Communities near transportation sources can be impacted by higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and other air pollutants. Few studies have reported on air quality in complex urban environments with multiple transportation sources. To better understand these environments, the Kansas City Transportation and Local-Scale Air Quality Study (KC-TRAQS) was conducted in three neighborhoods in Southeast Kansas City, Kansas. This area has several emissions sources including transportation (railyards, vehicles, diesel trucks), light industry, commercial facilities, and residential areas. Stationary samples were collected for 1-year (October 24, 2017, to October 31, 2018) at six sites using traditional sampling methods and lower-cost air sensor packages. This work examines PM less than 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), and trace metals data collected during KC-TRAQS. PM2.5 filter samples showed the highest 24-h mean concentrations (9.34 μg/m3) at the sites located within 20–50 m of the railyard. Mean 24-h PM2.5 concentrations, ranging from 7.96 to 9.34 μg/m3, at all sites were lower than that of the nearby regulatory site (9.83 μg/m3). Daily maximum PM2.5 concentrations were higher at the KC-TRAQS sites (ranging from 25.31 to 43.76 μg/m3) compared to the regulatory site (20.50 μg/m3), suggesting short-duration impacts of localized emissions sources. Across the KC-TRAQS sites, 24-h averaged PM2.5 concentrations from the sensor package (P-POD) ranged from 3.24 to 5.69 µg/m3 showing that, out-of-the-box, the PM sensor underestimated the reference concentrations. KC-TRAQS was supplemented by elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC) and trace metal analysis of filter samples. The EC/OC data suggested the presence of secondary organic aerosol formation, with the highest mean concentrations observed at the site within 20 m of the railyard. Trace metals data showed daily, monthly, and seasonal variations for iron, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel, with elevated concentrations occurring during the summer at most of the sites. Implications: This work reports on findings from a year-long air quality study in Southeast Kansas City, Kansas to understand micro-scale air quality in neighborhoods impacted by multiple emissions sources such as transportation sources (including a large railyard operation), light industry, commercial facilities, and residential areas. While dozens of studies have reported on air quality near roadways, this work will provide more information on PM2.5, black carbon, and trace metals concentrations near other transportation sources in particular railyards. For the first‐time, analysis of a decade long measurement of Black Carbon mass concentration (BC) was carried out at a representative central Indo‐Gangetic Plain (IGP) location, Varanasi (25.30°N, 83.03°E, 79 m asl), from 2009 to 2021 to understand its physical, optical, and radiative impacts. During the 13‐year study period, the daily BC mass concentration was found to vary between 0.07 and 46.23 μg m−3 (mean 9.18 ± 6.53 μg m−3) and showed a strong inter‐annual and intra‐annual variations. The inter‐annual variability of BC showed a significant decreasing trend (−0.47 μg m−3 yr−1), with a maximum during the post‐monsoon (−1.86 μg m−3 yr−1) and minimum during the pre‐monsoon season (−0.31 μg m−3 yr−1). The Black Carbon Aerosol Radiative Forcing (BC‐ARF) at the top of the atmosphere (BC‐ARFT), surface (BC‐ARFS), and within the atmosphere (BC‐ARFA) was found to be 10.3 ± 6.4, −30.1 ± 18.9, and 40.5 ± 25.2 W m−2, respectively. BC‐ARF also showed a strong inter‐annual variability with a decreasing trend for BC‐ARFT (−0.47 W m−2 yr−1) and BC‐ARFA (−1.94 W m−2 yr−1), while it showed an increasing trend for BC‐ARFS (1.33 W m−2 yr−1). Concentrated weighted trajectories (CWT) and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analyses were performed at the station to determine the potential source sectors and transport routes of BC aerosols. These analyses revealed that the long‐range source of BC at Varanasi originates from the upper and lower IGP, central highlands, southern peninsular region, Pakistan, and even from the Central East Asia region. Anthropogenic aerosols play a major role in the Earth–atmosphere system by influencing the Earth's radiative budget and precipitation and consequently the climate. The perturbation induced by changes in anthropogenic aerosols on the Earth's energy balance is quantified in terms of the effective radiative forcing (ERF). In this work, the present-day shortwave (SW), longwave (LW), and total (i.e., SW plus LW) ERF of anthropogenic aerosols is quantified using two different sets of experiments with prescribed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) from Earth system models (ESMs) participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6): (a) time-slice pre-industrial perturbation simulations with fixed SSTs (piClim) and (b) transient historical simulations with time-evolving SSTs (histSST) over the historical period (1850–2014). ERF is decomposed into three components for both piClim and histSST experiments: (a) ERFARI , representing aerosol–radiation interactions; (b) ERFACI , accounting for aerosol–cloud interactions (including the semi-direct effect); and (c) ERFALB , which is due to temperature, humidity, and surface albedo changes caused by anthropogenic aerosols. We present spatial patterns at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and global weighted field means along with inter-model variability (1 standard deviation) for all SW, LW, and total ERF components (ERFARI , ERFACI , and ERFALB) and for every experiment used in this study. Moreover, the inter-model agreement and the robustness of our results are assessed using a comprehensive method as utilized in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. Based on piClim experiments, the total present-day (2014) ERF from anthropogenic aerosol and precursor emissions is estimated to be - 1.11 ± 0.26 Wm-2 , mostly due to the large contribution of ERFACI to the global mean and to the inter-model variability. Based on the histSST experiments for the present-day period (1995–2014), similar results are derived, with a global mean total aerosol ERF of - 1.28 ± 0.37 Wm-2 and dominating contributions from ERFACI. The spatial patterns for total ERF and its components are similar in both the piClim and histSST experiments. Furthermore, implementing a novel approach to determine geographically the driving factor of ERF, we show that ERFACI dominates over the largest part of the Earth and that ERFALB dominates mainly over the poles, while ERFARI dominates over certain reflective surfaces. Analysis of the inter-model variability in total aerosol ERF shows that SW ERFACI is the main source of uncertainty predominantly over land regions with significant changes in aerosol optical depth (AOD), with eastern Asia contributing mostly to the inter-model spread of both ERFARI and ERFACI. The global spatial patterns of total ERF and its components from individual aerosol species, such as sulfates, organic carbon (OC), and black carbon (BC), are also calculated based on piClim experiments. The total ERF caused by sulfates (piClim- SO2) is estimated at - 1.11 ± 0.31 Wm-2 , and the OC ERF (piClim-OC) is - 0.35 ± 0.21 Wm-2 , while the ERF due to BC (piClim-BC) is 0.19 ± 0.18 Wm-2. For sulfates and OC perturbation experiments, ERFACI dominates over the globe, whereas for BC perturbation experiments ERFARI dominates over land in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in the Arctic. Generally, sulfates dominate ERF spatial patterns, exerting a strongly negative ERF especially over industrialized regions of the Northern Hemisphere (NH), such as North America, Europe, and eastern and southern Asia. Our analysis of the temporal evolution of ERF over the historical period (1850–2014) reveals that ERFACI clearly dominates over ERFARI and ERFALB for driving the total ERF temporal evolution. Moreover, since the mid-1980s, total ERF has become less negative over eastern North America and western and central Europe, while over eastern and southern Asia there is a steady increase in ERF magnitude towards more negative values until 2014. Rapid economic and energy growth in Asia has led to change in the loadings of black carbon (BC) in the last two decades. This work uses remotely sensed column absorbing aerosol optical depth to quantify BC loading day-by-day and grid-to-grid. Variance maximization is used to uniquely compute an unbiased set of observations of remotely sensed NO2 in space and time of urban and suburban sources, including regions with changing energy and industry. An inversely applied probabilistic MIE algorithm constrains the size, mixing state, and number of BC using four spectral observations. Significant differences in the particle size and mixing state are identified and attributed including: a drop around 2012 when China's national air pollution policies were adopted, a drop ahead of the 2008 Olympics, and flattening from 2015 onward. Incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels yields a variety of chemically distinct pyrolysis residues collectively referred to as black carbon (BC). Among these residues, dissolved black carbon (DBC) constitutes the water-soluble fraction, making it a significant component of the global dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool. Consequently, it exerts an impact on the aquatic carbon cycle and global climate change. Owing to its unique molecular structure, DBC exhibits reduced reactivity in aquatic environments, thereby influencing the toxicity and environmental geochemical behavior of organic pollutants and heavy metals. While recent years have seen a surge in studies on DBC, yielding valuable insights, significant knowledge gaps persist regarding the fate and cycling of DBC. This review consolidates the advancements in analytical and determination methods for DBC and offers a critical assessment of the advantages and limitations associated with various analytical techniques. Furthermore, it comprehensively surveys our current understanding of DBC, encompassing its molecular composition, spatial distribution, sources, and biogeochemical processes. The review also underscores prevailing challenges related to quantitative and qualitative methods and underscores research gaps concerning the physio-chemical transformation of DBC. Long-term measurements of the mass concentration of black carbon (BC) in the atmosphere (MBC) with well-constrained accuracy are indispensable to quantify its emission, transport, and deposition. The aerosol light absorption coefficient (babs), usually measured by a filter-based absorption photometer, including an Aethalometer (AE), is often used to estimate MBC. The measured babs is converted to MBC by assuming a value for the mass absorption cross section (MAC). Previously, we derived the MAC for AE (MAC (AE)) from measured babs and independently measured MBC values at two sites in the Arctic. MBC was measured with a filter-based absorption photometer with a heated inlet (COSMOS). The accuracy of the COSMOS-derived MBC (MBC (COSMOS)) was within about 15%. Here, we obtained additional MAC (AE) measurements to improve understanding of its variability and uncertainty. We measured babs (AE) and MBC (COSMOS) at Alert (2018–2020), Barrow (2012–2022), Ny-Ålesund (2012–2019), and Pallas (2019–2022). At Pallas, we also obtained four-wavelength photoacoustic aerosol absorption spectrometer (PAAS-4λ) measurements of babs. babs (AE) and MBC (COSMOS) were tightly correlated; the average MAC (AE) at the four sites was 11.4 ± 1.2 m2 g−1 (mean ± 1σ) at 590 nm and 7.76 ± 0.73 m2 g−1 at 880 nm. The spatial variability of MAC (AE) was about 11% (1σ), and its year-to-year variability was about 18%. We compared MAC (AE) in the Arctic with values at mid-latitudes, measured by previous studies, and with values obtained by using other types of filter-based absorption photometer, and PAAS-4λ. The cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity of black carbon (BC) particles importantly determines their impacts on cloud microphysics and atmospheric lifetime. This process is crucially influenced by the number of hygroscopic coating materials that BC acquire during the ageing process. It remains a challenge for ambient measurements to capture this process and link this with CCN activity of BC. Here, we directly measured the droplet activation diameter (D50) and activation fraction of BC-containing (BCc) particles (Fact,BC) in suburban Beijing using coupled measurements of size-resolved number concentrations of CCN at configured water supersaturation (SS) and BCc particles. The number concentration of BCc particles was found to peak at diameter 180–210 nm after acquiring coatings, larger than that for all particles (50–150 nm). Consequently, the initially smaller BC particles become enlarged and more hygroscopic, thereby exhibiting CCN activities than other particles. The Fact,BC increased from 42 % to 69 % in number and from 67 % to 85 % in mass as SS increased from 0.1 % to 0.2 % but tended to reach a plateau when SS > 0.2 %. Notably, Fact,BC and D50 linearly correlated with equivalent photochemical age, at a rate of +2 % h -1 and -3 nm h -1 , respectively. The results suggest BCc particles from anthropogenic sources can readily serve as CCN at a relatively low SS, and more than half of the BC population can be activated within a few hours, indicating that the surface-sourced BC can efficiently incorporate into clouds and potentially exert important indirect radiative impacts. In recent years, researchers have emphasized the use of fractal aggregate morphology instead of the core-shell morphology in global climate models for estimating black carbon (BC) forcing. This study confirms that fractal morphology plays an important role in reducing the overestimation of aerosol light absorption calculations in the case of an urban polluted environment. During periods of high anthropogenic BC emissions at Delhi, the particle light absorption is overestimated by 50 to 200% by assumptions of both external mixing and internal core-shell mixing. While incorporating the aggregate morphology model into light absorption simulations is beneficial in such cases, it comes with a high computational burden. To address this, we propose a metric known as morphology index (MI). This index distributes the weightage between the two extreme cases of core-shell and fractal aggregate to obtain accurate particle light absorption. Long-range transported aerosols were estimated to have an MI of 0.78, and fresh local emissions had an MI of 0.48. A BC-based aerosol classification approach was developed to determine the most relevant particle size mode for light absorption. The method is based on patterns found between the correlations of the BC mass concentrations and aerosol number concentrations at the different particles sizes (BC-size correlation spectra). BC-size correlation spectra are introduced as a concept that may be used (i) independently to understand the size-dependent heterogeneous distribution of aerosol light absorption and (ii) in conjunction with MI to accurately model the optical properties of aerosols in different BC regimes. Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OAs) and black carbon (BC), posing a significant risk to air quality and health. Simultaneously, as a substantial aerosol source, RWB also holds relevance in the context of aerosol radiative effects and climate. While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OAs in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Existing studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe primarily concentrate on urban and background sites and focus on BC properties. Despite the significant RWB emissions in rural areas, these locations have received comparatively less attention. The present scenario underscores the imperative for an improved understanding of RWB pollution, aerosol optical properties, and their subsequent connection to climate impacts, particularly in rural areas. We have characterized atmospheric aerosol particles from a central European rural site during wintertime in the village of Retje in Loški Potok, Slovenia, from 1 December 2017 to 7 March 2018. The village experienced extremely high aerosol concentrations produced by RWB and near-ground temperature inversion. The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 35 µgm-3 (max⁡=270 µgm-3) and 3.1 µgm-3 (max⁡=24 µgm-3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9×103 particles cm -3 (max⁡=59×103 particles cm -3). The mean total light absorption coefficients at 370 and 880 nm measured by an AE33 Aethalometer were 120 and 22 Mm -1 and had maximum values of 1100 and 180 Mm -1 , respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and a larger extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near-UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to 3 times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MAC OA,370nm=2.4 m 2 g -1 , and AAE BrC,370-590nm=3.9 , respectively. Simple-forcing-efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. The SFE results show a considerable forcing capacity from the local RWB aerosols, with a high sensitivity to OA absorption properties and a more substantial impact over bright surfaces like snow, typical during the coldest season with higher OA emissions from RWB. Our study's results are highly significant regarding air pollution, optical properties, and climate impact. Ships and other mobile pollution sources emitted massive ultrafine and low-resistivity particles containing black carbon (BC), which were harmful to human health and were difficult to capture by conventional electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). In this study, nanoscale carbon black was adopted as simulated particles (SP) with similar physicochemical properties for black carbon emitted from ships (SP-BC) to investigate the feasibility of using an ESP with square-grooved collecting plates for the removal of SP-BC at low backpressures. The increased applied voltage significantly improved the total collection of SP-BC whereas may also promote the conversion of relatively larger particle size SP-BC into nano-size below 20 nm. The outlet number concentration of SP-BC under 27 kV at 130°C was three times that of the inlet. While the reduction of the flow rate could strengthen the capture of SP-BC below 20 nm, and under the combined action of low flow rate and maximum applied voltage, the collection efficiency of 20-100 nm SP-BC could exceed 90%. In addition, the escape and capture characteristics of SP-BC under long-term rapping were revealed. The square-grooved collecting plate could effectively restrain the re-entrainment of collected SP-BC generated by rapping, and the nanoscale SP-BC was trapped in the grooves after rapping. The effects of emissions of diesel engines on black carbon and particle number concentrations, as well as climate-relevant aerosol properties, are explored for a summertime period in the Eastern U.S. using the chemical transport model PMCAMx-UF. A 50% reduction in diesel particulate emissions results in lower (23%) black carbon mass concentrations, as expected, and similar changes both in magnitude (27–30%) and spatial pattern for the absorption coefficient. However, an average 2% increase in the total particle number concentrations is predicted due to a decrease in the coagulation and condensation sinks and, at the same time, a 2% decrease in N100 (particles larger than 100 nm) concentrations. The diesel reduction results suggest that mitigation of large diesel particles and/or particle mass emissions can reduce climate-relevant properties related to the absorption of black carbon and provide health benefits; however, the changes could also have the unintended effect of increased ultrafine particle number concentrations. Changes in cloud condensation nuclei are predicted to be significantly less than expected, assuming a proportional reduction during this photochemically active period. Doubling the diesel emissions results in a domain-averaged 3% decrease in total particle number concentrations and a 3% increase in N100 concentrations. PM2.5 BC concentrations increase on average by 46%, and similar changes (52–60%) are predicted for the absorption coefficient. Extinction coefficients for both perturbation simulations changed by only a few percent due to the dominance of scattering aerosols in the Eastern U.S. during this period characterized by high photochemical activity. Currently, changes in rainfall regimes have intensified biomass burning in central Brazil. These fires, resulting mainly from anthropic action, emit large amounts of gases and aerosols into the atmosphere. The emission of these constituents in the dry season can drastically alter the functioning of ecosystems. In this work, it was verified that the high concentrations of Black Carbon (BC) have a direct relationship with the air temperature and influence the carbon capture process. This study was the result of a long-term campaign carried out in the northern region of the Brazilian Pantanal, between 2017 and 2019. Measurements of CO2 fluxes were evaluated together with measurements of temperature, radiation and BC concentrations. The results showed that in some episodes, the increase in BC concentration inhibits photosynthetically active radiation and increases air temperature. As a consequence of the increase in BC concentration, a reduction in carbon capture was observed. In a specific episode in October 2017, this work estimated a deficit of 1.65 kg.m−2 in CO2 capture due to the emission of BC in the Pantanal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Black carbon (BC) is a crucial component of organic carbon (OC), forming due to incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. Identifying the distribution characteristics and possible sources of BC is essential for managing carbonaceous pollution in freshwater lakes, especially in a mining and metallurgy region, where the metallurgical activities poses a significant threat to the aquatic ecological environment. This study examined the distribution characteristics and potential sources of BC in surface sediments from three distinct development areas. Materials and methods: In January 2019, 32 surface sediment samples were collected, including 17 from Wang Lake (WL), five from Lianhua Lake (LL), and 10 from Mati Lake (ML). The BC measurements were conducted using the thermal-optical reflectance (TOR) method with quality control. Additionally, empty silver capsules were thermally treated and acidified as blank controls. Statistical analyses, correlation analyses, BC/OC ratios, and char/soot ratios were employed to examine the spatial distribution and potential sources of BC in the different lakes. Results and discussion: The measured BC concentrations were 0.722 ± 0.339, 1.99 ± 1.90 and 0.748 ± 0.313 mg g−1 in WL, LL, and ML, respectively. Spatial analysis revealed elevated BC levels in LL, WL, and specific areas within WL. The char/soot ratios exhibited variability, with lower ratios in LL, higher ratios in ML, and variable ratios in WL. Correlation analysis and the relationship between BC/OC ratios and char/soot ratios indicated the influence of local biomass combustion deposition on BC accumulation in lake sediments. Furthermore, by comparing BC/OC ratios and char/soot ratios with local developmental characteristics, contributions from vehicular emissions and coal combustion deposition were observed in LL. The leakage of fossil fuels from boats may also contribute to the accumulation of carbon compounds in WL. Long-term metallurgical-related activities involving various sources of energy burning may account for the BC accumulation in ML, located in an industrial area. Conclusions: Human activities significantly influenced the distribution and sources of BC in sediments from different types of lakes in areas with diverse developmental characteristics. These findings provide valuable insights for researchers and government authorities to understand the main contributions of BC to sediment and develop targeted policies for preventing and controlling carbonaceous pollution based on the unique developmental characteristics in similar mining areas worldwide. Black carbon (BC) is one of the most important climate forcer with severe health effects. Large uncertainties in radiative forcing estimation and health impact assessment arise from the fact that there is no standardized method to measure BC mass concentration. This study presents a two-year comparison of three state-of-the-art BC measurement techniques at the high-altitude research station Pic du Midi located in the French Pyrenees at an altitude of 2877 m above sea level. A recently upgraded aethalometer AE33, a thermal-optical analyzer Sunset and a single-particle soot photometer SP2 were deployed to measure simultaneously the mass concentration of equivalent black carbon (MeBC), elemental carbon (MEC) and refractory black carbon (MrBC), respectively. Significant deviations in the response of the instruments were observed. All techniques responded to seasonal variations of the atmospheric changes in BC levels and exhibited good correlation during the whole study period. This indicates that the different instruments quantified the same particle type, despite the fact that they are based on different physical principles. However the slopes and correlation coefficients varied between instrument pairs. The largest biases were observed for the AE33 with MeBC values that were around 2 times greater than MrBC and MEC values. The principal reasons of such large discrepancy was explained by the too low MAC and C values recommended by the AE33 manufacturer and applied to the absorption coefficients measured by the AE33. In addition, the long-range transport of dust particles at PDM in spring caused significant increases in the bias between AE33 and SP2 by up to a factor 8. The Sunset MEC measurements agreed within around 17 % with the SP2 MrBC values. The largest overestimations of MEC were observed when the total carbon concentration were below 25 µ gC cm−2 , which is probably linked to the incorrect determination of the OC-EC split point. Another cause of the discrepancy between instruments was found to be the limited detection range of the SP2, which did not allow the total detection of fine rBC particles. The procedure used to estimate the missing mass fraction of rBC not covered by the measurement range of the SP2 was found to be critical. We found that a time-dependent correction based on fitting the observed rBC size distribution with a multimodal lognormal distribution are needed to accurately estimate MrBC over a larger size range. Atmospheric aerosols strongly influence the global climate by their light absorption (e.g., black carbon, BC, brown carbon, BrC) and scattering (e.g., sulfate) properties. This study presents simultaneous measurements of ambient aerosol light absorption properties and chemical composition from three large-footprint South Asian receptor sites during the South Asian Pollution Experiment (SAPOEX) in December-March 2018. The BC mass absorption cross-section (BC-MAC678) values increased from 3.5 ± 1.3 at the Bhola Climate Observatory-Bangladesh (i.e., located at exit outflow of Indo-Gangetic Plain) to 6.4 ± 1.3 at the two regional receptor observatories at Maldives Climate Observatory-Hanimaadhoo (MCOH) and Maldives Climate Observatory-Gan (MCOG). This likely reflects a coating-enhancement effect due to ageing of the aerosols during long-range transport. At the same time, the BrC-MAC365 decreased by a factor of three from the IGP exit to the equatorial Indian Ocean, likely due to photochemical bleaching of organic chromophores. The high chlorine-to-sodium ratio at the near-source-region BCOB suggests a significant contribution of chorine from anthropogenic activities. This particulate Cl- has the potential to convert into Cl-radicals that can affect the oxidation capacity of the polluted air. Moreover, Cl- is shown to be near-fully consumed during the long-range transport. The results of this synoptic study over the large South Asian scale have significance for understanding the ageing effect of the optical and chemical properties of aerosols as the pollution from the Indo-Gangetic Plain disperses over regional scales. Representing mixing state of black carbon (BC) is challenging for global climate models (GCMs). The Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6) with the four‐mode version of the Modal Aerosol Module (MAM4) represents aerosols as fully internal mixtures with uniform composition within each aerosol mode, resulting in high degree of internal mixing of BC with non‐BC species and large mass ratio of coating to BC (RBC, the mass ratio of non‐BC species to BC in BC‐containing particles). To improve BC mixing state representation, we coupled a machine learning (ML) model of BC mixing state index trained on particle‐resolved simulations to the CAM6 with MAM4 (MAM4‐ML). In MAM4‐ML, we use RBC to partition accumulation mode particles into two new modes, BC‐free particles and BC‐containing particles. We adjust RBC to make the modeled BC mixing state index (χmode) match the one predicted by the ML model (χML). On a global average, the mass fraction of BC‐containing particles in accumulation mode decreases from 100% (MAM4‐default) to 48% (MAM4‐ML). The globally averaged χmode decreases from 78% (MAM4‐default) to 63% (MAM4‐ML, 19% reduction) and agrees well with χML (66%). The RBC decreases by 52% for accumulation mode and better agrees with observations. The hygroscopicity drops by 9% for BC‐containing particles in accumulation mode, leading to a 20% reduction in the BC activation fraction. The surface BC concentration increases most (6.9%) in the Arctic, and the BC burden increases by 4%, globally. Soils and the vadose zone are the major terrestrial repository of carbon (C) in the form of soil organic matter (SOM), more resistant black carbon (BC), and inorganic carbonate. Differentiating between these pools is important for assessing vulnerability to degradation and changes in the C cycle affecting soil health and climate regulation. Major monitoring programs from field to continent are now being undertaken to track changes in soil carbon (SC). Inexpensive, robust measures that can differentiate small changes in the C pools in a single measurement are highly desirable for long‐term monitoring. In this study, we assess the accuracy and precision of thermo‐gravimetric analysis (TGA) using organic matter standards, clay minerals, and soils from a national data set. We investigate the use of TGA to routinely differentiate between C pools, something no single measurement has yet achieved. Based on the kinetic nature of thermal oxidation of SC combined with the different thermodynamic stabilities of the molecules, we designed a new method to quantify the inorganic and organic SC and further separate the organic biogeochemically active SOM (as loss on ignition, LOI) from the resistant BC in soils. We analyze the TGA spectrums of a national soil monitoring data set (n = 456) and measure total carbon (TC) using thermal oxidation and also demonstrate a TC/LOI relationship of 0.55 for soils ranging from mineral soils to peat for the United Kingdom consistent with previous monitoring campaigns. Black carbon (BC) aerosols, which arise from incomplete combustion processes, possess the capacity to absorb solar radiation, thereby contributing significantly to the issue of climate warming. However, accurately estimating their radiative effect is challenging, influenced by emissions, sizing, morphology, and mixing state. BC particles undergo aging processes that can alter their physical characteristics and mixing state, consequently affecting their optical properties. In this study, we assessed the mixing state of BC across diverse atmospheric environments. Results demonstrate that mixing state heterogeneity is a ubiquitous phenomenon. In background atmospheres, BC exhibited less homogeneous states compared to those in urban and suburban areas, where heterogeneity was driven by primary emissions. Our study provides direct observational evidence that the heterogeneity of particle-particle mixing can reduce the light absorption enhancement of BC in all atmospheres, with a deviation of up to approximately 24% under background conditions. Fire emissions from the Maritime Continent (MC) over the western tropical Pacific are strongly influenced by El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), posing various climate effects to the Earth system. In this study, we show that the historical biomass burning emissions of black carbon (BCbb) aerosol in the dry season from the MC are strengthened in El Niño years due to the dry conditions. The eastern Pacific type of El Niño exerts a stronger modulation in BCbb emissions over the MC region than the central Pacific type of El Niño. Based on simulations using the fully coupled Community Earth System Model (CESM), the impacts of increased BCbb emissions on ENSO variability and frequency are also investigated in this study. With BCbb emissions from the MC scaled up by a factor of 10, which enables the identification of climate response from the internal variability, the increased BCbb heats the local atmosphere and changes land–sea thermal contrast, which suppresses the westward transport of the eastern Pacific surface water. It leads to an increase in sea surface temperature in the eastern tropical Pacific, which further enhances ENSO variability and increases the frequency of extreme El Niño and La Niña events. This study highlights the potential role of BCbb emissions on extreme ENSO frequency, and this role may be increasingly important in the warming future with higher wildfire risks. Black carbon (BC) is the strongest visible-light-absorbing aerosol component in the atmosphere, with a significant impact on Earth’s radiative budget. Accurate measurement of BC light absorption is crucial for estimating its radiative effect. The micro-aethalometer model 200 (MA200) by AethLabs, USA, offers high-time-resolution measurement of the multi-wavelength absorption coefficient (σab) within 1 s, making it widely used in aerial measurement due to its compact size and light weight. However, the reliability of the measured σab has not been extensively studied in previous research. In this study, we evaluate the performance of MA200 by comparing σab measurements obtained from MA200 with those from the aethalometer model 33 (AE33) by Magee, USA. Our results revealed a significant variation in the determinant coefficient (R²) between σab measurements from MA200 and AE33, depending on the time resolution. The R² increases from 0.1 to 0.5 and further to 0.97 as the time resolution of σab increases from 1 s to 30 s and 60 s, respectively. We recommend a minimum time resolution of 30 s for stable σab measurements using MA200. Moreover, we determine σab from attenuation coefficient (σATN) measured by MA200 as σab = (σATN – σ0)/CMA, where σ0 ranges from – 15.3 Mm–1 to – 6.4 Mm–1 and CMA ranges from 2.65 to 3.21. The impacts of soot particles on climate and human health depend on the concentration of black carbon (BC) as well as the thickness and composition of the coating material, i.e., organic and inorganic compounds internally mixed with BC. In this study, the size-resolved chemical composition of BC-containing aerosol was measured using a high-resolution soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) during wintertime in Fresno, California, a location influenced by abundant combustion emissions and frequent fog events. Concurrently, particle optical properties were measured to investigate the BC absorption enhancement. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis was performed on the SP-AMS mass spectral measurements to explore the sources of soot particles and the atmospheric processes affecting the properties of BC coatings. The analysis revealed that residential woodburning and traffic are the dominant sources of soot particles. Alongside primary soot particles originating from biomass burning (BBOA BC) and vehicles (HOA BC) two distinct types of processed BC-containing aerosol were identified: fog-related oxidized organic aerosol (FOOA BC) and winter-background OOA BC (WOOA BC). Both types of OOA BC showed evidence of having undergone aqueous processing, albeit with differences. The concentration of FOOA BC was substantially elevated during fog events, indicating the formation of aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA) within fog droplets. On the other hand, WOOA BC was present at a relatively consistent concentration throughout the winter and was likely related to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in both the gas phase and aerosol liquid water. By comparing the chemical properties and temporal variations in FOOA BC and WOOA BC , we gain insights into the key aging processes of BC aerosol. It was found that aqueous-phase reactions facilitated by fog droplets had a significant impact on the thickness and chemical composition of BC coatings, thereby affecting the light absorption and hygroscopic properties of soot particles. Anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and precursor compounds are known to significantly affect the energy balance of the Earth–atmosphere system, alter the formation of clouds and precipitation, and have a substantial impact on human health and the environment. Global models are an essential tool for examining the impacts of these emissions. In this study, we examine the sensitivity of model results to the assumed height of SO 2 injection, seasonality of SO 2 and black carbon (BC) particulate emissions, and the assumed fraction of SO 2 emissions that is injected into the atmosphere as particulate phase sulfate (SO 4) in 11 climate and chemistry models, including both chemical transport models and the atmospheric component of Earth system models. We find large variation in atmospheric lifetime across models for SO 2 , SO 4 , and BC, with a particularly large relative variation for SO 2 , which indicates that fundamental aspects of atmospheric sulfur chemistry remain uncertain. Of the perturbations examined in this study, the assumed height of SO 2 injection had the largest overall impacts, particularly on global mean net radiative flux (maximum difference of - 0.35 W m -2), SO 2 lifetime over Northern Hemisphere land (maximum difference of 0.8 d), surface SO 2 concentration (up to 59 % decrease), and surface sulfate concentration (up to 23 % increase). Emitting SO 2 at height consistently increased SO 2 and SO 4 column burdens and shortwave cooling, with varying magnitudes, but had inconsistent effects across models on the sign of the change in implied cloud forcing. The assumed SO 4 emission fraction also had a significant impact on net radiative flux and surface sulfate concentration. Because these properties are not standardized across models this is a source of inter-model diversity typically neglected in model intercomparisons. In this study, we concurrently determined the combined ratio of black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO) in two distinct cities in eastern India: Jamshedpur (JSR) and Kharagpur (KGP). The investigation spanned from October 2019 to January 2020, revealing BC mass concentrations of 10.06 (± 1.59) µg m−3 in JSR and 5.49 (± 1.15) µg m−3 in KGP. Additionally, the average CO concentrations measured were approximately 913.63 (± 217.85) ppbv in JSR and 507.31 (± 125.06) ppbv in KGP. Analysis of GIOVANNI NASA satellite data highlighted elevated concentrations of BC and CO in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), the foothills of the central Himalayas, and the eastern region of India. Utilizing diagnostic ratio analysis to attribute the sources of BC, we found that wood-burning contributed more significantly to the BC levels in KGP compared to JSR. The higher overall aerosol concentration in JSR was attributed to the prevalence of numerous industries and heavy traffic. Pearson correlation analysis indicated substantial correlations between BC–CO and BC–PM2.5, with correlation coefficients of r2 = 0.65 and r2 > 0.96, respectively. These results underscore the need for significant changes to be implemented, such as transitioning to alternative appliances that do not rely on fossil fuels. By adopting cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, we can effectively mitigate the adverse impacts of BC, PM2.5, and CO emissions on air quality and public health. Air back-trajectory analysis unveiled the predominant northward transmission of pollution from northern India. Additionally, air masses originating from neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan also contributed to the pollution levels. The mixing state of black carbon (BC) aerosols, which is the diameter ratio of coated particle to BC core (Dp/Dc), can be retrieved by the single-particle soot photometer (SP2). However, the retrieved Dp/Dc contains errors, because the core–shell model and Mie scattering calculation are normally employed in the retrieval principle of SP2 and the spherical core–shell structure seriously deviated from the real morphology of coated BC. In this study, fractal models are constructed to represent thinly and thickly coated BC particles for optical simulations, the differential scattering cross-sections are selected as references to conduct optical retrieval of particle diameter (Dp) based on Mie theory, just like the retrieval principle of SP2, and the volume equivalent diameter of BC core (Dc) is the same for fractal and spherical models. Then, the retrieval errors of the mixing state (Dp/Dc) of BC are investigated from numerical aspects, and the estimation accuracy of BC radiative forcing is analyzed through the simple forcing efficiency (SFE) equation with SP2 retrieval results taken into consideration. Results show that SP2 retrieved Dp/Dc based on Mie theory underestimates the realistic Dp/Dc of coated BC at most particle sizes. The retrieval errors of Dp/Dc of thinly coated BC for both single particles and particle groups are larger than those of thickly coated BC. In addition, evaluation errors of radiative forcing of coated BC caused by retrieval errors of SP2 are up to about 55 % and 95 % at 1064 and 532 nm , respectively. Black carbon (BC) aerosols in the atmosphere play a significant role in climate systems due to their strong ability to absorb solar radiation. The lifetime of BC depends on atmospheric transport, aging and consequently on wet scavenging processes (in-cloud and below-cloud scavenging). In this study, sequential rainwater samples in eight rainfall events collected in 2 mm interval were measured by a tandem system including a single particle soot photometer (SP2) and a nebulizer. The results showed that the volume-weighted average (VWA) mass concentrations of refractory black carbon (rBC) in each rainfall event varied, ranging from 10.8 to 78.9 µg/L. The highest rBC concentrations in the rainwater samples typically occurred in the first fraction from individual rainfall events. The geometric mean median mass-equivalent diameter (MMD) decreased under precipitation, indicating that r BC with larger sizes was relatively aged and preferentially removed by wet scavenging. A positive correlation (R 2 = 0.73) between the VWA mass concentrations of r BC in rainwater and that in ambient air suggested the important contribution of scavenging process. Additionally, the contributions of in-cloud and below-cloud scavenging were distinguished and accounted for 74% and 26% to wet scavenging, respectively. The scavenging ratio of rBC particles was estimated to be 0.06 on average. This study provides helpful information for better understanding the mechanism of rBC wet scavenging and reducing the uncertainty of numerical simulations of the climate effects of rBC. The present study focused on the temporal variability, meteorological influences, potential sources, and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols over two contrasting environments during 2011–2013. We have chosen Agartala (AGR) city in Northeast India as one of our sites representing the rural-continental environment and Patiala (PTA) as an urban site in Northwest India. The seasonal averaged equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentration in AGR ranges from 1.55 to 38.11 µg/m3 with an average value of 9.87 ± 8.17 µg/m3, whereas, at an urban location, PTA value ranges from 1.30 to 15.57 µg/m3 with an average value of 7.83 ± 3.51 µg/m3. The annual average eBC concentration over AGR was observed to be ~ 3 times higher than PTA. Two diurnal peaks (morning and evening) in eBC have been observed at both sites but were observed to be more prominent at AGR than at PTA. Spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been observed to be in the range from 0.33 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) to 0.85 ± 0.22 (winter) at AGR and 0.47 ± 0.04 (pre-monsoon) to 0.74 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) at PTA. The concentration of eBC and its diurnal and seasonal variation indicates the primary sources of eBC as local sources, synoptic meteorology, planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics, and distant transportation of aerosols. The wintertime higher values of eBC at AGR than at PTA are linked with the transportation of eBC from the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP). Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OA) and black carbon (BC). While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OA in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe typically focus on urban and background sites and only cover BC properties. However, RWB is more prevalent in rural areas, and the present scenario indicates that an improved understanding of the RWB aerosol optical properties and their subsequent connection to climate impacts is necessary for rural areas. We have characterized atmospheric aerosol particles from a central European rural site during wintertime in the village of Retje in Loški Potok, Slovenia, from 01.12.2017 to 07.03.2018. The village experienced extremely high aerosol concentrations produced by RWB and near-ground temperature inversion. The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 34.8 µg m-3 (max = 271.8 µg m-3) and 3.1 µg m-3 (max = 24.3 µg m-3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9 x 103 particles cm-3 (max = 53.5 x 103 particles cm-3). The mean total light absorption coefficient at 370 nm and 880 nm measured by an Aethalometer AE33 were 122.8 Mm-1 and 15.3 Mm-1 and had maximum values of 1103.9 Mm-1 and 179.1 Mm-1, respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than those reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to three times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MACOA, 370 nm= 2.4 m2 g-1, and AAEBrC, 370–590 nm= 3.9, respectively. Simple forcing efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. The SFE results show a considerable forcing capacity from the local RWB aerosols, with a high sensitivity to OA absorption properties and a more substantial impact over bright surfaces like snow, typical during the coldest season with higher OA emissions from RWB. Our study's results are highly significant regarding air pollution, optical properties, and climate impact. To elucidate the variations in mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC) in PM 2.5 and their light absorption characteristics in Lanzhou, we conducted one-year online measurements by using a newly developed total carbon analyzer (TCA08) coupled with an aethalometer (AE33) from July 2018 to July 2019. The mean OC and BC concentrations were 6.4 ± 4.4 and 2.0 ± 1.3 µg/m3, respectively. Clear seasonal variations were observed for both components, with winter having the highest concentrations, followed by autumn, spring, and summer. The diurnal variations of OC and BC concentrations were similar throughout the year, with daily two peaks occurring in the morning and evening, respectively. A relatively low OC/BC ratio (3.3 ± 1.2, n = 345) were observed, indicating that fossil fuel combustion was the primary source of the carbonaceous components. This is further substantiated by relatively low biomass burning contribution (f biomass : 27.1% ± 11.3%) to BC using aethalometer based measurement though f biomass value which increased significantly in winter (41.6% ± 5.7%). We estimated a considerable brown carbon (BrC) contribution to the total absorption coefficient (b abs) at 370 nm (yearly average of 30.8% ± 11.1%), with a winter maximum of 44.2% ± 4.1% and a summer minimum of 19.2% ± 4.2%. Calculation of the wavelength dependence of total b abs revealed an annual mean AAE 370-520 value of 4.2 ± 0.5, with slightly higher values in spring and winter. The mass absorption cross-section of BrC also exhibited higher values in winter, with an annual mean of 5.4 ± 1.9 m2/g, reflecting the impact of emissions from increased biomass burning on BrC concentrations. Filter samples collected by the samplers were analyzed by a laboratory-based, thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) method of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health using a Sunset Laboratory OC-EC analyzer. The EC, OC, and total carbon (TC) results for filter samples collected by the high-volume (38 L min−1) sampler are compared to those obtained by a low-volume (4 L min−1) sampler at ground level. Prior to the use of the developed high-volume sampler at 150 m, three 30-min air samples, taken from 11:00 to 15:00, and three 1-h samples, taken between 15:00 and 22:00, were collected at ground level by the drone-based system. For reference, the low-volume filter sample was collected over the 12-h period on the same day. In addition, particulate matter and black carbon concentrations were obtained as supportive data. In the ground-level test, the average EC, OC, and TC concentrations determined with the high-volume (drone) samples agree well with those determined with the 12-h, integrated, low-volume sample. Further field samplings on the ground and at 150-m were conducted over 2 days to assess the developed drone-based sampling system for measurement of carbonaceous aerosols. Aerosol particles have both natural and anthropogenic origins and are ubiquitous in the atmosphere. One particularly important type is carbonaceous aerosol, including a specific subset often termed "elemental carbon" chemically or "black carbon" (BC) radiatively. Carbonaceous aerosol particles have implications for atmospheric chemistry, human health, and climate, both directly and via their ability to act as sites of cloud droplet or ice crystal formation. Laboratory experiments and theory are needed to better understand these particles, specifically their radiative impact. Here we present laboratory measurements of scattering of visible radiation by analogs of atmospheric BC aggregates at scattering angles of 135±20 ∘ obtained using a depolarizing optical particle counter and accompanying theoretical calculations of scattering by compact and fractal theoretical BC aggregates. We show that, with random orientation, the theoretical calculations reproduce the qualitative behavior of the measurements but are unable to reproduce the highest values of the linear depolarization ratio; we are only able to obtain high values of the linear depolarization ratio using fixed orientation. Both our measurements and our theoretical calculations point to the possibility that fresh, unaged, bare, or uncoated BC aggregates, as opposed to the aged or coated BC or soot that was investigated in previous studies, can exhibit a higher back-scattering linear depolarization than previously assumed. Black carbon (BC) is a crucial component of aerosols in the atmosphere. Understanding the hygroscopicity of BC particles is important for studying their role as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN), as well as their chemical behavior and atmospheric lifetime. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the factors that determine the hygroscopic properties of fresh BC. In this work, the hygroscopic behavior of BC particles generated from different types of fuel and aged with SO2 for varying durations were measured by a vapor sorption analyzer while various characterizations of BC were conducted to understand the key factors that influence the hygroscopic properties of BC. It was found that the presence of water-soluble substances in BC facilitates the completion of monolayer water adsorption at low relative humidity, while also increasing the number of water adsorption layers at high relative humidity. On the other hand, BC prepared by burning organic fuels, which typically lacks water-soluble inorganic ions, primarily exhibits hygroscopicity characteristics influenced by organic carbon (OC) and microstructure. Furthermore, the hygroscopicity of BC can be enhanced by the formation of sulfate ions due to heterogeneous oxidation of SO2. This finding sheds light on the critical factors that affect BC hygroscopicity during water adsorption and allows for estimating the interaction between water molecules and BC particles in a humid atmosphere. Refractive indices (RI) of particles are important in determining their radiative forcing. We measured optical coefficients of particles classified according to their aerodynamic diameter, allowing retrieval of RI using a Mie model. At 405 nm, the RI of BC from a diesel engine was 1.870 (±0.132) + 0.640 (±0.015) i. The RI of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), using α‐pinene and o‐cresol as precursors, were 1.584 ± 0.015 and 1.738 (±0.021) + 0.0316 (±0.0018) i, respectively. Neither SOAs demonstrated absorption at 660 nm and their RIs were 1.551 ± 0.011 and 1.586 ± 0.011, the similar value suggesting that a single RI may be sufficient for simulating the radiative forcing of SOA at this wavelength. In addition, organics were condensed onto BC to test optical models for coated particles. For BC particles coated with non‐absorbing organics, the extinction is predicted accurately by all models. The absorption is significantly over‐estimated by core‐shell, volume mixing, and effective medium approximations and under‐estimated by external mixing. For BC particles coated with weakly absorbing organics, the extinction and absorption are best described by external mixing when the coating ratio is less than 2.5. When the coating ratio is over 2.5, the difference between the external mixing predictions and measurements increases with the coating ratio. Our results show that the absorption of coated BC particles may not be predicted accurately based solely on the equivalent diameter, coating ratio, and pure component RIs, and considerations of additional factors such as morphology may be necessary. This is in part due to the lack of accurate refractive index (RI) descriptions for both BC and BrC. Previous studies have used mobility selection approaches to select BC/BrC particles upstream of optical spectroscopy instruments to allow RI characterizations, but these retrievals suffer from issues caused by multiple charging. We solved this issue by using a new aerosol classification technique, enabling optical measurements for an aerosol sample classified according to a single physical size without multiple charge artifacts, which improves the subsequent RI retrieval. In addition, non‐absorbing and weakly absorbing organic materials were condensed onto BC to form coated soot particles, allowing different optical models for mixed particles to be evaluated. Accurate and timely prediction of lightning occurrences plays a crucial role in safeguarding human well-being and the global environment. Machine-learning-based models have been previously employed for nowcasting lightning occurrence, offering advantages in computation efficiency. However, these models have been hindered by limited accuracy due to inadequate representation of the intricate mechanisms driving lightning and a restricted training dataset. To address these limitations, we present a machine learning approach that integrates aerosol features to more effectively capture lightning mechanisms, complemented by enriched satellite observations from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM). Through training a well-optimized LightGBM model, we successfully generate spatially continuous (0.25° by 0.25°) and hourly lightning nowcasts over the Contiguous United States (CONUS) during the summer season, surpassing the performance of competitive baselines. Model performance is evaluated using various metrics, including accuracy (94.3%), probability of detection (POD, 75.0%), false alarm ratio (FAR, 38.1%), area under curve of precision–recall curve (PRC-AUC, 0.727). In addition to the enriched dataset, the improved performance can be attributed to the inclusion of aerosol features, which has significantly enhanced the model. This crucial aspect has been overlooked in previous studies. Moreover, our model unravels the influence of aerosol composition and loading on lightning formation, indicating that high aerosol loading consisting of sulfates and organic compounds tends to enhance lightning activity, while black carbon inhibits it. These findings align with current scientific knowledge and demonstrate the immense potential for elucidating the complex mechanisms underlying aerosol-associated lightning phenomena. Global precipitation change in response to climate change is closely related to surface temperature, the forcing agent, and the atmospheric dry energy budget, but regional precipitation change is more complex. In this study, we use experiments from the Precipitation Driver and Response Model Intercomparison Project (PDRMIP) wherein carbon dioxide, sulfate aerosols, and black carbon aerosols are perturbed to study the global precipitation response in contrast with the regional response over India. The response to global warming from carbon dioxide increases precipitation both globally and regionally, whereas the cooling response to sulfate aerosol leads to a reduction in precipitation in both cases. The response to black carbon aerosols, however, is a global decrease but a regional increase of precipitation over India. The mechanism is increased atmospheric heating driving a stronger monsoon circulation and stronger low-level winds. This intensification of the Indian monsoon is, somewhat surprisingly, stronger for global black carbon emissions than when the emissions are limited to those from the Asian region. Overall, our study presents heterogeneity in precipitation responses at both global and regional levels and the potential underlying physical processes under a variety of climate forcings that would be useful in designing further model experiments with higher spatial resolution. We apply a local ensemble transform Kalman smoother (LETKS) in combination with the global aerosol–climate model ECHAM–HAM to estimate aerosol emissions from POLDER-3/PARASOL (POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) observations for the year 2006. We assimilate aerosol optical depth at 550 mnm (AOD550), the Ångström exponent at 550 and 865 nm (AE550–865), and single-scattering albedo at 550 nm (SSA550) in order to improve modeled aerosol mass, size and absorption simultaneously. The new global aerosol emissions increase to 1419 Tgyr-1 (+ 28 %) for dust, 1850 Tgyr-1 (+ 75 %) for sea salt, 215 Tgyr-1 (+ 143 %) for organic aerosol and 13.3 Tgyr-1 (+ 75 %) for black carbon, while the sulfur dioxide emissions increase to 198 Tgyr-1 (+ 42 %) and the total deposition of sulfates to 293 Tgyr-1 (+ 39 %). Organic and black carbon emissions are much higher than their prior values from bottom-up inventories, with a stronger increase in biomass burning sources (+ 193 % and + 90 %) than in anthropogenic sources (115 % and 70 %). The evaluation of the experiments with POLDER (assimilated) and AERONET as well as MODIS Dark Target (independent) observations shows a clear improvement compared with the ECHAM–HAM control run. Specifically based on AERONET, the global mean error in AOD550 improves from - 0.094 to - 0.006, while absorption aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (AAOD550) improves from - 0.009 to - 0.004 after the assimilation. A smaller improvement is also observed in the AE550–865 mean absolute error (from 0.428 to 0.393), with a considerably higher improvement over isolated island sites at the ocean. The new dust emissions are closer to the ensemble median of AEROCOM I, AEROCOM III and CMIP5 as well as some of the previous assimilation studies. The new sea salt emissions have become closer to the reported emissions from previous studies. Indications of a missing fraction of coarse dust and sea salt particles are discussed. The biomass burning changes (based on POLDER) can be used as alternative biomass burning scaling factors for the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) inventory distinctively estimated for organic carbon (2.93) and black carbon (1.90) instead of the recommended scaling of 3.4 (Kaiser et al., 2012). The estimated emissions are highly sensitive to the relative humidity due to aerosol water uptake, especially in the case of sulfates. We found that ECHAM–HAM, like most of the global climate models (GCMs) that participated in AEROCOM and CMIP6, overestimated the relative humidity compared with ERA5 and as a result the water uptake by aerosols, assuming the kappa values are not underestimated. If we use the ERA5 relative humidity, sulfate emissions must be further increased, as modeled sulfate AOD is lowered. Black carbon (BC; i.e. soot) absorbs radiation and contributes to glacier retreat over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). A lack of comprehensive understanding of the actual mixing state leads to large controversies in the climatic simulation of soot over the TP. In this study, ground-based sampling, electron microscopy analyses, and theoretical calculations were used to investigate the interactions among the liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS), soot redistribution in secondary particles, and fractal dimension (Df) of soot particles on the eastern rim of the TP. We found that more than half of the total analysed particles were soot-containing particles. One-third of soot-containing particles showed a core shell structure that probably formed the LLPS phenomenon after long-range transport. Particle size and the ratio of organic coating thickness to soot size are two of the major possible factors that likely induce soot redistribution between organic matter and inorganic aerosols in individual particles. The Df sequence is ranked as externally mixed soot (1.79±0.09)< sulfate-coated soot (1.84±0.07)< organic-coated soot (1.95±0.06). We concluded that the soot redistribution process promoted the morphological compaction of soot particles. This study indicates that soot-containing particles experienced consistent ageing processes that induced a more compact morphology and soot redistribution in the LLPS particles on the remote eastern rim of the TP. Understanding the microscopic changes in aged soot particles could further improve the current climate models and evaluations of BC's radiative impacts on the eastern TP and similar remote air. Aerosol mixtures, which are still unclear in current knowledge, may cause large uncertainties in aerosol climate effect assessments. To better understand this research gap, a well-developed online coupled regional climate-chemistry model is employed here to investigate the influences of different aerosol mixing states on the direct interactions between aerosols and the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The results show that anthropogenic aerosols have high-level loadings with heterogeneous spatial distributions in East Asia. Black carbon aerosol loading accounts for more than 13% of the totals in this region in summer. Thus, different aerosol mixing states cause very different aerosol single scattering albedos, with a variation of 0.27 in East Asia in summer. Consequently, the sign of the aerosol instantaneous direct radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere is changed, varying from − 0.95 to + 1.50 W/m2 with increasing internal mixing aerosols. The influence of aerosol mixtures on regional climate responses seems to be weaker. The EASM circulation can be enhanced due to the warming effect of anthropogenic aerosols in the lower atmosphere, which further induces considerable aerosol accumulation associated with dynamic field anomaly, decrease in rainfall and so on, despite aerosol mixtures. However, this interaction between aerosols and the EASM will become more obvious if the aerosols are more mixed internally. Additionally, the differences in aerosol-induced EASM anomalies during the strongest and weakest monsoon index years are highly determined by the aerosol mixing states. This study examines hilly terrain's effect on black carbon (BC) dispersion. The apportionment of distinct sources obtained by a two-component mixing model (Aethalometer: AE-33) using improved radiative transfer equations showed the dominance of traffic-derived black carbon (BCFF) emissions in the study region. The AERMOD was used to model BC emissions from moving traffic as a line source and parking lot as area source using observational and WRF-processed meteorology for the winter (January to March 2020). The model results showed that the BC levels substantially vary with local meteorological conditions, traffic volume, and composition. The hilly terrain obstructs the winds and develops a negative pressure loading to a vacuum on the other side of the hills, which promotes the accumulation of emissions, causing high BC concentrations. The pockets of higher concentration were seen at the locations where steep slopes were associated with low winds (<1 m s−1) and hill fogs. The AERMOD model, after statistical evaluation against the observational datasets, has been applied to study the reduction in BCFF concentrations due to the implementation of Indian emission norms as mitigation measures, i.e., BS-IV (equivalent to Euro 4) and BS-VI (equivalent to Euro 6). It was found that the BCFF concentrations for BS-IV and BS-VI reduced by 35% and 75%, respectively. We reported the seasonal variations of columnar aerosol optical depth (AOD) and equivalent black carbon (EBC) from December 2018 to November 2019 in semi-arid station, Anantapur. Furthermore, using the two-component source apportionment model, we estimated the contribution of biomass burning (EBCbb) and fossil fuel combustion (EBCff) to the total EBC. The high AOD values at shorter wavelengths indicate that particle loading occurs primarily in fine mode aerosols. The high AOD500 was observed in the month of May (0.77 ± 0.19), and the low was in July (0.32 ± 0.11). The seasonal highest mean AOD500 was noticed during the summer (0.67 ± 0.12) followed by winter (0.49 ± 0.01), post-monsoon (0.43 ± 0.15) and monsoon (0.43 ± 0.17). The results revealed that both local emissions and long-range transported aerosols are primarily responsible for a significant spectral and temporal variability in AOD. In winter, the Angstrom exponent (α) was relatively high, whereas it was low in monsoon season. The mass concentrations of EBC, EBCff and EBCbb showed a strong diurnal and seasonal variations with in the study period. The highest and lowest EBC was noticed in winter and monsoon that is 2.64 ± 0.32, and 0.625 ± 0.16 μg/m3, respectively. The percentage contribution of annual mean EBC was 52.13% during the day and 47.86% during the night, respectively. With an average of 91.48%, EBCff contributes the most to total EBC during the study period. Furthermore, during all seasons, the hourly mean concentrations of EBC showed good agreement (r = 80) between the observed (Aethalometer) and MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective Study for Research and Applications). According to the MERRA-2 winds and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the prevalence of fine mode particles throughout winter and summer is connected with continental air masses originating from India's central and northern regions. Renewable biomass plays a crucial role in transitioning toward climate-friendly heating sources; however, not without its collateral damage in terms of the disproportionately high effects on local air quality. The associated proliferation of residential heating appliances around the world, including developed regions like Europe, where an estimated 70 million are housed, does not appear to be abating. Here, we identify super self-concentrating ambient pollution events whereby solid-fuel residential heating haze is infused with a hitherto unaccounted for firelighter smoke that contributes additional adsorbing black carbon. This black carbon-organic aerosol combination results in a strong positive radiative forcing (up to 149 W m−2) and alters the boundary layer thermodynamics sufficiently so as to further suppress pollutant dilution and dispersion leading to extraordinary high submicron particulate matter (PM1: 166 µg m−3). The composition of marine aerosol is quite complex, and its sources are diverse. Across the East China Sea (ECS) and the Yellow Sea (YS), multi-dimensional analysis of marine aerosols was conducted. The characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols and gaseous pollutants were explored through in situ ship-based observation, MERRA-2 reanalysis datasets and TROPOMI data from Sentinel-5P satellite. Black carbon (BC)'s average concentration is 1.35 ± 0.78 μg/m3, with high-value BC observed during the cruise. Through HYSPLIT trajectory analysis, sources of BC were from the northern Eurasian continent, the Shandong Peninsula, the ECS and Northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO). The transport of marine sources like ship emissions cannot be ignored. According to the absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE), BC originates from biomass burning (BB) in the shortwave band (~370 nm) and from fossil fuel combustion in the longwave band (~660 nm). Organic carbon (OC), sulfate (SO42−) and BC report higher Angstrom exponent (AE) while dust and sea salt reveal lower AE, which can be utilized to classify the aerosols as being fine- or coarse-mode, respectively. OC has the highest AE (ECS: 1.98, YS: 2.01), indicating that anthropogenic activities could be a significant source. The process of biomass burning aerosol (BBA) mixed with sea salt could contribute to the decline in BBA's AE. Ship emissions may affect the distribution of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the ECS, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tropospheric NO2 over the YS has the highest value (up to 12 × 1015 molec/cm2). Stratospheric NO2 has a ladder-like distribution from north to south, and the variation gradient was lower than that in the troposphere. Carbon monoxide (CO) accumulates in the south and east of the ECS and the east of the YS, while the variation over the eastern YS is relatively frequent. Atmospheric dry deposition of black carbon (BC) is a significant but poorly understood and inadequately described process in aerosol-climate models. The 40-year detailed dry deposition velocities of hydrophilic BC over China from 1981 to 2020 were systematically studied based on the MERRA-2 reanalysis data, which hopefully will be beneficial for its applications in atmospheric systems for climate and air quality. The average dry deposition flux of hydrophilic BC over China was 0.00059 ± 0.00014 μg m−2 s−1, while its dry deposition velocity was estimated to be 0.00051 ± 0.00004 m s−1. The monthly mean dry deposition fluxes of hydrophilic BC varied nearly 1.5 fold, ranging from the lowest 0.00046 ± 0.00011 μg m−2 s−1 in August to the highest 0.00068 ± 0.00019 μg m−2 s−1 in January. The spring season had the highest mean dry deposition flux of hydrophilic BC, followed by summer and winter, whereas autumn showed relatively weaker dry deposition flux. The mean dry deposition velocities of hydrophilic BC over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Tibet Plateau were estimated to be 0.00042 ± 0.00004, 0.00042 ± 0.00004, 0.00051 ± 0.00006 and 0.00078 ± 0.00005 m s−1, respectively. The monthly and seasonal patterns of dry deposition velocities of hydrophilic BC differed from each other in different regions, and high air temperature or surface wind speed seemed to fortify dry deposition velocities of hydrophilic BC. For air quality management it is becoming increasingly important to be able to assess the quantity and properties of biomass-burning-related aerosol. Due to different chemical compositions and morphologies, black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) demonstrate diverse optical properties as well as an impact on air quality. In this study, we analyzed the chemical composition and light-absorbing properties of carbonaceous aerosol at an urban background station during the residential heating season. In addition, BC and BrC levels were assessed in six different areas in the city characterized by different predominant domestic heating systems. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and BrC attribution analysis revealed that BrC mainly consisted of biomass-burning-related organic aerosol (BBOA) (up to 95%). The mass absorption cross-section at 370 nm for BBOA factors varied between 1.41 m2g−1 and 2.63 m2g−1. The study of six different areas in the city showed that the input of BrC to the total light absorption coefficient within the city varied between 33% and 70%. In addition, the worst air quality was present in areas with numerous old wooden houses with outdated heating systems where significantly increased BC and BrC levels were observed. Wood burning stove design is improving as regulation become stricter for particulate matter emissions. This study describes results of black carbon (BC) emissions from three modern automated wood stoves when tested in common failure modes using a test protocol that included cold‐starts, high and low fuel loading densities, and use of overly large pieces of fuel. Emission sampling was performed using a dilution sampling system in tandem with an aethalometer to measure BC with high time resolution. Results show that the time‐weighted average BC emission rates were 0.91, 4.30, and 1.74 g/h for the three stoves tested (A, B, and C respectively), the values, both higher and lower than the United States 2020 certification test emission limit of 2.5 g/h. The results demonstrate good performance overall, given the rigorous nature of the testing protocol used. The aethalometer data showed that the performance was relatively poor during cold‐start, when the fuel was ignited and combusted without a coalbed, and when stoves failed to optimize air delivery due to specific loading and output conditions. During the cold‐start test section, the average BC emission rate was seven times higher than the overall average for Stove A, 10 times above the average for Stove B, and two times above the average emission rate for Stove C. Calculations of the Average Angstrom Absorption Exponent (AAE) of the exhaust aerosol showed little correlation with BC concentration. The absorption Ångström exponent (AAE)-based methods are widely used to estimate brown carbon (BrC) absorption, and the estimated BrC absorption can be significantly different from 0 even for pure black carbon (BC). However, few studies have systematically quantified the effects of BC microphysical properties. Moreover, it is still unclear under which conditions the AAE-based method is applicable. In this work, we used BC models partially coated with non-absorbing materials to calculate the total absorption. Since the total absorption is entirely from BC, the estimated BrC absorption should be 0 if the retrieval methods are accurate. Thus, the estimated BrC absorption (ABSBrC) should be the absorption from BC that is incorrectly attributed to BrC. The results show that a BC AAE of 1 can generally provide reasonable estimates for freshly emitted BC, since at this time ABSBrC is generally in the range of -3 % to 4.5 %. However, when BC aerosols are aged, ABSBrC of about 35 % could be observed. The WDA method does not necessarily improve the estimates, sometimes a negative ABSBrC of -40 % can be found for partially coated BC. By combining simulations of a global chemical transport model, this work also quantified the effects of BC microphysical properties on BrC global optical absorption aerosol depth (AAOD) estimates. The AAE = 1 method could sometimes lead to a misassigned global mean AAOD of about -0.4 – 0.5 × 10-3 if BC aerosols have a complex morphology, leading to a global mean direct radiation factor (DRF) of about -0.068 ± 0.0172 to +0.085 ± 0.0215 W/m2 from BC, which is incorrectly assigned to BrC. The WDA method does not necessarily improve the estimates. In our cases, the WDA methods based on the spherical models can lead to a range of about -0.9 – 0.05 × 10-3 of misassigned AAOD, which could lead to a global mean DRF error range of -0.153 ± 0.0387 to +0.0085 ± 0.0022 W/m2. At the regional scale, the AAE = 1 method in East Asia sometimes leads to a distributed AAOD of over 3 × 10-3, resulting in a BC DRF of about +0.51 ± 0.129 W/m2, which is incorrectly attributed to BrC. Mie theory-based WDA methods would lead to an estimated AAOD error of more than 6 × 10-3 in some regions (e.g., East Asia), resulting in an estimated misattributed DRF of +1.0 ± 0.258 W/m2. The vertical distribution of black carbon (BC), as well as its mixing state, is of great concern due to BC's strong regional climatic and environmental effects. In this study, vertical measurements were conducted through a moveable container based on a meteorological tower in the Beijing urban area during June and July. A total of 112 vertical profiles (0–240 m), including the concentrations of BC, O 3 , NO x and the optical properties of aerosols, were obtained. Based on BC concentration, the vertical profiles could be classified into four categories: uniform, gradual decrease, sharp decrease and sudden increase. The uniform type indicates strong vertical mixing with similar pollutant concentrations along the vertical direction. The gradual and sharp decrease types indicate stable vertical conditions with higher pollutant concentrations on the ground and lower concentrations at higher altitudes. Due to the strong radiation in summer, the vertical profiles exhibited a clear diurnal variation in which ∼ 80 % of profiles were uniform during the daytime and ∼ 40 %–90 % of profiles were of the gradual and sharp decrease types at night. O 3 is an exception, and its concentration generally increases with height, even under strong vertical mixing conditions. The size distribution of the BC core varied slightly along the vertical direction, and the coating thickness, denoted by the diameter ratio between the BC-containing particle and BC core (Dp/Dc), of BC increased with height under stable conditions. Although the coating thickness could increase the absorption ability with an average absorption enhancement of 1.25 at 23:00 LT (local time: UTC + 8), the vertical difference of Dp/Dc (2 %) was much lower than that of BC concentration (∼ 35 %). The vertical variation in absorption ability was mainly caused by the variation in BC concentration. In addition, O 3 and Dp/Dc occasionally increased during 06:00–08:00 but remained stable during 08:00–10:00. Vertical mixing and transportation from upper heights, such as the residual layer, could significantly influence the pollutant properties on the surface during early mornings. More than a yearlong investigation (2008-2009) was carried in Srinagar, in the North-Western folds of Himalayas, involving the estimation of Total Suspended Particulate Matter (TSPM) and different carbonaceous fractions associated with it namely, Total carbon (TC), Elemental carbon (EC), Black Carbon (BC) Organic carbon (OC), no such direct estimates were available at that time for the valley and neither have they been updated till date. The samples collected on quartz filter using high volume sampler in a time series sequence and analyzed reflected marked seasonal dependence. The variability observed in carbonaceous contents of ambient aerosols was found to be similar as generally observed from other urban areas, however the relief along with prevalent meteorology was found to have a profound impact on the concentration of TSPM as well its constituent carbonaceous fractions. The higher values of TSPM were observed during summer months and the contribution of OC to TC as well. The contribution of EC to Tc was higher during colder months, EC arising from combustion sources attributed largely to petrogenic sources (fossil fuel) could be distinctly seen to be augmented by the biomass burning during autumn and winter; also increase in the OC content mainly starting in spring and continuing through to summer can be to attributed to active biogenic sources. The mean mass concentrations of black carbon (BC), biomass burning (BC)bb, and fossil fuel combustion (BC)ff have been estimated during March–May 2020 (during the COVID-19 outbreak) and March–May 2019 at a semiarid region of Agra over the Indo-Gangetic basin region. The daily mean mass concentration of BC in 2020 and 2019 was 3.9 and 6.9 µg m−3, respectively. The high monthly mean mass concentration of BC was found to be 4.7, 3.4 and 3.3 µg m−3 in Mar-2020, Apr-2020, and May-2020, respectively, whereas in Mar-2019, Apr-2019, and May-2019 was 7.7, 7.5 and 5.4 µg m−3, respectively. The absorption coefficient (babs) and absorption angstrom exponent (AAE) of black carbon were calculated. The highest mean AAE was 1.6 in the year 2020 (Mar–May 2020) indicating the dominance of biomass burning. The mean mass concentration of fossil fuel (BC)ff and biomass burning (BC)bb is 3.4 and 0.51 µg m−3, respectively, in 2020 whereas 6.4 and 0.73 µg m−3, respectively, in 2019. The mean fraction contribution of BC with fossil fuel (BC)ff was 82.1 ± 13.5% and biomass burning (BC)bb was 17.9 ± 4.3% in 2020, while in 2019, fossil fuel (BC)ff was 86.7 ± 13.5% and biomass burning (BC)bb was 13.3 ± 6.7%. The population-weighted mean concentration of BC, fossil fuel (BC)ff, and biomass burning (BC)bb has been calculated. The health risk assessment of BC has been analyzed in the form of attributable relative risk factors and attributed relative risk during the COVID-19 outbreak using AirQ + v.2.0 model. The attributable relative risk factors of BC were 20.6% in 2020 and 29.4% in 2019. The mean attributed relative risk per 10,000,000 populations at 95% confidence interval (CI) due to BC was 184.06 (142.6–225.2) in 2020 and 609.06 (418.3–714.6) in 2019. The low attributed factor and attributed relative risk in 2020 may be attributed to improvements in air quality and a fall in the emission of BC. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the whole country faced the biggest lockdown, ban of the transportation of private vehicles, trains, aircraft, and construction activities, and shut down of the industry leading to a fall in the impact of BC on human health. Overall, this was like a blessing in disguise. This study will help in future planning of mitigation and emission control of air pollutants in large and BC in particular. The Camp Fire was one of California's deadliest and most destructive wildfires, and its widespread smoke threatened human health over a large area in Northern California in November 2018. To analyze the Camp Fire influence on air quality on a 200 km distant site in Berkeley, highly time-resolved total carbon (TC), black carbon (BC), and organic carbon (OC) were measured using the Carbonaceous Aerosol Speciation System (CASS, Aerosol Magee Scientific), comprising two instruments, a Total Carbon Analyzer TCA08 in tandem with an Aethalometer AE33. During the period when the air quality was affected by wildfire smoke, the BC concentrations increased four times above the typical air pollution level presented in Berkeley before and after the event, and the OC increased approximately ten times. High-time-resolution measurements allow us to study the aging of OC and investigate how the characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols evolve over the course of the fire event. A higher fraction of secondary carbonaceous aerosols was observed in the later phase of the fire. At the same time, the amount of light-absorbing organic aerosol (brown carbon) declined with time.
