Diethyl ether (DEE) has been proposed as a biofuel additive for compression-ignition engines, as an ignition improver for homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines, and as a suitable component for dual-fuel mixtures in reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engines. The combustion in these engines is significantly controlled by low-temperature (LT) chemistry. Fundamental studies of DEE LT oxidation chemistry and of its influence in fuel-mixture oxidation are thus highly important, especially at elevated pressures. Elevated pressure speciation data were measured for the LT oxidation of DEE, of its similarly-structured linear five-heavy-atom hydrocarbon fuel (n-pentane), and of a mixture of the two fuels in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) in the temperature range of 400–1100 K and at various pressures up to 10 bar. The pressure influence on the LT oxidation chemistry of DEE was investigated by a comparison of the measured profiles of oxidation products. The results for DEE and n-pentane were then inspected with regard to fuel structure influences on the LT oxidation behavior. The new speciation data were used to test recent kinetic models for these fuels [Tran et al., Proc. Combust. Inst. 37 (2019) 511 and Bugler et al., Proc. Combust. Inst. 36 (2017) 441]. The models predict the major features of the LT chemistry of these fuels well and could thus subsequently assist in the data interpretation. Finally, the LT oxidation behavior of an equimolar mixture of the two fuels was explored. The interaction between the two fuels and the effects of the pressure on the fuel mixture oxidation were examined. In addition to reactions within the combined model for the two fuels, about 80 cross-reactions between primary reactive species generated from these two fuel molecules were added to explore their potential influences.

International audience; The oxidation of neopentane was studied in jet-stirred reactors at atmospheric pressure over a temperature range 500–850 K and ϕ = 0.5. The products were analyzed with chromatographic, mass spectrometric, and photoelectron spectroscopic setups complemented with theoretical calculations. This combination provides a comparison of photo-ionization mass spectrometry and gas chromatography for the quantification of mole fractions and highlights the relevant differences between them, while mass-tagged photoelectron spectroscopy sheds light onto the isomeric distribution. The new data and corresponding analyses are expected to provide valuable guidance for an extension of the kinetic model and the choice of experimental methods. The main first and second O2-addition products were observed in agreement with the literature (e.g., 3,3-dimethyloxetane, acetone, isobutene, and γ-ketohydroperoxide). The simulated mole fractions of the products using a literature kinetic model were compared to the experimental results. Even though the kinetic model has been validated previously, significant discrepancies between the measured and simulated mole fractions of 2-methylpropanal and methacrolein, two fuel-specific low-temperature oxidation products, were found. Furthermore, some experimentally observed species related to γ-ketohydroperoxide decomposition were not predicted indicating that the model is incomplete. The detection of 2-methylpropanal and formic acid highlighted the importance of the Korcek-type pathway.

International audience; Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant carbon source and it is a base of the whole biorefinery concept. Levoglucosan (1,6-anhydro-β-D-glucopyranose) (LG) is an anhydrous sugar formed as a major product during pyrolysis of cellulose. LG might be a promising chemical platform. It can be converted to different high added-value chemicals such as levoglucosenone, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and styrene directly or through a glucose intermediate via chemical, catalytic and biochemical processes. In this critical review we focus not only on the pyrolytic methods for the synthesis of levoglucosan, but above all also on the recent scientific progress in the chemical and biochemical transformation of levoglucosan to highly valued compounds. The catalytic performances of the heterogeneous and enzymatic catalytic systems used for different reactions of LG conversion are reviewed. Specific properties of the active sites, roles of additives, and solvents and conditions are discussed in detail. We conclude on recommendations to further improve LG conversion to high added-value products.

International audience; Di-n-butyl ether (DBE, C8H18O) has been proposed as a promising biofuel for diesel engines, but details of its low-temperature (LT) oxidation chemistry are not well understood. This paper reports new speciation data obtained in the temperature range of 400–1100 K at ϕ=1 and nearly-atmospheric pressure, using a plug flow reactor combined with electron ionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) and two different jet-stirred reactors coupled with either online gas chromatography or tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization-MBMS.The experimental results confirm that DBE is very reactive and exhibits two negative-temperature coefficient (NTC) zones around 500–550 K and 650–750 K. Speciation data with about 40 C0-C8 species are presented, including about 20 LT species not reported previously. Among those, fuel-specific C8H16O2 cyclic ethers were quantified. Also, butanoic acid, which is present in highest amounts among the detected LT intermediates, and C8H14O3 diones, were found to peak already near 500 K, suggesting their importance in the LT chemistry of DBE. Signals of several highly oxygenated peroxides (e.g., C8H14O5 and C8H16O6) were detected, indicating third O2 addition steps. Respective reaction pathways are suggested and discussed based on these experimental results.To better understand the LT chemistry of DBE, the present data were compared to two recent DBE models (Cai et al., 2014; Thion et al., 2017). Significant discrepancies between the experimental data and both models were found for important LT intermediates, of which many were not included in the respective mechanisms. The results reported in the present study thus provide new opportunities for refining DBE kinetic models.

International audience; Diethyl ether (DEE) has been recently suggested as a potential biofuel for compression-ignition engines that are known to be significantly controlled by low-temperature (LT) chemistry. However, the LT oxidation of DEE has not fully been understood in term of the formation of LT fuel-specific products. We have thus studied the oxidation of DEE by examining detailed profiles of its oxidation products under LT conditions (400-1100 K). To this end, we have used a dedicated experimental setup including a nearly-atmospheric jet-stirred reactor (JSR) coupled to online gas chromatography (GC). The experiments were complemented by measurements made with a JSR coupled to tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet (SVUV) photoionization (PI) molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) for a cross-validation of the identification of important LT species. Experimental results indicate that DEE is very reactive; it starts to react around 425 K. DEE exhibits an unusual oxidation behavior with two negative temperature coefficient (NTC) zones in the JSR study. Because of this two-NTC observation, additional experiments were performed with a plug flow reactor (PFR) combined with electron ionization (EI)-MBMS, confirming this behavior in the two types of reactor. Moreover, about 20 oxidation species in C1-C4 range were detected with several intermediates containing 2-3 O-atoms. Acetic acid is found to peak at 525 K with a very large amount, suggesting that it is a key species in the early stage of DEE's LT oxidation. Possible DEE-consumption paths leading to acetic acid formation could play an important role in the oxidation mechanism of DEE. A new model is proposed based on the present experimental observations to include new primary LT reaction paths. The model reproduces the experimental phenomena quite well and enhances the understanding of the two-NTC-zone occurrence and of intermediates containing 2-3 O-atoms during the LT oxidation of DEE.

We report the design and synthesis of europium-doped gadolinium oxysulfide nanoscintillators Gd2 O2 S:Eu3+ conjugated with two different photosensitizers (PSs): a zinc chlorin (ZnTPC) and a zinc phtalocyanine (ZnPc) by covalent bonding through a layer of N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TPDA). These conjugates were designed to be activated under X-ray excitation to allow a photodynamic effect, although this desired outcome was not achieved in this study. The monodispersed nanoparticles of ∼70 nm diameter were pegylated to be stabilized in aqueous suspension. It was shown that the PSs conserved their photophysical properties once conjugated to the nanoscintillator and efficient singlet oxygen was obtained upon photo-irradiation. However, no energy transfer was observed from the nanoscintillator to the photosensitizer neither under photo- nor X-ray irradiation.

International audience; The reaction chemistry of furanic fuels, proposed as next-generation bio-derived fuels, has been a target of recent studies. However, quantitative intermediate species profiles at low- to moderate-temperature (LMT) conditions remain scarce. The present paper reports the first systematic full speciation dataset in the temperature range 730–1170 K for three furanic fuels, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), 2-methylfuran (MF), and furan, measured for different equivalence ratios under near-identical LMT conditions in a flow reactor at 1 bar. More than 35 species including reactants, intermediate species, and products were analyzed using electron ionization (EI) molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS). These experimental results provided motivation to extend a previous single joint mechanism for the three furanic fuels, developed for the high-temperature regime in low-pressure premixed flames, to include the LMT oxidation chemistry. A decisive difference of the present mechanism versus all previously reported models is a more complete description of fuel radical reactions for LMT oxidation, obtained from theoretical calculations of thermodynamic properties and rate constants.The experimentally observed differences in fuel conversion behavior and species distribution between the three fuels have been compared to model predictions using the newly extended mechanism. The dependence of fuel conversion on equivalence ratio decreases significantly from DMF to furan, a behavior consistent with the different number of lateral methyl groups in the fuel structure. All three furanic fuels, especially DMF, produce several highly toxic oxygenated species including acrolein, methyl vinyl ketone, furfural, and phenol. These toxic species were found to be products of the primary reactions of these fuels, and these undesirable trends could be explained satisfactorily by the present model, pointing to some caution with regard to the potential emission spectra under LMT conditions.

Half-cell is an ex situ device generally used in fuel cell investigations. The present work is related to half-cell investigations of a particular catalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, namely Pt/Vulcan catalyst grafted with 5 wt.% polystyrene sulfonate (PSSA). It was found that the behavior of the half-cell to be immersed in a sulfuric solution was influenced by the hot-pressing conditions in the preparation process: optimum hot-pressing conditions had to be searched for improved, reliable performance of half cells. A stable Nafion® membrane interface on the catalytic layer (CL) was obtained at 135 °C, 40 bars for 6 min. Otherwise, owing to the ion-exchange properties of the PSSA graft, electrodes were prepared with lower amounts of Nafion® and the effect of Nafion® introduction in the preparation was discussed: test electrodes mounted in half-cell had either 0.25 or 0.50 mg cm−2 Nafion® dispersed in CL, or with 0.50 mg cm−2 deposited on CL surface. Their performances for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were studied using linear voltammetry (LV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Cyclic voltammetry was used for determination of the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of each electrode. It has been shown that fresh electrodes with 0.50 mg cm−2 Nafion® dispersed in CL exhibit promoted behavior in ORR. However, the GDE prepared with Nafion® deposition on CL surface exhibits the best resistance to ageing tests performed by potential cycling between 0 and 1.2 V/NHE, as revealed by ECSA measurements.

International audience; This paper presents energy transfer occurring in small organically modified core-shell nanoparticles (core lanthanide oxide, shell polysiloxane) (diameter < 10 nm) conjugated with photosensitizers designed for photodynamic therapy applications. These nanoparticles covalently encapsulate a photosensitizing PDT drug in different concentrations. Stable dispersions of the nanoparticles were prepared and the photophysical properties of the photosensitizers were studied and compared to those of the photosensitizers in solution. Increasing the photosensitizer concentration in the nanoparticles was not found to cause any changes in the absorption properties while fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields decreased. As a possible explanation, we have suggested that both long distance energy transfer such as FRET and self-quenching could occur into the nanoparticles. A simple "trend" model of this kind of energy transfer complies with results of experiments on steady state fluorescence and singlet oxygen luminescence.

The oxidation of dimethylether (DME) was studied using a jet-stirred reactor over a wide range of conditions: temperatures from 500 to 1100 K, equivalence ratios of 0.25, 1 and 2, residence time of 2 s, pressure of 106.7 kPa (close to the atmospheric pressure) and an inlet fuel mole fraction of 0.02 (with high dilution in helium). Reaction products were quantified using two analysis methods: gas chromatography and continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy (cw-CRDS). cw-CRDS enabled the quantification of formaldehyde which is one of the major product from DME oxidation as well as that of hydrogen peroxide which is an important branching agent in low-temperature oxidation chemistry. Experimental data were compared with data computed using models from the literature with important deviations being observed for the reactivity at low-temperature. A new detailed kinetic model for the oxidation of DME was developed in this study. Kinetic parameters used in this model were taken from literature or calculated in the present work using quantum calculations. This new model enables a better prediction of the reactivity in the low-temperature region. Under the present JSR conditions, error bar on predictions were given. Simulations were also successfully compared with experimental flow reactor, jet-stirred reactor, shock tube, rapid compression machine and flame data from literature. The kinetic analysis of the model enabled to highlight some specificities of the oxidation chemistry of DME: 1) the early reactivity which is observed at very low-temperature (e.g., compared to propane) is explained by the absence of inhibiting reaction of the radical directly obtained from the fuel (by H-atom abstraction) with oxygen yielding an olefin + HO2●; 2) the low-temperature reactivity is driven by the relative importance of the second addition to O2 (promoting the reactivity through branching chain) and the competitive decomposition reactions with an inhibiting effect. 119

International audience; Tb2O3 coated with a polysiloxane layer is a biocompatible nanoscintillator that exhibits an appropriate pattern of biodistribution after injection. In this contribution, we combine this nanosystem with porphyrin molecules that are able to generate singlet oxygen, a major cytotoxic agent for photodynamic therapy application. Using time-resolved laser spectroscopy and singlet oxygen probes, we demonstrate this combination is suitable for singlet oxygen generation induced by X-ray and provide a physical study of the energy transfer observed between the nanoscintillator and the porphyrin. Combined with a radiotherapy protocol, the proposed nanohybrid system presents a combination of physical, chemical, and biological properties that make it a good candidate for photodynamic effects in deep tissues.

International audience; Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging theranostic modality for various cancer as well as non-cancer diseases. Its efficiency is mainly based on a selective accumulation of PDT and imaging agents in tumor tissue. The vascular effect is widely accepted to play a major role in tumor eradication by PDT. To promote this vascular effect, we previously demonstrated the interest of using an active- targeting strategy targeting neuropilin-1 (NRP-1), mainly over-expressed by tumor angiogenic vessels. For an integrated vascular-targeted PDT with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cancer, we developed multifunctional gadolinium-based nanoparticles consisting of a surface-localized tumor vasculature targeting NRP-1 peptide and polysiloxane nanoparticles with gadolinium chelated by DOTA derivatives on the surface and a chlorin as photosensitizer. The nanoparticles were surface-functionalized with hydrophilic DOTA chelates and also used as a scaffold for the targeting peptide grafting. In vitro investigations demonstrated the ability of multifunctional nanoparticles to preserve the photophysical properties of the encapsulated photosensitizer and to confer photosensitivity to MDA-MB-231 cancer cells related to photosensitizer concentration and light dose. Using binding test, we revealed the ability of peptide-functionalized nanoparticles to target NRP-1 recombinant protein. Importantly, after intravenous injection of the multifunctional nanoparticles in rats bearing intracranial U87 glioblastoma, a positive MRI contrast enhancement was specifically observed in tumor tissue. Real-time MRI analysis revealed the ability of the targeting peptide to confer specific intratumoral retention of the multifunctional nanoparticles.

A number of animal experiments have explored both acute and long-term toxicity with respect to the lungs, the cardiovascular system, and the bladder, showing inflammatory and possible carcinogenic effects. Carbon dioxide also induces multiple fetal malformations and probably reduces fertility in animals. The aim of the review is to recapitulate the physiological and metabolic mechanisms resulting from CO(2) inhalation. As smokers are exposed to a high level of carbon dioxide (13%) that is about 350 times the level in normal air, we propose the hypothesis that carbon dioxide plays a major role in the long term toxicity of tobacco smoke.

International audience; Direct information about fluids under supercritical water conditions is unfeasible due to the engineering restrictions at high pressure and high temperature. Numerical investigations based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations are widely used in order to get extensive information on the fluid behavior, particularly to help the design of a new reactor. This paper presents the numerical investigations performed on an original supercritical water device, especially in the level of the reactor. CFD calculations allow to design and optimize the present reactor described in this study. Currently, this process produces some nanometric oxide powders in continuous way with a production rate of 10-15g h(-1). Examples of synthesized nanomaterials are presented in order to prove the process efficiency. Crystalline ZrO(2) and TiO(2) were produced from a metallic salt and an organometallic as precursors, respectively. Aim: The strategy developed aims to favor the vascular effect of photodynamic therapy by targeting tumor-associated vascularization using peptide-functionalized nanoparticles. We previously described the conjugation of a photosensitizer to a peptide targeting neuropilin-1 overexpressed in tumor angiogenic vessels. Materials & Methods: In this study, we have designed and photophysically characterized a multifunctional nanoparticle consisting of a surface-localized tumor vasculature targeting peptides and encapsulated photodynamic therapy and imaging agents. Results & Conclusion: The elaboration of these multifunctional silica-based nanoparticles is reported. Nanoparticles functionalized with approximately 4.2 peptides bound to recombinant neuropilin-1 protein. Nanoparticles conferred photosensitivity to cells overexpressing neuropilin-1, providing evidence that the chlorin grafted within the nanoparticle matrix can be photoactivated to yield photocytotoxic effects in vitro.

Cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons are important components of usual commercial fuels, with C6-rings being among the most abundant cyclic structures. The combustion chemistry of C6-rings involves different levels of unsaturation, either as initial fuels (aromatics, naphtenes, …) or as intermediates formed during their combustion. In this work the ignition delays of cyclohexane, cyclohexene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene and 1,4-cyclohexadiene are systematically studied using experiments and kinetic modeling. Shock tube experiments were performed at high-temperature (above 1200 K) and for mean pressures of 6 atm. A detailed chemical kinetic model was developed that includes the combustion chemistry of the four cyclo-C6 fuels. Electronic structure calculations were performed at the CCSD(T)/CBS//B2PLYP-D3 level of theory on the pericyclic reactions of the unsaturated fuels. Pressure-dependent rate coefficients were computed by solving the master equation, and included in the mechanism. The model was validated against the new ignition data and against data of the literature. It was able to reproduce the experimental ranking of reactivity: cyclohexene > 14-CHD > cyclohexane > benzene ≈13-CHD. Kinetic analyses were performed to explain this difference of reactivity. It is shown that pericyclic reactions play a major role in the initial decomposition of the unsaturated fuels.

International audience; A theoretical study of the thermal decomposition of β-1,4-xylan, a model polymer of hemicelluloses, is proposed for the first time. A mechanism based on unimolecular concerted reactions is elaborated in a comprehensive way. Elementary reactions, such as dehydrations, retro-aldol, retro Diels–Alder, retro-ene, glycosidic bond fissions, isomerizations, etc., are applied to β-1,4-xylan, as well as to the fragments formed. At each stage of the construction of the mechanism, the fragments previously retained are decomposed and the low energy paths are selected to define new fragments. Energy barriers are computed at the CBS-QB3 level of theory and rate coefficients of important reactions are calculated. It is shown that the main reaction pathways can be modelled by reactions involving two specific fragments, which react in closed sequences, similarly to chain-propagating reactions. The proposed reaction scheme allows to predict important species observed during the pyrolysis of xylan, such as aldehydes or CO. In addition, we show that dehydrations require high activation energy and cannot compete with the other reactions. Therefore, it seems difficult to explain, by means of unimolecular homogeneous gas phase reactions, the significant formation of specific species such as furfural as reported by several authors.

International audience; Urea is used in Selective Catalytic and Non Catalytic Reduction (SCR and SNCR) methods for NOx abatement in post-combustion processes. The decomposition of urea-water solution in exhaust systems leads to the formation of NH3, which is the NOx reducing agent. However, the decomposition of urea can also lead to the formation of unwanted pyrolysis by-products, particularly in region where the temperature and pressure conditions are not optimal or via wall-spray interactions. In this study, a gas phase kinetic model for urea pyrolysis is proposed to explain the growth of pyrolysis by-products of urea, and in particular, the route of formation of the major product: isocyanuric acid. Systematic theoretical calculations, using electronic structure calculations and transition state theory, were performed to explore all the possible unimolecular and bimolecular reactions of the initial species. Kinetic modeling was used to select the relevant reaction pathways at each growing step, and their rate constants were refined using CCSD(T)/CBS//B2PLYP-D3/cc-pvTZ calculations. Quantum calculations showed that the postulated growing schemes of the literature, based on the successive urea + HNCO ⇆ biuret, biuret + HNCO ⇆ triuret followed by the cyclization of triuret into isocyanuric acid are not energetically favored. It is observed that the most favored reaction route to isocyanuric acid involves carbamimidic acid, the urea tautomer, that first yields biuret in a reaction with HNCO and then is involved in the formation of triuret by reacting with a decomposition product of biuret. Isocyanuric acid is produced from the reaction between HNCO and the same decomposition product of biuret. This new mechanism of formation of isocyanuric acid is tested at different conditions to explore its most favored conditions of formation in the gas phase. Exploratory simulations of a pseudo condensed phase are also performed to qualitatively simulate condensed phase experiments and explain the observed pyrolysis yields.

International audience; The understanding of the thermal decomposition chemistry of chemical warfare nerve agents is largely limited by the scarcity of kinetic data. Because of the high toxicity of these molecules, experimental determination of their chemical properties is very difficult. In the present work, a comprehensive detailed kinetic model for the decomposition of sarin and some simulants, i.e. di-isopropyl methyl phosphonate (DIMP), diethyl methylphosphonate (DEMP), and triethyl phosphate (TEP) were developed, containing possible molecular and radical pathways. The importance of unimolecular pericyclic decomposition led to evaluate precisely the rate constants of these reactions with high level theoretical calculations. The QCISD(T)/cc-PV∞QZ//B2PLYPD3/6-311+G(2d,d,p) level of theory was selected after a benchmark. The contribution of hindered rotors was included with the 1D-HR-U approach. Tunneling was taken into account for H-atom transfer. Transition state theory was used to calculate high-pressure limit rate constants and pressure dependent rate constants were calculated using Master Equation modelling. The model was validated against experimental pyrolysis and oxidation experimental data available in literature. Flux analyses showed that whatever the conditions are, the first step of decomposition of the studied phosphorus compounds are pericyclic eliminations leading to successive decompositions, whereas bondbreaking or H-atom abstraction remain negligible, even at high temperature.

1H-Phenalen-1-one is a very efficient and easy-to-synthesize photosensitizer. Many substitutions have been previously described, but most of them significantly reduce the singlet oxygen quantum yield. The chloromethyl derivative described elsewhere is a good starting point for the synthesis of many useful derivatives because of the methylene bridge that saves its unique photosensitizing properties. Eighteen new phenalenone derivatives have been synthesized, bearing amine, carboxylic acid, alcohol, azide, and other major functional groups in organic chemistry. These reactions were carried out in good-to-excellent yields, and most of these new compounds retained the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the parent molecule. These new derivatives are very promising precursors for a number of applications such as the development of photosensitive antimicrobial agents or materials.

International audience; The phase behavior of the CO2 (1) + 2,3-dimethylbutane (2) binary mixture has been experimentally studied between 293 and 373 K. Saturation pressures, ranging from 14.0 to 112.2 bar, were visually measured using a high-pressure cell at carbon dioxide mole fractions between 0.20 and 0.93.78 experimental points have been measured: 67 bubble points and 11 dew points. Experimental results reveal that the vapor-liquid critical locus is a continuous curve between the two pure compounds, meaning that the studied binary system exhibits a type I or II phase behavior in the classification scheme of Van Konynenburg and Scott. The experimental data can be very satisfactorily represented by the Peng-Robinson equation of state with mixing rules that embed a temperature-dependent binary interaction parameter.

International audience; In the context of better understanding pollutant formation from internal combustion engines, new experimental speciation data were obtained in a high-pressure jet-stirred reactor for the oxidation of three molecules, which are considered in surrogates of Diesel fuel, n-heptane, ethylbenzene, n-butylbenzene. These experiments were performed at pressures up to 10 bar, at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1100 K and for a residence time of 2 s. Based on results previously obtained close to atmospheric pressure for the same molecules, the pressure effect on fuel conversion and product selectivity was discussed. In addition, for the three fuels, the experimental temperature dependence of species mole fractions were compared with simulations using recent literature models with generally a good agreement. For n-heptane, the obtained experimental data, at 10 bar for stoichiometric mixtures, included the temperature dependence of the mole fractions of the reactants and those of 21 products. Interestingly, the formation of species previously identified as C7 diones was found significantly enhanced at 10 bar compared to lower pressures. The oxidation of ethyl-and n-butylbenzene was investigated at 10 bar for equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1 and 2. The obtained experimental data included the temperature dependence of the mole fractions of the reactants and those of 13 products for the C8 fuels and of 19 products for the C10 one. For ethylbenzene under stoichiometric conditions, the pressure dependence (from 1 to 10 bar) of species mole fraction was also recorded and compared with simulations with more deviations obtained than for temperature dependence. For both aromatic reactants, a flow rate analysis was used to discuss the main pressure influence on product selectivities.

International audience; Iron can be produced by the direct electrochemical reduction of hematite particles suspended in hot, concentrated NaOH solutions. Because various other iron sources can be considered, the present work was aimed at investigating the electrolytic treatment of the "red mud" generated by Bayer process for alumina preparation from bauxite. Such iron sources contain very high amounts of impurities, in particular silicon and aluminium oxide-based minerals, in addition to other mineral phases. Electrolytic reductive treatment of the industrial red mud sample was shown to be possible but with both lower current density and current efficiency for Fe deposition. After deposition tests at fixed current density, further experiments in simulation tests have been carried out for better understanding: in particular hematite particles were tested, with or without various impurities introduced in the solution. Presence of little soluble impurities at the particle surface appears to hinder the reactivity of the suspended particles at the cathode surface, whereas side-hydrogen efficiency still occurs.

Designing and manufacturing multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) are of considerable interest for both academic and industrial research. Among NPs used in this field, iron oxide NPs show low toxicity compared to metallic ones and are thus of high interest for biomedical applications. In this work, superparamagnetic Fe3−δO4-based core/shell NPs were successfully prepared and characterized by the combination of different techniques, and their physical properties were investigated. We demonstrate the efficiency of the layer-by-layer process to graft polyelectrolytes on the surface of iron oxide NPs. The influence of the polyelectrolyte chain configuration on the magnetic properties of the Fe3−δO4/polymer core/shell NPs was enlightened. The simple and fast process described in this work is efficient for the grafting of polyelectrolytes from surfaces, and thus, derived Fe3−δO4 NPs display both the physical properties of the core and of the macromolecular shell. Finally, the cytotoxicity toward the human THP-1 monocytic cell line of the core/shell NPs was assessed. The results showed that the polymer-capped Fe3−δO4 NPs exhibited almost no toxicity after 24 h of exposure at concentrations up to 25 μg mL–1. Our results show that these smart superparamagnetic nanocarriers with stealth properties are promising for applications in multimodal cancer therapy, including drug delivery.

International audience; Benzaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde commonly considered in bio-oil surrogate formulation, and an important intermediate in the oxidation of other aromatic reference fuels such as toluene. However, its oxidation has never been previously investigated experimentally and no product formation profiles were reported in the very limited pyrolysis studies available in the literature. In this study, the gas-phase oxidation of benzaldehyde was investigated in a jet-stirred reactor. 48 species were detected using gas chromatography, mainly CO, CO2 and phenol. The important formation of CO and phenol indicates a rapid formation of phenyl radicals. This was confirmed by a kinetic analysis performed using the current version of the CRECK kinetic model, in which the reactions of phenyl radicals and oxygenated aromatic compounds have been updated.

International audience; A complete understanding of the mechanism of ammonia pyrolysis and oxidation in the full range of operating conditions displayed by industrial applications is one of the challenges of modern combustion kinetics. In this work, a wide-range investigation of the oxidation mechanism of ammonia was performed. Experimental campaigns were carried out in a jet-stirred reactor and a flow reactor under lean conditions (0.01 ≤ Φ ≤ 0.375), such to cover the full range of operating temperatures (500 K ≤ ≤ 2000 K). Ammonia conversion and the formation of products and intermediates were analyzed. At the same time, the ammonia decomposition reaction, H-abstractions and the decomposition of the HNO intermediate were evaluated ab initio, and the related rates were included in a comprehensive kinetic model, developed according to a first-principles approach. Low-temperature reactor experiments highlighted a delayed reactivity of ammonia, in spite of the high amount of oxygen. A very slow increase in NH 3 consumption rate with temperature was observed, and a full reactant consumption was possible only ∼150-200 K after the reactivity onset. The use of flux analysis and sensitivity analysis allowed explaining this effect with the terminating effect of the H-abstraction on NH 3 by O 2 , acting in the reverse direction because of the high amounts of HO 2. The central role of H 2 NO was observed at low temperatures (T < 1200 K), and H-abstractions from it by HO 2 , NO 2 and NH 2 were found to control reactivity, especially at higher pressures. On the other side, the formation of HNO intermediate via NH 2 + O = HNO + H and its decomposition were found to be crucial at higher temperatures, affecting both NO/N 2 ratio and flame propagation.

International audience; The Rhamnus alaternus plant is a rich source of excellent bioactive compounds including polyphenols and flavonoids. Yet, the improvement of the extraction yield of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) from this plant has never been inspected in depth. Hence, using a 15-run Box-Behnken design, a dynamic maceration process was optimized for the extraction of TPC and TFC in order to investigate the antioxidant capacity of the various fractions by DPPH assay. Three factors (i.e., ratio of solvent-to-solid material plant, stirring speed and extraction time), were investigated and optimized for establishing a cost-effective process in order to produce extracts rich in phenolic components. With a desirability value of 0.970, the optimal extraction parameters of polyphenols and flavonoids were as follows: a ratio of solvent-to-solid of 10:1 mL/g, a stirring speed of 518 rpm, and 24 h of extraction. For such optimized conditions of dynamic maceration, the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents were experimentally determined at 230.9 mg GAE/g and 121.1 mg QE/g of extract, respectively with an IC50 value of 22.5 μg/mL, and were in agreement with the obtained model values.

Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) waste was evaluated as a fermentation feedstock for lactic acid production using Lactobacillus plantarum. Dilute acid pretreatment of the OFI cladodes (OFIC) was performed for extracting maximum fermentable sugars by optimizing process parameters using statistical optimization method. The best results were obtained with HCl 1% (v/v), temperature 120 ◦C, residence time 40 min, granulation 350 μm and substrate loading 5% (w/v), the sugar concentration reached 24 g/L with low concentration of hydroxymethylfurfural. The feasibility of producing lactic acid from OFI fruit peel (OFIFP) as a source of carbon was also investigated. Lactobacillus plantarum was shown to have a capacity for lactic acid production from OFIC350 (granulation 350 μm) hydrolysate and OFIFP extract without detoxification. The highest lactic acid yields of 0.46 and 0.78 g/g were obtained from enzymatic hydrolysate of pretreated OFIC350 and OFIFP extract, respectively. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

International audience; Three complementary Kraft lignins and a Soda lignin were characterized by NMR (31P, 13C, and HSQC) and GPC. Their theoretical yield in monomers (TMY) assuming a complete cleavage of all β-O-4 linkages was calculated based on these analyses. The most recalcitrant Kraft lignin according to the TMY criteria was depolymerized in supercritical ethanol (250 °C, H2, 110 bar) with Pt/C, Ni/C, and Ru/C catalysts. All catalysts present an important effect on monomers (analyzed by GC/MS), oligomers (by UV fluorescence), and char yields. They promote cracking reactions and the stabilization of the broken bonds by H-transfers. The hydrogenation of the side chains of the monomers is also promoted to notably produce propyl-guaiacol. We show that an oligomeric pool prevails for all catalysts. Then, the effect of lignin structure on the depolymerization mechanism was studied by comparing the 4 lignins with the least precious catalyst (Ni/C). The S/G ratio of monomers is well related to the S/G ratio of lignins. Under our conditions, the β-O-4 content and the TMY do not control the yields in monomers. They are not relevant indicators for the depolymerization of these recalcitrant technical lignins. Future work should focus on novel catalysts and processes to improve the selective conversion of C–C bonds if monomers remain the targeted product.

Growth of the lactic acid bacterium Streptococcus thermophilus in milk depends on its capacity to hydrolyze proteins of this medium through its surface proteolytic activity. Thus, strains exhibiting the cell envelope proteinase (CEP) PrtS are able to grow in milk at high cellular density. Due to its LPNTG motif, which is possibly the substrate of the sortase A (SrtA), PrtS is anchored to the cell wall in most S. thermophilus strains. Conversely, a soluble extracellular PrtS activity has been reported in the strain 4F44. It corresponds, in fact, to a certain proportion of PrtS that is not anchored to the cell wall but rather is released in the growth medium. The main difference between PrtS of strain 4F44 (PrtS4F44) and other PrtS concerns the absence of a 32-residue imperfect duplication in the prodomain of the CEP, postulated as being required for the maturation and correct subsequent anchoring of PrtS. In fact, both mature (without the prodomain at the N-terminal extremity) and immature (with the prodomain) forms are found in the soluble PrtS4F44 form along with an intact LPNTG at their C-terminal extremity. Investigations we present in this work show that (i) the imperfect duplication is not implied in PrtS maturation, (ii) the maturase PrtM is irrelevant in PrtS maturation which is probably automaturated, and (iii) SrtA allows for the PrtS anchoring in S. thermophilus but the SrtA of strain 4F44 (SrtA4F44) displays an altered activity.

International audience; The solid waste of olive oil extraction processes (olive pomace (OP)) was converted into activated carbon (AC) through merely treating it with NaOH and then encapsulating it within sodium alginate (SA) in beads by crosslinking (SA-AC beads). The prepared SA-AC beads were utilized as an adsorbent for the elimination and recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from olive mill wastewater (OMWW) following a zero liquid and waste discharge approach to implement and promote the circular economy concept. The novel AC and SA-AC beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) analysis. The adsorption performance of these beads was evaluated in batch and fixedbed reactors operated in a concurrent flow system. The results revealed that an adsorption capacity of 68 mg g-1 was attained for 4,000 mg L-1 phenolic compounds. The kinetics of the adsorption process of the PCs fit a pseudo second-order model, and the most likely mechanism took place in two stages. The adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model, representing the monolayer adsorption of the phenolic compounds. The dynamic models were used, and they accurately represented the breakthrough curves. Considering PC recovery and process reusability, a regeneration experiment of SA-AC beads was carried out in fixed-bed reactors. SA-AC beads showed a high percentage desorption > 40% using ethanol and were efficient after several cycles of OMWW treatment and phenol recovery.

The VOC removal from air is a major concern both in the context of occupational and domestic exposure. Membrane processes are often presented as unsuitable for the removal of low concentrated VOCs mainly due to a too low driving force leading to high-energy costs. The aim of the work presented in this paper is to investigate the original combination of a dense membrane separation process and a photocatalytic oxidation process implemented in the permeate compartment of the system for the intensification of the separation and the decomposition of toxic compounds. An unpublished modeling of this coupled processes completed by a robust experimental study integrating the main operating parameters (flow rates, pressures, membrane materials, catalyst mass, concentration, light irradiance) is presented in this work. This exploratory study shows that for a test compound, n-hexane, this approach significantly intensifies the separation of a low-concentration VOC (i.e. 1 to 25 ppm) with a low-energy cost. The model developed here allows designing more enhanced system such as hybrid plug-flow module operating with a thin polydimethylsiloxane membrane and sweep-gas on the permeate compartment. This configuration seems particularly relevant for an efficient VOC separation and limits greatly the presence of potential by-products in the treated effluent, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or carbon monoxide well-known intermediates identified in photocatalysis. From a reaction position, this hybrid process leads to the VOC photocatalytic oxidation advantageously increased compared to a single plug-flow reactor especially for low light irradiances (≈3 W m−2). This process is suitable to work with the solar irradiance.

The relationship between interfacial and bulk emulsion viscoelasticity is investigated. Water-in-dodecane reverse Pickering emulsions, with a dispersed phase volume fraction of 0.66, stabilized with partially hydrophobic silica particles are addressed. Interfacial and bulk viscoelastic properties are probed via 2D and 3D oscillatory shear rheology. The silica particles concentration and NaCl content have been varied. In the whole range of concentrations studied the elastic modulus (G′) remains always greater than the viscous modulus for 2D and 3D rheology. The viscoelastic behavior can be related to the silica concentration both at the interface and in the emulsion. Power law dependences towards the silica content are recorded for the interfacial and the bulk emulsion elastic modulus. When increasing the NaCl concentration, the viscoelastic properties both at the interface and in the emulsion become stronger. The amount of silica and NaCl produces similar effects on both the interface and bulk viscoelastic properties. The increase of their concentration induces a rigidification of the dodecane/water interface since G P ′ (interface) increases. Such interfacial hardening produces a rigidification of the droplets ( G P ′ (Emulsion) is enhanced). Correlations between the interfacial and bulk emulsion viscoelasticity are also extracted from the experimental data. This is the first time that these kinds of relationship are reported. These results highlight that everything that affects the interfacial viscoelasticity is reflected on the bulk scale of emulsions.

In this study, phenolic compounds from an aqueous protein by-product from rapeseed meal (RSM) were identified by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS, including sinapine, sinapic acid, sinapoyl glucose, and 1,2-di-sinapoyl gentibiose. The main phenolic compound in this by-product was sinapine. We also performed acid hydrolysis to convert sinapine, and sinapic acid derivatives present in the permeate, to sinapic acid. The adsorption of phenolic compounds was investigated using five macroporous resins, including XAD4, XAD7, XAD16, XAD1180, and HP20. Among them, XAD16 showed the highest total phenolic contents adsorption capacities. The adsorption behavior of phenolic compounds was described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Moreover, thermodynamics tests demonstrated that the adsorption process of phenolic compounds was exothermic and spontaneous. The highest desorption ratio was obtained with 30% (v/v) and 70% (v/v) ethanol for sinapine and sinapic acid, respectively, with a desorption ratio of 63.19 ± 0.03% and 94.68 ± 0.013%. DPPH and ABTS tests revealed that the antioxidant activity of the hydrolyzed fraction was higher than the non-hydrolyzed fraction and higher than the one of vitamin C. Antioxidant tests demonstrated that these phenolic compounds could be used as natural antioxidants, which can be applied in the food industry.

International audience; Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems enable the simultaneous supply of electricity, heating, and cooling, thus meeting the major energy needs of humans in a single device. Conventional CCHP systems consist of the combination of a prime mover, heating, and cooling system, each of them operating with a thermodynamically suitable working fluid. Recently, novel CCHP cycles, based on the use of a single working fluid for the whole operation, have been proposed. Since the choice of the working fluid represents a design challenge in the development of such technologies, in this work, a product design approach for the selection of suitable working fluids for emergent CCHP applications is presented. A database search is implemented to screen about 60 000 structures included in the DDB, the Design Institute for Physical Properties, and the NIST TDE databases. The screening considers thermodynamic, process-related, constructional, safety, and environmental constraints. Moreover, the tc-PR equation of state is used to ensure the quality of the calculation of thermophysical properties and the performance assessment of promising working fluids. This study shows that flammable fluids such as vinylacetylene or HFC-152 have a good potential for CCHP applications. In the case of reinforced safety restrictions, HCFO-1233zd(E) seems to be an interesting candidate since it is nonflammable and nontoxic.

The oxidative coupling (OCM) and the partial catalytic oxidation (POM) of methane as well as the homogeneous oxidation of methane (HOM) differ only in the ratio CH4/O2 used and of course in the use of a catalyst. It can therefore be considered that their overall reaction mechanism should be the same with elementary reactions of varying importance depending on the type of oxidation reaction studied. We have therefore tried to represent the results obtained during the experimental study of OCM and POM over La2O3 and that of the oxidation of methane in gas phase from a single mechanism. At high temperature, OCM and POM are catalytic reactions but their reaction mechanisms are very complex because the surface reactions are coupled to reactions in gas phase by the intermediary of radicals, so both homogeneous and heterogeneous mechanisms occur at the same time. In this work, the development and the validation of a hetero-homogeneous mechanism is proposed for the three reactions. This mechanism is based on elementary steps at the catalyst surface and elementary steps in gas phase for a large range of temperature (973 K–1173 K) and residence time (0.7 s–5.5 s).

International audience; Generated by zinc hydrometallurgical production and containing several toxic species, jarosite has been little used or beneficiated to date. Utilization of jarosite can save mining resources by producing valuable products, and reduce potential hazards from jarosite disposal. To avoid high energy consumption as in the roasting steps of the current jarosite process, hydrometallurgy has been used in the various steps of an original process aimed at producing valuable zinc-iron alloys from industrial jarosite waste. The process designed consists of three main steps: (i) jarosite leaching by sulfuric acid solutions yielding Fe(III) and Zn(II) species; (ii) reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) upon addition of industrial blende; and (iii) electrodeposition of the alloy from the recovered acidic Fe-Zn solution. Care was also taken to limit the amount of alkali to be added by maintaining the pH in a narrow range; moreover, no specific additives were employed. The various steps of the process have been investigated and the most suitable conditions for high yields have been identified. Among the various impurities in the minerals used and recovered from the acidic solution, copper ions had to be removed by preferential electrodeposition prior to deposition of Zn-Fe alloys. Nevertheless, these results indicated the need for a divided cell to avoid galvanic interference in this last operation from the Fe(II)/Fe(III) couple, which was found to reduce the faradaic yield for alloy deposition from 69% in the first minutes to 30% after 30 minutes.

The chemistry underlying liquid-phase oxidation of organic compounds, the main cause of their aging, is characterized by a free-radical chain reaction mechanism. The rigorous simulation of these phenomena requires the use of detailed kinetic models that contain thousands of species and reactions. The development of such models for the liquid phase remains a challenge as solvent-dependent thermokinetic parameters have to be provided for all the species and reactions of the model. Therefore, accurate and high-throughput methods to generate these data are required. In this work, we propose new methods to generate these data, and we apply them for the development of a detailed chemical kinetic model for n-butane autoxidation, which is then validated against literature data. Our approach for model development is based on the work of Jalan et al. [J. Phys. Chem. B 2013, 117, 2955-2970] who used Gibbs free energies of solvation [ΔsolvG(T)] to correct the data of the gas-phase kinetic model. In our approach, an equation of state (EoS) is used to compute ΔsolvG as a function of temperature for all the chemical species in the mechanism. Currently, ΔsolvG(T) of free radicals cannot be computed with an EoS and it was calculated for their parent molecule (H-atom added on the radical site). Theoretical calculations with the implicit solvent model were performed to quantify the impact of this assumption and showed that it is acceptable for radicals in n-butane and probably in all n-alkanes. New rate rules were proposed for the most important reactions of the model, based on theoretical calculations and the literature data. The developed detailed kinetic model for n-butane autoxidation is the first proposed model in the literature and was validated against the experimental data from the literature. Simulations showed that the main autoxidation products, sec-butyl hydroperoxides and 2-butanol, are produced from H-abstractions from n-butane by sec-C4H9OO radicals and the C4H9OO + C4H9OO reaction, respectively. The uncertainty of the product ratio ("butanone + 2-butanol"/"2-butoxy + 2-butoxy") of the latter reaction remains high in the literature, and our simulations suggest a 1:1 ratio in n-butane solvent.

Curcumin is a naturally occurring hydrophobic polyphenol compound. It exhibits a wide range of biological activities such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, antifungal, anti-HIV, and antimicrobial activity. In this research work, antimicrobial curcumin nanofibrous membranes are produce by an electrospinning technique using the Eudragit RS 100 (C19H34ClNO6) polymer solution enriched with curcumin. The morphology and chemistry of the membrane are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Kirby Bauer disk diffusion tests are carried out to examine the antibacterial effectiveness of the membrane. Experimental results show that the nanofibers produced are of uniform thickness morphology and curcumin is successfully incorporated into the nanofibrous mat, while no chemical bonding was observed between curcumin and the polymer. The antimicrobial curcumin nanofibrous membranes can be effectively applied as antimicrobial barrier in a wide variety of medical applications such as wound healing, scaffolds, and tissue engineering.

International audience; The efficient, versatile and straightforward synthesis of the first N-alkyl analogs of induline 3B (8a and 8b) is reported. Thanks to the introduction of lipophilic substituents and its attractive photophysical properties (far-red emission and production of singlet oxygen), phenazinium 8b can be used as theranostic agent and shows, at very low concentration (100 nM), a remarkable ability to: i) image cells and zebrafish embryos with high quality under both mono (514 nm) and biphotonic (790 and 810 nm) excitations, ii) efficiently and quickly penetrate cancer cells rather than healthy fibroblast, iii) induce a total or almost total cancer cell death in vitro and in vivo after illumination (exc = 540-560 nm). The molecular structure of 8b is based on a triamino-phenazinium core only, with no need for additional components, highlighting the emergence of a minimalistic and versatile class of fluorescent probes for targeted photodynamic cancer therapy.

International audience; Minerals are essential to different biological processes in living beings. Likewise, free transition metals such as copper and iron promote the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). However, metal-binding peptides obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins or synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis avoid ROS formation catalyzed by free transition metals. Interactions between metals and mineral-binding peptides (MBPs) are usually studied using spectroscopic techniques, isothermal titration calorimetry, and more recently by surface plasmon resonance and switchSENSE. Through electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, the changes in the binding affinities can be studied. MBPs can be purified using immobilized metal-ion affinity chromatography, and its process simulation. Various cellular models are used to investigate the health effects of MBPs.

International audience; This paper focuses on the best way to produce methanol by Coke Oven Gas (COG) conversion and by carbon dioxide capture. The COG, produced in steelworks and coking plants, is an interesting source of hydrogen that can be used to hydrogenate carbon dioxide, recovered from flue gases, into methanol. The architecture of the reuse process is developed and the different process units are compared by considering a hierarchical decomposition. Two case studies are selected, process units are modelled, and flowsheets are simulated using computer-aided design software. A factorial techno-economic analysis is performed together with a preliminary carbon balance to evaluate the economic reliability and the environmental sustainability of the proposed solutions. The production costs of methanol are equal to 228 and 268 €/ton for process configurations involving, respectively, a combined methane reforming of COG and a direct COG separation to recover hydrogen. This cost is slightly higher than the current price of methanol on the market (about 204 €/ton for a process located in the USA in 2013). Besides, the second case study shows an interesting reduction of the carbon footprint with respect to reference scenarios. The carbon dioxide capture from flue gases together with COG utilization can lead to a competitive and sustainable methanol production process depending partly on a carbon tax.

The sorption behavior of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) with respect to lead, copper and zinc was studied to consider its application to remove metal from water runoff. A series of kinetics of removal and isotherms were undertaken with single metal and mixture solutions. The sorption occurred by ion exchange with calcium. Sorption kinetics were modelled using pseudo-second order model. The weight capacities of CSH were lead > copper >> zinc when studied separately. The co-ion associated to the metal ion is of importance on the removal capacities.

International audience; Fast-pyrolysis bio-oils (FPBOs) obtained from lignocellulosic biomass are gaining attention as sustainable fuels for various applications, including the transport sector and power production. A significant fraction of bio-oils is constituted by nitrogen-containing compounds (N fuels) that should be considered when developing surrogate models for FPBOs. Moreover, the content of N fuels in FPBOs is expected to strongly contribute to the production of nitrogen oxides (NOx) directly from fuel-bound nitrogen (fuel NOx), in addition to the thermal NOx formation pathways typical of high-temperature combustion conditions. This work investigates the pyrolysis and combustion chemistry of pyrrole (C4H5N), a candidate reference fuel component for FPBO surrogate models. Speciation measurements in an atmospheric pressure jet-stirred reactor have been performed for both pyrolysis and oxidation conditions. Pyrolysis experiments have been performed for 1% pyrrole/helium mixtures over the temperature range T = 925-1200 K. Oxidation experiments were carried out for 1% pyrrole/oxygen/helium mixtures at three equivalence ratios (φ = 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) over the temperature range T = 700-1200 K. These new data significantly extend the number of experimental targets for kinetic model validation available at present for pyrrole combustion. After a thorough revision of previous theoretical and kinetic modeling studies, a preliminary kinetic model is developed and validated by means of comparison to new experimental data and those previously reported in the literature. The rate of production and sensitivity analyses highlight important pathways deserving further investigations for a better understanding of pyrrole and, more in general, N fuel combustion chemistry. A critical discussion on experimental challenges to be faced when dealing with pyrrole is also reported, encouraging further experimental investigation with advanced diagnostics.

International audience; A single source molecular precursor synthesis of new quinary Ag-In-Ga-Zn-S (AIGZS) QDs is presented. Dithiocarbamate complexes with varied Ag/In/Ga/Zn ratios were prepared from AgNO3, In(NO3)3, Ga(NO3)3 and Zn(diethyldithiocarbamate)2. The thermal decomposition of these complexes at 220°C in oleylamine produces AIGZS QDs emitting from the visible to the near-infrared region and with photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) up to 48.3%. For AIGZS QDs prepared with a (Ag + In + Ga)/Zn molar ratio of 1, intragap states likely involving Ag + ions are responsible of the PL emission and the PL lifetime could reach 278 ns. A marked increase of the PL lifetime (up to 915 ns) was observed when decreasing the (Ag + In + Ga)/Zn molar ratio to 0.5. The optical properties of AIGZS QDs could be maintained after transfer in aqueous solution. AIGZS should be of high potential for various applications due to their PL emission tunability and high PL QYs.

Refractory pollutants often exist in wastewater after photocatalysis. Here, experiments, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) simulations were used to explain the different levels of photocatalytic degradation of organics in papermaking wastewater associated with two photocatalytic processes with the goal of improving environmental sustainability. The photocatalytic experiments of flocculation and SBR effluents of papermaking wastewater were studied in a reactor with nano-TiO2 colloid, followed by GC–MS analysis, and the different degradation levels of organics were explained based on DFT adsorption and photocatalysis simulations. The experimental results show that the total COD removal rates were 65.8% and 90.8% for the flocculation-photocatalysis and SBR-photocatalysis processes, and the resin acids and fatty acids in wastewater were classified as easily degradable pollutants and esters as refractory pollutants. The adsorption and photocatalysis simulations show that compared with dehydroabietic acid and pentadecanoic acid, the adsorption of glycerol monostearate by nano-TiO2 colloid is difficult, the reaction pathways for photocatalysis are complex and the band gap of TiO2 photocatalyst after adsorption is wide. The experimental and simulation results indicate that the different degradation levels are attributed to the difficulty of the adsorption and photocatalytic reactions of glycerol monostearate compared with the reactions of the other two easily degradable pollutants. Thus, the different photocatalytic degradation levels of organic pollutants in the two photocatalytic processes of papermaking wastewater indicate that sustainable photocatalytic technology could be applied to different types of industrial wastewater.

Catalytic oxidation of propylene to acrolein is usually performed in a multi-tubular fixed bed catalytic reactor at industrial scale. Nevertheless, the production of side products is not optimal as well as the use of molten salt to cool the reactants. This is mainly due to heat transfer issues resulting of the high exothermicity of the reactions. This paper deals with the reactor intensification for the propylene oxidation on a solid bismuth/molybdate catalyst. A simple but robust power law kinetic model, based on the recent published literature, is first proposed, and kinetic parameters are identified by comparison between experiments performed on an isothermal micro fixed bed catalytic reactor and simulations obtained from a pseudo-homogeneous reactor model. The determined parameters are in good agreement with published ones. This kinetic model is then used for the design of an intensified heat-exchanger reactor (HEX reactor). This device consists in several reactive catalyst washcoated channels alternatively distributed with coolant channels. Three performance parameters (acrolein yield, propylene conversion and maximal temperature elevation) are defined, and their variations against process parameters are determined in order to size the HEX reactor and to identify optimal process conditions, for a given feed flow rate.
