Spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers are the promising non-cryogenic sensors to potentially replace the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) in the ultra-weak magnetic-field measurements. Although the SERF magnetometers have achieved a sensitivity of sub-femtotesla, the bandwidth is limited at a narrow range. In this work, we developed a closed-loop SERF magnetometer under proportional-integral (PI) control, the bandwidth could be adaptively tuned and extended above 1.2 kHz. A nearly 40-fold enhancement of the typical bandwidth was achieved in comparison with the open-loop system and the sensitivity was maintained at 15 fT/Hz1/2 from 30 Hz to 750 Hz. Moreover, the magnetic field dynamic range could also be greatly improved. This proposed atomic magnetometer with higher bandwidth, sensitivity, and dynamic range has a good prospect in developing a compact, portable, and non-cryogenic magnetic field sensor and may find more applications in biomedical, nuclear magnetic resonance, and fundamental physics research.

Objective Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy marked by an excessive inflammatory response. The anti-inflammatory effect of pyridostigmine (PYR) was previously reported; however, its role in hypertensive pregnancies remains unclear. We hypothesized that PYR could attenuate increased blood pressure and other pathological features in preeclampsia models. Methods The expression of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α was evaluated in normal and preeclampsia pregnant women. PYR (20 mg/kg) was administered daily to reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) and TNF-α (150 ng/day) infused rats from gestation day 14 to GD19. In a cell culture experiment, the effect of acetylcholine (ACh) on TNF-α-stimulated primary human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) was assessed. Results Preeclampsia women had higher placental TNF-α expression than normal pregnant women. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) in the RUPP group was higher than in the Sham group. PYR inhibited serum and placental acetylcholinesterase activity in rats, and reduced MAP, placental oxidative stress, apoptosis and inflammation in the RUPP group but not in the Sham group. In addition, PYR significantly attenuated the TNF-α-induced increase in MAP, placental oxidative stress and apoptosis. Moreover, TNF-α decreased cell viability and increased the number of TUNEL-positive nuclei of HUVEC, which could largely be abolished by ACh treatment. Conclusion Collectively, PYR ameliorated hypertension and other preeclampsia-like symptoms in rat models of preeclampsia not only by inhibiting the synthesis of TNF-α but also by acting against TNF-α-induced detrimental effects directly, which is worthy of further investigation and may be used as a potential agent for preeclampsia management.

BACKGROUND N-Methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) plays critical roles in regulating sympathetic outflow. Studies showed that acute application of the antagonists of NMDAR or its subunits would reduce sympathetic nerve discharges. However, little is known about the effect of long-term management of NMDAR in hypertensive animals. METHODS PEAQX, the specific antagonist of NMDAR subunit 2A (GluN2A) was injected into both sides of the PVN of two-kidney, one-clip (2K1C) renal hypertensive rats and control (normotensive rats) for 3 weeks. RESULTS Three weeks of PEAQX infusion significantly reduced the blood pressure of the 2K1C rats. It managed to resume the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neural transmitters, reduce the level of proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species in the PVN, and reduce the level of norepinephrine in plasma of the 2K1C rats. PEAQX administration also largely reduced the transcription and translation levels of GluN2A and changed the expression levels of NMDAR subunits 1 and 2B (GluN1 and GluN2B). In addition, NMDAR was known to function through activating the extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) or phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) pathways. In our study, we found that in the PVN of 2K1C rats treated with PEAQX, the phosphorylation levels of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK), ERK1/2, and cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) significantly reduced, while the phosphorylation level of PI3K did not change significantly. CONCLUSIONS Chronic blockade of GluN2A alleviates hypertension through suppression of MEK/ERK/CREB pathway.

To investigate comparative short-term outcomes of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) versus video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for older non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Patients ≥ 65 years old with stage I-III NSCLC operated with RAS or VATS from 2016 to 2018 were consecutively included. Propensity score-matched (PSM) method was implemented to balance inter-group biases. Totally 376 participants (224 with VATS and 152 with RAS) were included. After PSM, a cohort (144 with VATS and 107 with RAS) was generated with balanced baseline characteristics. RAS was significantly superior over VATS in the majority of perioperative outcomes, such as operating time (120.8 vs. 165.1 min), conversion rate (0.0% vs. 19.4%), and length of stay (8.6 vs. 10.8 days). RAS versus VATS was significantly associated with comparable rates of postoperative complications (OR 0.642, 95% CI 0.311-1.327), except the rate of pneumonia (OR 0.161, 95% CI 0.048-0.544). RAS leads to analogous postoperative complications and seemingly accelerates the recovery time of older NSCLC patients compared with VATS.

Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptors (RORs) are frequently abnormally expressed in several human malignancies, including gastric cancer (GC). RORs are involved in the development and progression of GC through Wnt signaling pathway receptors and other common receptors. However, the prognostic roles of individual RORs in patients with GC remain elusive. We accessed the prognostic roles of three RORs (RORα, RORβ, and RORγ) through “The Kaplan–Meier plotter” (KM plotter) database in patients with GC. For all patients with GC who were followed for 20 years, the low mRNA expression of all three RORs showed a significant correlation with better outcomes. We further accessed the prognostic value of individual RORs in different clinical pathological features including Lauren classification, clinical stages, pathological grades, HER2 status, and different treatments methods. The RORs demonstrated critical prognostic roles in GC. Expressions of RORs were higher in GC tissues when compared with normal gastric tissues. Moreover, knockdown of RORs significantly inhibited cell proliferation and migration, suggesting an oncogenic role of RORs in human GC. These findings suggest potential roles of RORs as biomarkers for GC prognosis and as oncogenes in GC.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common digestive system tumors in China, and locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) accounts for a high proportion of newly diagnosed cases. Although surgery is the main treatment for gastric cancer, surgical excision alone cannot achieve satisfactory outcomes in LAGC patients. Neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) has gradually become the standard treatment for patients with LAGC, and this treatment can not only achieve tumor downstaging and improve surgical rate and the R0 resection rate, but it also significantly improves the long-term prognosis of patients. Peri/preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy and preoperative chemoradiotherapy are both recommended according to a large number of studies, and the regimens have also been evolved in the past decades. Since the NCCN guidelines for gastric cancer are one of the most authoritative evidence-based guidelines worldwide, here, we demonstrate the development course and major breakthroughs of NAT for gastric cancer based on the vicissitudes of the NCCN guidelines from 2007 to 2019, and also discuss the future of NAT.

Objective: To evaluate the prostate cancer-specific survival (PCSS) of low T stages or low prostate-specific antigens (PSA) levels in men with high-grade prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: Patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer (T1-4N0M0) and Gleason score 8-10 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2004-2010 were identified. These men were stratified by T stages (T1, T2, T3a, T3b-4) and PSA levels (20.0 ng/ml). Propensity-score matching (PSM) was conducted to balance the covariates. Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariable Cox regressions were performed to analyze the PCSS in different T stage or PSA levels groups. Results: A total of 33231 patients aging 69(62~76) years were identified. The overall cohort results showed that the PCSS of T1 group was significantly worse than that of T2 and T3a groups [T2 HR: 0.62(0.57~0.67); T3 HR: 0.70(0.63~0.77)]. Background: Inflammation and oxidative stress play important roles in energy imbalance and its complications. Recent research indicates that hypothalamic inflammation may contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome and cardiac dysfunction, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that suppression of the proinflammatory IKKβ/NF-κB pathway in the hypothalamus can improve energy balance and cardiac function in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rats. Methods: Normal and T2D rats received bilateral hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) infusions of the IKKβ inhibitor SC-514 or vehicle via osmotic minipump. Metabolic phenotyping, immunohistochemical analyses, and biochemical analyses were used to investigate the outcomes of inhibition of the hypothalamic IKKβ. Echocardiography and glucometer were used for measuring cardiac function and blood glucose, respectively. Blood samples were collected for the evaluation of circulating proinflammatory cytokines. Heart was harvested for cardiac morphology evaluations. The ARC was harvested and analyzed for IKKβ, NF-κB, proinflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and NAD(P)H (gp91phox, p47phox) oxidase activity levels and neuropeptides. Results: Compared with normal rats, T2D rats were characterized by hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, cardiac dysfunction, as well as higher ARC levels of IKKβ, NF-κB, proinflammatory cytokines, ROS, gp91phox, and p47phox. ARC infusion of the IKKβ inhibitor SC-514 attenuated all these changes in T2D rats, but not in normal rats. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the hypothalamic IKKβ/NF-κB pathway plays a key role in modulating energy imbalance and cardiac dysfunction, suggesting its potential therapeutic role during type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: The clinical implications of B7H1 and B7H4 in pancreatic cancer have been described however, the prognostic significance of these genes in pancreatic cancer patients remains inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of B7H1 and B7H4 in pancreatic cancer patients. Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) were searched for relevant articles published before May 2019. Meta-analyses were performed by pooling the hazard ratios (HRs) between overall survival or cancer-specific survival and high or low expression of B7H1/B7H4 in pancreatic cancer patients. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed, and sources of variabilities were explored by performing meta-regression. Results: Sixteen studies (1434 patients’ data) were included. Compared with low expression, high expression of B7H1 was associated with significantly poor overall survival (HR 1.92 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.35, 2.74); P50% patients with high expression (HR 1.40 (95% CI 0.87, 2.26)). Conclusion: The current study suggests that high B7H1 and B7H4 expression is associated with a poor prognosis in pancreatic cancer patients.

Toxoplasma gondii belongs to the Apicomplexan protozoa—an obligate intracellular parasite—causing toxoplasmosis that has a worldwide distribution and is very harmful to both human health and the livestock industry. However, the information on toxoplasmosis in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Area (QTPA) and the seroprevalence of T. gondii in the food-borne animals in that area has been limited. Therefore, this study focused to T. gondii and toxoplasmosis to perform an indirect ELISA test based on recombinant TgSAG2 protein to establish a comprehensive record of the seroprevalence of T. gondii infections in a wide range of animals, including Tibetan sheep (Ovis aries), yaks (Bos grunniens), cows, chicken, pigs, and horses, in the QTPA. Overall, the seropositive rates of the specific-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies in all investigated animals were 44.1% (1179/2673) and 18.0% (469/2612), respectively. The 14.9% (389/2612) sera were determined to be both IgG and IgM positive samples, 30.2% (789/2673) were single-IgG seropositive, and a total of 80 in 2612 animals (3.0%) were single-IgM seropositive. Moreover, for the animal species, the pig was the most prevalent animal (90.2%, 304/337) for IgG positivity, followed by Tibetan sheep (50.7%, 460/907), chickens (45.8%, 229/500), yaks (21.1%, 140/663), cows (18.5%, 38/205) and horses (13.1%, 8/61), respectively. For the IgM antibody positivity, the pig was also the most prevalent animal (41.8%, 141/337), followed by Tibetan sheep (21.2%, 191/907), cows (15.1%, 31/205), chickens (12.4%, 62/500) and yaks (6.6%, 44/663), respectively. The significant differences in the prevalent distribution of T. gondii were found in the different altitudes. In conclusion, this study found the high seroprevalence for T. gondii infections among these animal species in the QTPA, and provides new data to facilitate further research for development of control measures against T. gondii infections in the surveyed locations.

Sympathetic activation and the kidney play critical roles in hypertension and chronic heart failure. The role of the kidney in sympathetic activation is still not well known. In this study, we revealed an excitatory renal reflex (ERR) in rats induced by chemical stimulation of the kidney that regulated sympathetic activity and blood pressure. The ERR was induced by renal infusion of capsaicin, and evaluated by the changes in renal sympathetic outflow, blood pressure, and heart rate. Renal infusion of capsaicin dose-dependently increased the contralateral renal sympathetic nerve activity, mean arterial pressure, and heart rate. Capsaicin in the cortico-medullary border had greater effects than in the cortex or medulla. Intravenous infusion of capsaicin had no significant effects. The effects of renal infusion of capsaicin were abolished by ipsilateral renal denervation, but were not affected by bilateral sinoaortic denervation. Renal infusion of capsaicin increased the ipsilateral renal afferent activity. The ERR was also induced by renal infusion of bradykinin, adenosine, and angiotensin II, but not by ATP. Renal infusion of capsaicin increased c-Fos expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of hypothalamus. Lesion of neurons in the PVN with kainic acid abolished the capsaicin-induced ERR. These findings indicate that chemical stimulation of kidney causes an excitatory reflex, leading to sympathetic activation, pressor response, and accelerated heart rate. The PVN is an important central nucleus in the pathway of the ERR. Melatonin, the receptors for which are abundant in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), can protect the heart from myocardial ischemia–reperfusion (MI/R) injury. The aim of this study was to determine whether the infusion of melatonin into the PVN protects the heart from MI/R injury by suppressing oxidative stress or regulating the balance between proinflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines in MI/R rats. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were treated with a bilateral PVN infusion of melatonin. MI/R operation was performed 1 week after infusion. At the end of the third week after the infusion, all the rats were euthanized. This was followed by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence studies of the rats. MI/R rats showed larger infarct size, increased left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volume, and decreased LV ejection fraction and LV fractional shortening. Moreover, MI/R rats had a higher level of norepinephrine in the plasma, heart, and PVN; higher PVN levels of reactive oxygen species, NOX2, NOX4, IL-1β, and NF-κB activity; and lower PVN levels of copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) and IL-10 compared with the sham group. Melatonin infusion in PVN reduced LV end-diastolic volume, norepinephrine, reactive oxygen species, NOX2, NOX4, IL-1β, and NF-κB activity, and increased LV ejection fraction, LV fractional shortening, Cu/Zn-SOD, and IL-10. Overall, these results suggest that the infusion of melatonin ameliorates sympathetic nerve activity and MI/R injury by attenuating oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines in the PVN of MI/R rats.

Objective Sustained hypertension is a major cause of heart failure in aging hypertensive patients. Salusin β, a novel bioactive peptide of 20 amino acids, has been reported to participate in various cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. We therefore hypothesized that central knockdown of salusin β might be effective for hypertension-induced heart failure treatment. Methods and results Eighteen-month-old male aged spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with heart failure and WKY rats were microinjected with either a specific adenoviral vector encoding salusin β shRNA (Ad-Sal-shRNA) or a scramble shRNA (Ad-Scr-shRNA) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) for 4 weeks. Radiotelemetry and echocardiography were used for measuring blood pressure and cardiac function, respectively. Blood samples and heart were harvested for evaluating plasma norepinephrine, tyrosine hydroxylase, and cardiac morphology, respectively. The mesenteric arteries were separated for measurement of vascular responses. The PVN was analyzed for salusin β, proinflammatory cytokines (PICs), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), NF-κB, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Compared with normotensive rats, aging SHR with heart failure had dramatically increased salusin β expression. Silencing salusin β with Ad-Sal-shRNA attenuated arterial pressure and improved autonomic function, cardiac and vascular dysfunction in aging SHR with heart failure, but not in aging WKY rats. Knockdown of salusin β significantly reduced paraventricular nucleus PICs levels, MAPK and NF-κB activity, and ROS levels in aging SHR with heart failure. Conclusion These data demonstrate that in aging SHR, the heart failure that was developed during the end stage of hypertension could be ameliorated by silencing salusin β.

The diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children has been an issue in the medical community. Timely diagnosis and treatment can provide a greater guarantee for children's healthy growth. In recent years, there have been more and more studies on the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children. This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of echocardiography and 64-slice spiral computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children. In clinical trials, we also tested 64 patients with spiral computed tomography (SCT) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) detection of patients and then confirmed the accuracy of the diagnosis by the surgical methods. The two methods of detection, the rate of missed diagnosis, and the rate of misdiagnosis were counted. Through the test results and pathological diagnosis results, the diagnostic accuracy of the two methods were all above 90%, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The sensitivity of echocardiographic in detecting intracardiac structure abnormalities was relatively high, but when the diagnosis of extracardiac structural abnormalities less than 64-slice spiral CT method, misdiagnosis of TTE was mainly due to extracardiac vascular malformations. Therefore, it is recommended to combine the two methods to improve the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of “Jin Shang”, a specialized term in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, in young adults with chronic neck pain (CNP) and investigated the correlation of “Jin Shang” with pain intensity and living disabilities using cross-section study. Methods: The thickness of the bilateral splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis were measured by ultrasound imaging (USI) as the objective performance of “Jin Shang”. The visual analogue scale (VAS) and Northwick Park Questionnaire (NPQ) were used to assess pain intensity and living disability. The Student's t test was used to investigate the difference in neck extensor muscle (NEM) thickness between CNP patients and healthy controls. Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression were applied to investigate the relationship between NEM thickness, pain intensity and disability. Results: Fifty-nine young adult CNP patients and 16 healthy controls were recruited in this study, in accordance with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The student's t test showed that in CNP patients, the thickness of the semispinalis capitis during isometric contraction was significantly thinner than that of healthy controls (P = .04). Pearson's correlation analysis also revealed significant relationships between NEM thickness, VAS, and NPQ, while multiple linear regression showed that the thickness of the NEM in CNP patients was a significant predictor of pain intensity and disability. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the thickness of the NEM in young adults with CNP when compared to healthy controls. Alterations in the NEM thickness in both rest and contraction are moderately related to neck pain and living disabilities. Our results investigated the characteristics of “Jin Shang” using USI and revealed a correlation between “Jin Shang” and CNP symptoms, which demonstrates that NEM plays an important role in CNP. Qubit operation belonging to unitary transformation is the fundamental operation to realize quantum computing and information processing. Here, we show that the complex and flexible light-matter interaction between dielectric metasurfaces and incident light can be used to perform arbitrary U(2) operations. By incorporating both coherent spatial-mode operation together with two polarizations on a single metasurface, we further extend the discussion to single-photon two-qubit U(4) operations. We believe the efficient usage of metasurfaces as a potential compact platform can simplify optical qubit operation from bulky systems into conceptually subwavelength elements.

Long-term maternal salt intake induces the hypertension in offspring. Numerous studies have also indicated that high-salt diet causes the inflammation and an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) which increases the blood pressure and sympathetic activity. This study aimed to explore whether maternal salt intake induces hypertension in their male offspring by increasing the inflammation and changing the neurotransmitters balance in the paraventricular nucleus of offspring. This study includes two parts: Part I to explore the effect of high-salt diet on pregnant rats and the changes in inflammation and neurotransmitters in their male offspring PVN; Part II to reveal the influence on their offspring of bilateral PVN infusion of c-Src inhibitor dasatinib (DAS) in pregnant rats fed a high-salt diet. Maternal high-salt diet intake during copulation, pregnancy, and lactation impacted the offspring mean arterial pressure (MAP) and elevated the offspring PVN levels of p-Src, proinflammatory cytokines, and excitatory neurotransmitters. Bilateral PVN infusion of a c-Src inhibitor combined with maternal high-salt diets decreased MAP in the offspring. The infusion was also shown to suppress the Src-induced MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway (p38 MAPK, JNK, Erk1/2), which attenuates inflammatory reactions. Finally, bilateral PVN infusion of the Src inhibitor in pregnant rat with high-salt diets improved the levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters in offspring PVN, which restored the excitatory-inhibitory neurotransmitter balance in male offspring. High-salt diets increase sympathetic activity and blood pressure in adult offspring, probably by activating the c-Src/MAPKs/NF-κB signaling pathway-induced inflammation. Moreover, NF-κB disrupts the downstream excitatory-inhibitory neurotransmitter balance in the PVN of male offspring.

Background and Aims: There is a controversy regarding whether fingolimod is associated with an increased risk of infection in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine the risk of infection in these patients.Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.gov from inception to April 8, 2020, to identify RCTs that reported the occurrence of infection in patients with MS treated with fingolimod. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using the random-effects model.Results: Twelve RCTs including 8,448 patients were eligible. Compared with the control (placebo and other active treatments), fingolimod significantly increased the risk of infection (RR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.07–1.27; I2, 81%), regardless of whether the infection was a general infection (RR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.05–1.25; I2, 78%), or a serious infection (RR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.06–2.10; I2, 0%). Analyses of subgroups found that fingolimod significantly increased the risk of lower respiratory infection (RR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.19–1.85; I2, 0%) and herpes virus infection (RR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.01–1.78; I2, 9%). There appears to be no dose-dependent increase in the risk of infection associated with fingolimod (0.5 mg: RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07–1.25; I2, 91%; 1.25 mg: RR, 1.11; 95% CI, 0.97–1.28; I2, 81%; Pinteraction = 0.66).Conclusions: Compared with a placebo and other active treatments, fingolimod was associated with a 16% increase in the risk of infection, especially lower respiratory infection and herpes virus infection. The risk of infection associated with fingolimod might not be dose related.

Excessive sympathetic activation plays crucial roles in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Chemical stimulation of renal afferents increases the sympathetic activity and blood pressure in normal rats. This study investigated the excitatory renal reflex (ERR) in the development of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Experiments were performed in the Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY) and SHR aged at 4, 12, and 24 weeks under anesthesia. Renal infusion of capsaicin was used to stimulate renal afferents, and thus, to induce ERR. The ERR was evaluated by the changes in the contralateral renal sympathetic nerve activity and mean arterial pressure. At the age of 4 weeks, the early stage with a slight or moderate hypertension, the ERR was more enhanced in SHR compared with WKY. The pressor response was greater than the sympathetic activation response in the SHR. At the age of 12 weeks, the development stage with severe hypertension, there was no significant difference in the ERR between the WKY and SHR. At the age of 24 weeks, the later stage of hypertension with long-term several hypertensions, the ERR was more attenuated in the SHR compared with the WKY. On the other hand, the pressor response to sympathetic activation due to the ERR was smaller at the age of 12 and 24 weeks than those at the age of 4 weeks. These results indicate that ERR is enhanced in the early stage of hypertension, and attenuated in the later stage of hypertension in the SHR. Abnormal ERR is involved in the sympathetic activation and the development of hypertension.

Efficient and flexible manipulation of electromagnetic waves using metasurfaces has attracted continuous attention in recent years. However, previous studies mainly apply sole resonance effect to accomplish the task. Here, we show that introducing a meta-coupling effect would reveal further physical insights in the electromagnetic wave control. To demonstrate this, a reflection-type coupling system composed by two identical linear resonances in a metal-insulator-metal configuration is theoretically proposed using the coupled-mode theory, whose phase diagram can be well controlled upon the coupling changes. Such intriguing optical property is verified by a double C-shaped resonator in the terahertz regime, where the coupling effect can be tuned by changing their either relative distance or rotation. More importantly, the reflection phase shift around the working frequency can be efficiently engineered without having to change the dimensions of the resonators. Two efficient anomalous metasurface deflectors are designed and experimentally characterized, whose maximum measured efficiency is more than 70%. The proposed controlling strategy further enriches the designing freedoms of metasurfaces and may find broad applications in realizing efficient and tunable functional devices.

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) show encouraging performance in image super-resolution (SR) by learning a nonlinear mapping function from low-resolution (LR) images to high-resolution (HR) images. The latest SR method focuses on the design of a deeper network structure. However, deeper network training is usually more difficult. In this paper, we propose a new end-to-end residual attention network (RAN). RAN is composed of a series of residual attention modules. We use two types of attention modules in the network, which can better explore the feature correlation in the channel and spatial dimensions and focus on learning high-frequency information. Experimental results show that our RAN is superior to the most state-of-the-art SR methods in terms of quantitative indicators PSNR and SSIM and visual perception.

Video denoising is of great significance in video processing when shooting conditions are complex such as dynamic scenes and low light. Although existing algorithms have already achieved remarkable denoising performance, the inference time of them is usually impractical for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network architecture for video denoising. In contrast to other existing CNN-based methods, our approach utilizes different proportion convolutional kernel numbers in a block for extracting enriched features. Channel attention mechanism is integrated in the network to enhance the denoising performance. The network only needs three contiguous frames and noise map as inputs, which leads to a similar excellent running time to the state-of-the-art. We compare our method with different conventional algorithms VBM4D, VNLB and the state-of-the-art CNN-based method FastDVDnet. Experiment results indicate that our method outputs more convincing results in visual and more robustness than others in both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) indexes.

Afterglow imaging that detects photons after cessation of optical excitation avoids tissue autofluorescence and thus possesses higher sensitivity than traditional fluorescence imaging. Purely organic molecules with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have emerged as a new library of benign afterglow agents. However, most RTP luminogens only emit visible light with shallow tissue penetration, constraining their in vivo applications. This study presents an organic RTP nanoprobe (mTPA-N) with emission in the NIR range for in vivo afterglow imaging. Such a probe is composed of RTP molecule (mTPA) as the phosphorescent generator and an NIR-fluorescent dye as the energy acceptor to enable room-temperature phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (RT-PRET), ultimately resulting in redshifted phosphorescent emission at 780 nm. Because of the elimination of background noise and redshifted afterglow luminescence in a biologically transparent window, mTPA-N permits imaging of lymph nodes in living mice with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This study thus opens up a universal approach to develop organic RTP luminogens into NIR afterglow imaging agents via construction of RT-PRET.

Objective Angiolipoma is a benign tumor that rarely occurs in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This case series was performed to increase clinicians’ understanding of the diagnosis and management of GI angiolipoma. Methods We evaluated the clinical presentations, diagnoses, and treatments of 3 patients with angiolipoma in the upper GI tract in our hospital and 27 cases reported in the literature. Results Among all 30 cases of GI angiolipoma, 2 originated in the esophagus, 4 in the stomach, 2 in the duodenum, 1 in the jejunum, 7 in the ileum, 1 in the cecum, 9 in the colon, 2 in the rectum, and 2 in both the duodenum and colon. Conclusion Angiolipoma of the GI tract may be more likely to occur in middle-aged and elderly men and be located in the ileum and colon. The clinical manifestations generally involve upper GI hemorrhage and lower GI pain and obstruction. Computed tomography and endoscopy may be effective diagnostic techniques, but postoperative histopathologic examination is still the gold standard. The management of angiolipoma in the GI tract depends on the size and type of lesion. Most cases in the present series were managed by complete surgical resection, after which no recurrence was found.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most important pathogenic bacteria associated with various gastrointestinal diseases. At present, its apoptotic or antiapoptotic mechanism on gastric epithelial cells remains unknown and needs further illustrated. In this study, acute infection model (H. pylori and GES-1 cells were co-cultured for 24 h at a multiplicity of infection MOI of 100:1) and chronic infection model (GES-1 cells were infected repeatedly every 24 h at a multiplicity of infection MOI of 100:1 for approximately 8 weeks) were established, respectively. the chronic H. pylori infected GES-1 cells underwent a typically morphological change and Western Blot results showed that there was slight decrease in expression of E-cadherin, and obvious increase in expression of Vimentin. Apoptosis of these two models were analyzed by flow cytometry compared with the control cells, meanwhile, apoptosis associated markers (Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, Bax, etc) were detected by Western blot, additional in clinical H. pylori-positive gastric cancer tissues. Results showed that compared with the control cells, acute infection of H. pylori significantly accelerated the apoptosis of GES-1, increased the expression of Bax and Cleaved caspase-3, down-regulated expression of Bcl-xL and Bcl-2. Moreover, an opposite result was found in chronic infection of model and clinical gastric cancer tissues, and enhanced expression of NF–κB p65. Taken together, these findings suggest that H. pylori infection plays differential effects on apoptosis of gastric epithelial cells.

Organic fluorescent molecules play critical roles in fluorescence inspection, biological probes, and labeling indicators. More than ten thousand organic fluorescent molecules were imported in this study, followed by a machine learning based approach for extracting the intrinsic structural characteristics that were found to correlate with the fluorescence emission. A systematic informatics procedure was introduced, starting from descriptor cleaning, descriptor space reduction, and statistical-meaningful regression to build a broad and valid model for estimating the fluorescence emission wavelength. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression coupling with the random forest model was finally reported as the numerical predictor as well as being fulfilled with the statistical criteria. Such an informatics model appeared to bring comparable predictive ability, being complementary to the conventional time-dependent density functional theory method in emission wavelength prediction, however, with a fractional computational expense.

Objectives This study aimed to measure the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in Chinese elderly population according to the 2019 Beers Criteria and to evaluate the associative factors of PIMs. Methods Prescriptions of patients aged over 65 years who were hospitalized during January 2017 to December 2017 were retrieved from Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperation Project, covering seventy-six facilities in six cities in China. PIMs were identified by 2019 Beers Criteria. Results In total, 40.1% elderly patients were treated with at least one PIM independent of their diagnoses or conditions according to the 2019 Beers Criteria. The most frequently prescribed inappropriate medications independent of diagnoses or conditions were proton-pump inhibitors (12.9%). Diuretics (8.2%) and central nervous system medications (6.9%) also showed a relatively high prevalence among the investigated patients. Based on the Beers Criteria’s lists of drug-disease interactions, elderly patients with central nervous system conditions (including delirium, dementia or cognitive impairment) or with a history of falls or fractures were most commonly exposed to PIMs. Logistic regression revealed that inappropriate medication use was associated with age (≥80 years old), number of conditions (≥5), number of medications prescribed (≥10) and class of healthcare facilities. Conclusion This study was able to confirm that the phenomenon of prescribing potentially inappropriate medications was common in China. Our findings support the importance of developing explicit criteria to detect PIMs in China and implementing effective interventions to promote better quality of prescribing for elderly patients.

Hypertension, as one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, significantly affects human health. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and the E3-class prostanoid (EP3) receptor have previously been demonstrated to modulate blood pressure and hemodynamics in various animal models of hypertension. The PGE2-evoked pressor and biochemical responses can be blocked with the EP3 receptor antagonist, L-798106 (N-[(5-bromo-2methoxyphenyl)sulfonyl]-3-[2-(2-naphthalenylmethyl) phenyl]-2-propenamide). In the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), sympathetic excitation can be introduced by PGE2, which can activate EP3 receptors located in the PVN. In such a case, the central knockdown of EP3 receptor can be considered as a potential therapeutic modality for hypertension management. The present study examined the efficacy of the PVN infusion of L-798106, by performing experiments on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs). The rats were administered with chronic bilateral PVN infusion of L-798106 (10 μg/day) or the vehicle for 28 days. The results indicated that the SHRs had a higher mean arterial pressure (MAP), an increased Fra-like (Fra-LI) activity in the PVN, as well as a higher expression of gp91phox, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and proinflammatory cytokines in the PVN compared with the WKYs. Additionally, the expression of Cu/Zn-SOD in the PVN of the SHRs was reduced compared with the WKYs. The bilateral PVN infusion of L-798106 significantly reduced MAP, as well as plasma norepinephrine (NE) levels in the SHRs. It also inhibited Fra-LI activity and reduced the expression of gp91phox, proinflammatory cytokines, and MAPK, whereas it increased the expression of Cu/Zn-SOD in the PVN of SHRs. In addition, L-798106 restored the balance of the neurotransmitters in the PVN. On the whole, the findings of the present study demonstrate that the PVN blockade of EP3 receptor can ameliorate hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy partially by attenuating ROS and proinflammatory cytokines, and modulating neurotransmitters in the PVN.

Data concerning the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in asymptomatic and paucisymptomatic patients are lacking. We report a 3-family cluster of infections involving asymptomatic and paucisymptomatic transmission. Eight of 15 (53%) members from 3 families were confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Of 8 patients, 3 were asymptomatic and 1 was paucisymptomatic. An asymptomatic mother transmitted the virus to her son, and a paucisymptomatic father transmitted the virus to his 3-month-old daughter. SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the environment of 1 household. The complete genomes of SARS-CoV-2 from the patients were > 99.9% identical and were clustered with other SARS-CoV-2 sequences reported from China and other countries.

Anti-γ-aminobutyric acid-B (GABAB) receptor encephalitis is an autoimmune encephalitis associated with antibodies against neuronal cell surface antigens, which are primarily observed with small-cell lung cancer, melanoma, and thymoma. Here, we first report a case on the association between a relatively frequent cancer, gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), and a rare GABAB receptor antibody limbic encephalitis. The patient was treated with immunotherapy and combined-drug chemotherapy, which were partially effective in terms of stabilizing the tumor and relieving neurological symptoms. This report indicates that, when patients present with GABAB receptor antibody limbic encephalitis, regular and broad screening for tumors including gastric adenocarcinoma should also be considered.

In a single magneto-optical (MO) waveguide, the dispersion of guided bulk wave is reciprocal in the Voigt configuration. Here we show that the parity-time (P T) phase in two coupled MO waveguides can be nonreciprocal if the waveguides are properly biased. The nonreciprocal P T phase is closely related to the asymmetric field profile induced by the MO effect that modifies the coupling strength between adjacent waveguides. We show that it is feasible to switch between broken and conserved P T phases by simply reversing the magnetic bias or the propagating direction of wave. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation prove our theory. This investigation highlights a flexible method in manipulating the field dynamics of waveguide arrays by using the novel properties of P T phase especially the exceptional points.

Exercise training (ExT) is beneficial for cardiovascular health, yet the central mechanism by which aerobic ExT attenuates the hypertensive responses remains unclear. Activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is important for the sympathoexcitation and hypertensive response. We thus hypothesized that aerobic ExT can decrease the blood pressure of hypertensive rats by reducing the levels of PICs through TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling within the PVN. To examine this hypothesis, two-kidney-one-clip (2K1C) renovascular hypertensive rats were assigned to two groups: sedentary or exercise training and examined for 8 weeks. At the same time, bilateral PVN infusion of vehicle or TAK242, a TLR4 inhibitor, was performed on both groups. As a result, the systolic blood pressure (SBP), renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and plasma levels of norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (EPI) were found significantly increased in 2K1C hypertensive rats. These rats also had higher levels of Fra-like activity, NF-κB p65 activity, TLR4, MyD88, IL-1β and TNF-α in the PVN than SHAM rats. Eight weeks of ExT attenuated the RSNA and SBP, repressed the NF-κB p65 activity, and reduced the increase of plasma levels of NE, EPI, and the expression of Fra-like, TLR4, MyD88, IL-1β and TNF-α in the PVN of 2K1C rats. These findings are highly similar to the results in 2K1C rats with bilateral PVN infusions of TLR4 inhibitor (TAK242). This suggests that 8 weeks of aerobic ExT may decrease blood pressure in hypertensive rats by reducing the PICs activation through TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling within the PVN, and thus delays the progression of 2K1C renovascular hypertension.

Exercise training is one of the major non-pharmacological treatments for hypertension. However, the central mechanism by which exercise training attenuates the hypertensive responses remains unclear. Irisin is a muscle-secreted cytokine derived from fibronectin type III domain containing 5 (FNDC5) that will be released into the circulation during exercise. We hypothesized that irisin may play a role in the blood pressure regulation by exercise. To examine the hypothesis, our study investigated the effect of irisin on hypertension and its central mechanism. The study was performed in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats. We found that intravenous injection of irisin effectively reduced blood pressure, plasma norepinephrine, paraventricular nucleus (PVN) levels of neuronal activation, oxidative stress and inflammation in SHRs. Moreover, irisin activated nuclear factor E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) and restored the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the PVN. Our study also found PVN knockdown of Nrf2 abolished the protective effects of irisin on hypertension. These findings demonstrate irisin can improve hypertension via Nrf2-mediated antioxidant in the PVN.

Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by hypertension, autonomic imbalance and inflammation. The subfornical organ (SFO) reportedly relays peripheral inflammatory mediator's signals to the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), a brain autonomic center shown to mediate hypertension in hypertensive rat but not yet in PE rat models. Additionally, we previously showed that Pyridostigmine (PYR), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, attenuated placental inflammation and hypertension in PE models. In this study, we investigated the effect of PYR on the activities of these brain regions in PE model. PYR (20 mg/kg/day) was administered to reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) Sprague-Dawley rat from gestational day (GD) 14 to GD19. On GD19, the mean arterial pressure (MAP) was recorded and samples were collected for analysis. RUPP rats exhibited increased MAP (P = 0.0025), elevated circulating tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α, P = 0.0075), reduced baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), increased neuroinflammatory markers including TNF-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), microglial activation (P = 0.0039), oxidative stress and neuronal excitation within the PVN and the SFO. Changes in MAP, in molecular and cellular expression induced by RUPP intervention were improved by PYR. The ability of PYR to attenuate TNF-α mediated central effect was evaluated in TNF-α-infused pregnant rats. TNF-α infusion-promoted neuroinflammation in the PVN and SFO in dams was abolished by PYR. Collectively, our data suggest that PYR improves PE-like symptoms in rat by dampening placental ischemia and TNF-α-promoted inflammation and pro-hypertensive activity in the PVN. This broadens the therapeutical potential of PYR in PE.

Gut dysbiosis and dysregulation of gut–brain communication have been identified in hypertensive patients and animal models. Previous studies have shown that probiotic or prebiotic treatments exert positive effects on the pathophysiology of hypertension. This study aimed to examine the hypothesis that the microbiota-gut-brain axis is involved in the antihypertensive effects of curcumin, a potential prebiotic obtained from Curcuma longa. Male 8- to 10-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were divided into four groups: WKY rats and SHRs treated with vehicle and SHRs treated with curcumin in dosage of 100 or 300 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks. Our results show that the elevated blood pressure of SHRs was markedly decreased in both curcumin-treated groups. Curcumin treatment also altered the gut microbial composition and improved intestinal pathology and integrity. These factors were associated with reduced neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the hypothalamus paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Moreover, curcumin treatment increased butyrate levels in the plasma, which may be the result of increased butyrate-producing gut microorganisms. In addition, curcumin treatment also activated G protein-coupled receptor 43 (GPR 43) in the PVN. These results indicate that curcumin reshapes the composition of the gut microbiota and ameliorates the dysregulation of the gut-brain communication to induce antihypertensive effects.

The effect of bridge vibrationinduced bylive loads such as vehicles and pedestrians is an important factor of bridge fatigue damage. It takes much labor and material resource to perform vibration experiments on bridges subjected by real moving loads in field. In order to carry out laboratory experiments on bridges subjected by moving loads, a fixed load with harmonic vibration simulates a moving load on bridge in the beam theory. A simply supported bridge is considered in the present study. The dynamic responses of bridge under different loads are established by the analytic method. Amplitude and frequency of the simulated load are generated on the principle of equal displacements due to both a moving load and a fixed harmonic load impacting on a simply supported beam. Comparisons of numerical results of two types of load on the same beam indicate that the harmonic load can simulate a moving load effectively. It is possible that the field test on bridge can be carried out indoors.

We investigate the optical resonances in coupled meta-atoms with hybrid interaction pathways. One interaction pathway is the directly near-field coupling between the two meta-atoms. The other interaction pathway is via the continuum in a waveguide functioned as a common bus connecting them. We show that by properly introducing gain or loss into the meta-atoms, the hybrid optical system becomes parity-time ( P T ) symmetric, in which the effective coupling rate can be customized by manipulating the length of the waveguide. At the exact phase of the customized P T symmetry, the coupled meta-atoms support discrete super-resonant modes that can be observed from the transmission spectra as extremely sharp peaks. At an exception point where the eigenmodes coalesce, albeit the transmission curve is flat, a high-Q factor of the localized field in the meta-atoms can be obtained. Similarities of the super-resonance with the bound states in the continuum (BICs) are discussed. This investigation promotes our understanding about the ways in realizing high-Q optical resonance especially by manipulating the distributions of loss and gain via the concepts of P T and BICs. Many attractive applications are expected.

Background This study aims to investigate the effect of diabetes on post-endovascular aneurysm repairs (EVARs) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Methods A total of 1,479 consecutive patients who underwent AAA EVAR were reviewed. The cohorts were divided based on their diabetes status and compared. Preoperative demographic and comorbidity data were analyzed using the t -test and chi-squared test, whereas post-EVAR outcomes were analyzed using Probit multivariate model, followed by Kaplan-Meier survival curve and Cox regression. Results Of our 1,479 patients, 993 met inclusion criteria. One hundred eighty-three were diabetics (18.4%) compared with 810 nondiabetics (81.6%). Coronary artery disease (CAD; diabetics: 70.49%, nondiabetics: 60.76%, P = 0.014) and hypertension (HTN; diabetics: 90.16%, nondiabetics: 79.46%, P = 0.0008) were the only comorbidities analyzed, including follow-up length, which had any significant differences between the diabetic and nondiabetic groups. Probit multivariate analysis using a combined cohort follow-up mean of 51 months showed a significant decrease in aneurysm sac enlargement in diabetic patients (diabetics: 13.11%, nondiabetics: 19.43%, model estimate: 0.3058; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.0486–0.5629, Pr > ChiSq = 0.0198) and trended toward significantly fewer reinterventions (diabetics: 23.50%, nondiabetics: 28.41%, model estimate: 0.1990; 95% CI: −0.0262 to 0.4243, Pr > ChiSq = 0.0833). In the Cox regressions, diabetes had a significant protective factor on reinterventions (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.697, Pr > ChiSq = 0.0151), and was trending toward significance for aneurysm sac enlargement (HR: 0.750, Pr > ChiSq = 0.1961). There was no significant difference across diabetic status in any other outcomes, including mortality and endoleak occurrence. Conclusions Although a higher proportion of diabetic patients present with HTN and CAD, they have decreased long-term rates of aneurysm sac enlargement after EVAR. As a result, this cohort trends toward a lower need for reintervention after EVAR.

There is a lack of evidence regarding the economic effects of nutrition support in patients at nutritional risk. The aim of this study was to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis by comparing an adequate nutrition support cohort with a no-support cohort.A prospective observational study was performed in the surgical and medical gastroenterology wards. We identified patients at nutritional risk and the provision of nutrition support by the staff, unaware of the risk status, was recorded. Cost data were obtained from each patient's statement of accounts, and effectiveness was measured by the rate of infectious complication. To control for potential confounding variables, the propensity score method with matching was carried out. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was calculated based on the matched population.We screened 3791 patients, and 440 were recruited for the analysis. Patients in the nutrition support cohort had a lower incidence of infectious complications than those in the no-support cohort (9.1 versus 18.1%; P = 0.007). This result was similar in the 149 propensity matched pairs (9.4 versus 24.2%; P 0.001). The median hospital length of stay was significantly reduced among the matched nutrition support patients (13 versus 15 d; P 0.001). The total costs were similar among the matched pairs (US $6219 versus $6161). The incremental cost-effectiveness analysis suggested that nutrition support cost US $392 per patient prevented from having infectious complications.Nutrition support was associated with fewer infectious complications and shorter length of stay in patients at nutritional risk. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio indicated that nutrition support had not increased costs significantly.

Adulterations and geographical origins are two essential quality factors of foods and herbs. In this work, the authentication of a traditional Chinese herb, Gastrodia elata BI. (GE), against artificial frauds and fine classification of geographical origins, was performed using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometrics. Class models of representative and authentic GE samples collected from different geographical origins were developed using one-class partial least squares (OCPLS) for untargeted detection of 4 common exogenous adulterants, including taro starch, sweet potato starch, potato starch and Polygonatum sibiricum powder. Fine classification of GE samples from 14 geographical origins was performed using a new large-class-number classification strategy, interval-combination one-versus-one partial least squares discriminant analysis (IC-OVO-PLSDA). Different data preprocessing methods were investigated to improve the classification accuracy of models. As a result, OCPLS with second-order derivative (D2) spectra could detect 1.0% (w/w) or higher levels of 4 different adulterants and obtain a sensitivity of 0.9107. For fine classification of geographical origins, a total classification accuracy of 0.9250 was achieved by IC-OVO-PLSDA with standard normal variate (SNV) spectra. The study demonstrates the potential of using NIR combined with chemometrics for the authentication of pure GE against multiple adulterants and fine classification of geographical origins.

We present a comprehensive analysis of terahertz waves propagation through a bulk MoS2 crystal slab. It is shown that broadband coherent perfect absorption can be achieved and the coherent absorptivity can be adjusted from 1.57% to 99.97% by means of phase modulation. Moreover, the relative bandwidth for over 90% coherent absorptivity can be as wide as 179%. By increasing the doping rate in MoS2 crystal, the coherent absorptivity spectrum exhibits a clear blueshift whilst the peak coherent absorptivity remains over 99.9%. Full-wave numerical simulations are further carried out to confirm the validity of our theoretical analysis.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brain are involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG), one of the active compounds in green tea, has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and vascular protective properties. This study was designed to determine whether chronic infusion of EGCG into the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) attenuates ROS and sympathetic activity and delays the progression of hypertension by up-regulating anti-inflammatory cytokines, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs) and decreasing nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activity, as well as restoring the neurotransmitters balance in the PVN of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Adult normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and SHR received bilateral PVN infusion of EGCG (20μg/h) or vehicle via osmotic minipumps for 4 weeks. SHR showed higher mean arterial pressure, plasma proinflammatory cytokines and circulating norepinephrine (NE) levels compared with WKY rats. SHR also had higher PVN levels of the subunit of NAD(P)H oxidase (gp91phox), ROS, tyrosine hydroxylase, and PICs; increased NF-κB activity; and lower PVN levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and 67kDa isoform of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD67) than WKY rats. PVN infusion of EGCG attenuated all these changes in SHR. These findings suggest that SHR have an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, as well as an imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the PVN. Chronic inhibition of ROS in the PVN restores the balance of neurotransmitters and cytokines in the PVN, thereby attenuating hypertensive response and sympathetic activity.

The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) plays crucial roles in central cardiovascular regulation. Increasing evidence in humans and rodents shows that vitamin D intake is important for achieving optimal cardiovascular function. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether calcitriol, an active form of vitamin D, improves autonomic and cardiovascular function in hypertensive rats and whether PVN oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in these beneficial effects. Male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive control Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were treated with either calcitriol (40 ng/day) or vehicle (0.11 μL/h) through chronic PVN infusion for 4 weeks. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded continuously by radiotelemetry. PVN tissue, heart and plasma were collected for molecular and histological analysis. Compared to WKY rats, SHR exhibited increased systolic blood pressure, sympathetic drive, and cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling. These were associated with higher mRNA and protein expression levels of high mobility box 1 (HMGB1), receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), proinflammatory cytokines, NADPH oxidase subunit in the PVN. In addition, increased norepinephrine in plasma, elevated reactive oxygen species levels and activation of microglia in the PVN were also observed in SHR. Chronic calcitriol treatment ameliorated these changes but not in WKY rats. Our results demonstrate that chronic infusion of calcitriol in the PVN ameliorates hypertensive responses, sympathoexcitation and retains cardiovascular function in SHR. Reduced inflammation and oxidative stress within the PVN are involved in these calcitriol-induced effects.

Tin perovskite nanomaterial is one of the promising candidates to replace organic lead halide perovskites in lighting applications. Unfortunately, the performance of tin-based systems is markedly inferior to those featuring toxic Pb salts. In an effort to improve the emission quantum efficiency of nanoscale 2D layered tin iodide perovskites through fine-tuning the electronic property of organic ammonium salts, we came to unveil the relationship between dielectric confinement and the photoluminescent properties of tin iodide perovskite nanodisks. Our results show that increasing the dielectric contrast for organic versus inorganic layers leads to a bathochromic shift in emission peak wavelength, a decrease of exciton recombination time, and importantly a significant boost in the emission efficiency. Under optimized conditions, a leap in emission quantum yield to a record high 21% was accomplished for the nanoscale thienylethylammonium tin iodide perovskite (TEA2SnI4). The as-prepared TEA2SnI4 also possessed superior photostability, showing no sign of degradation under continuous irradiation (10 mW/cm2) over a period of 120 h.

The parameters of detector can play important roles in analyzing the nuclear pulses. When getting these parameters, we can establish the mathematical model of the detector output signal and then achieve amplitude, time and other information of pulse simultaneously by one measurement, which can further improve the utilization of the signal. In this paper, one 500 MHz digitization card was used to measure the pulses of a scintillator detector, and a bi-exponential mathematical model was used to fit the shape of the pulse, from which the decay time of the scintillator as well as the time constant of the PMT can be well obtained. Based on these parameters, the accurate energy spectrum measurement and the reconstruction of piled-up pulses are studied on. It was experimentally verified that this method can significantly improve the energy resolution, up to 6.31% at 661.7 keV for NaI detector (ϕ 40 mm × 40 mm). In addition, the piled-up pulses are well reconstructed. For detectors with a single fluorescence decay time, a bi-exponential model can be set and used to fit the output pulse to get the parameters of the detectors. This model can be applied to obtain energy spectrum, reconstruction pulse of pile-up and so on.

Eukaryotic initiation factor 5A2 (eIF5A2), as one of the two isoforms in the family, is reported to be a novel oncogenic protein that is involved in multiple aspects of many types of human cancer. Overexpression or gene amplification of EIF5A2 has been demonstrated in many cancers. Accumulated evidence shows that eIF5A2 initiates tumor formation, enhances cancer cell growth, increases cancer cell metastasis, and promotes treatment resistance through multiple means, including inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition, cytoskeletal rearrangement, angiogenesis, and metabolic reprogramming. Expression of eIF5A2 in cancer correlates with poor survival, advanced disease stage, as well as metastasis, suggesting that eIF5A2 function is crucial for tumor development and maintenance but not for normal tissue homeostasis. All these studies suggest that eIF5A2 is a useful biomarker in the prediction of cancer prognosis and serves as an anticancer molecular target. This review focuses on the expression, subcellular localization, post-translational modifications, and regulatory networks of eIF5A2, as well as its biochemical functions and evolving clinical applications in cancer, especially in human digestive system neoplasms.

In optical systems, one kind of exceptional point (EP) is associated with the maximally unidirectional reflection. Here, we theoretically show that the intrinsic chirality of this kind of EP is only determined by the sign of the scattering rate difference, and that these EPs could only be on or within a fundamental scattering bound in an asymmetric resonant system. As a proof of our theoretical deviation, a bianisotropic metasurface is designed to exhibit an extreme EP with a definite chirality on the fundamental scattering bound. In addition, another EP with the opposite chirality is also available within this scattering bound in the same metasurface without any additional symmetry operation. Numerical results are in good agreement with our theoretical predictions based on the coupled mode theory. We believe that our results not only provide physical insights to explore EPs in resonant systems, but also have implications in designing unidirectional absorbers and thermal emitters.

We show that inhomogeneous waveguides of slowly varied parity-time (PT) symmetry support localized optical resonances. The resonance is closely related to the formation of exceptional points separating exact and broken PT phases. Salient features of this kind of non-Hermitian resonance, including the formation of half-vortex flux and the discrete nature, are discussed. This investigation highlights the unprecedented uniqueness of field dynamics in non-Hermitian systems with many potential adaptive applications.

This study evaluates the prognostic role of carbohydrate antigen 19 to 9 (CA19-9) in predicting survival of pancreatic cancer patients. Literature search was conducted in electronic databases (Google Scholar, Ovid, PubMed, and Science Direct) and study selection was based on precise eligibility criteria. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to achieve overall estimates of median survival and hazard ratios (HRs) of survival with cutoff defined lower and higher CA19-9 levels before and after surgery or chemotherapy (CT)/radiotherapy (RT) and the changes in CA19-9 levels after any treatment. A total of 41 studies (6519 patients; 42% females; age 63.3 years [95% confidence interval [CI]: 62.2, 64.4]) were included. A pooled HR of 1.79 with a narrow 95% CI (1.58, 2.01) showed that higher CA19-9 levels or less decrease in CA19-9 levels after treatment predicted shorter survival. Median survival in patients with lower and higher preoperative CA19-9 levels was 23.2 months [95% CI: 17.2, 29.2] and 14.0 months [95% CI: 10.9, 17.2], respectively, whereas median survival with lower and higher postoperative CA19-9 levels was 25.0 months [95% CI: 21.9, 28.0] and 13.0 months [95% CI: 10.9, 15.0] respectively. Median survival with lower and higher pre-CT/RT CA19-9 levels was 11.9 months [95% CI: 10.2, 13.6] and 7.7 months [95% CI: 6.2, 9.2], respectively, whereas median survival with lower and higher post-CT/RT CA19-9 levels was 15.1 months [95% CI: 13.2, 17.0] and 10.7 months [95% CI: 7.3, 14.0] respectively. A decrease in CA19-9 levels after treatment was also associated with longer survival. Thus, both pretreatment and posttreatment CA19-9 levels or their changes after treatment have good prognostic value in determining the survival of pancreatic cancer patients.
