Abstract: International audience; With the rapid surge of M-Health and smart city systems, the need to accommodate sensors and actuators to achieve effective automation turns out to be imposed, for an efficient machine-to-machine communication to be maintained. In this regard, the key elements necessary for a successful M-Health system to take place are discovered to be the power consumption and interoperability maintaining factors. In this context, the present study is conducted to devise a special elderly tracking and monitoring system, closely connected to a walking stick device. The proposed design involves a cane cased transmitter node, enabling to send data related to the position and the state of the elderly to a base station, through implementation of the LoRa technology. The latter would then apply the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol to interact with the environment once a fall proves to take place. For the purpose of evaluating the advanced design associated coverage range and power consumption rate, as enhanced via LoRa network, several experimental tests have been administered. The achieved results appear to reveal that the suggested architecture recorded average covered area turns out to be of the rate of 6 km2.

Abstract: Part 3: Task Modelling and Task-Based Approaches; International audience; Testing interactive systems is known to be a complex task that cannot be exhaustive. Indeed, the infinite number of combination of user input and the complexity of information presentation exceed the practical limits of exhaustive and analytical approach to testing [31]. Most interactive software testing techniques are produced by applying and tuning techniques from the field of software testing to try to address the specificities of interactive applications. When some elements cannot be taken into account by the software testing technique, they are usually ignored. In this paper we propose to follow an opposite approach, starting from a generic architecture for interactive systems (including both software and hardware elements) for identifying in a systematic way, testing problems and testing needs. This architecture-driven approach makes it possible to identify how software testing knowledge and techniques can support interactive systems testing but also where the interactive systems engineering community should invest in order to test their idiosyncrasies too.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a unifying analysis for redundancy systems with cancel-on-start ( c . o . s . ) and cancel-on-complete ( c . o . c . ) with exponentially distributed service requirements. With c . o . s . ( c . o . c . ) all redundant copies are removed as soon as one of the copies starts (completes) service. As a consequence, c . o . s . does not waste any computing resources, as opposed to c . o . c . We show that the c . o . s . model is equivalent to a queueing system with multi-type jobs and servers, which was analyzed in Visschers et al., (2012), and show that c . o . c . (under the assumption of i.i.d. copies) can be analyzed by a generalization of Visschers et al., (2012) where state-dependent departure rates are permitted. This allows us to show that the stationary distribution for both the c . o . c . and c . o . s . models has a product form. We give a detailed first-time analysis for c . o . s and derive a closed form expression for important metrics like mean number of jobs in the system, and probability of waiting. We also note that the c . o . s . model is equivalent to Join-Shortest-Work queue with power of d (JSW( d )). In the latter, an incoming job is dispatched to the server with smallest workload among d randomly chosen ones. Thus, all our results apply mutatis-mutandis to JSW( d ). Comparing the performance of c . o . s . with that of c . o . c . with i.i.d. copies gives the unexpected conclusion (since c . o . s . does not waste any resources) that c . o . s . is worse in terms of mean number of jobs. As part of ancillary results, we illustrate that this is primarily due to the assumption of i.i.d. copies in case of c . o . c . (together with exponentially distributed requirements) and that such assumptions might lead to conclusions that are qualitatively different from that observed in practice.

Abstract: International audience; Among typical range-free localization schemes for sensor networks, DV-Hop has its distinguishing advantage of the capability to localize unknown nodes, which have less than three or even no neighbor anchors. However, existing DV-Hop based localization methods have not considered the problem of packet collisions, which can frequently happen during the throughout-whole-network broadcast of numerous data packets at the first two steps of DV-Hop. In order to effectively improve the success rate of packet transmission between nodes, this paper proposes a medium access control (MAC) method based on Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) protocol sequence for DV-Hop localization. First, a broadcasting strategy is designed for the proposed MAC method. Then, dedicated procedures for both anchor nodes and unknown nodes are presented to implement the designed MAC method in DV-Hop localization. Through simulation and evaluation, the performance of DV-Hop localization with the proposed MAC method is thoroughly investigated. Simulation results show that when the number of protocol sequences is larger than a certain number, the proposed MAC method can provide DV-Hop with better localization accuracy than E-CSMA/CA, while keeping similar localization time.

Abstract: We present PCach, a smartphone-based approach for relieving the congestion in cellular network resulting from the exponential growth in mobile data traffic. The basic idea underlying PCach is simple: use WiFi to proactively cache content on the smartphone's memory, which otherwise would have been delivered through the cellular network. However, it leads to several challenging questions, including how much mobile data actually flows through cellular networks, how much data can be pre-cached, and when and what to pre-cache. We address these questions progressively using a thorough analysis of user data collected from our purpose-built crowdsensing Android application, actively utilized by 45 users for periods dating back to July 2014. Our analysis shows that the median smartphone user transfers 15% of their data via the cellular network and that 80\% of it can be pre-cached via WiFi. To capitalize on these results, we draw on a careful analysis of the measurement data to introduce an algorithm that can run stand-alone on off-the-shelf smartphones and predict with good accuracy when and what to pre-cache., Comment: To appear as a 4p paper in the proceedings of the 43nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN), Chicago, USA, October 1-4, 2018

Abstract: Preprint; International audience; As the power demand of datacenters is increasing sharply, a promising solution is to power datacenters locally by renewable energies. However, one of the main challenges when operating such green datacenters is to conciliate the intermittent power supply and the power demand. To deal with this problem, we view the green datacenter as two sub-systems, namely, Information Technology (IT) sub-system which consumes energy, and electrical sub-system which supplies energy. The objective is to find an efficient trade-off between the power demand and power supply, respecting the operational requirements of both sub-systems (i.e., the requirements on utility, or monetary gain, which includes monetary revenue and monetary cost). First, we analyze the problem by a black-box approach. In this approach, the models of the two sub-systems are unknown to each other, and the two sub-systems negotiate by exchanging their power preferences. However, we found that the black-box approach cannot guarantee stable solutions in term of execution time and generational distance (which is the distance between a solution and the Pareto front). Then we introduce a semi black-box approach, in which the two sub-systems are modeled as the buyer and the supplier in a buyer–supplier negotiation game. We propose an algorithm that allows the buyer and supplier to negotiate, seeking for an efficient trade-off between the power demand and power supply. The analytical results show that the semi black-box algorithm converges to equilibrium, and these results are then confirmed by experimental results. We conduct the experiments by implementing a middleware of a datacenter powered by renewable energies. The experimental results show that the semi black-box algorithm improves significantly the stability, quality of service (QoS) and utility of the datacenter, compared to other algorithms. In term of stability, compared to the black-box algorithm, the semi black-box algorithm reduces the standard deviation of execution time and generational distance by 23 and 27 times, respectively. In term of QoS and utility, the semi black-box algorithm outperforms the algorithms that do not consider joint IT-energy management, as well as the algorithms that do not utilize a semi black-box design

Abstract: International audience; When resolving many-objective problems, multi-objective optimization algorithms encounter several difficulties degrading their performances. These difficulties may concern the exponential execution time, the effectiveness of the mutation and recombination operators or finding the tradeoff between diversity and convergence. In this paper, the issue of 3D redeploying in indoor the connected objects (or nodes) in the Internet of Things collection networks (formerly known as wireless sensor nodes) is investigated. The aim is to determine the ideal locations of the objects to be added to enhance an initial deployment while satisfying antagonist objectives and constraints. In this regard, a first proposed contribution aim to introduce an hybrid model that includes many-objective optimization algorithms relying on decomposition (MOEA/D, MOEA/DD) and reference points (Two_Arch2, NSGA-III) while using two strategies for introducing the preferences (PI-EMO-PC) and the dimensionality reduction (MVU-PCA). This hybridization aims to combine the algorithms advantages for resolving the many-objective issues. The second contribution concerns prototyping and deploying real connected objects which allows assessing the performance of the proposed hybrid scheme on a real world environment. The obtained experimental and numerical results show the efficiency of the suggested hybridization scheme against the original algorithms.

Abstract: Power consumption of servers and applications are of utmost importance as computers are becoming ubiquitous, from smart phones to IoT and full-fledged computers. To optimize their power consumption, knowledge is necessary during execution at different levels: for the Operating System to take decisions of scheduling, for users to choose between different applications. Several models exist to evaluate the power consumption of computers without relying on actual wattmeters: Indeed, these hardware are costly but also usually have limits on their pooling frequency (usually a one-second frequency is observed) except for dedicated professional hardware. The models link applications behavior with their power consumption, but up to now there is a 5% wall: Most models cannot reduce their error under this threshold and are usually linked to a particular hardware configuration. This article demonstrates how to break the 5% wall of power models. It shows that by using neural networks it is possible to create models with 1% to 2% error. It also quantifies the reachable precision obtainable with other classical methods such as analytical models.

Abstract: International audience; System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) is a technique , based on System-Theoretic Accident Model and Process (STAMP), to identify hazardous control actions, loss scenarios, and safety requirements. STPA is considered a rather complex technique and lacks formalism, but there exists a growing interest in using STPA in certifications of safety-critical systems development. SysML is a modeling language for systems engineering. It enables representing models for analysis, design, verification, and validation of systems. In particular, the free software TTool and the model-checker UPPAAL enable formal verification of SysML models. This paper proposes a method that combines STPA and SysML modeling activities in order to allow simulation and formal verification of systems' models. An automatic door system serves as example to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: International audience; This paper reports our experience for developing Human-Machine Interface (HMI) complying with ARINC 661 specification standard for interactive cockpits applications using formal methods. This development relies on the FLUID modelling language, we have proposed and formally defined in the FORMEDICIS project. FLUID contains essential features required for specifying HMI. To develop the Multi-Purpose Interactive Applications (MPIA) use case, we follow the following steps: an abstract model of MPIA is written using the FLUID language; this MPIA FLUID model is used to produce an Event-B model for checking the functional behaviour, user interactions, safety properties, and interaction related to domain properties; the Event-B model is also used to check temporal properties and possible scenario using the ProB model checker; and finally, the MPIA FLUID model is translated to Interactive Cooperative Objects (ICO) using the PetShop CASE tool to validate the dynamic behaviour, visual properties and task analysis. These steps rely on different tools to check internal consistency along with possible HMI properties. Finally, the formal development of the MPIA case study using FLUID and its embedding into other formal techniques, demonstrates reliability, scalability and feasibility of our approach defined in the FORMEDICIS project.

Abstract: International audience; We present a user-centric and decentralized digital identity system that allows anyone to easily benefit from an enriched digital identity made of multi-purpose and multi-origin attributes. It increases usability by the elimination of user passwords. It also makes this digital identity highly trustworthy both for the user (in terms of privacy and sovereignty) and the service provider who requires highly certified information about the user being enrolled to and/or authenticated on its services. We built our system based on the Universal Authentication Framework specified by the FIDO Alliance and the data model proposed by the W3C Verifiable Credentials WG. The whole system has been implemented in a banking scenario.

Abstract: The exponential increase in the Internet of Things (IoT) has drastically augmented the need for computing and storage resources. IoT devices generate massive data that requires to be efficiently stored and disseminated for further processing and decision making. Given this, Content Distribution Networks (CDN) play a vital role to store and serve contents through geographically distributed surrogate servers in an IoT environment. Thanks to the explosive rise in IoT devices, CDN installations are also significantly increasing, hence, consuming a substantial amount of energy. The dynamic energy consumption of CDN resources is proportional to their utilization. Therefore, it is very crucial to design and develop utilization aware policies and strategies for sustainable content distribution. In the literature, different approaches have been proposed to improve the CDN performance by improving CDN utility in terms of security, authentication, and confidentiality, etc. Whereas, these works largely neglect the efficient utilization of CDN resources. In this perspective, this paper investigates the fact that CDN utility does not reflect the utilization of CDN resources. For this purpose, a comprehensive analysis is performed by comparing both metrics - CDN utility and CDN utilization, under various CDN scenarios. The results show that CDN utilization exhibits lower values even if the CDN utility is showing promising results. Abstract: International audience; The energy consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) stills a very interesting challenge in both the industrial and the research field. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is an excellent result of the collaboration between these both fields in order to well managing the energy consumed in the node by controlling its duty cycle. It presents the most efficient standards for low energy consumption that is why it is considered as the main technology for the Internet of Thing (IoT). Our work consists mainly of validating through an experimental testbed the two methods proposed. The first approach proposed is about computing the energy consumed by the node in its different transmission states with more efficiency. Although, the second approach deals with computing its most convenable duty cycle basing on the remaining energy in the battery of the node which presents a very interesting issue for the energy consumption in wireless communication.

Abstract: International audience; Putting independent components together is a common design practice of distributed systems. Besides, there exists a wide range of interaction protocols that dictate how these components interact, which impacts their compatibility. However, the communication model itself always consists in a monolithic description of the rules and properties of the communication. In this paper, we propose a mechanized framework for the compatibility checking of compositions of peers where the interaction protocol can be fine tuned through assembly of basic properties on the communication. These include whether the communication is point-to-point, multicast or convergecast, which ordering-policies are to be applied, applicative priorities, bounds on the number of messages in transit, and so on. Among these properties, we focus on a generic description of multicast communication that encompasses point-to-point and one-to-all communication as special cases. The components that form the communication model are specified in TLA+, and a system, composed of a communication model and a specification of the behavior of the peers (also in TLA+ ), is checked with the TLA+ model checker. Eventually we provide theoretical views on the relations between ordering-policies through the lenses of multicast and convergecast communication.

Abstract: International audience; The sharp increase of the overall data amount makes their access and processing harder. Data replication is a well known technique that helps to decrease access time and improve reliability. In the context of Cloud Databases, most of data replication strategies do not answer simultaneously to performance and provider's profit with an awareness on energy consumption. In this paper, we compare different data replication strategies. Some of them intend to reduce the overall energy consumption when others intend to maximize the profit. We highlight that very few data replication strategies Figure out simultaneously solutions for those issues even if there is a high demand from industries to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. We finally analyse why and how the race for profit and energy savings should be researched together.

Abstract: International audience; 3D Deployment represents a fundamental role in setting up an efficient wireless sensor network (WSNs) and IoT network. In general, WSN are widely used in a variety of applications ranging from monitoring a smart house to monitoring forest fires with parachuted sensors. In this paper, we focus on planned 3D deployment, which the sensor nodes must be accurately positioned at predetermined locations to optimize one or more design objectives under some given constraints. The purpose of planned deployment is to determine the type, number, and locations of nodes to optimize coverage, connectivity and network lifetime. There have been a large number of studies, which proposed algorithms for solving the premeditated 3D deployment problem. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first one is to present the complexity of 3D deployment and then detail the types of sensors, objectives, applications and recent research that concerns the strategy used to solve this problem. The second one is to present a comparative survey between recent optimization approaches used to resolve the deployment problem in WSN. Based on our extensive review, we discuss the strengths and limitations of each proposed solutions and compare them in terms of the WSN design factors.

Abstract: International audience; An Ultrascale System (USS) joins parallel and distributed computing systems that will be two to three orders of magnitude larger than today's infrastructure regarding scale, performance, the number of components and their complexity. For such systems to become a reality, however, advances must be made in High Performance Computing (HPC), large-scale distributed systems, and big data solutions, also tackling challenges such as improving the energy efficiency of the IT infrastructure. Monitoring the power consumed by underlying IT resources is essential towards optimising the manner IT resources are used and hence improve the sustainability of such systems. Nevertheless, monitoring the energy consumed by USSs is a challenging endeavour as the system can comprise thousands of heterogeneous server resources spanning multiple data centres. Moreover, the amount of monitoring data, its gathering, and processing , should never become a bottleneck nor profoundly impact the energy efficiency of the overall system. This work surveys state of the art on energy monitoring of large-scale systems and methodologies for monitoring the power consumed by large systems and discusses some of the challenges to be addressed towards monitoring and improving the energy efficiency of USSs. Next, we present efforts made on designing monitoring solutions. Finally, we discuss potential gaps in existing solutions when tackling emerging large-scale monitoring scenarios and present some directions for future research on the topic.

Abstract: This study concentrates on extracting painting art history knowledge from the network structure of Wikipedia. Therefore, we construct theoretical networks of webpages representing the hyper-linked structure of articles of 7 Wikipedia language editions. These 7 networks are analyzed to extract the most influential painters in each edition using Google matrix theory. Importance of webpages of over 3000 painters are measured using PageRank algorithm. The most influential painters are enlisted and their ties are studied with the reduced Google matrix analysis. Reduced Google Matrix is a powerful method that captures both direct and hidden interactions between a subset of selected nodes taking into account the indirect links between these nodes via the remaining part of large global network. This method originates from the scattering theory of nuclear and mesoscopic physics and field of quantum chaos. From this study, we show that it is possible to extract from the components of the reduced Google matrix meaningful information on the ties between these painters. For instance, our analysis groups together painters that belong to the same painting movement and shows meaningful ties between painters of different movements. We also determine the influence of painters on world countries using link sensitivity between Wikipedia articles of painters and countries. The reduced Google matrix approach allows to obtain a balanced view of various cultural opinions of Wikipedia language editions. The world countries with the largest number of top painters of selected 7 Wikipedia editions are found to be Italy, France, Russia. 21. Comparative Analysis of Ranging Protocols for Localization by UWB in Outdoor

Abstract: International audience; The rapid evolution of technology in the field of wireless telecommunications and micro components using MEMS technologies (Micro-electromechanical systems) has contributed to the expansion and rapid development of wireless sensor networks (WSN). This rapid development has contributed to the appearance of sensor and actuator networks (WSAN) or even to the Internet of Things with DL_IoT (Device Layer-Internet of Things). This rapid evolution of WSN is due to the enthusiasm generated by this last in industry and research. This new technology is used in several applications, particularly in the outdoor location of communicating nodes. The process of distance calculation between nodes (ranging) is a primordial phase for a precise location of these nodes. This paper presents the result of measurements do with three ranging protocols (TWR, TWR_Skew and SDS-TWR) implemented on DecaWiNo nodes. DecaWiNo nodes use the Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radio links, proposed by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard amendment of the year 2007, which provides a high performance ranging by ToF (Time of Flight). The results are very promising with precision errors of the order of 50 cm over 20 meters.

Abstract: International audience; Context: Software systems are often too complex to be expressed by a single model. Recognizing this, the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) proposes multi-modeling approaches to allow developers to describe a system from different perspectives. In this context, model composition has become important since the combination of those partial representations is inevitable. Nevertheless, no approach has been defined for keeping track of the composition effects, and this operation has been overshadowed by model transformations. Objective: This paper presents a traceability approach dedicated to the composition of models. Two aspects of quality are considered: producing relevant traces; and dealing with scalability. Method: The composition of softgoal trees has been selected to motivate the need for tracing the composition of models and to illustrate our approach. The base principle is to augment the specification of the composition with the behavior needed to generate the expected composed model accompanied with a trace model. This latter includes traces of the execution details. For that, traceability is considered as a crosscutting concern and encapsulated in an aspect. As part of the proposal, an Eclipse plug-in has been implemented as a tool support. Besides, a comparative experiment has been conducted to assess the traces relevance. We also used the regression method to validate the scalability of the tool support. Results: Our experiments show that the proposed approach allows generating relevant traces. In addition, the obtained results reveal that tracing a growing number of elements causes an acceptable increase of response time.Conclusion: This paper presents a traceability approach dedicated to the composition of models and its application to softgoal trees. The experiment results reveal that our proposal considers the composition specificities for producing valuable traceability information while supporting scalability.

Abstract: A pattern-based approach as a new method for system dependability engineering based on the reuse of patterns.The design a set of DSMLs to specify the dependability patterns.The development of a set of tools to support the proposed approach.The application of the approach in the context of railway systems.These results suggest our work has wider applicability and usefulness. Safety-critical systems require a high level of safety and integrity. Therefore, generating such systems involves specific software building processes. Many domains are not traditionally involved in these types of software problems and must adapt their current processes accordingly. Typically, such requirements are developed ad hoc for each system, preventing further reuse beyond the domain-specific boundaries. This paper proposes a solution for software system development based on the reuse of dedicated subsystems, i.e., so-called dependability patterns that have been pre-engineered to adapt to a specific domain. We use Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) to describe dependability patterns and a methodology for developing dependable software systems using these patterns. Moreover, we describe an operational architecture for development tools to support the approach. An empirical evaluation of the proposed approach is presented through its practical application to a case study in the railway domain, which has strong dependability requirements, to support a pattern-based development approach. This case study is followed by a survey to better understand the perceptions of practitioners regarding our approach.

Abstract: International audience; Intel SGX has attracted much attention from academia and is already powering commercial applications. Cloud providers have also started implementing SGX in their cloud offerings. Research efforts on Intel SGX so far have mainly concentrated on its security and programmability. However, no work has studied in detail the performance degradation caused by SGX in virtualized systems. Such settings are particularly important, considering that virtualization is the de facto building block of cloud infrastructure, yet often comes with a performance impact. This paper presents for the first time a detailed performance analysis of Intel SGX in a virtualized system in comparison with a bare-metal system. Based on our findings, we identify several optimization strategies that would improve the performance of Intel SGX on such systems.

Abstract: International audience; Requirements traceability is broadly recognized as a critical element of any rigorous software development process, especially for building safety-critical software (SCS) systems. Model-driven development (MDD) is increasingly used to develop SCS in many domains, such as automotive and aerospace. MDD provides new opportunities for establishing traceability links through modeling and model transformations. Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is a standardized architecture description language for embedded systems, which is widely used in avionics and aerospace industries to model safety-critical applications. However, there is a big challenge to automatically establish the traceability links between requirements and AADL models in the context of MDD, because requirements are mostly written as free natural language texts, which are often ambiguous and difficult to be processed automatically. To bridge the gap between natural language requirements (NLRs) and AADL models, we propose an approach to generate the traceability links between NLRs and AADL models. First, we propose a requirement modeling method based on the restricted natural language, which is named as RM-RNL. The RM-RNL can eliminate the ambiguity of NLRs and barely change engineers' habits of requirement specification. Second, we present a method to automatically generate the initial AADL models from the RM-RNLs and to automatically establish traceability links between the elements of the RM-RNL and the generated AADL models. Third, we refine the initial AADL models through patterns to achieve the change of requirements and traceability links. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with industrial case studies and evaluation experiments.

Abstract: Part 9: Design Principles for Safety/Critical Systems; International audience; Command and control systems centralize information from multiple underlying systems to support operators in the performance of their mission. Beyond the mission itself (that may be complex), operators must also ensure the correct functioning of these systems (often called platform). Platform systems (e.g. engines or electric system) may be very different from each other and exhibit a large number of functional states. When applied to the design of command control systems, User Centered Design methods support understanding and capturing operators’ needs to perform the mission, as well as to propose solutions to design usable mission-related user interfaces. However, user interfaces for platform management need to present and organize information about the underlying complex systems. Understanding those systems and abstracting away information about their behavior (so that operators can manage them) requires deep knowledge beyond UI/UX designers and UCD methods experts. In this paper, we propose a system-centered process that would complement UCD approaches for the design of command and control systems. That process takes as input the detailed functioning of underlying systems and provides abstract and structured information to inform UCD methods. Beyond supporting usability property, the integrated process supports reliability and safety properties that UCD approaches usually overlook. We present how the proposed process has been applied for the design of a large civil commercial aircraft warning system and show generalizability to other domains.

Abstract: International audience; Depending on the application level quality requirements, packets on the Internet can broadly be classified into two classes: Streaming (S) and Elastic (E). Streaming packets require low delays, but can tolerate packet losses without degrading the user level performance. Elastic traffic has less stringent delay demands, but its performance is very sensitive to packet losses, since the latter trigger costly packet recovery mechanisms. In this paper, we analyze a space–time priority queue (STPQ), a queueing discipline that can satisfy the performance criterion of both classes. Streaming packets get time priority, i.e., they are served with priority over elastic packets, while elastic packets get space priority, i.e., in the event the buffer is full, the arrival of an elastic packet will trigger, with probability , the push-out from the queue of a streaming packet. In our main analytical result, we have developed efficient algorithms to compute the steady-state probabilities and the mean delay of STPQ. We have also analyzed the queue in the light-traffic regime, which allows us to derive a closed-form approximation. Numerical results illustrate that the STPQ can provide a low delay to streaming packets without significant degradation of the blocking probability of elastic packets.

Abstract: National audience; In a modern data center (DC), a large majority of costs arise from energy consumption. The most popular technique used to mitigate this issue is virtualization and more precisely virtual machine (VM) consolidation. Although consolidation may increase server usage by about 5-10%, it is difficult to actually witness server loads greater than 50%. By analyzing the traces from our cloud provider partner, confirmed by previous research work, we have identified that some VMs have sporadic moments of data computation followed by large periods of idleness. These VMs often hinder the consolidation system which cannot further increase the energy efficiency of the DC. In this paper we propose a novel DC power management system called Drowsy-DC, which is able to identify the aforementioned VMs which have matching patterns of idleness. These VMs can thus be colocated on the same server so that their idle periods are exploited to put the server to a low power mode (suspend to RAM) until some data computation is required. While introducing a negligible overhead, our system is able to significantly improve any VM consolidation system; evaluations showed improvements up to 81% and more when compared to OpenStack Neat.

Abstract: International audience; With the increasing popularity of containers, managing them on top of virtual machines becomes a common practice, called nested virtualization. This paper presents BrFusion and Hostlo, two solutions that address each of two networking issues of nested virtualization: network virtualization duplication and virtual machine-bounded pod deployments. The first issue lengthens network packet paths while the second issue leads to resource fragmentation. For instance, in respect with the first issue, we measured a throughput degradation of about 68% and a latency increase of about 31% in comparison with a single networking layer. We prototype BrFusion and Hostlo in Linux KVM/QEMU, Docker and Kubernetes systems. The evaluation results show that BrFusion leads to the same performance as a single-layer virtualization deployment. Concerning Hostlo, the results show that more than 11% of cloud clients see their cloud utilization cost reduced by down to 40%.

Abstract: International audience; The 3D indoor deployment of sensor nodes is a complex real world problem, proven to be NP-hard and difficult to resolve using classical methods. In this context, we propose a hybrid approach relying on a novel bird's accent-based many objective particle swarm optimization algorithm (named acMaPSO) to resolve the problem of 3D indoor deployment on the Internet of Things collection networks. The new concept of bird's accent is presented to assess the search ability of particles in their local areas. To conserve the diversity of the population during searching, particles are separated into different accent groups by their regional habitation and are classified into different categories of birds/particles in each cluster according to their common manner of singing. A particle in an accent-group can select other particles as its neighbors from its group or from other groups (which sing differently) if the selected particles have the same expertise in singing or are less experienced compared to this particle. To allow the search escaping from local optima, the most expert particles (parents) ''die'' and are regularly replaced by a novice (newborn) randomly generated ones. Moreover, the hybridization of the proposed acMaPSO algorithm with multi-agent systems is suggested. The new variant (named acMaMaPSO) takes advantage of the distribution and interactivity of particle agents. Experimental, numerical and statistical found results show the effectiveness of the two proposed variants compared to different other recent state-of-the-art of many-objective evolutionary algorithms.

Abstract: International audience; Cyber-physical systems (CPS) integrate both physical and computational elements and their engineering requires bridging the continuous analog real world and the discrete digital world. User interfaces of cyber-physical systems belong to the class of command and control systems and their design and engineering usually follow ad-hoc craft processes highly parametrized by the very nature of the physical component(s). This paper proposes a systematic approach for engineering CPS, emphasizing the problems and possible solutions to design and assess their user interfaces (both control and presentation). The paper first proposes a generic architecture for CPS going from the physical element(s) to the user interface. This architecture is then refined, highlighting the behavior and software interfaces of each of its component and showing how information and control from the physical elements have to be processed and transformed to make sense to the operator. The paper presents extracts of the application of the proposed approach to the command and control cockpit application of an aircraft system.

Abstract: International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) encompasses both large-scale deployed physical infrastructures and software layers that enable intuitive and transparent creation of applications. This highly distributed, energy-greedy environment must ensure the quality of deployed services while taking into account the heterogeneity of capabilities and protocols as well as users and objects mobility. Deployment infrastructure has been redesigned to provide the necessary features, including paradigms such as software-defined networks and Fog computing. The purpose of this article is to study IoT services placement in a Fog architecture. We propose a model of the infrastructure and IoT applications as well as a placement strategy taking into account system's energy consumption and applications delay violations minimization with a Discrete Particles Swarm Optimization algorithm (DPSO). Simulations have been done with iFogSim simulator. Results have been compared with heuristics coming from the literature: Binary Partical Swarm optimization (BPSO), Dicothomous Module Mapping (DCT), CloudOnly, IoTFogOnly, IoTCloud (IC) and FogCloud (FC) placement approaches.

Abstract: This work aims to facilitate deployment of novel distributed space systems architectures such as Federated Satellite Systems (FSS). In particular, the purpose of the work is to identify retrofitting possibilities to incorporate existing satellites into a network. For the satellite case, the paper presents a systematic review of possible retrofitting options such as direct modifications, which include replacement and addition of interfaces, and indirect modifications with adding an intermediary (FSS Negotiator). While the paper concludes that direct modifications of existing satellites are non-feasible from the technical point of view, it also identifies a possible scenario of retrofitting by adding as an intermediary a Negotiator satellite. The link budget for the inter-satellite link between an existing satellite mission such as SPOT-6 and FSS Negotiator was estimated. The work concludes that from the link budget point of view with the existing communication technologies such configuration can provide a slant range limited from several hundred to thousands kilometers. Through analysis of open data of satellite characteristics, including ITU information concerning planned or existing space stations, the work comes up with several models for the further trade-off analysis, identifying how parameters of FSS Negotiator such as an operated bandwidth and frequency, types of supported modulations and cumulative throughput correlate with the covered number of satellites. These results might be used for the tradeoff analysis for the FSS Negotiator mission design. Eventually paper proposes several possible FSS Negotiator architectures and its high-level technical requirements based on analysis of characteristics of existed and planned satellites.

Abstract: International audience; We present a dynamic security management framework where security policies are specified according to situations. Situation-based policies easily express complex dynamic security measures, are closer to business, and simplify the policy life cycle management. Situations are specified using complex event processing techniques. The framework is supported by a modular event–based infrastructure where a dedicated situation manager maintains active situations allowing the command center to take dynamic situation–based authorization and obligation decisions. The whole framework has been implemented and showed good performance by simulation. Finally, we detail two real experiments.

Abstract: International audience; A lot of cloud systems are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the data volume and the arrival of the big data era. Meanwhile, energy efficiency and energy saving become major concerns for data centers where massive cloud systems are deployed. However, energy waste is quite common due to resource over-provisioning. In this paper, using Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), a frequency selection approach is introduced to improve the energy efficiency of cloud systems in terms of resource over-provisioning. In the approach, two algorithms, Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Monte Carlo Tree Search Algorithm (MCTS), are proposed. Cloud database system is taken as an example to evaluate the approach. The results of the experiments show that the algorithms have great scalability which can be applied to a 120-nodes case with high accuracy compared to optimal solutions (up to 99.9% and 99.6% for GA and MCTS respectively). According to an optimality bound analysis, 21 % of energy can be saved at most using our frequency selection approach.

Abstract: Floods, particularly fast ones, are recurrent natural disasters with a large impact on people and infrastructures. In order to mitigate their impact most countries created regulatory frameworks to coordinate the large number of actors participating to the response of these crises. Several levels from rescue to infrastructure restoration are involved. This article proposes to improve the management of risk and resilience in areas subject to flash floods. The innovative autonomic approach presented in this article is twofold: A short-term feedback loop using a large range of information to help managing the current flood; A long-term feedback loop aiming at improving the resilience of the area to reduce the impact of future crises. The originality of these two loops consists in their link which helps improving the quality of both by feeding each other. This article also describes a scenario showing several benefits of the proposed approach.

Abstract: International audience; A lot of cloud computing and cloud database techniques are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the arrival of the big data era. Meanwhile, energy efficiency and energy saving become a major concern in data centers, which are in charge of large distributed systems and cloud databases. However, the phenomenon of energy wasting is related to resource provisioning. Hot-N-Cold model is introduced in this paper, which uses workload predictions and DVFS(Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) to cope with the resource provisioning problem within energy aware cloud database systems. In this model, the resource provisioning problem is considered as two bounded problems. A nonlinear programming algorithm and a multi-phase algorithm are proposed to solve them. The experimental results show that one of the proposed algorithms has great scalability which can be applied to a cloud database system deployed on 70 nodes. Using Hot-N-Cold model can save up to 21.5% of the energy of the running time.

Abstract: International audience; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) can be used to deploy communication networks by acting as access points for ground users. Taking advantage of the lightness and the high maneuverability of drones, such a network can be implemented quickly and inexpensively in situations where network infrastructures are damaged or overloaded (emergency situations), or nonexistent (wild life observation). To mitigate these issues, an off-loading network based on UAVs carrying radio access points was proposed in our previous work. The goal is to temporarily provide multiple services, voice, video, data, etc., over a specific zone. The design of the aerial network was formulated as a self-deployment method built on a Coulomb's law analogy where users and UAVs act as electrical charges. In this paper, we go beyond the proposed scheme by considering a multi-channel model taking into account the interference. We set up association and channel switching schemes that boost the overall performance of the network.

Abstract: Proving correctness of distributed or concurrent algorithms is a mind-challenging and complex process. Slight errors in the reasoning are difficult to find, calling for computer-checked proof systems. In order to build computer-checked proofs with usual tools, such as Coq or TLA+, having sequential specifications of all base objects that are used as building blocks in a given algorithm is a requisite to provide a modular proof built by composition. Alas, many concurrent objects do not have a sequential specification. This article describes a systematic method to transform any task, a specification method that captures concurrent one-shot distributed problems, into a sequential specification involving two calls, Set and Get. This transformation allows system designers to compose proofs, thus providing a framework for modular computer-checked proofs of algorithms designed using tasks and sequential objects as building blocks. Abstract: Part 1: Practice; International audience; Automation can be considered as a design alternative that brings the benefits of reducing the potential for human error and of increasing performance. However, badly designed automations, of which some of them are called automation surprises, can have a very negative impact on the overall performance of the couple operator/system. Automation design requires the definition of three specific aspects defining the relationship between the user and the system: allocation of functions, authority and responsibility. While these abstract concepts are usually well understood at a high level of abstraction, their integration within a development process is cumbersome. This paper presents an approach based on task models to explicitly handle those concepts. We show how such concepts can be integrated in a task modeling notation and illustrate on a case study how this notation can be used to describe design alternatives with different allocation of functions, authority and responsibility between the user and the system. Exploiting the case study, we demonstrate that embedding explicitly these concepts in a notation supports analysis and assessment of automation designs.

Abstract: International audience; Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by difficulties of socialization, disorders of verbal communication, restricted and stereotyped patterns of behaviors. Firstly, the paper reports tools of the user-centered design (UCD) used as well participants involved in the design of interactive collaborative system for children with ASD. Then, we describe the UCD deployed to design a vocal communication tool (VCT) between an adult with ASD and his family caregivers. The analyses of interviews demonstrate a strong need for a collaborative assistive technology based on voice interaction to avoid the family caregivers repeating the same sentences to the adult with ASD and, to create a friendly atmosphere at home. Observations in a real life environment demonstrate that the VCT is useful and accepted by the adult with ASD and his family. The work is not complete and issues such as designing a spoken dialogue system in the smart home need further works. The study of the type of voice synthesis (human or text-to-speech synthesis) is also an open question.

Abstract: A lot of cloud systems are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the data volume and the arrival of the big data era. Meanwhile, energy efficiency and energy saving become major concerns for data centers where massive cloud systems are deployed. However, energy waste is quite common due to resource provisioning. In this paper, using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), a frequency selection approach is introduced to improve the energy efficiency of the cloud systems in terms of resource provisioning. In the approach, two algorithms, genetic algorithm (GA) and Monte Carlo tree search algorithm (MCTS), are proposed. A cloud database system is taken as an example to evaluate the approach. The results of the experiments show that both algorithms have its advantages. The algorithms have great scalability, in which the GA can be applied to thousands of nodes and the MCTS can be applied to hundreds of nodes. Both algorithms have high accuracy compared with optimal solutions (up to 99.9% and 99.6% for GA and MCTS, respectively). According to an optimality bound analysis, 26% of energy can be saved at most using our frequency selection approach.

SPARK by Example is inspired by ACSL by Example, a similar effort for C/ACSL programs, and provides detailed specification, implementation and proof of classic algorithms (array manipulation, sorting, heap etc). A comparison between ACSL and SPARK is done in the light of proof performance and ease of use.

Abstract: International audience; Last decade has witnessed a proliferation of work, both from the academic and the industrial sectors, to provide methods and technologies to support smart buildings. Due to advances in electronics and telecommunications, sensors and actuators maybe deployed and interconnected, at low cost, in buildings to make them smart, energy-efficient, and secure. Smart buildings (SBs) will redefine the way habitants live and interact in the future. SBs are among the dominant fields of Internet-of-things applications. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging solution to make easier network management. This paper provides a brief state-of-the-art regarding networks used to support SBs and it addresses the benefits of SDN in the design and management of networks for SBs. As SDN-based SB roadmap is still at an early stage, this paper discusses some challenges to design and deploy SDN-based networks to fulfil SB requirements.

Abstract: Multiple model-based engineering (MBE) frameworks have emerged to cover the many requirements for the engineering of avionics systems: from early requirement capture to the final system and embedded software generation, through refinement and V&V activities. In this paper, we consider the SysML, AADL and FACE standards. They are promoted by different standardization bodies, with different objectives. We note they are often seen as competitive, while we argue it is the opposite: there is a potential for a synergistic coupling. To date, no complete open evaluation on the feasibility of such capability has been done. In this paper, we present one workflow that illustrates the joint use of SysML, AADL and FACE. We consider a basic flight control system to exercise the proposed process and gateways between the three notations. We use SCADE Architect by ANSYS that supports the three notations in a unified workbench to illustrate refinement scenarios from one notation to another, then synchronize with SCADE Suite to complete the software development.

Abstract: International audience; With the explosion of data production, the efficiency of data management and analysis has been concerned by both industry and academia. Meanwhile, more and more energy is consumed by the IT infrastructure especially the larger scale distributed systems. In this paper, a novel idea for optimizing the Energy Consumption (EC for short) of MapReduce system is proposed. We argue that a fair data placement is helpful to save energy, and then we propose three goals of data placement, and a modulo based Data Placement Algorithm (DPA for short) which achieves these goals. Afterwards, the correctness of the proposed DPA is proved from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Three different systems which implement MapReduce model with different DPAs are compared in our experiments. Our algorithm is proved to optimize EC effectively, without introducing the additional costs and delaying data loading. With the help of our DPA, the EC for the WordCount , Sort and MRBench can be reduced by 10.9 %, 8.3 % and 17 % respectively, and time consumption is reduced by 7 %, 6.3 % and 7 % respectively.

Abstract: In an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the amount of resources allocated to a virtual machine (VM) at creation time may be expressed with relative values (relative to the hardware, i.e., a fraction of the capacity of a device) or absolute values (i.e., a performance metric which is independent from the capacity of the hardware). Surprisingly, disk or network resource allocations are expressed with absolute values (bandwidth), but CPU resource allocations are expressed with relative values (a percentage of a processor). The major problem with CPU relative value allocations is that it depends on the capacity of the CPU, which may vary due to different factors (server heterogeneity in a cluster, Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS)). In this paper, we analyze the side effects and drawbacks of relative allocations. We claim that CPU allocation should be expressed with absolute values. We propose such a CPU resource management system and we demonstrate and evaluate its benefits. We identify issues related to changing underlying hardware in public IaaS.We propose a solution for DVFS and VM migration across heterogeneous nodes.We provide an implementation of our solution within the Xen hypervisor.The evaluation of our prototype confirms the accuracy of our solution.

Abstract: Part 3: Task Modelling and Task-Based Approaches; International audience; Evaluation results focusing on usability and user experience are often difficult to be taken into account during an iterative design process. This is due to the fact that evaluation exploits concrete artefacts (prototype or system) while design and development are based on more abstract descriptions such as task models or software models. As concrete data cannot be represented, evaluation results are just discarded. This paper addresses the problem of discrepancy between abstract view of task models and concrete data produced in evaluations by first, describing the requirements for a task modelling notation: (a) representation of data for each individual participant, (b) representation of aggregated data for one evaluation as well as (c) several evaluations and (d) the need to visualize multi-dimensional data from the evaluation as well as the interactive system gathered during runtime. Second: by showing how the requirements were integrated in a task modelling tool. Using an example from an experimental evaluation possible usages of the tool are demonstrated.

Abstract: Reducing the lack of consistency between requirements and the system that should satisfy these requirements is one of the major issue in Requirement Engineering (RE). The objective of my thesis work is to propose a seamless approach, allowing users to express requirements, specifications and the system itself in a unique language. The purpose of formal approaches is to reduce inconsistency. However, most developers are not familiar with these approaches, and they are not often used outside the critical systems domain. Since we want that non-experts can also use our approach to validate systems in the early stage of their development, we propose a Domain Specific Language (DSL) that is: (i) close to natural language, and (ii) based on a formal semantics. Using Model-Driven Engineering (MDE), this language bridges the gap not only between the several stakeholders that can be involved in a project, considering their different backgrounds, but also between the requirements and the code.

Abstract: International audience; In recent years, the question of the energy consumption of data centers has become more and more important, and several studies raised the possibility of using renewable energy to power them. The intermittent nature of commonly used renewable energy sources is a major drawback of using them directly on-site. In this paper, we present an approach for scheduling batch jobs with due date constraints, which takes into account the availability of the renewable energy to reduce the need of brown energy and therefore running cost. The approach we propose differs from the existing methods by providing a scheduling algorithm agnostic of the electrical infrastructure. A separated system, managing the renewable sources, provides an arbitrary objective function, which is used to guide the scheduling heuristic. We implemented our approach in a data center simulator, and evaluated it by considering a small-scale center powered with solar panels and connected to the electrical grid. The relationship between the flexibility allowed by the user negotiated SLAs and the behavior of the algorithm is studied, and compared to existing approaches from the literature. Our experiments show a reduction of brown energy consumption up to 49% and a cost saving up to 51%, compared to a traditional scheduler unaware of renewable availability.
