Abstract This study focused on identifying and characterizing 1,3-diphenylpropane derivatives from flavonoids that inhibit human indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (hIDO1) enzymes, which play a role in immune regulation and are associated with various diseases. A series of isolated metabolites (1–7) demonstrated modest to high inhibition of hIDO1, with binding degree values ranging from 26.31 to 72.17%. In particular, during a target-based screening of natural products using hIDO1, kazinol J (6, a 1,3-diphenylpropane derivative) was found to potently inhibit hIDO1, with a binding degree of 72.17% at 1 ppm. Kazinol J (6) showed concentration-dependent and mixed inhibition kinetics and achieved slow and time-dependent inhibition of hIDO1. Additionally, docking simulations were performed to evaluate the inhibitory potential and binding interactions of the compounds with hIDO1. These findings suggest that these 1,3-diphenylpropane derivatives can serve as therapeutic agents for conditions involving hIDO1 dysregulation, such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases.

Abstract The diterpene glycosyltransferase UGT76G1, derived from Stevia rebaudiana, plays a pivotal role in the biosynthesis of rebaudioside A, a natural sugar substitute. Nevertheless, its potential for industrial application is limited by certain enzymatic characteristics, notably thermostability. To enhance the thermostability and enzymatic activity, we employed a computational design strategy, merging stabilizing mutation scanning with a Rosetta-based protein design protocol. Compared to UGT76G1, the designed variant 76_4 exhibited a 9 °C increase in apparent Tm, a 2.55-fold increase rebaudioside A production capacity, and a substantial 11% reduction in the undesirable byproduct rebaudioside I. Variant 76_7 also showed a 1.91-fold enhancement rebaudioside A production capacity, which was maintained up to 55 °C, while the wild-type lost most of its activity. These results underscore the efficacy of structure-based design in introducing multiple mutations simultaneously, which significantly improves the enzymatic properties of UGT76G1. This strategy provides a method for the development of efficient, thermostable enzymes for industrial applications.

Abstract This study aimed to select the optimal microbial agents for ammonia gas reduction in Chinese cabbage cultivation and evaluate their ammonia reduction efficiency. By selecting the optimum microorganism to reduce ammonia emissions, the ammonia emission reduction efficiencies of the nitrification microorganisms, Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. faecalis and Brevibacillus sp. were 21 and 31%, respectively, which were superior to those of other microorganisms. The best ammonia emission reduction efficiency of the acid-producing microorganisms was 55%. The optimum mixing ratio of microbial agent for removing ammonia gas emitted from NPK-containing soil was: acid-producing microorganism:Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. faecalis:Brevibaillus sp. = 0.70:0.15:0.15. The optimum treatment amount was 500 L/ha, and the optimum number of microbial agents was basal fertilization (also known as pre-planting fertilization) once and additional fertilization three times, for a total of four times. The reduction efficiency of ammonia emissions from NPK-containing soil under optimum conditions in cabbage cultivation was 27% lower than that of the control (only NPK-containing soil). Therefore, the microbial agent developed in this study can be utilized to effectively reduce the emission of ammonia, a secondary fine particle precursor, while maintaining crop yield in agricultural fields.

A ventilator central monitoring system (VCMS) that can efficiently respond to and treat patients’ respiratory issues in intensive care units (ICUs) is critical. Using Internet of Things (IoT) technology without loss or delay in patient monitoring data, clinical staff can overcome spatial constraints in patient respiratory management by integrated monitoring of multiple ventilators and providing real-time information through remote mobile applications. This study aimed to establish a VCMS and assess its effectiveness in an ICU setting. A VCMS comprises central monitoring and mobile applications, with significant real-time information from multiple patient monitors and ventilator devices stored and managed through the VCMS server, establishing an integrated monitoring environment on a web-based platform. The developed VCMS was analyzed in terms of real-time display and data transmission. Twenty-one respiratory physicians and staff members participated in usability and satisfaction surveys on the developed VCMS. The data transfer capacity derived an error of approximately 10−7, and the difference in data transmission capacity was approximately 1.99×10−7±9.97×10−6 with a 95% confidence interval of −1.16×10−7 to 5.13×10−7 among 18 ventilators and patient monitors. The proposed VCMS could transmit data from various devices without loss of information within the ICU. The medical software validation, consisting of 37 tasks and 9 scenarios, showed a task completion rate of approximately 92%, with a 95% confidence interval of 88.81–90.43. The satisfaction survey consisted of 23 items and showed results of approximately 4.66 points out of 5. These results demonstrated that the VCMS can be readily used by clinical ICU staff, confirming its clinical utility and applicability. The proposed VCMS can help clinical staff quickly respond to the alarm of abnormal events and diagnose and treat based on longitudinal patient data. The mobile applications overcame space constraints, such as isolation to prevent respiratory infection transmission of clinical staff for continuous monitoring of respiratory patients and enabled rapid consultation, ensuring consistent care.

This study investigated the effect of digital therapeutics on ROM, flexibility, dynamic balance, satisfaction, and adherence. A sample of 34 volunteers was randomly assigned into a Digital Therapeutic Group (DTG) (n = 17) and a Non-Digital Therapeutic Group (NDG) (n = 17). The groups performed four calf muscle stretches and two hamstring stretches for 4 weeks. Flexibility and balance were evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the exercise program. A survey was conducted to assess subjects’ satisfaction, and exercise performance record papers and video records were assessed for exercise adherence. The paired t-test was used to compare the two populations before and after the program. The independent t-test was used to compare the change scores between groups. In the pre- and post-comparison within each group, the DTG group showed significant differences in all items except the dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) (p < 0.05). The left straight leg raise (SLR) was significantly different (p < 0.05), and there was a significant difference in exercise satisfaction and participation between the two groups (p < 0.05). DTG showed improved flexibility, dynamic balance, and higher exercise satisfaction and adherence than NDG. The application, providing lower extremity stretching, can improve dorsiflexion ROM, flexibility of the lower extremity, dynamic balance, exercise satisfaction, and exercise adherence.

Removal of agricultural pipes used in crop support and greenhouse agriculture is manpower-intensive. However, most agricultural workers are elderly. Therefore, auxiliary devices should be used to allow pipe removal with as little force as possible. In this study, the design parameters of an extraction device were optimized within constraints to minimize the force required to remove agricultural pipes. The optimization parameters are the length of each link and the initial link angle of the device. The driving force, according to the design parameters, was calculated by applying the theory of kinematics. An optimal design plan was derived using an optimization algorithm to minimize the force driving the device within the desired constraint. As a result of the optimization, it was confirmed that the force required to remove the pipe was reduced by 87.1% compared with the initial design value and was designed to suit the user’s convenience.

The proportion of fat content in the body is important in the classification and grading of disease. In a clinical situation, the image characteristics of adipose tissue are used as information in diagnosing disease. Therefore, the imaging characteristics of adipose tissue on ultrasound images should be understood in a comprehensive manner. In this study, we describe the imaging characteristics of adipose tissue using ultrasound phantoms representing three different fat fractions. The three fat fractions were 0%, 40%, and 80%, and the phantoms consisted of agarose gel containing either distilled water or one of two emulsions. To characterize the fat content, the gel phantoms were scanned using an Accuvix V10 ultrasound system. Both the brightness of the ultrasound image and the attenuation of the ultrasound echo increased with increasing fat content. Deep structures could not be observed clearly in areas with high fat content. Both pure water and fat appeared to be echo-free. Pure water displayed acoustic enhancement, while fat displayed acoustic shadowing. However, the emulsion appeared to be hyperechoic because of the difference in acoustic impedance between water and fat. The results show that well-characterized fat fraction images can potentially be used to understand the characteristics of adipose tissue human body on ultrasound.

The objective of this study is to provide a process that can be applied in preparation for the introduction of an efficient and systematic pavement management system. This process includes features for selecting pavement segmentation (for management) and priority based on a cumulative difference approach(CDA), starting from the development of an index that reflects the pavement condition and current distribution status. For the index, which can reflect the current pavement conditions of sections to be managed, this study proposes a basic model form and establishes a simple modeling plan that uses only 3 points (maximum value, minimum value, and management standard) for typical flaws. For pavement segmentation, this study establishes a plan that uses a moving average combined with a minimum maintenance length standard to reflect existing condition distribution characteristics as much as possible. Finally, for priority, this study establishes a plan that performs selections using the averages of the index values of the sections that require maintenance, as determined via the segmentation step.

The inevitable bleeding and infections caused by disasters and accidents are the main causes of death owing to extrinsic trauma. Hemostatic agents are often used to quickly suppress bleeding and infection, and they can solve this problem in a short time. Silk fibroin (SF) has poor processibility in water, owing to incomplete solubility therein. In this study, aiming to overcome this disadvantage, a modified silk fibroin (SF-BGE), easily soluble in water, was prepared by introducing butyl glycidyl ether (BGE) into its side chain. Subsequently, a small amount of tannic acid (TA) was introduced to prepare an SF-BGE /TA solution, and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were added to the solution to form the coordination bonds between the ZnO and TA, leading to an SF-based nanocomposite hydrogel. A structural characterization of the SF-BGE, SF-BGE/TA, SF-BGE/TA/ZnO, and the coordination bonds between ZnO/TA was observed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and the phase change was observed by rheological measurements. The pore formation of the SF-BGE/TA/ZnO hydrogel and dispersibility of ZnO were verified through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cytocompatible and hemostatic performances of the SF-BGE/TA/ZnO NPs composite hydrogels were evaluated, and the hydrogels showed superior hemostatic and cytocompatible activities. Therefore, the SF-based nanocomposite hydrogel is considered as a promising material for hemostasis.

While dismantling nuclear power plants, the reactor vessel internal is cut underwater using mechanical and thermal cutting. In laser thermal cutting, assist gas must be used to remove melted metal; consequently, a large number of radioactive aerosols can be generated. To reduce the generation of aerosols, the assist gas pressure should be lowered. However, below the pressure limit, the molten metal is not well-removed from the cut surface and fails to cut. In this study, an assist gas visualization experiment was performed to find a condition for the gas to flow well inside the cut surface, even at low pressures. The top kerf width, nozzle type, distance between nozzle and specimen, and assist gas pressure were selected as process parameters, and in the case of large top kerf width condition, assist gas was able to penetrate deeply. In the actual laser-cutting experiment, the laser beam focus position was set to −20 mm and −30 mm. In the case of −30 mm, the top kerf width was widened due to the characteristics of the laser beam profile, and cutting was successful even though the assist gas pressure was lowered by 20%.

In South Korea, Honam High-Speed Railway has a relatively large residual settlement issue and high fines content has been pointed out as one of the causes. Design guidelines regulate not to use soils containing fines content higher than 25%. However, there is no background information on the effect of fines content on settlement. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate compressional behavior according to fines content using sand and kaolinite. Oedometer test results showed that the compression index is lowest with fines content of 15% to 20% at which the mixture produced maximum density. The optimum fines content for inducing low settlement would be 15% to 20% for the sand–kaolinite mixture. Transition fines content (TFC), which shows sand-like to claylike behavior, was observed to have between 21% and 26% of fines content. Critical fines content (fcrit) where a minimum void ratio occurs was estimated as 21.67%. These behavioral changes appear when fines content is greater than the optimum fines content. SEM also shows that the kaolinite particles were overlapped, creating flat surfaces with a fines content higher than 30%, and showing clay-like behavior. Based on the analysis results, engineers can simply identify the behavior of embankment materials to ensure optimum fines content and consequently minimize long-term settlement potential.

With nuclear power plants worldwide approaching their design lifespans, plans for decommissioning nuclear power plants are increasing, and interest in decommissioning technology is growing. Laser cutting, which is suitable for high-speed cutting in underwater environments and is amenable to remote control and automation, has attracted considerable interest. In this study, the effects of laser cutting were analyzed with respect to relevant parameters to achieve high-quality underwater laser cutting for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. The kerf width, drag line, and roughness of the specimens during the high-power laser cutting of 50 mm-thick stainless steel in an underwater environment were analyzed based on key parameters (focal position, laser power, and cutting speed) to determine the conditions for satisfactory cutting surface quality. The results indicated that underwater laser cutting with a speed of up to 130 mm/min was possible at a focal position of 30 mm and a laser power of 9 kW; however, the best-quality cutting surface was obtained at a cutting speed of 30 mm/min.

Studies involving the mechanical properties of high-strength steel (HSS) at elevated temperatures have received considerable attention in recent years. However, current research on HSS at high temperatures is lacking. As a result, the design of fire-protective steel structures with high standards is not sufficiently conservative or safe. This study investigates the effect that elevated temperatures have on the mechanical properties of ASTM A572 Gr. 50 and 60 steels. Reduction factors for the yield strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus were derived and compared with the standard (AISC, EN1993-1-2) and previous studies (NIST). This study also provides extensive data on the reduction factors for the yield strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus of mild steel (MS), HSS, and very-high-strength steel (VHSS). The reduction factor for the yield strength was analyzed by expanding the strain level up to 20%. Equations for the yield strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus were proposed. In future studies, various strains should be analyzed according to the grade of the steel, with the derivation of a reduction factor that considers the plastic strain of the steel. Hence, the findings reported in this study generated a database that can be applied to fire safety design or performance-based fire-resistant design.

In the construction industry, the lack of supply and demand for high-quality natural aggregates is a problem. In the case of South Korea, according to data from the Ministry of Environment, it is predicted that the depletion of aggregate resources will occur in 20 years, considering the amount of aggregate used in construction every year and the amount of natural aggregate. Therefore, it is necessary to develop recycled aggregates that can replace natural aggregates for construction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of recyclable air-cooled slag (ACS) aggregates as a substitute material for natural aggregates applied to rural-road pavement concrete. That is, the applicability of rural-road pavement concrete is evaluated by evaluating the strength and durability of rural-road pavement concrete to which an ACS aggregate is applied. Durability was assessed in terms of the chloride ion diffusion, repeated wetting-drying, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and repeated freezing-thawing tests. The test result showed that the diffusion coefficient of the mixture to which the ACS aggregate was applied was slightly larger. In addition, the diffusion coefficient was slightly larger in the case of applying the air-cooled slag coarse aggregate (GG) than in the case of applying the air-cooled slag fine aggregate (GS). The results of abrasion and impact resistance tests of ACS-aggregate-incorporated rural-road concrete indicated that abrasion and impact resistance decreased as the aggregate content increased. The ACS retained some of the properties of the blast furnace slag. Thus, in repetitive wetting-drying tests, which can cause changes in chemical properties, the ACS aggregate increased the concrete’s long-term residual strength. In addition, the results showed that the relative dynamic elastic modulus targeting repeated freezing-thawing resistance satisfied the 80% target. The freeze-thaw resistance improved as the ACS aggregate content increased. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the durability of rural-road pavement concrete can be improved experimentally by applying both GG and GS at the same time. Therefore, it is shown that ACS aggregates can be applied to rural-road pavement concrete as a substitute for natural aggregates.

The purpose of this study was to assess the physical and mechanical properties of pavement concrete for rural roads of South Korea made with air-cooled slag aggregate, which is an industrial byproduct. This study assessed the physical and chemical properties according to the following performance requirements based on the design criteria of the Korea Ministry of Agriculture’s Agricultural Production Infrastructure Maintenance Business Plan and the Korea Expressway Corporation’s Highway Construction Specialized Specifications: slump of 80 mm or greater, air content of 4.5 ± 1.5%, compressive strength of at least 21 MPa, splitting tensile strength of at least 4.2 MPa, and a chloride penetration resistance of less than 4000 C. The slump, air content, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and chloride ion permeability of the aggregate-containing concretes were measured. The air-cooled slag aggregates provided the necessary physical and chemical properties and presented no environmental issues. Furthermore, the slump and air content of concrete made with the aggregates met the target values. The slump decreased and the air content increased with increasing amounts of air-cooled slag aggregate. Mechanical testing of the concretes containing air-cooled slag aggregate established that they met the performance requirements for rural road pavement.

The benefits of using reinforcing fibers in latex-modified rapid-set cement preplaced concrete for emergency pavement repairs were examined in terms of strength, permeability, and durability as functions of the type of fiber. Single-type fibers, including jute, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and nylon fibers, as well as hybrid fiber mixtures prepared with two of the aforementioned fibers at a 1:1 weight ratio, were evaluated. Fibers were incorporated into the concrete mixture at 1.2 kg/m3. A vibratory press compactor that simulates roller compaction was used to increase compaction and densification of the resulting pavement repair material. The hybrid fiber-reinforced latex-modified rapid-set cement preplaced concrete (HFLMC) was manufactured to satisfy the criteria for opening traffic, i.e., compressive strength of 21 MPa or higher, and flexural strength of 3.5 MPa or higher after 4 h. Pavement requiring repair was removed and replaced with coarse aggregate. The rapid-set binder, fibers, and latex were then mixed and placed onto the coarse aggregate layer. The repair was considered complete after compaction. The resulting HFLMC satisfied all of the test criteria. Furthermore, concretes made with hybrid fibers were more mechanically sound than those made with a single fiber variety. Hybrid fiber concretes made with PVA and nylon fibers exhibited the best properties for emergency pavement repair. These results indicate that HFLMC is suitable for emergency pavement repair.

We developed a single-shot coherent X-ray imaging instrument at the hard X-ray beamline of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL). This experimental platform was established to conduct a variety of XFEL experiments, including coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), and coherent X-ray scattering (CXS). Based on the forward-scattering geometry, this instrument utilizes a fixed-target method for sample delivery. It is well optimized for single-shot-based experiments in which one expects to observe the ultrafast phenomena of nanoparticles at picosecond temporal and nanometer spatial resolutions. In this paper, we introduce a single-shot coherent X-ray imaging instrument and report pump–probe coherent diffraction imaging (PPCDI) of Ag nanoparticles as an example of its applications.

Due to the increasing use of polypropylene-based nonwoven dust masks and air filters, environmental problems that occur due to the plastic pollution resulting from the disposal of these materials have also increased. Hence, an eco-friendly air filter based on PVA nanofibers (NFs) was fabricated by electrospinning on a nonwoven fabric, and its performance was evaluated as a filter capable of blocking or capturing particulate matter. The quality factor of the optimized PVA NF-based air filter was found to be 0.010606 Pa−1, which is lower than that of a HEPA filter (0.015394 Pa−1), but higher than that of a cabin air filter (0.010517 Pa−1) and a dust mask (0.009102 Pa−1). The contamination level of the PVA NF-based filter was analyzed by optical and structural analyses of the filter surface. Finally, the filter was soaked in water to selectively remove the contaminated PVA NF layer, and the remaining nonwoven fabric was able to be reused to make the filter.

Mixed metal oxide (MMO) is one of the widely utilized ceramic materials in various industries. In order to obtain high performance, the specific surface area of MMO should be controlled. Calcination of layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a versatile way to prepare MMO with homogeneous metal distribution and well-developed porosity. Although researchers found that the specific surface area of LDH-originated MMO was relatively high, it had not been systematically investigated how the surface area is controlled under a certain parameter. In this review, we summarized LDH-originated MMO with various starting composition, calcination temperature, and pore developing agent in terms of specific surface area and porosity. Briefly, it was represented that MMOs with Mg-Al components generally had higher specific surface area than Mg-Fe or Zn-Al components. Calcination temperature in the range 300–600 °C resulted in the high specific surface area, while upper or lower temperature reduced the values. Pore developing agent did not result in dramatic increase in MMO; however, the pore size distribution became narrower in the presence of pore developing agents.

Silver nanoparticle (AgNP), in terms of antibacterial, catalytic, electronic, and optical applications, is an attractive material. Especially, when prepared to furnish sharp edge and systematic particle orientation on the substrate, AgNPs can take advantage of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this research, we suggested a synthetic method to immobilize the AgNP on metal oxide by utilizing Ag-thiolate and layered double hydroxide (LDH) as precursor and template, respectively. The layer-by-layer structure of LDH and Ag-thiolate transformed through reductive calcination to metal oxide and AgNP array. Physicochemical characterization, including powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, microscopies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealed that the AgNP with sufficient crystallinity and particle gap was obtained at relatively high calcination temperature, ~600 °C. UV-vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy showed that the calcination temperature affected particle size and electronic structure of AgNP. The prepared materials were subjected to SERS tests toward 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP). The sample obtained at 600 °C exhibited 50 times higher substrate enhancement factor (SEF) than the one obtained at 400 °C, suggesting that the calcination temperature was a determining parameter to enhance SERS activity in current synthetic condition.

Streptococcus parauberis is utilized as an oral vaccine by first inactivating the cells with formalin to produce formalin- killed cells (FKC) and then encapsulating them with polymer beads consisting of a cross-linked alginate-Ca2+ network. The encapsulation efficiency and media-dependent release are controlled by pre-treating the FKC with two types of clay nanoparticles: kaolinite (KA) and layered double hydroxide (LDH). The addition of LDH induced large agglomerates of FKC, and the KA enhanced the dispersion of FKC. The differences in the dispersibility of the FKC upon the use of clay nanoparticles was determined to strongly affect the encapsulation efficiency and release properties. The FKC + LDH mixture exhibited a slightly reduced encapsulation efficiency compared to the FKC alone. However, FKC + KA exhibited a dramatically improved encapsulation efficiency. In terms of the media-dependent release, the alginate beads were found to be fairly stable under gastric conditions and in deionized water with or without clay nanoparticles, preserving most of the encapsulated FKC. The intestine was the final target organ for FKC vaccination, and release at the site varied according to the use of clay nanoparticles. Both clays seemed to enhance the release of FKC, the cumulative amount being 3.6 times and 1.3 times larger for LDH and KA, respectively, than was shown with only FKC encapsulated beads.
