Abstract In the realm of multiferroicity in 2D magnets, whether magnetic and polar skyrmions can coexist within a single topological entity has emerged as an important question. Here, we study Janus 2D magnets CrInX 3 (X=Se, Te) for a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic ground state, magnetic excited state, and corresponding ferroelectric polarization by first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Specifically, we have thoroughly elucidated the magnetic exchange mechanisms, and have fully exemplified the magnetic field dependence of the magnon spectrum. More importantly, our study reveals a previously unrecognized, remarkably large spin-spiral-induced ferroelectric polarization (up to 194.9 μC/m2) in both compounds. We propose an approach to identify polar skyrmions within magnetic skyrmions, based on the observed direct correlation between spin texture and polarization density. Elucidating this correlation not only deepens our understanding of magnetic skyrmions but also paves the way for innovative research in the realm of multiferroic skyrmions.

One-step hydrothermal method has been used to synthesize YMnO3@NiO (YMO@NO) photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of oil and gas field wastewater under simulated solar irradiation. Through various characterization methods, it has been confirmed that the YMO@NO photocatalyst comprises only YMO and NO, without any other impurities. The microstructure characterization confirmed that the YMO@NO photocatalyst was composed of large squares and fine particles, and heterojunction was formed at the interface of YMO and NO. The optical properties confirm that the YMO@NO photocatalyst has high UV-vis optical absorption coefficient, suggesting that it has high UV-vis photocatalytic activity. Taking oil and gas field wastewater as degradation object, YMO@NO photocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity (98%) when the catalyst content was 1.5 g/L, the mass percentage of NO was 3%, and the irradiation time was 60 min. Capture and stability experiments confirm that the YMO@NO photocatalyst is recyclable and electrons, holes, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals play major roles in the photocatalysis process. Based on experiments and theoretical calculations, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of the YMO@NO photocatalyst is proposed.

Using KOH-modified wheat straw as the precursor, wheat straw biochar was produced through carbonization at 500 °C. Subsequently, a synthetic material containing nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was prepared via liquid phase reduction (nZVI-WSPC). To enhance its properties, chitosan (CTS) was used by crosslinking to form the new adsorbent named CTS@nZVI-WSPC. The impact of CTS on parameters such as mass ratio, initial pH value, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) in solution was investigated through one-factor experiments. Isotherm adsorption and thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC conforms to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 147.93 mg/g, and the adsorption process is endothermic. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism, as elucidated by SEM, FTIR, XPS, and XRD, suggests that the process may involve multiple mechanisms, including pore adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, chemical reduction, and surface chelation. The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC remains high after five cycles. The adsorbent is simple to operate, economical, efficient, and reusable, making it a promising candidate for the treatment of Cr(VI) in water.

This work aimed to identify the chemical compounds of Cinnamomum burmannii leaf essential oil (CBLEO) and to unravel the antibacterial mechanism of CBLEO at the molecular level for developing antimicrobials. CBLEO had 37 volatile compounds with abundant borneol (28.40%) and showed good potential to control foodborne pathogens, of which Staphylococcus aureus had the greatest inhibition zone diameter (28.72 mm) with the lowest values of minimum inhibitory concentration (1.0 μg/mL) and bactericidal concentration (2.0 μg/mL). To unravel the antibacterial action of CBLEO on S. aureus, a dynamic exploration of antibacterial growth, material leakage, ROS formation, protein oxidation, cell morphology, and interaction with genome DNA was conducted on S. aureus exposed to CBLEO at different doses (1/2–2×MIC) and times (0–24 h), indicating that CBLEO acts as an inducer for ROS production and the oxidative stress of S. aureus. To highlight the antibacterial action of CBLEO on S. aureus at the molecular level, we performed a comparative association of ROS accumulation with some key virulence-related gene (sigB/agrA/sarA/icaA/cidA/rsbU) transcription, protease production, and biofilm formation in S. aureus subjected to CBLEO at different levels and times, revealing that CBLEO-induced oxidative stress caused transcript suppression of virulence regulators (RsbU and SigB) and its targeted genes, causing a protease level increase destined for the biofilm formation and growth inhibition of S. aureus, which may be a key bactericidal action. Our findings provide valuable information for studying the antibacterial mechanism of essential oil against pathogens.

Lilium is a genus of important ornamental plants with many colouring pattern variations. Lilium auratum is the parent of Oriental hybrid lilies. A typical feature of L. auratum is the presence of red-orange special raised spots named papillae on the interior tepals. Unlike the usual raised spots, the papillae are slightly rounded or connected into sheets and usually have hairy tips. To elucidate the potential genes regulating papillae development in L. auratum, we performed high-throughput sequencing of its tepals at different stages. Genes involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway were significantly enriched during the colouration of the papillae, and CHS, F3H, F3′H, FLS, DFR, ANS, and UFGT were significantly upregulated. To identify the key genes involved in the papillae development of L. auratum, we performed weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and further analysed four modules. In total, 51, 24, 1, and 6 hub genes were identified in four WGCNA modules, MEbrown, MEyellow, MEpurple, and MEred, respectively. Then, the coexpression networks were constructed, and important genes involved in trichome development and coexpressed with anthocyanin biosynthesis genes, such as TT8, TTG1, and GEM, were identified. These results indicated that the papillae are essentially trichomes that accumulate anthocyanins. Finally, we randomly selected 12 hub genes for qRT-PCR analysis to verify the accuracy of our RNA-Seq analysis. Our results provide new insights into the papillae development in L. auratum flowers.

Glycolysis, as a multi-step oxidation process, plays important roles in the energy supply for living cells, including malignant tumor cells. Recent studies have revealed that 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (named PFKFB3), a bifunctional enzyme in glycolysis, is upregulated in a variety of malignant solid tumors and has been regarded as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of tumor patients. Based on the structure of selective PFKFB3 inhibitors, we designed and synthesized a radio-metal radiolabeled small molecule, 68Ga-5, which also showed potent selectivity in enzymatic and biochemical tests (with an IC50 value of 12.5 nM). According to further in vitro and in vivo evaluations, 68Ga-5 showed promising properties as a PET ligand, and selective accumulation in PFKFB3-positive tumors was observed in PET images (with max SUV values of 0.60). Our results indicated that radio-metal radiolabeled aminoquinoxaline derivative, as represented by 68Ga-5, held the potential to be developed as selective PFKFB3-targeted PET tracers, and further investigation and optimization would also be required for this scaffold.

Sepsis, a disease caused by severe infection, has a high mortality rate. At present, there is a lack of reliable algorithmic models for biomarker mining and diagnostic model construction for sepsis. Programmed cell death (PCD) has been shown to play a vital role in disease occurrence and progression, and different PCD-related genes have the potential to be targeted for the treatment of sepsis. In this paper, we analyzed PCD-related genes in sepsis. Implicated PCD processes include apoptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, netotic cell death, entotic cell death, lysosome-dependent cell death, parthanatos, autophagy-dependent cell death, oxeiptosis, and alkaliptosis. We screened for diagnostic-related genes and constructed models for diagnosing sepsis using multiple machine-learning models. In addition, the immune landscape of sepsis was analyzed based on the diagnosis-related genes that were obtained. In this paper, 10 diagnosis-related genes were screened for using machine learning algorithms, and diagnostic models were constructed. The diagnostic model was validated in the internal and external test sets, and the Area Under Curve (AUC) reached 0.7951 in the internal test set and 0.9627 in the external test set. Furthermore, we verified the diagnostic gene via a qPCR experiment. The diagnostic-related genes and diagnostic genes obtained in this paper can be utilized as a reference for clinical sepsis diagnosis. The results of this study can act as a reference for the clinical diagnosis of sepsis and for target discovery for potential therapeutic drugs.

The β-lactoglobulin-chlorogenic acid (LG-CA) conjugate was explored to be formed through ultrasonication, redox-pair method and their combination, the ultrasonication used a probe ultrasonic machine with a 6 mm probe at 270 W, and the frequency was 20–25 kHz. The formation of the conjugate was confirmed by SDS-PAGE with a larger molecular weight. Besides, Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Circular dichroism (CD) indicated changes in the secondary structure of the LG-CA conjugate. The α-helix and β-sheet contents of LG decreased and the unordered content increased significantly after the formation of covalent complexes. In addition, both the ultrasonic treatment and its combination with redox-pair method could significantly improve the antioxidant properties of LG. The former increased to 23.16 μmol Trolox/g sample, the latter 82–106 μmol Trolox/g sample. Therefore, ultrasonication could be used both individually and in combination with the redox-pair method to produce LG-CA conjugates with stronger antioxidant activities.

Supramolecular polymers based on supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) have received extensive attention because of their good stimulus responsiveness, processability and other properties. Herein, we report metallacycle-crosslinked supramolecular polymers via amino–yne click reaction, which were employed as well-performing elastomer materials. The supramolecular polymers cross-linked by the metallacycle not only maintained the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the metallacycle, which were used to detect nitroaromatic explosives, but also had enhanced mechanical strength and toughness and exhibited elastomeric properties. This study provides a feasible strategy for the preparation of metallacycle-based supramolecular polymers with better mechanical properties.

The intermediate FeIVO in circumneutral Fenton-like reactions is critical in selective oxidations. However, the inferior electron donation of ligands renders the reactivity of oxoiron(IV) cores. The generation and reactivity of FeIVO centres with different coordination groups (N, O, and S) were investigated by DFT calculations. Sulfur ligated oxoiron(IV) species were testified to be the most reactive centre. Fe doped MoS2 was prepared to resemble the sulfur ligated Fe complex. Rapid and persistent FeIVO accumulation from the sulfur ligated Fe complex was observed in the Fenton-like reaction. This observation provides an option for persistently configuring nonheme FeIVO species.

Abstract Information technology demands high-speed optoelectronic devices, but going beyond the one terahertz (THz) barrier is challenging due to the difficulties associated with generating, detecting, and processing high-frequency signals. Here, we show that femtosecond-laser-driven phonons can be utilized to coherently manipulate the excitonic properties of semiconductors at THz frequencies. The precise control of the pump and subsequent time-delayed broadband probe pulses enables the simultaneous generation and detection processes of both periodic lattice vibrations and their couplings with electronic states. Combining ultralow frequency Raman spectroscopy with first-principles calculations, we identify the unique phonon mode-selective and probe-energy dependent features of electron–phonon interactions in layered PdSe2. Two distinctive types of coherent phonon excitations could couple preferentially to different types of electronic excitations: the intralayer (4.3 THz) mode to carriers and the interlayer (0.35 THz) mode to excitons. This work provides new insights to understand the excited-state phonon interactions of 2D materials and to achieve future applications of optoelectronic devices operating at THz frequencies.

Liquid metal-based electronic devices are attracting increasing attention owing to their excellent flexibility and high conductivity. However, a simple way to realize liquid metal electronics on a microscale without photolithography is still challenging. Herein, the wettability and adhesion of liquid metal are controlled by combining the stirring method, femtosecond laser microfabrication, and sacrificial layer assistant. The adhesive force of liquid metal is dramatically enhanced by adjusting its oxidation. The wetting area is limited to a micro-pattern by a femtosecond laser and sacrificial layer. On this basis, a high-resolution liquid metal printing method is proposed. The printing resolution can be controlled even less than 50 μm. The resultant liquid metal pattern is applied to electronic skin, which shows uniformity, flexibility, and stability. It is anticipated that this liquid metal printing method will hold great promise in the fields of flexible electronics.

The safety of autonomous driving is closely linked to accurate depth perception. With the continuous development of autonomous driving, depth completion has become one of the crucial methods in this field. However, current depth completion methods have major shortcomings in small objects. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an end-to-end architecture with adaptive spatial feature fusion by encoder–decoder (ASFF-ED) module for depth completion. The architecture is built on the basis of the network architecture proposed in this paper, and is able to extract depth information adaptively with different weights on the specified feature map, which effectively solves the problem of insufficient depth accuracy of small objects. At the same time, this paper also proposes a depth map visualization method with a semi-quantitative visualization, which makes the depth information more intuitive to display. Compared with the currently available depth map visualization methods, this method has stronger quantitative analysis and horizontal comparison ability. Through experiments of ablation study and comparison, the results show that the method proposed in this paper exhibits a lower root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and better small object detection performance on the KITTI dataset.

We have theoretically investigated the spatial-temporal dynamics of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through a two-slit plasmonic antenna under femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. The dynamic interference of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam with the transiently excited surface plasmon polariton waves are proposed to characterize the particular spatial-temporal evolutions of EOT. It is revealed that the dynamic EOT can be flexibly switched with tunable symmetry through the respective slit of a two-slit plasmonic antenna by manipulating the phase correlation of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam. This is explained as tunable interference dynamics by phase control of surface plasmon polariton waves, allowing the dynamic modulation of EOT at optimized oblique incidences of dual-beams. Furthermore, we have obtained the unobserved traits of symmetry-broken transient spectra of EOT from the respective up- and down-slit of the antenna under crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. This study can provide fundamental insights into the ultrafast dynamics of EOT in two-slit plasmonic antennas, which can be helpful to advance a wide range of applications, such as ultrafast plasmonic switch, ultrahigh resolution imaging, the transient amplification of non-linear effects, etc.

Cells with various structures and proteins naturally come together to cooperate in vivo. This study used cell spheroids cultured in agarose micro-wells as a 3D model to study the movement of cells or spheroids toward other spheroids. The formation dynamics of tumor spheroids and the interactions of two batches of cells in the agarose micro-wells were studied. The results showed that a concave bottom micro-well (diameter: 2 mm, depth: 2 mm) prepared from 3% agarose could be used to study the interaction of two batches of cells. The initial tumor cell numbers from 5 × 103 cells/well to 6 × 104 cells/well all could form 3D spheroids after 3 days of incubation. Adding the second batch of DU 145 cells to the existing DU 145 spheroid resulted in the formation of satellite cell spheroids around the existing parental tumor spheroid. Complete fusion of two generation cell spheroids was observed when the parental spheroids were formed from 1 × 104 and 2 × 104 cells, and the second batch of cells was 5 × 103 per well. A higher amount of the second batch of cells (1 × 104 cell/well) led to the formation of independent satellite spheroids after 48 h of co-culture, suggesting the behavior of the second batch of cells towards existing parental spheroids depended on various factors, such as the volume of the parental spheroids and the number of the second batch cells. The interactions between the tumor spheroids and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) were modeled on concave agarose micro-wells. The HUVECs (3 × 103 cell/well) were observed to gather around the parental tumor spheroids formed from 1 × 104, 2 × 104, and 3 × 104 cells per well rather than aggregate on their own to form HUVEC spheroids. This study highlights the importance of analyzing the biological properties of cells before designing experimental procedures for the sequential fusion of cell spheroids. The study further emphasizes the significant roles that cell density and the volume of the spheroids play in determining the location and movement of cells.

Oral cancer is a common malignancy worldwide, accounting for 1.9% to 3.5% of all malignant tumors. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), as one of the most important cytokines, is found to play complex and crucial roles in oral cancers. It may act in a pro-tumorigenic and tumor-suppressive manner; activities of the former include cell cycle progression inhibition, tumor microenvironment preparation, apoptosis promotion, stimulation of cancer cell invasion and metastasis, and suppression of immune surveillance. However, the triggering mechanisms of these distinct actions remain unclear. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of TGF-β signal transduction, focusing on oral squamous cell and salivary adenoid systemic carcinomas as well as keratocystic odontogenic tumors. Both the supporting and contrary evidence of the roles of TGF-β is discussed. Importantly, the TGF-β pathway has been the target of new drugs developed in the past decade, some having demonstrated promising therapeutic effects in clinical trials. Therefore, the achievements of TGF-β pathway-based therapeutics and their challenges are also assessed. The summarization and discussion of the updated knowledge of TGF-β signaling pathways will provide insight into the design of new strategies for oral cancer treatment, leading to an improvement in oral cancer outcomes.

The efficient fabrication of nanochannels on hard and brittle materials is a difficult task in the field of micro and nano processing. We have realized nanochannel arrays on silica with characteristic scales varying from 50–230 nm using a single femtosecond Bessel beam pulse of 515 nm. By characterizing the surface openings, we found that the characteristic scales of the nanopore openings are inextricably linked to the surface energy deposition effect. We achieved not only three asymmetric channel profiles by adjusting the laser-sample interaction region, but also high aspect ratio nanochannels with characteristic scales about 50 nm and aspect ratios over 100. These results on hard and brittle materials provide a broader platform and application scenarios for smart particle rectifiers, DNA molecular sequencing, biosensors, and nanofluidic devices, which are also more suitable for future practical applications due to their low cost, good durability, and high productivity.

Heterocyclic compounds were widely used in many domains; pyrrolidone is a derivative of heterocycles that can be used to synthesize anticancer drugs. A new fluorine-containing rhopaladins’ analog(E)-2-(4-bromobenzoyl)-N-(tert-butyl)-4-(4-fluoro benzylidene)-5-oxo-1-propylpyrrolidine-2-carboxamide (RPDPD for short) of 2-aroyl-4-arylidene-5-oxopyrrolidine derivative was synthesized by the one-pot synthesis method and evaluated for its anti-tumor activity in vitro via CCK8 assay and annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining of HeLa cells. The results exhibited that compound RPDPD has inhibited the proliferation of HeLa in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 of 24.23 μmol/L (p < 0.05) and has low hepatotoxicity with an IC50 of 235.6 μmol/L (p < 0.05) to normal hepatocyte LO2 cells. The apoptotic assay demonstrated that compound RPDPD has induced apoptosis in HeLa cells (from 14.26 to 23.4%, p < 0.05). qRT-PCR results showed that the compound RPDPD could inhibit the expression of oncogene E6/E7 mRNA (p < 0.05) of human papillomavirus (HPV). The results of Western blot showed that the compound RPDPD promoted the expression of TIMP3 protein and inhibited the expression of MMP3 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the compound RPDPD can inhibit the proliferation of cervical cancer cells and induce the apoptosis of cervical cancer cells, and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of E6 mRNA and E7 mRNA expressions, and the anticancer effect of the compound RPDPD on cervical cancer is closely related to the TIMP3/MMP3 signaling axis.

Zinc ferrite can be found in zinc-bearing dust in ironmaking and steelmaking. It is difficult to be recovered due to its stable properties. The magnetization roasting and ammonia leaching method were used to separate iron and zinc from zinc ferrite in this study. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the key to the selective reduction of zinc ferrite to zinc oxide and ferric oxide is to control the appropriate temperature and atmosphere. The influences of the selective reduction roasting process of zinc ferrite on the conversion rate, phase change, and microevolution behavior were investigated. The microstructure analysis showed that the distribution area of iron was mainly gray, and the distribution area of zinc was mainly white grid lines. The zinc content in the white area was higher than that in the gray area. With the increase in temperature and PCO, the white area expanded and the migration of zinc and iron was accelerated, but the iron in the white area still existed. The ammonia leaching of the magnetization-roasted product showed that a zinc leaching rate of 78.12% was achieved under the following conditions: the roasting atmosphere of PCO/P(CO+CO2) = 25%, the roasting temperature of 750 °C, roasting duration for 45 min, n(NH3-H2O):n(NH4Cl) = 1:1, the solid–liquid ratio of 40 g/L, leachate concentration of 6 mol/L, leaching duration of 90 min, the leaching temperature of 50 °C, and the stirring rate of 200 rpm.

Data processing is an essential component of heavy-metal ion detection. Most of the research now uses a conventional data-processing approach, which is inefficient and time-consuming. The development of an efficient and accurate automatic measurement method for heavy-metal ions has practical implications. This paper proposes a CNN-based heavy-metal ion detection system, which can automatically, accurately, and efficiently detect the type and concentration of heavy-metal ions. First, we used square-wave voltammetry to collect data from heavy-metal ion solutions. For this purpose, a portable electrochemical constant potential instrument was designed for data acquisition. Next, a dataset of 1200 samples was created after data preprocessing and data expansion. Finally, we designed a CNN-based detection network, called HMID-NET. HMID-NET consists of a backbone and two branch networks that simultaneously detect the type and concentration of the ions in the solution. The results of the assay on 12 sets of solutions with different ionic species and concentrations showed that the proposed HMID-NET algorithm ultimately obtained a classification accuracy of 99.99% and a mean relative error of 8.85% in terms of the concentration.

DNA N6-methyladenine (6mA) has recently been found to play regulatory roles in gene expression that links to various biological processes in eukaryotic species. The functional identification of 6mA methyltransferase will be important for understanding the underlying molecular mechanism of epigenetic 6mA methylation. It has been reported that the methyltransferase METTL4 can catalyze the methylation of 6mA; however, the function of METTL4 remains largely unknown. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of the Bombyx mori homolog METTL4 (BmMETTL4) in silkworm, a lepidopteran model insect. By using CRISPR-Cas9 system, we somatically mutated BmMETTL4 in silkworm individuates and found that disruption of BmMETTL4 caused the developmental defect of late silkworm embryo and subsequent lethality. We performed RNA-Seq and identified that there were 3192 differentially expressed genes in BmMETTL4 mutant including 1743 up-regulated and 1449 down-regulated. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses showed that genes involved in molecular structure, chitin binding, and serine hydrolase activity were significantly affected by BmMETTL4 mutation. We further found that the expression of cuticular protein genes and collagens were clearly decreased while collagenases were highly increased, which had great contributions to the abnormal embryo and decreased hatchability of silkworm. Taken together, these results demonstrated a critical role of 6mA methyltransferase BmMETTL4 in regulating embryonic development of silkworm.

The preparation of the wavelength-scale micropores on metallic surfaces is limited by the high opacity of metal. At present, most micropores reported in the literature are more than 20 µm in diameter, which is not only large in size, but renders them inefficient for processing so that it is difficult to meet the needs of some special fields, such as aerospace, biotechnology, and so on. In this paper, the rapid laser fabrications of the wavelength-scale micropores on various metallic surfaces are achieved through femtosecond MHz burst Bessel beam ablation. Taking advantage of the long-depth focal field of the Bessel beam, high-density micropores with a diameter of 1.3 µm and a depth of 10.5 µm are prepared on metal by MHz burst accumulation; in addition, the rapid fabrication of 2000 micropores can be achieved in 1 s. The guidelines and experimental results illustrate that the formations of the wavelength-scale porous structures are the result of the co-action of the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) effect and Bessel beam interference. Porous metal can be used to store lubricant and form a lubricating layer on the metallic surface, thus endowing the metal resistance to various liquids’ adhesion. The microporous formation process on metal provides a new physical insight for the rapid preparation of wavelength-scale metallic micropores, and promotes the application of porous metal in the fields of catalysis, gas adsorption, structural templates, and bio-transportation fields.

Ovarian cancer is currently the most lethal gynecological cancer. At present, primary debulking surgery combined with platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment strategy for ovarian cancer. Although cisplatin-based chemotherapy has greatly improved the prognosis of patients, the subsequent primary or acquired drug resistance of cancer cells has become an obstacle to a favorable prognosis. Mortalin is a chaperone that plays an important role in multiple cellular and biological processes. Our previous studies have found that mortalin is associated with the proliferation and migration of ovarian cancer cells and their resistance to cisplatin-based chemotherapy. In this study, microRNA (miR)-200b/c downregulated mortalin expression and inhibited the proliferation and migration of the paired cisplatin-sensitive (A2780S) and cisplatin-resistant (A2780CP) epithelial ovarian cancer cell lines. Moreover, miR-200c increased the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin treatment by regulating mortalin levels. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB directly regulated mortalin and miR-200b/c expression levels, while NF-κB and miR-200b/c jointly regulated the expression of mortalin. The combination of cisplatin and miR-200c significantly enhanced the therapeutic effects on ovarian cancer in vivo, suggesting that miR-200c may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for ovarian cancer.

Amplicon sequencing of bacterial or fungal marker sequences is currently the main method for the study of endophytic microorganisms in plants. However, it cannot obtain all types of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc., in samples, nor compare the relative content between endophytic microorganisms and plants and between different types of endophytes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a better analysis strategy for endophytic microorganism investigation. In this study, a new analysis strategy was developed to obtain endophytic microbiome information from plant transcriptome data. Results showed that the new strategy can obtain the composition of microbial communities and the relative content between plants and endophytic microorganisms, and between different types of endophytic microorganisms from the plant transcriptome data. Compared with the amplicon sequencing method, more endophytic microorganisms and relative content information can be obtained with the new strategy, which can greatly broaden the research scope and save the experimental cost. Furthermore, the advantages and effectiveness of the new strategy were verified with different analysis of the microbial composition, correlation analysis, inoculant content test, and repeatability test.

Raman spectroscopy is a well-established and powerful tool for in situ biomolecular evaluation. Type 2 crystal nephropathies are characterized by the deposition of crystalline materials in the tubular lumen, resulting in rapid onset of acute kidney injury without specific symptoms. Timely crystal identification is essential for its diagnosis, mechanism exploration and therapy, but remains challenging. This study aims to develop a Raman spectroscopy-based method to assist pathological diagnosis of type 2 crystal nephropathies. Unknown crystals in renal tissue slides from a victim suffered extensive burn injury were detected by Raman spectroscopy, and the inclusion of crystals was determined by comparing Raman data with established database. Multiple crystals were scanned to verify the reproducibility of crystal in situ. Raman data of 20 random crystals were obtained, and the distribution and uniformity of substances in crystals were investigated by Raman imaging. A mouse model was established to mimic the crystal nephropathy to verify the availability of Raman spectroscopy in frozen biopsy. All crystals on the human slides were identified to be calcium oxalate dihydrate, and the distribution and content of calcium oxalate dihydrate on a single crystal were uneven. Raman spectroscopy was further validated to be available in identification of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals in the biopsy specimens. Here, a Raman spectroscopy-based method for in situ identification of unknown crystals in both paraffin-embedded tissues and biopsy specimens was established, providing an effective and promising method to analyze unknown crystals in tissues and assist the precise pathological diagnosis in both clinical and forensic medicine.

Hollow carbon nanocapsules have been attracting growing interest due to their fascinating characteristics and extensive potential applications. In this work, a novel natural halloysite-templated synthesis approach for highly graphitic boron-doped hollow carbon nanocapsule webs (B-HCNCWs) using glucose as the carbon source and boric acid as the heteroatom dopant was first reported. The formation process and physicochemical properties of B-HCNCWs were revealed by SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and XPS characterization techniques. The outcomes showed that the as-obtained B-HCNCWs with hollow nanocapsule network architecture had a specific surface area of 263 m2 g−1, a pore volume of 0.8 cm3 g−1, a high degree of graphitization (81.4%), graphite-like interplanar spacing (0.3370 nm), and B-containing functional groups (0.77 at%). The density function theory (DFT) calculation demonstrated that the adsorption energies of Li on B-HCNCWs were much higher than that of HCNCWs, which proved that B-doping in a carbon matrix could increase the lithium intercalation capacity.

Hollow transition metal oxides have important applications in the degradation of organic pollutants by a photo-Fenton-like process. Herein, uniform, highly dispersible hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres (denoted as CFO/C-PNSs) were prepared by a one-pot approach. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images verified that the CFO/C-PNS catalyst mainly presents hollow nanosphere morphology with a diameter of 250 ± 30 nm. Surprisingly, the photodegradation test results revealed that CFO/C-PNSs had an excellent photocatalytic performance in the elimination of various organic contaminants under visible light through the efficient Fenton catalytic process. Due to the unique hollow structure formed by the assembly of ultra-small CFO/C subunits, the catalyst exposes more reaction sites, improving its photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the resulting magnetically separable CFO/C-PNSs exhibited excellent stability. Finally, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of the CFO/C-PNSs was proposed, which enables us to have a clearer understanding of the photo-Fenton mechanism. Through a series of characterization and analysis of degradation behavior of CFO/C-PNS samples over antibiotic degradation and Cr(VI) reduction, •OH radicals generated from H2O2 decomposition played an essential role in enhancing the reaction efficiency. The present work offered a convenient method to fabricate hollow transition metal oxides, which provided impetus for further development in environmental and energy applications. Highlights: Novel hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres were prepared by a facile and cost-effective method. CuFe2O4/C exhibited excellent photo-Fenton-like performance for antibiotic degradation. Outstanding photocatalytic performance was attributed to the specific hollow cavity-porous structure. A possible mechanism for H2O2 activation over hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres was detailed and discussed.

Drought-induced 19 (Di19) proteins play important roles in abiotic stress responses. Thus far, there are no reports about Di19 family in woody plants. Here, eight Di19 genes were identified in poplar. We analyzed phylogenetic tree, conserved protein domain, and gene structure of Di19 gene members in seven species. The results showed the Di19 gene family was very conservative in both dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous forms. On the basis of transcriptome data, the expression patterns of Di19s in poplar under abiotic stress and ABA treatment were further studied. Subsequently, homologous genes PtDi19-2 and PtDi19-7 with strong response to drought stress were identified. PtDi19-2 functions as a nuclear transcriptional activator with a transactivation domain at the C-terminus. PtDi19-7 is a nuclear and membrane localization protein. Additionally, PtDi19-2 and PtDi19-7 were able to interact with each other in yeast two-hybrid system. Overexpression of PtDi19-2 and PtDi19-7 in Arabidopsis was found. Phenotype identification and physiological parameter analysis showed that transgenic Arabidopsis increased ABA sensitivity and drought tolerance. PtDi19-7 was overexpressed in hybrid poplar 84K (Populus alba × Populus glandulosa). Under drought treatment, the phenotype and physiological parameters of transgenic poplar were consistent with those of transgenic Arabidopsis. In addition, exogenous ABA treatment induced lateral bud dormancy of transgenic poplar and stomatal closure of transgenic Arabidopsis. The expression of ABA/drought-related marker genes was upregulated under drought treatment. These results indicated that PtDi19-2 and PtDi19-7 might play a similar role in improving the drought tolerance of transgenic plants through ABA-dependent signaling pathways.

A facile and ingenious method to chemical etching-coordinating a metal-organic framework (MOF) followed by an annealing treatment was proposed to prepare Co3O4 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in rational porous carbon nano-boxes (Co3O4@CNBs), which was further used to detect H2O2 released from living cells. The Co3O4@CNBs H2O2 sensor delivers much higher sensitivity than non-etching/coordinating Co3O4, offering a limit of detection of 2.32 nM. The wide working range covers 10 nM-359 μM H2O2, while possessing good selectivity and excellent reproducibility. Moreover, this biosensor was used to successfully real-time detect H2O2 released from living cells, including both healthy and tumor cells. The excellent performance holds great promise for Co3O4@CNBs’s applications in electrochemical biomimetic sensing, particularly real-time monitor H2O2 released from living cells.

Microlens arrays (MLAs) and MLA-based artificial compound eyes (ACEs) are the important miniaturized optical components in modern micro-optical systems. However, their optical performance will seriously decline once they are wetted by water droplets (such as fog, dew, and rain droplets) or are polluted by contaminations in a humid environment. In this mini-review, we summarize the research works related to the fabrication of superwetting MLAs and ACEs and show how to integrate superhydrophobic and superoleophobic microstructures with an MLA. The fabrication strategy can be split into two categories. One is the hybrid pattern composed of the MLA domain and the superwetting domain. Another is the direct formation of superwetting nanostructures on the surface of the microlenses. The superhydrophobicity or superoleophobicity endows the MLAs and ACEs with liquid repellence and self-cleaning function besides excellent optical performance. We believe that the superwetting MLAs and ACEs will have significant applications in various optical systems that are often used in the humid or liquid environment.

Superwetting surfaces have received increasing attention because of their rich practical applications. Although various superwettabilities are independently achieved, the relationship between those superwettabilities is still not well-clarified. In this mini-review, we show that superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophilicity, underwater superaerophilicity, superhydrophobicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and underwater superaerophobicity can be obtained on a same structured surface by the combination of hierarchical surface microstructures and proper chemistry. The relationship and interconversion between the above-mentioned different superwettabilities are also well-discussed. We believe that the current discussion and clarification of the relationship and interconversion between different superwettabilities has important significance in the design, fabrication, and applications of various superwetting materials.

The achievement of high-efficiency oil/water separation has huge implications for protecting environment and reducing economic losses, but there is still a great challenge. Currently, most artificial oil/water separating materials are fabricated through complex preparation process, resulting in the very high cost of separation. In this paper, we present a simple and low-cost method to achieve oil/water separation by using the underwater superoleophobic materials that already exist in our life or nature. Taking filter paper and zeolite layer as examples, we show the inherent porous microstructures of these materials. Such porous microstructures endow filter paper and zeolite layer with strong ability to absorb water and the underwater superoleophobicity. Based on the porous feature and underwater superoleophobicity, the pre-wetted filter paper and zeolite layer can be used to effectively separate the mixture of water and oil, with great separation capacity. The existing materials (e.g., filter paper and zeolite layer) with both porous microstructure and underwater superoleophobicity in our life or nature are green and low-cost, and can be easily obtained. Such advantages allow those materials to potentially solve the pollution problems caused by the discharge of industrial oily wastewater and the oil-spill accidents.

Human beings are facing severe global environmental problems and sustainable development problems. Effective separation technology plays an essential role in solving these challenges. In the past decades, superwettability (e.g., superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity) has succeeded in achieving oil/water separation. The mixture of oil and water is just the tip of the iceberg of the mixtures that need to be separated, so the wettability-based separation strategy should be extended to treat other kinds of liquid/liquid or liquid/gas mixtures. This review aims at generalizing the approach of the well-developed oil/water separation to separate various multiphase mixtures based on the surface superwettability. Superhydrophobic and even superoleophobic surface microstructures have liquid-repellent properties, making different liquids keep away from them. Inspired by the process of oil/water separation, liquid polymers can be separated from water by using underwater superpolymphobic materials. Meanwhile, the underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic porous materials are successfully used to collect or remove gas bubbles in a liquid, thus achieving liquid/gas separation. We believe that the diversified wettability-based separation methods can be potentially applied in industrial manufacture, energy use, environmental protection, agricultural production, and so on.

A gelatin@non-woven fabric (gelatin@NWF) hybrid scaffold with tailored micropore structures was fabricated by lyophilizing, using gelatin to support cells and the NWF matrix as a frame to enforce the mechanical stability of gelatin. By freezing the gelatin and NWF hybrid in liquid nitrogen and subsequently lyophilizing and crosslinking the process, the gelatin@NWF scaffold was prepared to support cell growth and promote cell aggregation and spheroids’ formation. The results indicated that by tuning the lyophilizing temperature, the micropore size on the gelatin could be tailored. Consequently, tumor spheroids can be formed on gelatin@NWF scaffolds with honeycomb-like pores around 10 µm. The cell spheroids formed on the tailored gelatin@NWF scaffold were characterized in cancer stem cell (CSC)-associated gene expression, chemotherapy drug sensitivity, and motility. It was found that the expression of the CSC-associated biomarkers SOX2, OCT4, and ALDH1A1 in gene and protein levels in DU 145 cell spheres formed on gelatin@NWF scaffolds were significantly higher than in those cells grown as monolayers. Moreover, cells isolated from spheroids grown on gelatin@NWF scaffold showed higher drug resistance and motility. Tumor spheroids can be formed on a long-term storage scaffold, highlighting the potential of gelatin@NWF as a ready-to-use scaffold for tumor cell sphere generation and culturing.

Nano-structures have significant applications in many fields such as chip fabrications, nanorobotics, and solar cells. However, realizing nanoscale structures on hard and brittle materials is still challenging. In this paper, when processing the silica surface with a tightly focused Bessel beam, the smallest nanohole with ~20 nm diameter has been realized by precisely controlling the interior and superficial interaction of the silica material. An effective surface window assisted nano-drilling (SWAN) mechanism is proposed to explain the generation of such a deep subwavelength structure, which is supported by the simulation results of energy depositions.

Defect-induced phenomena in 2D materials has received increasing interest among researchers due to the novel properties correlated with precise modification of materials. We performed a study of the nonlinear saturable absorption of the boron-atom-vacancy defective hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin film at a wavelength of ~1 μm and its applications in ultrafast laser generation. The h-BN is with wide band gap of ~6 eV. Our investigation shows that the defective h-BN has a wide absorption band from visible to near infrared regimes. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) indicate that optical property changes may be attributed to the boron-vacancy-related defects. The photoluminescence spectrum shows a strong emission peak at ~1.79 eV. The ultrafast Z-scan measurement shows saturable absorbance response has been detected for the defective h-BN with saturation intensity of ~1.03 GW/cm2 and modulation depth of 1.1%. In addition, the defective h-BN has been applied as a new saturable absorber (SA) to generate laser pulses through the passively Q-switched mode-locking configuration. Based on a Nd:YAG waveguide platform, 8.7 GHz repetition rate and 55 ps pulse duration of the waveguide laser have been achieved. Our results suggest potential applications of defective h-BN for ultrafast lasing and integrated photonics.

In this work, the azoxystrobin removal in water by using a micro-size discharge array was investigated, and the removal efficiency can reach as high as 98.1% after 9 min plasma treatment as well as the energy utilization being only 0.73 g/(kW·h). Based on the relationship between the generation of gas bubbles and parameters of gas-liquid discharge, it was found that the variation of applied voltage, gas flow rate and initial solution temperature could cause particle number change, mass transfer rate change and the mass transfer time change, which significantly affected the practical applications at last. The experimental results indicated that when gas flow rate was 0.7 SLM (Standard Liter per Minute) and the initial solution temperature was 297 K with the applied voltage of 8 kV and discharge frequency of 6 kHz, the removal efficiency of azoxystrobin achieved maximum. Based on the analysis results of liquid mass spectrometry, the removal pathways of azoxystrobin were supposed by the decomposed by-products. Toxicity tests indicated that the decomposed products were safe and non-toxic. So, this study may reveal an azoxystrobin degradation mechanism and provide a safe, reliable and effective way for azoxystrobin degradation.

Heteroatom-doped carbon is widely used in the fields of adsorbents, electrode materials and catalysts due to its excellent physicochemical properties. N and S co-doped porous carbon spheres (N,S-PCSs) were synthesized using glucose and L-cysteine as carbon and heteroatom sources using a combined hydrothermal and KOH activation process. The physicochemical structures and single-factor methylene blue (MB) adsorption properties of the N,S-PCSs were then studied. The optimized N,S-PCSs-1 possessed a perfect spherical morphology with a 2–8-μm diameter and a large specific area of 1769.41 m2 g−1, in which the N and S contents were 2.97 at% and 0.88 at%, respectively. In the single-factor adsorption experiment for MB, the MB adsorption rate increased with an increase in carbon dosage and MB initial concentration, and the adsorption reached equilibrium within 2–3 h. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could excellently fit the experimental data with a high R2 (0.9999). The Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation fitted well with the experimental results with an R2 value of 0.9618, and the MB maximum adsorption quantity was 909.10 mg g−1. The adsorption of MB by N,S-PCSs-1 was a spontaneous, endothermic, and random process based on the thermodynamics analyses. The adsorption mechanism mainly involved Van der Waals force adsorption, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonds and Lewis acid–base interactions.
