. This hybrid catalyst is active for the heterogeneous hydrogenation of non‐functionalized alkenes either in solution or in the gas phase. Moreover, encapsulation inside a well‐defined hydrophilic microenvironment enhances catalyst stability and selectivity to hydrogenation over isomerization for substrates bearing ligating functionalities. Accordingly, the encapsulated catalyst significantly outperforms its homogeneous counterpart in the hydrogenation of olefinic alcohols in terms of overall conversion and selectivity, with the chemical microenvironment of the MOF host favouring one out of two competing reaction pathways.

Phonon-glass electron-crystal (PGEC) behaviour is realised in La0.5Na0.5Ti1-xNbxO3 thermoelectric oxides. The vibrational disorder imposed by the presence of both La3+ and Na+ cations on the A site of the ABO(3) perovskite oxide La0.5Na0.5TiO3 produces a phononglass with a thermal conductivity, kappa, 80% lower than that of SrTiO3 at room temperature. Unlike other state-of-the-art thermoelectric oxides, where there is strong coupling of kappa to the electronic power factor, the electronic transport of these materials can be optimised independently of the thermal transport through cation substitution at the octahedral B site. The low kappa of the phonon-glass parent is retained across the La0.5Na0.5Ti1-xNbxO3 series without disrupting the electronic conductivity, affording PGEC behaviour in oxides.

The production of cyclopentanone derivatives from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using non-noble metal based catalysts is reported for the first time. Five different mixed oxides containing Ni, Cu, Co, Zn and Mg phases on an Al-rich amorphous support were prepared and characterised (XRD, ICP, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, NH3/CO2-TPD and N2 sorption). The synthesised materials resulted in well-dispersed high metal loadings in a mesoporous network, exhibiting acid/base properties. The catalytic performance was tested in a batch stirred reactor under H2 pressure (20–50 bar) in the range T = 140–180 °C. The Cu–Al2O3 and the Co–Al2O3 catalysts showed a highly selective production of 3-hydroxymethylcyclopentanone (HCPN, 86%) and 3-hydroxymethylcyclopentanol (HCPL, 94%), respectively. A plausible reaction mechanism is proposed, clarifying the role of the reduced metal phases and the acid/basic sites on the main conversion pathways. Both Cu–Al2O3 and Co–Al2O3 catalysts showed a loss of activity after the first run, which can be reversed by a regeneration treatment. The results establish an efficient catalytic route for the production of the diol HCPL (reported for the first time) and the ketone HCPN from bio-derived HMF over 3d transition metals based catalysts in an environmental friendly medium such as water.

A new porous and flexible metal–organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from the flexible asymmetric linker N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamate (CSA) and heptanuclear zinc oxo-clusters of formula [Zn7O2(carboxylate)10DMF2] involving two coordinated terminal DMF ligands. The structural response of this MOF to the removal or exchange of its guest molecules has been probed using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. The topology of the material, involving double linker connections in the a and b directions and single linker connections along the c axis, is shown to be key in the material’s anisotropic response. The a and b directions remain locked during guest removal, whereas the c axis linker undergoes large changes significantly reducing the material’s void space. The changes to the c axis linker involve a combination of a hinge motion on the linker’s rigid side and conformational rearrangements on its flexible end, which were probed in detail during this process despite the presence of crystallographic disorder along this axis, which prevented accurate characterization by experimental methods alone. Although inactive during guest removal, the flexible ends of the a and b axis linkers are observed to play a prominent role during DMF to DMSO solvent exchange, facilitating the exchange reaction arising in the cluster., The synthesis and flexibility of a new zinc-carboxylate MOF (ZnCSA) is reported via a combination of crystallographic and computational approaches. The anisotropic structural response exhibited during exchange or removal of the guest species in the pore reveals that the behavior is linked to both the framework’s topology and the nature of the asymmetric flexible linker used in its construction.

6,6′,13,13′- tetrahydro-6,6′-bipentacene (HBP), the first intermediate molecule between pentacene and peripentacene and extended pentacene oligomers, is synthesised and crystallographically characterised for the first time. Heating pentacene to 300 oC under vacuum for 200 hours results in pale golden crystals of HBP and amorphous material containing pentacene oligomers, and is the first experimental evidence that pentacene preferentially dimerises at the 6,6′- position. Continued heating of HBP results in co-crystals of 6,13-dihydrogenated pentacene (HP) and pentacene and further amorphous pentacene oligomers. The amorphous material consists of layered carbonaceous species with a graphenic nature, as determined by Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy, and shows the importance of HBP as an intermediate to hydrogenated pentacene species and pentacene oligomers. The synthesis of HBP from pentacene could be useful as a starting material in the rational synthesis of peripentacene towards organic electronic devices.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely used as contrast agents for stem cell tracking using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The total mass of iron oxide that can be internalised into cells without altering their viability or phenotype is an important criterion for the generation of contrast, with SPIONs designed for efficient labelling of stem cells allowing for an increased sensitivity of detection. Although changes in the ratio of polymer and iron salts in co-precipitation reactions are known to affect the physicochemical properties of SPIONs, particularly core size, the effects of these synthesis conditions on stem cell labelling and magnetic resonance (MR) contrast have not been established. Here, we synthesised a series of cationic SPIONs with very similar hydrodynamic diameters and surface charges, but different polymer content. We have investigated how the amount of polymer in the co-precipitation reaction affects core size and modulates not only the magnetic properties of the SPIONs but also their uptake into stem cells. SPIONs with the largest core size and lowest polymer content presented the highest magnetisation and relaxivity. These particles also had the greatest uptake efficiency without any deleterious effect on either the viability or function of the stem cells. However, for all particles internalised in cells, the T2 and T2* relaxivity was independent of the SPION's core size. Our results indicate that the relative mass of iron taken up by cells is the major determinant of MR contrast generation and suggest that the extent of SPION uptake can be regulated by the amount of polymer used in co-precipitation reactions. It is challenging to achieve p-type doping of zinc oxides (ZnO), which are of interest as transparent conductors in optoelectronics. A ZnO-related ternary compound, SrZnO2, was investigated as a potential host for p-type conductivity. First-principles investigations were used to select from a range of candidate dopants the substitution of Li+ for Zn2+ as a stable, potentially p-type, doping mechanism in SrZnO2. Subsequently, single-phase bulk samples of a new p-type-doped oxide, SrZn1–xLixO2 (0 < x < 0.06), were prepared. The structural, compositional, and physical properties of both the parent SrZnO2 and SrZn1–xLixO2 were experimentally verified. The band gap of SrZnO2 was calculated using HSE06 at 3.80 eV and experimentally measured at 4.27 eV, which confirmed the optical transparency of the material. Powder X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma analysis were combined to show that single-phase ceramic samples can be accessed in the compositional range x < 0.06. SPIONs consisting predominantly of magnetite or maghemite display distinct chemical stability in solution but equivalent imaging properties when in cells., Although there is extensive literature covering the biomedical applications of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), the phase of the iron oxide core used is not often taken into account when cell labelling and tracking studies for regenerative medicine are considered. Here, we use a co-precipitation reaction to synthesise particles of both magnetite- (Fe3O4) and maghemite- (γ-Fe2O3) based cores and consider whether the extra synthesis step to make maghemite based particles is advantageous for cell tracking.

Tracking stem cells in vivo using non-invasive techniques is critical to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stem cell therapies. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) enable cells to be tracked using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but to obtain detectable signal cells need to be labelled with a sufficient amount of iron oxide. For the majority of SPIONs, this can only be obtained with the use of transfection agents, which can adversely affect cell health. Here, we have synthesised a library of dextran-based polymer coated SPIONs with varying surface charge from -1.5 mV to +18.2 mV via a co-precipitation approach and investigated their ability to be directly internalised by stem cells without the need for transfection agents. The SPIONs were colloidally stable in physiological solutions. The crystalline phase of the particles was confirmed with powder X-ray diffraction and their magnetic properties were characterised using SQUID magnetometry and magnetic resonance. Increased surface charge led to six-fold increase in uptake of particles into stem cells and higher MRI contrast, with negligible change in cell viability. Cell tracking velocimetry was shown to be a more accurate method for predicting MRI contrast of stem cells compared to measuring iron oxide uptake through conventional bulk iron quantification.

Abstarct Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are network polymers with long-range positional order whose properties can be tuned using the isoreticular chemistry approach. Making COFs from strong bonds is challenging because irreversible rapid formation of the network produces amorphous materials with locked-in disorder. Reversibility in bond formation is essential to generate ordered networks, as it allows the error-checking that permits the network to crystallise, and so candidate network-forming chemistries such as amide that are irreversible under conventional low temperature bond-forming conditions have been underexplored. Here we show that we can prepare two- and three-dimensional covalent amide frameworks (CAFs) by devitrification of amorphous polyamide network polymers using high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions. In this way we have accessed reversible amide bond formation that allows crystalline order to develop. This strategy permits the direct synthesis of practically irreversible ordered amide networks that are stable thermally and under both strong acidic and basic hydrolytic conditions., Irreversible bond formation in covalent organic frameworks leads to amorphous materials. Here, the authors show that crystalline and ultra-stable covalent amide frameworks can be accessed by devitrification of amorphous polyamide networks.

Electrode materials for intermediate temperature (500–700 ∘C) solid oxide fuel cells require electrical and mechanical stability to maintain performance during the cell lifetime. This has proven difficult to achieve for many candidate cathode materials and their derivatives with good transport and electrocatalytic properties because of reactivity towards cell components, and the fuels and oxidants. Here we present Ba0.5Sr0.5(Co0.7Fe0.3)0.6875W0.3125O3−δ (BSCFW), a self-assembled composite prepared through simple solid state synthesis, consisting of B-site cation ordered double perovskite and disordered single perovskite oxide phases, as a candidate cathode material. These phases interact by dynamic compositional change at the operating temperature, promoting both chemical stability through the increased amount of W in the catalytically active single perovskite provided from the W-reservoir double perovskite, and microstructural stability through reduced sintering of the supported catalytically active phase. This interactive catalyst-support system enabled stable high electrochemical activity through the synergic integration of the distinct properties of the two phases. Electrodes of solid oxide fuel cells need to be stable during operation. Here, the authors use tungsten as a substituent to stabilize a perovskite oxide as a two-phase composite. The resulting material dynamically adjusts the phase compositions to keep a high catalytic activity at operation conditions.

Two new amide functionalised metal–organic frameworks, In(OH)CSA and In(OH)PDG, were synthesized using two flexible linkers, N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamic acid (CSA) and N,N′-(1,4-phenylenedicarbonyl)diglycine (PDG), respectively. Both structures consist of corner-sharing {InO4(OH)2} octahedra in the form of trans indium hydroxide chains, which are interconnected by the dicarboxylate linkers to form stacked 2-dimensional layers. The different symmetries and configurations of the flexible and rigid features on the linkers results in different supramolecular interactions dominating between linkers, resulting in different shaped pores and functional group orientation. In(OH)CSA lacks hydrogen bonding between linkers, which results in close packing between the layers and very small solvent accessible pores running perpendicular to the plane of the layers. In(OH)PDG exhibits strong intra- and interlayer hydrogen bonding, which prevents the layers from close packing and results in larger cylindrical pores running parallel to the indium hydroxide chains, producing a total accessible volume of 25% of the unit cell volume.

Correlated metallic transition metal oxides offer a route to thin film transparent conductors that is distinct from the degenerate doping of broadband wide gap semiconductors. In a correlated metal transparent conductor, interelectron repulsion shifts the plasma frequency out of the visible region to enhance optical transmission, while the high carrier density of a metal retains sufficient conductivity. By exploiting control of the filling, position, and width of the bands derived from the B site transition metal in ABO3 perovskite oxide films, it is shown that pulsed laser deposition-grown films of cubic SrMoO3 and orthorhombic CaMoO3 based on the second transition series cation 4d2 Mo4+ have superior transparent conductor properties to those of the first transition series 3d1 V4+-based SrVO3. The increased carrier concentration offered by the greater bandfilling in the molybdates gives higher conductivity while retaining sufficient correlation to keep the plasma edge below the visible region. The reduced binding energy of the n=4 frontier orbitals in the second transition series materials shifts the energies of oxide 2p to metal nd transitions into the near-ultraviolet to enhance visible transparency. The A site size-driven rotation of MoO6 octahedra in CaMoO3 optimizes the balance between plasma frequency and conductivity for transparent conductor performance.

A porphyrin-based metal-organic framework is shown to be structurally stable towards acid loading using either hydrochloric or formic acid. The capacity of this material as an ammonia sorbent was analysed using micro-breakthrough experiments in both dry and humid ammonia flows. The acid loaded material exhibited excellent uptake in comparison with the parent MOF.

Iron (II,III) oxide Fe3O4 nanoparticles (25 and 50 nm NPs) are grafted with amine groups through silanization in order to generate a positively charged coating for binding negatively charged species including DNA molecules. The spatial nature of the coating changes from a 2-D-functionalized surface (monoamines) through a layer of amine oligomers (diethylenetriamine or DETA, about 1 nm in length) to a 3-D layer of polyamine (polyethyleneimine or PEI, thickness ≥3.5 nm). These Fe3O4-PEI NPs were prepared by binding short-chain PEI polymers to the iodopropyl groups grafted on the NP surface. In this work, the surface charge density, or zeta potential, of the nanoparticles is found not to be the only factor influencing the DNA binding capacity, which also seems not to be affected by their buffering capacity profile in the range of pH 4-10. This study also allows the investigation of this 3-D effect on the surface of a nanoparticle as opposed to conventional 2-D amine functionalization. The flexibility of the PEI coating, which consists of only 1, 2, and 3° amines, on the nanoparticle surface has a significant influence on the overall DNA binding capacity and the binding efficiency (or N/P ratio). These polyamine-functionalized nanoparticles can be used in the purification of biomolecules and the delivery of drugs and large biomolecules.

Modules of Desire Using computational methods to design materials with specific properties has found some limited success. Dyer et al. (p. 847 , published online 11 April) have devised a method, based on extended module materials assembly, that combines chemical intuition and ab initio calculations starting from fragments or modules of structure types that show the desired functionality. The method was tested by identifying materials suitable for a solid oxide fuel cell cathode.

The new Fe(3+) oxide BaFe9LiO15 is isostructural with the magnetically frustrated material BaV10O15, adopting a structure based on the stacking of close-packed pure oxide and BaO7 layers. Neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that BaFe9LiO15 is long-range antiferromagnetically ordered with a Néel temperature of 460 K. The magnetic ordering of antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic planes is stabilized by 90° and 180° superexchange interactions between the Fe(3+) cations that supersede the frustrated in-plane direct exchange observed in t(2g)-only systems.

Alkali metal intercalation into polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been studied intensely after reports of superconductivity in a number of potassium- and rubidium-intercalated materials. There are, however, no reported crystal structures to inform our understanding of the chemistry and physics because of the complex reactivity of PAHs with strong reducing agents at high temperature. Here we present the synthesis of crystalline K2Pentacene and K2Picene by a solid–solid insertion protocol that uses potassium hydride as a redox-controlled reducing agent to access the PAH dianions, and so enables the determination of their crystal structures. In both cases, the inserted cations expand the parent herringbone packings by reorienting the molecular anions to create multiple potassium sites within initially dense molecular layers, and thus interact with the PAH anion π systems. The synthetic and crystal chemistry of alkali metal intercalation into PAHs differs from that into fullerenes and graphite, in which the cation sites are pre-defined by the host structure.

We present the synthesis and structural characterisation of a transition metal oxide hydride, LaSrCoO_3H_{0.7}, which adopts an unprecedented structure in which oxide chains are bridged by hydride anions to form a two- dimensional extended network. The metal centers are strongly coupled by their bonding with both oxide and hydride ligands to produce magnetic ordering up to at least 350 K. The synthetic route is sufficiently general to allow the prediction of a new class of transition metal-containing electronic and magnetic materials., Comment: 6 pages, including 3 figures

Despite significant structural rearrangement upon desolvation of a three-dimensional molecular framework of hexaaquacobalt cations and redox- active functionalized tetrathiafulvalene anions (see the picture; the area filled with water molecules is shown in gray), monocrystallinity and microporosity are retained. X-ray analyses show that a unique combination of hydrogen bonds and π ·· π interactions within the framework gives this material a structural flexibility not seen in zeolites or their analogues.

The capability of sodium hydride as a reducing agent in oxide deintercalation reactions is explored. The Ni(III) perovskite LaNiO3 can be reduced topotactically to LaNiO2, isostructural with the 'infinite layer' cuprates, using solid sodium hydride in a sealed evacuated tube at 190 ≤ T/°C ≤ 210, and a similar infinite-layer phase is prepared by reduction of NdNiO3. Structural characterization indicates the coexistence of incompletely reduced regions, with five-coordinate Ni centers due to the introduction of oxide anions between the NiO23- sheets, giving samples with a refined stoichiometry of LaNiO(2.025(3)). Neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements indicate that the lamellar Ni(I) phase does not show the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering characteristic of isoelectronic Cu(II) oxides. This may be due either to the influence of the interlamellar oxide defect regions or to the reduced covalent mixing of Ni 3d and O 2p levels.

The perovskite- and K2NiF4-structure group 5 oxynitrides SrTaO2N, BaTaO2N, Sr2TaO3N, and Ba2TaO3N, previously prepared by reacting oxide precursors with ammonia, may also be prepared by the reaction between the appropriate alkaline earth oxide and TaON at 1500°C under 1 atm of pure nitrogen gas for a few hours. The nitrogen atmosphere is essential to prevent reduction of TaV, and the method of inductive heating ensures that the nitrogen atmosphere above the sample is maintained free of oxygen or water. SrTaO2N crystallizes in I4/mcm with a = 5.694 11(7) Å, b = 8.0658(2) Å, and Z = 4. The oxide and nitride anions are almost completely disordered, as observed when the material is made by nitridation of a pure oxide precursor using ammonia at 900-1000°C, but contrasting with the full O/N order observed when such nitridation is mineralizer assisted. The detailed structure of Ba2TaO3N is reported for the first time: this compound adopts the K2NiF4 type structure with full O/N order in space group I4/mmm with a = 4.115 08(3) Å, c = 13.3778(1) Å, and Z = 2 and is isostructural with the strontium analogue (Sr2TaO3N: I4/mmm, a = 4.038 99(4) Å, c = 12.6007(3) Å, and Z = 2). O/N disorder is favored in perovskite-structure oxynitrides, but in layered K2NiF4-structure materials O/N ordering is the norm, with the ordering scheme dictated by the competition between cations of differing electronegativity for the anions.

Ammonolysis of reactive oxide precursors affords the vanadium(V) phase Ba(2)VO(3)N that is shown by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to contain pseudotetrahedral VO(3)N(4-) anions. This is the first example of such species for the first transition series metals.

The catalytic response of Ni on Al2O3 obtained from Ni-Al layered double hydroxides was studied for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of hydroxymethyl furfural to tetrahydrofuran-2,5-diyldimethanol (THFDM) in water. The successive calcination and reduction of the precursors caused the removal of interlayer hydroxyl and carbonate groups and the reduction of Ni(2+) to Ni(0). Four reduced mixed oxide catalysts were obtained, consisting of different amount of Ni metal contents (47-68 wt%) on an Al-rich amorphous component. The catalytic activity was linked to Ni content whereas selectivity was mainly affected by reaction temperature. THFDM was formed in a stepwise manner at low temperature (353 K) whereas 3-hydroxymethyl cyclopentanone was generated at higher temperature. Coke formation caused deactivation; however, the catalytic activity can be regenerated using heat treatment. The results establish Ni on Al2O3 as a promising catalyst for the production of THFDM in water.

Interfaces between different materials underpin both new scientific phenomena, such as the emergent behaviour at oxide interfaces, and key technologies, such as that of the transistor. Control of the interfaces between materials with the same crystal structures but different chemical compositions is possible in many materials classes, but less progress has been made for oxide materials with different crystal structures. We show that dynamical self-organization during growth can create a coherent interface between the perovskite and fluorite oxide structures, which are based on different structural motifs, if an appropriate choice of cations is made to enable this restructuring. The integration of calculation with experimental observation reveals that the interface differs from both the bulk components and identifies the chemical bonding requirements to connect distinct oxide structures.

Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials that have emerged as promising hosts\ud for the heterogenization of homogeneous organometallic catalysts, forming hybrid materials which\ud combine the benefits of both classes of catalysts. Herein, we report the encapsulation of the\ud organometallic cationic Lewis acidic catalyst [CpFe(CO)2(L)]+ ([Fp–L]+, Cp ¼ h5\ud -C5H5, L ¼ weakly bound\ud solvent) inside the pores of the anionic [Et4N]3[In3(BTC)4] MOF (H3BTC ¼ benzenetricarboxylic acid) via\ud a direct one-step cation exchange process. To conclusively validate this methodology, initially [Cp2Co]+\ud was used as an inert spatial probe to (i) test the stability of the selected host; (ii) monitor the\ud stoichiometry of the cation exchange process and (iii) assess pore dimensions, spatial location of the\ud cationic species and guest-accessible space by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Subsequently,\ud the quasi-isosteric [Fp–L]+ was encapsulated inside the pores via partial cation exchange to form\ud [(Fp–L)0.6(Et4N)2.4][In3(BTC)4]. The latter was rigorously characterized and benchmarked as\ud a heterogeneous catalyst in a simple Diels–Alder reaction, thus verifying the integrity and reactivity of\ud the encapsulated molecular catalyst. These results provide a platform for the development of\ud heterogeneous catalysts with chemically and spatially well-defined catalytic sites by direct exchange\ud of cationic catalysts into anionic MOFs.

We have impregnated chromium(III) onto a high surface area particulate niobium oxide to make bulk oxide–oxide interfaces, identifying by a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance the exact energy of the metal-to-metal charge transfer transition that is responsible for the visible light photocatalytic decomposition of methyl orange.

Gold and gold alloys, in the form of supported nanoparticles, have been shown over the last three decades to be highly effective oxidation catalysts. Mixed metal oxide perovskites, with their high structural tolerance, are ideal for investigating how changes in the chemical composition of supports affect the catalysts' properties, while retaining similar surface areas, morphologies and metal co-ordinations. However, a significant disadvantage of using perovskites as supports is their high crystallinity and small surface area. We report the use of a supercritical carbon dioxide anti-solvent precipitation methodology to prepare large surface area lanthanum based perovskites, making the deposition of 1 wt% AuPt nanoparticles feasible. These catalysts were used for the selective oxidation of glycerol. By changing the elemental composition of the perovskite B site, we dramatically altered the reaction pathway between a sequential oxidation route to glyceric or tartronic acid and a dehydration reaction pathway to lactic acid. Selectivity profiles were correlated to reported oxygen adsorption capacities of the perovskite supports and also to changes in the AuPt nanoparticle morphologies. Extended time on line analysis using the best oxidation catalyst (AuPt/LaMnO3) produced an exceptionally high tartronic acid yield. LaMnO3 produced from alternative preparation methods was found to have lower activities, but gave comparable selectivity profiles to that produced using the supercritical carbon dioxide anti-solvent precipitation methodology.

The coordination of benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate (BTB) and imidazole (Im) with cobalt under basic conditions yields a 2D layered structure, Co 3 (BTB) 1.5 (Im) 1.35 (O) 0.5 (OH) 0.5 (H 2 O) 1.65 guests ( 1 ), in which the imidazoles are weakly π–π stacked and hydrogen bonded to the adjacent layers affording a 3D supramolecular network. The structure is based on a hexanuclear Co 6 building unit which comprises four octahedral and two tetrahedral Co(II) centres. The framework is permanently porous to N 2 , CO 2 and CH 4 , with the strength of interaction at zero coverage being comparable to that at high loading.

Combining long-range magnetic order with polarity in the same structure is a prerequisite for the design of (magnetoelectric) multiferroic materials. There are now several demonstrated strategies to achieve this goal, but retaining magnetic order above room temperature remains a difficult target. Iron oxides in the +3 oxidation state have high magnetic ordering temperatures due to the size of the coupled moments. Here we prepare and characterize ScFeO3 (SFO), which under pressure and in strain-stabilized thin films adopts a polar variant of the corundum structure, one of the archetypal binary oxide structures. Polar corundum ScFeO3 has a weak ferromagnetic ground state below 356 K-this is in contrast to the purely antiferromagnetic ground state adopted by the well-studied ferroelectric BiFeO3.

The auto-reduction of copper and manganese acetates has been investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis, with the intention of manipulating the phenomena to tailor specific phase formation for synthesising catalysts. Subsequently catalysts prepared in this controlled manner were evaluated for ambient temperature CO oxidation. The decomposition of mixed copper and manganese acetate systems was controlled to form MnO x-supported Cu or CuMnOx spinel structures, depending on the oxygen concentration and flow conditions during the heat treatment. Catalyst precursors were prepared by physical grinding and by a supercritical CO 2 anti-solvent precipitation process. The use of supercritical anti-solvent precipitation allows for the formation of well-mixed metal acetates that decompose to form active spinel CO-oxidation catalysts or small copper nano-particles supported on MnOx, depending on the oxygen content of the heat treatment atmosphere. The ability to tune oxidation state and phase composition of catalysts is a key preparation parameter for controlling the activity and provides insight into the active sites for CO oxidation. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. BACKGROUND: This research investigated the effect of platinum (Pt) on the reactivity of tungsten oxide (WO3) for the visible light photocatalytic oxidation of dyes. RESULTS: Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide (WO3) photocatalysts were synthesised by a sol-gel process and employed for the photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Orange under visible light. For comparison commercial bulk WO3 materials were also studied for the same reaction. These materials were fully characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic oxidation of iso-propanol was used as a model reaction to follow the concomitant reduction of molecular oxygen. No reactions occured in the absence of platinum, which is an essential co-catalyst for the multi-electron reduction of oxygen. The platinised WO3 catalysts were stable for multiple oxidation–reduction cycles. The results from the catalytic activity measurements showed that platinised nanocrystalline WO3 is a superior oxidation photocatalyst when compared with bulk WO3. Methyl Orange was completely decolourised in 4 h. CONCLUSIONS: The enhanced performance of nanocrystalline Pt-WO3 is attributed to improved charge separation in the nanosized photocatalyst. Platinum is an essential co-catalyst to reduce oxygen. This photocatalyst could be applied to the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater, with the advantage of using visible light compared with the widely studied TiO2, which requires UV light. The (AO)(ABO3)n Ruddlesden-Popper structure is an archetypal complex oxide consisting of two distinct structural units, an (AO) rock salt layer separating an n-octahedra thick perovskite block. Conventional high-temperature oxide synthesis methods cannot access members with n > 3, but low-temperature layer-by-layer thin film methods allow the preparation of materials with thicker perovskite blocks, exploiting high surface mobility and lattice matching with the substrate. This paper describes the growth of an n = 6 member CaO[(CSMO)2(LCMO)2 (CSMO)2] in which the six unit cell perovskite block is sub-divided into two central La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) and two terminal Ca0.85Sm0.15MnO3 (CSMO) layers to allow stabilization of the rock salt layer and variation of the transition metal charge.

Ba1.6Ca2.3Y1.1Fe5O13 is an Fe3+ oxide adopting a complex perovskite superstructure, which is an ordered intergrowth between the Ca2Fe2O5 and YBa2Fe3O8 structures featuring octahedral, square pyramidal, and tetrahedral B sites and three distinct A site environments. The distribution of A site cations was evaluated by combined neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Consistent with the Fe3+ charge state, the material is an antiferromagnetic insulator with a Neel temperature of 480−485 °C and has a relatively low d.c. conductivity of 2.06 S cm−1 at 700 °C. The observed area specific resistance in symmetrical cell cathodes with the samarium-doped ceria electrolyte is 0.87 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, consistent with the square pyramidal Fe3+ layer favoring oxide ion formation and mobility in the oxygen reduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations reveal factors favoring the observed cation ordering and its influence on the electronic structure, in particular the frontier occupied and unoccupied electronic states.

Amino acid-functionalized Ni 4 (OH) 3 Cl tetrahedral clusters containing peptide linkages are linked into hexagonal planes connected pairwise into layers by neutral linkers. These layers stack to afford an open-framework structure, with large cavities occupied by non-ice-geometry (H 2 O) 16 clusters. The layer stacking motif and the guest cluster geometry are both determined by an intricate hierarchy of hydrogen-bonding interactions defined by the array of peptides supported by the tetrahedral units. The (H 2 O) 16 cluster adopts a non-ice-like structure due to the resulting highly symmetrical arrangement ofthe amide groups around the water molecules and the participation of two hydroxide anions per cluster.
