Development of new and modification of existing chemicals, which act not only as binders, but also provide increased retention of fiber and other pulp components on the paper machine grid, accelerate pulp dehydration, and provide special properties (moisture resistance, heat resistance, improvement of other technical characteristics of paper and cardboard) of paper and cardboard, is an important and urgent task of chemical technology and ecology. This paper presents results of the corn starch modification with epoxypropyltriethanolammonium chloride, hexamethylolmelamine and hexamethylenetetramine. Modified starches provide the necessary strength indicators of cardboard from waste paper and low turbidity of wastewater. The obtained starches can be used in mills that use low-quality waste paper for the production of cardboard and paper products with the aim of saving fiber, reducing wastewater pollution and as a result reducing the negative impact on the environment. The contamination of paper products by various chemicals has been reported on a global level, but to date, no published research has investigated pharmaceutical contamination of paper-based products. In this study, pharmaceutical analysis was conducted on 42 samples collected from various points of the recycled paper value chain in Cape Town, South Africa, which included the various grades that may be included in the manufacturing of recycled paperboard. The analysis was achieved by ultrasonic-assisted extraction of paper samples before detection by UHPLC-Q Orbitrap. Quantification limits ranged from 1.15 pg/g for ketoprofen to 46.07 pg/g for methocarbamol. Pharmaceuticals identified in newspaper samples were dexamethasone, ketoprofen, and 17β-estradiol. The latter was also detected in paper shopping bags (up to 697.49 ng/g), infant bathtub packaging (280.62 ng/g), battery packaging (137.43 ng/g), and an egg carton (170.47 ng/g). Carbamazepine was also prominent with its concentration reaching 13.02 ng/g in a vegetable box. Suspect screening tentatively identified 14 additional pharmaceuticals in paper samples, with minocycline, prazepam, and anabolic steroids appearing more prominently. This pioneering study indicated that unintentional pharmaceutical exposure had expanded beyond environmental media to consumer products. The chloropropanols 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) are potentially carcinogenic contaminants that may occur in paper or cardboard e.g., as a result of the use of certain wet-strength agents. This study describes the contamination of cardboard toy products (books and puzzles) with 3-MCPD and 1,3-DCP, as well as the migration potential and oral exposure to young children (< 3 years). For 54 cardboard toy products, the cold water extract according to EN 645 was prepared and analyzed for the leaching of 3-MCPD and 1,3-DCP. The limits for food contact papers, as recommended by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), were exceeded in 31% and 23% of the samples, respectively. Some cases showed significant transfers of up to 4102 µg/L (3-MCPD) or 1295 µg/L (1,3-DCP). We estimated the oral exposure resulting for children playing with these toys by dynamic migration according to EN 71-10:2005, and applied it to children weighing 7.5 kg, taking into consideration the TDI for 3-MCPD or the BMDL10 for 1,3-DCP. Four samples exceeded the TDI for 3-MCPD and five samples had an MOE < 10,000 for 1,3-DCP, a clear indication that measures must be undertaken to minimize this exposure. These toy articles represent a serious risk regarding the exposure of children to the toxic substances 3-MCPD and 1,3-DCP, for which regulatory measures should be undertaken. This paper presents manufacture and testing of paper boards made from recycled paper pulp. The aim was to create material for creating paper boards which could be used in furniture design with various shapes. The used types of pulp were deinked pulp (DIP) and old corrugated cardboards (OCC). Several test pieces - paper boards were made with different combinations of materials and its mechanical and physical properties were tested. The used glue for each material was urea formaldehyde glue and starch in combination with glucose. The tests which were done were determination of density and density profile (EN 323:2005), moisture content (EN 322:2005), modulus of elasticity in bending and bending strength (EN 310:1993), thickness swelling and water absorption (EN317:2005), internal bond (EN 319:2005) and screw withdrawal resistance (EN 320:2011). The aim was to create material for creating boards which could be used in furniture design with various shapes. The result of this paper shows possible material combinations which could be used for furniture parts. Paper boards will be used for table top of side table in following steps. A procedure for the rapid simultaneous determination of anthraquinone and bisphenol A in paper and cardboard is proposed based on a combination of extraction with subcritical methanol and subsequent analysis of the extracts by HPLC‒tandem mass spectrometry. The achieved limits of detection are 25 and 250 µg/kg for anthraquinone and bisphenol A, respectively, and fully meet present-day safety requirements for pulp and paper products. The total duration of the analysis, including sample preparation, is not more than 45 min. The sensitivity of anthraquinone determination is 1‒2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the known procedures, including those with the preconcentration of analytes. The results obtained were successfully used to study paper and cardboard samples, in most of which unacceptably high levels of the anthraquinone concentration were found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allocating environmental impacts within life cycle assessment (LCA) is a recognised methodological problem. Different allocation methods have been developed to fulfil the various goals of LCA studies. At present, there is neither a consensus regarding the method to be used nor a one-fits-all method for dealing with recycling in LCA. The paper discusses some of the main allocation procedures practised in the pulp and paper industry, namely those covered by ISO/TS 14067:2018, GHG Protocol/PAS 2050, and the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). All in all, the allocation method described in the ISO/TS 14067:2018 standard was considered the most appropriate to account for open-loop recycling of paper products. However, the method neither considers the number of subsequent uses of recycled fibres, nor the recycled fibre age. Yet, both of them are considered especially important in the open-loop recycling of paper products. In order to account for these aspects, the present study proposes an advanced, step-wise approach to handle allocation in LCAs accounting for the open-loop recycling of paper products. The advanced approach is based on the fibre mass flow model used to calculate the mean fibre age and the mean number of uses of paper products within the European context. The approach was validated with the data from the pulp and paper industry, particularly examining the newsprint paper grade with different contents of recycled fibre and fibre age. The paper, however, introduces all the parameters required to perform allocation based on the proposed method for other paper grades. The categpory of global warming potential was considered in the study as an illustrative example. yet the method could be applied to other impact assessment categories. The results calculated using the proposed allocation approach were compared to those obtained with the allocation methods described in the GHG Protocol/PAS 2050 and the PEF. Summary: This study aims to analyse the importance of gypsum plasterboard cardboard for fire resistance. A new hypothesis considering the failure based on the cardboard degradation is defined. This hypothesis comes from the thermal analysis of gypsum and cardboard performed in the simultaneous thermal analysis apparatus. Simultaneous thermal analysis results also allow defining the dehydration process of the gypsum. A numerical model that considers gypsum dehydration and the failure hypothesis has been developed by using Fire Dynamic Simulator. This numerical model is validated against 6 fire resistance tests. Results show that we can appropriately tune the numerical model (for predicting time to failure) based on the thermal properties of cardboard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of the wrinkle measuring method described in Müller et al. (2017) and the subsequent evaluation algorithm of a range of deepdrawn samples were used to determine the influences and interdependencies of blankholder force, tool temperatures, and drawing height on the formation of wrinkles in paperboard. The main influences were identified and quantitatively evaluated. For the given experimental space, a regression function was derived and validated in further experiments. It was shown that a quadratic regression was superior to the previously used linear regression. The findings were discussed and compared with the results of similar experiments from past publications. Special attention was given to the wrinkles formed and the resulting quality of the formed paperboard cups. It was investigated the influence of mechanical factors on the restructuring of micro-corrugated cardboard based on physical models. We considered typical cases of stress-strain state of micro corrugated cardboard during laminating, particularly when micro-corrugated cardboard, as a resilient layer of a certain thickness, compressed by efforts of two rigid cylinder of the same radius. Deformation of micro corrugated cardboard associated with the change of bandwidth of adhesive layer. It was established that when the corrugated wave has a initial sinusoidal shape, the contact bandwidth increases with contact pressure increasing and, consequently, the surface deflection, due to bending deformation of wave corrugated form and limited to loss of elastic properties at extreme deflection. Elastic deformation (compression) of trapezoidal wave corrugated form does not changing the width of the contact zone, as connected only with the phenomenon of its side faces loss stability. It was established that the ratio of radiuses and maximum of wave corrugated deflection are major factors that influence on the deformation of micro-corrugated cardboard during lamination in longitudinal and transverse direction. Paperboard is widely used in different applications, such as packaging and graphic printing, among others. Consumption of recycled paper is growing, which has led the paper-mill packaging industry to apply strict quality controls. This means that it is very important to develop methods to test the quality of recycled products. In this article, we focus on determining the recovered-fiber content of paperboard samples by applying Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectroscopy in combination with multivariate statistical methods. To this end, two very fast, nondestructive approaches were applied: classification and quantification. The first approach is based on classifying unknown paperboard samples into two groups: high and low recovered-fiber content. Conversely, under the quantification approach, the content of recovered fiber in the incoming paperboard samples is determined. The experimental results presented in this article show that the classification approach, which classifies unknown incoming paperboard samples, is highly accurate and that the quantification approach has a root mean square error of prediction of about 4.1. The aim of the study was to construct a correlation between a permeation test method that simulates the migration of organic vapors and the actual migration of chemical contaminants from barrier-coated paperboard packaging. A correlation of this nature would enable manufacturers of barrier-coated paperboard to estimate the barrier properties of paperboard on a quality control level. A direct correlation was not plausible because the migration mechanisms that apply to the permeation test method and the actual migration differ. However, an indirect correlation was established. The permeation test method gave an indication of film integrity, whereas the actual migration was found to be rather dependent on coating weight. The spiking method, testing temperature, and vapor pressure of the contaminants were found to be variables directly affecting the validity of the correlation between permeation and migration methods. Paper production requires large amounts of cellulosic fiber, whereas the world's forested lands and croplands have a finite capacity to supply such resources. To deal with likely future pressure on forest resources, as well as to hold down costs of materials, publications examined in the preparation of this review suggest that the paper industry will need to implement several concurrent strategies. In particular, the industry can be expected to view recycling as a central part of its activities. Basis weights of various paper-based products can be expected to decrease over the coming decades, and more of the fiber content will be replaced with fillers such as calcium carbonate. Such trends will place intense demands upon chemical-based strategies to enhance the bonding within paper and paperboard. Based on the literature, further progress in reducing the amount of new forest resources used to meet a given set of paper product requirements will require a combined approach, taking into account various fiber attributes, nanostructures, novel concepts in bond formation, and advances in the unit operations of papermaking. The Ji'an PM No. 3 is the first linerboard machine in China to use multilayer curtain coating technology. Since successful startup at the end of 2011, further development has been carried out to optimize running conditions, coating formulations, and the base paper to provide a product with satisfactory quality and lower cost to manufacture. The key challenges include designing the base board structure for the desired mechanical strength, designing the surface properties for subsequent coating operations, optimizing the high-speed running of the curtain coater to enhance production efficiency, minimizing the amount of titanium dioxide in the coating color, and balancing the coated board properties to make them suitable for both offset and flexographic printing. The pilot and mill scale results show that curtain coating has a major positive impact on brightness, while smoothness is improved mainly by the blade coating and calendering conditions. Optimization of base board properties and the blade + curtain + blade concept has resulted in the successful use of 100% recycled fiber to produce base board. The optical, mechanical, and printability properties of the final coated board meet market requirements for both offset and flexographic printing. Machine runnability is excellent at the current speed of 1000 m/min, and titanium dioxide has been eliminated in the coating formulations without affecting the coating coverage. A significant improvement in the total cost of coated white liner production has been achieved, compared to the conventional concept of using virgin fiber in the top ply. Future development will focus on combining low cost with further quality improvements to make linerboard suitable for a wider range of end-use applications, including frozen-food packaging and folding boxboard. In this paper two procedures are developed for the identification of the parameters contained in an orthotropic elastic-plastic-hardening model for free standing foils, particularly of paper and paperboard. The experimental data considered are provided by cruciform tests and digital image correlation. A simplified version of the constitutive model proposed by Xia et al. (Int J Solids Struct 39:4053-4071, ) is adopted. The inverse analysis is comparatively performed by the following alternative computational methodologies: (a) mathematical programming by a trust-region algorithm; (b) proper orthogonal decomposition and artificial neural network. Cellulose fibers come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The heterogeneity of the fiber length, width, wall thickness, curl and external fibrillation is detrimental to the mechanical performance of products such as paper and paperboard. Although micro-mechanical models of these materials sometimes incorporate features of this heterogeneity, so far there is no standardized method of fully incorporating this. We examine a large number of industrial mechanical fiber pulps to determine what information such a standardized method would have to have. We find that the method must allow for both non-Gaussian distributions and dependence between the variables. We present a method of characterizing mechanical pulp under these conditions that views the individual fiber as outcome of a sampling process from a multivariate distribution function. The method is generally applicable to any dataset, even a non-Gaussian one with dependencies. Using a micro-mechanical model of a paper sheet the proposed method is compared with previously presented methods to study whether incorporating both a varying fiber size and dependencies is necessary to match the response of a sheet modeled with measured characterization data. The results demonstrate that micro-mechanical models of paper and paperboard should not neglect the influence of the dependence between the characteristic shape features of the fibers if the model is meant to match physical experiments. Poly(lactide)-coated paperboards were prepared by a solution coating method, and the effect of coating to improve properties of paperboard used for the manufacturing of 1-way paper cups was tested. Surface of PLA-coated paperboards was smooth and shiny like PE-coated paperboard, and the coating weight and thickness increased linearly with increasing PLA concentration of coating solution. Tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (E) of the paperboard also increased after PLA coating. Water vapor barrier or water-resistant properties tested, such as water vapor permeability (WVP), water absorptiveness (WA), and contact angle (CA) of water drop, indicated that water resistance of the paperboard was improved through surface coating with PLA. The increase in water resistance of PLA-coated paperboards was mainly due to the hydrophobicity of PLA and the improvement of water barrier properties increased depending on the PLA concentration. In addition, PLA-coated paperboard showed strong heat sealing property when coated with more than 1 w/v% of PLA. Wet strength of PLA-coated (3, w/v%) paperboard was comparable to or greater than that of PE-coated paperboard. All the test results indicated that the PLA-coated paperboard can be exploited for the manufacturing of 1-way paper cups as an alternative to the PE-coated paperboard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An investigation was undertaken to establish the concentration in paper products of dehydroabietic (DHA) and abietic (AA) resin acids, present in rosin, which are major toxicants of pulp- and paper-mill effluent. Their migration was studied from paper and paperboard products into various food-simulating solvents and the substitute fatty food simulant Tenax TA (modified polyphenylene oxide). DHA and AA were detected in five of 10 virgin paper products and in all 10 recycled paperboard products for food-contact use at concentrations of 14–500 and 110–1200&ThickSpace;µg/g, respectively. In virgin paper products, the highest migration was into 95% ethanol or heptane, with negligible or no migration into other solvents. In recycled paperboard products, migration was highest into 95% ethanol, but was also observed into 20% ethanol, water and heptane. Migration to Tenax TA was also observed and the migration level increased with time. The maximum migration levels of DHA and AA into food simulants were 0.853 and 3.14&ThickSpace;µg/g, respectively. The results suggest that, in the worst case, the daily intake of DHA and AA from paper and paperboard products was 50 times lower than the tolerable daily intake of rosin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dialkyl diketene dimers are used as sizing agents in the manufacture of paper and board for food contact applications to increase wetting stability. Unbound residues can hydrolyze and decarboxylate into dialkylketones. These non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) have potential to migrate to fatty foods in contact with those packaging materials. In Germany, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) established a specific migration limit (SML) of 5 mg/kg for the transfer of these dialkylketones into foodstuffs. In order to investigate the differences between simulants and real foods, an analytical method was optimized for extraction and quantification of dialkylketones in edible oils and fatty foods by gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and additionally by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), to confirm their identification and to quantify them in case of interferences. Dialkylketones are separated from the extracted fat by alkaline saponification of the triglycerides. Dialkylketones migration from paper-based food contact articles into organic solvents isooctane and dichloromethane, in olive and sunflower oils, and in fatty foods (croissants, Gouda, cheddar cheese, and salami was studied). As a result, it was found that the simulating tests, including the edible oil extraction tests, gave migration values that exceeded the SML largely, while the migration with the food samples were largely below the SML.
