The decision for libraries to make print collections available in a digital format has already been made. The question is how to go digital in a way that is practical (e.g., considering funding, staff time) and useful for patrons (both local and remote). Though creating digital versions of paper maps has been standard practice for a decade or more (Allen, 1999), there have been many useful technological advances in recent years such as increased Internet connection speeds and better file compression technology (Peterson, 2001). Given the decrease in technological costs and the increase in technological efficiencies, making paper maps available in a digital format is more feasible than ever before. Due to the nature of cartographic materials, the next step is more challenging--oversized maps are difficult to present in their entirety given the limitation of screen size. The John R. Borchert Map Library at the University of Minnesota is challenged on how to provide access to these digitized items in a way that is useful for their patrons.

In the summer of 2004, Georgia Southern University began a library construction project that was to last 4 years. An important aspect was the installation of an Automated Retrieval System (ARC) to house a substantial portion of the library collections so that more space could be available for students, faculty, and the services to meet their needs. This paper traces the development of the use of the ARC to house collections, with emphasis on how materials were selected for the two phases of the project and how catalogers have adapted to the idea of collections that can only be browsed virtually.

An intriguing new opportunity for research into the nineteenth-century history of print culture, libraries, and local communities is performing full-text analyses on the corpus of books held by a specific library or group of libraries. Creating corpora using books that are known to have been owned by a given library at a given point in time is potentially feasible because digitized records of the books in several hundred nineteenth-century library collections are available in the form of scanned book catalogs: a book or pamphlet listing all of the books available in a particular library. However, there are two potential problems with using those book catalogs to create corpora. First, it is not clear whether most or all of the books that were in these collections have been digitized. Second, the prospect of identifying the digital representations of the books listed in the catalogs is daunting, given the diversity of cataloging practices at the time. This article will report on progress towards developing an automated method to match entries in early nineteenth-century book catalogs with digitized versions of those books, and will also provide estimates of the fractions of the library holdings that have been digitized and made available in the Google Books/HathiTrust corpus. Mounting digital images of art objects on a Web site is only the first step in providing patron access to such materials. Libraries and museums have a responsibility to provide not only high-quality digital reproductions but also high-quality access from an integrated library catalog with controlled vocabulary and consistent access points. While some digital collections may have excellent internal searchability and require no more than collection level cataloging in a library's OPAC, others may demand cataloging of individual components of the collection. A particular collection's significance, its potential audience, the types of access required, as well as factors such as its size and cohesiveness need to be considered before becoming locked into a specific Web design-especially when it is that of another institution. This paper examines several online library catalogs in which records for art objects as well as historical objects and natural history specimens have been merged, with varying degrees of success, and briefly addresses a modest proposal to catalog ceramic objects at the Ohio State University Libraries. The importance of consistent subject access in a merged catalog, regardless of the thesaurus or thesauri used, is stressed. Library consortia and bibliographic utilities may offer an economically appealing alternative for libraries that cannot design and construct their own digital libraries but these external organizations often have limited capability for—or interest in—modifying the design for a particular library and even less interest in cataloging the collections. Libraries, too, must be faulted for simply listing available electronic resources, either alphabetically or in broad subject categories, on a separate portion of their Web page and failing to provide full catalog records in their catalog. Finally, it is emphasized that the current debate over the viability of MARC 21 versus other metadata standards remains largely irrelevant to the importance of continuing to cultivate a monolithic online catalog, maintaining cataloging standards, and not mindlessly developing what amounts to a separate, rudimentary catalog solely for electronic resources. Libraries are seeking the best possible solution for integrating online journals into their collections. While exploring the different methods and technology available, many libraries still strive to fulfill the original "library mission" proposed by Charles Cutter in his Rules for a Dictionary Catalog. Providing comprehensive access to scholarly journals and individual journal articles becomes increasingly difficult with the advent of journal subscription vendors, general and subject-specific databases, and even journal management software and services aimed at helping libraries manage journal changes and the representation of their holdings to patrons in their public catalogs. Although libraries have found it necessary and desirable to acquire a wide range of journal databases and services, many anticipate that advancements in technology and cooperative efforts among the many institutions and interests involved will eventually allow easier and widespread cross-data- base searching for resource discovery and the type of patron access to journal literature that is desired. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a framework for the articulation of relationships between collection-level and item-level metadata as logical inference rules. The framework is intended to allow the systematic generation of relevant propagation rules and to enable the assessment of those rules for particular contexts and the translation of rules into algorithmic processes.Design/methodology/approach The framework was developed using first order predicate logic. Relationships between collection-level and item-level description are expressed as propagation rules – inference rules where the properties of one entity entail conclusions about another entity in virtue of a particular relationship those individuals bear to each other. Propagation rules for reasoning between the collection and item level are grouped together in the framework according to their logical form as determined by the nature of the propagation action and the attributes involved in the rule.Findings The primary findings are the analysis of relationships between collection-level and item-level metadata, and the framework of categories of propagation rules. In order to fully develop the framework, the paper includes an analysis of colloquial metadata records and the collection membership relation that provides a general method for the translation of metadata records into formal knowledge representation languages.Originality/value The method for formalizing metadata records described in the paper represents significant progress in the application of knowledge representation techniques to problems of metadata creation and management, providing a flexible technique for encoding colloquial metadata as a set of statements in first-order logic. Many libraries in the US provide information about their cataloging department homepages as segments of their technical services homepages. However, in case of the Arabian Gulf university libraries, all the library Websites focus on general collections and services available to their patrons and there is a lack of information on various departments within the library. Very few library Websites have information about the cataloging departments. Only the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) library Website provides a separate Website for its Cataloging Operations Division. The study also found that the exploitation of Web-based cataloging resources by catalogers of the KFUPM library has resulted in enhancing the quality and efficiency of cataloging work. The comprehensive collection of prints by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) donated by Sidney T. Fisher to the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library of the University of Toronto ranks alongside the collections in London, Prague and Windsor. Based on the extensive unpublished correspondence between Sidney Fisher and Richard Pennington preserved in Toronto, this article describes the formation of Fisher's Hollar collection and Pennington's work towards 'A Descriptive Catalogue of the Etched Work of Wenceslaus Hollar, 1607–1677' (Cambridge, 1982). The term aggregate was first used in the context of bibliography in the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) published in 1998. At that time, the precise definition of aggregate had not yet been defined. The breakthrough was achieved by the Working Group on Aggregates set up by IFLA. In its 2011 final report, the Working Group defined the definition of aggregate and the main types of aggregate. These definitions have been adopted in the IFLA Library Reference Model. As aggregates are a relatively common record type in catalogues, the aim of this paper is to summarise what an aggregate is, what types of aggregates are distinguished and how to model these type. This paper looked at the current global paradigms in cataloguing and the significance and difficulties for library adoption in developing countries like Nigeria. The paper employed a four-sturdy approach to explore the subject. The first approach to the paper put forward the concept of library in the 21st century. The second approach focused on the dimension of information and communication technology in cataloging and the latest modern cataloging practices. The third approach compared cataloging practices in advanced countries with Nigeria, while the last approach expatiated the significances, problems, and methods for libraries in Nigeria to espouse. Linked Open Data (LOD) is a core Semantic Web technology that makes knowledge and information spaces of different knowledge domains manageable, reusable, shareable, exchangeable, and interoperable. The LOD approach achieves this through the provision of services for describing, indexing, organizing, and retrieving knowledge artifacts and making them available for quick consumption and publication. This is also aligned with the role and objective of traditional library cataloging. Owing to this link, major libraries of the world are transferring their bibliographic metadata to the LOD landscape. Some developments in this direction include the replacement of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd Edition by the Resource Description and Access (RDA) and the trend towards the wider adoption of BIBFRAME 2.0. An interesting and related development in this respect are the discussions among knowledge resources managers and library community on the possibility of enriching bibliographic metadata with socially curated or user-generated content. The popularity of Linked Open Data and its benefit to librarians and knowledge management professionals warrant a comprehensive survey of the subject. Although several reviews and survey articles on the application of Linked Data principles to cataloging have appeared in literature, a generic yet holistic review of the current state of Linked and Open Data in cataloging is missing. To fill the gap, the authors have collected recent literature (2014-18) on the current state of Linked Open Data in cataloging to identify research trends, challenges, and opportunities in this area and, in addition, to understand the potential of socially curated metadata in cataloging mainly in the realm of the Web of Data. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this review article is the first of its kind that holistically treats the subject of cataloging in the Linked and Open Data environment. Some of the findings of the review are: Linked and Open Data is becoming the mainstream trend in library cataloging especially in the major libraries and research projects of the world; with the emergence of Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), the bibliographic metadata is becoming more meaningful and reusable; and, finally, enriching bibliographic metadata with user-generated content is gaining momentum. Conclusions drawn from the study include the need for a focus on the quality of catalogued knowledge and the reduction of the barriers to the publication and consumption of such knowledge, and the attention on the part of library community to the learning from the successful adoption of LOD in other application domains and contributing collaboratively to the global scale activity of cataloging. This quantitative longitudinal study cross-analyzes a shared print repository's periodical supplement records against physical copies to determine the accuracy of bibliographic representation for bound supplements. The authors relate the study's findings to collection managers and library administrators by highlighting prominent issues discovered, and by discussing the challenges this descriptive disconnect may present for shared repositories, as well as any library collection containing periodical supplements. By requesting that participating libraries provide catalog records for materials set to be submitted, the shared print repository central to this study was well positioned to access and analyze large samples of records and materials from an assortment of independent library collections. It was discovered that many periodical supplement records failed to fully represent actual supplement content held, particularly when involving supplements that were bound together with serial volumes. As a result, the authors pose that if relying only on standard supplement cataloging requirements to represent periodical supplement holdings, it may be particularly difficult for those overseeing collection management to know exactly what supplement content is held and bound within or apart from the affiliated parent resource materials. In turn, this issue may result in libraries inadvertently mislaying or discarding valuable supplement content, particularly when supplement information is not recorded and cataloged at the item level. This article addresses the challenge to make printed hidden collections known quickly without sacrificing ultimate quality. It takes as its starting point the archival mantra 'More product, less process' and explores its application to printed books, mindful of projects in the United States to catalogue 19th- and 20th-century printed books quickly and cheaply with the help of OCLC. A problem is lack of time or managerial inclination ever to return to 'quick and dirty' imports. This article is a case study concerning a collection of 18th-century English imprints, the Graveley Parish Library, at Senate House Library, University of London. Faced with the need to provide metadata as quickly as possible for digitisation purposes, Senate House Library decided, in contrast to its normal treatment of early printed books, to download records from the English Short Title Catalogue and amend them only very minimally before releasing them for public view, and to do this work from catalogue cards rather than the books themselves. The article describes the Graveley Parish collection, the project method's rationale, and the advantages and disadvantages of sourcing the English Short Title Catalogue for metadata. It discusses the drawbacks of retrospective conversion (cataloguing from cards, not books): insufficient detail in some cases to identify the relevant book, and ignorance of the copy-specific elements of books which can constitute the main research interest. The method is compared against cataloguing similar books from photocopies of title pages, and retrospective conversion using English Short Title Catalogue is compared against retrospective conversion of early printed Continental books from cards using Library Hub Discover or OCLC. The control groups show our method's effectiveness. The project succeeded by producing records fast that fulfilled their immediate purpose and simultaneously would obviously require revisiting. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Special Collections and Archives has a collection of over three thousand oral history interviews. Previous cataloging procedures provided limited discoverability to these interviews that prioritized access to physical transcripts. New workflows established for the management and description of archival collections provided the opportunity to revisit cataloging practices for oral history interviews. This article discusses local considerations, challenges, and workflows involved in access and discoverability of individual oral history interviews in a variety of physical formats, using exported metadata from ArchivesSpace to create the basis of an original MARC record in OCLC's WorldCat. The COVID-19 pandemic had a near-immediate impact on libraries worldwide. The majority of the world's libraries shifted their work to online environments, and while this pivot was difficult for all libraries, technical services units were disproportionately impacted given the inherent physical nature of the tasks undertaken by these library units. Research on the impact of COVID-19 and libraries is still developing, but already, technical services units and tasks are being left behind. This literature review explores the early days of COVID-19 guidance for technical services units, tasks, and workers, as well as the lasting impact of COVID-19 on technical work. A new historical research library was opened in autumn 2007 on the third floor of the Central Library of the Corvinus University of Budapest. The Library, founded as the library of the University of Economics of Budapest in 1948 had several legal predecessors: the Library of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Budapest (1850), the Library of the Department of Economics of the Hungarian Royal University (1925), and the Library of the Department of Economics of the University of Technical and Economic Sciences (1934). The current re- search library holds and makes available the historical items of the book collections of the above mentioned libraries, and also holds the original furniture and artefacts of these libraries. The most prestigious collection is the Chamber Library, founded in 1850. Between 1900 and 1904, under the direction of Ervin Szabó, the collection was developed into a high quality re- search library well ahead of its time. Its collection was opened to the wide public in 1901. The historical volumes were re- catalogued in 2006 in the framework of the Hungarian National Shared Catalogue project. The online cataloguing made it possible to access the owner stamps, ex libris and possessor labels of the historical books, which is a very important step made in the reconstruction of the history of the library collection. To help users find their way around the large number of titles available, public libraries organize the collection by placing titles on shelves by genre, by adding classification codes in their online catalogs, and by pictograms on book covers. However, users may have different perceptions of how titles are to be grouped in genres or categories. Public library collections will be more accessible when the way their collection is organized matches these users' perceptions. The authors show how user perceptions can be derived from library loan transaction data. To overcome the particular methodological issues in using such data, a method of ultrametric frees and latent class analysis is developed to determine segments of users and how they categorize the collection. During the past year, there has been a global reckoning with systemic racism, misogyny, transphobia, and xenophobia. As institutions look inward at the ways they can dismantle ongoing systems of oppression, academia must also look at how it codifies these ideologies through Eurocentric canons. Art history is one such field. However, as a highly interdisciplinary subject, it presents a unique foundation on which to restructure these frameworks. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier most often associated with popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. The scope of ISSN, however, includes many types of grey literature. This article will discuss and provide examples of the types of grey literature in scope for ISSN and describe the bibliographic metadata about these resources created to support each ISSN assignment. Benefits to the originators of grey literature that result from ISSN assignments are highlighted, especially the valuable exposure that the resources gain from the bibliographic records that are created to document ISSN assignments and are included in multiple international databases. Purpose: The imperative role of cataloguing in libraries as the bedrock of information/knowledge organization, the need to manage and retain knowledge for strategic planning and better knowledge management (KM) frameworks, little or no information sharing in cataloguing units in federal university libraries in Nigeria, gave rise to this study. The purpose of this study is to identify knowledge sharing (KS) norms and factors that challenge KS practices among cataloguers to provide positive perspective and approach to KS in cataloguing sections of university libraries and improve KM frameworks for better service delivery. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a qualitative survey design, this study examined KS norms, practices and challenges of cataloguers in five university libraries in south-west Nigeria. Data were collected through an open interview to gather in-depth information from 45 cataloguers. Given the small number of the cataloguing team in each library, an enlisting of all cataloguers (census survey) was pertinent for the study. Data collected were analyzed thematically, interviews transcribed and similar responses grouped to provide answers to research questions. Findings: This study revealed KS norms to be somewhat inconsistent and informal than formal, though participants identified the crucial need for KS in their departments. Factors identified as challenges to KS: mood and pressure from work, participants seeing KS as a waste of time, the "know-it-all" attitude, tribal differences, lack of financial motivation, no formal training and mentoring programme, willingness to learn and copy cataloguing. Originality/value: This study not only improves the dearth of literature on the issue of KS among cataloguers in Nigerian university libraries; but also provides definite perspective and approach to KS in university libraries' cataloguing section to improve KM frameworks for better service delivery. This article describes how the Southern Illinois University Medical Library employed ArchivesSpace to create a searchable, online presence for part of its existing physical archive collection. ArchivesSpace is an open-source web based archival management system. The Medical Library, with cooperation from the IT department, used our institutional servers to store data, but users may also pay for third-party hosting. As this paper demonstrates, ArchivesSpace is inexpensive and relatively simple to set up and use and may be a good option for hospital libraries or other smaller libraries that are interested in online archival management tools. This paper's review of current issues in shared print retention and preservation identifies such shared issues as the cataloging and validation, retention and withdrawal of holdings, loss rates, current condition of holdings, recommendations for the number of copies to retain, and storage environments. Library institutions require a communitywide dialogue assessing practical retention concerns. We hope that our recommendations and discussion will serve as a call to action for further study and greater interest in strong cooperation at both institutional and repository levels, including collaborative action for multiple levels of collection assessments. Sound files offer the advantage of access to a large volume of data and speech features that cannot be captured on paper. Sound recordings can preserve a diasporic dialect on the verge of extinction. Cataloging sound files and making them accessible to both the lay community and professionals present new challenges. Collection-level, rather than item-level cataloging helps to deal with commercial music recordings. Double coding, using both the International Ethnographic Thesaurus and specifically Slavic metadata, can make field recordings accessible to both the Slavic community and specialists. The paper presents the new verbal indexing language (National Library of Poland Descriptors) used in Polish national bibliography. History and organization of Polish national bibliography as well as the context of other changes in the National Library of Poland are described. The paper provides information about National Library of Poland Descriptors main principles, and describes the steps that have been undertaken by subject specialists to improve the subject description of the national bibliography records, especially of its online version. It is in the light of this that this research work focuses on the influence of subject background and computer literacy skills on on-line cataloguing by librarians of Ekiti State University. This work adopted a survey research method and utilised questionnaire to generate data. Out of the twelve (12) copies of questionnaire distributed, eleven (11) copies (91.6%) were returned with valid responses. Findings revealed that librarians need constant training to keep up with international standards; this will enhance professional exposure and capacity building and ensure that best practices in cataloguing are adopted. The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries' Metadata and Cataloging Department partnered with the Special Collections and Digital Initiatives departments to obtain NACO certification. To meet the needs of our users and better represent Nevada figures in the Library of Congress Name Authority File, the three departments collaborated to create a new workflow and a tool that effectively extended name authority work and record contribution beyond traditional MARC cataloging. In January 2000, the University of California created the Shared Cataloging Program (SCP). Based at the University of California, San Diego, the SCP is a “centralized cataloging model” for the California Digital Library consortium collections. This work adopted a survey research method and utilised questionnaire to generate data. Out of the twelve (12) copies of questionnaire distributed, eleven (11) copies (91.6%) were returned with valid responses. Findings revealed that librarians need constant training to keep up with international standards; this will enhance professional exposure and capacity building and ensure that best practices in cataloguing are adopted. The purpose of this article is to highlight the status and application of an automated cataloging system in central university libraries in north India. Data has been collected using questionnaires. Interview and observation techniques have also been used to bring objectivity in the present study. Results show that varying levels of progress have been made with respect to implementation of a cataloging system. Results also show that with the help of automation, libraries have satisfied user communities by way of easy retrieval. It has removed discrepancies and set a trend for standardization. The aim of this short conference presentation was to highlight the importance of seeking alternative technological approaches to the optimization of university libraries’ resources and services. It discusses briefly the changes that are taking place in universities, and the importance for libraries of being seen to contribute to facilitating those changes. It explains the growing importance of research activity, and the expectations of researchers, an increasingly influential group in universities. It then goes on to outline the potential for increasing collections of electronic information by redirecting some of the effort of the libraries’ staff towards discovering and securing resources that are already available and offer data and information that may be valued by researchers. Finally, it provides a reminder that it is not enough to be good at what you do unless this is recognised, and stresses the importance of networking and advocacy as a means of providing a constant reminder to the influential and decision makers. Aozora Bunko is a Japanese full-text database of works that are in the public domain. The University of Florida libraries modified the approximately 5,000 Japanese language records into English language MARC records compatible withResource Description and Access(RDA), and added those records to OCLC and their integrated library system (ILS). Thus, this analytical cataloging project makes it possible to introduce more users to these Japanese anthologies in full text. This article describes the methods used to convert spreadsheet data that contains non-Roman characters into MARC records and indicates the possibilities that are applicable to similar projects in other non-Roman languages. This paper gives an account of the establishment of the Muckross Music Collection project in 1980 and of the author’s participation as a collector for the initiative from 1983 to 1990. The paper discusses methodologies and approaches adopted by the organizers for the collecting and the cataloguing of the materials. The account of the processes and encounters involved in fieldwork provides insights into motivations, expectations and results. The large number of musicians in a small area around Listowel in North Kerry revealed a rich ground for the collection of music. Likewise, repertoire varied according to individual and district. Narratives accompanying the tunes abounded. Players understood the importance and prestige of the project and that their music, largely unrecorded previously, would be preserved for the future. Sometimes the collector missed an opportunity due to a musician’s death. The paper indicates the value of this collection for future research projects on the history and ethnography of Irish traditional music in the twentieth century. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Cataloging and metadata operations in academic libraries are focusing on original cataloging of their unique and hidden collections that have not been available to users because of a lack of metadata. However, creating MARC format metadata is an expensive process; libraries need professional catalogers with appropriate experience and knowledge or must train staff to do the work. To improve the cataloging and metadata creation workflow, the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign Library developed a web application, Metadata Maker, which allows anyone to create metadata in four different formats, including MARC21 for an online public access catalog, regardless of their familiarity with metadata standards or systems that utilize the metadata. Released as an open source application, Metadata Maker supports diacritics and Unicode non-Roman language encoding, and creates metadata records that ensure discovery and access of unique library collections. The purpose of this paper is to discuss new paradigms in cataloguing in 21st century and its implications and challenges for libraries in developing countries like Nigeria. The authors recommended the adoption of new strategies. The paper adopted four dimensional approaches in the discussion of issues. In the first part, the paper introduces the concept of 21st century library. The second approach focused on the role of information and communication technology in cataloguing and recent cataloguing practices. In the third approach, the paper compared cataloguing practices in developed countries with Nigeria. The fourth and final approach discussed implications, challenges and strategies for Nigerian libraries to adopt. The paper listed some challenges and strategies that Nigerian libraries and other developing countries should adopt, such as funding, training of staff, provision and maintenance of infrastructure, eradication of corruption, and so on. While there is numerous literature on the challenges of application of ICT to library operations in Nigeria, very few recommend practical and workable strategies to solving the problems. There is a growing trend toward a consolidation of services for electronic resources management, A–Z journal listings, full text link resolving, and discovery services under a single service provider. In many cases, the adoption of a discovery service from a provider that is not the same as the libraries’ existing link resolver service means managing multiple knowledgebases. In this session, three librarians gave an overview of their experiences and strategies for maintaining separate link resolving and discovery services in lieu of adopting a full suite of services from a single service provider. Each speaker presented a case study on the advantages and challenges of managing their chosen discovery service: EBSCO Discovery Service, Ex Libris’ Primo and ProQuest’s Summon, in conjunction with the CUFTS/GODOT open source knowledgebase and link resolver service.
