In recent era of modern and bendable technology, energy dearth arises as a paramount subject around the globe with a dire demand of flexible and lightweight energy storage devices. This study targets fabrication of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and utility of abundantly available, cost effective, and environment friendly lignocelluloses (LC) fibers extracted from Carica papaya source, as a binder to bind active material (rGO) as robust and compact paper sheet. Fabricated samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction for crystallographic analysis, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscope for morphology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for structural bonding, and Raman spectroscopy for vibrational modes. Robust and bendable rGO/LC paper electrode was tested for energy storage application by employing in different characterizations, i.e., cyclic voltammetry for capacitive behavior, galvanostatic charge–discharge for symmetric EDLC, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for resistive charge kinetics, respectively. rGO/LC composite sheet employed as working electrode in 3-electrode CV measurements and revealed specific capacitance of 591 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s by keeping the undistorted shape of voltammograms at higher scan rates which present it as a suitable candidate for modern flexible and energy storage devices. rGO/LC-based symmetric cell revealed the highest specific capacitance of 228 F/g at applied current density of 0.1 A/g, the energy density of 6.3 Wh/kg, and power density of 129 W/kg, respectively. rGO/LC-based symmetric cell confirmed the cycling stability by revealing capacitance retention of 82% after 200 cycles. It can conclude that biomass-based rGO paper sheet can be a potential candidate as environmentally safe with remarkable electrochemical activity in energy storage applications.

L -dopa is a chiral drug that has been extensively used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The concentration of L -dopa plays a vital role in the treatment, and this work emphasizes on designing a versatile platform for the quantitative and selective detection of L -dopa using reduced graphene quantum dot (rGQD). The platform is efficient in three different sensing methods, viz. fluorescence turn-on, filter paper-based sensing, and electronic measurements. The rGQD undergoes a dramatic fluorescence turn-on in the presence of L -dopa in aqueous media and artificial urine with a detection limit as low as 1.307 µM and 1.217 µM respectively. Experimental evidence revealed that the fluorescence enhancement is attributed to aggregation-induced emission mechanism. The system is also applicable for visual detection of L -dopa using filter paper strips treated with rGQD and develops bright fluorescence under ultra-violet irradiation. Apart from this, electrical sensors for L -dopa were also developed by preparing rGQD treated poly-vinyl alcohol films, and the increase in the current conduction with varying concentrations of L -dopa was observed. The films produce 2.5 order higher current conduction at 300 μM of L -dopa with a detection limit of about 13.136 µM. At the final stage, we have designed flexible electronic devices using these materials that develop 1.3 order higher current for L -dopa. The devices exhibit excellent air stability under varied relative humidity conditions as well as high bending stability for potential practical applications.

Traction transformers are one of the most important equipment in the traction power supply system. Thermal aging of transformer insulation system determines its reliable life. To achieve an estimation of the insulation life of traction power transformers operated under real load condition, the effects of traction loads on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers were investigated. First, the design principles for the accelerated thermal aging experiment were studied and proposed by considering magnitude (i.e., load rate) and frequency (i.e. spare time and lasting time) of the traction load. Then, an experimental system was established in the laboratory to conduct extensive accelerated thermal aging experiments, in which the traction loads were mimicked by using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating plates and a programmable logic controller (PLC). Finally, the experimental results were analyzed and discussed to reveal the effects of traction load on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers.

This paper utilizes a hybrid Debye model to accurately simulate the relaxation response process of the oil‐paper insulation of a transformer to explore the application of frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) in nondestructive diagnosis of the aging condition of oil‐paper insulation. Via FDS test data, the model parameters can be identified, and the influence laws of FDS can be obtained through the variation of model parameters. To explore the effects of insulating paper moisture content, insulating paper layers, and test temperature on FDS characteristics, an FDS experimental platform is established. The results show that the hybrid Debye model can effectively reflect the relaxation response process of oil‐paper insulation under different conditions, as well as that a physical relationship between the model parameters and oil‐paper dielectric polarization exists. In addition, the parameters of the hybrid Debye model can be used as the characteristic quantities for the non‐destructive evaluation of the oil‐paper insulation state, providing new ideas for the non‐destructive evaluation of the oil‐paper insulation state.

We propose a paper solar cell based on carbon nanotube (CNT)-composite papers. To fabricate this cell, we use dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) for generating power through the redox reaction of dyes in conjunction with CNT-composite papers, which are composite materials containing CNTs and pulp (raw paper material) that can be fabricated easily by using a method based on the Japanese washi papermaking technique. The demand for CNT applications is expected to increase due to their high conductivity and metallic or semiconducting characteristics. This CNT-composite paper can also have metallic or semiconducting characteristics based on the contained CNTs in the composite paper. We previously fabricated a DSC that generates electricity by using CNT-composite papers stacked in a typical DSC structure. However, the conversion efficiency of this DSC was just 0.188%, which is not practical. To overcome this low power generation issue, we tried improving the DSC structure by applying electrodes to the CNT-composite papers in grid patterns for efficient current collection and applying an optimally mixed dye for efficient electron excitation. Results showed that the conversion efficiency improved to 0.58%. Moreover, we demonstrated that using a mixed dye can improve the conversion efficiency of the paper DSC. We expect these types of CNT-composite papers to be used as material for new DSCs.

A simple, scalable approach is developed to fabricate a flexible hybrid paper electrode composed of the polyaniline/graphene and the carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced bacterial cellulose. The prepared hybrid paper presents high areal capacitance of 4.145 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2 and an extremely low sheet resistance of 29.7 Ω sq.−1. The CF endows the paper electrode remarkable foldability with no mechanical destruction. Even after being repeatedly bent 180° up to 1000 times, the initial capacitance can be retained up to 98%. A fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitor based on the resulting paper electrode has an excellent areal capacitance of 630 mF cm−2 and energy density of 2.8 mWh cm−3. The results confirm that this approach can fabricate the highly foldable and shape-tailorable energy storage devices and may have wide potential applications.

Flexible and lightweight shielding materials recently have attracted increasing attention for terahertz wave due to the deteriorated performance of electronic equipment interferenced by electromagnetic yielding. Herein, flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) papers were prepared by solution evaporation method to attenuate the electromagnetic wave in terahertz field. They exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and remarkable electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. The electrical conductivity of the rGO papers was improved from 54.07 to 78.67 S/cm after annealing at 400 °C. The rGO paper annealed at 400 °C was only ~ 370 µm in thickness and particularly exhibited an outstanding absorption performance of 17.6 dB at 0.7 THz. It has been found that the maximum absorption performance of rGO papers was basically equivalent to that of the metamaterials. Moreover, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 72.1 dB of the rGO papers was obtained at 0.6 THz, which indicated that ~ 99.99% of the power was shielded. Thus, the flexible rGO papers maybe a promising candidate for optimized electromagnetic shielding materials in the terahertz band.

This Editorial introduces a Special Issue of papers from the SEE International Conference RADAR 2019, which took place in Toulon, France, 23–27 September 2019. The papers are expanded versions of ones that were judged in the reviewing process to be of the highest quality and relevance. Benefitting from the unique location of the conference centre on the French Riviera, the conference was given the theme ‘Sensing from sea to space’, attracting nearly 400 attendees from 26 countries from all over the world (Figure 1). Engineers and researchers coming from private or public sector (universities and laboratories) shared their knowledge and experience on radar topics of common interests from physics to signal processing, from sensor validation to system design, and also on emerging technologies based on artificial intelligence; all topics being supported by 200 papers presented either in oral (150 papers in 36 sessions), or poster sessions (50 papers). In this study, we present fully printed organic electrochemical transistors using an active layer of PEDOT:PSS, carbon electrodes, cellulose-based electrolyte, and three different papers as substrates: bond, vegetal, and Lumi Silk, relating the electrical properties to the different morphologies of the paper surfaces. Each paper presents different regularity, diffusion capabilities, and roughness, with significant influence on the transistor performance. The more organized and smooth the surface, the better the electrical characteristics, the best of these being the Lumi Silk, with higher I on/I off ratio of 46, on-current of 8.3 10-5 A, V on of 1.3 V, and power gain of 43.5 dB associated with ultra-low hysteresis of 0.1 V, high transconductance of -57.3 μS, and suitablity for flexible electronics and sensors applications. The photon energy of terahertz waves is of the order of a few milli-electronvolts and is much lower than the thermal energy of ~ 26 meV at room temperature. However, the fast and sensitive detection of terahertz waves is notoriously difficult at ambient conditions. Moreover, the material flexibility is also very important within existing terahertz technologies for development of wearable and portable terahertz devices. We experimentally demonstrate that multiwall carbon nanotube flexible paper (MWCNT-FP) is one of the potential candidates to be used for terahertz detectors at room temperature. For the first time, MWCNT-FP sample is measured over a wide frequency band ranging from 0.02 to 4.5 THz at room temperature as compared to previously reported materials that demonstrate prominent frequency response between 0.2 and 2.5 THz. The MWCNT-FP sample delivered wide band absorption between 0.02 and 4.0 THz. Over the transmission, a high absorption peak is detected at 1.0 THz. The optical density spectrum is observed around 1.25 and 3.37 THz in the low-frequency regime and high-frequency regime, respectively. The present results suggest the potential application of MWCNT-FP as a wearable THz detector.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-03-04 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) We present a capacitive smart sensor based on printed circuit board (PCB) technology to measure the amount of water content in a paper pulp at the wet end of a paper machine. The developed sensor incorporates in the same PCB the signal processing circuits. It is a handheld portable device, and its output is sent to the reading equipment using a Bluetooth wireless connection, providing to the sensor's operator ease of mobility around the wet end of a paper machine. The prototype was tested in a laboratory, using a wire mesh to emulate the end of a paper machine, and we were able to measure and easily detect when it reaches the water content in the range of 90% to 92%, as required in the paper fabrication process. Standard deviation of the capacitance measurements at various moisture levels is four orders of magnitude smaller than the mean. The smart sensor was tested in the 20 degrees C to 40 degrees C temperature range, in a paper pulp with a gravimetric water content of 91%. Since the variation of capacitance with temperature is practically linear, we propose a simple linear compensation equation to correct the observed sensitivity with the temperature. To keep the signal processing circuits small, low cost, simple, and robust, a novel direct interface sensor to microcontroller circuit technique was used to make the capacitive measurement, allowing for measuring small capacitance deviations without high-frequency oscillators. It was shown that it is possible to integrate the signal processing circuits in the top layer of the PCB interdigitated sensor without adding noise or degrading the performance of the capacitive sensor. Highlights The superior conductivity and unique porous electrode structure in the TiN paper enable fast charging by simultaneously providing efficient ion diffusion and electron transport. Most ultrafast-charging devices are made of carbonaceous materials such as chemically converted graphene and carbon nanotubes. Yet, their relatively low electrical conductivity may restrict their performance at ultrahigh charging rate. Here, we report the fabrication of a porous titanium nitride (TiN) paper as an alternative electrode material for ultrafast-charging devices. The TiN paper shows an excellent conductivity of 3.67 × 104 S m−1, which is considerably higher than most carbon-based electrodes. The paper-like structure also contains a combination of large pores between interconnected nanobelts and mesopores within the nanobelts. This unique electrode enables fast charging by simultaneously providing efficient ion diffusion and electron transport. The supercapacitors (SCs) made of TiN paper enable charging/discharging at an ultrahigh scan rate of 100 V s−1 in a wide voltage window of 1.5 V in Na2SO4 neutral electrolyte. It has an outstanding response time with a characteristic time constant of 4 ms. Significantly, the TiN paper-based SCs also show zero capacitance loss after 200,000 cycles, which is much better than the stability performance reported for other metal nitride SCs. Furthermore, the device shows great promise in scalability. The filtration method enables good control of the thickness and mass loading of TiN electrodes and devices. Humidity sensors are indispensable for various electronic systems and instrumentations. To develop a new humidity sensing mechanism is the key for the next generation of sensor technology. In this work, a novel flexible paper-based current humidity sensor is proposed. The developed alternating current electroluminescent devices (ACEL) consist of the electroless plating Ni on filter paper and silver nanowires (AgNWs) as the bottom and upper electrodes, and ZnS:Cu as the phosphor layer, respectively. The proposed humidity sensor is based on ACEL with the paper substrate and the ZnS:Cu phosphor layer as the humidity sensing element. The moisture effect on the optical properties of ACELs has been studied firstly. Then, the processing parameters of the paper-based ACELs such as electroless plated bottom electrode and spin-coated phosphor layer as a function of the humidity-sensitive characteristics are investigated. The sensing mechanism of the proposed sensor has been elucidated based on the Q ~ V analysis. The sensor exhibits an excellent linearity ( R 2 = 0.99965 ) within the humidity range from 20% to 90% relative humidity (RH) and shows excellent flexibility. We also demonstrate its potential application in postharvest preservation where the EL light is used for preservation and the humidity can be monitored simultaneously through the current.

Paper-based sensors fabricated using the pencil-on-paper method are expected to find wide usage in many fields owing to their low cost and high reproducibility. Here, hydrogen (H2) detection was realized by applying palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) to electronic circuits printed on paper using a metal mask and a pencil. We confirmed that multilayered graphene was produced by the pencil, and then characterized Pd NPs were added to the pencil marks. To evaluate the gas-sensing ability of the sensor, its sensitivities and reaction rates in the presence and absence of H2 were measured. In addition, sensing tests performed over a wide range of H2 concentrations confirmed that the sensor had a detection limit as low as 1 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor reacted within approximately 50 s at all H2 concentrations tested. The recovery time of the sensor was 32 s at 1 ppm and 78 s at 1000 ppm. Sensing tests were also performed using Pd NPs of different sizes to elucidate the relationship between the sensing rate and catalyst size. The experimental results confirmed the possibility of fabricating paper-based gas sensors with a superior sensing capability and response rate.

Recently, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has aroused considerable interest due to various advantages. Particularly, one benefit which sand out is that the triboelectric pair of TENG is very tolerant to the material composition. Thus, it is possible and significant to develop cost-effective TENG using commercial and inexpensive material. In this work, we present a paper TENG by repeated folding completely using commercially available commodity materials, such as paper, brush pen, Teflon tape, and conductive ink. Paper is used as functionally triboelectric pair and spring-like supporting structure. The stacked paper TENG is fabricated and large enhancement of output performance is observed. The generated electric outputs have been used to directly light-up commercial LEDs. The proposed TENG has demonstrated simplicity and cost-effective, which is suitable for flexible electronics.

In the last decade, much effort has been invested in using methanol as an oil-soluble chemical marker for assessing the condition of insulating paper. The use of this marker as paper life index presents many advantages particularly with new transformers insulated with thermally upgraded papers. However, until now, no interpretation model has been available for its extensive use by the transformer community. In this paper, a methanol-based interpretation model is presented for the first time using postmortem paper analysis on core-type transformers. This model allows the evaluation of the average degree of polymerization of a transformer's cellulose winding. Furthermore, threshold values based on the methanol concentration are given using this approach. Finally, model validation was performed on a limited number of papers taken from transformers being assessed in the repair shop.

When portability, low cost, and green energy requirements are considered, the search for an electricity generator harvesting environmental energy based on available cheap commercial materials and simple fabrication techniques becomes significantly important. In this study, the capability of ultrasoft and cuttable paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (P-TENG) to harvest mechanical energy is demonstrated. The P-TENG maintains the excellent softness of tissue paper and has the characteristics of light weight (~ 87 g/m2), high electric conductivity (6 Ω/square), and low cost (~ $3.00/m2). More importantly, the P-TENG can be cut by the end-user to modify its size and shape and still function properly. The mechanical energies available during cleaning processes, the energy associated with the body's motion, sound energy, and wind energy can be directly harvested by using the P-TENG. The high portability of the P-TENG, the simple and scalable fabrication processes, low cost, and its ability to harvest mechanical energy make the P-TENG important for the development of green, portable, energy-harvesting devices.

Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) is proposed as a suitable diagnostic method in this paper for implementation on energized oil-paper insulation systems. In present FDS tests, the measurement method is only designed for offline applications. To overcome the deficiencies with the offline testing, this work investigates the feasibility of performing FDS measurements on energized transformers with the view to developing an online diagnostic tool using neutral connections as injection and measurement paths. In the proposed technique, a low-pass filter system is designed to remove the high frequency noise as well as the power frequency signals present in the measured neutral currents. The technique has been successfully applied in a laboratory environment on transformers with oil-paper insulation systems with different operational ages and is feasible for single-phase as well as 3-phase transformers with the accessible neutral points. Compared with the conventional FDS results, a nonlinear dielectric phenomenon is observed from the energized insulation systems as higher dissipation factor Tanδ values primarily due to the increased losses under power frequency voltage excitation. The degree of the nonlinearity is found to correlate well with the degradation status of insulation systems under test.

This paper presents a wavelet texture analysis of microscopy images acquired from artificially-aged samples of power transformer winding insulation paper. Oil-impregnated Kraft paper samples are prepared for experimental tests where they are thermally stressed in an oven at temperatures above what would normally occur in operation. This accelerated ageing test arrangement is used to produce a set of paper samples with varying levels of insulation deterioration. From the paper samples, microscopy images of the paper surface are obtained using a standard optical microscope. These microscopic images are analyzed using a texture analysis method that utilizes a two-dimensional wavelet transform to extract detailed information from the wavelet decomposition coefficient matrices. These features are analyzed to assess how the texture of paper changes in response to thermal deterioration and ageing. The results suggest that the texture features are correlated to the commonly-used degree of polymerization test. Additionally, statistical classification is performed on the wavelet texture features using both supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods. The results demonstrate that differentiation between oil-impregnated paper samples with different levels of thermal degradation using wavelet texture analysis is effective.

The electrical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of a flexible electrode consisting of carbon nanotubes on paper were investigated under various conditions. The main driving motivation was to develop a durable and flexible film for conductive electrode applications. The general characteristics of the electrode based on carbon nanotubes were found to be sensitive to coating sequence and aging temperature and duration. The number of coatings can be used to tune network density and form a well entangled carbon nanotube layer on paper. Aging temperature was found to be critical to electrical characteristics, and 60 °C was determined to be the optimal aging temperature. At higher temperatures, calcium oxide contained in the paper may form carbonates, which change the structure of the paper, and the carbon nanotubes can be oxidized, which led to reduced electrical performance. The mechanical durability tests revealed that the electrode was functional up to a 3 mm bending radius.

This direct laser writing method was applied to the fabrication of graphene-based, in-plane interdigitated micro-supercapacitors (mu-SCs), prepared on free-standing GO paper (10 mu m thick). The electrochemical performance of mu-SCs was studied using two different electrolytes (KOH and NaCl). The results from cyclic voltammetry measurements exhibited typical electrical double layer behavior, with specific capacitances of 9.3 mu F/cm(2) and 13.8 mu F/cm(2) (at a scan rate of 10 mV/s) for KOH and NaCl electrolytes, respectively. The mu-SCs exhibited good performance, with retention of 95% of the original capacitance values after 3400 charge-discharge cycles. When compared to devices obtained by conventional lithographic techniques, the laser fabrication of planar mu-SCs is faster, cost-effective and scalable. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a powerful technique with the advantages of high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range. However, most of previous strategies based on ECL could only detect one analyte so that it is inevitable to investigate the selectivity and influences of interferences. Herein ECL integrated with paper chromatography was showed to be a potential platform for separation and detection of two environmental hormones (bisphenol A, BPA, and dibutyl phthalate, DBP). In our approach, carbon conductive tape was attached to an ITO glass and then modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and CdSe quantum dot (CdSe QDs) to fabricate the working electrodes for ECL detection. The synthesis of CdSe QDs was optimized based on their photoluminescence spectra and the ECL intensities. The modified electrode was then coupled in the paper-based analytical devices consisting of the filter paper modified with chitosan. Based on their quenching effect on the ECL emission of CdSe QDs, excellent linear relationships could be obtained between decreased ECL intensities and both the concentrations of DBP and BPA. Besides, DBP and BPA could be separated based on their retention time by tilting the filter paper for 30° and then detected with ECL. This study suggested that paper-based analytical devices could be potentially applied for separation and detection of multiple targets due to their ease of fabrication and convenient operation.

Managing a large fleet of ageing assets has become a technical challenge faced by many electricity utilities in developed countries. Asset managers are increasingly interested in techniques that can help extend the useful lifetime of a transformer. Oil regeneration is one of such techniques. In this paper, oil regeneration experiments were performed on a 6.4/0.4 kV retired distribution transformer to investigate the effect of oil regeneration on improving paper conditions. Oil regeneration was conducted in two stages, with the first stage aimed at ‘cleaning the oil’ and the second stage targeted at ‘cleaning the paper’. Oil samples were collected at regular intervals throughout the process and paper samples were obtained from the transformer before and after each oil regeneration stage. It was found that oil regeneration restores oil parameters, including moisture and acidity, similar to those of new oils at the end of stage 1. Analysis of paper samples indicated a reduction in paper moisture at the end of stage 2 by nearly 40%, while low molecular weight acids (LMA) in paper exhibited a reduction by around 30% on average. It is found that the extended oil regeneration period, i.e., stage 2, is necessary to improve the paper condition and hence to reduce the paper ageing rate.

Aging of transformer paper insulation is commonly investigated through indirect measurements conducted in the oil, e.g. furanic compounds. In addition to the conventional indicators, recent investigations showed that alcohols like methanol and ethanol in oil could be used as paper aging indicators. This paper focuses on the applicability of these new paper aging indicators in a novel, gas-to-liquid (GTL) technology based transformer oil through an accelerated laboratory aging experiment. The experiment was conducted at 120 °C for up to 280 days. A conventional mineral oil was also tested as a reference. Kraft paper aged in both oil types showed similar reductions in degree of polymerization (DP) and tensile strength (TS). Amount of methanol in oil is higher than that of 2-FAL in oil when DP is over 375, confirming the promise of using methanol as an early paper aging indicator. Both the new paper aging indicator, methanol and the conventional paper aging indicator, 2-FAL are applicable for the GTL oil without any modifications. In addition, oil only aging experiments showed that oil does produce methanol but it is negligible compared with oil paper aging experiment; however the amount of ethanol measured in the present oil paper aging experiment is believed to be originated from oil oxidation rather than from paper aging.

The realization of optoelectronic devices on paper has been an outstanding challenge due to the large surface roughness and incompatible nature of paper with optical materials. Here, we demonstrate a new class of optoelectronic devices on a piece of printing paper using graphene as an electrically reconfigurable optical medium. Our approach relies on electro-modulation of optical properties of multilayer graphene on paper via blocking the interband electronic transitions. The paper based devices yield high optical contrast in the visible spectrum with fast response speed. Pattering graphene into multiple pixels, folding paper into 3-dimensional shapes or printing coloured ink on paper substrates enable us to demonstrate novel optoelectronic devices which cannot be realized with wafer-based techniques., Work has been published in ACS Photonics. Several miniaturized viscometers, or microviscometers, have been developed exploiting numerous rapid prototyping techniques. Among them, paper microstrips, famously known as microfluidic paper-based analytical devices ( $\mu $ PADs), have become popular due to their cost-efficacy, simple fabrication, fast response, and easily disposable. Many fabrication methods are existing to develop paper microstrips. Herein, an alternative fabrication method is proposed where fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3-D printer (3DP) has been employed using polycaprolactone (PCL) filament. F, image processing has been utilized to measure viscosity in such microfluidic domain. Viscosity was calculated by measuring the time taken by the fluid to cover a fixed length between two spots in the microchannel based on the programed and color-coded regions-of-interest. The image processing program was developed considering the change in the gray scale in the virtual region of interests (ROIs) in the microchannel during the fluid flow in the paper microstrips. A 3-D printed handheld platform, containing raspberry pi with on-board camera and display, was developed to execute the image processing and automate the entire work flow. In the proposed device, the accuracy was measured to be >92%.

Cellulosic insulation materials are very widely used in power transformers, in designs up to 1,500 MVA [1]. Cellulosic insulation is formed of either wood, pressboard, or Kraft paper. The wood and thick sections of pressboard are used to manufacture the base of the transformer; pressboard is also used for the spacers and barriers of the windings, and the paper is wrapped around the current carrying conductors. The water content of this cellulosic insulation must be monitored, because if it becomes too high, a transformer can fail on overload, and will reach the end of its functional life sooner because the paper insulation will age faster [2]. Eventually, the paper will become brittle, and will either tear or lift off the conductor. The water content of paper (WCP) is the ratio of the mass of adsorbed water to the mass of dry paper, usually expressed as a percentage. Water can migrate out of the wood and pressboard and around the system, eventually increasing the WCP. If the WCP becomes too high, the transformer may be dried out by the relevant utility [3].

Flexible In2O3 nanowire transistors gated by microporous SiO2-based solid electrolytes are fabricated on paper substrates at room temperature. Low-voltage (1.0 V) operation of these devices is realized owing to the large electric-double-layer capacitance of (1.73 μF/cm2 at 20 Hz) of the microporous SiO2 solid electrolytes, which were deposited at room temperature. The subthreshold swing, current on/off ratio, and field-effect mobility of the paper-based nanowire transistors are estimated to be 74 mV/decade, 1.7×106, and 218.3 cm2/V·s, respectively. These low-voltage paper-based nanowire transistors show promise for use in portable flexible paper electronics and low-cost portable sensors.

Vegetal oils are considered a suitable substitute for mineral oil that is widely used in power transformers as insulation and cooling medium. Due to the fact that more and more power transformers containing this alternative insulating fluid are being constructed a mathematical ageing models is needed to help predict transformer failures. The continued performance of power transformers depends on the condition of its paper insulation mainly. In this sense, this paper analyses Kraft paper degradation through the loss of its mechanical strength. Accelerated thermal ageing test of the paper in two different vegetal oils were carried out at three temperatures during diverse periods of time, in order to obtain information on the kinetics of the ageing degradation of the paper. The evolution of the mechanical properties of paper failure are analysed as a function of temperature and ageing time. In addition, the results obtained are compared with the traditional method of degradation analysis, based on the measurement of the degree of polymerisation. All-inkjet-printing of transistors has received much attention for low cost and flexible integrated circuits. However, most flexible field-effect transistors (FETs) based on the emerging two-dimensional materials suffer from the high cost of substrate and electrode materials. The requirements for high-temperature synthesis and precise control in processing add another layer of complexity. To overcome these issues, low-cost flexible paper-based MoS2 FETs were fabricated by inkjet printing of MoS2 channel materials on paper. Additionally, we proposed and achieved the mask-less and low-temperature formation of source and drain electrodes on paper using in-situ selective-area copper reduction. A low sub-threshold swing of 80 mV/dec, high on/off ratio of 105, and very high turn-on current (Ion) of 200 μA of the paper-based flexible MoS2 FETs were demonstrated using the proposed low-cost and facile all-inkjet-printing technique. The all-inkjet-printing technique assisted by in-situ copper reduction opens new opportunities for low-cost and batch fabrication of paper-based electronic devices in ambient conditions.

Purpose Inspired by the development of eco-friendly flexible electronics, this paper aims to present a series of paper-based electronics drawn by pencils, which can be used as favorable sensing elements in daily life. Design/methodology/approach Pencil traces are deposited on the porous surface of Xerox paper by the mechanical exfoliation during writing process, which can be used as basic components to construct functional electronics for daily sensing applications. By changing pencil grade, the obtained traces can work as conductive wires, electrodes, resistors and piezoresistive gauges. Findings The experimental results confirm their practical applications in sensing several daily activities, including finger motion, touching and the temperature of water in paper cup. Moreover, the used electronics can be easily handled and recycled. Research limitations/implications The shortage in functionality, reliability and performance consistency induced by manual operation is an evident challenge, which makes the pencil-on-paper devices more suitable to work as a temporary solution to satisfying the demands from emergency circumstances. Originality/value The pencil-on-paper devices, motivated by the electroconductibility and piezoresistivity of pencil trace, can be explored as sensing prototypes in detecting daily activities. Meantime, their advances in easy accessibility, rapid fabrication, low cost and eco-fitness endow them excellent capacity of meeting the “on-site, real-time” demands.

Contamination of water bodies due to the disposal of natural and anthropogenic pollutants is one of the major global concerns in the recent times. Regular on-spot monitoring of water quality has become mandatory wherein diverse classes of materials such as organic, inorganic, heavy metals, or biological wastes are detected employing standard protocols. However, most of the existing laboratory techniques are either costly and/or time consuming owing to the process involving the expert driven sophisticated analysis techniques. Herein, we report the development of three paper based colorimetric sensors for the on-spot quantitative detection of the levels of fluoride (F−), lead (Pb2+), and pH in drinking water. The variations in the color-intensities of the paper sensors with the variation in the concentration of fluoride (F−), lead (Pb2+), and pH were converted into electronic signals to enable the development of a point-of-care-testing (POCT) device. For this purpose, initially, the sensors were characterized and calibrated with known concentrations of contaminates before successful validations with real samples. Thereafter, the sensors were illuminated with a light emitting diode from one side while the transmitted rays passing through the sensor was captured by a light dependent resistor (LDR) from the other side. The variation in the color intensity of the paper-sensor with the contaminant loading was found linearly varying with the resistance of the LDR. The sensor was then translated into a specific, stable and user friendly POCT device, which enabled inexpensive spot detection of pollutants in drinking water.

The Electric Field and Voltage Distribution (EFVD) are an important parameter for assessing high voltage bushing transformer performance. However, conducting laboratories experiment is dangerous, difficult and expensive due to several aspects. Therefore, Finite Element Method (FEM) software is the best option used as a tool for the assessment of bushing transformer's performance in terms of EFVD. But, before an assessment of analysis could be carried out, an accurate model of bushing transformer must first to be designed. In this research, Computer Aided Design (CAD) software has been employed to design the 145kV bushing transformer based on actual dimension. Upon completion, the design has been exported to FEM software for further analysis. In FEM software, measurement and analysis of electric field and voltage distribution (EFVD) have been carried out. The measurements are performed at various locations of bushing transformer such as of the porcelain surface (both air and oil side), along with aluminum foils, and at oil-impregnated paper (OIP). The results obtained have been compared with other researchers and it is found very satisfactory.

This paper presents a comparison between four gasification-based biorefineries integrated with a pulp and paper mill. It is a continuation of 'Transportation fuel production from gasified biomass integrated with a pulp and paper mill - Part A: Heat integration and system performance'. Synthesis into methanol, Fischer-Tropsch crude or synthetic natural gas, or electricity generation in a gas turbine combined cycle, were evaluated. The concepts were assessed in terms of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and economic performance. Net annual profits were positive for all biofuel cases for an annuity factor of 0.1 in the year 2030; however, the results are sensitive to biofuel selling prices and CO2,eq charge. Additionally, GHG emissions from grid electricity are highly influential on the results since all biofuel processes require external power. Credits for stored CO2 might be necessary for processes to be competitive, i.e. storage of separated CO2 from the syngas conditioning has an important role to play. Without CO2 storage, the gas turbine case is better than, or equal to, biofuels regarding GHG emissions. Efficiency measures at the host mill prior to heat integration of a gasification process are beneficial from the perspective of GHG emissions, while having a negative impact on the economy.

At present, the insulation performances of electrical apparatus under lightning impulse voltages are always evaluated by the withstand test of standard lightning impulse voltage (1.2/50 µs), which is recommended by IEC Standard. However, the actual time parameters of transformer invading lightning impulse voltage present an obvious dispersibility characteristics. The standard wave shape is only representative of one particular class of lightning waves, which is far from satisfactory to act as the guidance waveform in the design of power equipment insulation. On the basis of the above research background, the relationship between breakdown characteristics of oil paper insulation and time parameters of applied lightning impulse voltage was investigated in this study. The 50% breakdown voltage characteristics of oil paper insulation under lightning impulse voltage with different time parameters were determined. The test results indicate that a short wave front time could lead to relatively low 50% breakdown voltage, while when the wave tail time varied, the 50% breakdown voltage of oil paper insulation barely changed. At last the simulation model of oil paper insulation was developed, and the current flowing through the oil paper insulating system under lightning impulse voltage was calculated. On the basis of the simulating results, the relationship between current and time parameters was analysed.

Paper mill sludge (PMS) can be efficiently utilized to produce fuels and chemicals. However, wastewater is usually generated during the de-ashing step of the PMS for fibrous materials recovery. Per process requirements, the wastewater stream must be treated which results in an increase in the overall process production cost. Therefore, this research aims at reusing the wastewater produced during the de-ashing step as a substitute for freshwater addition during the conversion of PMS into ethanol. The advantages of this approach include reducing the amount of wastewater produced and enhancing the overall efficiency of the process. It will contribute to the circular economy of zero waste discharges. The results showed that 30% of the process wastewater can be recycled without affecting the enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation. Hence, the amount of wastewater that needs to be treated is reduced by 30% resulting in a cost reduction of 22.5%. The results also showed that wastewater recycling minimized the energy demands in the distillation and evaporation units by 1206 kJ/kg. The energy reduction is due to the increase of metals and total soluble solids in the broth stream after fermentation. This process configuration enhanced the process economy, saved energy and managed waste streams.

Airborne particulate matter has become an emerging issue globally due to environmental degradation and the health risk it causes. Volatilization of weakly adsorbed particles onto quartz filter paper (QFP) limits its performance. The adsorption of particulate matter ( P M 10 ) onto QFP coated with different concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) was investigated to enhance the adsorption potential. Hummer’s method was adopted to synthesize GO. QFPs were coated with different concentrations of GO using a spin coating technique to optimize the result. The morphology and microstructure of GO-QFP were characterized by various experimental techniques, like XRD, FTIR, EDX, and SEM. GO showed considerable affinity to aerosol particles for GO-QFP weighing 5 mg/ml, whereas adsorption of the coated samples before and after was significantly reduced. The high affinity to aerosol particles was due to dominated π - π interactions and the grooved regions formed on the GO layer. It was considered that the high surface to volume ratio of GO-QFP improves the adsorptive property of the QF and consequently enhances the performance of the filter paper.

Oil soluble chemical markers such as methanol, ethanol and 2-furaldehyde for assessing the condition of insulating paper still present many challenges for an accurate interpretation in real transformers. Indeed, many conceptual parameters such as design (shell vs. core) or type of cooling are needed for a more accurate interpretation of the data. Moreover, similarly to water, the measured marker concentrations in oil are temperature-dependent, i.e. an existing partition phenomenon between the oil and the solid insulation modify the solubility of the markers, thus changing their apparent concentrations in the oil. Consequently, to follow the real trend of these species during the transformer’s service life, it is crucial to correct their concentrations at a specific temperature, as is done for the water content. Knowing these facts and in order to calibrate a predictive model, Hydro-Quebec decided to access equipment when dismantled, which enables a large amount of paper to be sampled from different sections of the windings. This allows for a more accurate representation of the transformer paper conditions in relation to transformer design. The paper condition obtained by measuring the degree of polymerization in accordance with the presence of chemical markers is a valuable process. We believe that it is possible to better understand the behavior of the paper insulation and to assess markers concentration thresholds using the oil analysis. This article discusses the recent experience in this field with specific cases.

Transformer oil, insulating paper, high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings and on-load tap changer (OLTC) are essential parts of converter transformers. When the power flow of the HVDC system is reversed or a sudden outrage occurs, the charge field will deform the dielectric internal electric field, thus easily leading to the occurrence of discharge or insulation damage. In this case, it is necessary to carry out the characterization of the oil–paper interface to avoid these consequences. This paper analyses the interface charge accumulation and dissipation characteristics of an oil–paper insulation system under DC and polarity reversal voltages. In this paper, induced electrification was used to charge the composite oil–paper insulation. The amplitude of DC and polarity reversal voltages applied in this paper was 4 kV, and paper with thicknesses of 0.08 and 0.13 mm was used. This research offers a theoretical exploration to optimize the transformer oil– paper insulation structure and prevent damage to its insulation systems. From the research on different layers and thicknesses of paper, it can be concluded that the decay is fast in the initial period and then becomes slower with the lapse of time until finally the decay curve tends to become flat. With an increase in the number of the paper layers, the interface charge density decreases. So in real life multilayer paper is used to avoid failures owing to its structural weakness. Regarding the DC polarity reversal effect, increasing the thickness of the paper is equivalent to adding paper layers. The dissipation rate of the positive interface charge is quicker than that of the negative one. In the polarity reversal test, the dissipation rate becomes smaller as the reversal time gets longer.

Single-electrode mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), as an emerging and efficient sustainable power source, is highly sought to develop a low-cost fabrication process for the mass production at the commercial level. In this paper, we report an easy protocol for the fabrication of graphite coated paper (GCP) based electrode along with its application in highly flexible single electrode mode TENG for converting waste environmental energy to electricity. This GCP exhibits an excellent flexibility and hydrophobicity with sheet resistance of ~1.5 kΩ sq−1. GCP-TENG is made up of polytetrafluoroethylene film tape, as the triboelectric layer, and GCP, as the conductive single electrode as well as its roll to roll fabrication was demonstrated. By efficiently harvesting hand tapping energy, GCP-TENG can generate a maximum open-circuit voltage up to ~320 V and a maximum short-circuit current density of ~0.8 μA cm−2, sufficient for charging capacitors and power Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with rectifying circuits. We also demonstrated that GCP-TENG can efficiently work when adjoined with the skin of Pig leading to an effective harvesting of energy from the physical motion of animal. To indicate the universal usage of GCP-TENG, a wide range of common materials, such as paper, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), wood, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and fabrics like cotton and nylon, concluded in effective electrical outputs when contacted with GCP-TENG. The widespread mechanical energy in nature associated with wind and water energy can be directly harvested by GCP-TENG, thus, it can be a promising sustainable tool for obtaining waste environmental energy from our daily activities, e.g., skin-touch actuated electronics, wearable/patchable self-powered sensory system, etc.

We use origami to create a compact, scalable three-dimensional (3-D) biobattery stack that delivers on-demand energy to the portable biosensors. Folding allows a two-dimensional (2-D) paper sheet possessing predefined functional components to form nine 3-D microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and connect them serially within a small and single unit (5.6 cm × 5.6 cm). We load the biocatalyst Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 in predefined areas that form the MFCs, and freeze-dry them for long-term storage. The biobattery stack generates a maximum power and current of 20 μW and 25 μA, respectively, via microbial metabolism when the freeze-dried cells are rehydrated with readily available wastewater. This work establishes an innovative strategy to revolutionize the fabrication, storage, operation, and application of paper-based MFCs, which could potentially make energy available even in resource-limited settings.

It is now well-established that moisture in the oil paper insulation used in power and instrument transformers significantly reduces the transformers’ lifetimes, and can eventually lead to premature failure. This moisture should, therefore, always be removed, not only during production but also after repairs. At the final stage of manufacturing, the drying process should be carried out to remove water and air vacuoles contained in the cellulose-based paper before impregnation. Successful drying helps increase the residual life of transformers, because the presence of moisture and air vacuoles accelerates the aging/degradation process of the oil paper insulation. Proper estimation of residual moisture before impregnation and the determination of the time required for drying play key roles in the time-consuming process of drying. In this paper, the disadvantages of inadequate drying are addressed, followed by a mathematical approach to model the paper drying process. A mathematical model describing the kinetics of drying according to temperature, initial moisture, paper weight, final moisture, and extraction rate is proposed. This model also estimated the amount of moisture removed at the end of the drying process.

This article presents a compact, low-cost, robust, and flexible test platform for determining the concentration of drugs in fluids. This device is based on a PVC foil card containing copper conductive foils in which disposable paper test strips are inserted. The paper test strips are overlaid with deposition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) acting as a sensing layer. When a paper test strip is inserted into the test card, the conductive path between two copper lines is established. A drop of test fluid on the sensing MWCNT layer changes the conductivity in a concentration-dependent manner, enabling calculation of the drug concentration after measurement of the electrical resistance at the copper terminals. An equivalent electrical circuit was also proposed to model the response of the fabricated sensor. It was shown that model parameters are dependent on the concentration of the cytostatic drug methotrexate. Additionally, the fabricated sensor demonstrated the ability to differentiate the same concentration of methotrexate and cyclophosphamide. The complete readout electronics and polynomial transfer function for calculating drug concentrations were also developed and are presented.

Это позволяет повысить разрывную длину бумаги, белизну, непрозрачность, цветовосприятие и устойчивость печати, снизить линейную деформацию бумаги, The study presents results of the design of a paper wrapping material, which simultaneously possesses high functional (strength and opacity), aesthetic (whiteness), and technological properties (color acceptance and print sharpness). The latter is a particularly important element in the marketing strategy of food manufacturers because it enables creation of the packaging that is attractive to consumer and thus may increase sales.According to results of the conducted study, it was found that the set of proposed activities could increase discontinuous paper length to over than 5000 m and opacity to 92 %, while the linear deformation is reduced by 2–2.5 times in comparison with the analogue. The introduction of titanium dioxide as a filler to the paper pulp provides a whiteness level of 88 %. The use of polyvinyl alcohol fiber enhances color acceptance and print stability. This is due to the creation of resistance to the plucking of fibers and particles of the filler by paint during printing and friction. The inherent advantages of reflective e-paper displays (EPD) – wide viewing direction range and excellent readability even under bright sunlight – can be extended into low-light conditions by the addition of an integrated lighting unit (ILU) such as a front light. A methodology for predicting the viewing direction dependence of ambient contrast and color from display measurements and illumination models is here applied to reflective EPD where the ILU is switched on. The predictions can be used to optimize task lighting. The ILU improves the indoor performance of EPD without compromising their superior daylight performance.

This manuscript presents a comprehensive literature review with the aim to provide readers a reference document with up-to-date information on the field of methanol use as a chemical marker. It has been a little more than a decade since methanol was first introduced as a marker for assessing solid insulation condition in power transformers. It all started when methanol was identified in the laboratory during thermal ageing tests carried out with oil-immersed insulating papers and was subsequently also identified in transformer field samples. The first publication on the subject was released in 2007 by our research group. This review covers the methanol fundamentals such as the analytical methods for its determination in transformer oil, which is generally performed by headspace gas chromatography with mass spectrometry or flame ionization as a detector. Current standardization efforts for its determination include ASTM working group 30948 and IEC TC10. Kinetic studies have confirmed the relationship between methanol generation, the number of broken 1,4-β-glycosidic bonds of cellulose and changes in mechanical properties. Laboratory tests have confirmed its stability at different accelerated ageing temperatures. Several utilities have identified methanol during field measurements, case studies on power and some distribution transformers are presented, as well as transformer postmortem investigations. These field-testing results demonstrate its utility in monitoring cellulosic insulation degradation. Recently, a model of methanol interpretation has become available that allows for evaluation of the average degree of polymerization of core type transformer cellulose winding. Methanol has a role as an indicator of cellulosic solid insulation ageing in transformer mineral oil, and it is expected that in the future it will be in routine use by utilities.

Utilizing the kinetic energy of a flowing river for irrigation could be tracked back to Hellenistic and Roman periods. In modern days, hydroelectric plants are built for harvesting the kinetic energy of the flowing river. However, a large investment is required in the hydroelectric plants for maximizing the power output. Here we present a low-cost and scalable TENG (triboelectric nanogenerators) based energy harvesting water wheel (ww-TENG). The water wheel works in a sliding freestanding TENG mode which generates power from the charges flow induced by contact electrification and electrostatic induction. A conformal fluorine coated carbon paper (f-CP) was employed to form the alternate electrodes. The deposited fluorine layer provides the benefits of high affinity to attract electrons as well as hydrophobicity for water repelling. The carbon paper offers a high electrical conductivity and rough structure to form a superhydrophobic property. These features enables a large charge induction and fast water/TENG separation for maximizing the power output of the energy harvesting water wheel. A lab-scale water wheel (diameter 10 cm and width 2.5 cm) is fabricated and a maximum 5.3 μW output power was measured under 50 MΩ resistance at a linear flow velocity of 2.6 m/s. The ww-TENG was employed for charging a 10 μF capacitor to 16 V and lighting up a commercial LED light bulb. As a comparison, an electromagnetic generator (EMG) could only charge the capacitor to 2.7 V with the same period of time. The EMG obtains a high power output at low load resistance case ( 10 MΩ). The present ww-TENG shows great potential for harvesting the kinetic energy from flowing river and targets for the applications with large load resistance like electrostatic systems.
