The Egyptian word seshen (“water lily,” a cognate of the Hebrew name Susanna, written with hieroglyphs depicting a door bolt, a garden pool, and water), may have inspired the setting of the Theodotion form of Daniel 13:1–27. This may constitute a novel type of “bilingual visual paronomasia,” and point to an Egyptian source of the details of Susanna’s bath, absent in the earliest (Old Greek) form of the biblical text of Daniel.

Due to the high lactic acid levels and the contractility of the muscle soft-tissue hydatid disease is unusual even in endemic areas, and skeletal muscle involvement is extremely rare. Here we discuss an extremely unusual and rare case of hydatid disease found in the medial aspect of the soleus muscle in 46 years old female. MRI imaging is essential for identification and differential diagnosis.

Background: Hydatid cyst is a common zoonotic condition in endemic areas. Intraventricular hydatid cyst is a rare entity with less than 50 cases published in literature. Floating water lily sign (also called Camalote sign) is very rare in intracranial hydatid cysts. Only a single case report of this sign exists in literature in intraventricular hydatidosis suggesting rupture of hydatid cyst leading to CSF dissemination and frequent poor outcome. Case Description: This case report describes the successful management of a 5-year-old child who presented with signs and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure due to large intraventricular hydatid cyst in the right frontal horn, and magnetic resonanace imaging of the brain showed hydatid cyst with typical camalote sign. Conclusion: Although very rare, the presence of camalote sign in intraventricular cysts is very categorical in establishing preoperative diagnosis of hydatid cyst, especially in endemic areas.

This paper considers 2.5D printing in a number of ways: by exploring the relationship between textural appearance of objects as seen in the real world and how these are interpreted by artists and rendered as paintings and drawings. This is significant in order to gain deeper insights into the appearance of texture in both realworld and computer-based image processing. Secondly as a practical understanding and development of methods for the application of texture or 2.5D printing, in which the authors have worked on the development of algorithms that can translate pictorial statements as reproducible textured images. It departs from halftoning methods (dots, pixels, pattern screens), and presents vector based (non-photographic rendering methods and autographic) methods for image generation. We also present recent developments on the application of vector driven methods to drive brushes, pens and other artists' tools to create reproducible artworks.

As the higher education sector experiences the impact of globalisation and declining public funding, sustainability remains a compelling issue for educators to address at an institutional level and more broadly, for future societies. Within this context, this paper examines the role landscape can play as a platform for Education for Sustainability. Understanding the term Education for Sustainability to be holistic, systemic, connective and ecological rather than content specific, the paper outlines the genesis of landscape as a formal learning environment, and then through case studies reviews the efficacy of landscape as an agent for an integrated pedagogy towards sustainable literacy.

Es lag nahe, fur das Leitbild des Entwurfs regelmasige Strukturen technisch zu interpretieren, die in der Manaus alles umgebenden Natur vorkommen. Arena da Amazonia, Manaus. The basic and efficient new Stadium in Manaus, inaugurated in March 2014, forms the centre part of a large sports complex. For the design of a stadium, situated in one of the most important hubs of eco tourism in South America, a technical interpretation of natural structures have been performed. It seemed to be obvious to interpret technically all the regular structures which can be found in the Manaus completely surrounding nature. The giant water lily Victoria Regia, a perfect bird’s nest or a local basket woven from palm leafs, everything can be interpreted. The result is the now completed intelligent diamond-shaped steel grid shell structure, which is covered at roof and facade by in the equatorial sun brightly shining membrane panels (Figs. 1 and 2).

Only a few cases of intraventricular hydatid cysts have been described. The camalote or water lily sign is described when there is detachment of the endocyst membrane, resulting in a floating appearance like a water lily. This sign has been described most commonly in hepatic cysts. Here, we describe the camalote sign in an iatrogenically ruptured intraventricular hydatid cyst. Rupture of an intraventricular hydatid cyst poses the threat of widespread dissemination and is described in our case.

Dogu ve Guneydogu Anadolu bolgesi basta olmak uzere Turkiye hastalik icin endemiktir. On yasinda erkek hasta bir haftadan beri olan ates, oksuruk ve kusma nedeniyle basvurdu. Humans are coincidental intermediate hosts in the lifecycle of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus (the cause of this disease), the definitive hosts of which are dogs and herbivorous animals. Turkey, primarily the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolian regions, is endemic for the disease. A 10-year-old male patient presented to our hospital with complaints of fever, cough and vomiting over the last week. The patient’s chest X-ray revealed a typical water lily sign, and he was operated with the diagnosis of hydatid cyst. On post-operative day 20, piperacilin-sulbactam therapy was initiated, since cavity infection developed in the area from which the cyst had been removed. At the end of the 14-day medical treatment, a significant improvement was observed in the chest radiography. This case is presented to draw attention to the importance of monitoring patients closely for possible post-operative complications in pulmonary hydatid cyst disease. (J Pediatr Inf 2013; 7: 72-5)

This paper takes water quality as an ethnographic subject. It looks at how water quality monitors in Boston make sense of the quality of water through mundane engagement with three non-human beings who they encounter during their monitoring activities: herring, bacteria and water lily. Each of these organisms suggests a different understanding of water quality for the monitors and poses a dilemma. Water quality monitors who contribute to the production of water quality data come to know water quality as through direct interactions with these beings, mediated by both sensorial experience and laboratory data. These experiences, at the same time, confuse and redraw relationships between science, water flows, non-human vitality, including that of invasive species, and people.

Human cysticercosis is caused by the larval form of Taenia solium (T. solium) and is a condition more commonly seen in tropical countries. The infestation can present with varied symptoms depending upon the site of infection, e.g. intramuscular, subcutaneous, intracerebral, or elsewhere. Diagnosing cysticercosis, although fairly easy, becomes challenging in unusual cases. Unplanned excisions can lead to catastrophic complications.

Hydatid disease should always be kept in mind for the differential diagnosis of cystic soft-tissue tumors, even without specific findings.

The French impressionist Claude Monet (1840–1926) is best remembered for the iconic paintings of his garden and water lily pond in Giverny (Figures 1 & 2). In his 60s, Monet started to develop bilateral age-related cataracts (or nuclear sclerosis), which would eventually affect his work dramatically. In 1913, Monet travelled to London to consult the German ophthalmologist Richard Liebreich, who had been appointed chair of ophthalmology at St Thomas’ Hospital. Pharmacy is one of the oldest professions. There is a lot of information about this profession in several history of medicine works. Many valuable books about medicine and pharmacy were written in Anatolia which has an important historical background. Shifa al-Askam and Deva al-Alam has an important place in the various medical works written in the period of old Anatolian Turkish language. The book is written by a famous physician in his Celâl al-Dın Hızır known as Hadjı Pasha who lived between the second half of the 14th century and beginning of the 15th century. The meaning of its title is healing of diseases and treatment of pains. Its first and second chapters consist of theoretical and practical knowledge. The third and fourth chapters give the diseases and treatments. The preparation and effects of some syrups like filtered rose syrup, water lily syrup, violet syrup, orange syrup, lemon syrup, sandalwood syrup, silk syrup, apple syrup, quince syrup, mulberry syrup, sweet pomegranate syrup, sour pomegranate syrup and grape syrup are given in the book. In this study, the syrup formulas in the book were investigated one by one. Despite the opinion, prevalent today both in academic and non-academic quarters, that philosophy is a thing of the past, a thing to be found exclusively in the textbooks of intellectual history, the love of wisdom is flourishing like never before. Having thrown off the straight-jackets of metaphysical reasoning, living thought turns towards corporeity stamped by finitude and sexual difference, to the world around us, to the rhythms of the earth, and to a wealth of non-Western philosophical traditions.

The teaching image depicts sections of CT chest showing water lily sign and serpent sign. In the diagnosis of pulmonary hydatid disease, these signs are pathognomonic, these must be corroborated clinically, and early interventions should be done to avoid rupture of cysts leading to complications.

Primary multiple intracerebral echinococcosis is a very rare disorder particularly in children. In this case report we discuss the details of clinical presentation and management in a young child. We also highlight for the first time non-iatrogenic 'water lily' appearance of the lesion on computed tomography of the head.

Hydatid disease (HD) is a common parasitic infestation in some developing countries. Hydatid disease may affect many organs in the body, but the most affected are the liver and lungs. Hepatic and pulmonary HD is relatively easier to diagnose because of the frequency of pathognomic features and its order in the differential diagnosis list. When HD is located in uncommon sites, it is difficult to recognize even in endemic areas. The "water-lily sign" is a pathognomic sign for HD and mostly described especially after puncture or percutaneous treatment of the cyst. In this case, we observed the water-lily sign in spinal HD, which was not described before for spinal cases but for soft tissues.

There are 3 radiologic signs considered diagnostic of ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst (PHC): perivesicular pneumocyst, double-domed arch, and water lily. Apart from these, every localized radiologic density seen in any patient more than 3 years of age in an endemic area should be looked on as a possible ruptured hydatid cyst (HC). Nevertheless, situations in which the diagnosis of ruptured PHC is difficult are far from being rare in countries of high endemicity. Thus a preliminary bronchoscopy is a perfectly justifiable step in the diagnostic work-up. Herein, we report 3 selected cases of Iraqi patients with ruptured PHC in whom definitive diagnoses were made with the use of the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB).

Primary hydatidosis of muscle is very rare and can cause a variety of diagnostic problems, especially in the absence of typical radiologic findings. This is the report of a case of primary intramuscular hydatid cyst in a 35-year-old woman, who presented with a 1-year history of a painless lump in the distal left thigh. The authors document the pathognomonic water-lily sign that has not previously been reported in a case of intramuscular hydatid disease.

Echinococcosis (or hydatid disease) is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus or Echinococcus alveolaris. It continues to be endemic in developing countries including India. Liver is the most common organ involved but the parasite can affect any organ in the body. A 45 year old lady who presented with abdominal pain was subjected to ultrasonography and MRI of the abdomen which showed the characteristic “water lily sign” of hydatid cyst. Patient underwent pericystectomy, and on followup screening ultrasound has remained free of disease recurrence.

Different types of cells have been imaged with the atomic force microscope. The morphology of the archaebacterium Halobacterium halobium in its dry state was revealed. On a leaf of the small Indian tree Lagerstroemia subcostata a stoma was imaged. The lower side of a water lily leaf was imaged in water showing features down to 12 nm. Finally, fixed red and white blood cells were imaged in buffer showing features down to 8 nm. The images demonstrate that atomic force microscopy can provide high-resolution images of cell surfaces under physiological conditions.

The grey scale ultrasound features of liver hydatid disease have been evaluated on 65 surgically proven cysts in 38 patients. The majority of cysts showed the well-known ultrasound pattern of simple cysts. However, a minority of lesions were either multicystic or gave the appearance of a cyst within a cyst. Occasionally cysts showed a feature which we have called “the ultrasonographic water lily sign”. Hydatid sand was also occasionally seen in the most dependent portion of hydatid cysts. We have noted that if a hydatid cyst becomes secondarily infected these typical ultrasound patterns are lost and the ultrasound diagnosis may then become more difficult.
