A novel, inexpensive, and sensitive microanalytical system for the determination of total ammonia-nitrogen (ammonia-N) in water was developed. The system was designed to detect ammonia using an in-line purging system coupled with a newly designed gas converging flow cell incorporating in-line paper-based colorimetric detection. The gas converging flow cell served as a gas chamber, a paper-based device holder, and a color detection cell. The paper-based device was impregnated with butterfly pea extract (a natural acid-base indicator), the color of which changed on the basis of the generated ammonia gas. Analytical parameters such as concentration of natural indicator and purging time were studied and optimized. The color image could be captured by an integrated endoscope camera or smartphone and analyzed by ImageJ software in RGB mode. Under optimal conditions, two linear dynamic ranges were observed. By using 1:2 (v/v) diluted 2% (w/v) butterfly pea extract in Milli-Q water, a low linear concentration range of 0.05–0.9 mg L−1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 mg L−1 and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.05 mg L−1 was achieved. By using a non-diluted 2% (w/v) butterfly pea extract, a high linear concentration range of 0.5–4 mg L−1 with an LOD of 0.1 mg L−1 and LOQ of 0.3 mg L−1 was obtained. Finally, the optimized method was leveraged to determine ammonia-N in various water samples from shrimp farming.

Objectives: This study aims to determine the temporal stability of Schistosoma mansoni circulating cathodic antigens (CCA) in filter paper-based dried urine spot (FP-DUS) samples under varying temperatures condition. Methods: Urine from 20 children confirmed to have S. mansoni infection using Kato-Katz (at least 1 egg per gram of stool) and Schisto POC-CCA (2+ and 3+) methods were stored in form of FP-DUS and urine at room temperature (RT), 4 °C and −20 °C. Standard urine and FP-DUS Schisto POC-CCA methods were employed to detect CCA in urine and FP-DUS samples respectively, at weeks 4, 8 and 12. The results were reported as negative or positive (trace, 1+. 2+, and 3+). Results: In FP-DUS samples, POC-CCA scores initially increase after 4–8 weeks, but then showed a decrease in intensity while still remaining positive, independent of temperature condition. From week 4 to week 12, at least 80 % of urine samples had POC-CCA score of 3+, independent of temperature condition. However, 2 urine samples at RT tested negative at weeks 8 and 12. Conclusions: Despite the decrease in the intensity of test line in many samples, S. mansoni CCA remains stable and detectable in urine samples stored in FP-DUS.

In the modern day, explosive detection is essential to public safety, and fluorescent small molecules have gained popularity for their quick and accurate detection. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of a series of pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxaline-based conjugated small organic fluorophores (PQ-Ph-OH, PQ-Ph-NMe, PQ-Ph-OMe, PQ-Ph-Me, and PQ-Ph-CN) as fluorescence-based sensors for explosive molecules. The sensor molecules were synthesized in good to excellent yields using a dehomologative functionalization strategy. They exhibited excellent photophysical characteristics, which was tunable based on the substituent on the phenyl linker at position 3. DFT studies showed that the pyrroloquinoxaline moiety could act as an on-demand electron donor or acceptor, depending on the phenyl substituent. The molecules also exhibited solid state emission due to twisted geometry around the CC single bond between the heterocyclic scaffold and the phenyl derivative. This resulted in low band intense emission for the synthesized molecules. In the presence of electron-deficient nitroaromatic explosives, all the fluorophores showed excellent fluorescence quenching. Detection limits in the range of 10−4 M were obtained for all the fluorophores. Stern-Volmer plots show high values of binding constants, indicating good interaction between the fluorophores and the explosive molecules. The mechanism of sensing was confirmed by UV-PL spectral overlap and fluorescence lifetime measurements, which suggest a static quenching based on the formation of a ground state complex. Owing to solid state emissions in some of the derivatives, the synthesized molecules were applied to paper strips for spot detection of explosive molecules.

Flexible paper-based force sensors have garnered significant attention for their important potential applications in healthcare wearables, portable electronics, etc. However, most studies have only used paper as the flexible substrate for sensors, not fully exploiting the potential of paper’s micro-nanostructure for sensing. This article proposes a novel approach where paper serves both as the sensitive element and the flexible substrate of force sensors. Under external mechanical forces, the micro-nanostructure of the conductive-treated paper will change, leading to significant changes in the related electrical output and thus enabling sensing. To demonstrate the feasibility and universality of this new method, the article takes paper-based capacitive pressure sensors and paper-based resistive strain sensors as examples, detailing their fabrication processes, constructing sensing principle models based on the micro-nanostructure of paper materials, and testing their main sensing performance. For the capacitive paper-based pressure sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 1.623 kPa−1, a fast response time of 240 ms, and a minimum pressure resolution of 4.1 Pa. As for the resistive paper-based strain sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 72 and a fast response time of 300 ms. The proposed new method offers advantages such as high sensitivity, simplicity in the fabrication process, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, providing new insights into the research of flexible force sensors.

We have developed a simple and direct method to fabricate paper-based microfluidic devices that can be used for a wide range of colorimetric assay applications. With these devices, assays can be performed within minutes to allow for quantitative colorimetric analysis by use of a widely accessible iPhone camera and an RGB color reader application (app) to measure color intensity. In the described laboratory experiment, students design and create their own microfluidic devices with common laboratory supplies such as Kimwipes, Parafilm, and a thermal laminator, and gain hands-on experience in the analysis of Fe[superscript 2+] and Cu[superscript 2+] by colorimetric determination.

In this manuscript, a paper-based device modified with metal-organic frameworks was applied for the extraction of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) in oral fluids, taking profit of the several interaction mechanisms between MOF-analytes, followed by their quantification by LC-fluorescence detection. The resulting composite, named as NH2-UiO-66@paper, was characterized by different techniques such as infrared, scanning electron microscopy, among others. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) allows for the fabrication of cost-effective, flexible electrodes on a multitude of recyclable and sustainable substrates, for implementation within electrochemical biosensors. This work expands on current LIG research, by experimentally modeling the effects of several CO2 laser irradiation variables towards resulting conductive and electrochemical properties of paper-derived LIG. Instead of relying on the established paradigm of manipulating power and scan speed of the laser irradiation process for optimized outcomes, modeling of underlying laser operation principles for pulse modulation, regarding pulse repetition frequencies, pulse duration and defocus are presented as the key aspects dominating graphitization processes of materials. This approach shows that graphitization is dominated by appropriate pulse durations, dictating the time the substrate is exposed to each laser pulse, with laser fluence and irradiation defocus influencing the resulting conductive properties, with sheet resistances as low as 14 Ω sq−1. Similarly, fabrication settings controlled by these parameters have a direct influence on the properties of LIG-based electrochemical three-electrode cells, with optimized fabrication settings reaching electrochemically active surface area as high as 35 mm2 and heterogeneous electron transfer rates of 3.4 × 10−3 cm.s−1. As a proof-of-concept, the production of environmentally friendly, accessible, and biocompatible pH sensors is demonstrated, using two modification approaches, employing riboflavin and polyaniline as pH-sensitive elements.

This article provides answers to the question of how Generation Z perceives various quality characteristics in connection with paper straws. The aim of this study was to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of paper straws from three perspectives: intrinsic quality characteristics, sensory perception, and physical characteristics. A total of 215 young adults and 65 students aged up to 27 years took part in the field study and sensory analysis, respectively. The field survey revealed that Serbian Gen Z prefers and expects paper straws do not contribute to the flavor of the drink, have a rounded and dull edge, and not change their shape when dipped into the drink. The sensory panel was formed by selecting students based on the results of several sensory screening tests conducted in the initial phase. Sensory testing for the difference showed that the impact of paper straws of different diameters on flavor was limited, although it was confirmed that artificial saliva could easily coat the surfaces and penetrate the layers of the paper straws, resulting in a significant loss of firmness and a greater potential to adhere to the lips. No effects were found on the sweetness, sourness, pungency, and overall flavor of the soft drink. Viscosity was the only attribute that was affected. The soft drink was perceived as more viscous when using the narrower straw than when using the larger diameter straws. Artificial saliva and water were the liquids that had the greatest influence on the loss of firmness of the soaked straws. After 20 min of exposure to most of the liquids tested, the paper straws were found to lose over 75% of their firmness. Paper straws are more sustainable and have the potential to completely replace plastic straws. However, their physical properties, especially firmness, need to be further improved, considering that they can be soaked in liquids for more than 20 min when consuming various beverages.

Invasive alien plant species (IAPS) may cause threats to native biodiversity in ecosystems. Researchers have been investigating all the possible ways that they can be used effectively for other purposes. Since IAPS are capable of forming cellulose fibre nets, in this research, papers were made from three different types of IAPS (Japanese knotweed, giant goldenrod, and black locust). This research examined these IAPS papers and their effectiveness when used as printing substrates. In comparison to commercial office paper, the differences in basic, surface, optical, and microscopic properties were measured. As a widely used technology, inkjet printing was applied. We tested a commonly used sans-serif typeface (which has been established as being more legible than other typefaces in previous research) in three different type sizes (i.e., 8, 10, and 12 pt). According to the results, paper made from IAPS could offer some usable properties and acceptable legibility, especially when printing typefaces with specific attributes, such as moderate counter size, higher x-height, and minimal differences in the letter stroke width, are used. An appropriate typographic tonal density should be achieved in combination with an adequate letter size, e.g., 10 pt type size when a sans-serif typeface is used.

In this article, a low-cost, simple, and rapid fabrication of paper-based analytical devices (PADs) using a wax screen-printing method is reported here. The acid-base reaction is implemented in the simple PADs to demonstrate to students the chemistry concept of a limiting reagent. When a fixed concentration of base reacts with a gradually increasing concentration of acid, a dramatic demonstration allows students to discover the limiting reagent by naked eyes observing the color change from phenolphthalein as an indicator. This demonstration is not only a new approach to enhancing students' learning of the chemistry concept of the limiting reagent, but also presents potential applications of PADs into all levels of chemistry from middle school through college classes.

This review explores circular economy principles in regard to ethanol production from paper-mill sludge. Environmental sustainability and renewability over fossil fuels make second generation ethanol an attractive energy source in a rapidly growing population and consumption world. Paper sludge (PS), a by-product of the pulp and paper (P&P) industry, can no longer be recycled for paper production and is mainly disposed of in landfills. Therefore, it poses a major environmental challenge. However, it has shown potential as a valuable raw material for ethanol production, along with other pulp and paper products, due to its abundant availability and high cellulosic content. This waste-to-energy (WtE) technology for ethanol production is proposed as an alternative, aligning with circular economy concepts to maximize resource efficiency and minimize waste. This review underlines the circular economy aspects of bioethanol production within paper mill sludge management systems. Circular economy principles applied to ethanol production from PS offer a promising avenue for sustainable biofuel development that not only addresses waste management challenges but also enhances the overall environmental performance of biofuel production. Furthermore, economic benefits are described, highlighting the potential for job creation and community development.

Laboratory experiments were developed to introduce students to the quantitation of drugs of abuse by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Undergraduate students were introduced to internal standard quantitation and the LC-MS/MS method optimization for cocaine. Cocaine extracted from paper currency was analyzed with a simple and rapid LC-MS/MS method. Students in advanced laboratories determined the amount of amphetamine, methamphetamine, and oxycodone on currency in addition to cocaine. The LC-MS/MS method has a short run time (2.5 min) to allow for a high throughput of student samples.

Chemistry researchers are frequently evaluated on the perceived significance of their work with the citation count as the most commonly-used metric for gauging this property. Recent studies have called for a broader evaluation of significance that includes more nuanced bibliometrics as well as altmetrics to more completely evaluate scientific research. To better understand the relationship between metrics and peer judgements of significance in chemistry, we have conducted a survey of chemists to investigate their perceptions of previously published research. Focusing on a specific issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society published in 2003, respondents were asked to select which articles they thought best matched importance and significance given several contexts: highest number of citations, most significant (subjectively defined), most likely to share among chemists, and most likely to share with a broader audience. The answers to the survey can be summed up in several observations. The ability of respondents to predict the citation counts of established research is markedly lower than the ability of those counts to be predicted by the h-index of the corresponding author of each article. This observation is conserved even when only considering responses from chemists whose expertise falls within the subdiscipline that best describes the work performed in an article. Respondents view both cited papers and significant papers differently than papers that should be shared with chemists. We conclude from our results that peer judgements of importance and significance differ from metrics-based measurements, and that chemists should work with bibliometricians to develop metrics that better capture the nuance of opinions on the importance of a given piece of research.

In recent years, due to environmental awareness regarding the harmfulness of polymeric materials, there has been a growing interest in using papers, especially those from alternative raw materials. The importance of using all available raw materials is imperative today. Raw materials that were once viewed as waste are now of great importance because they have the ability to replace raw materials that are used irrationally or are lacking. Cereal straw is a lignocellulosic material that could be used in the paper industry and in the production of increasingly prevalent paper packaging. The aim of this research was to analyze the relationships between the qualitative parameters of straw-based printed papers containing 30% agricultural residues (wheat, barley, or triticale). The influence of two qualitative parameters (ink penetration depth and optical ink density) on the print-through was observed using multiple regression analysis on straw-based papers produced at the laboratory level. Throughout the research, 100% recycled wood paper was used as a reference sample. The results of the regression analysis showed that none of the variables individually make a statistically significant contribution to the prediction of the dependent variable in a linear context, that is, they indicate a non-linear interaction between the variables and the specific conditions under which the dependent variable reaches local extremes and changes in the gradient. Considering the results of the regression analysis and the visualization of the relationship, the model was additionally tested with other independent variables (paper type). From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the alternative straw-based paper with 30% barley pulp has the best interaction between ink and paper, which is the most similar to the reference sample in terms of printability, while the alternative straw-based paper with 30% wheat generally differs significantly from the reference paper when all three prints are considered.

Paper is the most abundant and inexpensive polymeric structure of cellulose available. Paper has micro-porous capillary-like networks which are responsible for flow of solvents instead of pumps or electronic power, making paper an ideally usable tool. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices use fabricated paper devices on which hydrophilic zones are formed within hydrophobic barriers. Hydrophilic zones act as regions for actual analytical purposes, whereas hydrophobic zones act to demarcate separate zones from one another. Clinically, these devices have been proved to be excellent point-of-care-devices in diagnosis which can bypass use of costly and time-consuming laboratory techniques. In the presented review, the basic principles and components involved in the design of paper-based devices were then summarised in understandable manner. Further, various applications in different fields were also compiled in the form of text under different sections and tables. Paper-based analytical devices may serve as an excellent tool in variety of analytical works as these techniques are simple, rapid, economic, and require less human power or trainings. They have prominent applications in analysis of biological fluids, drugs/metabolites, food stuffs, colorants, biomarkers, and several other fields.

Paper to Plastics (P2P) is an interdisciplinary program that combines chemistry and biology in a research setting. The goal of this project is 2-fold: to engage students in scientific research and to educate them about sustainability and biodegradable materials. The scientific aim of the project is to recycle unwanted office paper to the useful biodegradable polymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Through this program, students learn firsthand how chemistry and biology interact to form useful materials from waste. Students combine biological techniques, such as enzymatic digestion and fermentation, with chemical techniques, such as distillation and catalysis, to accomplish the conversion of waste paper into PLA. Through this summer program, students ultimately become familiar with diverse laboratory techniques, while learning how their scientific interests can be used to address important social problems.

Paper is an extraordinary example of a composite engineering material with practical use in a huge variety of applications. Since its invention in China, there have been many alterations to manufacturing techniques, component formulation, and surface finishing, yet the essential characteristics of paper have not changed greatly. The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate that the chromatographic performance of paper as a stationary phase may be used to distinguish between externally similar materials. The procedure developed is so simple that even students with little exposure to practical chemistry and limited chemical knowledge can understand the essential content. Because of the ubiquitous nature of paper, it is often recovered from crime scenes as evidence for analysis. However, the variety of sources and the mechanical or chemical properties often make demonstration of unequivocal correlation between "questioned" and "known" or "reference" samples a complex task. Introducing the practical session as a crime scene investigation, and presenting the laboratory exercise as an accessible forensic technique for paper identification, adds an exciting dimension to the practical experience for young people. The authors' application of this strategy has been successfully extended as it has become evident that the experiment motivates a surprisingly wide range of audiences.

A carbonized interlayer effectively helps to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this study, a simple and inexpensive carbon intermediate layer was fabricated using a traditional Korean paper called “hanji”. This carbon interlayer has a fibrous porous structure, with a specific surface area of 91.82 m2 g−1 and a BJH adsorption average pore diameter of 26.63 nm. The prepared carbon interlayer was utilized as an intermediary layer in Li–S batteries to decrease the charge-transfer resistance and capture dissolved lithium polysulfides. The porous fiber-shaped carbon interlayer suppressed the migration of polysulfides produced during the electrochemical process. The carbon interlayer facilitates the adsorption of soluble lithium polysulfides, allowing for their re-utilization in subsequent cycles. Additionally, the carbon interlayer significantly reduces the polarization of the cell. This simple strategy results in a significant improvement in cycle performance. Consequently, the discharge capacity at 0.5 C after 150 cycles was confirmed to have improved by more than twofold, reaching 230 mAh g−1 for cells without the interlayer and 583 mAh g−1 for cells with the interlayer. This study demonstrates a simple method for improving the capacity of Li–S batteries by integrating a functional carbon interlayer.

In recent years, technological development in analytical instrumentation has progressed vigorously, which has allowed the evolution of analytical techniques that play an indispensable role within society, highlighting mass spectrometry. Parallel to the technological advance of this technique, the development of new ionization methods that are simpler, faster, and allow direct analysis without the need for prior treatment or sample processing is underway. The methods of ambient ionization derived from paper spray have been developing rapidly in current days, mainly in the forensic field, due to the chemical modifications made in the paper substrate and the introduction of new types of organic materials that function as a probe/substrate to collect, store, and ionize the sample, then enabling more efficient and selective analyzes. This review highlights direct analyzes by applying paper spray ionization in the forensic field and some variations of this technique, including Thread Spray Ionization (TSI) when a fabric thread is used; Touch Spray Ionization (TSI), which uses materials such as metallic needles, medical swabs, and wooden sticks; Fiber Spray Ionization (FSI), which applies polymeric fibers as substrates.

The advance in the development of augmented reality technologies has attracted interest in their applicability in rescue scenarios. The characteristics of the different missions covered by First Responders, as well as the different objectives they can cover in a rescue operation, condition the importance of the additional information they can receive in these rescue processes through technology. This white paper aims to analyze the difficulties encountered when converging on the design of an interface that is adaptable to the professional and contextual circumstances in a rescue task.

Abstract Miniaturized paper‐based electrochemical sensors were fabricated using kraft paper and CO2 laser, dispensing the need for chemical reagents and controlled atmospheric conditions. This study initially evaluated the paper type and laser processing parameters, enhancing the electrodes′ robustness, electrochemical response, and electrical resistance. The sensors were also treated by applying −1 V for 60 s in 1.0 mol L−1 KCl, which is a simple and rapid procedure. The electrochemical treatment increased the electroactive area and roughness, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. These aspects helped modulate the sensors′ electrochemical response for nitrite determination, improving selectivity and sensitivity for this compound. The sensors also showed repeatability and batch‐to‐batch reproducibility, with 2.2 and 10 % RSD, respectively. Therefore, this work brings a protocol to fabricating competitive electrochemical sensors through a sustainable strategy, opening possibilities for designing new analytical systems.

Here, we propose a printed 96-well microtiter paper-based chemosensor array device (PCSAD) to simultaneously detect metal ions for river water assessment. Colorimetric chemosensors for metal ions have been designed based on molecular self-assembly using off-the-shelf catechol dyes and a phenylboronic acid (PBA) derivative. The colorimetric self-assembled chemosensors consisting of catechol dyes and a PBA derivative on a 96-well microtiter paper substrate demonstrated various color changes according to the disassembly of the ensembles by the addition of nine types of metal ions. An in-house-made algorithm was used to automate imaging analysis and extract color intensities at seven types of color channels from a captured digital image, allowing for rapid data processing. The obtained information-rich inset data showed fingerprint-like colorimetric responses and was applied to the qualitative and quantitative pattern recognition of metal ions using chemometric techniques. The feasibility of the 96-well microtiter PCSAD for environmental assessment has been revealed by the demonstration of a spike-and-recovery test against metal ions in a river water sample.

In recent years, using natural materials to prepare sorbents has been a clear trend in the sample preparation context. This research line is supported by sustainable considerations, as it responds to the tenth principle of Green Analytical Chemistry. Also, the affordability and availability of natural materials open the door to developing global analytical solutions. Among all the available natural materials, cellulose paper presents unique characteristics (porosity, mechanical resistance, and easy chemical/physical modification of the substrate) that can be exploited in analytical extractions. This article reviews the role of paper-based sorptive phases in the current sample preparation realm, putting more emphasis on their potential than on the description of specific applications. The article covers the main synthetic routes described in the literature for preparing these phases and the reported coatings. In contrast with the classical analytical workflow (based on the separated extraction, elution, and analysis steps), the direct combination of sample preparation with instrumental techniques permits further simplification of the analytical procedures. Cellulose paper can operate under both workflows, and the main approaches based on spectroscopic and spectrometric analysis will be discussed. Finally, the combination of both instrumental techniques (using the so-called dual substrates) will be outlined.

Solid-state supercapacitors with areal capacitance in the order of 100 mF⋅cm−2 are developed on paper substrates, using eco-friendly, low-cost materials and a simple technology. The electrochemically active material used as the electrode is prepared from a stable water-based ink, obtained by doping commercial polypyrrole (PPY) powder with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA), and characterized by optical and electrical measurements, Raman investigation and Atomic Force Microscopy. The PPY:DBSA ink can be directly applied on paper by means of rechargeable water pens, obtaining, after drying, electrically conducting solid state tracks. The PPY:DBSA layers are then interfaced to one another through a polymer gel based on potassium hydroxide and chitosan, acting both as the ion-conducting medium and as the separator. The areal capacitance of the devices developed by following such a simple rule can be improved when the PPY:DBSA ink is applied in combination with other nanostructured carbon material.

Lightweight, flexible, and electrically conductive thin films with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness and excellent thermal management capability are ideal for portable and flexible electronic devices. Herein, the asymmetric and multilayered structure Ag-MXene/ANFs composite papers (AMAGM) were fabricated based on Ag-MXene hybrids and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) via a self-reduction and alternating vacuum-assisted filtration process. The resultant AMAGM composite papers exhibit high electrical conductivity of 248,120 S m−1, excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 124.21 MPa and fracture strain of 4.98%, superior EMI shielding effectiveness (62 dB), ultra-high EMI SE/t (11,923 dB cm2 g−1) and outstanding EMI SE reliability as high as 96.1% even after 5000 cycles of bending deformation benefiting from the unique structure and the 3D network at a thickness of 34 μm. Asymmetric structures play an important role in regulating reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the multifunctional nanocomposite papers reveal outstanding thermal management performances such as ultrafast thermal response, high heating temperatures at low operation voltage, and high heating stability. The results indicate that the AMAGM composite papers have excellent potential for high-integration electromagnetic shielding, wearable electronics, artificial intelligence, and high-performance heating devices.

Chemical analysis of atmospheric aerosols by conventional analytical methods is usually required to perform complicated and time-consuming sample preparation processes. In recent decades, ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AI-MS) methods have been proven to be simple, rapid, and effective analytical tools for direct analysis of various complex samples. In this work, we applied porous paper filters for direct adsorptive sampling of tobacco smoke, and then the sampled paper filters were performed the emitters of the paper spray ionization (PSI) device. An auto-sampling device was made to control the generation and collection of tobacco smoke. Nicotine, the typical compound of tobacco smoke, was used to optimize the key conditions of auto-sampling. Moreover, different types of tobacco smoke were also compared with multivariate variable analysis, and the makers of tobacco smoke from different sources of tobacco smoke were investigated. By using this method, direct sampling and analysis of a single tobacco sample can be completed within minutes. Overall, our results show that PSI-MS is a powerful tool that integrates collection, extraction, ionization, and identification analytes in smoke.

Herein we present a modified iodine clock experiment which replaces starch with cellulose paper. This provides the reaction with a white solid surface in which color change can be clearly observed and reduces reagent amounts required to 540 µL per group. After data acquisition, students are required to calculate reaction orders and the reaction constant k, culminating in their ability to discern the rate equation for this reaction. This experiment is ideal for teaching kinetics in high school and undergraduate settings, particularly if liquid waste disposal is not readily available or if high importance is placed upon minimizing their environmental impact.

Inflammable building finishing materials act as a major cause of fire propagation, and they, therefore, pose significant risks to life and can lead to property damage. To replace such flammable building finishing materials, many countries have established regulations limiting their use, which has led to extensive research on the development of flame-retardant building finishing materials. Such methods have included adding flame retardants to construction materials to reduce the heat release rate and total heat release. The present study aimed to enhance the fire performance of cellulose-based architectural finishing materials by creating a dual flame-retardant mixture using expandable graphite and magnesium hydroxide added to recycled paper waste. Specimen fabrication involves using a pressing method to apply uniform pressure to compress the mixture in a mold. The total heat release (THR), CO, and CO2 production of the produced specimens were measured using a cone calorimeter while varying the magnesium hydroxide additive ratio. The combustion gases were measured through NES 713 experiments to determine any changes in the Toxic Index corresponding to variations in the magnesium hydroxide content. The experiment results established a correlation between the magnesium hydroxide additive ratio and the total heat release, as well as the existence of variations in CO and CO2 production for the dual flame-retardant recycled paper material. A database for combustion gases was also obtained. It was confirmed that the fire performance was improved by confirming that the total heat release decreased by 52% from the previous one in the magnesium hydroxide content of 30 g, and it was confirmed that the inflection points of the Toxic Index value due to the change in CO and CO2 gas production occurred in the magnesium hydroxide content of 20 g due to the improvement of the fire performance. Through the ISO 5660-1 experiment data, we have secured data that can be used as foundational information for performance-oriented fire risk assessments, thereby ensuring the fire safety of cellulose materials that are vulnerable to fire.
