This study analyzed the toxicity by residual contact and the repellency effect of the essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha piperita, Melaleuca alternifolia, and Commiphora myrrha and their mixtures on adult females of Tetranychus urticae in laboratory and protected cultivation. The essential oil of C. myrrha exhibited a LC50 of 0.55 ml L-1, and the mixtures R. officinalis + M. piperita + M. alternifolia + C. myrrha, C. myrrha + M. piperita, and C. myrrha + M. alternifolia showed 68%, 60%, and 36% mortality, respectively. The essential oils of C. myrrha and M. alternifolia showed 95 and 70% of repellency, respectively. Mixtures of C. myrrha + M. alternifolia, C. myrrha + M. piperita, and C. myrrha + R. officinalis provided repellency of 85, 74 and 73%, respectively. Toxicity by residual contact of the essential oil of C. myrrha in protected cultivation exhibited 93% mortality, while the acaricide fenpyroximate showed 80%. The constituents of essential oils were eucalyptol (49.66%), M. piperita menthol (48.53%), M. alternifolia terpinen-4-ol (48.93%), and C. myrrha benzyl benzoate (97.71%). The essential oil of C. myrrha and the mixtures R. officinalis + M. piperita + M. alternifolia + C. myrrha and C. myrrha + M. piperita showed significant mortality. However, further studies are needed to assess the cost/benefit ratio and the effects on non-target organisms.

Background: Using an age and gender matched-pair case-control study, we aimed to estimate the long-term prevalence of psychophysical olfactory, gustatory , and chemesthesis impairment at least one year after SARS-CoV-2 infection considering the background of chemosensory dysfunction in non-COVID-19 population. Methodology: This case-controlled study included 100 patients who were home-isolated for mildly symptomatic COVID-19 between March and April 2020. One control regularly tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection and always tested negative was matched to each case according to gender and age. Chemosensory function was investigated by a comprehensive psychophysical evaluation including ortho- and retronasal olfaction and an extensive assessment of gustatory function. Differences in chemosensory parameters were evaluated through either Fisher’s exact test or Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The psychophysical assessment of chemosensory function took place after a median of 401 days from the first SARS-CoV-2 positive swab. The evaluation of orthonasal smell identified 46% and 10% of cases and controls, respectively, having olfactory dysfunction, with 7% of COVID-19 cases being functionally anosmic. Testing of gustatory function revealed a 27% of cases versus 10% of controls showing a gustatory impairment. Nasal trigeminal sensitivity was significantly lower in cases compared to controls. Persistent chemosensory impairment was associated with emotional distress and depression. Conclusion: More than one year after the onset of COVID-19, cases exhibited an excess of olfactory, gustatory , and chemesthesis disturbances compared to matched-pair controls with these symptoms being associated to emotional distress and depression.

Chemosensory impairments have been established as a specific indicator of COVID-19. They affect most patients and may persist long past the resolution of respiratory symptoms, representing an unprecedented medical challenge. Since the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic started, we now know much more about smell, taste, and chemesthesis loss associated with COVID-19. However, the temporal dynamics and characteristics of recovery are still unknown. Here, capitalizing on data from the Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research (GCCR) crowdsourced survey, we assessed chemosensory abilities after the resolution of respiratory symptoms in participants diagnosed with COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in Italy. This analysis led to the identification of two patterns of chemosensory recovery, partial and substantial, which were found to be associated with differential age, degrees of chemosensory loss, and regional patterns. Uncovering the self-reported phenomenology of recovery from smell, taste, and chemesthetic disorders is the first, yet essential step, to provide healthcare professionals with the tools to take purposeful and targeted action to address chemosensory disorders and their severe discomfort.

Odor perception begins with the detection of odorant molecules by the main olfactory epithelium located in the nasal cavity. Odorant molecules bind to and activate a large family of G-protein-coupled odorant receptors and trigger a cAMP-mediated transduction cascade that converts the chemical stimulus into an electrical signal transmitted to the brain. Morever, odorant receptors and cAMP signaling plays a relevant role in olfactory sensory neuron development and axonal targeting to the olfactory bulb. This review will first explore the physiological response of olfactory sensory neurons to odorants and then analyze the different components of cAMP signaling and their different roles in odorant detection and olfactory sensory neuron development.

However, these reports have downplayed or failed to distinguish potential effects on taste, ignored chemesthesis, and generally lacked quantitative measurements. Here, we report the development, implementation, and initial results of a multilingual, international questionnaire to assess self-reported quantity and quality of perception in 3 distinct chemosensory modalities (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) before and during COVID-19. In the first 11 days after questionnaire launch, 4039 participants (2913 women, 1118 men, and 8 others, aged 19-79) reported a COVID-19 diagnosis either via laboratory tests or clinical assessment. Importantly, smell, taste, and chemesthetic function were each significantly reduced compared to their status before the disease. Difference scores (maximum possible change +/- 100) revealed a mean reduction of smell (-79.7 +/- 28.7, mean +/- standard deviation), taste (-69.0 +/- 32.6), and chemesthetic (-37.3 +/- 36.2) function during COVID-19. Qualitative changes in olfactory ability (parosmia and phantosmia) were relatively rare and correlated with smell loss. Importantly, perceived nasal obstruction did not account for smell loss. Furthermore, chemosensory impairments were similar between participants in the laboratory test and clinical assessment groups. These results show that COVID-19-associated chemosensory impairment is not limited to smell but also affects taste and chemesthesis.The multimodal impact of COVID-19 and the lack of perceived nasal obstruction suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may disrupt sensory-neural mechanisms.

The Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an internal primary pest of stored grains of great economic importance. Few insecticides registered for fumigation control for S. zeamais exist, which makes it necessary to search for more control alternatives. Thus, the objective of this work was to assess acute toxicity, sublethal effect, survival and behavioral response of the major components of essential oils, Thymol, Camphora, Terpineol, Canpheno, Eucalyptol, Limonene, β Pinene and Eugenol; and the mixtures of these components on S. zeamais. The results showed that the mixtures of the major components caused acute toxicity, reduced survival time and offspring production, in addition to altering the behavioral activity of S. zeamais. The mixture Camphor + Canphene presented a synergistic effect, with LC50 and LC90 of 2.77 and 20.34 µl/ml, respectively. The mixtures of the major components proved to be promising products for the control of S. zeamais.

International audience; The development of “portable, low cost and low consumption” gas microsensors is one of the strong needs for embedded portable devices in many fields such as public domain. In this paper, a new approach is presented on making, on the same chip, a network of head-to-tail facing PN junctions in order to miniaturize the sensor network and considerably reduce the required power for heating each cell independently. This paper is about recognizing a device that integrates both sensing and self-heating. This first study aims to evaluate the possibilities of this type of diode network for use as a gas sensor. The first part concerns the description of the technological process that is based on a doped polysilicon wafer in which a thin layer of metal oxide (a gallium-doped zinc oxide in our case) is deposited by RF sputtering. An electrical model will be proposed to explain the operation and advantage of this approach. We will show the two types of tests that have been carried out (static and dynamic) as well as the first encouraging results of these electrical characterizations under variable atmospheres.

Intracellular metabolism of excess glucose induces mitochondrial dysfunction and diversion of glycolytic intermediates into branch pathways, leading to cell injury and inflammation. Hyperglycemia-driven overproduction of mitochondrial superoxide was thought to be the initiator of these biochemical changes, but accumulating evidence indicates that mitochondrial superoxide generation is dispensable for diabetic complications development. Here we tested the hypothesis that hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α and related bioenergetic changes (Warburg effect) play an initiating role in glucotoxicity. By using human endothelial cells and macrophages, we demonstrate that high glucose (HG) induces HIF-1α activity and a switch from oxidative metabolism to glycolysis and its principal branches. HIF1-α silencing, the carbonyl-trapping and anti-glycating agent ʟ-carnosine, and the glyoxalase-1 inducer trans-resveratrol reversed HG-induced bioenergetics/biochemical changes and endothelial-monocyte cell inflammation, pointing to methylglyoxal (MGO) as the non-hypoxic stimulus for HIF1-α induction. Consistently, MGO mimicked the effects of HG on HIF-1α induction and was able to induce a switch from oxidative metabolism to glycolysis. Mechanistically, methylglyoxal causes HIF1-α stabilization by inhibiting prolyl 4-hydroxylase domain 2 enzyme activity through post-translational glycation. These findings introduce a paradigm shift in the pathogenesis and prevention of diabetic complications by identifying HIF-1α as essential mediator of glucotoxicity, targetable with carbonyl-trapping agents and glyoxalase-1 inducers.

The use of agrochemicals has influenced the increase in agricultural productivity. However, the concern about damage to the human health and to the environment, resulting from the indiscriminate use of pesticides, has increased worldwide. Alternative methods for controlling pests and diseases have been proposed to maintain productivity and quality of life. A possibility is to use compounds produced by the secondary metabolism of plants, such as the essential oils. Some of these substances perform inhibitory or stimulatory activity on the development of other organisms. Plants from the genus Eucalyptus have been investigated and were chosen to be studied in the present work, due to the traditional knowledge regarding the potential of the essential oils from some species, as well as, for the need to use residues from their production. Therefore, were determined the yield, identified the compounds from the essential oils of E. urophylla and the hybrid E. urophylla x E. camaldulensis, and evaluated their biological activity through bioassays, investigating the phyto-cyto-genotoxicity and mutagenicity using Lactuca sativa and Sorghum bicolor as model plants. The essential oil from the hybrid provided a higher yield. Eucalyptol was the major compound identified for both oils, representing more than 85% of the compounds present. Both E. urophylla and the hybrid showed phyto-cyto-genotoxic, mutagenic effects, and clastogenic and aneugenic mechanisms of action, promoting epigenetic changes in the meristematic cells of L. sativa. The results point out to the bioherbicidal potential of these essential oils. El uso de agroquímicos ha influido en el aumento de la productividad agrícola. Sin embargo, la preocupación por los daños a la salud humana y al medio ambiente, resultantes del uso indiscriminado de plaguicidas, ha aumentado en todo el mundo. Se han propuesto métodos alternativos de control de plagas y enfermedades para mantener la productividad y la calidad de vida. Una posibilidad es utilizar compuestos producidos por el metabolismo secundario de las plantas, como los aceites esenciales. Algunas de estas sustancias ejercen una actividad inhibidora o estimulante del desarrollo en otros organismos. Se investigaron y seleccionaron plantas del género Eucalyptus para ser estudiadas en este trabajo, debido al conocimiento tradicional sobre el potencial de los aceites esenciales de algunas especies, así como a la necesidad de utilizar residuos de su producción. Por lo tanto, se determinaron los rendimientos, se identificaron los compuestos de los aceites esenciales de E. urophylla y el híbrido E. urophylla x E. camaldulensis, y se evaluó su actividad biológica mediante bioensayos, investigando la fitocitogenotoxicidad y mutagenicidad utilizando Lactuca sativa y Sorghum bicolor como planta modelo. El aceite esencial híbrido proporcionó el mayor rendimiento. El eucaliptol fue el principal compuesto identificado para ambos aceites, representando más del 85% de los compuestos presentes. TMEM16F is involved in several physiological processes, such as blood coagulation, bone development and virus infections. This protein acts both as a Ca2+-dependent phospholipid scramblase and a Ca2+-activated ion channel but several studies have reported conflicting results about the ion selectivity of the TMEM16F-mediated current. Here, we have performed a detailed side-by-side comparison of the ion selectivity of TMEM16F using the whole-cell and inside-out excised patch configurations to directly compare the results. In inside-out configuration, Ca2+-dependent activation was fast and the TMEM16F-mediated current was activated in a few milliseconds, while in whole-cell recordings full activation required several minutes. We determined the relative permeability between Na+ and Cl¯ (PNa/PCl) using the dilution method in both configurations. The TMEM16F-mediated current was highly nonselective, but there were differences depending on the configuration of the recordings. In whole-cell recordings, PNa/PCl was approximately 0.5, indicating a slight preference for Cl¯ permeation. In contrast, in inside-out experiments the TMEM16F channel showed a higher permeability for Na+ with PNa/PCl reaching 3.7. Our results demonstrate that the time dependence of Ca2+ activation and the ion selectivity of TMEM16F depend on the recording configuration.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of various titanium abutment modifications on the behaviour of peri-implant soft tissue healing, inflammation and maintenance. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic database research until 30 April 2019 was performed. A meta-analysis (MA) for each outcome parameter was performed by using the random-effects models with the DerSimonian-Laird estimator. RESULTS Ten studies were included in the present review. Four studies with a long follow-up (5-6 years) reported the outcomes in a heterogeneous way and were suitable for MA. Six studies (4 RCT, 2 CCT) including 118 patients and 182 implants dealing with a modified healing abutment surface and short follow-up were selected for MA. The MA for PI and BoP as outcome showed no significant differences between surfaces (PI: P = 0.091; BoP: P = 0.099). The MA for PD as outcome showed no significant differences between surfaces (P = 0.488). No statistical significance was found by evaluating each mixed-effects model for potential moderators (type of study, study design, number of implants, follow-up length). The other four studies with a longer follow-up (5-6 years) reported contradictory results depending on the surface treatment investigated. CONCLUSIONS Within their limits, the present findings suggest that peri-implant soft tissue may not be affected by the surface treatment of titanium abutments on the short term. Contrasting results are reported in longer follow-up periods depending on the technique used to modify the abutment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinicians should carefully evaluate the use of a modified titanium surface in their practice. Even if no differences in terms of inflammation are present at short term, these findings need to be validated in long-term studies.

Abstract The Ca2+‐activated Cl– channels TMEM16A and TMEM16B have relevant roles in many physiological processes including neuronal excitability and regulation of Cl– homeostasis. Here, we examined the presence of Ca2+‐activated Cl– channels in taste cells of mouse vallate papillae by using immunohistochemistry and electrophysiological recordings. By using immunohistochemistry we showed that only TMEM16A, and not TMEM16B, was expressed in taste bud cells where it largely co‐localized with the inwardly rectifying K+ channel KNCJ1 in the apical part of type I cells. By using whole‐cell patch‐clamp recordings in isolated cells from taste buds, we measured an average current of −1083 pA at −100 mV in 1.5 μm Ca2+ and symmetrical Cl– in type I cells. Ion substitution experiments and blockage by Ani‐9, a specific TMEM16A channel blocker, indicated that Ca2+ activated anionic currents through TMEM16A channels. We did not detect any Ca2+‐activated Cl– currents in type II or III taste cells. ATP is released by type II cells in response to various tastants and reaches type I cells where it is hydrolysed by ecto‐ATPases. Type I cells also express P2Y purinergic receptors and stimulation of type I cells with extracellular ATP produced large Ca2+‐activated Cl− currents blocked by Ani‐9, indicating a possible role of TMEM16A in ATP‐mediated signalling. This research investigated for the first time the influence of the single fractions (proteins, lipids, starch, cellulose, fibers and sugars) composing Household Food Wastes on Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA). A production at different pH (uncontrolled, 5.5 and 7.0): both the amount and profile of VFA were investigated. It was found that fractions rich in proteins and starch led to the greatest VFA productions (12–15g/L), especially at neutral pH condition. The present post-trial follow-up investigated the influence of titanium implants with different surface treatments on clinical behavior of soft and hard peri-implant tissues. Each of the 18 included patients received at least two adjacent implants: one control implant with a dual acid-etched (DAE) surface in their apical portion and a machined coronal part, and one test implant with a DAE surface up to its coronal portion. Peri-implant bone level change (BLC), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PI) were recorded. A total of 42 implants was inserted. The mean follow-up period was 9.3 years (range: 5–16 years) and there were six dropouts. No implant failed. Moderate crestal bone remodeling occurred during the first year after implant insertion, with lower bone loss next to test implants compared to control ones (0.80 vs. 1.39 mm, p = 0.002). This difference was also detected at the 5- (p = 0.011), 6- (p = 0.008) and 7-year follow-up appointment (p = 0.027). No statistically significant differences were found in bone resorption between implants rehabilitated with ceramic vs. composite resin veneering material. No statistically significant differences were detected between test and control implants for BOP, PI, and PD at any time point. The results of the present study suggest that DAE surfaces reduce peri-implant bone loss in the initial phase of healing compared to machined surfaces, while they do not significantly affect soft peri-implant tissue and bone maintenance in the long-term. In conclusion, the minimally rough surfaces favour peri-implant bone maintenance and their effect is greater in the first year post implant insertion.

Simple Summary Diabetic people have an increased risk of developing several types of cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer. The higher availability of glucose and/or lipids that characterizes diabetes and obesity is responsible for the increased production of highly reactive carbonyl compounds, a condition referred to as “carbonyl stress”. Also known as glycotoxins and lipotoxins, these compounds react quickly and damage various molecules in cells forming final products termed AGEs (advanced glycation end-products). AGEs were shown to markedly accelerate tumor development in an experimental model of pancreatic cancer and AGE inhibition prevented the tumor-promoting effect of diabetes. In humans, carbonyl stress has been associated with the risk of pancreatic cancer and recognized as a possible contributor to other cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer. These findings suggest that carbonyl stress is involved in cancer development and growth and may be the mechanistic link between diabetes and pancreatic cancer, thus representing a potential drug target. Abstract Both type 2 (T2DM) and type 1 (T1DM) diabetes mellitus confer an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in humans. The magnitude and temporal trajectory of the risk conferred by the two forms of diabetes are similar, suggesting a common mechanism. Carbonyl stress is a hallmark of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia, which accompanies T2DM, prediabetes, and obesity. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that diabetes promotes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in experimental models of T2DM, a finding recently confirmed in a T1DM model. The carbonyl stress markers advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), the levels of which are increased in diabetes, were shown to markedly accelerate tumor development in a mouse model of Kras-driven PDAC. Consistently, inhibition of AGE formation by trapping their carbonyl precursors (i.e., reactive carbonyl species, RCS) prevented the PDAC-promoting effect of diabetes. Considering the growing attention on carbonyl stress in the onset and progression of several cancers, including breast, lung and colorectal cancer, this review discusses the mechanisms by which glucose and lipid imbalances induce a status of carbonyl stress, the oncogenic pathways activated by AGEs and their precursors RCS, and the potential use of carbonyl-scavenging agents and AGE inhibitors in PDAC prevention and treatment, particularly in high-risk diabetic individuals.

Adiposopathy is a pathological adipose tissue (AT) response to overfeeding characterized by reduced AT expandability due to impaired adipogenesis, which favors inflammation, insulin resistance (IR), and abnormal glucose regulation. However, it is unclear whether defective adipogenesis causes metabolic derangement also independently of an increased demand for fat storage. As galectin-3 has been implicated in both adipocyte differentiation and glucose homeostasis, we tested this hypothesis in galectin-3 knockout (Lgal3−/−) mice fed a standard chow. In vitro, Lgal3−/− adipocyte precursors showed impaired terminal differentiation (maturation). Two-month-old Lgal3−/− mice showed impaired AT maturation, with reduced adipocyte size and expression of adipogenic genes, but unchanged fat mass and no sign of adipocyte degeneration/death or ectopic fat accumulation. AT immaturity was associated with AT and whole-body inflammation and IR, glucose intolerance, and hyperglycemia. Five-month-old Lgal3−/− mice exhibited a more mature AT phenotype, with no difference in insulin sensitivity and expression of inflammatory cytokines versus WT animals, though abnormal glucose homeostasis persisted and was associated with reduced β-cell function. These data show that adipogenesis capacity per se affects AT function, insulin sensitivity, and glucose homeostasis independently of increased fat intake, accumulation and redistribution, thus uncovering a direct link between defective adipogenesis, IR and susceptibility to diabetes.

Background: Ultraviolet (UV) and non-thermal plasma functionalization are surface treatment modalities that seem able to improve osseointegration. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the effect of the two methods and possible differences. Materials and Methods: The systematic research of pre-clinical animal studies was conducted up to May 2020 in the databases PubMed/Medline, Scopus and the Cochrane Lybrary. A meta-analysis was performed by using the DerSimonian–Laird estimator in random-effects models. Results: Through the digital search, 518 articles were identified; after duplicate removal and screening process 10 papers were included. Four studies evaluating UV treatment in rabbits were included in the meta-analysis. The qualitative evaluation of the included studies showed that both UV photofunctionalization and non-thermal plasma argon functionalization of titanium implant surfaces might be effective in vivo to improve the osseointegration. The meta-analysis on four studies evaluating UV treatment in rabbits showed that bone to implant contact values (expressed as standardized mean differences and raw mean differences) were significantly increased in the bio-activated groups when follow-up times were relatively homogeneous, although a high heterogeneity (I2 > 75%) was found in all models. Conclusions: The present systematic review and meta-analysis on pre-clinical studies demonstrated that chair-side treatment of implants with UV or non-thermal plasma appear to be effective for improving osseointegration. This systematic review supports further clinical trials on this topic.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the acute toxicity, sublethal effect and behavioral alteration of L. serricorne exposed to the major components of essential oils, thymol, camphor, terpineol, camphene, eucalyptol, limonene, βpinene and eugenol. The adults of L. serricorne , aged 5 days, not sexed, were submitted to acute toxicity by fumigation, used fumigation chambers, 200 ml glass containers with 20 insects, subsequently the sublethal effect, longevity and behavioral response. The results show that the major components and mixtures caused acute toxicity, reduced the survival time and production of offspring and altered the behavioral activity of L. serricorne. The major components eucalyptol and terpineol presented 65% mortality, in which the mixtures terpineol + eucalyptol and camphor + thymol presented 47 and 52% over adults of L. serricorne. The mixture between terpineol + limonene allowed only 4% ofadults to L. serricorneemerge. Behavioral activity was altered by the eucalyptol + eugenol mixture. The results showed that the major components and mixtures are promising for the preparation and production of new insecticides. El objetivo deste trabajo fue evaluar la toxicidad aguda, el efecto subletal y la alteración del comportamiento de L. serricorne expuesto a los componentes principales de los aceites esenciales, timol, alcanfor, terpineol, canfeno, eucaliptol, limoneno, βpineno y eugenol. Los adultos de L. serricorne , de 5 días de edad, no sexados, fueron sometidos a toxicidad aguda por fumigación, utilizaron cámaras de fumigación, envases de vidrio de 200 ml con 20 insectos, posteriormente el efecto subletal, la longevidad y respuesta conductual Los resultados muestran que los principales componentes y mezclas causaron toxicidad aguda, redujeron el tiempo de supervivencia y la producción de descendencia y alteraron la actividad conductual de L. serricorne. Los componentes principales eucalyptol y terpineol presentaron un 65% de mortalidad, en el que las mezclas terpineol + eucalyptol y alcanfor + timol presentaron 47 y 52% sobre los adultos de L. serricorne. La mezcla entre terpineol + limoneno permitió que solo4% de los adultos de emergiera elL. serricorne. La actividad conductual fue alterada por la mezcla de eucaliptol + eugenol. Los resultados mostraron que los principales componentes y mezclas son prometedores para la preparación y producción de nuevos insecticidas. Os resultados mostram que os componentes majoritários e as misturas causaram toxicidade aguda, reduziu o tempo de sobrevivência e produção de proles e alterou a atividade comportamental de L. serricorne. Os componentes majoritários eucaliptol e terpineol apresentaram 65% de mortalidade, na qual as misturas terpineol+eucaliptol e cânfora+timol apresentaram 47 e 52% sobre os adultos de L. serricorne. A mistura entre terpineol+limonene permitiu apenas 4% de emergência de adultos de L. serricorne. A atividade comportamental foi alterada pela mistura eucaliptol+eugenol. Os resultados evidenciaram que os componentes majoritários e as misturas são promissores para elaboração e produção de novos inseticidas.

Diabetes is an established risk factor for pancreatic cancer (PaC), together with obesity, a Western diet, and tobacco smoking. The common mechanistic link might be the accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which characterizes all of the above disease conditions and unhealthy habits. Surprisingly, however, the role of AGEs in PaC has not been examined yet, despite the evidence of a tumour-promoting role of receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), the receptor for AGEs. Here, we tested the hypothesis that AGEs promote PaC through RAGE activation. To this end, we investigated the effects of the AGE Nϵ -carboxymethyllysine (CML) in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) cell lines and in a mouse model of Kras-driven PaC interbred with a bioluminescent model of proliferation. Tumour growth was monitored in vivo by bioluminescence imaging and confirmed by histology. CML promoted PDA cell growth and RAGE expression, in a concentration-dependent and time-dependent manner, and activated downstream tumourigenic signalling pathways. These effects were counteracted by RAGE antagonist peptide (RAP). Exogenous AGE administration to PaC-prone mice induced RAGE upregulation in pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs) and markedly accelerated progression to invasive PaC. At 11 weeks of age (6 weeks of CML treatment), PaC was observed in eight of 11 (72.7%) CML-treated versus one of 11 (9.1%) vehicle-treated [control (Ctr)] mice. RAP delayed PanIN development in Ctr mice but failed to prevent PaC promotion in CML-treated mice, probably because of competition with soluble RAGE for binding to AGEs and/or compensatory upregulation of the RAGE homologue CD166/ activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule, which also favoured tumour spread. These findings indicate that AGEs modulate the development and progression of PaC through receptor-mediated mechanisms, and might be responsible for the additional risk conferred by diabetes and other conditions characterized by increased AGE accumulation. Finally, our data suggest that an AGE reduction strategy, instead of RAGE inhibition, might be suitable for the risk management and prevention of PaC. Professional oral hygiene is fundamental to prevent peri-implant disease. Appropriate instruments should be used in patients with restorations supported by dental implants: they should be effective in deposits removal without damaging the implant components surface. The aim of the present study is to investigate and summarize the results regarding the efficacy of oral hygiene techniques described in the literature in the last 10 years in patients rehabilitated with dental implants not affected by perimplantitis. The present systematic review was conducted according to guidelines reported in the indications of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The focused question was: “Which are the most effective instruments for professional oral hygiene on implants not affected by perimplantitis?”. The initial database search yielded a total of 934 entries found in PubMed®/MEDLINE and Cochrane Library. After full text review and application of the eligibility criteria, the final selection consisted of 19 articles. The risk of bias of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa scale (NOS) and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Curette, scalers and air polishing were the devices most frequently investigated in the included studies. In particular, glycine powder air polishing appeared to be significantly effective in reducing peri-implant inflammation and plaque around implants. The application of the more recent erythritol powder air polishing also yielded good clinical outcomes. Further studies are needed to improve the knowledge on the topic in order to develop standardized protocols and understand the specific indications for different types of implant-supported rehabilitations.

Background and Purpose The advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) participate in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN) by promoting renal inflammation and injury. L-carnosine acts as a quencher of the AGE precursors reactive carbonyl species (RCS), but it is rapidly inactivated by carnosinase. This study evaluated the effect of FL-926-16, a carnosinase-resistant and bioavailable carnosine derivative, on the onset and progression of DN in db/db mice. Experimental Approach Adult male db/db mice and coeval db/m controls were left untreated or treated with FL-926-16 (30 mg·kg-1 body weight) from week 6 to 20 (prevention protocol) or from week 20 to 34 (regression protocol). Key Results In the prevention protocol, FL-926-16 significantly attenuated increases in creatinine (-80%), albuminuria (-77%), proteinuria (-75%), mean glomerular area (-34%), fractional (-40%) and mean (-42%) mesangial area in db/db mice. This protective effect was associated with reduction of glomerular matrix protein expression and cell apoptosis, circulating and tissue oxidative and carbonyl stress, and renal inflammatory markers, including the NLRP3 inflammasome. In the regression protocol, progression of DN was completely blocked, though it was not reversed by FL-926-16. In cultured mesangial cells, FL-926-16 prevented NLRP3 expression induced by RCS, but not by the AGE Ne-carboxymethyllysine. Conclusion and Implications These data show that FL-926-16 is effective in preventing the onset and halting progression of DN in db/db mice by quenching RCS, thereby reducing the accumulation of their protein adducts and the consequent inflammatory response. In a future perspective, this novel compound may represent a promising AGE-reducing approach for DN therapy.

Red Mud (RM) based gold catalysts were prepared by supporting gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the RM residue reduced either with H2 or with ethanol – which promoted partial coating of the RM with carbon. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, elemental analysis CHN, transmission electron microscopy and EDS microanalysis. Their catalytic performance was evaluated in the liquid-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen, for the first time, as far as we know. The results showed that AuNPs with diameters of around 10 nm were successfully supported and distributed on the surface of red mud based materials. Furthermore, carbon coating allowed better incorporation of AuNPs on the material surface and better dispersion of the material into the reaction solutions. AuNPs supported on RM reduced in ethanol and, therefore, coated with carbon showed better catalytic performance than AuNPs supported on MR reduced in hydrogen.

Background Type 1 and 2 diabetes confer an increased risk of pancreatic cancer (PaC) of similar magnitude, suggesting a common mechanism. The recent finding that PaC incidence increases linearly with increasing fasting glucose levels supports a central role for hyperglycaemia, which is known to cause carbonyl stress and advanced glycation end-product (AGE) accumulation through increased glycolytic activity and non-enzymatic reactions. This study investigated the impact of hyperglycaemia on invasive tumour development and the underlying mechanisms involved. Methods Pdx1-Cre;LSL-KrasG12D/+ mice were interbred with mitosis luciferase reporter mice, rendered diabetic with streptozotocin and treated or not with carnosinol (FL-926-16), a selective scavenger of reactive carbonyl species (RCS) and, as such, an inhibitor of AGE formation. Mice were monitored for tumour development by in vivo bioluminescence imaging. At the end of the study, pancreatic tissue was collected for histology/immunohistochemistry and molecular analyses. Mechanistic studies were performed in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell lines challenged with high glucose, glycolysis- and glycoxidation-derived RCS, their protein adducts AGEs and sera from diabetic patients. Results Cumulative incidence of invasive PaC at 22 weeks of age was 75% in untreated diabetic vs 25% in FL-926-16-gtreated diabetic and 8.3% in non-diabetic mice. FL-926-16 treatment suppressed systemic and pancreatic carbonyl stress, extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2 activation, and nuclear translocation of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in pancreas. In vitro, RCS scavenging and AGE elimination completely inhibited cell proliferation stimulated by high glucose, and YAP proved essential in mediating the effects of both glucose-derived RCS and their protein adducts AGEs. However, RCS and AGEs induced YAP activity through distinct pathways, causing reduction of Large Tumour Suppressor Kinase 1 and activation of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor/ERK signalling pathway, respectively. Conclusions An RCS scavenger and AGE inhibitor prevented the accelerating effect of diabetes on PainINs progression to invasive PaC, showing that hyperglycaemia promotes PaC mainly through increased carbonyl stress. In vitro experiments demonstrated that both circulating RCS/AGEs and tumour cell-derived carbonyl stress generated by excess glucose metabolism induce proliferation by YAP activation, hence providing a molecular mechanism underlying the link between diabetes and PaC (and cancer in general).

Microglia are highly plastic cells that change their properties in response to their microenvironment. By using immunofluorescence, live-cell imaging, electrophysiological recordings and RNA sequencing, we investigated the regulation of modified bacterial cellulose (mBC) nanofibril substrates on microglial properties. We demonstrate that mBC substrates induce ramified microglia with constantly extending and retracting processes, reminiscent of what is observed in vivo. Patch-clamp recordings show that microglia acquire a more negative resting membrane potential and have increased inward rectifier K+ currents, caused by an upregulation of Kir2.1 channels. Transcriptome analysis shows upregulation of genes involved in the immune response and downregulation of genes linked to cell adhesion and cell motion. Furthermore, Arp2/3 complex activation and integrin-mediated signaling modulate microglial morphology and motility. Our studies demonstrate that mBC nanofibril substrates modulate microglial phenotype, paving the way for a microglia-material interface that may be very valuable for anti-neuroinflammatory drug screening.

International audience; Zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used for its capability to detect gases. There are several known methods to synthetize and deposit ZnO for gas sensor applications. We have developed a new process based on ZnO nanoparticles from Sigma Aldrich manufacturer deposited by an inkjet technique. The process achieved is based on stable ZnO nanoparticles ink obtained by mixing 10% weight of commercial powder with diethylene glycol (DEG). This ink has been deposited on Pamela Yoboué et al. 56 a microhotplate that can operate up to 550°C with a low power of consumption (less than 60mW). The gas tests presented in this article show good results concerning the sensor response and its stability in the presence of gases.

International audience; In this work Ga doped ZnO thin films have been deposited by RF magnetron sputtering onto a silicon micro-hotplate and their structural, microstructural and gas sensing properties have been studied. ZnO:Ga thin film with a thickness of 90 nm has been deposited onto a silicon based micro-hotplates without any photolithography process thanks to a low cost and reliable stencil mask process. Sub-ppm sensing (500 ppb) of NO2 gas at low temperature (50 °C) has been obtained with promising responses R/R0 up to 18. Micro-hotplates have been prepared using photolithographic process. The system is composed by a heating element and sensing electrodes. They are both integrated in membrane in order to have a localized heating and sensing spot onto which the sensitive thin film is deposited. The microhotplates can operate with low consumption and can heat up to 500 °C with a good stability. This system has been already published in [1]. The use of lift-off process to restrict the deposition of the thin film onto central electrodes can lead to the dissolution and/or contamination of the sensitive layer. That's why the photolithographic method was avoided and a stencil mask process was used.

Co x Fe 3-x O 4 oxide powders were synthesised by an oxalate decomposition process. Microstructural analysis like X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the composition of the prepared powders. These powders were then deposited onto alumina substrates in order to study their response under ethanol gas pulses. The gas sensing experiment was carried by a defined test protocol and several characteristics were tracked. Results showed a direct link between the proportion of cobalt and gas sensing performances.

Ga doped ZnO thin films have been deposited by Radio-Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering on fused silica substrates. The structural analysis of the n-type sensitive material showed a preferential orientation in the [001] direction. The microstructure of the thin film indicated an increasing grain size with the increase of the thicknesses. The micro sensor platforms have been fabricated with ZnO:Ga thin film deposited using a reliable stencil mask onto interdigitated electrodes containing micro-hotplates. The as fabricated micro sensor allowed to sense sub-ppm concentration (500 ppb) of nitrogen dioxide under cycled temperature mode. This system revealed promising sensing performance with a response R/R0 up to 18 at low temperature step (50 °C).

(1) Background: Intrinsic characteristics of the implant surface and the possible presence of endotoxins may affect the bone–implant interface and cause an inflammatory response. This study aims to evaluate the possible inflammatory response induced in vitro in macrophages in contact with five different commercially available dental implants. (2) Methods: one zirconia implant NobelPearl® (Nobel Biocare) and four titanium implants, Syra® (Sweden &amp, Martina), Prama® (Sweden &amp, Martina), 3iT3® (Biomet 3i) and Shard® (Mech &amp, Human), were evaluated. After 4 h of contact of murine macrophage cells J774a.1 with the implants, the total RNA was extracted, transcribed to cDNA and the gene expression of the macrophages was evaluated by quantitative PCR (qPCR) in relation to the following genes: GAPDH, YWHAZ, IL1β, IL6, TNFα, NOS2, MMP-9, MMP-8 and TIMP3. The results were statistically analyzed and compared with negative controls. (3) Results: No implant triggered a significant inflammatory response in macrophages, although 3iT3 exhibited a slight pro-inflammatory effect compared to other samples. (4) Conclusions: All the samples showed optimal outcomes without any inflammatory stimulus on the examined macrophagic cells.

Twenty years have passed since Brownlee and colleagues proposed a single unifying mechanism for diabetic complications, introducing a turning point in this field of research. For the first time, reactive oxygen species (ROS) were identified as the causal link between hyperglycemia and four seemingly independent pathways that are involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes-associated vascular disease. Before and after this milestone in diabetes research, hundreds of articles describe a role for ROS, but the failure of clinical trials to demonstrate antioxidant benefits and some recent experimental studies showing that ROS are dispensable for the pathogenesis of diabetic complications call for time to reflect. This twenty-year journey focuses on the most relevant literature regarding the main sources of ROS generation in diabetes and their role in the pathogenesis of cell dysfunction and diabetic complications. To identify future research directions, this review discusses the evidence in favor and against oxidative stress as an initial event in the cellular biochemical abnormalities induced by hyperglycemia. It also explores possible alternative mechanisms, including carbonyl stress and the Warburg effect, linking glucose and lipid excess, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the activation of alternative pathways of glucose metabolism leading to vascular cell injury and inflammation.

β-Citronellol and geraniol are bio-renewable compounds found in essential oils of various plants. Allylic oxidation of trisubstituted sterically highly encumbered carbon-carbon double bonds in their molecules with dioxygen can be efficiently catalyzed by the palladium acetate/p-benzoquinone combination under 5−10 atm of dioxygen pressure without the need for conventionally used metal co-catalysts. Both substrates gave allyl acetates in ca. 90% combined yield. The oxidation of geraniol proceeded with excellent site-selectivity involving only one of its two C C bonds. Geraniol gave both linear and branched allyl acetates in comparable yields, whereas the reaction of β-citronellol showed high regioselectivity for the corresponding branched product. Polyfunctionalized oxygenated terpenes produced from β-citronellol and geraniol are of a potential importance as ingredients for fragrance compositions.

This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of using oils extracted from seeds of soursop industrial waste for use as pharmaceutical ingredients. For that, soursop seeds were subjected to different processes of extraction of fixed oil, by chemical and mechanical routes. After characterization of fixed oils, the feasibility of using them as pharmaceutical excipients was explored by preparing creams in which the oils were used as emollient and/or antioxidant excipient. The oil extracted from soursop seeds in a Soxhlet device and ethyl ether solvent (SFO) showed a yield of 30.72 ± 0.09 % (w w−1) and, in a domestic extruder (MFO), 23.86 ± 0.78 % (w w−1). These oils showed physicochemical attributes that indicative of good preservation. The major fatty acid was the oleic acid, with 42.94–43.73 % in relative area, followed by linoleic with 29.5%–30% in relative area. In the non-grease fraction, the SFO showed considerable levels of phenolics (194.5 ± 31.1 mg kg−1) and tocopherols (608.2 ± 36.7 mg kg−1), which gave it an antioxidant potential, confirmed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl test, with a concentration effective for 50% inhibition (IC50) of 2.8 mg mL−1. Finally, the evaluation of the quality parameters of the creams, suggests that the use of fixed soursop oils to replace the synthetic ingredients usually incorporated (decyl oleate, liquid petrolatum and butylhydroxytoluene), originated formulations with adequate physical and chemical stability. These findings suggest that both oils obtained are possible candidates for use as emollients and antioxidant in pharmaceutical formulas. In addition, contributing to minimize the generation of waste from the fruit agribusiness and add economic value to a by-product generated in the production of fruit pulp.

Linalool and nerol, bio-renewable terpenic alkenyl alcohols found in many essential oils, were selectively oxidized by molecular oxygen in the presence of the chloride-free Pd(OAc) 2 / p -benzoquinone catalytic system. An efficient dioxygen-coupled catalytic turnover was achieved in the absence of auxiliary electron-transfer mediators under 5–10 atm of oxygen pressure. In both substrates, only one of two olefinic bonds was involved in the interaction with palladium, whereas the other one remained intact. Primary allylic acetates were formed as major reaction products: 8-linalyl acetate and 8-neryl acetate from linalool and nerol, respectively. In the case of linalool, the intramolecular cyclization product (known as herboxide), also resulted from the oxidation of the internal double bond, was also formed in significant amounts. All monoterpenic compounds obtained in the present work are natural products found in exotic plants or grape wines and are potentially useful as fragrance ingredients due to their pleasant scents.

Semisynthetic phenol derivatives were obtained from the natural phenols: thymol, carvacrol, eugenol, and guaiacol through catalytic oxychlorination, Williamson synthesis, and aromatic Claisen rearrangement. The compounds characterization was carried out by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry. The natural phenols and their semisynthetic derivatives were tested for their antimicrobial activity against the bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Listeria innocua, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica Typhimurium, Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica, and Bacillus cereus. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were determined using concentrations from 220 to 3.44 μg mL–1. Most of the tested compounds presented MIC values ≤220 μg mL–1 for all the bacteria used in the assays. The molecular properties of the compounds were computed with the PM6 method. α-Bisabolol, a sesquiterpene found in various essential oils, has numerous direct commercial uses in cosmetic and therapeutic formulations. In the present work, we report two novel liquid-phase processes for the catalytic oxidation of α-bisabolol with dioxygen, in which palladium salts (PdCl 2 or Pd(OAc) 2 ) are employed as sole catalysts. The addition of co-catalysts conventionally used for the re-oxidation of reduced palladium species or special ligands for their stabilization is not required. The reactions occur in non-acidic solvents, i.e., aqueous methanol or dimethylacetamide, and give exclusively the products derived from the interaction of the acyclic olefinic bond with palladium, whereas the other olefinic bond remains intact. The method allows to perform the green and simple synthesis of poly-functionalized compounds potentially useful for fine chemical industry as fragrance ingredients and synthetic intermediates, starting from a bio-renewable substrate.

Botanical insecticides based on oils and plant extracts have proven to be an efficient alternative method for pest control, as required by agroecological systems. Tephrosia vogelii (Hook.f.) has been used in agriculture as a source of green manure and in the control of pests and diseases. However, there are few studies regarding the use of compounds derived from the secondary metabolism of this plant. Chemical compounds present in the essential oil of Tephrosia vogelii flowers were identified, aiming at its use to control the aphid Cerosipha forbesi in the strawberry crop. Bioassays were carried out under laboratory and semi-field conditions, with different concentrations of the essential oil and the lethal concentrations LC50 and LC90 were estimated. Only two groups of terpenic compounds were identified in the essential oil of T. vogelii: monoterpenic hydrocarbons (alpha-pinene; limonene and ocimene) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (nerolidol, spathulenol and farnesol). The essential oil of T. vogelii presented toxic effect against C. forbesi, with the LC50 and LC90 of the insect population estimated at 0.106 and 0.380 mL/L, respectively. Under semi-field conditions, mortality increased at higher concentrations, and the LC50 and LC90 were estimated at 0.114 mL/L and 0.465 mL/L, respectively. Mortality over 90% was observed after 24 h of the essential oil application, for all of the tested concentrations, showing an insecticidal action of the oil against the aphid C. forbesi.

Glial-like supporting cells of the olfactory epithelium are involved in a variety of processes important to the function of this tissue. Henriques et al. find that supporting cells exhibit an ATP-induced, Ca2+-sensitive Cl− current produced by TMEM16A Cl− channels., Glial-like supporting (or sustentacular) cells are important constituents of the olfactory epithelium that are involved in several physiological processes such as production of endocannabinoids, insulin, and ATP and regulation of the ionic composition of the mucus layer that covers the apical surface of the olfactory epithelium. Supporting cells express metabotropic P2Y purinergic receptors that generate ATP-induced Ca2+ signaling through the activation of a PLC-mediated cascade. Recently, we reported that a subpopulation of supporting cells expresses also the Ca2+-activated Cl− channel TMEM16A. Here, we sought to extend our understanding of a possible physiological role of this channel in the olfactory system by asking whether Ca2+ can activate Cl− currents mediated by TMEM16A. We use whole-cell patch-clamp analysis in slices of the olfactory epithelium to measure dose–response relations in the presence of various intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, ion selectivity, and blockage. We find that knockout of TMEM16A abolishes Ca2+-activated Cl− currents, demonstrating that TMEM16A is essential for these currents in supporting cells. Also, by using extracellular ATP as physiological stimuli, we found that the stimulation of purinergic receptors activates a large TMEM16A-dependent Cl− current, indicating a possible role of TMEM16A in ATP-mediated signaling. Altogether, our results establish that TMEM16A-mediated currents are functional in olfactory supporting cells and provide a foundation for future work investigating the precise physiological role of TMEM16A in the olfactory system.

These metal oxides (SnO2 and binary mixture of CuO75%/ZnO25%) are prepared in the form of a serigraphy paste and deposited on an optimized silicon micro-hotplate. The sensors can be operated at temperature of 550 °C with a low energy consumption of only 55 mW. The binary and ternary mixtures of metal oxide are operated at different working temperature to optimize their sensitivity to CO.

Several factors contribute to distortion of implant prostheses during fabrication and could prevent passive, accurate adaptation between implants and implant frameworks. The misfit between implants and restorative components may be significant and possibly lead to biologic or mechanical complications. The aim of this article is to describe a laboratory luting technique used to lute implant cylinders to metal frameworks in implant prostheses. This technique provides accurate, passive fits. According to this technique, titanium implant cylinders provided with corresponding external castable cylinders are used. Implant cylinders are screwed into the analogs in the master cast while the castable cylinders on top are splinted together using castable resin to realize a castable resin pattern. After casting, the framework is adjusted and cemented to the titanium cylinders on the master cast. Due to its ease and quickness of use and clinical efficiencies, this technique is deemed particularly useful in immediate loading rehabilitations.

Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) currents (CaCCs) play important roles in many physiological processes. Recent studies have shown that TMEM16A/anoctamin1 and TMEM16B/anoctamin2 constitute CaCCs in several cell types. Here we have investigated for the first time the extracellular effects of the Cl(-) channel blocker anthracene-9-carboxylic acid (A9C) and of its non-charged analogue anthracene-9-methanol (A9M) on TMEM16B expressed in HEK 293T cells, using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. A9C caused a voltage-dependent block of outward currents and inhibited a larger fraction of the current as depolarization increased, whereas the non-charged A9M produced a small, not voltage dependent block of outward currents. A similar voltage-dependent block by A9C was measured both when TMEM16B was activated by 1.5 and 13μM Ca(2+). However, in the presence of 1.5μM Ca(2+) (but not in 13μM Ca(2+)), A9C also induced a strong potentiation of tail currents measured at -100mV after depolarizing voltages, as well as a prolongation of the deactivation kinetics. On the contrary, A9M did not produce potentiation of tail currents, showing that the negative charge is required for potentiation. Our results provide the first evidence that A9C has multiple effects on TMEM16B and that the negative charge of A9C is necessary both for voltage-dependent block and for potentiation. Future studies are required to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying these complex effects of A9C on TMEM16B. Understanding these mechanisms will contribute to the elucidation of the structure and functional properties of TMEM16B channels.

In this study, the non-food use of Brassica carinata oil for biodiesel production was investigated. B. carinata, a native plant of the Ethiopian highlands widely used as food by the Ethiopians, has recently become object of increasing interest. This is due to its better agronomic performances in areas such as Spain, California and Italy that are characterized by unfavorable environmental conditions for the cultivation of Brassica napus (by far the most common rapeseed cultivated in continental Europe). The agronomic performance and the energetic balance described here confirmed that B. carinata adapted better and was more productive both in adverse conditions (clay- and sandy-type soils and in semi-arid temperate climate) and under low cropping system when compared with B. napus. The biodiesel, produced by transesterification of the oil extracted from the B. carinata seeds, displayed physical–chemical properties suitable for the use as diesel car fuel. A comparison of the performance of B. carinata oil-derived biodiesel with a commercial biodiesel and petroleum diesel fuel was conducted as regards engine performance, regulated and unregulated exhaust emissions. These results make B. carinata a promising oil feedstock for cultivation in coastal areas of central-southern Italy, where it is more difficult to achieve the productivity potentials of B. napus, and could offer the possibility of exploiting the Mediterranean marginal areas for energetic purposes.

A novel selective palladium catalyzed oxidation of α-bisabolol by molecular oxygen under chloride-free nonacidic conditions has been developed. α-Bisabolol is a sesquiterpenic alcohol available from essential oils of various plants. The reaction proceeds in aqueous methanol solutions over the Pd(OAc)2/Cu(OAc)2 catalytic system and gives exclusively the products resulting from the interaction of palladium with a sterically encumbered internal acyclic double bond. No concomitant oxidation of the second double bond, the endocyclic one, occurs. Novel poly-functionalized sesquiterpenoid compounds obtained at the oxidation of α-bisabolol are potentially interesting for cosmetic, fragrance and pharmaceutical applications.

The essential oil of Psidium guajava L. has been studied for pharmacological and industrial purposes, without considering the plant's genotype regarding the heterogeneity of its composition. The present study aimed to characterize the chemotype diversity of the essential oil extracted from the leaves of 22 genotypes of P. guajava grown in two different environments in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, and to identify the different chemical markers present in these plants. Essential oil from the leaves of the P. guajava genotypes was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirty-three compounds were identified, comprising 87.5-99.0% of the total composition, with a prevalence of sesquiterpenes in all samples. The major compounds identified consisted of (E)-trans-Caryophyllene, α-Humulene, trans-Nerolidol, β-Bisabolene, β-Bisabolol, and Hinesol, the first of which was identified as a possible chemical marker for the species. Multivariate factor analysis of the chemical composition of P. guajava oil identified three chemotypes: Commercial - PAL, SEC, PS, PET, C7, C11, and C17MI, characterized by high levels of β-Selinene, α-Selinene, Hinesol, and 14-hydroxy-epi-(E)-caryophyllene, with β-Selinene and α-Selinene as the chemical markers; C10 and C13, exhibiting high levels of Elemol, trans-Nerolidol, trans-β-Eudesmol, and (2Z, 6Z)-Farnesol, which were indicated as chemical markers, and Cortibel - C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C8, C9, C12, C14, C15, C16, C17LI, which retained high levels of α-Cedrene, cis-α-Bergamotene, α-Humulene, Humulene epoxide, epi-α-Cadinol, β-Bisabolol, and α-Bisabolol, with β-Bisabolol and α-Bisabolol as the chemical markers. The use of guava genotypes with different chemotypes, that are agronomically favorable to fruit production and essential oil exploitation adds value to the crop and renders it more sustainable. Given guava crops produce large amounts of leaf biomass, resulting from successive prunings, the extraction of their essential oil, which retains commercially valuable compounds, can be feasible.
