Background: Green synthesis method of nanoparticles has been developed for several years. Besides providing environmental-friendly process, green synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extract provides synergistic effect of the secondary metabolite in such antibiotic activity. The study with an intensification process in nanoparticles formation is also gaining great attention. This research deals with the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Datura metel flower extract for the antibacterial agent. The use of ultrasound-assisted method for the synthesis was investigated. Methods: Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Datura metel flower extract under ultrasound- assisted method has been conducted. Evaluation of the successful synthesis was done using UV-visible spectrophotometry, particle size analyzer, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The prepared AgNPs were tested as an antibacterial against S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, and E. coli. Results: The ultrasound-assisted synthesis of AgNPs produces particles ranging from 25-70 nm in size; meanwhile, the reflux method demonstrated the size of 50-170 nm. These particles size represents the effect on the antibacterial activity as the ultrasound-assisted synthesized Ag NPs have higher inhibition zone towards all tested bacteria. Subsequently, these data presented the applicability of Ag NPs synthesis using an ultrasound method as a potential candidate for biomedical applications. Conclusion: The profile of UV-Visible spectra and particle size analyses demonstrated the applicability of the ultrasound technique to produce a smaller size of the nanoparticles with higher antibacterial activity.

This article gives a description of airborne and balloon-borne instrumentation for the measurement of microphysical properties and the chemical composition of aerosol and cloud particles. Different techniques are described. In particular, the instrumentation is subdivided into two broad categories: remote sensing instrumentation and in situ instrumentation. In the first category are instrumentation like cloud RADARs (radio detection and ranging), LIDARs (light detection and ranging), backscatter sondes, limb, and occultation aerosol detection devices. They can determine the microphysical properties of the aerosols and, only with complex a priori assumptions, their chemical composition. Among the in situ instrumentation, for example, optical particle counters (OPC), condensation particle counters (CPC) determine the microphysical properties of aerosols, whereas their chemical composition is determined by means of mass spectrometers, and the counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) technique associated with tunable diode laser and Lyman-α spectrometers. Recycling CO2 into light olefins is a promising approach to reduce CO2 emissions. To promote this technology, an efficient catalyst with high activity and selectivity towards light olefins is imperative. In this work, a series of Fe–Co–K supported on micro-mesoporous carbon (MMC) and microporous carbon (MC) with different metal loading contents (20–80 wt%) were prepared for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Impregnating mixed metal oxides on both MMC and MC reduced particle sizes and enhanced their dispersion and reducibility, yielding a higher CO2 conversion compared to the unsupported Fe–Co–K catalyst. The metal oxides were highly dispersed inside the micropores of MC support, achieving the highest CO2 conversion. However, the high dispersion of metal oxides inside micropores led to the formation of isolated particles with a low interfacial contact with each other, resulting in a low light olefins selectivity. The MMC support provided a lower degree of metal dispersion, creating more interfacial contact area, promoting the selectivity towards olefins. Overall, the 60 wt% Fe–Co–K supported on MMC catalyst exhibited the highest light olefins yield of 10.8% at 400 °C and 20 bar and excellent stability.

Lead (Pb) is one of the most paradoxical elements, both having diverse practical uses, as well as being extremely toxic to humans, and especially to children. The use of Pb records a steady growth with annual production currently exceeding 10 million metric tons. In spite of the environmental awareness of modern society, humans are still exposed to Pb through its emission by smelting and mining activities, and also by Pb-bearing mine wastes and soils. Here, we review the chemical and mineralogical forms of Pb generated from smelting and mining processes and subsequently altered in tailings, slag piles, and soils. In smelter plumes, Pb is emitted to the atmosphere either in the form of smaller nano-size particulate matter (PM) often associated with S, or larger micrometer Pb-bearing PM matter accompanied by oxide-silicate matrices. Pb-bearing phases in mine tailings and impacted soils depict a greater mineralogical and chemical complexity than those emitted from smelters and the larger particle size of this PM also leads to a lower Pb bioavailability. High resolution observations in aquatic system, soils and rock coatings impacted by smelting and mining activities show the presence of Pb-bearing phosphates, sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, and oxide nanoparticles. Larger micrometer size particles of Pb-bearing minerals form often through the aggregation of Pb-bearing nanoparticles, a process commonly referred to as crystallization through particle attachment. Mobilization of Pb within soil columns is strongly affected by the transport of colloids, especially those composed of organic matter and Fe-hydroxides because Pb is taken up efficiently by these two soil components. The extraordinary variability and complexities of all of these processes suggest that future reduction of Pb contamination in the environment and its impact on human health mainly depends on eliminating or greatly reducing Pb-release from smelting operations and tailings impoundments.

Aluminium-wood particle composites were formed by casting method. Different weight fractions of wood particle as reinforcement to the Aluminium alloys were used to produce the composites. The physical and mechanical properties such as density, impact strength, tensile strength, hardness and microstructure were investigated. The results showed that the density decreases with the percentage increase in reinforcement. Also, a significant enhancement in the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the composite compared to that of pure aluminium was achieved. The maximum UTS of the Aluminium -wood composite is 97.69 MPa and occurred at 20%wt wood particulate addition reinforcement while that of the unreinforced Aluminium is 40.189 MPa. The impact energy varies from 47.00 J to 89.00 J with a maximum value at 10%wt wood particulate addition while the hardness varies from 52.33BHN to 62BHN with a maximum value at 10%wt. All the mechanical behaviours investigated in the study generally showed that the Aluminium -wood composite exhibited better mechanical properties than the pure Aluminium. The microstructure examination revealed that the wood particles were uniformly distributed in the metal matrix composite.

Strontium aluminate nanophosphor doped with Praseodymium was synthesized by sol–gel method. The above synthesized SrAl4O7:Pr material was characterized by SEM, PXRD, EDAX, TG and PL. By Xray diffraction analysis monoclinic structure was confirmed. Particle size was calculated by using Scherrer formula. Obtained nano particles are round interlinked shaped and leads to the formation of bigger particle. Under excitation for 360 nm, Photolumiscence emission obtained were at 395 nm, 520 nm 790 nm for UV and Green and IR regions respectively. The TG curve illustrates the three key weight loss measures for Pr doped SrAl4O7.

Ferrite Cobalt (CoFe2O4) is a recognized attractive material with normal implementation and normal size of polarization. It has unmistakable substance security and motorized hardness. It is an eager promoter for the strategy of tactile gadgets and actuators, as an authoritative fixing, attractive medication gadgets electrical and having a broad scope of researching in materialistic innovation or science for mechanical uses and applications. These nanoparticles cobalt and ferrite on an ensnared viably handled on surrounding temperature by a basic process of co-precipitation. This precious stone structures and architecture of image was controlled through X-ray diffraction and SEM. The range of XRD affirms that composite nano-particles were shaped by ideal structure of spinel. According to the actions of both SPM and attendance of a dead layer (surface amorphous shell layer), which systemically decreases as the synthesis temperature increases, the optimum curve-appropriate of M-H statistics is due to the reduced particle/particle interaction.

The analysis of microplastics (MP) becomes more difficult for smaller sizes, especially in complex matrices such as sediment of natural waters. In this work, we analyzed MPs in sediment using laser direct infrared (LDIR) imaging, a relatively new technique in environmental MP studies. Sediment samples were spiked with analytical surrogates (polyethylene spheres), and subjected to density separation, wet peroxide oxidation, calcite removal, and filtration. The extracted particles were coated on to a low-emissivity glass slide which was first examined on a stereomicroscope. Six slides (two sediment samples and four different blanks) were further analyzed using an Agilent LDIR system. Approximately 520 and 430 MP/g were found in the two samples, with diameter ranging 20–3384 μm and 84% being smaller than 100 μm. The increase in particle count with decreasing particle sizes followed a power law curve, suggesting that a large portion of the smaller MPs was generated by the breakdown of larger plastic pieces. Major polymers found in this work included polyamide, polyester, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polyacetal. Most MPs were fragments, while beads and fiber were also found. In the two sediment samples, 14% and 46% of the total particles, respectively, were composed of non-plastic micro-sized particles, including natural polyamide, cellulose, chitin, rubber, and “unknown”. Challenges, potential biases, and uncertainties are discussed. This work is the first application of LDIR imaging on MPs in natural sediment.

This work is aimed to study the effects of component size and solubility on the surface composition of spray dried (SD) uniform two-component particles fabricated by micro-fluidic spray dryer. Various precursor liquid consisting of small molecular of methionine (Met, 33 g/L) or lysine (Lys, 739 g/L) and large-sized silica (12 nm) were prepared by adjusting the mass ratio of components. X-ray energy dispersive results showed that the respective enrichment degree (De) of Met and Lys on the surface of SD-M1S9 and -L1S9 prepared at 150 °C were 182 ± 9% and 125 ± 14%. The De of hydrophobic Met for SD-M1S1 and -M9S1 were 46 ± 9% and 4 ± 2%, respectively, whereas relative hydrophilic Lys mainly distributed internal of the particle meanwhile the De of silica on the surface for SD-L1S1 and -L9S1 were 17 ± 4% and 12 ± 1%, respectively. Drying temperature (120 and 180 °C) showed more apparent effect on the De of amino acid for the particles of less amino acid. The possible formation mechanism of surface composition and the surface composition impact on the wettability of particles were explored. These results provide new guidance for manufacturing functional SD powders with various components.

Gadolinium (III)-based T1 contrast agent have been widely used in clinical MRI. In this study, salicylic acid-gadolinium chelate was prepared via directly coordination reaction of gadolinium ion and salicylic acid. Then, three polyethylene glycols with different molecular weight were modified on the surface of salicylic acid-gadolinium by simple chemical coupling to construct three core-shell structural Gd based composites. The SEM and TEM characterization results show that the composite is a spherical particle with a diameter of about 100–200 nm. The longitudinal relaxation rate r1 of the Gal-PEG-2000 is 11.097 (mmol/L)–1/s, and the ratio of r2/r1 is as low as 2.53. The composite shows good liver and intestines MRI performances after being used in in vivo imaging, showing a good prospect of biological application.

Filter-based offline analysis of atmospheric aerosol hygroscopicity coupled to composition analysis provides information complementary to that obtained from online analysis. However, its application itself and comparison to online analysis have remained limited to date. In this study, daily submicrometer aerosol particles (PM0.95, 50 % cutoff diameter: 0.95 μm) were collected onto quartz fiber filters in Okinawa Island, a receptor of East Asian outflow, in the autumn of 2015. The chemical composition of water-soluble matter (WSM) in PM0.95 and PM0.95 itself, and their respective hygroscopicities were characterized through the offline use of an aerosol mass spectrometer and a hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer. Thereafter, results were compared with those obtained from online analyses. Sulfate dominated the WSM mass (60 %), followed by water-soluble organic matter (WSOM, 20 %) and ammonium (13 %). WSOM accounted for most (93 %) of the mass of extracted organic matter (EOM) and the atomic O to C ratios (O : C) of WSOM and EOM were high (mean ± standard deviation were, respectively, 0.84 ± 0.08 and 0.79 ± 0.08), both of which indicate highly aged characteristics of the observed aerosol. The hygroscopic growth curves showed clear hysteresis for most samples. At 85 % RH, the calculated hygroscopicity parameter κ of the WSM (κWSM), WSOM, EOM, and PM0.95 (κPM0.95) were, respectively, 0.50 ± 0.03, 0.22 ± 0.12, 0.20 ± 0.11, and 0.47 ± 0.03. An analysis using the thermodynamic E-AIM model shows, on average, that inorganic salts and WSOM respectively contributed 88 % and 12 % of the κWSM (or κPM0.95). High similarities were found between offline and online analysis for chemical compositions that are related to particle hygroscopicity (the mass fractions and O : C of organics, and the degree of neutralization), and also for aerosol hygroscopicity. As possible factors governing the variation of κWSM, the influences of WSOM abundance and the neutralization of inorganic salts were assessed. At high RH (70–90 %), the hygroscopicity of WSM and PM0.95 was affected considerably by the presence of organic components; at low RH (20–50 %), the degree of neutralization could be important. This study not only characterized aerosol hygroscopicity at the receptor site of East Asian outflow, but also shows that the offline hygroscopicity analysis is an appropriate method, at least for aerosols of the studied type. The results encourage further applications to other environments and to more in-depth hygroscopicity analysis, in particular for organic fractions.

In order to mimic hierarchical nanostructures in nature, particles of polymer blends consisting of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PBTPA-block-PMMA were fabricated by a solvent evaporation method. Effects of the molecular weight and the chemical composition of PBTPA-b-PMMA, molecular weights of homopolymers, and the composition of the blend on the morphology were investigated. The polymer blend particle consisting of PBTPA and PMMA homopolymers exhibited thermodynamically favored core-shell structure, in which more hydrophilic PMMA-shell surrounded PBTPA-core. The addition of 10 wt% of PBTPA-b-PMMA caused the morphological transition from core-shell to Janus or inversed core-shell, in which PBTPA-shell surrounded PMMA-core, depending on the molecular weight of PBTPA segment in PBTPA-b-PMMA. When the molecular weight of PMMA segment was higher than that of PMMA homopolymer, watermelon-like particles in which small PBTPA domain less than 80 nm dispersed in the PMMA domain surrounded by PBTPA shell were observed. As the ratio of PBTPA-b-PMMA increased, the interface of the macrophase separation became obscure. At 50 wt% of the PBTPA-b-PMMA, only microphase separation was observed. The measurement of interfacial tension by pendant drop method demonstrated that PBTPA-b-PMMA lower the interfacial tension between PBTPA and the aqueous phase to the value similar to that of PMMA with the aqueous phase.

In this study, functionally graded foam made of Inconel 625 superalloy was successfully produced using the template replication method, with open-cell polyurethane foams as a precursor. The products have a similar pore morphology as the templates and adjacent layers were successfully sintered together by particle bonding. Sound absorption experiments on graded metallic foams reveal that the sound absorption at particular frequency ranges can be improved by various permutations of foam layers. For graded foam of two distinct pore sizes, a mathematical equation was proposed to predict the location of the intersection point of the sound absorption curves, thereby aiding in graded foam design. An increase in sound absorption coefficients by resonance-like effects can be introduced before the intersection points by placing the foam layer of smaller pore size nearer to the sound source. The sound absorption performances can be further customized when the thickness proportion of the pore sizes is changed and when the number of distinct pore sizes used is increased. The sound absorption performance at lower frequencies is generally boosted by resonance-like effects when the layer of foam with the largest pore size is placed furthest from the sound source. Given the same composition of foam with a fixed thickness proportion of pore sizes, one can introduce resonance-like effects to improve the sound absorption performance compared to other permutations while possibly satisfying weight requirements in practical applications. This study provides valuable insights and mathematical guidelines in the design and manufacturing of functionally graded metallic foam for specific applications.

The phenomenon of adsorption of solid particles at fluid interfaces to stabilize emulsions or foams have been known for more than a century. Today, particle-stabilized emulsions, often referred to as Pickering emulsions, are receiving growing attention as they are encountered in oil recovery and have long been used in personal care products and food industry. In the past 10 years the focus of the Pickering emulsion has also increasingly shifted to biomedical applications with thanks to novel syntheses of a wide range of biocompatible particle stabilizers. Here, a brief overview of the development of biocompatible particles is given for Pickering emulsion stabilization, including alginate, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and protein-based particles. The materials capable of being prepared by templating from emulsion stabilized with biocompatible particles include colloidal capsules and hierarchically porous materials. It is hoped that the understanding gained from the recent intense activity in the field will enable more researchers to modify existing materials and design new formulations, which would be beneficial for exploring more biological applications.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as a deathful gas produced by burning of hydrocarbons in a lack of enough oxygen, in which breathing CO leads to serious issues on human life health quality. Therefore, adsorption of CO gas is an essential task for diagnosis or removal of this dreadful gas in environment. To do this, a HEME-like model of iron-nitrogen-doped beryllium oxide (FeNBeO) monolayer was investigated for adsorbing CO gas by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two models were obtained for this process, in which relaxation of CO with C-head or O-head towards Fe region of monolayer. The results indicated that the formation of FeNBeO-CO model could be achieved more favorable than the formation of FeNBeO-OC model. The obtained optimized geometers and energies all approved this achievement for favorability of FeNBeO-CO model formation. Moreover, molecular orbital based electronic features indicated variations of such features for the models upon adsorption of CO substance, in which the models could be detectable in a sensor function for the existence of CO gas in the environment. As a consequence, the investigated FeNBeO monolayer could be proposed useful for adsorption of CO gas at least for the CO deathful gas diagnosis purposes.

Fly ash (FA) is a complex and abundant solid waste created by humans, and has caused environmental issues, for which flotation is an effective technique employed before its comprehensive utilization. However, the complex and hydrophilic characteristics of FA particles cannot naturally fulfill the selective separation by common flotation. Therefore, this study aims to provide an insight into fluid intensification effects on flotation to achieve the enhancement of FA surface property and decarburization. The relevant effects and mechanisms are investigated, based on the measurements of zeta potential, infrared spectroscopy, contact/wrap angle, induction time, size distribution and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectrometry. Experimental results manifested that the maximum unburned carbon recovery (73.25%) and flotation rate (0.2037 s–1) were achieved with preconditioning energy inputs of 14.23 and 6.57 W·kg–1 respectively. With increasing preconditioning energy inputs, fluid intensification effects could promote the inter-particle collision/attrition, detachment of hydrophilic existence and collector adsorption on particles. Correspondingly, absorbance of some hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups was strengthened and weakened respectively, which accounted for the improved interfacial properties, reflected as the increased contact and wrap angles, together with declined induction time. Overall, this article revealed the positive influences of fluid intensification based preconditioning process on rendering particle surface hydrophobic and improving separation performance.

Bismuth has drawn widespread attention as a prospective alloying-type anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its large volumetric capacity. However, such material encounters drastic particle pulverization and overgrowth of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) upon repeated (de)alloying, thus causing poor rate and cycling degradation. Herein, we report a unique structure design with bismuth nanorods confined in hollow N, S-codoped carbon nanotubes (Bi@NS-C) fabricated by a solvothermal method and in-situ thermal reduction. Ex-situ SEM observations confirm that such a design can significantly suppress the size fining of Bi nanorods, thus inhibiting the particle pulverization and repeated SEI growth upon charging/discharging. The as achieved Bi@NS-C demonstrates outstanding rate capability for SIBs (96.5% capacity retention at 30 A g−1 vs. 1 A g−1), and a record high rate performance for PIBs (399.5 mAh g−1 @ 20 A g−1). Notably, the as constructed full cell (Na3V2(PO4)3@C|Bi@NS-C) demonstrates impressive performance with a high energy density of 219.8 W h kg−1 and a high-power density of 6443.3 W kg−1 (based on the total mass of active materials on both electrodes), outperforming the state-of-the-art literature.

Plug, a type of male mould in thermoforming, is mostly produced by conventional processes such as machining. However, in this study, plugs that are used in thermoforming were produced using Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). Plugs were produced using Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Aluminium (Al) particle reinforced PLA filaments by a 3d printer. Plugs that are produced by FDM, were polished using 800, 1000, 1200, 1600 and 2000 grit sandpapers to reduce friction. Also, thermal effects such as temperature distribution on the region where the plug touches the plastic sheet, were investigated. It has been found that FDM can be a significant alternative for male mould production in thermoforming. Additionally, PLA filaments have great potential for tool production in thermoforming.

The super-structured nanodimensional apatitic particles have been limited explored for therapeutic applications. Furthermore, ion substituted super-structured nanodimensional apatitic particles have been rarely attempted, which motivated the present investigation. In the present work, F − and Cl − substituted hydroxyapatite (HAP) prepared via a facile and economical one-pot hydrothermal route were characterized for their structural, morphological and bioactive properties. The F − and Cl − anions (1 wt%) were individually substituted in hierarchically assembled nanostructured apatitic (HANA) particles and produced fluorine substituted Hydroxyapatite (FHAP) and chlorine substituted Hydroxyapatite (ClHAP) HANA particles, respectively. Besides comprehensive characterization, particles were systematically tested for their in-vitro ionic dissolution and drug-carrying abilities. Both FHAP and ClHAP nanoparticles exhibited monolithic apatitic structure, novel spherical morphology having substituted elements, mesoporous large surface area, and pore-volume with high thermal stability. Furthermore, both particles exhibited superior in-vitro bioactivity ability. Besides it, both FHAP and ClHAP nanoparticles exhibited superior drug loading and sustained drug release characteristics. Thus, this study presented the potentials of novel particle shapes with superior bioactivity and drug-carrying abilities, making them suitable for multipurpose therapeutic applications, including tissue regeneration and drug-carrying agents.

To tackle the dissolution problem of boron carbide particles in silicon infiltration process, carbon-coated boron carbide particles were fabricated for the preparation of the reaction-bonded boron carbide composites. The carbon coating can effectively protect the boron carbide from reacting with liquid Si and their dissolution, thus maintaining the irregular shape of boron carbide particles and preventing the growth of boron carbide particles and reaction formed SiC regions. Furthermore, the nano-SiC particles, originated from the reaction of the carbon coating and the infiltrated Si, uniformly coated on the surfaces of boron carbide particles, thus forming a ceramic skeleton of the nano-SiC particles-coated and -bonded boron carbide particles. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites can be increased by 26 %, 45 %, and 37 % respectively, by using carbon-coated boron carbide particles as raw materials.

Hypothesis Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a common colloidal dispersion that can aggregate in the aqueous phase to form nanoparticles with hydrophobic polyurethane chains as the core and hydrophilic ionic groups as the shell. Considering their structure and pH-responsive functional groups, WPU nanoparticles could be ideal particulate emulsifiers for preparing pH-responsive Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). Experiments A series of anionic WPU with different content of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (DMPA) side chains were synthesized via a polyaddition reaction. The DMPA content, size, ζ-potential, and interfacial behaviors of WPU were then investigated. Furthermore, the effects of particle concentration, internal phase fraction (ϕ), oil type, and pH values on the Pickering HIPEs’ morphology, stability, and rheological behaviors were systematically studied. Finally, we demonstrated the emulsification–demulsification process of WPU-stabilized Pickering HIPEs and discussed its mechanism. Findings Oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering HIPEs with tailored morphology and excellent pH-responsiveness were prepared from anionic WPU nanoparticles. The WPU concentration, ϕ, and oil type had a large impact on the formation and mean droplet size of the WPU-stabilized emulsions. Rheology analysis demonstrated that the strictly limited movement of droplets endowed the WPU-stabilized HIPEs with high stability, shear sensitivity, and excellent thixotropic recovery. By simply changing the aqueous-phase pH value, the WPU-stabilized HIPEs could undergo more than ten emulsification-demulsification cycles, as the physical and interfacial properties of WPU nanoparticles were pH-dependent. The excellent performance of the WPU-stabilized pH-responsive Pickering HIPEs exhibited their potential practical applications, such as for oil transportation and recovery, emulsion polymerization, and heterogeneous catalysis.

Atmospheric nanoparticles (PM0.1 µm) are a major cause of environmental problems and also affect health risk. To control and reduce these problems, sources identification of atmospheric particulates is necessary. This work presents the effects of several factors on the mechanical strength of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) based on alpha tricalcium phosphate and correlates the results with the microstructure and percentage of conversion to hydroxyapatite. Conversion rate increased by raising the setting temperature in the studied range (4–90 °C), but the strength exhibited an increasing-decreasing trend due to changes in the morphology of hydrated crystals. Plate-like crystals were formed in the range of 22–60 °C, mechanically reinforcing the material, whereas the formation and refinement of needle-like crystals at higher setting temperature decreased the strength. Moreover, cements with dissimilar particle sizes had different optimal hydrolysis temperatures that resulted in the maximum strength. The finest powder led to higher strength at lower setting temperature due to the formation of a more compact crystal network and higher conversion. Therefore, optimization of powder particle size may allow to achieve the highest possible strength at room temperature, being beneficial for the production of the strong pre-set CPC-based implants without the use of energy. Furthermore, the particle size can be also engineered to produce formulations that develop the highest strength at physiological temperature, with application as injectable bone grafts. The incorporation and crosslinking of gelatine further increased the mechanical strength of pre-set cements by bridging the hydroxyapatite crystals, the setting temperature showing a similar effect to that of gelatine-free cements. In contrast, moisture decreased the strength and reduced the brittleness by the solvating intramolecular association between hydroxyapatite crystals and between gelatine molecules. Moreover, large cement bodies were slightly weaker than small ones, but the size effect was not statistically significant.

As the demand for lithium-ion batteries increases, a better understanding of the complex phenomena involved in their operation becomes crucial. In this work, we propose a coupled thermo-chemo-mechanical model for electrode particles of Li-ion batteries. To this end, we start with a general finite strain continuum framework for the coupled thermo-chemo-mechanical problem and then narrow it down to cathode active particles of Li-ion batteries, particularly to lithium manganese oxide particles. Electrochemical kinetics at the surface of the particle and also heat generation due to current exchange are taken into account. Next, the numerical treatment of the problem using the finite element method is presented. Specific line elements are needed to evaluate the flux of ions at the surface of the particle. Given the recent EURO 6 regulations, which include limits on particle number density (and hence size) for soot emissions from land vehicles, soot models must be capable of accurately predicting soot particle sizes. Previous modeling work has demonstrated the importance of the relative strengths of nucleation and condensation in predicting soot primary particle size. Due to this importance, a fundamental reversible model for nucleation and condensation, called the reversible PAH clustering (RPC) model, was developed in previous work through the use of statistical mechanics and the results from several recent works. In the present work, the RPC model is enhanced to include multiple nucleation (or dimerization) events from 6 different PAH size groups, resulting in 21 unique dimer pairs. In addition, a soot PAH tracking model is developed to track the amount of each PAH size group within soot particles. The addition of this model resulted in reduced computation times and the ability to investigate PAH-PAH reactions within soot particles. The results of the enhanced RPC model demonstrate that smaller PAHs are most important for the nucleation process, while small and large PAHs are important for the condensation process. These results are shown to be due to the relatively lower reversibility of condensation versus the nucleation process. These findings are discussed in light of recent experimental results in the literature and are shown to be well supported. Acknowledgements: This work has been supported by EPSRC, via an industrial CASE award (for YC) with AWE (EP/R511870/1). © British Crown Copyright 2020/AWE., Tensile stress–strain testing and creep testing have been carried out on a polyurethane rubber, at three temperatures, with and without either particulate or short fibre alumina reinforcement. A previous paper reported concerning composites with particulate reinforcement and the present work is focused on the effect of the fibres. The samples were made via a blending and extrusion process that produced a certain degree of fibre alignment (along the direction of loading). Prior milling procedures were used to produce fibres with two different ranges of aspect ratio (with averages about 10 and 16). When expressed as true stress–strain relationships, all materials exhibit approximately linear responses. The dependence of stiffness on the volume fraction and aspect ratio of the reinforcement was found to conform well to the Eshelby model predictions. Moreover, the creep behaviour of all of the materials can be captured well by a Miller–Norton formulation, using the average matrix stress predicted by the Eshelby model. A striking conclusion is that it is both predicted and observed that short fibres are much more effective in reducing the creep rate than is the case with particles.

Atmospheric organic acids (OAs) are expected to enhance methanesulfonic acid (MSA)-driven new particle formation (NPF). However, the exact role of OAs in MSA-driven NPF remains unclear. Here, we employed a two-step strategy to probe the role of OAs in MSA–methylamine (MA) NPF. Initially, we evaluated the enhancing potential of 12 commonly detected OAs in ternary MA–MSA–OA cluster formation by considering the formation free energies of the (MSA)1(MA)1(OA)1 clusters and the atmospheric concentrations of the OAs. It was found that formic acid (ForA) has the highest potential to stabilize the MA–MSA clusters. The high enhancing potential of ForA results from its acidity, structural factors such as no intramolecular H bonds, and high atmospheric abundance. The second step is to extend the MSA–MA–ForA system to larger cluster sizes. The results indicate that ForA can indeed enhance MSA–MA NPF at atmospheric conditions (the upper limited temperature is 258.15 K), indicating that ForA might have an important role in MSA-driven NPF. The enhancing effect of ForA is mainly caused by an increased formation of the (MSA)2(MA)1 cluster, which is involved in the pathway of binary MSA–MA nucleation. Hence, our results indicate that OAs might be required to facilitate MSA-driven NPF in the atmosphere.

CdO nanoparticles (CdO NPs) were synthesized utilizing urea-assisted auto-combustion (AC) and microwave combustion (MC) methods. The structural, thermal, optical, morphological, and compositional analysis of the prepared samples were investigated after they were heat treated at 350 °C. The impact of heat treatment and the method of synthesis on their physicochemical properties were investigated. XRD was used to determine the phase, crystallite size, and lattice constant of CdO NPs. The modification of the phase and crystallite size of CdO NPs indicates the impact of the heat treatment and synthesis process. The annealing process raises the crystallite size from 28 nm to 45 nm for the auto combustion approach and from 24 nm to 40 nm for the microwave combustion method. Under heat treatment, the energy band gaps of CdO NPs from auto combustion method and microwave combustion method samples were determined to be 2.09 eV and 1.65 eV, respectively. The surface morphology of CdO NPs was documented by SEM, indicating that the particle's morphology was modified by the synthesis procedure. The nanoscale range of the particles is confirmed by TEM micrographs of annealed CdO NPs, which is closely matched with the crystallite size derived from XRD. TG-DTA was used to examine the thermal characteristics of annealed CdO NPs.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) are promising drug vectors due to their high drug loading capacities, degradability under biologically relevant conditions. The dissolution of MSN has been the focus of several recent studies, most of which have, however, been carried out in the absence of proteins, and do therefore not reflect the conditions prevailing during in vitro or in vivo administration of the particles. Furthermore, typically the dissolution studies are limited with respect to the range of MSN concentrations applied. Here, we report results related to the dissolution kinetics and structural particle evolution for MCM-48 MSN carried out in the presence of proteins, and where the particle concentration has been used as a parameter to cover typical concentrations used in in vitro and in vivo studies involving MSNs. Proteins adsorbing to the MSN surface form a diffusion limiting layer that leads to the intermediate formation of core-shell structured particles upon dissolution. Here, the protein concentration controls the kinetics of this process, as the amount of protein adsorbing to the MSN increase with increasing protein concentration. The results thus also imply that the MSN dissolution kinetics is faster under normally applied in vitro conditions as compared to what can be expected under full serum conditions.

Coating of particulate materials in fluidized beds is a widely used technique to eliminate particle agglomeration, provide slow release of an active substance, or protect active ingredients. When thin polymer shells are applied on a particle surface, it is important to determine the process parameters that provide coating uniformity. In this study, the degree of coverage, defined as the fraction of the coated surface of the particles, is proposed as a quantitative criterion of coating uniformity. A new model for the batch fluidized-bed coating process is presented. The model allows prediction of the function of particle distribution according to the degree of coverage at a given process time and thereby enables assessment of coating uniformity. An algorithm for the numerical solution of model equations for a batch fluidized-bed coater is described. The influences of the main process parameters on the coating uniformity were shown.

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) based therapies may provide a valuable new treatment modality for acute and chronic lung diseases, including asthma, respiratory infections, and lung cancer. Currently mAbs are delivered via systemic administration routes, but direct delivery to the lungs via the inhaled route could provide higher concentrations at the site of disease and reduced off-target effects. Though lyophilized mAbs may be reconstituted and delivered to the lungs using nebulizers, dry powder inhalers provide a more patient-friendly delivery method based upon their fast administration time and portability. However, particle engineering processes required to prepare respirable dried powders for DPI delivery involve multiple potential stressors for mAbs, which have not been fully explored. In this study, a systematic examination of various aspects of the particle engineering process (atomization, freezing, drying, and storage) was performed to further understand their impact on mAb structure and aggregation. Using anti-streptavidin IgG1 as a model mAb, atomization settings were optimized using a design of experiments approach to elucidate the relationship between feed flow rate, formulation solid content, and atomization airflow rate and protein structural changes and aggregation. The optimized atomization conditions were then applied to spray drying and spray freezing drying particle engineering processes to determine the effects of freezing and drying on IgG1 stability and aerosol performance of the powders. IgG1 was found to be particularly susceptible to degradation induced by the expansive air-ice interface generated by spray freeze drying and this process also produced powders that exhibited decreased storage stability. This study further delineates the design space for manufacturing of respirable biologic therapies and is intended to serve as a roadmap for future development work.

Ring-like residual deposits are often observed after drying suspension droplets on surfaces. That introduces a crucial defect in practical applications, such as ink-jet printing that requires a uniform deposit. In this study, depositions after drying sessile/pendant droplets with silica/polystyrene particles were examined to identify the effect of gravitational sedimentation of particles on self-pinning and deposition pattern. The suspension droplet with larger polystyrene (or silica) particles would trigger the self-pinning at larger (or smaller) particle concentrations. The deposition pattern of pendant drops with silica particles is hill-like. This is due to the large density difference between silica and water to induce high sedimentation velocity, and the particles would precipitate and aggregate along the air–liquid interface to form a hollow shell deposit. The depositions for suspensions with bi-dispersed particles, the larger silica particles would accumulate at the bottom of the deposit due to the higher sedimentation velocity, in contrast to the well-mixed in the deposits for bi-dispersed polystyrene particles. The sedimentation and capillary flow velocities were calculated and discussed. These new findings reveal that the particle density (gravity effect) can be used to adjust the sedimentation velocity to control the deposition morphology and particle size distribution even to suppress the coffee-ring effect.

As a state-of-the-art secondary battery, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have dominated the consumer electronics market since Sony unveiled the commercial secondary battery with LiCoO2 as the negative electrode material in the early 1990s. The key to the efficient operation of LIBs lies in the effective contact between the Li-ion-rich electrolyte and the active material particles in the electrode. The particle properties of the electrode materials affect the lithium ion diffusion path, diffusion resistance, contact area with the active material, the electrochemical performance and the energy density of batteries. To achieve satisfied comprehensive performance and of LIBs, it is not only necessary to focus on the modification of materials, but also to balance the properties of electrode material particles. Therefore, in this review, we analyze the influence of particle properties on the battery performance from three perspectives: particle size, particle size distribution, and particle shape. A deep understanding of the effect and mechanism of particles on electrodes and batteries will help develop and manufacture practical LIBs.

Carbon dots (CDs), because of their unique properties, are being rapidly developed as important luminescent materials for imaging, sensing, and use in photonic devices. However, most of the reported fundamental properties of the CDs are results of investigations conducted in the solution state, which may be completely different from those conducted in the solid state. In this work, we study the luminescence properties, photostability, and the dynamics of CDs in different matrix environments, from ensemble to the single-particle level. We observed that the properties associated with the emission centers and photostability of CDs were extremely sensitive to the local chemical environment. A better understanding of the dependence of the spectroscopic properties of CDs on the complex local chemical environment is an important step toward finding new ways of controlling the optical properties of CDs and optimizing their use in various applications.
