Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMSCs), multidirectional cells with self-renewal capacity, can differentiate into many cell types and play essential roles in tissue healing and regenerative medicine. Cell experiments and in vivo research in animal models have shown that BMSCs can repair degenerative discs by promoting cell proliferation and expressing Extracellular Matrix (ECM) components, such as type II collagen and protein-polysaccharides. Delaying or reversing the Intervertebral Disc Degeneration (IDD) process at an etiological level may be an effective strategy. However, despite increasingly in-depth research, some deficiencies in cell transplantation timing and strategy remain, preventing the clinical application of cell transplantation. Exosomes exhibit the characteristics of the mother cells from which they are secreted and can inhibit Nucleus Pulposus Cell (NPC) apoptosis and delay IDD through intercellular communication. Furthermore, the use of exosomes effectively avoids problems associated with cell transplantation, such as immune rejection. This manuscript introduces almost all of the BMSCs and exosomes derived from BMSCs (BMSCs-Exos) described in the IDD literature. Many challenges regarding the use of cell transplantation and therapeutic exosome intervention for IDD remain to be overcome.

In order to overcome the demerits of traditional city air terminals (CAT), a brand-new service mode based on urban mobile stations (UMS) is introduced in this article for providing the luggage check-in service in urban area. Different from CAT, for each service time period, the UMSs are located based on the real-time passenger distributions. The objectives are to improve the service quality and enhance the competitiveness of air transportation. First, the system components and operation mode of UMS are described. Second, a mathematical model is set up for locating UMSs and assigning passengers to service stations. Three aspects, including the average path length from passengers to UMSs, the maximum acceptable path length for passengers, and the maximum service capacity of a station are considered. Third, to meet the strict time requirement of the UMS system, an effective evolutionary algorithm for optimizing UMS locations in real time is further developed. In the method, the ripple-spreading algorithm is applied for solving the many-to-many path optimization problem and a two-stage adaptive genetic algorithm is utilised for efficiently locating UMSs. Finally, a test case is set up based on the city centre of Tianjin, China, and passenger source locations are obtained by surveying passengers at Tianjin Airport. The reported method is then applied to dynamically locate UMSs in Tianjin urban area and it is compared to some other existing methods to show its effectiveness and efficiency. The service quality of UMS is compared to CAT in both cases with realistic data and randomly generated data to show its advantages.

BACKGROUND The interplay between cytomegalovirus (CMV) latency and graft malfunction after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) remains poorly defined due to the complexity of clinical confounding factors. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of CMV latency on small-for-size graft injury and to get further insight on the pathogenic role of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in this process. METHODS Rat orthotopic liver transplantation with small-for-size grafts was performed in a CMV latent model developed in immunocompetent Sprague Dawley (SD) rats using Priscott strain. Post-transplant graft injury including hepatocyte damage, stellate cell activation and fibrogenesis were evaluated. Differential gene expression of HSCs in response to CMV latency was screened by cDNA microarray. Clinical validation was further conducted in human biopsies. RESULTS CMV latency aggravated hepatocyte apoptosis/necrosis in the early phase, enhanced HSC expansion and graft fibrosis during the middle-late phase in small-for-size liver grafts of the rat model. cDNA microarray mining revealed CCL19/CCR7 as one of the most noteworthy pathways bridging HSC activation and liver graft injury in the presence of CMV latency. Together with CCL19 upregulation, coherent overexpression of CCR7 in accumulated HSCs was confirmed in both rat and human CMV latent recipients. Moreover, addition of CCL19 in vitro promoted HSC migration by increasing the level of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2). CONCLUSION Our data demonstrated that CMV latency aggravated early/late phase liver graft damage and fibrogenesis via CCL19/CCR7/HSCs axis. Blockade of CMV latency-related stellate cell activation may shed light on the strategy of graft protection clinically.

In previous studies, researchers have used singing to treat respiratory function in patients with spinal cord injury. However, few studies have examined the way in which vocal training affects respiratory neural plasticity in patients with spinal cord injury. Vocal respiratory training (VRT) is a type of vocal muscle-related treatment that is often a component of music therapy (MT) and focuses on strengthening respiratory muscles and improving lung function. In this randomized controlled study, we analyzed the therapeutic effects of VRT on respiratory dysfunction at 3 months after cervical spinal cord injury. Of an initial group of 37 patients, 26 completed the music therapy intervention, which comprised five 30-minute sessions per week for 12 weeks. The intervention group (n = 13) received VRT training delivered by professional certified music therapists. The control group (n = 13) received respiratory physical therapy delivered by professional physical therapists. Compared with the control group, we observed a substantial increase in respiratory function in the intervention group after the 12-week intervention. Further, the nerve fiber bundles in the respiratory center in the medulla exhibited a trend towards increased diversification, with an increased number, path length, thickness, and density of nerve fiber bundles. These findings provide strong evidence for the effect of music therapeutic VRT on neural plasticity. Rib fracture is the most common injury in chest trauma. Most of patients with rib fractures were treated conservatively, but up to 50% of patients, especially those with combined injury such as flail chest, presented chronic pain or chest wall deformities, and more than 30% had long-term disabilities, unable to retain a full-time job. In the past two decades, surgery for rib fractures has achieving good outcomes. However, in clinic, there are still some problems including inconsistency in surgical indications and quality control in medical services. Before the year of 2018, there were 3 guidelines on the management of regional traumatic rib fractures were published at home and abroad, focusing on the guidance of the overall treatment decisions and plans; another clinical guideline about the surgical treatment of rib fractures lacks recent related progress in surgical treatment of rib fractures. The Chinese Society of Traumatology, Chinese Medical Association, and the Chinese College of Trauma Surgeons, Chinese Medical Doctor Association organized experts from cardiothoracic surgery, trauma surgery, acute care surgery, orthopedics and other disciplines to participate together, following the principle of evidence-based medicine and in line with the scientific nature and practicality, formulated the Chinese consensus for surgical treatment of traumatic rib fractures (STTRF 2021). This expert consensus put forward some clear, applicable, and graded recommendations from seven aspects: preoperative imaging evaluation, surgical indications, timing of surgery, surgical methods, rib fracture sites for surgical fixation, internal fixation method and material selection, treatment of combined injuries in rib fractures, in order to provide guidance and reference for surgical treatment of traumatic rib fractures.

Objective To describe the rationale and application of triggered EMG (T‐EMG) in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, and to explore the efficacy and safety of posterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (PPECD) in the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) under multimodal intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM). Methods This study was a retrospective cohort control study. The clinical data of 74 patients with single‐segment CSR from June 2015 to August 2018 were analyzed retrospectively, of whom 35 underwent IOM‐assisted PPECD with triggered EMG (T‐EMG group), while 39 were subjected to IOM‐assisted PPECD alone (IOM group). Operation time, hospital stay, and complications were recorded for both groups. The curative effect was evaluated according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) of neck and arm pain, Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, and modified MacNab scale. Results Operations were successful and all patients were followed up for at least 24 (average 31.77 ± 9.51) months with no patient lost to follow‐up. No significant difference was found in preoperative baseline data between the T‐EMG and the IOM group (P > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was found in the operation time between the T‐EMG (108.29 ± 11.44 min) and the IOM (110.13 ± 12.70 min) (P > 0.05) group, but the difference in hospital stay (T‐EMG: 5.66 ± 0.99 days; IOM: 7.10 ± 1.43 days) was statistically significant (P 0.05). The 1‐month postoperative JOA scores for the two groups (12.69 ± 0.76; 12.59 ± 0.82) and those at the last follow‐up (14.60 ± 0.77; 14.36 ± 0.78) were significantly different from the preoperative scores (11.09 ± 0.98; 11.05 ± 0.89) (P 0.05). One patient in the T‐EMG group developed a transient aggravation of symptoms on the first day after surgery. In the IOM group, three patients had intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and symptoms of C5 nerve root paralysis were presented in four patients following surgery. However, few studies have explored the prevalence and risk factors of i–IGT among adults in rural China. Thus, we aimed to explore the prevalence and risk factors of i–IGT among adults ≥ 50 years old in a low-income, rural population in China.Materials and Methods: Individuals aged ≥ 50 years with normal fasting plasma glucose levels were included in the final analysis. Fasting and 2-h venous blood samples were collected to assess the selected parameter measurements.Results: A total of 2175 individuals were included in this study. The i–IGT prevalence was 22.9% and significantly higher among females than among males (P< 0.05). Older age [odds ratio (OR), 1.606; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.101– 2.342; P=0.014), hypertension (OR, 1.554; 95% CI, 1.152– 2.019; P=0.004), and central obesity (OR, 1.395; 95% CI, 1.099– 1.771; P=0.006) were associated with i–IGT. Moreover, white blood cell (OR, 1.089; 95% CI, 1.009– 1.175; P=0.029), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (OR, 1.049; 95% CI, 1.020– 1.078; P=0.001), serum uric acid (OR, 1.0003; 95% CI, 1.001– 1.004; P=0.001), triglyceride (OR, 1.540; 95% CI, 1.105– 2.147; P=0.011), and alanine aminotransferase (OR, 1.012; 95% CI, 1.004– 1.021; P=0.004) levels were also linked to i–IGT in the analyzed population.Conclusion: Health promotion education and a standardized approach to managing body weight, BP, and lipid and uric acid levels would benefit this low-income population in rural China for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.Keywords: impaired glucose tolerance, prevalence, risk factors, normal fasting plasma glucose, epidemiology

Background Preoperative administration of methylprednisolone reduced circulating markers of endothelial activation. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate whether a single preoperative dose of methylprednisolone reduced the rate of postoperative delirium (POD) in older patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery and its association with the shedding of endothelial glycocalyx markers. Methods About 168 patients, aged 65–80 years and scheduled for laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, were randomized to 2 mg/kg methylprednisolone (Group M, n = 84) or equivalent dose of placebo (Group C, n = 84). The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium during the first 5 days after surgery, assessed by the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). POD severity was rated daily using CAM-Severity (CAM-S). Levels of syndecan-1, heparan sulfate, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were measured at baseline, 1 day, and 3 days after surgery. Results Compared with placebo, methylprednisolone greatly reduced the incidence of delirium at 72 hours following surgery (9 [10.7%] vs 20 [23.8%], p = .03, OR = 2.22 [95% CI 1.05–4.59]). No between-group difference was found in the cumulative CAM-S score (p = .14). The levels of heparan sulfate, syndecan-1, and TNF-α in Group M were lower than that in Group C (p < .05 and p < .01), while the level of BDNF in Group M was higher than that in Group C (p < .01). Conclusions Preoperative administration of methylprednisolone does not reduce the severity of POD, but may reduce the incidence of delirium after gastrointestinal surgery in older patients, which may be related to a reduction in circulating markers of endothelial degradation, followed by the increase of BDNF level. Endometriosis is a gynecological disease affecting 6-10% of women of reproductive age. In addition to gynecologic symptoms, endometriosis is associated with various systemic effects, including inflammation, altered body weight, and behavioral changes. Previous murine studies demonstrate that endometriosis is causally inked to increased pain sensitization, behavioral changes, and low body mass index (BMI). One possible cellular target that may mediate some of these findings is the hypocretin/orexin neurons. This neuronal system plays a role in regulating wakefulness/sleep cycles, pain perception, and appetite. We hypothesize that endometriosis alters activity level of the hypocretin/orexin (Hcrt) neuronal system. Mice underwent endometriosis induction surgeries (endo) or sham surgeries (sham) for the development of the experimental model. Immunocytochemistry was performed on harvested samples from the lateral hypothalamus, and activation levels of Hcrt cells were examined by quantifying the expression of phosphorylation of cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB) in these cells after an acute stress in sham and endo mice. Mice with endometriosis had greater Hcrt neurons activation than sham mice. Mice with endometriosis fed with high fat diet showed a lower fat/body weight and fat/lean tissue ratio compared to mice without endometriosis. There was no significant difference in food intake between sham and endometriosis mice. These results demonstrate that endometriosis is associated with low body mass and increased hypocretin/orexin activity, which could be implicated in the behavioral changes and to differences in body composition.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the role of JAK3 (Janus kinase 3) in reendothelialization after vascular injury. Methods and Results: By using mouse carotid artery wire injury and rat balloon injury model, we found that JAK3 regulates reendothelialization and endothelial cell proliferation after vascular injury. JAK3 and phospho-JAK3 levels were increased in neointimal smooth muscle cells in response to vascular injury in mice. JAK3 deficiency dramatically attenuated the injury-induced intimal hyperplasia in carotid arteries of both male and female mice. Importantly, JAK3 deficiency caused an increased rate of reendothelialization following mechanical injury. Likewise, knockdown of JAK3 in medial smooth muscle cells elicited an accelerated reendothelialization with reduced intimal hyperplasia following balloon injury in rat carotid arteries. Interestingly, knockdown of JAK3 restored the expression of smooth muscle cell contractile protein smooth muscle α-actin in injury-induced intimal smooth muscle cells while increased the proliferating endothelial cells in the intima area. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate a novel role of JAK3 in the regeneration of endothelium after vascular injury, which may provide a new strategy to enhance reendothelialization while suppressing neointimal formation for effective vascular repair from injury.

Background Approximately 10% of patients with gastric cancer (GC) have a genetic predisposition toward the disease. However, there is scant knowledge regarding germline mutations in predisposing genes in the Chinese GC population. This study aimed to determine the spectrum and distribution of predisposing gene mutations among Chinese GC patients known to have hereditary high-risk factors for cancer. Methods A total of 40 GC patients from 40 families were recruited from seven medical institutions in China. Next-generation sequencing was performed on 171 genes associated with cancer predisposition. For probands carrying pathogenic/likely pathogenic germline variants, Sanger sequencing was applied to validate the variants in the probands as well as their relatives. Results According to sequencing results, 25.0% (10/40) of the patients carried a combined total of 10 pathogenic or likely pathogenic germline variants involving nine different genes: CDH1 (n = 1), MLH1 (n = 1), MSH2 (n = 1), CHEK2 (n = 1), BLM (n = 1), EXT2 (n = 1), PALB2 (n = 1), ERCC2 (n = 1), and SPINK1 (n = 2). In addition, 129 variants of uncertain significance were identified in 27 patients. Conclusions This study indicates that approximately one in every four Chinese GC patients with hereditary high risk factors may harbor pathogenic/likely pathogenic germline alterations in cancer-susceptibility genes. The results further indicate a unique genetic background for GC among Chinese patients.

The distribution of cadmium (Cd) occurrence modes in a Naomaohu coal (NMH) and an Inner Mongolia high sulfur coal (GL) was investigated using the sequential chemical extraction method. The influence of the occurrence modes, final pyrolysis temperature, heating rate and residence time on the release behavior of Cd during the pyrolysis of two raw coals at 400–800°C in a horizontal/vertical tubular furnace was examined, respectively. The simulation of the migration and transformation of Cd under ideal conditions by FactSage software was carried out. The results show that Cd in NMH and GL is present in an organic matter state by 46% and 37%, a carbonate state by 32% and 24%, a disulfide state by 12% and 1%, and an aluminosilicate state by 10% and 38%, respectively. The distribution of occurrence modes seriously affects the volatilization behavior of Cd, in which the Cd in the organic matter state is easy to volatilize at low temperature, while those in the carbonate, aluminosilicate and sulfide state can volatilize at medium and high temperature; and reducing pyrolysis rate and extending residence time are conducive to the release of Cd. The FactSage simulation shows that Cd, CdO, Cd(OH)x and CdS are the major gaseous products of Cd during the pyrolysis of NMH and GL coal, and the difference of volatilization behavior of Cd in two kinds of coal is mainly determined by pyrolysis temperature, distribution of occurrence modes and coal rank, which are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Additional hysteretic experiments for corroded rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) columns with an axial load ratio of 0.27 were implemented. A quasi-static cyclic lateral loading with constant axial force was subjected to tests. Herein, a modified ductility factor model for corroded RC column is developed on the basis of the previous work and additional experiments. The model involves the influence of both the corrosion ratio of longitudinal rebar and the axial load ratio. A four-linear envelope curve model concerning lateral load and displacement is proposed in a combination of determination rules of the peak point and the failure strength point. The hysteretic model of corroded RC columns is developed by considering both degraded unloading stiffness and reloading stiffness on the history peak point. The hysteretic model can predict the residual life of corroded RC columns under seismic loading.

The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been extensively applied to study ischaemic stroke. This study attempted to clarify effect of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on infarct injury of MCAO rats. BMSCs were isolated and identified by staining CD29/CD44 and CD31/CD45. CX3CL1 silencing vector (pLVX-shRNA-CX3CL1) was generated and infected to BMSCs. pLVX-shRNA-CX3CL1 infected BMSCs were transplanted into brain tissue of MCAO rats. Real-time PCR was used to determine CX3CL1 expression. Infarct areas were stained with TTC to evaluate infarct size. Double-staining immunofluorescence was conducted to determine anti-inflammatory type CD206 and pro-inflammatory type tumour necrosis factor a (TNF-a) microglia. Isolated BMSCs were positively presented for CD29/CD44, and negatively for CD31/CD45. CX3CL1 was significantly lower in the BMSC + pLVX-shRNA2-CX3-CL1 group compared to the BMSCs + pLVX group (p < 0.05). According to TTC and neurological scores, MCAO rats were successfully generated. BMSCs transplantation significantly increased CD206 microglia and decreased TNF-a microglia. However, shRNA-CX3CL1-infected BMSCs remarkably reduced CD206 microglia and enhanced TNF-a microglia compared to the MCAO + BMSCs group. In conclusion, BMSCs reverse microglia from pro-inflammatory type TNF-a microglia to anti-inflammatory type CD206 microglia in the infarct region of MCAO rats (3rd to 7th days post BMSC transplantation), through triggering of CX3CL1 secretion. Therefore, the potential effects of CX3CL1 secreted by BMSCs would provide an insight for stem cell-dependent therapeutic strategies in treating ischaemic stroke-associated disorders.

Postoperative adhesive bowel obstruction (ABO) is a common complication especially in complicated appendicitis. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for ABO following appendectomy in children with complicated appendicitis, and establish a scoring model for predicting postoperative ABO and treatment option to relieve the obstruction. From December 2014 to January 2020, all files of consecutive patients with complicated appendicitis underwent appendectomy were reviewed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to screen out the risk factors of postoperative ABO, and establish a scoring model for predicting postoperative ABO and surgical relief to relieve the obstruction. Of the 780 patients, 87 (11.2%) had ABO following appendectomy, including 27 who underwent surgical relief. Age ≤ 6 years, overweight and obesity, duration of symptoms ≥ 36 h, C-reactive protein ≥ 99 mg/L, duration of operation ≥ 60 min, intraoperative peritoneal lavage, and postoperative flatus time ≥ 20 h were independent risk factors for postoperative ABO. The final scoring model for postoperative ABO included factors above, and exhibited a high degree of discrimination (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.937; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.913–0.960) corresponding to an optimal cut-off value of 6: 82.8% sensitivity, 92.6% specificity. Furthermore, the scoring model showed a sensitivity of 74.1% and a specificity of 91.7% for patients wo underwent surgical relief to relieve obstruction with the optimal cut-off value of 9. Risk factors for postoperative ABO should be taken seriously in children with complicated appendicitis. The scoring model is a novel but promising method to predict postoperative ABO and provide reference for clinical decision-making to relieve the obstruction.

“The Shi Jing’’(‘‘The Book of Poetry”） is one of the first poems in the world, including Chinese poems, from the 11th century BC to the 6th century BC. During this period, about 3 000 verses appeared, of which 305 poems were selected by Confucius. Poetic texts in “The Shi Jing’are divided into three categories: regional songs, odes, hymns. The composition of the poems uses such techniques as Fu, Bi and Xing. These poems constitute the creative source (source) of Chinese poetry. “Fu”，“Bi” and “Xing” are important artistic features of “The Shi Jing”. “Fu”” - direct narration, parallelism. “Bi” is a metaphor, comparison. “Sin” means “stimulation”， it first speaks about others, then about what the poet wants to express. Fu and Bi are the most basic techniques of expression, and Xing is a relatively unique technique in “The Shi Jing”， even in Chinese poetry in general. “The Shi Jing” is an excellent starting point for Chinese literature, which has already reached a very high artistic level from the very beginning. "The Shi Jing” affects almost all aspects of the early social life of ancient China, such as sacrifice, banquet, labor, war, love, marriage, corvee, animals, plants, oppression and resistance, manners and customs, even astronomical phenomena, etc. It became historical value for the study of that society. The overwhelming majority of the poems in “The Shi Jing”reflect the reality, everyday life and everyday experience. There is almost no illusory and supernatural mythical world in it. As the first collection of poetry in China, “The Shi Jing” laid the foundation for the lyrical and realistic tradition of Chinese literature. “The Shi Jing” also has a huge impact on the genre structure and linguistic art of Chinese literature, etc., which is a role model for writers of later generations. “The Shi Jing”has already been translated into the languages of the countries of the world. “The Shi Jing”has been influencing Chinese poetics; it has become the source of the classical realistic tradition and literature in China. Lively description is essential for historical, anthropological and sociological research. Detecting prohibited item based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is of great significance to ensure public safety. However, the natural occurrence of such prohibited items is a small-probability event, collecting enough datasets to support CNN training is a big challenge. In this paper, we propose a new method for synthesizing X-ray security image with multiple prohibited items from semantic label images basing on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Theoretically, we can use it to synthesize as many X-ray images as needed. A new generator architecture with Res2Net is presented, which is more effective in learning multi-scale features of different prohibited items images. This method is extended by establishing the semantic label library which contains 14 000 images. So we totally synthesize 14 000 X-ray security images. The experimental results show the super performance (Frechet Inception Distance (FID) score of 30.55). And we achieve 0.825 of mean average precision (mAP) with Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) for object detection, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach.

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy of percutaneous full‐endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (Endo‐TLIF) with percutaneous pedicle screws (PPSs) performed by using a visualization system with that of minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS‐TLIF) for the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Methods From June 2017 to May 2018, the data of a total of 78 patients who met the selection criteria were retrospectively reviewed and were divided into the Endo‐TLIF group (40 cases) and the MIS‐TLIF group (38 cases) according to the surgical method used. The visual analog scale (VAS) and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scale were administered preoperatively and at the 1‐week, 3‐month, and 1–2‐year follow‐ups. The fusion rate and major complications, including revision, were also recorded. Results All the patients were followed up for 24 to 34 months, with an average follow‐up of 30.7 months. The intraoperative blood loss and length of hospital stay for the Endo‐TLIF group (60.56 ± 0.36 mL, 8.12 ± 0.92 days, respectively) were statistically significantly lower than those for the MIS‐TLIF group (65.47 ± 0.91 mL, 9.66 ± 1.34 days, respectively) (P 0.05). There was no significant difference in the intervertebral altitude between the two groups at the 3‐month (11.36 ± 0.23, 11.21 ± 0.42, respectively) or final follow‐up (10.88 ± 0.64, 10.81 ± 0.39, respectively) (P > 0.05). Dural tears, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, infection, and neurologic injury did not occur. Both groups showed good intervertebral fusion at the last follow‐up. The intervertebral fusion rate was 97.5% (39/40) in the Endo‐TLIF group and 94.7% (36/38) in the MIS‐TLIF group, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups (χ 2 = 0.118, P = 0.731). At the final follow‐up, the modified MacNab's criteria were 92.5% and 89.5% between the two groups. Conclusion Endo‐TLIF with percutaneous pedicle screws (PPS) performed by using a visualization system for lumbar degenerative disease may be regarded as an efficient alternative surgery for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. Some airports construct several buildings in city centre to offer check in and other services, denoted as city air terminals, which help passengers to check in and drop off luggage closer to their residences. Multi-objective location optimization methods play an important role in planning the locations of city air terminals. The objectives are to improve passenger experience and enhance the competitiveness of air transportation. A mathematical model of this problem is introduced. The model takes three factors into accounted as the optimization objectives, including the average path length from passengers to city air terminals, the maximum tolerable distance of passengers, and the service capacity of a station. Secondly, an efficient hybrid evolutionary method is presented for efficiently optimizing the locations of city air terminals, which includes an improved ripple-spreading algorithm for solving the many-to-many path optimization problem and a genetic algorithm for optimizing the facility location problem. Finally, a case study based on a large city in China is performed to test the proposed method for locating city air terminals in urban area and to show its effectiveness and efficiency.

Natural living systems are driven by delicate protein networks whose functions are precisely controlled by many parameters, such as number, distance, orientation, and position. Focusing on regulation rather than just imitation, the construction of artificial protein networks is important in many research areas, including biomedicine, synthetic biology and chemical biology. DNA origami, sophisticated nanostructures with rational design, can offer predictable, programmable, and addressable scaffolds for protein assembly with nanometer precision. Recently, many interdisciplinary efforts have achieved the precise construction of DNA origami-based protein networks, and their emerging application in many areas. To inspire more fantastic research and applications, herein we highlight the applicability and potentiality of DNA origami-based protein networks. After a brief introduction to the development and features of DNA origami, some important factors for the precise construction of DNA origami-based protein networks are discussed, including protein-DNA conjugation methods, networks with different patterns and the controllable parameters in the networks. The discussion then focuses on the emerging application of DNA origami-based protein networks in several areas, including enzymatic reaction regulation, sensing, bionics, biophysics, and biomedicine. Finally, current challenges and opportunities in this research field are discussed.

Obesity is an important independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and many other chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the role of adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) in the development of obesity and insulin resistance. Wild-type (WT) and heterozygous ADAR1-deficient (Adar1(+/−)) mice were fed normal chow or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 wk. Adar1(+/−) mice fed with HFD exhibited a lean phenotype with reduced fat mass compared with WT controls, although no difference was found under chow diet conditions. Blood biochemical analysis and insulin tolerance test showed that Adar1(+/−) improved HFD-induced dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Metabolic studies showed that food intake was decreased in Adar1(+/−) mice compared with the WT mice under HFD conditions. Paired feeding studies further demonstrated that Adar1(+/−) protected mice from HFD-induced obesity through decreased food intake. Furthermore, Adar1(+/−) restored the increased ghrelin expression in the stomach and the decreased serum peptide YY levels under HFD conditions. These data indicate that ADAR1 may contribute to diet-induced obesity, at least partially, through modulating the ghrelin and peptide YY expression and secretion. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study identifies adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 as a novel factor promoting high-fat diet-induced obesity, at least partially, through modulating appetite-related genes ghrelin and PYY.

Drug-induced acute liver injury (DIALI) is increasingly recognized as a significant cause of acute liver injury (ALI), which is characterized by a rapid loss of hepatocyte function in patients without pre-existing liver diseases. Evaluation of corresponding biomarkers, including alanine transaminase and aspartate amino transferase, is available as a diagnostic tool for hepatotoxicity. However, these blood tests have certain limitations: (1) they are generally not available for early estimation; (2) it is difficult to visualize and identify hepatotoxicity unambiguously in real-time; and (3) the biomarkers are not unique and are usually influenced by a variety of diseases, leading to potential false results. It is of grave importance and burgeoning demand to develop an early diagnostic approach for such diseases, but the ideal toolkit remains an unresolved challenge.As an alternative, molecular optical probes (fluorescence, chemiluminescence, bioluminescence, etc.) display a lot of advantages, such as high sensitivity, noninvasive fast analysis, and real-time in situ detection. They have emerged as potent and promising tools for the biomedical study of DIALI in living system. Until now, a number of optical probes for DIALI have been reported with some great potential for clinical trials. However, most of the probes still suffer from false signals because of the limitations in clinical application, including poor selectivity, low sensitivity, and biocompatibility. One key challenge that probes face in the ALI environment is the excessive exposure to reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and diffusivity, which may lead to false-positive or negative signals.Our group has employed multiple rational approaches to engineer high-performance optical probes for DIALI. With such development, we have successfully achieved the accurate detection of DIALI with minimal false signals both ex vivo and in vivo. While marching firmly toward understanding the biogenesis and progression of DIALI, we ultimately aim at the early stage clinical diagnosis of the disease, as well as mechanism understanding for clinical trials. In this Account, we summarize and present our three new approaches for the development of high-fidelity optical probes: (1) a combined screening and rational design strategy, (2) a double-locked probe design strategy, and (3) in situ imaging based on the release of a precipitating fluorochrome strategy. Using these strategies, we have formulated probes for a range of biological species that are biomarkers of DIALI, including reactive nitrogen species (ONOO-), reactive sulfur species (H2S and H2Sn), and enzymes (LAP, MAO, and ALP). We have highlighted the rationale for our design and screening strategy and methods to achieve high-fidelity optical probes. Some recent examples of optical probes developed by our laboratory and collaborations are mainly illustrated herein. We anticipate the strategies summarized here to inspire future molecular optical probe design, to contribute to studies of the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying liver diseases, and to improve the efficiency of the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases in clinical settings.

Objective Infectious encephalitis (IE) and autoimmune encephalitis (AE) are symptomatically similar in clinic, however essentially different in pathogenesis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify specific features to distinguish the two types of encephalitis for early effective diagnosis and treatments through a comparative analysis. Methods Fifty-nine IE patients and 36 AE patients were enrolled. The patients with IE were divided into viral encephalitis (VE) and bacterial encephalitis (BE) according to the pathogens in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Patients with AE were categorized by with or without neural autoantibodies (NAAb). We further divided patients with NAAb into those with neural cell-surface antibodies (NSAbs) or intracellular antibodies (Abs). Clinical features, laboratory data, and imaging findings were compared between AE, IE, and subgroups. Results Memory deficits, involuntary movement, and seizures were relatively more commonly presenting symptoms in AE patients (p < 0.05). The positive rate of Pandy test was higher in IE patients (p = 0.007). Decreased leukocyte, erythrocyte, and platelet counts in blood were found in IE patients (p < 0.05). Lower serum calcium level was found in VE compared to BE (p = 0.027). Meanwhile, higher serum calcium level was found in patients with NSAbs compared with intracellular Abs (p = 0.034). However, higher levels of LDH in CSF were found in patients with intracellular Abs (p = 0.009). In magnetic resonance imaging, hippocampus lesions were more commonly present in patients with AE (p = 0.042). Compared with AE patients, more IE patients displayed the background electroencephalogram rhythm of slow-frequency delta (p = 0.013). Conclusion Involuntary movement and memory deficits were more specifically present in AE patients. CSF Pandy, blood routine test and hippocampus lesions detections were potential markers for distinguishing AE and IE. Further, CSF LDH, and serum calcium levels were potentially useful to distinguish subgroups of encephalitis.

Background. Estrogen is involved in the pathophysiological process of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), in which epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role. Upregulation of aquaporin (AQP) 5, which is directly activated by estrogen, has been reported to promote EMT in multiple cells. This study aimed to examine the effects of AQP5 on estrogen-induced EMT in the prostate. Methods. Normal prostate (NP) tissue samples without any histopathological changes and BPH tissue samples with pathologically confirmed hyperplasia were obtained. An EMT cell model was subsequently established by adding estradiol (E2) to RWPE-1 cells, after which AQP5 knockdown was performed. Tissue morphological and immunohistochemical features were examined using hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the expression of AQPs, estrogen receptors, and EMT-related proteins. Cell proliferation was assessed and supernatants were collected for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) concentrations. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to assess protein expressions in RWPE-1 cells. Results. Introduction Neck pain is a common condition that leads to serious pain, disability, and increased healthcare costs worldwide. Pharmacotherapy is one of the most common strategies to reduce neck pain in patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the real-world pattern of drugs prescribed for patients with neck pain in the USA. Methods Data on individuals who reported current neck pain in the 2009−2010 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and with a history of persistent pain for at least 6 weeks or 3 months were extracted from the NHANES database. Those included in the study were divided into three groups based on the duration of pain: the without neck pain group (Group A); subacute group (Group B) with a history of 6 weeks of neck pain; and the chronic neck pain group (Group C) with a history of 3 months of neck pain. The use and duration of medication prescribed for Group A, B, and C patients were compared. Results The analysis revealed that opioid use was significantly more prevalent in the subacute and chronic neck pain group than in the without neck pain group (Group A) (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 4.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.07–8.52 and aOR 7.00, 95% CI 4.32–11.33, respectively). The factors strongly associated with higher opioid use included older age, low education level, and low family income. In the chronic neck group, opioids, followed in decreasing order of frequency by acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-infammatory drugs, were the most common analgesics used in combination with other analgesics. Conclusion Our analysis of the data shows that the long-term excessive use of opioids and the underutilization of other analgesics are two major issues in the treatment of neck pain in the USA. Possible improvements include improved education of patients by healthcare professionals on the use of opioids and more consideration given to non-pharmacotherapy options. Our results reveal the potential problem in pharmacotherapy choices for neck pain treatment and may help improve the current clinical practice in the USA and other countries.

Objective To investigate the association of graft steatosis with long-term outcome, and to elucidate the mechanism of steatotic graft injury in adult living donor liver transplantation. Summary background data The utilization of steatotic graft expands the donor pool for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). However, it remains controversial due to its high morbidity and mortality. Elucidating the mechanism of steatotic graft injury is crucial to develop therapeutic strategies targeting at graft injury and to further expand the donor pool. Methods Five hundred and thirty patients receiving LDLT were prospectively included for risk factor analysis and outcome comparison. Rat orthotopic liver transplantation, in vitro functional experiments and mouse hepatic ischemia/reperfusion models were established to explore the mechanisms of steatotic graft injury. Results We identified that graft with > 10% steatosis was an independent risk factor for long-term graft loss after LDLT (HR 2.652, p = 0.001), and was associated with shorter cancer recurrence-free survival and acute phase liver injury. Steatotic graft displayed distinct mitochondrial dysfunction, including membrane, calcium and energy homeostasis dysregulation. Specifically, the mitochondrial biogenesis was remarkably down-regulated in steatotic graft. Inhibition of AMPK-PGC1α axis impaired mitochondrial biogenesis and was lethal to fatty hepatocyte in vitro, whereas reactivation of AMPK promoted PGC1α-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis and attenuated liver injury via restoring mitochondrial function in animal model. Conclusions We provided a new mechanism that compromised AMPK-PGC1α axis exacerbated steatotic graft injury in LDLT by dysregulating mitochondrial homeostasis through impairment of biogenesis.

BACKGROUND In the monitored anesthesia care (MAC) setting for awake craniotomy (AC), maintaining airway patency in sedated patients remains challenging. This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the validity of the below-epiglottis transnasal tube insertion (the tip of the tube placed between the epiglottis and vocal cords) and the nasopharyngeal airway (simulated by the above-epiglottis transnasal tube with the tip of the tube placed between the epiglottis and the free edge of the soft palate) with respect to maintaining upper airway patency for moderately sedated patients undergoing AC. METHODS Sixty patients scheduled for elective AC were randomized to receive below-epiglottis (n = 30) or above-epiglottis (n = 30) transnasal tube insertion before surgery. Moderate sedation was maintained in the pre- and post-awake phases. The primary outcome was the upper airway obstruction (UAO) remission rate (relieved obstructions after tube insertion/the total number of obstructions before tube insertion). RESULTS The UAO remission rate was higher in the below-epiglottis group [100% (12/12) vs 45% (5/11); P = .005]. Background This was a meta-analysis of double-blind, randomized controlled trials that examined the therapeutic effects and tolerability of adjunctive fluvoxamine versus placebo for schizophrenia. Methods The Review Manager, Version 5.3, was used to analyze data. Results Five double-blind randomized controlled trials (N = 284) covering 145 patients on adjunctive fluvoxamine and 139 patients on placebo were included in the analyses. Meta-analyses of total psychopathology, and negative, positive, and depressive symptoms did not show significant differences between the fluvoxamine and placebo groups. Two studies examined the effects of adjunctive fluvoxamine on cognitive functioning with mixed findings. Fluvoxamine was superior over placebo in lessening weight gain and metabolic abnormalities. Although fluvoxamine led to more discontinuation, no significant group differences were found regarding adverse drug reactions. Conclusions There was inconsistent evidence for the therapeutic effect of adjunctive fluvoxamine on cognitive functions and preliminary evidence for alleviating metabolic syndrome caused by clozapine. More studies are needed to explore further the effectiveness of adjunctive fluvoxamine for schizophrenia.

Vertical observations of ozone play vital roles in understanding various atmospheric chemical processes in the boundary layer, particularly in winter. In this study, we attempted to measure vertical profiles of boundary layer ozone in the winter of 2018 over the Yangtze River Delta region of China, using a hexacopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. A commercial portable ozone monitor mounted in a thermal insulation box was attached to the UAV platform to conduct vertical ozone measurements. The results showed that the UAV platform could effectively capture the vertical variations of boundary layer ozone in wintertime. During the field campaign, surface ozone was in relatively low levels due to weak photochemical production. In the daytime, the ozone was well mixed within the boundary layer. At nighttime, uniform vertical distribution patterns and stratified distribution patterns were frequently obtained in ozone profiles below 500 m. Backward trajectories and wind profiles were used to investigate the horizontal and vertical transport of ozone. The stratified distribution patterns of ozone were closely associated with strong contemporary advection transport of ozone that was accompanied by enhanced winds aloft. Besides, strong wind shear enhanced the downward transport of ozone from the free troposphere into the boundary layer, leading to uniform vertical distribution patterns of boundary layer ozone and the elevated nocturnal surface ozone levels. The results of this study could provide insights into the understanding of the spatial variations and evolution patterns of boundary layer ozone in wintertime and constructing suitable boundary layer schemes in atmospheric chemical models.

The role of forkhead box O3 (FOXO3) as a tumor suppressor gene and its association with the human lifespan is well documented. However, several studies have indicated that high expression of FOXO3 is also significantly associated with tumorigenesis. The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical significance of FOXO3 in the development and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). mRNA expression data of FOXO3 from The Cancer Genome Atlas database was analyzed through the UALCAN online tool to compare the expression of FOXO3 between HCC and normal liver tissues. Subsequently, the expression of FOXO3 at the protein level was investigated via immunohistochemical staining of 314 HCC and 150 non-cancerous liver tissue samples. The association between protein expression and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed using the χ2 test, and the effect of FOXO3 expression on survival was assessed via Kaplan-Meier analysis. The expression of FOXO3 mRNA was significantly higher in HCC in comparison with healthy tissues. High FOXO3 protein expression was revealed in 43/150 non-cancerous liver tissues, and in 238/314 HCC samples. A significant association was demonstrated between FOXO3 expression and metastasis, Tumor-Node-Metastasis stage, Edmondson grade, α-fetoprotein level and overall survival. In conclusion, the high expression of FOXO3 predicts a poor prognosis in patients with HCC, indicating this protein as a potential therapeutic target in HCC.

A growing body of evidence indicates that atherosclerosis is correlated with cerebral small vessel disease and contributes to cognitive decline. This study aimed to explore the characteristics and contributions of intracranial hemodynamics and carotid atherosclerosis to cognitive dysfunction in subjects with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD). Notably, 44 patients with SIVD, 30 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from our longitudinal MRI study for AD and SIVD (ChiCTR1900027943). The cerebral mean flow velocity (MFV) and pulsatility index (PI) of both anterior and posterior circulations, artery plaque, and lumen diameter in carotid arteries were investigated using transcranial Doppler and carotid ultrasound, respectively. Their correlations with cognitive function were analyzed in patients with dementia. Decreased MFV and increased PI were found in patients with SIVD and AD. Patients with SIVD showed lower MFV and higher PI in the bilateral posterior cerebral arteries compared to patients with AD. Increases in lumen diameter, number of arteries with plaque, and total carotid plaque score were found in patients with SIVD. The Mini-Mental State Examination score was positively correlated with the MFV and negatively correlated with the PI of most major cerebral arteries, while it was negatively correlated with the lumen diameter of the common carotid artery, number of arteries with plaque, and total carotid plaque score in patients with dementia. There were also correlations between these parameters of some arteries and memory and executive function. Our results provide additional evidence suggesting that the pathological changes in macrovascular structure and function are correlated with cognitive impairment in dementia patients with SIVD and to a lesser extent AD.

The placenta may play a key role in the activation of inflammation and initiation of insulin resistance (IR) during gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) pathogenesis. Interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18, regulated by NLR family pyrin domain containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, are important inflammatory cytokines in the initiation of maternal IR during GDM. However, the mechanism responsible for the regulatory of NLRP3 inflammasome in placenta remains unknown. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exerts anti-inflammatory function partially via suppressing the activation of the NLPR3 inflammasome. The present study aimed to investigate the role of NLRP3 inflammasome, H2S synthetase cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) and cystathionine-β-synthetase (CBS) in placenta in the pathogenesis of GDM. Clinical placenta samples were collected from pregnant women with GDM (n=16) and healthy pregnant women at term (n=16). Western blot analysis was performed to detect the protein expression levels of NLRP3, cleaved caspase-1, CBS and CSE in the placenta samples. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to assess the correlation between NLRP3 inflammasome and H2S synthetase. Human placental cells were cultured and treated with different concentrations of NaHS (0, 10, 25 and 50 nmol/l) or L-cysteine (0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mmol/l). In addition, western blot analysis was performed to detect the protein expression levels of NLRP3 and cleaved caspase-1, while ELISA was performed to measure the production of IL-1β and IL-18 in the culture media. The results demonstrated that the expression levels of NLRP3 and cleaved caspase-1 increased, while the expression levels of CBS and CSE decreased in the placenta samples. In addition, the expression levels of NLRP3 and cleaved caspase-1 were inversely correlated with the expression levels of CBS and CSE. Notably, NaHS and L-cysteine significantly suppressed the expression levels of NLRP3 and cleaved caspase-1, and the production of IL-1 and IL-18 in human placental cells. Taken together, the results of the present study suggest that H2S synthetase deficiency in placenta may contribute to excessive activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in GDM.

The quality and application of super-resolution fluorescence imaging greatly lie in the properties of fluorescent probes. However, conventional fluorophores in a cellular environment often suffer from low brightness, poor photostability, and short Stokes shift (BDQF-6 exhibits around twofold greater brightness (ε × Φ = 6.6 × 104 L·mol− 1·cm− 1) and Stokes shift (56 nm) than its parental fluorophore, Rhodamine B. Importantly, in Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy, BDQF-6 derived probe possesses a superior photostability and thus renders threefold more frames than carbopyronine- and JF608-based probes, known as photostable fluorophores for STED imaging. More BDQF-6 derivatives were developed next, allowing us to perform wash-free organelles (mitochondria and lysosome) staining and protein labeling with ultrahigh signal-to-noise ratios (up to 106 folds) in confocal and STED microscopy of live cells, or two-photon and 3D STED microscopy of fixed cells. Furthermore, the strategy was well generalized to different types of dyes (pyronin, rhodol, coumarin, and Boranil), offering a new class of bright and photostable fluorescent probes with long Stokes shift (up to 136 nm) for bioimaging and biosensing.

Objective: This study aimed to detect whether optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) can be used to dynamically monitor intracranial pressure (ICP). Methods: Adult patients being monitored for invasive ICP on day one after hospital admission were included. For each patient, ONSD was first measured in the supine position, then at the 30° head-up position. The dynamic test was conducted in 16 patients. The ONSD was measured in the supine position once a day for three continuous days (day one to day three after admission).Results: The ONSD and ICP values obtained in the supine position on admission were strongly correlated (r of 0.799). When patients changed their position from supine to the 30° head-up position, the ICP and ONSD values decreased correspondingly. However, the change in ICP did not correlate well with the change in ONSD (r of 0.358). In the dynamic test, a good agreement between ICP and ONSD only existed in three (18.75%) patients. In addition, three patients had completely different profiles for ICP and ONSD.Conclusions: The results suggest that the changes in ONSD and ICP values were not correlated well after dynamic observation. Measurement of ONSD may not be a suitable tool to dynamically monitor ICP.

Introduction The characteristics of Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA) based on its radiological classification is still unclear. Objectives To investigate the clinical significances of ABPA patients with central bronchiectasis (ABPA‐CB) by different radiological classifications of mucus plugs. Methods ABPA‐CB patients from a pulmonary hospital between 2008 and 2015 were retrospectively included and analysed. According to the chest imaging in their first visit to physician, the ABPA‐CB patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of high‐attenuation mucus (HAM) or low‐attenuation mucus (LAM). The primary endpoint was ABPA relapse within 1 year since the glucocorticoid withdrawal. The relationship between the imaging findings and the clinical prognosis was illuminated. Results A total of 125 ABPA patients were analysed in this study. Compared to the LAM group, the HAM group presented higher blood eosinophil cells counts, higher rates of Aspergillus detection isolated in sputum and expectoration of brownish‐black mucus plugs, more affected lobes and segments, poorer pulmonary function and higher rate of relapse. Conclusions The clinical characteristics and prognosis of ABPA‐CB patients are closely related to its radiological phenotype of mucus plugs in the central bronchiectasis. Clinicians should promote a diversity of personalized treatments for different patients with different radiological characteristics.

In this article, a 220-GHz direct detection polarimetric receiver is reported. This polarimetric receiver is intended for sensing of the microphysical properties of cloud ice in the earth’s upper atmosphere. In the article, we report the measured RF performance, including RF gain of approximately 35 dB per channel and integrated noise figure of the receiver. The noise figure is measured to be 5.1 dB for the horizontally polarized channel and 5.4 dB for the vertically polarized channel. The receiver measures only 1.8 cm $\times3.0$ cm $\times6.4$ cm and has a total regulated dc power consumption of 520 mW. This article represents the first 220-GHz polarimetric direct detection receiver and is enabled by an advanced 25-nm indium phosphide (InP) HEMT monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology.

In distributed Internet of Things (IoTs), channel hopping (CH) is an effective scheme for neighbor nodes to achieve blind rendezvous over common available channels and to establish communication links. When nodes are unaware of each other’s local clocks and the global channels and have no pre-assigned CH strategies or identifiers (IDs), it is particularly challenging to guarantee blind rendezvous within a finite period of time, which has not been solved yet by using only one radio. In this paper, we propose a novel quaternary-encoding-based CH (QECH) algorithm to tackle the above issue. The QECH algorithm encodes a randomly selected channel into a quaternary string according to the 6B/8B encoding. We also append a common prefix string as well as the randomly selected channel before the quaternary string to guarantee overlaps in the asynchronous scenario. For all kinds of quaternary digits, we construct four mutually co-prime numbers to enumerate all possible combinations of the common available channels. We theoretically analyze the deterministic rendezvous principle and the upper bounded rendezvous latency of the QECH algorithm. We also verify the effectiveness of the QECH algorithm through extensive simulations. Evaluation results show the superiority of the QECH algorithm in terms of rendezvous latency.

Background Oligomeric amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) is associated with dysfunctional neuronal networks and neuronal loss in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ischemic postconditioning protects against post-ischemic excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory process that have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of AD. Evaluating the roles of ischemic postconditioning in oligomeric Aβ-induced neurotoxicity and underlying signal events may provide potential strategy for medical therapy in AD. Objectives The aim of the present study was to explore whether and how a brief ischemic postconditioning protects against Aβ neurotoxicity in rat hippocampus. Methods Oligomeric Aβ25-35 (20 nmol/rat) or Aβ1-42 (5 nmol/rat) was infused by intracerebroventricular injection in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Ischemic postconditioning, a brief episode of global brain ischemia (3 min), was conducted at 1, 3, or 7 days after Aβ treatment, respectively. Results A brief ischemic postconditioning reduced neuronal loss and inhibited the activation of MLK3, MKK3/6, and P38MAPKs in rat hippocampal CA1 and CA3 subfields after Aβ oligomer infusion. An N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist amantadine, but not non-NMDA receptor antagonist CNQX, reversed the MLK3-MKK3/6-P38MAPK signal events and beneficial effect of ischemic postconditioning on neuronal survival. Such reversion was also realized by NVP-AAM077, a GluN2A-subunit-selective NMDA receptor antagonist. Moreover, posttreatment with low doses of NMDA (5 nmol-40 nmol/rat) suppressed the Aβ-induced P38MAPK signaling and imitated the neuroprotection of ischemic postconditioning against Aβ neurotoxicity. Conclusions Ischemic postconditioning provides neuroprotection against Aβ neurotoxicity by moderate upregulation of NMDA receptor signaling, especially GluN2A-containing NMDA receptor pathway, and thereafter downregulation of MLK3-MKK3/6-P38MAPK signal events.

Prolactinoma is a common subtype of pituitary tumors. Dopamine receptor agonists are the preferred treatment for prolactinoma; however, with this therapy, drug resistance often occurs. In our previous work, we found that partial resistant prolactinomas showed increased fibrosis and that the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway mediated fibrosis and was involved in drug resistance. Additionally, the success of surgery is known to be heavily influenced by the consistency of the pituitary adenoma. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to clarify the mechanisms of fibrosis in prolactinoma. Using high-throughput sequencing for analysis of microRNAs, we found that miR-93-5p was significantly upregulated in prolactinoma samples with a high degree of fibrosis compared with that in samples without fibrosis. Furthermore, we found that miR-93-5p was negatively correlated with the relative expression of Smad7 and positively correlated with the relative expression of TGF-β1 in clinical prolactinoma samples. In addition, luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-93-5p could downregulate the Smad7 gene, an important inhibitor of the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway, and activate TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling-mediated fibrosis in a feed-forward loop. Moreover, miR-93-5p could enhance the drug resistance of prolactinoma cells by regulation of TGF-β1/Smad3-dependent fibrosis. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that miR-93-5p may be a potential therapeutic target for inhibiting fibrosis and reducing drug resistance in prolactinoma cells.

Glioma is a commonly diagnosed brain tumor that shows high mortality rate. Despite the great advancement of cancer therapy in recent years, chemotherapy is still an important approach for treatment of glioma. However, long-term chemotherapy usually causes serious side effects or complications. It is desirable to take strategies to enhance the efficacy of current chemotherapy. In the present study, we observed obvious upregulation of miR-374a in glioma cells. More importantly, we found that knockdown of miR-374a was able to enhance the etoposide-induced cytotoxicity against glioma cells. Mechanically, we demonstrated that FOXO1 was the target of miR-374a in glioma. Treatment with miR-374a inhibitor induced overexpression of FOXO1, and thus promoted the expression of Bim and Noxa. Since Bim and Noxa act as key proapoptotic proteins in mitochondrial apoptosis, miR-374a inhibitor was able to enhance the etoposide-induced apoptosis pathway in glioma.

“No technology, no finance” has been the consensus in banking industry. Under the background of financial technology (Fintech), how to select an appropriate technology company to cooperate for the banks has become a key. The technology company selection can be regarded as a kind of multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) problems. The probabilistic linguistic term set (PLTS) is a useful tool to express decision makers’ (DMs’) evaluations in the technology company selection. This paper develops a new method for MAGDM with PLTSs. Firstly, the possibility degree and range value of PLTSs are defined. Then a possibility degree algorithm is designed for ranking PLTSs. An Euclidean distance measure between PLTSs is presented and extended to probabilistic linguistic matrices. Based on Archimedean t-norm and s-norm, some new operational laws for PLTSs are defined and some desirable properties are discussed. Then, a generalized probabilistic linguistic Hamacher weighted averaging (GPLHWA) operator and a generalized probabilistic linguistic Hamacher ordered weighted averaging (GPLHOWA) operator are developed. Some useful properties for these operators are investigated in detail. Combined with the subjective weights of DMs, the DMs’ weights are determined by the adjusted coefficients. Using the GPLHWA operator, the collective decision matrix is obtained by aggregating all the individual decision matrices. By maximizing the total weighted square possibility degree, a multi-objective program is constructed to derive the attribute weights. The ranking order of alternatives is generated by integrating ELECTRE and TOPSIS. Thereby, a new method is put forward for MAGDM with PLTSs. A Fintech example is analyzed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The sensitivity analysis and comparative analyses are conducted to illustrate its advantages.

Traffic emissions are a major contributor to urban atmospheric pollution. The wind fields also play an important role in the dispersion of air pollutants from the traffic emissions. However, the effects of different regional wind fields on the diffusion patterns of traffic-emitted fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in urban areas are still unclear and lack quantified measurements. To provide guidance to urban planning and design, as well as urban governance and management, it is especially important to identify the extent to which wind fields affect the diffusion of traffic-emitted particles. To understand the effect, field measurements and numerical simulations were conducted in this study. The field measurements mainly focused on collecting three-dimensional (3D) distributions of concentrations of traffic-emitted particles in a student dormitory zone at a university using instrumented unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The collected PM 2.5 measurements were used to verify and calibrate numerical models. Then, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to track the progress of pollutant dispersion and evaluate its relationship to urban forms. The effects of different wind directions (northwest and southeast) on the distribution and deposition of the traffic-emitted particles in the residential area were studied under different wind velocity conditions (1 m s −1, 5 m s−1 and 20 m s−1). As efficient observation platforms, the UAVs employed in the study allowed the capture of the 3D variations in the distributions of atmospheric pollutants in urban areas. The result provides a better understanding of the dispersion of atmospheric pollutants in a specific urban built environment under different wind fields, which can support urban governance and planning and design practice leading to effective mitigation of traffic-induced air pollution in urban areas.
