Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been one of the critical technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT). With the rapid development of the IoT, the RFID systems are required to be more efficient and with high throughput capacity. In the widespread IoT application scenes, the collision problem of the RFID tags has become the increasingly remarkable problem in RFID systems. Traditionally, the anti-collision algorithms of RFID systems are always based on time division multiple access (TDMA). Although the TDMA based anti-collision algorithms are simple and easy to implement, it often misses tags and costs high time. Afterwards, the anti-collision algorithms based on blind source separation (BSS) have been introduced. These BSS based anti-collision algorithms are more efficient and stable, but they are mostly suitable for the determined or overdetermined case, i.e., the number of tags is less than that of the readers in RFID systems. Only a few anti-collision algorithms are taken into account of the underdetermined collision model. Because this underdetermined RFID collision model will give rise to more difficult solution but with very meaningfully practical IoT applications. Therefore, to investigate high quality underdetermined anti-collision algorithm for RFID system plays an important role in improving the efficiency of RFID system, and enable RFID implement more wide applications in future IoT systems. As a motivation, this paper proposes a new anti-collision algorithm for underdetermined RFID mixed system for performance improvement. In this work, the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) with minimum correlation and minimum volume constrains, i.e., the new MCV_NMF algorithm is proposed for anti-collision application in underdetermined RFID systems. This algorithm combines the independent principle of the tag signals with the NMF mechanism to achieve performance enhancement. The experimental results and analysis corroborate that this new algorithm can implement the underdetermined collision problem well and enhance the throughput capacity of RFID system.

Background: Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk for therapy-related subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMN), including thyroid SMN. Telomere length (TL) is associated with cancer risk, but the relationship between TL and SMN risk among survivors is less clear. Methods: We conducted a nested, matched case–control study of radiation-exposed 15-year+ adult survivors of childhood cancer with thyroid SMN (cases) and without SMN (controls). Forty-six cases were matched to 46 controls by primary diagnosis, chemotherapy (yes/no), radiation field, and follow-up duration. Lymphocyte TL (LTL) was measured by telomere flow-FISH cytometry using blood samples banked at a mean of 38.9 years (cases), 39.2 years (controls). Genetic variation in telomere genes was assessed by whole genome sequencing. Point estimates for LTL Results: Cases had shorter median LTL than controls in three out of four leukocyte subsets. Cases were more likely to have NK cell LTL Conclusions: Long-term survivors have shorter than expected LTL, a finding that is more pronounced among survivors with thyroid SMN. Impact: The long-term impact of childhood cancer treatment on immune function is poorly understood. Our findings support immune function studies in larger survivor cohorts to assess long-term deficits in adaptive and innate immunity that may underlie SMN risk.

With the ever-increasing requirements of delay-sensitive and mission-critical applications, it becomes a popular research trend to incorporate edge computing in the Internet of Things (IoT) to mitigate the pressure of traditional cloud-based IoT architecture. Edge computing delivers real-time computations and communications for IoT devices by leveraging edge servers deployed close to users, which creates a collaborative edge computing (CEC) paradigm. The capacity of edge servers is beneficial but risky, as vulnerable servers can be exploited to conduct surveillance or perform other nefarious activities. Besides, fake IoT devices would bring security threats and compromise the IoT system. This highlights the necessity of designing a secure and efficient mutual authentication scheme for CEC. In this direction, related works have proposed various authentication mechanisms, but most of them are found unfit due to the absence of decentralization, anonymity, and mobility. Motivated by this fact, we propose a blockchain-based mutual authentication scheme that bridges these gaps. Specifically, blockchain, certificateless cryptography, elliptic curve cryptography, and pseudonym-based cryptography are integrated into our scheme to provide mutual authentication between edge servers and IoT devices. Except for static conditions, both intraedge and interedge authentication are considered. Besides, we elaborate on the key generation procedures and design a session key negotiation mechanism. Extensive experiments and security analyses have been conducted to show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

BACKGROUND Although endoscopy is the gold standard to assess disease activity and infliximab efficacy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the invasive, costly, and time-consuming procedure limits its routine applications. We aimed to investigate the clinical value of serum oncostatin M (OSM) as a surrogate biomarker. METHODS Fifty healthy controls, 34 non-IBD patients, and 189 IBD patients who were pre-infliximab treatment (n = 122) or in infliximab maintenance (n = 67) were enrolled. A chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) was constructed to quantify serum OSM concentrations. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the performance of blood biomarkers for IBD management. RESULTS The methodology of CLIA exhibited great analytical performance with a wide linear range of 31.25-25000 pg/mL, a low detection limit of 23.2 pg/mL, acceptable precision, and applicable accuracy. Objective To retrospectively investigate the relationship between apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphism and in-stent restenosis (ISR) after stenting at the beginning of the vertebral artery. Methods The study included 155 patients who successfully underwent stenting at the beginning of the vertebral artery and had postoperative digital subtraction angiography or computed tomography angiography. Based on the follow-up results, they were divided into the restenosis (ISR) group and non-restenosis (non-ISR) group. The clinical information and APOE genotypes of both groups were analyzed. A binary logistic regression model was used to analyze independent risk factors for ISR. Results After 1 year of follow-up, 49 (31.6%) patients had ISR and 106 (68.4%) did not. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum lipoprotein-related phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), and E3/E4 genotype were independent risk factors for ISR after stenting at the beginning of the vertebral artery. In addition, the LDL-C level of patients with the E3/E4 genotype was higher compared to the E3/E3 genotype group (P Conclusions APOE gene polymorphism is associated with ISR, and the E3/E4 genotype is an independent risk factor for ISR after stenting at the beginning of the vertebral artery. Background: Prior studies have identified that survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) report poor health status. It is unknown how risk-stratified therapy impacts the health status of ALL survivors. Methods: We estimated and compared the prevalence of self-reported poor health status among adult (≥18 years) survivors of childhood ALL diagnosed at age Results: Among 5,119 survivors and 4,693 siblings, survivors were more likely to report poor health status in each domain including poor general health (13.5% vs. 7.4%; PR = 1.92; 95% CI, 1.69–2.19). Compared with 70s, 90sSR and 90sHR were less likely to report poor general health (90sSR: PR = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.57–0.98; 90sHR: PR = 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39–0.87), functional impairment (90sSR: PR = 0.56; 95% CI, 0.42–0.76; 90sHR: PR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.42–0.95), and activity limitations (90sSR: 0.61; 95% CI, 0.45–0.83; 90sHR: PR = 0.59; 95% CI, 0.38–0.91). An added adjustment for chronic conditions in multivariable models partially attenuated 90sSR risk estimates. Conclusions: Risk-stratified ALL therapy has succeeded in reducing risk for poor general health, functional impairment, and activity limitations among more recent survivors of standard- and high-risk therapy. Impact: Future research into the relationship between risk-stratified therapy, health status, and late health outcomes may provide new opportunities to further improve late morbidity among survivors.

Tumor antigens (Ags) are weakly immunogenic and elicit inadequate immune responses, thus induction of antigen-specific immune activation via the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) is a strategy used for cancer immunotherapy. In this study, we examined the effect of Rv3628 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) on activation of DCs and anti-tumor immunity in vivo. Intravenous injection of mice with Rv3628 promoted DC activation of spleen and lymph nodes. More importantly, Rv3628 also induced activation of DCs and enhanced Ag presentation in tumor-bearing mice. In mice bearing ovalbumin (OVA)-expressing tumors, combination treatment with Rv3628 and OVA peptide promoted OVA-specific T cell activation and accumulation of interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-producing OT-I and OT-II cells in tumor-draining lymph nodes. Moreover, three different tumor Ags in three different tumor models showed enhanced anti-tumor activity with Rv3628 as adjuvant, including inhibition of growth of OVA-expressing B16 melanoma, CT26 carcinoma, and B16 melanoma tumors, and a synergistic effect with anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibody treatment. Additionally, potential application against human tumors was indicated by similar activation of human peripheral blood DCs by Rv3628. Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a frequently occurring clinical disease, which could be treated by traditional Chinese medicine. However, the effects and mechanisms of xiao-zhi-fang (XZF) alone or in combination with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on NAFLD remains unclear. Methods This study established the NAFLD mouse model by feeding with a high-fat diet and by administering with XZF and/or FOS. Moreover, the fat content in the liver tissues was evaluated by oil red O and hematoxylin and eosin staining, and the liver function indices were examined using a biochemical analyzer. Changes in the intestinal flora were monitored using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results of the current study showed that the alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total triglyceride, total cholesterol levels, and the amount of lipid accumulation were markedly elevated in NAFLD mice. Results XZF alone or in combination with FOS significantly reduced lipid accumulation in the liver and blood lipid levels in NAFLD mice. Moreover, XZF alone or in combination with FOS notably altered the intestinal flora structure in NAFLD mice. Consequently, 17 operational taxonomic units were decreased and nine were increased in the XZF and/or FOS groups. Conclusions FOS may accelerate the intestinal microecological balance in NAFLD mice after treatment with XZF by promoting intestinal flora growth, thereby enhancing the therapeutic effect of XZF on NAFLD.

Introduction Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder, and one of the most common causes of dementia and amnesia. Due to the complex pathogenesis of AD, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Although scientists have made increasing efforts to develop drugs for AD, no effective therapeutic agents have been found. Objectives Natural products and their constituents have shown promise for treating neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Thus, in-depth study of medical plants, and the main active ingredients thereof against AD, is necessary to devise therapeutic agents. Methods In this study, N2a/APP cells and SAMP8 mice were employed as in vitro and in vivo models of AD. Multiple molecular biological methods were used to investigate the potential therapeutic actions of oxyphylla A, and the underlying mechanisms. Results Results showed that oxyphylla A, a novel compound extracted from Alpinia oxyphylla, could reduce the expression levels of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and amyloid beta (Aβ) proteins, and attenuate cognitive decline in SAMP8 mice. Further investigation of the underlying mechanisms showed that oxyphylla A exerted an antioxidative effect through the Akt-GSK3β and Nrf2-Keap1-HO-1 pathways. Conclusions. Taken together, our results suggest a new horizon for the discovery of therapeutic agents for AD.

Background: Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in adults, has not been well studied as a subsequent malignant neoplasm (SMN) in childhood cancer survivors. We assessed prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes for lung SMN in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) cohort. Methods: Among 25,654 5-year survivors diagnosed with childhood cancer ( Results: Forty-two survivors developed a lung SMN [SIR, 4.0; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.9–5.4] with a cumulative incidence of 0.16% at 30 years from diagnosis (95% CI, 0.09%–0.23%). In a treatment model, chest radiation doses of 10–30 Gy (HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.05–11.0), >30–40 Gy (HR, 4.6; 95% CI, 1.5–14.3), and >40 Gy (HR, 9.1; 95% CI, 3.1–27.0) were associated with lung SMN, with a monotone dose trend (Ptrend < 0.001). Survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma (SIR, 9.3; 95% CI, 6.2–13.4) and bone cancer (SIR, 4.4; 95% CI, 1.8–9.1) were at greatest risk for lung SMN. Conclusions: Survivors of childhood cancer are at increased risk for lung cancer compared with the general population. Greatest risk was observed among survivors who received chest radiotherapy or with primary diagnoses of Hodgkin lymphoma or bone cancer. Impact: This study describes the largest number of observed lung cancers in childhood cancer survivors and elucidates need for further study in this aging and growing population.

Empirical antibiotic therapy in patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is common as pathogen(s) are identified in only 5%-20% patients using conventional culture-based techniques. Metagenome next-generation sequencing (mNGS) test is a promising approach for the diagnosis of infectious disease. The clinical application of mNGS for infected ascites in cirrhotic patients is rarely reported. Here, we describe three cases to preliminarily explore the potential role of mNGS for microbiological diagnosis of ascites infection in an exploratory manner. The clinical performance of ascites mNGS in cirrhotic patients remains to be further evaluated.

Objective: The objective of this article is to report a rare case of glucocorticoid hypersensitivity syndrome, which may be associated with an underlying rubella virus infection. Case Report: A 29-year-old man showed progressive weight gain for 16 months accompanied by a moon face, enlarged dorsocervical fat pad, central obesity, and purple striae. His cortisol circadian rhythm was normal, and plasma cortisol levels at 8:00 AM fluctuated between 3.2 and 9.54 μg/dL (reference range, 4.3-22.4 μg/dL). A dexamethasone suppression test with a very low dose (0.25 mg) of dexamethasone showed a marked decrease in plasma cortisol level to 0 μg/dL. Objective Physical training (PT, e.g., Tai Chi and strength training) has been demonstrated to improve balance control and prevent falls. Recently, exergame intervention (EI) has emerged to prevent falls by enhancing both physical and cognitive functions in older adults. Therefore, we aim to quantitatively assess and compare the effects of PT and EI on the performance of balance control and fall prevention in healthy older adults via meta-analysis. Methods A search strategy based on the PICOS principle was used to find the publication in the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE. The quality and risk of bias in the studies were independently assessed by two researchers. Results Twenty studies consisting of 845 participants were included. Results suggested that as compared to PT, EI induced greater improvement in postural control (sway path length, SMD = − 0.66, 95% CI − 0.91 to − 0.41, P I2 = 0%; sway speed, SMD = − 0.49, 95% CI − 0.71 to − 0.27, P I2 = 42%) and dynamic balance (SMD = − 0.19, 95% CI − 0.35 to − 0.03, P = 0.02, I2 = 0%) in healthy older adults. The EI with 90–119 min/week for more than 8-week significantly reduced falls. Subgroup analyses revealed that exergames, which were designed by the two principles of repeatedly performing diversified tasks and gradually increase the difficulty of the task, induced significant effects in improving balance control and falls prevention respectively (P = 0.03, P = 0.009). In addition, intervention that combines EI and PT induced significant improvement in postural control (P = 0.003). Conclusion The exergame intervention, especially the combination of EI and PT, is a promising strategy to improve balance control and reduce falls in healthy older adults. Future studies with rigorous design, larger sample size, and follow-up assessments are needed to further assess the effectiveness of diverse exergame interventions in fall prevention and to quantify the “dose-effect” relationship, as well as the carry-over effect of such intervention, which will ultimately help optimize the rehabilitative strategies to improve balance control and prevent falls.

Allergic disease is one of the most common chronic diseases, which can affect both children and adults, be often caused by allergen-induced unfavorable immune responses, and initiate various symptoms in different organs, including up-/low-airways and skin, such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and rhinosinusitis. With increasing prevalence of allergic disease worldwide and their impact on the quality of life, new biological therapeutic approaches for these disorders become hot areas of intensive research. Multiple factors are involved and play important role in the pathogenesis of allergic disease, which can promote or trigger T helper 2 (Th2)-type immune responses, leading to production of the type 2 cytokines and immunoglobulin E (IgE)，the two critical events in the allergic diseases. Using monoclonal antibodies to target these molecules, therefore, might provide possible benefits for the patients suffered from these diseases. Apart of those having approved biologics for allergic diseases, some potential targets such as epithelial-derived alarmins thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and interleukin 33 (IL-33) have been also described and proposed to develop monoclonal antibodies against either these cytokines, their receptors, or both. These new and potential targets have substantially enriched the therapeutic opportunities in the field of allergic diseases. The present review aims to briefly outline the role of monoclonal antibodies targeting the cytokines and immunoglobulin involved in the development of allergic diseases, and to discuss the clinical effects of these antibodies.

Deployable structures can realize the transformation from a folded configuration to a deployed configuration to satisfy the requirements of applications. They have been widely used in aerospace structures, civil temporary components, medical devices, transformable robotics and other engineering applications. A large amount of research has been carried out on the structural design ranging from rigid, rigid-flexible to flexible structures and the performance analysis including the static loading properties and structural stability, as well as the dynamics during deployment and in the deployed configuration. However, to date, there are no mature systematic approaches for the design and analysis of deployable structures due to diverted application demands. Therefore, in this review, efforts are made to find a common methodology from most existing successful cases and to propose the major challenges for the future applications of deployable structures.

Osteoporosis is a systemic bone metabolism disorder, which increases the risk of fractures, and in severe cases it may cause disability or even death. An important factor contributing to osteoporosis is the imbalance between bone formation and resorption. Naringin was reported to promote osteoblast differentiation, thus enhancing bone formation and alleviating osteoporosis development. However, the signalling pathways related to the regulatory mechanism of naringin in osteoporosis development are not clear. Proliferation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) treated with naringin in vitro was detected by CCK-8. An osteogenesis differentiation medium supplemented with naringin was applied to explore the effects of naringin on BMSC osteogenic differentiation, as detected by Alizarin red staining. Ovariectomy (OVX)-induced postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) rats were orally administered with naringin. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and micro-CT were applied to measure bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume/total volume (BV/TV), trabecula thickness (Tb.Th), trabecula number (Tb.N), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) and bone surface/bone volume (BS/BV). H&E staining was performed to show pathological changes of the femur in PMOP rats after naringin treatment. Bone metabolism indicators were assessed by ELISA. We found that naringin suppressed the activation of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. Naringin promoted BMSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, naringin alleviates bone loss and improves abnormal bone metabolism of PMOP rats. Collectively, naringin promotes BMSC osteogenic differentiation to ameliorate osteoporosis development by targeting JAK2/STAT3 signalling.

Purpose Growing efforts are being invested in investigating various molecular approaches to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) and predict disease recurrence. In our study, we investigated the utility of parallel longitudinal analysis of mutation and DNA methylation profiles for predicting MRD in postoperative non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods Tumor tissues and longitudinal blood samples were obtained from 65 patients with resected stage IA-IIIB NSCLC. Somatic mutation and DNA methylation profiling were performed using ultra-deep targeted sequencing and targeted bisulfite sequencing, respectively. Dynamic changes in plasma-based mutation and tumor-informed methylation profiles, reflected as MRD score, were observed from before surgery (baseline) to postoperative followup, reflecting the decrease in tumor burden of the patients with resected NSCLC. Results Mutations were detected from plasma samples in 63% of the patients at baseline, which significantly reduced to 23-25% during post-operative follow-ups. MRD score positive rate was 95.7% at baseline, which reduced to 74% at the first and 70% at the second follow-up. Among the 5 relapsed patients with parallel longitudinal analysis of mutation and methylation profile, elevated MRD score was observed at follow-up between 0.5-7 months prior to radiologic recurrence for all 5 patients. Of them, 4 patients also had concomitant increase in allelic fraction of mutations in at least 1 follow-up time point, but one patient had no mutation detected throughout all follow-ups. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that longitudinal profiling of mutation and DNA methylation may have potential for detecting MRD and predicting recurrence in postoperative NSCLC patients.

Heterostructure devices based on two-dimensional materials have been under intensive study due to their intriguing electrical and optical properties. One key factor in understanding these devices is their nanometer-scale band profiles, which is challenging to obtain in devices. Here, we use a technique named contact-mode scanning tunneling spectroscopy to directly visualize the band profiles of MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure devices at different gate voltages with nanometer resolution. The long-held view of a conventional p-n junction in the MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure is reexamined. Due to strong inter- and intralayer charge transfer, the MoS2 layer in contact with WSe2 is found to convert from n-type to p-type, and a series of gate-tunable p-n and p-p+ junctions are developed in the devices. Highly conductive edges are also discovered which could strongly affect the device properties.

Background: Propofol may result in hypotension, bradycardia, and loss of protective reflexes, especially in elderly patients, while esketamine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists, has analgesic, anaesthetic and sympathomimetic properties and is known to cause less cardiorespiratory depression. We hypothesized that esketamine may reduce the median effective concentration (EC50) of propofol and cause more stable haemodynamic responses during gastrointestinal endoscopy in elderly patients. Methods: Ninety elderly patients, aged 65-89 years, undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy were randomly assigned into three groups: SK0.25 group (0.25 mg/kg esketamine), SK0.5 group (0.5 mg/kg esketamine) and saline control group. Anaesthesia was achieved by target-controlled infusion of propofol with an initial plasma concentration of 2.5 μg/ml with different bolus doses of esketamine during gastrointestinal endoscopy. The EC50 of propofol for gastrointestinal endoscopy was determined by using an up-and-down method of Dixon with an adjacent concentration gradient at 0.5μg/mL to prohibit purposeful movements. Cardiovascular parameters were also measured and recorded. Results: Propofol EC50 and its 95% confidence interval for gastrointestinal endoscopy in elderly patients were 1.71 (1.15-2.27) μg/mL in SK0.5 group, 2.45 (1.85-3.05) μg/mL in SK0.25 group and 3.69 (2.59-4.78) μg/mL in control group respectively (P < 0.05). The average percent change to baseline mean arterial pressure (MBP) was -19.7 (7.55), -15.2 (7.14) and -10.1 (6.73) with P＜0.001, in the control group, the SK0.25 group and the SK0.5 group, respectively. Conclusions: Combination medication of propofol with esketamine reduced the propofol EC50 during gastrointestinal endoscopy in elderly patients and caused more stable haemodynamic responses compared with single administration of propofol.

The identification of powerful predictors for recurring cardiovascular events (RCEs) is vital. This study seeks to evaluate the predictive value of three-dimensional (3D) strain parameters for RCEs in patients with hypertension complicated by AMI.Methods: We successfully followed up patients with hypertension and AMI from April 2015 to December 2015 in this retrospective study. Participants previously underwent 3D echocardiography, one week, and one month after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The left ventricular structural function parameters, as well as 3D strain parameters including 3D global longitudinal strain (3D-GLS), 3D global circumferential strain, 3D global radial strain, and 3D global area strain (3D-GAS), were acquired. A Cox model was used to determine the relationships between these parameters and RCEs.Results: In total, 62 patients were enrolled in the analysis. During follow-up (41.27 ± 20.45 months), 20 patients (32.3%) had RCEs that were independently predicted one month after PCI by 3D-GLS (HR: 1.481, 95% CI: 1.202– 1.824, P < 0.001) and 3D-GAS (HR: 1.254, 95% CI: 1.093– 1.440, P = 0.001). The optimal cutoffs for 3D-GLS and 3D-GAS in predicting cardiac events were ≥ 12.5% (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC]: 0.736, 95% CI: 0.611– 0.862, P = 0.003), and > 20.5% (AUC: 0.685, 95% CI: 0.551– 0.818, P = 0.020), respectively.Conclusion: The assessed values of 3D-GLS and 3D-GAS one month after PCI can predict RCEs in patients with hypertension complicated by AMI.Keywords: hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography, strain, cardiovascular events

Background Unsatisfactory tumor response to induction chemotherapy (IC) is an adverse prognostic factor of locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC). A re-induction strategy which applies additional cycles of an alternative IC regimen prior to radiotherapy (RT) has been adopted. Methods A total of 419 LANPC patients who attained suboptimal response (stable disease or disease progression) according to the Response Evaluation in Solid Tumors (RECIST) guideline after initial IC were retrospectively included. They were divided into those who received additional cycles of re-induction regimen prior to RT (re-induction group, n = 87) and those who had no additional chemotherapy (direct to RT group, n = 332). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to adjust for potential confounders. Tumor response and long-term survival were compared between two groups. Results After receiving a second IC regimen, 39.1% of the patients in re-induction group attained partial response; however, the tumor control of subsequent RT was not significantly improved when compared with direct to RT group (patients attaining complete response after RT 55.2% vs. 52.5%, P = 0.757). Patients who received re-induction therapy showed worse locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) than those proceeded directly to RT (3-year LRFS 75.7% vs. 83.1%, P = 0.005; 3-year PFS 62.4% vs. 68.3%, P = 0.037). The increased hematological toxicities were observed in re-induction group that included grade 3–4 anemia, thrombocytopenia and liver enzyme increase. Conclusion Re-induction therapy decreased LRFS and PFS and increased toxicities among patients who attain suboptimal response to initial IC regimen, as compared with direct to RT strategy.

PURPOSE Arsenic combined with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is the standard of care for adult acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). However, the safety and effectiveness of this treatment in pediatric patients with APL have not been reported on the basis of larger sample sizes. METHODS We conducted a multicenter trial at 38 hospitals in China. Patients with newly diagnosed APL were stratified into two risk groups according to baseline WBC count and FLT3-ITD mutation. ATRA plus arsenic trioxide or oral arsenic without chemotherapy were administered to the standard-risk group, whereas ATRA, arsenic trioxide, or oral arsenic plus reduced-dose anthracycline were administered to the high-risk group. Primary end points were event-free survival and overall survival at 2 years. RESULTS We enrolled 193 patients with APL. After a median follow-up of 28.9 months, the 2-year overall survival rate was 99% (95% CI, 97 to 100) in the standard-risk group and 95% (95% CI, 90 to 100) in the high-risk group ( P = .088). The 2-year event-free survival was 97% (95% CI, 93 to 100) in the standard-risk group and 90% (95% CI, 83 to 96) in the high-risk group ( P = .252). The plasma levels of arsenic were significantly elevated after treatment, with a stable effective level ranging from 42.9 to 63.2 ng/mL during treatment. In addition, plasma, urine, hair, and nail arsenic levels rapidly decreased to normal 6 months after the end of treatment. CONCLUSION Arsenic combined with ATRA is effective and safe in pediatric patients with APL, although long-term follow-up is still needed.

Most previous studies of recommender systems (RSs) have particularly focused on optimizing user experience; however, users are not the only stakeholders of an RS. A pure concentration of users limits the ability to incorporate the perspectives of other stakeholders, such as providers. Furthermore, because users' preferences and providers' objectives may conflict, considering only users' views degrades the recommendation methods' utility. Therefore, we propose a cascade hybrid many-objective recommendation method (CHMAOR) to balance four objectives for two different stakeholders. CHMAOR combines provider coverage (PC), user reach coverage (URC), and provider entropy (PE) to create a new provider visibility model (PCRE). The many-objective optimization (MOP) stage includes a novel multiparent probabilistic heuristic genetic algorithm (MPPHX) that heuristically considers both parents' gene frequency and recommendation list features. Extensive experiments demonstrate the following. 1) CHMAOR effectively balances user and provider objectives in terms of accuracy, diversity, novelty, and provider visibility according to the baseline algorithms. 2) The PCRE model considers not only provider coverage but also provider appearance frequency and provider diversity while effectively changing imbalanced provider recommendations. Furthermore, PCRE dramatically reduces the complexity of high-dimensional many-objective recommendations. 3) Our MPPHX achieves better convergence and diversity solutions than the competing MOP algorithms.

This paper considers a relay‐assisted massive multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) downlink system in which a base station (BS) communicates with all terminals via a relay node enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). Both time‐switching (TS) and energy‐splitting (PS) protocols are respectively considered at the relay node for coordinating energy harvesting and information decoding. The quality‐of‐service (QoS) fairness problem among terminals is investigated in the considered systems. In detail, the power allocation coefficients and energy harvesting time duration for TS based SWIPT, and the power allocation coefficients and PS ratio for PS based SWIPT are jointly optimised, aiming at seeking to maximise the minimum achievable rate over all terminals. As the formulated problems are non‐convex and non‐linear, and hard to solve directly, suboptimal heuristic algorithms are proposed for solving them. Additionally, the convergence and complexity of the proposed algorithms are also analysed. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated by extensive computer simulations. Results manifest that the proposed algorithms can provide uniformly great QoS for every terminal by resource allocation.

Although concomitant nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is common in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), the impact of viral factors on NASH and the outcome of CHB patients concomitant with NASH remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the outcomes of NASH in CHB patients receiving antiviral treatment.In the post-hoc analysis of a multicenter trial, naïve CHB patients receiving 72-week entecavir treatment were enrolled. We evaluated the biochemical, viral and histopathological responses of these patients. The histopathological features of NASH were also evaluated, using paired liver biopsies at baseline and week 72.A total of 1000 CHB patients were finally enrolled for analysis, with 18.2% of whom fulfilling the criteria of NASH. A total of 727 patients completed entecavir antiviral treatment and received the second biopsy. Serum HBeAg loss, HBeAg seroconversion and HBV-DNA undetectable rates were similar between patients with or without NASH (P0.05). Among patients with NASH, the hepatic steatosis, ballooning, lobular inflammation scores and fibrosis stages all improved during follow-up (all P0.001), 46% (63/136) achieved NASH resolution. Patients with baseline body mass index (BMI) ≥ 23 kg/mLower BMI and weight reduction but not virologic factors determine NASH resolution in CHB. The value of weight management in CHB patients during antiviral treatment deserves further evaluation.

Excessive phosphorus is an important cause of eutrophication. For river basin management, source identification and control of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution are difficult. In this study, to explore influences of hydrological conditions on phosphorus, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is applied to the Luanhe River basin in North China. Moreover, influences of the spatial scale of the livestock and poultry amount data on estimations of phosphorus loads are also discussed. The results show that applying town-level livestock and poultry amount data allows the model to perform better when estimating phosphorus loads, indicating that using data at a finer administrative level is necessary. For the typical wet year, the estimated annual phosphorus load was 2.6 times that in the typical dry year. Meanwhile, the contribution of pollution in summer to the annual load is greater in the wet year than that in the dry year. The spatial distributions of subbasins with high unit loads of phosphorus differ under different hydrological conditions, meaning that critical areas for pollution control vary with the wetness of each year. All these findings indicate that for pollution control at basin scale, considering the seasonal and interannual variabilities in hydrological conditions is highly demanded. Background: Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare malignancy with high predilection to involve surrounding structures such as pulmonary metastases. We analysed the chest computed tomography (CT) imaging features of patients diagnosed with primary cardiac angiosarcoma with pulmonary metastases in this study. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with confirmed primary cardiac angiosarcoma, out of which eight (all men) with pulmonary metastasis were included in the analysis. The patients’ age ranged from 17 to 74 (mean: 48) years. CT was performed in all patients with unenhanced, contrast-enhanced, and both scans were done in 1, 3 and 4 patients, respectively. Results: Nodular lesions were observed in 7 patients with multiple solid nodules observed in 6 out of 7 patients. A solitary solid nodule was found in the remaining patient in the upper lobe and apical segment of the right lung with a diameter of 11.7 mm. All solid nodules were distributed along with bronchovascular bundles in the lungs, and their maximum diameter ranged from 2.3 to 19.9 mm. Nodules larger than 10 mm in diameter were heterogeneously enhanced on contrast-enhanced CT images (5/8 patients), whereas those smaller than 10 mm were homogeneously enhanced (3/8 patients). Other imaging features, namely the tree-in-bud pattern, emphysema, pleural effusion, and mediastinal lymph node enlargement, were observed in 4, 3, 3, and 2 patients, respectively. Conclusion: CT enhancement features of pulmonary metastasis in patients with primary cardiac angiosarcoma depend on the size of pulmonary nodules, with larger ones being heterogeneous and smaller ones homogeneous. Other signs are less noticed.

OBJECTIVES Constipation and opioid-induced constipation (OIC) are common with limited treatment options. We investigated whether a noninvasive method of auricular vagal nerve stimulation (aVNS) could be used for treating OIC and explored its potential mechanisms and neural pathways in a rodent model of OIC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sprague-Dawley were chronically implanted with one pair of auricular electrodes for aVNS. Sixteen rats were treated with loperamide for a week while another 16 rats received bilateral vagotomy, then randomly treated with aVNS or sham-aVNS for a week. In addition, eight normal rats were implanted with a polyethylene catheter in the proximal colon for assessing whole colon transit. RESULTS 1) The number of fecal pellets and water content in feces increased after aVNS, compared with sham-aVNS. 2) aVNS accelerated colon transit and whole gut transit, compared with sham-aVNS. 3) In colon tissues, aVNS increased the protein expression of choline acetyltransferase, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor and the c-kit expression in myenteric interstitial cells of Cajal but decreased the protein expression of neural nitric oxide synthase (p

Innovations in endoscopy have brought about some impressive improvements in diagnosing and treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD, as one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders in the world, has always been on the cutting edge of endoscopic interventions. A primary diagnosis of GERD is based on symptoms and an initial trial of proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, which is devoid of adequately instructive value for therapeutic strategies. Endoscopy and optional biopsies can be used to directly observe and determine the abnormal structural and pathophysiological damage in the esophagus. The emergence of minimally invasive endoscopic therapy fills the gap between patients who are reluctant or insensitive to PPIs and candidates who are not indicated for surgical anti-reflux fundoplication. In this review, we discuss the utility of endoscopy and biopsy in patients with persistent GERD-related manifestations after proper medical anti-reflux treatment. Moreover, we portray a landscape of four current endoscopic GERD therapies and clarify the merits and disadvantages of each technique. Future research needs to concentrate on stratifying GERD patients based on personal conditions and elucidating the primary pathophysiology of GERD.

Quantum photonic devices are candidates for realizing practical quantum computers and networks. The development of integrated quantum photonic devices can greatly benefit from the ability to incorporate different types of materials with complementary, superior optical or electrical properties on a single chip. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) serve as a core element in the emerging modern photonic quantum technologies by allowing on-demand generation of single-photons and entangled photon pairs. During each excitation cycle, there is one and only one emitted photon or photon pair. QD photonic devices are on the verge of unfolding for advanced quantum technology applications. In this review, we focus on the latest significant progress of QD photonic devices. We first discuss advanced technologies in QD growth, with special attention to droplet epitaxy and site-controlled QDs. Then we overview the wavelength engineering of QDs via strain tuning and quantum frequency conversion techniques. We extend our discussion to advanced optical excitation techniques recently developed for achieving the desired emission properties of QDs. Finally, the advances in heterogeneous integration of active quantum light-emitting devices and passive integrated photonic circuits are reviewed, in the context of realizing scalable quantum information processing chips.

Aims Our previous study demonstrated that Ca2+ influx through the Orai1 store-operated Ca2+ channel in macrophages contributes to foam cell formation and atherosclerosis via the calcineurin–ASK1 pathway, not the classical calcineurin–nuclear factor of activated T-cell (NFAT) pathway. Moreover, up-regulation of NFATc3 in macrophages inhibits foam cell formation, suggesting that macrophage NFATc3 is a negative regulator of atherogenesis. Hence, this study investigated the precise role of macrophage NFATc3 in atherogenesis. Methods and results Macrophage-specific NFATc3 knockout mice were generated to determine the effect of NFATc3 on atherosclerosis in a mouse model of adeno-associated virus-mutant PCSK9-induced atherosclerosis. NFATc3 expression was decreased in macrophages within human and mouse atherosclerotic lesions. Moreover, NFATc3 levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from atherosclerotic patients were negatively associated with plaque instability. Furthermore, macrophage-specific ablation of NFATc3 in mice led to the atherosclerotic plaque formation, whereas macrophage-specific NFATc3 transgenic mice exhibited the opposite phenotype. NFATc3 deficiency in macrophages promoted foam cell formation by potentiating SR-A- and CD36-meditated lipid uptake. NFATc3 directly targeted and transcriptionally up-regulated miR-204 levels. Mature miR-204-5p suppressed SR-A expression via canonical regulation. Unexpectedly, miR-204-3p localized in the nucleus and inhibited CD36 transcription. Restoration of miR-204 abolished the proatherogenic phenotype observed in the macrophage-specific NFATc3 knockout mice, and blockade of miR-204 function reversed the beneficial effects of NFATc3 in macrophages. Conclusion Macrophage NFATc3 up-regulates miR-204 to reduce SR-A and CD36 levels, thereby preventing foam cell formation and atherosclerosis, indicating that the NFATc3/miR-204 axis may be a potential therapeutic target against atherosclerosis.

In this paper, an enhanced independent component analysis (ICA) method is proposed for blind separation of noisy mixture signals. Considering the conventional ICA methods always have an inadequate capacity of resisting noisy effect. This phenomenon is usually encountered in wireless receiving processing. To obtain the improved separation quality, two mechanisms are conducted to formulate the modified cost function and the powerful optimization learning for investigating an enhanced ICA method.The fundamental of the proposed method is derived from the minimum bit error rate (BER) criterion and the Nesterov-accelerated adaptive moment estimation (Nadam) optimization approach. The main work of this paper includes the following facets. Firstly, a maximum likelihood (ML) principle cost function with minimum BER constraint is derived. Secondly, the modified cost function is by utilizing Nadam learning processing. Lastly, theoretical analysis and experiment results verify the improved performance quality of the proposed enhanced ICA method compared with popular representative ICA methods.

BACKGROUND Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been adopted as the standard of care for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients harboring EGFR sensitizing mutations. Besides the two common mutations exon 19 deletion and L858R, which together comprise approximately 85% of EGFR mutations in NSCLC, rare EGFR mutations also exist, including point mutations, deletions, and insertions spanning EGFR exons 18-25. However, the responsiveness of uncommon EGFR mutations to EGFR TKIs remains elusive and attracts increasing interest. CASE SUMMARY Herein, we report a 55-year-old male patient with stage IV NSCLC harboring a rare EGFR L833F-L861Q compound mutation in cis. The patient achieved a partial response to first-line treatment with afatinib and a progression-free survival of 10 mo. After afatinib failure, the patient received multiple line treatments with chemotherapy. Upon disease progression, the heavily pretreated patient was treated with osimertinib and bevacizumab, and both lung lesion and brain metastases were stable for more than 3 mo. He had an overall survival of 25 mo. CONCLUSION Our case revealed that both afatinib and the osimertinib + bevacizumab combination demonstrated clinical efficacy in NSCLC harboring an EGFR L833F-L861Q compound mutation. The results provide more therapeutic options for patients with rare compound mutations.

Introduction Dialectical behavior therapy(DBT) has been widely used for borderline personality disorder(BPD). Existing studies are limited to behaviors such as self-harm , and the results for reducing self-harm were controversial. Few have systematically evaluated the effect of DBT on self-harming behaviors and negative emotions. Aim This study aims to evaluate the effects of DBT on self-harming behaviors and negative emotions in patients with BPD. Methods RCTs on DBT for BPD were searched from PubMed, Embase, etc., and the results were performed by RevMan 5.3. Results The meta-analysis demonstrated that DBT reduced self-harming behaviors, and alleviated depression, but had a negligible effect on suicidal ideation and anger. One subgroup revealed that standard DBT improved depression significantly, but DBT skills trainning improved poorly. Another subgroup revealed that there was a significant reduction in depression among patients receiving DBT for 4 months to 14 months, but not at 4 months. Discussion and implications for practice Findings indicate that DBT can reduce self-harming behaviors and improve depression, but effects on suicidal ideation and anger are insignificant. Subgroup analysis suggests that standard DBT and DBT-ST lasting beyond 4 months benefits on BPD. Given the quality and quantity restrictions of RCTs, more high-quality RCTs need to verify these effects.

BACKGROUND T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia (T-LGLL) is a rare type of aplastic anemia with diverse clinical manifestations. Concomitant diseases are often present at the first manifestation. We describe the treatment of a patient with CD57-negative γδT-LGLL with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). CASE SUMMARY A 34-year-old woman with a 20-year history of anemia visited our hospital owing to severe dizziness and was admitted. Her condition was diagnosed as CD57-negative γδT-LGLL with PRCA through bone marrow cytology, bone marrow pathology, bone marrow flow cytometry, bone marrow multiplex polymerase chain reaction combined with fluorescent fragment analysis, and other tests. Treatment with prednisone, methotrexate, and subcutaneous erythropoietin did not significantly change her hemoglobin level. After treatment with oral cyclophosphamide for 3 mo, her hemoglobin level increased to approximately 100 g/L. After 5 mo of treatment, the patient could perform activities of daily living independently. CONCLUSION The treatment of CD57-negative γδT-LGLL with PRCA with cyclophosphamide helps to improve prognosis.

Placental hypoxic-ischemic pathology is one of the common causes for adverse outcomes. But there is no commonly accepted evaluation system on specific morphological and histopathological measures of the placenta.This study aims to systematically select several core placental hypoxic-ischemic measures that have a high prognostic relevance to child health.We used data from the Collaborative Perinatal Project, a multicenter prospective cohort study that recruited over 55,000 pregnant women and followed their offspring to 7 years old. Women who had information on placental pathology and child outcomes were included. 57 placental measures considered to be relevant to hypoxia-ischemia were selected. Apgar score, intelligence quotient, preeclampsia, birth weight and subclinical neurology injuries were chosen as outcomes. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) procedure as well as training and testing methods were used to select a more efficient and simpler placental hypoxic-ischemic measures that may have clinical implications.Of the 57 measures, 7 were selected as candidates by LASSO. Based on the training and testing methods, we retained placental measures with a higher odds ratio of child morbidity. We further narrowed down to four measures that had the highest prognostic relevance. They were: short cord length (ΣOR = 8.51), calcification of cut surface (ΣOR = 8.31), opaque membranes (ΣOR = 5.26), Hofbauer cells in terminal villi (ΣOR = 4.69).Our four-measure system is relatively simple and closely related to the child health. It may be used as a novel placental hypoxic-ischemic evaluation criterion, and function as the first line tool for future research.

Venomous snakebites cause clinical manifestations that range from local to systemic and are considered a significant global health challenge. Persistent or refractory thrombocytopenia has been frequently reported in snakebite patients, especially in cases caused by viperidae snakes. Viper envenomation-induced thrombocytopenia may persist in the absence of significant consumption coagulopathy even after the antivenom treatment, yet the mechanism remains largely unknown. Our study aims to investigate the mechanism and discover novel therapeutic targets for coagulopathy-independent thrombocytopenia caused by viper envenomation. Here we found that patients bitten by Protobothrops mucrosquamatus and Trimeresurus stejnegeri, rather than Naja. atra may develop antivenom-resistant and coagulopathy-independent thrombocytopenia. Crude venoms and the derived C-type lectin-like proteins from these vipers significantly increased platelet surface expression of neuraminidase and platelet desialylation, therefore led to platelet ingestion by both macrophages and hepatocytes in vitro, and drastically decreased peripheral platelet counts in vivo. Our study is the first to demonstrate that desialylation-mediated platelet clearance is a novel mechanism of viper envenomation-induced refractory thrombocytopenia and C-type lectin-like proteins derived from the viper venoms contribute to snake venom-induced thrombocytopenia. The results of this study suggest the inhibition of platelet desialylation as a novel therapeutic strategy against viper venom-induced refractory thrombocytopenia.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of aggressive hydration compared with general hydration for contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) prevention among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI).MethodsThe Aggressive hydraTion in patients with STEMI undergoing pPCI to prevenT Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury study is an open-label, randomised controlled study at 15 teaching hospitals in China. A total of 560 adult patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive aggressive hydration or general hydration treatment. Aggressive hydration group received preprocedural loading dose of 125/250 mL normal saline within 30 min, followed by postprocedural hydration performed for 4 hours under left ventricular end-diastolic pressure guidance and additional hydration until 24 hours after pPCI. General hydration group received ≤500 mL 0.9% saline at 1 mL/kg/hour for 6 hours after randomisation. The primary end point is CI-AKI, defined as a >25% or 0.5 mg/dL increased in serum creatinine from baseline during the first 48–72 hours after primary angioplasty. The safety end point is acute heart failure.ResultsFrom July 2014 to May 2018, 469 patients were enrolled in the final analysis. CI-AKI occurred less frequently in aggressive hydration group than in general hydration group (21.8% vs 31.1%; risk ratio (RR) 0.70, 95% CI 0.52 to 0.96). Acute heart failure did not significantly differ between the aggressive hydration group and the general hydration group (8.1% vs 6.4%, RR 1.13, 95% CI 0.66 to 2.44). Several subgroup analysis showed the better effect of aggressive hydration in CI-AKI prevention in male, renal insufficient and non-anterior myocardial infarction participants.ConclusionsComparing with general hydration, the peri-operative aggressive hydration seems to be safe and effective in preventing CI-AKI among patients with STEMI undergoing pPCI.

Unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of focal epilepsy characterized by foci in the unilateral temporal lobe grey matters of regions such as the hippocampus. However, it remains unclear how the functional features of white matter are altered in TLE. In the current study, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed on 71 left TLE (LTLE) patients, 79 right TLE (RTLE) patients and 47 healthy controls (HC). Clustering analysis was used to identify fourteen white matter networks (WMN). The functional connectivity (FC) was calculated among WMNs and between WMNs and grey matter. Furthermore, the FC laterality of hemispheric WMNs was assessed. First, both patient groups showed decreased FCs among WMNs. Specifically, cerebellar white matter illustrated decreased FCs with the cerebral superficial WMNs, implying a dysfunctional interaction between the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex in TLE. Second, the FCs between WMNs and the ipsilateral hippocampus (grey matter foci) were also reduced in patient groups, which may suggest insufficient functional integration in unilateral TLE. Interestingly, RTLE showed more severe abnormalities of white matter FCs, including links to the bilateral hippocampi and temporal white matter, than LTLE. Taken together, these findings provide functional evidence of white matter abnormalities, extending the understanding of the pathological mechanism of white matter impairments in unilateral TLE.

Clinicians in intensive care units (ICUs) have been prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination. We aim to understand the reasons behind vaccination refusal, and assess preferences for COVID-19 vaccines among Chinese ICU clinicians.ICU clinicians throughout China's mainland were contacted to participate in an online survey. We compared concerns with vaccination status, and through a discrete choice experiment (DCE) assessed preferences for vaccines in terms of effectiveness, risk of adverse reactions, duration of immunity, and whether coworkers have been vaccinated.Among 11,951 ICU respondents from 252 prefecture-level regions, vaccination coverage was 75.4%, with an additional 9.2% not vaccinated but intending to, and 16.1% not vaccinated and not intending to. ICU clinicians not intending to be vaccinated significantly expressed more concerns about the speed of vaccine development (30.1%) and adverse reactions (65.9%). In the DCE, the only significant difference in preferences of a COVID-19 vaccine was for safety, with those not intending to have a stronger preference for a vaccine with fewer adverse reactions (OR = 4.49), compared to those already vaccinated (OR = 2.90) or those intending to vaccinate (OR = 3.46).Increasing vaccination coverage among Chinese ICU clinicians will require strong norms surrounding vaccination and transparency about safety information.

Cancer is still an insurmountable problem for humans and critically attacking human health. In recent years, natural products have gained increasing attention in the field of anti-tumor due to their extensive sources and minimal side effects. Maslinic acid (MA), a pentacyclic triterpene acid mainly derived from the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) has been confirmed to possess great anti-cancer effects. This paper reviewed the inhibitory effect of MA and its derivatives on lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, lymphatic, leukemia, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, gallbladder cancer, and bladder cancer, among others. MA inhibited the proliferation of various tumor cells and showed lower IC50 values in melanoma 518A2 cells and gastric cancer MKN28 cells compared with other cell lines. A series of semi-synthetic derivatives obtained by modifying MA chemical structure have been shown to have high cytotoxicity to human tumor cell lines, but low cytotoxicity to non-malignant cells, which is conducive to developing its potential as a chemotherapeutic agent. These studies suggest that MA derivatives have broad prospects in the development of antitumor therapeutics in the future and warrant further study.

Background Coxsackie virus group A type 16 (CoxA16) is the main pathogen and usually an alternative to or joins in prevalence with enterovirus 71 (EV71) causing hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). The objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody among people of various age groups by a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods The literature of seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody among people has been systematically searched through databases from the date of their establishment to Jan. 2021. Estimates of seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody by gender and age groups have been summarized by using fixed- and random- effect models. All analyses have been conducted in STATA version 12.0 software. Results A total of 14 publications with 9 in English and 5 in Chinese containing 9562 samples were finally included in the meta-analysis. The seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody reported in different studies range from 24.85 to 76.92 %. Meta-analysis has revealed that the seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody was 56.3 % (95 %CI: 47.7 %~64.9 %) in the overall population and 55.1 % (95 %CI: 44.1 %~66.1 %) in the Chinese population. Subgroup analysis by gender has revealed that the seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody was 56.1 % (95 %CI: 45.2 %~67.1 %) in males and 60.0 % (95 %CI: 50.0 %~69.9 %) in females. Subgroup analysis by age groups has revealed that the seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody was 49.1 % (95 %CI: 36.2 %~62.0 %) in the 0 ~ 5 age group and 63.9 % (95 %CI: 53.1 %~74.7 %) in the over 5 age group. Begg’s funnel plots have suggested that there were no publication bias in all groups. Sensitive analysis has suggested that the result of the meta-analysis was stable. Conclusions The seroprevalence of CoxA16 antibody was closely related to age. Children under 5 years old were the main susceptible groups for CoxA16 and also the key groups for the prevention and control of HFMD.

Increased serum uric acid (SUA) is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is associated with left ventricular (LV) myocardial dysfunction. Nonetheless the association of SUA with right ventricular (RV) function in T2DM has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate the association of SUA with biventricular myocardial function in patients with T2DM.A total of 560 patients with T2DM were enrolled and divided into four groups according to sex-specific quartiles of SUA. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed and two-dimensional speckle tracking was used to measure biventricular myocardial strain, including LV global longitudinal strain (GLS), circumferential strain (CS), radial strain (RS), and RV free wall longitudinal strain (RV-FWLS). The absolute value of all biventricular strain parameters showed a stepwise decrease across SUA quartiles (all P 0.01). In particular, LV assessment by GLS, CS and RS demonstrated that those in the 4th quartile were impaired compared with the other quartiles (all P 0.05). Similarly, RV-FWLS of the 4th quartile was significantly impaired compared with the 1st and 2nd quartiles (all P 0.05). The same reduction in biventricular strain across SUA quartiles was observed in patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate or ≥60 ml/min/1.73 mSUA was independently associated with biventricular myocardial dysfunction in asymptomatic T2DM patients, regardless of renal function or diabetic control.
