Background Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proposed as a possible method for remediating age-associated cognitive decline in the older adult population. While tDCS has shown potential for improving cognitive functions in healthy older adults, stimulation outcomes on various cognitive domains have been mixed. Methods A systematic search was performed in four databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsychInfo. Search results were then screened for eligibility based on inclusion/exclusion criteria to only include studies where tDCS was applied to improve cognition in healthy older adults 65 years and above. Eligible studies were reviewed and demographic characteristics, tDCS dose parameters, study procedures, and cognitive outcomes were extracted. Reported effect sizes for active compared to sham group in representative cognitive domain were converted to Hedges' g. Main results A total of thirteen studies involving healthy older adults (n=532, mean age=71.2+5.3 years) were included in the meta-analysis. The majority of included studies (94%) targeted the prefrontal cortex with stimulation intensity 1-2 mA using various electrode placements with anodes near the frontal region. Across all studies, we found Hedges' g values ranged from -0.31 to 1.85 as reported group effect sizes of active stimulation compared to sham. Conclusion While observed outcomes varied, overall findings indicated promising effects of tDCS to remediate cognitive aging and thus deserves further exploration. Future characterization of inter-individual variability in tDCS dose response and applications in larger cohorts are warranted to further validate benefits of tDCS for cognition in healthy older adults.

PurposeThere is little information available regarding the cage diameter that can provide the most rigid construct reconstruction after total en bloc spondylectomy (TES). The aim of this study was thus to determine the most appropriate titanium mesh cage diameter for reconstruction after spondylectomy.MethodsA finite element model of the single level lumbar TES was created. Six models of titanium mesh cage with diameters of 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5 of the caudad adjacent vertebra, and 1/1 of the cephalad vertebra were tested for construct stiffness. The peak von Mises stress (MPa) at the failure point and the site of failure were measured as outcomes. A cadaveric validation study also conducted to validate the finite element model.ResultsFor axial loading, the maximum stress points were at the titanium mesh cage, with maximum stress of 44,598 MPa, 23,505 MPa, 23,778 MPa, and 16,598 MPa, 10,172 MPa, 10,805 MPa in the 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, and 1/1 diameter model, respectively. For torsional load, the maximum stress point in each of the cages was identified at the rod area of the spondylectomy site, with maximum stress of 390.9 MPa (failed at 4459 cycles), 141.35 MPa, 70.098 MPa, and 88.972 MPa, 42.249 MPa, 15.827 MPa, respectively. A cadaveric validation study results were coincided with the finite element model results.ConclusionThe most appropriate mesh cage diameter for reconstruction is 1/1 the diameter of the lower endplate of the adjacent cephalad vertebra, due to its ability to withstand both axial and torsional stress. According to the difficulty of large size cage insertion, a cage diameter of more than half of the upper endplate of the caudad vertebrae is acceptable in term of withstand stress. A cage diameter of 1/3 is unacceptable for reconstruction after total en bloc spondylectomy.

Background White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are estimated to occur in greater than 63% of older adults over the age of 60 years. WMH identified in the T2-weighted FLAIR images can be combined with T1-weighted images to enhance individualized current flow models of older adults by accounting for the presence of WMH and its effects on delivered tES current in the aging brain. Methods Individualized head models were derived from T1-weighted images of 130 healthy older adults (mean = 71 years). Lesions segmented from FLAIR acquisition were added to individualized models. Current densities were computed in the brain and compared between models with and without lesions. Main results Integrating WMH into the models resulted in an overall decrease (up to 7%) in median current densities in the brain outside lesion regions. Changes in current density and total lesion volume was positively correlated (R2 = 0.31, p Conclusions Incorporating WMH into individualized models may increase the accuracy of predicted tES current flow in the aging brain.

Due to the instability and irregular of national electric power suppled to residence sector in Iraq for long term history, attracted researchers interest to strive for solutions, and associated challenge dry and very hot summer season in Iraq on air conditioning application, A test room full size prototype was constructed in Baghdad, its size 33.5m3, the room is built from very good thermal insulation Autoclave Aerated Concrete AAC with white panted Concrete roof, test room is exposed to solar radiation during entire day, thermal energy shifted by time using thermal energy storage TES containing PCM, PCM is soft paraffin its phase inversion temperature (29 to 27)°C, thermal energy was shifted from night timing by cooling down TES (Discharging PCM) to peak time 11:00 am to 02:00 pm, the testes were carried out over entire summer season April to October, the results showed thermal energy can shift to by any quantity and time based on mass of PCM and enthalpy, electrical energy saved at peak time 52.5% of total power spent over season 2.7KW/day, Only 27% of electric energy utilized to discharge PCM during night, about 43% of heat lose is sourced from exposed roof, melting and solidification of PCM temperature must be within indoor comfort range 23 to 28 ˚C to release or absorb the latent heat 41kJ/kg.

Purpose Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) is a novel treatment approach for patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The aim of our study was to observe changes in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) that would be attributed to TES treatment. Methods A total of 73 eyes were included: 43 eyes of 22 subjects (11 ♀, 11 ♂) suffering from RP were examined at baseline (BL), after first stimulation (TS), 1 week (1W), and 6 months (6M) after treatment initiation and were compared with 30 control eyes of 15 subjects (8 ♀, 7 ♂). TES was performed simultaneously on both eyes for 30 min weekly. OCTA scans of 9 × 15 mm were recorded with a PLEX Elite 9000 swept-source OCTA device (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena). Vascular density metrics such as perfusion density (PD) and vessel density (VD) were calculated automatically for the macular area by using standardised extended early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) grids centred around the fovea. In addition, the capillary perfusion density (CPD) and the capillary flux index (CFI) of the peripapillary nerve fibre layer microvasculature in all four quadrants of an annulus centred at the optic disc were measured. All parameters were determined over all retinal layers and separately for the superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP). ANOVA-based linear mixed-effects models were calculated with SPSS®. Results Throughout the course of TES treatment, the macular VD and PD of all retinal layers in all subsections showed a slight decrement without reaching statistical significance, also when analysed separately in the SCP and DCP (p > 0.08). In analogy, the average CPD and CFI also presented with a slight decrement (p > 0.20). However, when compared with controls, most OCTA parameters showed a significant decrement (p p Conclusion Vascular density metrics in the macular region and the peripapillary microvasculature appear to remain unaffected by continuous TES treatment within a period of 6 months.

Introduction: Transcranial electrical (TES) and magnetic stimulation (TMS) are both used for assessment of the motor function of the spinal cord in horses. Muscular motor evoked potentials (mMEP) were compared intra-individually for both techniques in five healthy horses. mMEPs were measured twice at increasing stimulation intensity steps over the extensor carpi radialis (ECR), tibialis cranialis (TC), and caninus muscles. Significance was set at p < 0.05. To support the hypothesis that both techniques induce extracranially elicited mMEPs, literature was also reviewed.Results: Both techniques show the presence of late mMEPs below the transcranial threshold appearing as extracranially elicited startle responses. The occurrence of these late mMEPs is especially important for interpretation of TMS tracings when coil misalignment can have an additional influence. Mean transcranial motor latency times (MLT; synaptic delays included) and conduction velocities (CV) of the ECR and TC were significantly different between both techniques: respectively, 4.2 and 5.5 ms (MLT TMS --MLT TES ), and -7.7 and -9.9 m/s (CV TMS -CV TES ). TMS and TES show intensity-dependent latency decreases of, respectively, -2.6 (ECR) and -2.7 ms (TC)/30% magnetic intensity and -2.6 (ECR) and -3.2 (TC) ms/30V. When compared to TMS, TES shows the lowest coefficients of variation and highest reproducibility and accuracy for MLTs. This is ascribed to the fact that TES activates a lower number of cascaded interneurons, allows for multipulse stimulation, has an absence of coil repositioning errors, and has less sensitivity for varying degrees of background muscle tonus. Real axonal conduction times and conduction velocities are most closely approximated by TES.Conclusion: Both intracranial and extracranial mMEPs inevitably carry characteristics of brainstem reflexes. To avoid false interpretations, transcranial mMEPs can be identified by a stepwise latency shortening of 15-20 ms when exceeding the transcranial motor threshold at increasing stimulation intensities. A ring block around the vertex is advised to reduce interference by extracranial mMEPs. mMEPs reflect the functional integrity of the route along the brainstem nuclei, extrapyramidal motor tracts, propriospinal neurons, and motoneurons. The corticospinal tract appears subordinate in horses. TMS and TES are interchangeable for assessing the functional integrity of motor functions of the spinal cord. However, TES reveals significantly shorter MLTs, higher conduction velocities, and better reproducibility.

Background Varying treatment outcomes in transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) recipients may depend on the amount of current reaching the brain. Brain atrophy associated with normal aging may affect tES current delivery to the brain. Computational models have been employed to compute predicted tES current inside the brain. This study is the largest study that uses computational models to investigate tES field distribution in healthy older adults. Methods Individualized head models from 587 healthy older adults (mean = 73.9years, 51–95 years) were constructed to create field maps. Two electrode montages (F3-F4, M1-SO) with 2 mA input current were modeled using ROAST with modified codes. A customized template of healthy older adults, the UFAB-587, was created from the same dataset and used to warp individual brains into the same space. Warped models were analyzed to determine the relationship between computed field measures, brain atrophy and age. Main results Computed field measures were inversely correlated with brain atrophy (R2 = 0.0829, p = 1.14e-12). Field pattern showed negative correlation with age in brain sub-regions including part of DLPFC and precentral gyrus. Mediation analysis revealed that the negative correlation between age and current density is partially mediated by brain-to-CSF ratio. Conclusions Computed field measures showed decreasing amount of tES current reaching the brain with increasing atrophy. Therefore, adjusting current dose by modifying tES stimulation parameters in older adults based on degree of atrophy may be necessary to achieve desired stimulation benefits. Results from this study may inform future tES application in healthy older adults.

The current projects of future X-rays space telescopes foresee high resolving power transition edge sensor (TES) micro-calorimeters arrays as focal plane instrument. In order to full exploit their sensitivity in the space environment, they need an anticoincidence detector to reject the background due to cosmic charged particles. High-energy protons (> 150 MeV) and other charged particle may release in the X-ray calorimeter, the same energy of the X-rays sources under observation. We report the description of the last prototype based on TES calorimeter where a 1-cm2 silicon chip is used as both substrate and absorber. The readout is made of 96 iridium/gold TESs uniformly distributed on its surface and parallel wired. In this paper, we will describe the design, with the preliminary phonon dynamics simulation, the fabrication, of first demonstration model for the ATHENA space telescope project.

The ATHENA observatory is the second large class ESA mission to be launched on 2031 at L2 orbit. One of the two onboard instruments is X-IFU, a TES-based kilo-pixel array able to perform simultaneous high-grade energy spectroscopy (FWHM 2.5 eV@7 keV) and imaging over the 5' field of view. The X-IFU sensitivity is degraded by primary particle background of both solar and galactic cosmic ray (GCR) origins, and by secondary electrons produced by primaries, interacting with the materials surrounding the detector: These particles cannot be distinguished by the scientific photons, thus degrading the instrument performance. Results from studies regarding the GCR component performed by Geant4 simulations address the necessity to use background reduction techniques to enable the study of several key science topics. This is feasible by combining an active Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC) and a passive electron shielding to reach the required residual particle background of 0.005 cts/cm2/s/keV inside the 2-10 keV scientific energy band. The CryoAC is a four-pixel detector made of Si-suspended absorbers sensed by a network of IrAu TESes and placed at a distance < 1 mm below the TES array. Here we will provide an overview of the CryoAC program, starting with some details on the background assessment having impacts on the CryoAC design; then, we continue with its design concept including electronics and the Demonstration Model results, to conclude with programmatic aspects.

Miniaturization of electronics devices is often limited by the concomitant high heat fluxes (cooling load) and maldistribution of temperature profiles (hot spots). Thermal energy storage (TES) platforms providing supplemental cooling can be a cost-effective solution, that often leverages phase change materials (PCM). Although salt hydrates provide higher storage capacities and power ratings (as compared to that of the organic PCMs), they suffer from reliability issues (e.g., supercooling). “Cold Finger Technique (CFT)” can obviate supercooling by maintaining a small mass fraction of the PCM in a solid state for enabling spontaneous nucleation. Optimization of CFT necessitates real-time forecasting of the transient values of the melt-fraction. In this study, the artificial neural network (ANN) is explored for real-time prediction of the time remaining to reach a target value of melt-fraction based on the prior history of the spatial distribution of the surface temperature transients. Two different approaches were explored for training the ANN model, using: (1) transient PCM-temperature data, or (2) transient surface-temperature data. When deployed in a heat sink that leverages PCM-based passive thermal management systems for cooling electronic chips and packages, this maverick approach (using the second method) affords cheaper costs, better sustainability, higher reliability, and resilience. The error in prediction varies during the melting process. During the final stages of the melting cycle, the errors in the predicted values are ~5% of the total time-scale of the PCM melting experiments.

Background. Regulatory clinical trials are required to ensure the continued supply and deployment of effective antimalarial drugs. Patient follow-up in such trials typically lasts several weeks as the drugs have long half-lives and new infections often occur during this period. "Molecular correction" is therefore used to distinguish drug failures from new infections. The current WHO-recommend method for molecular correction uses length-polymorphic alleles at highly diverse loci but is inherently poor at detecting low density clones in polyclonal infections. This likely leads to substantial underestimates of failure rates, delaying the replacement of failing drugs with potentially lethal consequences. Deep sequenced amplicons (AmpSeq) substantially increase the detectability of low-density clones and may offer a new "gold standard" for molecular correction. Methods. Pharmacological simulation of clinical trials was used to evaluate the suitability of AmpSeq for molecular correction. We investigated the impact of factors such as the number of amplicon loci analysed, the informatics criteria used to distinguish genotyping 'noise' from real low density signals, the local epidemiology of malaria transmission, and the potential impact of genetic signals from gametocytes. Results. AmpSeq greatly improved molecular correction and provided accurate drug failure rate estimates. The use of 3 to 5 amplicons was sufficient, and simple, non-statistical, criteria could be used to classify recurrent infections as drug failures or new infections. Conclusions. These results suggest AmpSeq is strongly placed to become the new standard for molecular correction in regulatory trials, with its potential extension into routine surveillance once the requisite technical support becomes established.

Background Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is a popular method to modulate brain activity by sending a weak electric current through the head. Despite its popularity, long-term effects are poorly understood. Objective We wanted to test if anodal tES immediately changes cerebral responses to visual stimuli, and if repeated sessions of tES produce plasticity in these responses. Methods We applied repeated anodal tES, like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), but pulsed (8 s on, 10 s off), to the visual cortex of mice while visually presenting gratings. We measured the responses to these visual stimuli in the visual cortex using the genetically encoded calcium indicator GCaMP3. Results We found an increase in the visual response when concurrently applying tES on the bone without skin (epicranially). This increase was only transient when tES was applied through the skin (transcutaneous). There was no immediate after-effect of tES. However, repeated transcutaneous tES for four sessions at two-day intervals increased the visual response in the visual cortex. This increase was not specific to the grating stimulus coupled to tES and also occurred for an orthogonal grating presented in the same sessions but without concurrent tES. No increase was found in mice that received no tES. Conclusion Our study provides evidence that tES induces long-term changes in the mouse brain. Results in mice do not directly translate to humans, because of differences in stimulation protocols and the way current translates to electric field strength in vastly different heads.

Background: Working memory decline has been associated with normal aging. The frontal brain structure responsible for this decline is primarily located in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Our previous neuroimaging study demonstrated a significant change in functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) and left ventrolateral PFC (VLPFC) when applying 2 mA tDCS in MRI scanner during an N-Back task. These regions were part of the working memory network. The present study is the first study that utilizes individualized finite element models derived from older adults’ MRI to predict significant changes of functional connectivity observed from an acute tDCS application. Methods: Individualized head models from 15 healthy older adults (mean age = 71.3 years) were constructed to create current density maps. Each head model was segmented into 11 tissue types: white matter, gray matter, CSF, muscle, blood vessels, fat, eyes, air, skin, cancellous, and cortical bone. Electrodes were segmented from T1-weighted images and added to the models. Computed median and maximum current density values in the left DLPFC and left VLPFC regions of interest (ROIs) were correlated with beta values as functional connectivity metrics measured in different timepoint (baseline, during stimulation) and stimulation condition (active and sham). Background This study compared the biomechanics of artificial pedicle fixation in spine reconstruction with a 3-dimensional (3D)-printed prosthesis after total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) by finite element analysis. Methods A thoracolumbar (T10–L2) finite element model was developed and validated. Two models of T12 TES were established in combination with different fixation methods: Model A consisted of long-segment posterior fixation (T10/11, L1/2) + 3D-printed prosthesis; and Model B consisted of Model A + two artificial pedicle fixation screws. The models were evaluated with an applied of 7.5 N·m and axial force of 200 N. We recorded and analyzed the following: (1) stiffness of the two fixation systems, (2) hardware stress in the two fixation systems, and (3) stress on the endplate adjacent to the 3D-printed prosthesis. Results The fixation strength of Model B was enhanced by the screws in the artificial pedicle, which was mainly manifested as an improvement in rotational stability. The stress transmission of the artificial pedicle fixation screws reduced the stress on the posterior rods and endplate adjacent to the 3D-printed prosthesis in all directions of motion, especially in rotation. Conclusions After TES, the posterior long-segment fixation combined with the anterior 3D printed prosthesis could maintain postoperative spinal stability, but adding artificial pedicle fixation increased the stability of the fixation system and reduced the risk of prosthesis subsidence and instrumentation failure.

High energy-intensive industries, including steel, chemicals, cement, and aluminium, contribute to about 75% of the industrial emissions of Carbon dioxide globally and expelling large amounts of unrecovered waste heat into the atmosphere. Yet there has been a challenge of studies that are conducted on recovering waste heat in the aluminium industry especially in cast-house facilities due to technical difficulties such as energy fluctuations in mass flow rate and temperature. In this study, waste heat to power system is designed to generate power and freshwater in a cast-house facility with 18 furnaces by evaluating three methods in which the temporal waste heat from holding furnaces can be damped and exploited. These methods are: (1) implementing a temporal air injection, (2) an optimization method for furnaces operation time shift, and (3) integrating sensible thermal heat storage. Organic Rankine Cycle is used for the waste heat to power conversion. The appropriate thermal energy storage design and a thermodynamic model of an Organic Rankine Cycle are investigated using a temporal flue gas data that is collected onsite from three furnaces. Reverse Osmosis technology is used to produce water using the generated electricity. Results show that sensible heat thermal energy storage is the most suitable technology for damping the waste heat. By utilizing waste heat from 18 re-melting furnaces, a net power output of 323 kW can be produced to operate a Reverse Osmosis plant supplying 2419 m3 of fresh water daily, saving up to 2000 metric tons of Carbon dioxide emissions annually. This study gives a comprehensive approach in dealing with temporal waste heat in aluminium furnaces for smooth cogeneration.

International audience; The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) Technical Demonstrator (TD) aiming to shows the feasibility of the combination of interferometry and bolometric detection. The electronic readout system is based on an array of 128 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors cooled at 350mK readout with 128 SQUIDs at 1K controlled and amplified by an Application Specific Integrated Circuit at 40K. This readout design allows a 128:1 Time Domain Multiplexing. We report the design and the performance of the detection chain in this paper. The technological demonstrator unwent a campaign of test in the lab. Evaluation of the QUBIC bolometers and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the Noise Equivalent Power. Currently the mean Noise Equivalent Power is ~ 2 x 10-16W= p √Hz

The Athena observatory is the second large class ESA mission to be launched on early 2030’s. One of the two on board instruments is the X-IFU, which is a TES based kilo-pixels array able to perform simultaneous high grade energy spectroscopy (2.5eV@7keV) and imaging over the 5' FoV. The X-IFU sensitivity is degraded by primary particles background (bkg) of both solar and Galactic Cosmic Rays origin, and secondary electrons produced by primaries interacting with the materials surrounding the detector. The TES-array main sensor therefore needs a Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC) to veto as much as possible such particles. The required residual bkg is 0.005 cts/cm2 /s/keV in 2-10 keV energy bandwidth. The CryoAC is at present baselined as 4 pixels detector made of Silicon suspended absorbers sensed by a network of IrAu TESes, and placed at a distance < 1 mm below the TES-array. On November 2019, Athena has successfully passed the Mission Formulation Review (MFR), thus entering in Phase B. Next close goal is the MAR (Mission Adoption Review) planned in second half of 2022 where all the critical technologies must demonstrate a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) equal to 5. Here we will provide an overview of the CryoAC program advancement involving: 1) the present particle background assessment; 2) the assembly design concept and the related trade-off studies between the present baseline (4 pixels) against a monolithic solution (1 pixel); 2) the technology status (i.e., some results from the integrated chipset test; warm electronics). We will conclude with programmatic aspects.

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in the urgent need to develop and deploy treatment approaches that can minimize mortality and morbidity. As infection, resulting illness, and the often prolonged recovery period continue to be characterized, therapeutic roles for transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) have emerged as promising non-pharmacological interventions. tES techniques have established therapeutic potential for managing a range of conditions relevant to COVID-19 illness and recovery, and may further be relevant for the general management of increased mental health problems during this time. Furthermore, these tES techniques can be inexpensive, portable, and allow for trained self-administration. Here, we summarize the rationale for using tES techniques, specifically transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), across the COVID-19 clinical course, and index ongoing efforts to evaluate the inclusion of tES optimal clinical care.

Objective To compare the spinal stability with different fixation methods after thoracic TES using finite element analysis Methods The spinal finite element model was established from a healthy volunteer, and the validity was verified. The models of T8 thoracic total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) with and without artificial vertebral body were established combination with different fixation methods: the first was long segment fixation with fixed segments T5–7, T9–11; the second was short segment fixation with fixed segments T6–7, T9–10; the third was modified short segment with a pair of vertebral body screws on T7 and T9 added on the basis of short segment fixation. The motions of each model in standing state were simulated in software. The range of motion (ROM) and internal fixation stress changes were analyzed. Results When anterior support was effective, the three fixation methods could effectively maintain the stability of the spine. However, when anterior support failed, the ROM of the long segment fixation group and the short segment fixation group in the flexion-extension directions was significantly higher than that of when the anterior support existed, while the modified short segment fixation group had no significant changes. Meanwhile, the stress of internal fixation in the long segment fixation group and the short segment fixation group were greatly increased. However, there were no significant changes in modified short segment fixation group. Conclusion After TES, the presence of the thoracic cage gives partial anterior stabilization. When the anterior support failed, the modified short segment fixation method can provide better stability.

In this paper, we present beam pattern tests performed on the SWIPE multi-mode bolometric detector pixel assembly. A 20-mm-aperture horn is coupled to a large detector absorber (10 mm diameter) with a TES sensor located on the side. The pixel assembly has been tested at the bolometer base temperature of 340 mK, inside a custom cryogenic test bed, looking at a Gunn oscillator (128 GHz) located in the far field. We developed a custom cryogenic neoprene absorber, in addition to the stack of standard metal meshes low-pass filters, to reduce the background on the detector at a level similar to the one expected in flight, allowing to measure the main beam of the pixel assembly. The measured FWHM is 21$$^{\circ }$$, slightly narrower than the expected one (24$$^{\circ }$$), due to vignetting produced by the filters stack.

Chemical storage systems are a promising innovative route to overcome the issue of the solar irradiation storage, resulting as cost effective and with high energy density. A main problem with these kinds of materials is to design a synthesis method for preparing stable reactive structures, presenting at the same time a high volumetric charging/discharging enthalpy. At this purpose, a size controlled spinel was produced, characterized and investigated regarding its thermophysical and kinetics properties. The obtained powder presents an average diameter between 100 and 200 µm and an energy density of 133 J/g and an experimental test was carried out to verify the spinel morphology stability under thermal cycles. The specific heat is similar to other structured chemical storage system and makes the spinel feasible to be used also as sensible accumulation medium. Despite the relatively high particles size, and the expected small exposed reactive area, the charging, and especially discharging reaction rates resulted particularly favourable and comparable with the reported behaviour of micrometric powders. The particularly simple preparation method plus the cost effectiveness of the precursors leads to a quite convenient expected cost for the storage material, absolutely similar to commercially available accumulation systems.

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a putative treatment for depression, has been proposed to affect peripheral metabolism. Metabolic products from brain tissue may also cross the blood–brain barrier, reflecting the conditions in the brain. However, there are no previous data regarding the effect of tDCS on circulating metabolites.\ud Objective: To determine whether five daily sessions of tDCS modulate peripheral metabolites in healthy adult men.\ud Methods: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial involved 79 healthy males (aged 20–40 years) divided into two groups, one receiving tDCS (2 mA) and the other sham stimulated. The anode was placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the cathode over the corresponding contralateral area. Venous blood samples were obtained before and after the first stimulation session, and after the fifth stimulation session. Serum levels of 102 metabolites were determined by mass spectrometry. The results were analysed with generalised estimating equations corrected for the family-wise error rate. In addition, we performed power calculations estimating sample sizes necessary for future research.\ud Results: TDCS-related variation in serum metabolite levels was extremely small and statistically non-significant. Power calculations indicated that for the observed variation to be deemed significant, samples sizes of up to 11,000 subjects per group would be required, depending on the metabolite of interest.\ud Conclusion: Our study found that five sessions of tDCS induced no major effects on peripheral metabolites among healthy men. These observations support the view of tDCS as a safe treatment that does not induce significant changes in the measured peripheral metabolites in healthy male subjects.

Disorder of consciousness (DoC) refers to a group of clinical conditions that may emerge after brain injury, characterized by a varying decrease in the level of consciousness that can last from days to years. An understanding of its neural correlates is crucial for the conceptualization and application of effective therapeutic interventions. Here we propose a quantitative meta-analysis of the neural substrate of DoC emerging from functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) studies. We also map the relevant networks of resulting areas to highlight similarities with Resting State Networks (RSNs) and hypothesize potential therapeutic solutions leveraging network-targeted noninvasive brain stimulation. Available literature was reviewed and analyzed through the activation likelihood estimate (ALE) statistical framework to describe resting-state or task-dependent brain activation patterns in DoC patients. Results show that task-related activity is limited to temporal regions resembling the auditory cortex, whereas resting-state fMRI data reveal a diffuse decreased activation affecting two subgroups of cortical (angular gyrus, middle frontal gyrus) and subcortical (thalamus, cingulate cortex, caudate nucleus) regions. Clustering of their cortical functional connectivity projections identify two main altered functional networks, related to decreased activity of (i) the default mode and frontoparietal networks, as well as (ii) the anterior salience and visual/auditory networks. Based on the strength and topography of their connectivity profile, biophysical modeling of potential brain stimulation solutions suggests the first network as the most feasible target for tES, tDCS neuromodulation in DoC patients.

Dynamics within and between functional resting-state networks have a crucial role in determining both healthy and pathological brain functioning in humans. The possibility to noninvasively interact and selectively modulate the activity of networks would open to relevant applications in neuroscience. Here we tested a novel approach for multichannel, network-targeted transcranial direct current stimulation (net-tDCS), optimized to increase excitability of the sensorimotor network (SMN) while inducing cathodal inhibitory modulation over prefrontal and parietal brain regions negatively correlated with the SMN. Using an MRI-compatible multichannel transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) device, 20 healthy participants underwent real and sham tDCS while at rest in the MRI scanner. Changes in functional connectivity (FC) during and after stimulation were evaluated, looking at the intrinsic FC of the SMN and the strength of the negative connectivity between SMN and the rest of the brain. Standard, bifocal tDCS targeting left motor cortex (electrode ~C3) and right frontopolar (~Fp2) regions was tested as a control condition in a separate sample of healthy subjects to investigate network specificity of multichannel stimulation effects. Net-tDCS induced greater FC increase over the SMN compared to bifocal tDCS, during and after stimulation. Moreover, exploratory analysis of the impact of net-tDCS on negatively correlated networks showed an increase in the negative connectivity between SMN and prefrontal/parietal areas targeted by cathodal stimulation both during and after real net-tDCS. Results suggest preliminary evidence of the possibility of manipulating distributed network connectivity patterns through net-tDCS, with potential relevance for the development of cognitive enhancement and therapeutic tES solutions.

When meteorological data such as temperature, precipitation, weather events and economic data such as stock prices and exchange rates reach large levels, it may be necessary to analyze them with time series analysis methods. The aim of this research is to analyze the data of solar power plants with time series and make predictions for the future. To achieve this goal, solar panel data with historical depth will be collected, the collected data will be trained and predicted by various time series analysis methods and comparison will be made according to the prediction success among the related models. Methodology: With this study, using Python 3.6 and R 3.6.1, the time series estimation models were modeled with AR, ARMA, SARIMA, DES and TES, the difference between the real value and the predicted value of the data was found by the RMSE (Square Root of the Mean Square Error) method and it was seen which model has the best ability to estimate the dataset. In addition, with the trend and seasonality of the data, detailed information about the dataset was obtained with descriptive analysis and graphics. As a result, it was seen that using SARIMA or TES models in the datasets that show seasonal change in the light of the studies and estimations performed gives better results. © 2020 IEEE.

There is not a real “storage market” and the range of technical solutions for electrical storage appears to be underdeveloped. The use of electrochemical batteries seems to be the easiest and cheapest way, but some problems related to disposal, average life span and storage capacity, still put a brake on their diffusion. The micro CAES-TES (Compressed Air Energy Storage – Thermal Energy Storage) systems with small renewable energy plants for cogeneration and trigeneration represent an important development perspective thank to the reuse of the heat generated at the stage of air compression (for heating) and air expansion (for cooling). This improves the complexity of the entire system because of the heat exchange and thermal storage units must match the capacities and performances of the air compression/expansion units. The paper presents a new mathematical model for micro CAES-TES systems, implemented in Matlab software environment. The novelty is the use of air compressed energy storage in small and residential applications, a trigeneration due to reuse of heat from air compression and expansion stage, only renewable energy used. By keeping the initial investment low, the analysis is extended to the optimal system configuration and identifies key parameters that have a dominant influence on improving system efficiency and provides useful guidance for CAES-TES system design. The results show that, for an air storage volume of 4 m3, the optimal configuration is with a compression ratio of 15 splitted in two stages, charging time 5 h, mechanical storage efficiency 48%, compression air flow rate 3.73 kg/hour. The proposed system has a possible future development overall if combined with new possible scenarios of direct use of compressed air in the residential sector.

International audience; QUBIC (a Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a next generation cosmology experiment designed to detect the B-mode polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). A B-mode detection is hard evidence of Inflation in the ΛCDM model. QUBIC aims to accomplish this by combining novel technologies to achieve the sensitivity required to detect the faint B-mode signal. QUBIC uses technologies such as a rotating half-wave plate, cryogenics, interferometric horns with self-calibration switches and transition edge sensor bolometers. A Technical Demonstrator (TD) is currently being calibrated in APC in Paris before observations in Argentina in 2021. As part of the calibration campaign, the spectral response of the TD is measured to test and validate QUBIC's spectro-imaging capability. This poster gives an overview of the methods used to measure the spectral response and a comparison of the instrument data with theoretical predictions and optical simulations.

The Cryogenic AntiCoincidence Detector (CryoAC) of ATHENA X-IFU is designed to reduce the particle background of the instrument and to enable the mission science goals. It is a 4 pixel silicon microcalorimeter sensed by an Ir/Au TES network. We have developed the CryoAC Demonstration Model, a prototype aimed to probe the critical technologies of the detector, i.e. the suspended absorber with an active area of 1 cm2; the low energy threshold of 20 keV; and the operation connected to a 50 mK thermal bath with a power dissipation less than 40 nW. Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) has emerged as a non-invasive neuromodulation approach that exerts neuroprotection via diverse mechanisms, including neurotrophic, neuroplastic, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-glutamatergic, and vasodilation mechanisms. Although current studies of TES have mainly focused on its applications in ophthalmology, several lines of evidence point towards its putative use in treating depression. Apart from stimulating visual-related structures and promoting visual restoration, TES has also been shown to activate brain regions that are involved in mood alterations and can induce antidepressant-like behaviour in animals. The beneficial effects of TES in depression were further supported by its shared mechanisms with FDA-approved antidepressant treatments, including its neuroprotective properties against apoptosis and inflammation, and its ability to enhance the neurotrophic expression. This article critically reviews the current findings on the neuroprotective effects of TES and provides evidence to support our hypothesis that TES possesses antidepressant effects.

The present paper gives an overview of a new test facility for molten salt thermocline storage systems and components, which is currently being constructed at DLR in Cologne. The paper also presents DLR thermocline-filler modelling and the potential of the novel storage technology compared to the two-tank state of the art molten salt storage. In this work, an extensive parametric study is combined with an optimization routine. The approach allows a better comparison, since it finds only those storage configurations, which can directly substitute the two-tank system in a given power plant. Results show that, compared to the two-tank molten salt system, the thermocline technology achieves high exergetic efficiency at only slightly increased storage volume size and a huge decrease in salt inventory.

One possible way to further reduce levelized costs of electricity of concentrated solar thermal energy is to directly use water/steam as the primary heat transfer fluid within a concentrated collector field. This so-called direct steam generation offers the opportunity of higher operating temperatures and better exergy efficiency. A technical challenge of the direct steam generation technology compared to oil-driven power cycles is a competitive storage technology for heat transfer fluids with a phase change. Latent heat thermal energy storages are suitable for storing heat at a constant temperature and can be used for direct steam generation power plants. The calculation of the economic impact of an economically optimized thermal energy storage system, based on a latent heat thermal energy storage system with phase change material, is the main focus of the presented work. To reach that goal, a thermal energy storage system for a direct steam generation power plant with parabolic troughs in the solar field was thermally designed to determine the boundary conditions. This paper discusses the economic impact of the designed thermal energy storage system based on the levelized costs of electricity results, provided via a wide parametric study. A state-of-the-art power cycle with a primary and a secondary heat transfer fluid and a two-tank thermal energy storage is used as a benchmark technology for electricity generation with solar thermal energy. The benchmark and direct steam generation systems are compared to each other, based respectively on their annual electricity yields and their levelized costs of electricity at two different sites. A brief comparison of a passive and an active latent heat storage system is included. Finally, specific target costs for the new direct steam generation thermal energy storage system are determined based on the results of the parametric study.

Muscle motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) became a standard technique for monitoring the motor functions of the brain and spinal cord at risk during spinal and brain surgery. However, a wide range of criteria based on the percentage of amplitude decrease is used in practice. A survey of the current literature on clinical outcome parameters reveals a variety of percentages in a range of 30% to 100% (50% to 100% spinal procedures) with no consensus. The interpretation of muscle MEPs is hampered by their sensitivity to many interfering factors. Trial-to-trial MEP variations may partly be reduced by controllable parameters of which TES parameters are in the hands of the neuromonitorist. We propose an operational model based on basic neurophysiologic knowledge to interpret the characteristics of MEP-TES voltage curves and predict the influences of the location on the sigmoid voltage curve on spontaneous MEP-variations and influences of factors affecting the voltage curve. The model predicts a correlation between the slope, expressed by a gain, and variations of muscle MEP amplitudes. This complies with two case examples. The limited specificity/sensitivity of warning criteria based on the percentage of amplitude reduction can possibly be improved by developing standards for set-up procedures of TES paradigms. These procedures include strategies for desensitizing MEPs for variations of controllable parameters. The TES voltage or current is a feasible controlling parameter and should be related to the motor threshold and the onset of the supramaximal level being landmarks of MEP-voltage functions. These parameters may offer a valuable addition to multicenter outcome studies.

Background: Treatment of Alzheimer as a disease that is associated with cognitive impairment has been associated with some restrictions. Recently, researchers have focused on non-pharmacological treatments, including non-invasive stimulation of the brain by transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). Four main paradigms of transcranial electrical current include transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternative current stimulation (tACS), transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), transcranial pulse current stimulation (tPCS). The tDCS is a possible new therapeutic option for patients with cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer disease. Materials and Methods: The study was done on Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 250-270 g. to develop Alzheimer's model, the cannula was implanted bilaterally into the hippocampus. Aβ 25-35 (5μg/ 2.5µl/day) was microinjected bilaterally for 4 days. Then, an electrical stimulation paradigm was applied to the animal for 6 days. The Simons Observatory is building both large (6 m) and small (0.5 m) aperture telescopes in the Atacama desert in Chile to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation with unprecedented sensitivity. Simons Observatory telescopes in total will use over 60,000 transition edge sensor (TES) detectors spanning center frequencies between 27 and 285 GHz and operating near 100 mK. TES devices have been fabricated for the Simons Observatory by NIST, Berkeley, and HYPRES/SeeQC corporation. Iterations of these devices have been tested cryogenically in order to inform the fabrication of further devices, which will culminate in the final TES designs to be deployed in the field. The detailed design specifications have been independently iterated at each fabrication facility for particular detector frequencies. We present test results for prototype devices, with emphasis on NIST high frequency detectors. A dilution refrigerator was used to achieve the required temperatures. Measurements were made both with 4-lead resistance measurements and with a time domain Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) multiplexer system. The SQUID readout measurements include analysis of current vs voltage (IV) curves at various temperatures, square wave bias step measurements, and detector noise measurements. 1. Introduction One challenge for concentrated solar power (CSP) plants is to guarantee continuous energy output when the sun sets or is blocked by clouds. Thermal energy storage (TES) systems are key components for facing this issue. The state of the art storage system is the molten salt double-tank TES. This heat storage medium implies some disadvantages. The heat transfer fluid (HTF) is on the one hand expensive and on the other hand it demands continuous technical attention to avoid undesired malfunction, such as freezing and degradation. Furthermore, either a special salt receiver or a secondary cycle to be heated by the HTF using a heat exchanger is required, which causes a reduction in thermal efficiency. A cost-effective, high temperature and efficient performance, single-tank alternative could be provided by the regenerator-type storage based on directly heated solid media. It has a simple setup, is applicable to highest temperatures (> 1000°C) and has best prospects for a deployment in large installations. A solid media packed bed inventory is a straightforward design option, offering cost-effective solutions. Possible choices for packed bed materials are ceramic pebbles, ceramic saddles or broken natural stone. Due to its classification as waste, a high potential for further cost reduction can be achieved by using slag from steel industry. The main objective of the European project REslag is the experimental validation of the steel slag as TES material for packed bed systems. In this regard, the final results and conclusions obtained in experimental and simulation studies of a packed bed prototype that implements slag particles as TES inventory and air as HTF will be presented. The design chosen was a vertically installed and axially flowed through TES, as this was identified as the best design in an extensive evaluation phase at the beginning of the project. The work presented here includes a detailed study of the system performance under different charge, discharge and idle operation conditions. Furthermore, the simulation model for design and up scaled studies is validated by using the obtained experimental results. 2. Methodology and results In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives different experiments with two test rigs were conducted. The thermomechanical stability of the used materials was investigated by using a uniaxial compression test (UCT) bench. Here, possible inventory and insulation damages occurring during cyclic operation of the TES were determined. The thermal behavior of the slag-based TES was investigated at the HOTREG pilot plant at DLR in Stuttgart. The experimental campaign consisted of performing charge, discharge and idle operations under different temperatures up to 700°C, mass flow rates up to 650 kg h-1 and cycle times. The aim of the study was the experimental validation of the simulation model, and the construction of insulation and slag pebbles. The comparison of the experimental results to the simulation results revealed deviations below 10 %. This indicates that the simulation model is qualified for scale up studies. Overall the investigations carried out in the project REslag clearly indicates the thermal und mechanical suitability of a slag-based packed bed for the use as inventory material for regenerator-type TES in CSP plants with air as HTF. In the oral presentation, all results will be presented and summarized to a total conclusion.

This paper presents a thermo-economic analysis of a hypothesized concentrated solar power (CSP) tower plant with molten salt thermal energy storage (TES) located in the Atacama Desert in Chile with the aim of serving as input for the Solar Committee to better establish public policy programs to increase the competitiveness of CSP in Chile. The study focuses on an optimal plant in terms of size and configuration for expected conditions of the Chilean electricity market in 2018 and 2030. An ideal CSP+TES configuration to complement the electricity pool market from a grid point of view was obtained for each year. An exergetic study was performed for each configuration under assumed annual operation conditions and a thermos-economic analysis was done considering specific costs per component. Thermo-economic indicators were obtained allowing to define a priority hierarchy of specific techno-economical improvements that can be done at plant and component level to maximize the competitiveness of CSP projects in the Chilean market. A sensitivity analysis was performed obtaining the impact of efficiency improvements and capex reductions per component on the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). The maximum allowable trade-off limit for each technical improvement (capex increase or plant factor reduction) was calculated.

QUBIC (Q \& U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated in the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combine the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta province. The QUBIC detection chain consists in 2048 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) cooled to 350mK.The voltage-biased TESs are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K allowing to reach an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. The QUBIC experiment is currently being characterized in the lab with a reduced number of detectors before upgrading to the full instrument. A new approach to estimate the heat loss from thermal energy storage tank foundations is presented. Results are presented through analytical correlations based on numerical solutions for the steady-state heat conduction problem for thermal energy slab-on-grade tanks with uniform insulation. Model results were verified with other well-established benchmark problems with similar boundary conditions and validated with experimental data with excellent agreement. In addition to the TES foundation heat loss, new correlations for the maximum temperature and for the radial evolution of the temperature underneath the insulation layer are also provided, giving important information related to the tank foundation design. The correlated variables are of primordial importance in the tank foundation design because, due to the typical high operating storage temperatures, an inappropriate tank foundation insulation would lead not only to a not desired loss of energy but also to an inadmissible increase of the temperatures underneath the insulation layer, affecting the structural stability of the tank. The proposed correlations provide a quick method for the estimation of total tank foundation heat losses and soil maximum temperature reached underneath the insulation layer, saving time, and cost on the engineering tank foundation design process. Finally, a comprehensive parametric analysis of the variables of interest is made and a set of cases covering a wide range of tank sizes, insulation levels, depths to water table, and storage temperatures are solved.

In this paper we explore the possibility of using transition edge sensor (TES) detectors in multi-mode configuration in the focal plane of the Short Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer (SWIPE) of the balloon-borne polarimeter Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE) for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization. This study is motivated by the fact that maximizing the sensitivity of TES bolometers, under the augmented background due to the multi-mode design, requires a non trivial choice of detector parameters. The ATHENA observatory is the second large-class ESA mission, in the context of the Cosmic Vision 2015–2025, scheduled to be launched on 2028 at L2 orbit. One of the two planned focal plane instruments is the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), which will be able to perform simultaneous high-grade energy spectroscopy and imaging over the 5 arcmin FoV by means of a kilo-pixel array of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters, coupled to a high-quality X-ray optics. Memory for personally-relevant past events (episodic memory) is critical for activities of daily living. Decline in this type of declarative long-term memory is a common characteristic of healthy ageing, a process accelerated in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has been used as a strategy to ameliorate episodic memory. Here, we critically review studies investigating whether tES may improve episodic memory in physiological and pathological ageing. Most of the studies suggest that tES over the prefrontal or temporoparietal cortices can have a positive effect on episodic memory, but the transfer to improvement of execution of daily living activities is still unknown. Further work is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects of stimulation, combine tES with neuroimaging and optimizing the dosing of stimulation. Future studies should also investigate the optimal timing of stimulation and the combination with medications to induce long-lasting beneficial effects in pathological ageing. More open science efforts should be done to improve rigor and reliability of tES in ageing research.

In spite of the benefits from thermal energy storage (TES) integration in dwellings, the penetration rate in Europe is 5%. Effective fiscal policies are necessary to accelerate deployment. However, there is currently no direct support for TES in buildings compared to support for electricity storage. This could be due to lack of evidence to support incentivisation. In this study, a novel systematic framework is developed to provide a case in support of TES incentivisation. The model determines the costs, CO2 emissions, dispatch strategy and sizes of technologies, and TES for a domestic user under policy neutral and policy intensive scenarios. The model is applied to different building types in the UK. The model is applied to a case study for a detached dwelling in the UK (floor area of 122 m2), where heat demand is satisfied by a boiler and electricity imported from the grid. Results show that under a policy neutral scenario, integrating a micro-Combined Heat and Power (CHP) reduces the primary energy demand by 11%, CO2 emissions by 21%, but with a 16 year payback. Additional benefits from TES integration can pay for the investment within the first 9 years, reducing to 3.5–6 years when the CO2 levy is accounted for. Under a policy intensive scenario (for example considering the Feed in Tariff (FIT)), primary energy demand and CO2 emissions reduce by 17 and 33% respectively with a 5 year payback. In this case, the additional benefits for TES integration can pay for the investment in TES within the first 2 years. The framework developed is a useful tool is determining the role TES in decarbonising domestic energy systems.

Concentrating solar tower power systems use numerous large, flat, sun-tracking mirrors (heliostats) for focusing sunlight onto a receiver, based at the top of a tower. Thus a heat transfer fluid (HTF) is heated in the receiver, which is used to generate steam and therefore electricity. Due to the high conversion temperature, air used as a HTF has a particularly promising potential for a high solar-to-electric efficiency. One challenge for solar tower power plants is the reduced energy output, when the sun sets or is blocked by clouds, as well as the problem, that there is no sunlight and therefore no energy production during night. To face this issues thermal energy storage (TES) are used. A suitable heat storage technology is the regenerator storage based on directly heated solid media. It has a simple setup, is applicable to highest temperatures ( > 1000°C) and has best prospects for a deployment in large installations. Here slag from steel industry as an inventory material offers cost reduction potentials (Fig. 1). This is due to the fact that slag is treated as waste and can be turned into valuable low cost feedstock for TES. However, for a successful market introduction of this technology, efficient and up-scalable solutions for the heat storage are a prerequisite. Regenerator storages are well suited to the needs, but need further investigations to clarify open questions concerning the implementation in large installations in combination with slag-pebbles as inventory. The EU project RESLAG is dedicated to this.

Background: There are indications that transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) assesses the motor function of the spinal cord in horses in a more sensitive and reproducible fashion than transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). However, no normative data of TES evoked motor potentials (MEP) is available.In this prospective study normative data of TES induced MEP wave characteristics (motor latency times (MLT); amplitude and waveform) was obtained from the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and tibial cranialis (TC) muscles in a group of healthy horses to create a reference frame for functional diagnostic purposes. For the 12 horses involved in the study 95% confidence intervals for MLTs were 16.1-22.6 ms and 31.9-41.1 ms for ECR and TC muscles respectively. Intraindividual coefficients of variation (CV) and mean of MLTs were: ECR: 2.2-8,2% and 4.5% and TC: 1.4-6.3% and 3.5% respectively. Inter-individual CVs for MLTs were higher, though below 10% on all occasions. The mean +/- sd of MEP amplitudes was respectively 3.61 +/- 2.55 mV (ECR muscle left) and 4.53 +/- 3.1 mV (right) and 2.66 +/- 2.22 mV (TC muscle left) and 2.55 +/- 1.85 mV (right). MLTs showed no significant left versus right differences. All MLTs showed significant (p Conclusions: TES is a novel and sensitive technique to assess spinal motor function in horses. It is easy applicable and highly reproducible. This study provides normative data in healthy horses on TES induced MEPs in the extensor carpi radialis and tibialis cranialis muscles bilaterally. No significant differences between MLTs of the left and right side could be demonstrated. A significant effect of stimulation voltage on MLTs was found. No significant effect of height at the withers could be found based upon the results of the current study. A study in which both TMS and TES are applied on the same group of horses is needed.

Concentrating solar tower power systems using air as a heat transfer fluid (HTF) have a promising potential for a high solar-to-electric efficiency due to the high conversion temperature. For a successful market introduction, efficient, cost-effective and up-scalable solutions for the thermal energy storage (TES), a central plant component, are a prerequisite. Regenerator-type storages based on solid heat storage media are well suited to the needs. Here, slag pebbles from steel industry as an inventory material offers cost reduction potentials. However, further investigations are needed to clarify open questions concerning the implementation in large installations in combination with slag pebbles as inventory. The European project RESLAG is dedicated to this. Thermo-mechanical challenges arise during thermal cycling of the TES due to thermal expansion of the slag pebbles. This effect causes two major consequences for the pebble bed. Firstly, the contact forces between pebbles increase, resulting in a higher risk of damaging single pebbles. Secondly, the exerted pressure on the surrounding container walls rises, which needs to be considered when dimensioning the container and the inner insulation. For the thermo-mechanical calculations of the packed bed discrete element method (DEM) is used. A simplified DEM model will be presented, which allows calculating very quickly conservative estimates of the forces and stresses in the bed and the container wall. Results will be presented for large scale designs of slag based TES in concentrating solar tower power systems with air as HTF.

Purpose: In transcranial electrical stimulation, induced motor evoked potentials (MEPs) are influenced by the montage of stimulation electrodes. Differences are to be examined between coronal and sagittal stimulation. Methods: Forty-five patients with idiopathic scoliosis were included. Coronal and sagittal montages were obtained by electrode placement at C3C4 and Cz'F using large contact electrodes. Corkscrew and short needle electrodes were additionally placed at C3C4 in five patients. Voltage motor thresholds (MTvoltage) and MEP amplitudes at 2 times MTvoltage (MEP2MTvoltage) were obtained of upper and lower extremity muscles. Differences of MTvoltage and MEP2MTvoltage at Cz'F and C3C4 and between electrodes were analyzed. Results: MEP2MTvoltage benefits from coronal positioning. Correlations between MTvoltage and impedance were not significant for large electrodes at Cz'F, very low for C3C4, and high for short needles or corkscrew electrodes. MTvoltage of short needles and corkscrews was up to 200% higher compared with MTvoltage of long needles. MTcurrent is increased by 20% to 30% and 2% to 10% for the arm and leg muscles, respectively. Conclusions: Biphasic stimulation at C3C4 is advised when constant voltage stimulation is used to monitor the spinal cord during orthopedic spine surgery. MTvoltage of corkscrew and small needle electrodes are highly sensitive to electrode impedances.
