Diarrhea is a prevalent gastrointestinal problem associated with fatal implications. It is a huge public health concern that requires better alternatives to current drugs. This study investigated the mechanisms involved in the antidiarrheal activity of Anacardium occidentale (Ao) stem bark extract, a plant commonly used in the management of diarrhea in Nigeria. Methanolic stem bark extract of the plant was partitioned into 3 fractions; hexane fraction (AoHF), ethyl acetate fraction (AoEF) and methanol fraction (AoMF). In vitro studies on the effect of these fractions using guinea pig ileum (GPI) muscle contraction, as well as the modulatory effect of standard agonists and antagonists on such contraction, revealed AoEF as the most active fraction. In vivo studies to assess the effect of AoEF on the dopaminergic, muscarinic and serotonergic pathways were carried out using gastric emptying (GE) and gastrointestinal transit (GT) as experimental end points. AoEF was subjected to GC-MS analysis, while the identified compounds were docked with the muscarinic acetylcholinesterase receptor (M3) using AutodockVina. Results indicated that AoEF inhibited GE and GT via inhibition of M3. In addition, GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 24 compounds in AoEF; while docking indicated that octadecanoic acid 2-(2-hydroxylethoxy) ethyl ester exhibited the highest binding affinity for M3. This study indicated that the antidiarrheal activity of Ao is through its antimotility effect via the inhibition of the muscarinic pathway. And since none of the identified compounds exhibited higher binding affinity for M3 relative to loperamide, the antimotility activity of these phytoconstituents may be via synergism.

La investigación tuvo como objetivo comparar la eficiencia inhibidora y estabilizante de asfaltenos, en mezclas de aceite de cáscaras de Anacardium occidentale (CNSL) en diésel y productos dispersantes comerciales, para evaluar el aceite como alternativa de tratamiento químico antiasfalténico del petróleo crudo. Se determinó el umbral de floculación por precipitación con n-heptano y el punto de dispersión por adición de xileno, ambos mediante la observación directa de la formación de flóculos de asfaltenos en un microscopio óptico. El diseño experimental utilizado fue factorial, con cuatro variables respuestas (umbral de floculación, actividad inhibidora, índice de inestabilidad y eficiencia de estabilización) y dos factores experimentales (producto y dosis). Se evaluaron cinco productos con CNSL y tres productos comerciales, todos en dosis 2, 4, 6 y 8 µl en 10 ml de una muestra de petróleo crudo mediano. El análisis estadístico se basó en Anova multifactorial y test de diferencia mínima significativa de Fisher (LSD) con α = 0.05. Se obtuvo que los dos factores experimentales influyeron significativamente en las variables respuestas de forma individual y también sus interacciones. Los productos con CNSL fueron más eficientes como inhibidores y los comerciales más eficientes como estabilizadores.

The objective of this work was to obtain and characterize sodium alginate-based biopolymer films with the addition of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). The study employed a completely randomized design, including 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% inclusion of CNSL. Uniform formation of the films was observed, and the addition of CNSL provided better thermal resistance than did the treatment without inclusion, while the addition of CNSL reduced the homogeneity of the microstructure, especially for the 1.5% inclusion level. The permeability of the film increased as the level of CNSL increased, especially in response to the concentrations of 1% and 1.5%, and no significant difference in permeability was observed between these treatments. The tensile strength decreased proportionally as a function of the addition of CNSL, as its inclusion increased the elasticity and elongation of the films. In addition, the films with CNSL demonstrated strong antioxidant activity and discrete antimicrobial activity, and ecotoxicity analysis showed that the levels of CNSL tested and the films produced were nontoxic. Thus, these films are promising and self-sustainable alternatives for the agrifood industry.

Background Hyperglycemia is the hallmark of diabetes, and the associated oxidative stress is a major concern that invites an array of diabetic complications. The traditional practices of medicare are of great, current interest due to the high cost and side effects of conventional diabetic medications. The present in vitro study focuses on evaluating the potential of various A. occidentale root extracts for their antihyperglycemic and antioxidant potentials. Materials and methods The four different solvent extracts petroleum ether (PEAO), chloroform (CHAO), ethyl acetate (EAAO), and 80 % methanol (80 % MAO) of A. occidentale roots were evaluated for their total phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity. Using MIN6 pancreatic β-cells, the cytotoxicity of the extracts was evaluated by MTT assay and the antidiabetic potential by quantifying the insulin levels by ELISA at a higher concentration of glucose. The effect of 80 % MAO on INS gene expression was determined by qRT PCR analysis. Results Among the four different solvent extracts of A. occidentale roots, 80 % MAO showed the highest concentration of phenolics (437.33 ± 0.03 µg GAE/mg), CHAO to be a rich source of flavonoids (46.04 ± 0.1 µg QE/mg) and with the highest total antioxidant capacity (1865.33 ± 0.09 µg AAE/ mg). Evaluation of the free radical scavenging and reducing properties of the extracts indicated 80 % MAO to exhibit the highest activity. The MTT assay revealed the least cytotoxicity of all four extracts. 80 % MAO enhanced INS up-regulation as well as insulin secretion even under high glucose concentration (27mM). Conclusions The present study demonstrated that the A. occidentale root extracts have effective antihyperglycemic and antioxidative properties, together with the potential of normalizing the insulin secretory system of β-cells. Above mentioned properties have to be studied further by identifying the active principles of A. occidentale root extracts and in vivo effects. The prospect of the present study is identifying drug leads for better management of diabetes from the A. occidentale root extracts. Graphical abstract

BackgroundCashew and its compounds have many important biological effects. This study is aimed at evaluating genotoxic and mutagenic effects of natural cashew nut shell liquid (nCNSL) and industrial cashew nut shell liquid (iCNSL) and a major component of iCNSL called Cardanol.MethodsTest samples were undergone for comet assay and micronucleus tests inSwissalbino mice. Animals were orally treated with 17.37, 34.75 and 69.5 mg/kg of the test substances taking distilled water (10 mL/kg; DW) and cyclophosphamide (50 mg/kg) as negative (NC) and positive (PC) controls, respectively.ResultsThe results suggest that nCNSL at 34.7 and 69.5 mg/kg and Cardanol at all tested doses induced significant genotoxic effects to the female mouse bone marrow cells, while iCNSL did not. Both nCNSL and iCNSL as well as Cardanol did not show mutagenic and cytotoxic effects. All the test samples also showed DNA repair capacity at low dose.ConclusionCashew nut shell liquids and Cardanol showed genotoxic effects at high dose, but DNA repair, non-mutagenic and non-cytotoxic effects at low dose.

Agathisflavone (AGF) is a biflavonoid with a number of important biological and pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective effects. However, its toxicological effects have not been fully investigated. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the toxicological effects of AGF in mice. For this purpose, the median lethal dose 50% (LD50) was determined along with the anatomic and histopathological parameters (weight, alimentation, excretion, biochemical, and hematological) in fertile untouched female Swiss mice. Results suggest that during the treatment, no deaths were reported at 300 and 2000 mg/kg (n = 03/group, p.o.). Moreover, AGF did not cause significant change in the above mentioned parameters in test animals when compared with the control group (0.05% Tween 80 dissolved in 0.9% saline). Taken all together, this non-clinical toxicological study revealed that AGF has an LD50 larger than 2000 mg/kg and did not change significantly the hematological, biochemical, histopathological, behavioral, as well as physiological parameters in the female mice.

Objective: To evaluate the anti-obesity activity of ethanolic extract of cashew apple using various in vitro and in vivo models. Methods: Phytochemical screening was carried out in ethanolic extract of cashew apple, followed by quantification of phenol and flavonoid. Antioxidant potential was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) scavenging assays. The inhibitory effect of ethanolic extract of cashew apple on α-amylase and pancreatic lipase was also studied. In addition, anti-obesity activity was determined in two in vivo models, lipid emulsion model and atherogenic diet-induced obese rat model. Levels of postprandial plasma triglycerides were assessed in lipid emulsion model, whereas serum lipid profile, in vivo antioxidants and histopathological studies of the carotid artery and liver were performed in an atherogenic diet-induced obese model. Results: Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, polyphenols, terpenoids, and steroids. The in vitro assays showed inhibition of α-amylase and pancreatic lipase and strong antioxidant potential. Ethanolic extract of cashew apple showed significant and time- dependent inhibitory activity on postprandial triglycerides after administration of lipid emulsion for 5 h. Ethanolic extract of cashew apple at 200 and 400 mg/kg on day 60 showed a significant reduction in body weight, body mass index and atherogenic index, whereas lipid profile and liver function marker levels in the serum were decreased in a dose-dependent manner at time intervals (day 0, 20, 40, and 60) compared to the atherogenic diet-induced obese rats. Histological observations showed reduced non-alcoholic fatty liver deposits and decreased atherosclerotic fatty streak plaques (carotid artery) after treatment with ethanolic extract of cashew apple. Conclusions: Ethanolic extract of cashew apple ameliorates obesity, which may be partly mediated by its delayed absorption of cholesterol and carbohydrates.

Neurodegenerative diseases are linked to neuronal cell death and neurite outgrowth impairment that are often caused by oxidative stress. Natural products, which have neuroprotective against oxidative stress and neurite outgrowth inducing activity, could be potential candidates for alternative treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. This study aims to investigate the neuroprotective effects and neuritogenesis properties of Anacardium occidentale leaf extracts in cultured neuronal (HT22 and Neuro-2a) cells. We found gallic acid, catechin and quercetin as the main compounds in A. occidentale extracts. The extracts have a protective effect against glutamate/H2O2-mediated oxidative stress-induced cell toxicity. The gene expression of cellular antioxidant enzymes (SODs, GPx and, GSTs) were up-regulated by this treatment. The treatment also triggered SIRT, Nrf2 proteins as well as the mRNA transcriptions of relevant anti-oxidation genes (NQO1, GCLM, and EAAT3). We demonstrated that the extracts promote antioxidant defense in neuronal cells via the SIRT1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. Moreover, the extracts increase neurite outgrowth and Ten-4 expression in Neuro-2a cells. However, the neuritogenesis properties did not occur, when Ten-4 expression was knocked down by corresponding siRNA. These results suggest that the leaf extracts have an interesting neuritogenesis and neuroprotective potential against glutamate/H2O2-mediated toxicity and could be a potential therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative diseases.

Background Various parts of Anacardium occidentale plant possess curative qualities like antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant. Aqueous extract of this plant leaf was used in biosynthesizing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoaggregates using two precursors of zinc salt (zinc acetate dihydrate [Zn(CH3COO)2∙2H2O] and zinc chloride [ZnCl2]). The synthesized ZnO samples were used in a comparative study to investigate the antibacterial activity against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes [Staphylococcus aureus, Exiguobacterium aquaticum (Gram +ve) and Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii (Gram −ve)]. The synthesized ZnO nanoaggregates from the two precursors were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. Results Micrographs of SEM and TEM confirmed nanoparticles agglomerated into aggregates. While spherical nanoaggregates were identified in samples prepared from Zn(CH3COO)2∙2H2O, flake-like structures were identified in samples synthesized from ZnCl2. Particle size determined by TEM was 107.03 ± 1.54 nm and 206.58 ± 1.86 nm for zinc acetate dihydrate and zinc chloride precursors respectively. ZnO nanoaggregate synthesized using zinc acetate as precursor gave higher antibacterial activity than its counterpart, zinc chloride with K. pneumonia recording the highest inhibition zone of 2.08 ± 0.03 mm (67.53%) whereas S. aureus recorded the least inhibition zone of 1.06 ± 0.14 mm (34.75%) for ZnO nanoaggregate from zinc chloride precursor. Also, antibacterial activity increases with increasing concentration of the extract in general. However, A. baumannii, E. aquaticum, and K. pneumoniae did not follow the continuity trend with regards to the 250 ppm and 500 ppm concentrations. Conclusion Biosynthesis of ZnO nanoaggregates using aqueous extract of A. occidentale leaf from zinc acetate dihydrate and zinc chloride as precursors was successful with the formation of nanospheres and nanoflakes. The study suggested that A. occidentale sp. could be an alternative source for the production of ZnO nanoparticles and are efficient antibacterial compounds against both Gram +ve and Gram −ve microbes with its promising effect against infectious bacteria.

Background The leaf of Anacardium occidentale L. has been a component of many herbal recipes in South-Western Nigeria. The work reported herein, therefore, explored the phytochemical composition of this plant and the potential anti-cancer activity of an isolated chemical constituent. Methods Phytochemical methods (including chromatographic analysis) combined with spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses (IR, HRMS and NMR (1D and 2D)) were used to identify chemical constituents. Cytotoxic effects were determined using the MTT viability assay and bright-field imaging. Induction of oxidative stress was determined using the fluorescence-based 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) assay. Results For the first time in the plant, Compound 1 was isolated from the leaf extract and identified as pentagalloylglucose. Compound 1 was significantly cytotoxic against the cancer cell lines HeLa (human cervical adenocarcinoma cell line) and MRC5-SV2 (human foetal lung cancer cell line), with IC50 of 71.45 and 52.24 μg/ml, respectively. The selectivity index (SI) for Compound 1 was 1.61 (IC50 against the normal human foetal lung fibroblast cell line MRC-5 was 84.33μg/ml), demonstrating better cancer cell-selectivity compared to doxorubicin with a SI of 1.28. The cytotoxic activity of Compound 1 in HeLa cells was also rapid, as shown by its concentration- and time-dependent 3 h and 6 h cytotoxicity profiles, an effect not observed with doxorubicin. Generation of reactive oxygen species at high concentrations of pentagalloylglucose to induce oxidative stress in cancer cells was identified as a mechanistic event that led to or resulted from its cytotoxicity. Conclusions We suggest that pentagalloylglucose is selectively cytotoxic to cancer cells, and at high concentrations could exhibit pro-oxidant effects in those cells, as opposed to its general anti-oxidant effects in cells. Also, the presence of Compound 1 (pentagalloylglucose) in the plant and its cancer cell-selective cytotoxicity provide some rationale for the ethno-medicinal use of the plant’s leaf extract for treating diseases associated with excessive cell proliferation. Further studies are required to dissect the molecular mechanisms and players differentially regulating the biphasic anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant effects of pentagalloylglucose in normal and cancer cells.

Tyrosinase is an important component of the enzyme polyphenol oxidase, which upon contact with the phenolic substrates forms the pigment melanin and induces undesirable food browning. The phenolic and triterpenoid compounds that naturally occur in plants are well known as tyrosinase inhibitors. Combretum micranthum (CM) leaves, Euphorbia hirta (EH) plant, and Anacardium occidentale (AO) fruits are traditionally known to have potential anti-tyrosinase activities. The aim of this study was to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of secondary metabolites from these matrices, and to evaluate in tubo the antityrosinase activity of these extracts. Efforts were also taken to profile the secondary metabolites, mainly the phenolic and triterpenoid compounds, in order to understand their probable association with tyrosinase inhibition. The optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions for simultaneous extraction of phenolic, and triterpenoid compounds were determined. The aqueous fraction of these extracts showed significant antityrosinase activity, with the CM leaves exhibiting the strongest inhibitory effect (IC50 of 0.58 g&middot, L&minus, 1). The predominant metabolic compounds from these natural extracts were putatively identified by using a high-resolution quadrupole-time of flight (QToF) LC-MS instrument. The high-resolution accurate mass-based screening resulted in identification of 88 predominant metabolites, which included dihydrodaidzein-7-O-glucuronide, micromeric acid, syringic acid, morin, quercetin-3-O-(6&Prime, malonyl-glucoside), 4-hydroxycoumarin, dihydrocaffeic acid-3-O-glucuronide, to name some, with less than 5 ppm of mass error.

New functional foods and beverages can be developed using bioactive compounds present in pequi oil. Complex coacervation is an encapsulation method used for preserving bioactive molecules, especially those that are hydrophobic or sensitive to high temperatures. The objective of this work was to produce and characterize pequi oil microparticles using cashew gum/gelatin matrix (CG/GE) through complex coacervation. Gum Arabic (GA) was also studied in comparison with CG. The coacervation process was performed without pequi oil to determine the ideal proportions of the matrix components, followed by the embedding of the oil inthe microparticles for evaluation. Satisfactory microparticles were produced at pH 4.5 in the weight ratios of CG/GE = 2:1 and GA/GE = 1:3. Pequi oil release was greater in acidic pH, especially at pH 2 for the CG/GE matrix. The encapsulation efficiency for CG/GE and GA/GE was 72.53% (±4.80) and 82.77% (±6.09), respectively . The results showed that the CG/GE combination seemed very promising as anencapsulation matrix, especially for food applications involving pH values higher than 3.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the preharvest treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on the quality and physiological attributes of ripe 'CCP 76' cashew (Anacardium occidentale) peduncles at different developmental stages. Sprays of 180 mg L-1 GA3 and 180 mg L-1 AVG were applied, combined and isolated, at 34, 40, and 44 days after anthesis (DAA), and peduncles were harvested ripe at 46 DAA and evaluated for physical and physiological variables. The treatment with GA3 resulted in firmer peduncles with a greater apical diameter, but did not affect the physiological variables activity of the pectin methylesterase and polygalacturonase cell wall enzymes and degree of lipid peroxidation of the biological membranes, nor the physical attributes total mass (peduncles and nut) and nut size. At early developmental stages (34 DAA), GA3 increased the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, and, at later stages (40 DAA), promoted polyphenol and carotenoid accumulation. The application of AVG at the final stages (44 DAA) provided greater total antioxidant activity, despite the lower ascorbate peroxidase activity. The application of GA3 pre-harvest increases the firmness and diameter of the cashew peduncles, and the treatment with AVG increases the total antioxidant activity of the peduncles. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tratamento pré-colheita com ácido giberélico (GA3) e 1-aminoetoxivinilglicina (AVG) nos atributos de qualidade e fisiológicos de pedúnculos maduros de cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale) 'CCP 76', em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. Foram realizadas pulverizações com 180 mg L-1 GA3 e 180 mg L-1 AVG, combinadas e isoladas, aos 34, 40 e 44 dias após a antese (DAA), e os pedúnculos foram colhidos maduros aos 46 DAA para avaliações de variáveis físicas e fisiológicas. O tratamento com GA3 proporcionou pedúnculos mais firmes e com maior diâmetro apical, mas não influenciou as variáveis fisiológicas atividades das enzimas pectinametilesterase e poligalacturonase da parede celular e grau de peroxidação lipídica das membranas biológicas, nem os atributos físicos massa total (pedúnculo e castanha) e comprimento e largura da castanha. Em estádios iniciais (34 DAA), GA3 aumentou a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes superóxido dismutase e catalase, e, nos finais (40 DAA), promoveu o acúmulo de polifenóis e carotenoides. A aplicação de AVG, ao final do desenvolvimento (44 DAA), proporcionou maior atividade antioxidante, apesar da menor atividade da ascorbato peroxidase. A aplicação de GA3 em pré-colheita promove aumento da firmeza e do diâmetro dos pedúnculos de cajueiro, e o tratamento com AVG aumenta a atividade antioxidante dos pedúnculos.

We employed cashew plants (Anacardium occidentale L.), a semiarid adapted species, as a model plant. WD-plants exposed to HL did not show alterations in maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), cellular integrity, H2O2 and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) contents, evidencing that they did not suffered photoinhibition and oxidative stress. These responses were associated with increases in ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, glutathione (GSH) oxidation and ascorbate (ASC) synthesis. This effective oxidative protection occurred in parallel to strong decrease in photosystem II and I (PSII and PSI) activities, increase in heat dissipation (qE), which was related to enhancement in cyclic electron flux. These favorable photoprotective changes were associated with efficient water use in response to HL, all contributing to avoid excess energy in chloroplasts of drought-exposed leaves. These protective features were associated with a tight regulation in D1 protein accumulation during HL, contributing to avoid reactive oxygen species over-accumulation and a subsequent effective PSII recovery during darkness. Our results indicate that cashew plants are able to avoid photoinhibition, tolerating extreme conditions of drought combined with HL. The displayed mechanisms involve essentially integrated responses to balance energy input and output, avoiding oxidative stress. One of the strategies to reduce methane produced by ruminants is by the application of feed additive from plant materials. One of the potential plants is cashew plant especially its shell. The cashew nut shell can be processed to become 3 bioindustrial products; ie biofat, biochar, biosmoke. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effectivity of different levels of biofat, biochar and biosmoke against methane and other fermented products.This experiment was arranged in block randomised design. The treatments were: Control (substrate=S), Biofat: S+0.25 µLmL-1, S+0.5 µLmL-1, S+0.75 µLmL-1; Biochar: S+0.1 mgmL-1, S+0.2 mgmL-1, S+0.3 mgmL-1; Biosmoke: S + 2.5 µLmL-1, S+5.0 µLmL-1, S + level7.5 µLmL-1. Each treatment was done in duplicates and the in vitro experiment was repeated 4 times. The measured variables were: total gas production, methane production, (dry matter, organic matter, NDF) degradability, ammonia concentration (NH3) and partial VFA concentration. The results showed that biofat, biochar and biosmoke reduced methane productionas much as 43.88%, 24.21%, 37.88% at the highest level of inclusion, respectively. NH3 slightly increased by biochar and biosmoke addition compared to control. Molar proportion of acetic acid decreased and propionic acid increased by addition of cashew nut shell bioindustrial products compared to control. Organik matter degradability decreased significantly with biofat and biosmoke addition. Different mechanisms of biofat, biochar and biosmoke were proposed in affecting rumen fermentation. It can be concluded that each bioindustrial product of cashew nut shell (biofat, biochar and biosmoke) can be utilised as feed additive to reduce methane and increase propionic acid in the rumen fermentation.

Anacardium occidentale L. (Anacardiaceae) is used in South Cameroon as well as in other tropical countries by traditional practitioners as a folk remedy for treatment of diabetes mellitus. We demonstrated the antidiabetic potential of the plant extracts in n-streptozotocin diabetic rats. The aim of the current study was to investigate the antidiabetic effects of ethanol extract of leaves of A. occidentale on neonatal streptozotocin diabetic rats. Two day old neonates were injected with 100 mg/kg of streptozotocin. At the end of the experimental period of 30 days, reduction in the fasting blood glucose levels, serum insulin, glycated hemoglobin levels, serum lipid parameters, and renal function biomarkers were estimated in the control and treated rats. Histopathological examination of liver, kidney and pancreas were also carried out. On administration of 100 mg/kg of plant extract, blood glucose levels of the rats showed 8.01% and 19.25% decrease in the fasting blood glucose levels on day 15 and day 30, respectively. The administration of extract showed that the effects of extract treatment are comparable to treatment with the standard drug Pioglitazone. These results demonstrate significant antidiabetic potential of the ethanol extract of leaves of A. occidentale, justifying the use of plant in the indigenous system of medicine. Further studies for investigating the specific compound(s) responsible for such beneficial role in diabetes would open new outlook in the therapy of type 2 diabetes., Graphical abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the apparent digestibility and energy value of almond cashew nut by-products for slow-growing broiler chickens. Seventy-six chickens (males and females) were allocated in a completely randomized design to four treatments: a control diet and the same diet in which the conventional ingredients were replaced with 30% (kg/kg) almond cashew nut film, almond cashew nut meal or almond cashew nut mass. The animals were housed in individual cages adapted for excreta collection. The apparent digestibility coefficients of film, full meal and almond mass were, respectively, 81.3, 87.3 and 86.2% for dry matter; 32.1, 71.2 and 56.7% for crude protein (CP); 82.7, 92.6 and 92.8% for ether extract; 10.9, 29.9 and 34.7% for neutral detergent fiber; 7.7, 17.9 and 19.6% for acid detergent fiber; 41.9, 57.2 and 66.7% for coefficient of gross energy metabolism (CGEM); 1,189, 2,648 and 3,719 kcal/kg for apparent metabolizable energy (AME); 8.1, 19.9 and 12.9% for digestible protein, and 3.9, 15.2 and 6.3% for mineral matter (MM). The CP and MM apparent digestibility coefficients of full meal were higher than those of film and almond cashew nut mass, while the latter exhibited higher apparent digestibility of fiber, CGEM and AME compared to the other by-products. The inclusion of almond cashew nut by-products in diets for slow-growing broiler chickens results in lower nutrient digestibility, except for ether extract, neutral detergent fiber and AME, in diets containing 30% almond cashew nut mass.

Thirty-day-old cashew plants were irrigated with nutrient solution without (control) or with supplemental NaCl (100 mM) for 2 weeks in the greenhouse. Afterward, control and salt-stressed plants were transferred to the growth chamber and supplied with atmospheric (380 µmol mol−1) or high CO2 (760 µmol mol−1) concentrations for 15 days. The results show that elevated CO2 alone reduced the CO2 net assimilation rate (PN) without affecting stomatal conductance (gS) and transpiration rate (E), whereas salinity and NaCl + high CO2 reduced the PN associated with a decrease in gS and E. The potential quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was not altered, but a slight reduction in electron transport rate and photochemical quenching (qP) in response to high CO2 alone or combined with NaCl occurred. However, non-photochemical quenching increased due to the effects of high CO2 and NaCl alone and by their combination. High CO2 alleviated the toxic effects of Na+ favoring the K+/Na+ ratio under salinity. High CO2 coupled with salinity decreased glycolate oxidase activity and the contents of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), NH4 +, and glyoxylate. Furthermore, we observed increase in membrane damage associated with increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances levels under high CO2. High CO2 also decreased ascorbate peroxidase activity, but did not affect superoxide dismutase activity. In general, our data suggest that high CO2 could induce acclimation processes in plants independent of salinity, revealing a set of responses that are more associated with acclimation than with protective responses. Context and Objective: Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioïdes, represents the main disease of cashew in the north of Côte d'Ivoire. This study was conducted to assess the toxicity of three synthesis fungicides, Azoxystrobin, Carbendazim and Carbendazim+Chlorothalonil and two essential oils extracted from Cymbopogon nardus and Ocimum gratissimum against Colletotrichum gloeosporioïdes. Material and Methods: Fungicidal properties of these products were evaluated in vitro on mycelial radial growth of C. gloeosporioïdes strain, through six concentrations added to a PDA medium (Potato Dextrose Agar). At the laboratory test, an essential oil, Ocimum gratissimum and the synthetic fungicides based on Azoxystrobine and Carbendazim+Chlorothalonil were selected and tested in situ against anthracnose disease. Résults: After 16 days of incubation at 30 ± 2 °C, the mycelial radial growth of C. gloeosporioïdes was completely inhibited from 1 µL/L by Carbendazim, 5 µL/L of Carbendazim+Chlorothalonil, and 1500 µL/L by essential oil of O. gratissimum. After reeling mycelial disks, the minimum fungicidal concentration obtained was 25 µL/L for Carbendazim, 100 µL/L for Carbendazim+Chlorothalonil and 2000 µL/L for O. gratissimum. The study in situ showed a highly significant reduction of the incidence and the severity of anthracnose on the leaves by essential oil of O. gratissimum. Organic acids have stood out as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters, especially those extracted from plants, such as anacardic acid, which is present in cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This study evaluates the effects of CNSL as a source of anacardic acid in diets of laying hens on performance, egg quality, lipid stability of yolk and microbiological analysis of excreta. A total of 216 commercial Hisex White laying hens were housed in cages and distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six replicates of six birds per treatment. Treatments consisted of a diet without antibiotic growth promoter (AGP); diet with AGP (Halquinol 60% at 0.1 g/kg and Enramycin 8% at 0.1 g/kg); and four diets without AGP and with the inclusion of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 g/kg CNSL. No effects of dietary addition of AGP and CNSL were observed in bird performance and external quality of eggs. A quadratic effect was observed for lipid oxidation in egg yolk, the minimum value of which was found at 5.8 g/kg CNSL. There were no significant effects of treatments on total mesophilic, total coliform and thermotolerant coliform counts on excreta. In conclusion, adding up to 10.0 g/kg of CNSL as source of anacardic acid in laying hen diet did not influence performance or egg quality, but the addition from 7.5 g/kg of CNSL upwards reduced lipid oxidation and improved the yolk colour. Benznidazole and nifurtimox, the only drugs available for the treatment of Chagas disease, have limited efficacy and have been associated with severe adverse side effects. Thus, there is an urgent need to find new biotargets for the identification of novel bioactive compounds against the parasite and with low toxicity. Silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) enzymes, or sirtuins, have emerged as attractive targets for the development of novel antitrypanosomatid agents. In the present work, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of natural compounds isolated from cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale, L. Anacardiaceae) against the target enzymes TcSir2rp1 and TcSir2rp3 as well as the parasite. Two derivates of cardol (1, 2), cardanol (3, 4), and anacardic acid (5, 6) were investigated. The two anacardic acids (5, 6) inhibited both TcSir2rp1 and TcSir2rp3, while the cardol compound (2) inhibited only TcSir2rp1. The most potent sirtuin inhibitor active against the parasite was the cardol compound (2), with an EC50 value of 12.25 &micro, M, similar to that of benznidazole. Additionally, compounds (1, 4), which were inactive against the sirtuin targets, presented anti-T. cruzi effects. In conclusion, our results showed the potential of Anacardium occidentale compounds for the development of potential sirtuin inhibitors and anti-Trypanosoma cruzi agents.

This study evaluated the in vitro digestibility of nutrients from different diets added with chitosan (Q), technic cashew nut shell liquid (LCC) and the association of Q and LCC. The treatments used consisted of 4 diets (forage: concentrate ratio of 100: 0, 50:50, 40:60 and 20:80) associated with 4 additives (control, chitosan, LCC and the association of Q + LCC), totaling 16 treatments, in a 4x4 factorial randomized block design. The dosages used were: Control (without additives), LCC (600mg/kg DM), Chitosan (900mg/kg DM), and LCCQ (600mg/kg LCC DM + 900mg/kg Chitosan DM). In the laboratory, samples were analyzed for IVDMD, IVNDFD, IVCPD, pH and RAN (ruminal ammonia nitrogen). For pH and RAN analyses, samples were taken at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours after incubation. The results showed higher digestibility of DM, NDF and CP for diets with chitosan and technic cashew nut shell liquid alone and higher pH and RAN values in the diets containing the two additives. The association of additives brings better results for animal nutrition and increases ruminant productivity. RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar no presente trabalho a digestibilidade in vitro de nutrientes de diferentes dietas com a adição de quitosana (Q), líquido da casca da castanha de caju (LCC) e a associação entre Q e LCC. Os tratamentos utilizados foram constituídos de 4 dietas (relação volumoso:concentrado, 100:0, 50:50, 40:60 e 20:80) associadas com 4 aditivos (controle, quitosana, LCC e a associação entre ambos Q+LCCt), totalizando 16 tratamentos,distribuídas em delineamento em blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 4x4. As dosagens utilizadas foram: Controle (sem adição de aditivos), LCC (600mg/Kg de MS), Quitosana (900mg/Kg de MS), e o LCCQ (600mg/Kg de MS de LCC + 900mg/Kg de MS de quitosana). No laboratório foram avaliados a DIVMS, DIVFDN, DIVPB, pH e NAR (nitrogênio amoniacal ruminal). Para as análises de pH e NAR, foram coletadas amostras nas horas 0, 2, 4, 6 e 8 após a incubação. Os resultados encontrados mostraram maior digestibilidade de MS, FDN e PB para dietas que receberam quitosana e líquido da casca da castanha de caju de forma isolada e maiores valores de pH e NAR nas dietas que receberam os dois aditivos associados. Conclui-se que a associação dos aditivos traz melhores resultados para a nutrição animal e eleva a produtividade dos ruminantes.

Yacon syrup (YS) and cashew apple extract (CAE) are products with high concentrations of bioactive compounds such as fructooligosaccharides and carotenoids, which exhibit prebiotic and antioxidant properties. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of YS and CAE on the chemical, physical, physicochemical and sensory properties when these products were incorporated into natural yoghurt. Initially, the YS and CAE were characterized by chemical, physical and physicochemical analyses. The bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids, fructooligosaccharides and phenolic compounds, and the antioxidant activity were also determined. After characterization, natural yoghurt was supplemented with YS and CAE in different concentrations as follows: formulation A (non-supplemented yoghurt, as the control), formulation B (yoghurt with the addition of 20% of YS), formulation C (yoghurt with the addition of 20% of YS and 10% of CAE) and formulation D (yoghurt with the addition of 20% of YS and 20% of CAE). The formulations were evaluated for their sensory acceptance (overall acceptance, texture and appearance) and purchase intent, and were then characterized by chemical, physicochemical and physical analyses. The results indicated that the YS and CAE presented high concentrations of bioactive compounds, such as fructooligosaccharides and carotenoids, respectively. In addition, when the yoghurt was supplemented with these products, this induced changes in the chemical, physicochemical and physical properties of the yoghurt. In the sensory analysis, all the formulations presented good acceptance. The results indicated that yoghurt could be considered as an interesting vehicle for YS and CAE, products with high levels of bioactive compounds that may exert beneficial effects on human health. Resumo O xarope de yacon (XY) e o extrato concentrado de caju (ECC) são produtos que apresentam elevadas concentrações de compostos bioativos, como fruto-oligossacarídeos e carotenoides, que exibem propriedades prebióticas e antioxidantes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto de XY e ECC nas características químicas, físicas, físico-químicas e sensoriais, quando estes produtos foram incorporados em um iogurte. Inicialmente, o XY e o ECC foram caracterizados através de análises químicas, físico-químicas, físicas e de compostos bioativos (carotenoides, fruto-oligossacarídeos, compostos fenólicos e atividade antioxidante). Após a caracterização, o XY e o ECC foram adicionados ao iogurte natural em diferentes concentrações, sendo estas: formulação A (sem adição de XY e ECC), formulação B (iogurte com adição de 20% de XY), formulação C (iogurte com adição de 20% de XY e 10% de ECC) e formulação D (10% de ECC e iogurte com adição de 20% de XY e 20% de ECC). As amostras foram então avaliadas sensorialmente com relação a aceitação (global, textura e aparência) e intenção de compra, além de serem caracterizadas através de análises químicas, físico-químicas e físicas. Os resultados indicaram que o XY e o ECC apresentam elevadas concentrações de compostos bioativos. Além disso, quando adicionados ao iogurte, a suplementação induziu mudanças nas propriedades químicas, físico-químicas e físicas do iogurte. Com relação aos testes sensoriais, todas as formulações apresentam uma boa aceitação sensorial. Esses resultados indicam que o iogurte pode ser considerado um veículo interessante para XY e ECC, que são produtos que apresentam elevadas concentrações de compostos bioativos que podem exercer efeitos benéficos à saúde humana.

The study investigated the influence of atmospheric plasma processing on cashew nut composition as well as on its allergenicity. The cashew nuts were processed by low-pressure plasma, using glow discharge plasma (80 W and 50 kHz power supply). Anacardic acids and allergens were quantified by HPLC and immunoassay, respectively. Additionally, the overall composition was evaluated by 1H qNMR. Increases in amounts of anacardic acids (15:1, 15:2, and 15:3) and fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, palmitic and stearic) were detected after all process conditions, with 70.92% of total variance captured using 2 LVs. The total amount of anacardic acids increased from 0.7 to 1.2 μg·mg−1 of nut. The major change was observed for anacardic acid (C15:3) with an increase from 0.2 to 0.55 μg/mg of nut for the samples treated with a flow of 10 mL·min−1 and 30 min of processing. On the other hand, the amount of sucrose decreased, from 33 to 18 mg·g−1 of nut, after all processing conditions. Plasma processing of cashew nuts did not affect binding of either the rabbit anti-cashew or human cashew allergic IgE binding. Among the treatments, 10 min of plasma processing at flow rate of 30 mL·min−1 of synthetic air followed by 20 min at flow rate 5.8 mL·min−1 had the least effect on nut composition as a whole.

Graphical abstract, Highlights • Cold plasma spark discharge was effective for PPO inactivation in cloudy apple juice. • Enzyme inactivation was dependent on treatment time. • No reactivation of PPO was found during storage in any plasma treated sample. • Cold plasma improved color of the juice after longest treatments. • Antioxidant capacity of the juice was increased after cold plasma treatments., Direct cold plasma treatment has been investigated as an alternative non-thermal technology as a means of maintaining and improving quality of fresh cloudy apple juice. Process variables studied included type of plasma discharge, input voltage and treatment time on polyphenol oxidase (PPO) inactivation. Spark discharge plasma at 10.5 kV for 5 min was the best treatment, with near total inactivation of PPO achieved, although good PPO inactivation was also recorded using shorter treatment times. Residual activity (RA) of PPO was 16 and 27.6% after 5 and 4 min of treatment respectively. This PPO inactivation was maintained throughout the storage trials, but decreased with samples treated for a shorter time. Plasma treatment improved key quality parameters of Golden delicious cloudy apple juice, with retention of critical quality parameters during extended storage trials. Color was the most noticeable change, which was enhanced with retention of a greener color. An increase of 69 and 64% was obtained in the total phenolic content after 4 and 5 min of treatment, respectively. Therefore, cold plasma was demonstrated to be a good alternative to traditional heat treatments for enhanced quality retention of fresh cloudy apple juice and over its storage.

Plant phytochemicals have been reported to prolong life by their protections against numerous human health and metabolic conditions. Cashew plant, being a potential source of bioactive compounds, has the ability to ameliorate various lifestyle related diseases. In the present study fruit extracts fromAnacardium occidentaleL,were analysed for their phytochemical and antibacterial properties. The antibacterial activity of methanol extract ofAnacardium occidentaleL (cashew apple extract) againstStreptococcus pyogenes, Micrococcus luteus, Salmonella typhimurium, Entrococcus faecaliandBacillus cereuswere investigated using the agar diffusion method. The result obtained showed that cashew apple extract gave the widest zone of inhibition against one of the five test organisms at the concentration of 1 mg/disk. However,Salmonella typhimuriumwas more sensitive to the extract. The phytochemical screening indicated the presence of total phenolic content (405.54±27.50 mg/g), total flavonoids (2.378±0.38 mg/g), and tannins (33.17±3.96 mg/g) in the cashew apple extract which confirm its inhibitory activities against the test organisms. This therefore, supports the traditional medicinal use ofAnacardium occidentaleL in the treatment of bacterial infections.

A partial cDNA sequence from Anacardium occidentale CCP 76 was obtained, encoding a GH19 chitinase (AoChi) belonging to class VI. AoChi exhibits distinct structural features in relation to previously characterized plant GH19 chitinases from classes I, II, IV and VII. For example, a conserved Glu residue at the catalytic center of typical GH19 chitinases, which acts as the proton donor during catalysis, is replaced by a Lys residue in AoChi. To verify if AoChi is a genuine chitinase or is a chitinase-like protein that has lost its ability to degrade chitin and inhibit the growth of fungal pathogens, the recombinant protein was expressed in Pichia pastoris, purified and biochemically characterized. Purified AoChi (45 kDa apparent molecular mass) was able to degrade colloidal chitin, with optimum activity at pH 6.0 and at temperatures from 30 °C to 50 °C. AoChi activity was completely lost when the protein was heated at 70 °C for 1 h or incubated at pH values of 2.0 or 10.0. Several cation ions (Al3+, Cd2+, Ca2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Rb+, Zn2+ and Hg2+), chelating (EDTA) and reducing agents (DTT, β-mercaptoethanol) and the denaturant SDS, drastically reduced AoChi enzymatic activity. AoChi chitinase activity fitted the classical Michaelis-Menten kinetics, although turnover number and catalytic efficiency were much lower in comparison to typical GH19 plant chitinases. Moreover, AoChi inhibited in vitro the mycelial growth of Lasiodiplodia theobromae, causing several alterations in hyphae morphology. Molecular docking of a chito-oligosaccharide in the substrate-binding cleft of AoChi revealed that the Lys residue (theoretical pKa = 6.01) that replaces the catalytic Glu could act as the proton donor during catalysis.

This work focused on identifying plant biomasses as potential sources of lipases and their use as biocatalysts for ethyl biodiesel production. To that end, plant extracts prepared from dormant and germinated seeds of eight local (Burkina Faso) oil-bearing biomasses were tested as a biocatalyst for the hydrolysis and ethanol transesterification of sunflower oil. The optimum transesterification conditions with the most active extracts were then determined. The results of the hydrolysis and transesterification tests showed that the plant extracts from germinated Jatropha curcas (JG) and Moringa oleifera (MG) seeds contained lipases whose catalytic activity could be utilized without prior purification. The highest hydrolysis yield obtained was 88% using the JG extracts and 62% with the MG extracts after 24 h of reaction at 40 °C and at pH 7. For transesterification, the highest ethyl ester yield obtained was 94% with the JG extracts and 48% with the MG extracts after 144 h at 37 °C, following two successive transesterification reactions. Using the plant extracts in transesterification called for the stepwise addition of ethanol in a TAG:ethanol molar ratio of 1:0.3 at 6 h intervals to overcome the inhibiting effect of high ethanol concentrations on the catalytic activity of the plant extracts. In addition, a study on the influence of the reaction conditions showed that water had a negligible effect on transesterification yield when its content in the ethanol was lower than or equal to 5% (v/v) and that adding silica to the reaction medium led to an increase in transesterification yield.

Cashew nuts are important both nutritionally and industrially, but can also cause food allergies in some in- dividuals. The present study aimed to assess the effect(s) of industrial processing on anacardic acids and al- lergens present in cashew nuts. Sample analyses were performed using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, SDS-PAGE and immunoassay. The anacardic acid concentration ranged from 6.2 to 82.6 mg/ g during processing, and this variation was attributed to cashew nut shell liquid incorporation during storage and humidification. Dehydrated and selected samples did not significantly differ in anacardic acid content, having values similar to the raw sample. SDS-PAGE and immunoassay analysis with rabbit polyclonal sera and human IgE indicated only minor differences in protein solubility and antibody binding following processing steps. The findings indicate that appreciable amounts of anacardic acid remain in processed nuts, and that changes to cashew allergens during industrial processing may only mildly affect antibody recognition.

The protein content and allergen composition was studied of cashews from 8 different origins (Benin, Brazil, Ghana, India, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Tanzania, Vietnam), subjected to different in-shell heat treatments (steamed, fried, drum-roasted). On 2D electrophoresis, 9 isoforms of Ana o 1, 29 isoforms of Ana o 2 (11 of the acidic subunit, 18 of the basic subunit), and 8 isoforms of the large subunit of Ana o 3 were tentatively identified. Based on 1D and 2D electrophoresis, no difference in allergen content (Ana o 1, 2, 3) was detected between the cashews of different origins (P > 0.5), some small but significant differences were detected in allergen solubility between differently heated cashews. No major differences in N- and C-terminal microheterogeneity of Ana o 3 were detected between cashews of different origins. Between the different heat treatments, no difference was detected in glycation, pepsin digestibility, or IgE binding of the cashew proteins.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) nut can trigger serious reactions in allergic patients, including anaphylaxis and death. Labelling the presence of cashew nuts in food products is mandatory and consequently, sensitive and specific analytical methods must be developed. In this study, Ana o allergen coding sequences have been sequenced in several cashew varieties. Two hydrolysis probes, locked nucleic acid (LNA) and TaqMan, have been designed and their efficiency, sensitivity, limit of detection and specificity for Ana o 1 coding-sequence detection have been compared. Reliable Real Time PCR assays to detect and quantify up to 10 ppm of cashew nuts in complex mixtures have been developed. Moreover, the influence of boiling and autoclave treatment on cashew nut detectability has been analysed by qPCR, showing both probes similar performance. This analytical method was able to detect up to 1000 ppm with good functionality in autoclave treated samples. Boiling did not affect cashew nut detectability. Both hydrolysis probes are suitable for Ana o 1 coding sequence detection. Applicability of the assay has been studied by analysing several food products, and comparing the results with those of a commercial ELISA kit.

The extracts obtained from Anacardium occidentale leaf were investigated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Bioassay-guided fractionation using DPPH autobiographic analysis of the EtOAc soluble fraction of the crude extract resulted in the isolation of agathisflavone ( 1 ) and a mixture of quercetin 3- O -rutinoside ( 2 ) and quercetin 3- O -rhamnoside ( 3 ). Characterization of the isolated compounds was carried out using nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D) and mass spectrometry. The antioxidant activities of the samples were determined using three complementary tests, namely; DPPH-radical scavenging, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The antimicrobial activity of the samples was evaluated using the disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The results indicated that the mixture (ratio 2:1) of compounds ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) was most active in its capacity to scavenge free radicals in the DPPH assay [IC 50 = 0.96 ± 0.01 μg/mL] compared to the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction, the ascorbic acid and quercetin standards. The mixture of compounds ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) exhibited the highest activities in the TAC assay (5332.00 ± 3.38 mg AAE/g, 8562.00 ± 5.43 mg QE/g) and FRAP assay (15,136.00 ± 7.14 mg AAE/g, 199,530.00 ± 94.12 mg QE/g) compared to the EtOAc fraction. The fractions of the extract showed comparatively better activities against gram-negative than the gram positive ones with the broadest spectrum of activities demonstrated for the ethyl acetate fraction. No inhibitions were obtained against the fungal strains investigated. The isolated compounds from the plant possess essentially inhibitory rather than cidal activities against these organisms with the Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBCs) >2.0 mg/mL in all cases. The mixture of compounds 2 and 3 showed higher activity than compound 1 with the former having MIC as low as 0.25 mg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Clostridium sporogens , 0.5 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and 1.0 mg/mL against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia strains investigated while the latter has an MIC of 1.0 mg/mL against most of the organisms. This study concluded that the extracts and isolated compounds had strong antioxidant and moderate antibacterial activities and could be effective in the management of oxidative stress related diseases. These findings also justified the use of this plant’s extracts in folk medicine.

Concentrating cashew apple juice alters the beverage aroma and flavor, compromising consumer acceptability of the concentrated beverage. To understand the mechanisms involved in these changes, this research characterized the dynamics of the loss and emergence of volatile compounds during cashew apple juice concentration, reporting their impact on beverage sensory quality. Fresh cashew apple juice (10.3°Brix) was concentrated in a thermal-siphon type evaporator operating in a closed system. Five samples were taken throughout the concentration process with the following soluble solids contents: 11.8°Brix, 14.9°Brix, 20.2°Brix, 29.6°Brix and 42.1°Brix. Trained judges rated the aroma note intensities, described as ?fresh cashew apple? and ?cooked? as perceived in the fresh and concentrated beverages. The headspace volatiles of the six samples were identified and quantified by GC?MS. The results indicated the esters as the major component in the fresh juice (226.46 μg kg− 1) representing 45.0% of the total mass of volatiles, followed by the terpenes (118.98 μg kg− 1), acids (45.23 μg kg− 1), aldehydes (39.10 μg kg− 1), alcohols (18.91 μg kg− 1), lactones (19.15 μg kg− 1), hydrocarbons (18.02 μg kg− 1) and ketones (11.05 μg kg− 1). Predictive statistical models (R2 > 0.956, p ≤ 0.002) revealed that on reaching 14.9°Brix, the ester concentration declined more than 90%, the terpene content almost 100%, alcohols 85%, aldehydes 80% and hydrocarbons 90%. At 14.9°Brix, the intensity of ?fresh cashew apple? aroma still predominated in the juice, but the panelists detected the presence of a weak ?cooked? aroma. Concentration of the beverage to 20.2°Brix or above expressively increased the cooked aroma intensity and the concentration of hydrocarbons, alcohols and some aldehydes usually associated with off-flavors such as pentanal and decanal. This raises the possibility that some of these compounds might have been formed during juice processing. Juice with better sensory quality could possibly be obtained by concentrating the beverage to levels below 20.2°Brix, recovering the esters that evaporated off the juice until ~ 15°Brix is reached, and re-adding them to the juice concentrated. Anacardic acids are the main constituents of natural cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), obtained via the extraction of cashew shells with hexane at room temperature. This raw material presents high technological potential due to its various biological properties. The main components of CNSL are the anacardic acids, salicylic acid derivatives presenting a side chain of fifteen carbon atoms with different degrees of unsaturation (monoene–15:1, diene–15:2, and triene–15:3). Each constituent was isolated by column chromatography using silica gel impregnated with silver nitrate. The structures of the compounds were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance through complete and unequivocal proton and carbon assignments. The effect of the side chain unsaturation was also evaluated in relation to antioxidant, antifungal and anticholinesterase activities, and toxicity against Artemia salina. The triene anacardic acid provided better results in antioxidant activity assessed by the inhibition of the free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), higher cytotoxicity against A. salina, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition. Thus, increasing the unsaturation of the side chain of anacardic acid increases its action against free radicals, AChE enzyme, and A. salina nauplii. In relation to antifungal activity, an inverse result was obtained, and the linearity of the molecule plays an important role, with monoene being the most active. In conclusion, the changes in structure of anacardic acids, which cause differences in polarity, contribute to the increase or decrease in the biological activity assessed.

In tropical America, principally in Northeastern Brazil, the leaf extract ofAnacardium occidentaleis traditionally used for treatment of different diseases. However, chemical and biological properties and activities ofAnacardium occidentaleare poorly investigated and known. Here, we evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities“in vitro”of leaf extract fromAnacardium occidentale.Our results show that leaf extract exhibits antioxidant activity when used to treat RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Antioxidant effects were observed by decrease in oxidative damage in macrophage cells treated with 0.5 µg/mL and 5 µg/mL of leaf extract. Moreover, leaf extract reversed oxidative damage and inflammatory parameters induced in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Leaf extract at 0.5 µg/mL and 5 µg/mL was able to inhibit release of TNF-αand IL-1βin LPS-stimulated cells. Taken together, our results indicate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of leaf extract fromAnacardium occidentaleand reveal the positive effects that intake of these products can mediate in biological system.

The purpose of this work was to obtain extracts from Anacardium occidentale leaves using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The use of ethanol and isopropyl alcohol as co-solvents was evaluated. Mass transfer kinetics experiments were performed, and overall extraction curves were modeled. SFE process was compared with different low pressure solvent extraction processes in terms of global yield and the composition of the extract. The techniques used as low pressure solvent extraction processes were: Soxhlet extraction, agitated bed extraction, ultrasound assisted extraction using ethanol as the solvent and hydrodistillation. The extracts were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) using different eluents. Finally, the economic evaluation was conducted using the software SuperPro designer 6.0 ® to simulate the process and to estimate the cost of manufacturing (COM) of SFE extracts. The results indicated the presence of essential oils, flavonoids and antioxidant compounds in all the extracts. The higher yield of extract was obtained with the ultrasound assisted extraction. However, the samples with more functional compounds were verified in the SFE extracts and the extracts showed low COM. The model that best described the overall extraction curves for the SFE process was the Sovova model, which showed minimum values for the sum of the squares of the residues.

This work aimed to evaluate the thermostability of antioxidant (superoxide dismutase - SOD, catalase - CAT and ascorbate peroxidase - APX) and deteriorative (guaiacol peroxidase - G-POD, polyphenoloxidase - PPO, pectin-methylesterase - PME and polygalacturonase - PG) enzymes from soursop and cashew apple juices. Juices were prepared homogenizing ripe fruit pulps and submitting to different thermal treatments (55, 65, 75, 85 and 95°C) for different time period (1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min) then enzymatic activities were evaluated. The treatments at 55°C for soursop juice and at 75°C for cashew apple juice presented the best results, considering the low residual activities for deteriorative enzymes and the retained activity of SOD. Our results suggest appropriate technological condition to thermal processing from soursop and cashew apple juice whereby ensuring quality beyond their functionality. RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a estabilidade térmica de enzimas antioxidantes (superóxido dismutase - SOD, catalase - CAT e ascorbato peroxidase - APX) e deteriorantes (guaiacol peroxidase - G-POD, polifenol oxidase - PPO, pectinametilesterase - PME e poligalacturonase - PG) em sucos de graviola e de caju. Os sucos foram preparados homogeneizando a polpa das frutas maduras e submetendo-os a diferentes tratamentos térmicos (55, 65, 75, 85 e 95°C) em diferentes períodos de tempo (1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 30 minutos) e, posteriormente, as atividades enzimáticas foram avaliadas. Os tratamentos a 55°C para o suco de graviola e a 75°C para o suco de caju apresentaram os melhores resultados, considerando as baixas atividades residuais para as enzimas deteriorantes e manutenção da SOD. Nossos resultados sugerem condições tecnológicas adequadas para o processamento térmico do suco de graviola e de caju, pelo qual é assegurada a sua qualidade, além de sua funcionalidade.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os efeitos da salinidade em três estádios de desenvolvimento (ED) da plântula de cajueiro anão-precoce, a saber, germinação, emergência e estabelecimento da plântula, tentando estabelecer uma relação entre o desenvolvimento e o acúmulo de íons nos tecidos da plântula. Para isso, castanhas do clone CCP-06 de cajueiro anão precoce foram semeadas em bandejas de plástico contendo vermiculita umedecida com água destilada (0,0 dS m-1) ou soluções de NaCl com condutividades elétricas variando entre 3,0 e 18,0 dS m-1 e mantidas em casa de vegetação. Determinaram-se a percentagem de plântulas que alcançaram os ED estudados e o tempo e a velocidade com que isso ocorreu, assim como a matéria seca dos cotilédones e eixo embrionário e os teores de Na+, K+ e Cl- do eixo embrionário. A salinidade retardou o desenvolvimento das plântulas nos ED correspondentes à emergência e estabelecimento, entretanto apenas neste último ED é que a percentagem final de plântulas foi reduzida, acompanhada pela inibição da depleção das reservas cotiledonares e decréscimo da massa seca do eixo embrionário. Em todos os ED, os teores de Na+ e Cl- aumentaram com a salinidade, mas isso foi mais pronunciado nas plântulas estabelecidas, nas quais houve redução dos teores de K+. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que as plântulas de cajueiro anão precoce são mais sensíveis à salinidade durante a etapa de estabelecimento e que os efeitos deletérios desse estresse são mediados, pelo menos em parte, pelo acúmulo excessivo de íons Na+ e Cl- na plântula. We investigated the effects of salinity on (germination, emergence and establishment of dwarf-cashew seedling) trying to establish a link between development and ion accumulation in the seedling tissues. In a greenhouse, cashew nuts were sown in trays containing vermiculite moistened with distilled water (0.0 dS m-1) or with NaCl solutions with electrical conductivities ranging between 3.0 to 18.0 dS m-1. We determined the percentage of seedlings that reached the development stages studied and the time and speed at which this occurred, as well as cotyledon and embryonic axis dry mass and the Na+, K+ and Cl- contents of embryonic axis. Salinity delayed emergence and establishment seedling, however, only the final percentage of established seedlings was reduced, accompanied by inhibition of depletion of reserves and a decrease in embryonic axis dry mass. Na+ and Cl- contents increased with salinity, but this was more pronounced in established seedlings, in which there was a reduction in content of K+. Results suggest that dwarf cashew seedlings are more sensitive to salinity during the establishment stage and that deleterious effects of salt stress are mediated, at least in part, by excessive accumulation of Na+ and Cl- in the seedling tissues.

Cashew gum (CG) was sulfated in pyridine:formamide using chlorosulfonic acid as the reagent. Confirmation of sulfation was obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy through the presence of an asymmetrical S=O stretching vibration at 1259 cm-1. The degrees of substitution were 0.02, 0.24 and 0.88 determined from the sulfur percentage. 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data showed that the sulfation occurred at primary carbons. An increase of at least 4% of the solution viscosity was observed due to sulfation. The thermal gravimetric curves (TGA) indicate that the derivatives are stable up to ca. 200ºC. The sulfated CG is compared to carboxymethylated CG in order to verify the possibility of the use of the former in the preparation of polyelectrolyte complexes; the latter is already being used for this application. Os graus de sulfatação foram de 0,02, 0,24 e 0,88, determinados pela percentagem de enxofre. Os dados de ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) 1D e 2D mostram que a sulfatação ocorreu nos carbonos primários do polissacarídeo. Um aumento de no mínimo 4% na viscosidade da solução foi observado após a sulfatação. Análise termogravimétrica (TGA) indica que o derivado é estável até cerca de 200ºC. A comparação entre os derivados sulfatados e carboximetilados foi feita no intuito de verificar a possibilidade de formação de complexos polieletrolíticos, já realizada com os carboximetilados.

Anacardium occidentale L. Anacardiaceae, known as cashew, commonly found in northeastern of Brazil, has high levels of secondary metabolites, particularly tannins, used as raw material for herbal medicines. An efficient alternative to decontaminate plant products is the total sterilization or reduction of the initial microbial count, the process of gamma irradiation with 60Co. The objective of this study was to analyze the antimicrobial activity of crude extracts of bark and leaves of A. occidentale, based on the quantification of total phenols and tannins, before and after exposure to gamma radiation from 60Co. The extracts were obtained in the laboratory by cold maceration in ethanol, filtered and dryness. They were divided into non-irradiated control group (0 kGy) and irradiated: groups exposed to gamma radiation at doses of 5, 7.5 and 10 kGy. The total phenols was obtained by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and tannins, by the precipitation of casein. The antimicrobial potential activities of these extracts were also evaluated. The results showed that gamma radiation doses employed in this study did not influence statistically the percentage of total phenols and tannins in the bark extracts, at levels ranging from 5.73±0.14 and 5.20±0.14, respectively. The use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) has been banned as feed additives in many countries, therefore the alternatives need to be found. An in vitro experiment was conducted to study the potential of combination of some plant extract to inhibit growth of pathogen bateria that normally occur in the poultry gastro intestinal tract.The combination of three plants bioactives (liquid smoke of cashew shells of Anacardium occidentaleor CLS, Phyllanthus niruri L. extract (EM), and Synzygium aromaticum extract (EDC) were formulated and evaluated for its effectiveness to inhibit growth of Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. in vitro.The mixtures (KE) were then made in 3 different concentrations, i.e. 100 % KE, 50% KE, and 25% KE and studied their effectiveness to inhibit growth of E. coli or Salmonella sp. using microplate reader method. The results showed that the higher the concentration of the bioactive combination (KE100) the higher the ability to inhibit the growth of E. coli or Salmonella sp. The combination of bioactive substances CAM, EM, and EDC more effectively than Zn-bacitracin antibiotics to inhibit the growth of E. coli and Salmonella sp. The optimum concentration of KE with the similar effectiveness as the AGP was 25%. It was concluded that the combination of CAM, EM, and EDC was able to inhibit the growth of E. coli and even capable to eliminate the presence of Salmonella sp. In the biological assay, a combination of CAM, EM, and EDC either extract or powder form, high dose, medium or low does not affect the weight of the spleen, bursa fabricius, and blood profile. The best combination of CAM, EM, and EDC extracts to decreases the total bacterial population and E. coli was middle dose ie 0.0625% (extract) and 0.625% (powder). Likewise for live weight gain that was a good dose of extract or powder form can replace antibiotics. It was concluded that combinations of CAM, EM, and EDC had potential as a substitute for AGP in poultry feed, especially chickens.

The biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) composition of ambient air at a rural field site near Djougou, Benin has been studied as part of the AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis) project. Ambient air was sampled during day and night during the period 2 June 2006 to 13 June 2006. Gas samples from within the forest canopy and from branch and cuvette enclosure systems for four vegetation species were also obtained and emissions flux estimates made. All samples were analysed for the presence of isoprene, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes by either gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF/MS) or comprehensive gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOF/MS). Concentrations of isoprene ranged from a few tens of pptV to in excess of 3000 pptV. Similar concentration ranges for certain monoterpenes were also observed. Limonene was seen at a maximum concentration in ambient air of 5000 pptV. The combination of leaf-level observations and direct analysis of dried vegetation samples suggests that emissions of terpene species from indigenous species are unlikely to account for the unexpectedly high ambient concentrations of monoterpenes. Leaf scale emission measurements and biological sample analysis indicated that \\textit{Anacardium occidentale}, a non-native crop species found throughout the tropics, was the dominant source of monoterpenes at this location. These preliminary findings suggest that activities involving species replacement have potential implications for the chemistry of the African troposphere that have not been widely considered previously.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de cálcio pós-colheita nas características químicas, físico-químicas e nos teores de cálcio em pedúnculos de cajueiro-anão precoce CCP-76, submetidos a armazenamento refrigerado sob atmosfera modificada. Os cajus foram imersos em água e em soluções com diferentes concentrações de cloreto de cálcio (0,5, 1 e 2% p/v), por dois minutos. Os cajus foram acondicionados em bandejas de isopor, envolvidos em filme de PVC e armazenados a 5±1°C e 88±3% de umidade relativa, durante 25 dias. Os teores de sólidos solúveis e açúcares solúveis diminuíram durante o armazenamento. Os pedúnculos de caju, independentemente da dose de cálcio, apresentaram tendência à diminuição da acidez e da vitamina C com o armazenamento, enquanto o pH apresentou um pequeno e gradual crescimento. Não houve variação nas antocianinas, nos pseudofrutos de caju tratados com cálcio. Verificaram-se pequenas reduções nas frações fenólicas menos polimerizadas, durante o armazenamento. O cálcio aplicado nas doses de 0,5 e 2% aumentou os teores de cálcio nos pedúnculos até o 15o dia, com diminuição posterior até o final do experimento. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of postharvest calcium applications on chemical and physico-chemical characteristics, quality atributes and calcium tissue concentracionário of early dwarf cashew pseudofruits (Anacardium occidentale L.), stored under refrigeration and modified atmosphere. The cashews were immersed in water and in different calcium chloride solution concentrations (0.5, 1 and 2% (w/v)) for two minutes. Cashews were put in polysterene trays, packed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and storaged at 5±1°C, 88±3% RH for 25 days. The total soluble solids (Brix) and soluble sugars decreased during storage. The pseudofruits, independent of the chloride calcium concentration, showed a tendency to decrease the total titratable acidity and vitamin C, and an increase of pH during storage. The anthocyanins content showed no variation in treated cashew pseudofruits. Small reductions in less polymerized polyphenolic fraction were observed during the storage period. The chloride calcium concentrations 0.5 and 2.0% slightly increased tissue calcium concentration until the 15o storage day, and decreased, afterwards, until the end of the experiment.

Cashew gum (CG), an exudate polysaccharide from Anacardium ocidentale trees, was oxidized with TEMPO reagent and the 7product (CGOX) characterized by spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR and NMR), chromatographic analyses (HPLC and GPC), viscosity measurements and thermal analysis (TGA). The yield of the reaction product was 96%. The uronic acid content in starting gum (7.2 m%) was increased to 36 m%. The degree of oxidation based on free galactose and glucose units was 68%. NMR data show that oxidation occurred preferentially at primary carbons of galactose units. High degradation degree after oxidation was estimated by the difference on the expected and observed etaCGOX/etaCG ratio. The presence of organic and inorganic impurities in the new polyelectrolyte was detected by TGA. A less thermally stable cashew gum is formed after the oxidation with TEMPO based on initial decomposition temperature and IPDT. A goma do cajueiro, um polissacarídeo exsudado da árvore Anacardium ocidentale, foi oxidada com o reagente TEMPO e o produto (CGOX) foi caracterizado por técnicas espectroscópicas (FT-IR e RMN), análises cromatográficas (HPLC e GPC), viscosidade e análise térmica (TGA). O rendimento do produto da reação foi de 96%. O teor de ácido urônico da goma nativa (7,2%) aumentou para 36% após a reação. O grau de oxidação, tendo como base as unidades de galactose e glucose livres, foi de 68%. Os dados de RMN mostraram que a oxidação ocorreu preferencialmente nos carbonos primários das unidades de galactose. A grande diferença entre o valor esperado de etaCGOX/etaCG e o valor observado indica que a degradação, durante a oxidação, ocorreu em grande extensão. A presença de impurezas orgânicas e inorgânicas no novo polieletrólito foi detectada por TGA. A goma do cajueiro após a modificação com TEMPO apresentou mais baixa estabilidade térmica que a goma nativa, indicada pelos valores de temperatura inicial de decomposição e IPDT.

Background: The anti-malarials quinine and artemisinin were isolated from traditionally used plants (Cinchona spp. and Artemisia annua, respectively). The synthetic quinoline anti-malarials (e.g. chloroquine) and semi-synthetic artemisinin derivatives (e.g. artesunate) were developed based on these natural products. Malaria is endemic to the Amazon region where Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax drug-resistance is of concern. There is an urgent need for new anti-malarials. Traditionally used Amazonian plants may provide new treatments for drug-resistant P. vivax and P. falciparum. Herein, the in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity and cytotoxicity of medicinal plant extracts were investigated. Methods: Sixty-nine extracts from 11 plant species were prepared and screened for in vitro activity against P. falciparum K1 strain and for cytotoxicity against human fibroblasts and two melanoma cell lines. Median inhibitory concentrations (IC50) were established against chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum W2 clone using monoclonal anti-HRPII (histidine-rich protein II) antibodies in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Extracts were evaluated for toxicity against murine macrophages (IC50) and selectivity indices (SI) were determined. Three extracts were also evaluated orally in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice. Results: High in vitro antiplasmodial activity (IC50 = 6.4-9.9 μg/mL) was observed for Andropogon leucostachyus aerial part methanol extracts, Croton cajucara red variety leaf chloroform extracts, Miconia nervosa leaf methanol extracts, and Xylopia amazonica leaf chloroform and branch ethanol extracts. Paullinia cupana branch chloroform extracts and Croton cajucara red variety leaf ethanol extracts were toxic to fibroblasts and or melanoma cells. Xylopia amazonica branch ethanol extracts and Zanthoxylum djalma-batistae branch chloroform extracts were toxic to macrophages (IC50 = 6.9 and 24.7 μg/mL, respectively). Andropogon leucostachyus extracts were the most selective (SI >28.2) and the most active in vivo (at doses of 250 mg/kg, 71 % suppression of P. berghei parasitaemia versus untreated controls). Conclusions: Ethnobotanical or ethnopharmacological reports describe the anti-malarial use of these plants or the antiplasmodial activity of congeneric species. No antiplasmodial activity has been demonstrated previously for the extracts of these plants. Seven plants exhibit in vivo and or in vitro anti-malarial potential. Future work should aim to discover the anti-malarial substances present. © 2015 Lima et al.

RESUMEN: Se evaluó un antioxidante natural extraído de la cáscara de la nuez de marañón (CNSL) para mejorar la estabilidad oxidativa del biodiesel de jatropha. Mediante el uso del equipo Rancimat Metrohm 873, se evaluó la estabilidad oxidativa a diferentes temperaturas, del biodiesel de jatropha puro y con adición de diferentes concentraciones de CNSL y de Propil Galato. Se encontró que a medida que aumenta la concentración de antioxidante, hay un incremento gradual en el tiempo de inducción, y a mayor temperatura de evaluación ocurre una disminución de esta variable. Se realizó el análisis estadístico de los resultados mediante tablas ANOVA y se describió la cinética de oxidación por la ley de velocidad de primer orden, se ajustó la velocidad de reacción de consumo de CNSL en el biodiesel de jatropha con la ecuación de Arrhenius y se obtuvo una energía de activación de 103.94 KJ/mol. ABSTRACT: A natural antioxidant extracted from the shell of the cashew nut (CNSL) to improve the oxidative stability of jatropha biodiesel was evaluated. The oxidation stability at different temperatures of pure jatropha biodiesel and biodiesel with different concentrations of CNSL and propyl gallate was evaluated using the Metrohm 873 Rancimat equipment. It was found that there is a gradual increase in the induction time with the amount of antioxidant, and evaluation at higher temperature cause a decrease in this variable. Statistical analysis of the results was performed using ANOVA tables and oxidation can be described using a first order kinetics. International audience; Introduction. La pomme de cajou, souvent considérée comme un sous-produit del’industrie de la noix de cajou, reste très peu valorisée. Parmi les diverses options technologiques possibles pour la clarification des jus de fruits pulpeux, la microfiltration tangentielle sur membrane minérale est un procédé particulièrement prometteur. L’objectif de notre travail a donc été d’évaluer l’intérêt de ce procédé pour la production de jus de pomme de cajou clarifié. Matériel et méthodes. Des essais de filtration ont été réalisés à 30 °C sur une installation pilote de laboratoire munie de diverses membranes tubulaires en alumine. Quatre membranes ont été testées, différenciées par le diamètre moyen de leurs pores [(0,1 ; 0,2 ; 0,8 et 1,4) μm]. Les performances (densité de flux de perméat) et la composition du jus clarifié obtenu (tannins condensés, acidité titrable, acide ascorbique, pH, turbidité, couleur et extrait sec soluble) ont été comparées pour chacune de ces membranes. L’utilisation d’un prétraitement enzymatique de liquéfaction couplé à la microfiltration a égalementété abordée. Résultats et discussion. Les densités de flux de perméat obtenues ont été comprises entre (36 et 79) L·h–1·m–2. Dans les conditions testées, les membranes de diamètre de pores de (0,1 et 0,2) μm ont conduit aux meilleurs résultats. Le couplage de la microfiltration avec un prétraitement enzymatique de liquéfaction a amélioré les performances de la filtration de (30 à 60) %. Toutes les membranes ont permis d’obtenir un jus parfaitement limpide dont la teneur en acide ascorbique a été très voisine de celle du jus frais. En revanche, les composés phénoliques présents en grande quantité dans le jus de pomme de cajou brut ont été presque totalement éliminés au cours de l’opération permettant ainsi de diminuer considérablement l’astringeance du jus. Conclusion. Nos travaux ont vérifié le potentiel du procédé de microfiltration tangentielle sur la production de jus clarifié de pomme de cajou. Néanmoins, avant d’envisager une future application industrielle, les conditions de traitement devront être optimisées et les qualités nutritionnelle et sensorielle du jus clarifié devront être mieux caractérisées.
