A wide variety of Hardware Trojan countermeasures have been developed, but less work has been done to determine which are optimal for any given design. To address this, we consider not only metrics related to the performance of the countermeasure, but also the likely action of an adversary given their goals. Trojans are inserted by an adversary to accomplish an end, so these goals must be considered and quantified in order to predict these actions. The model presented here builds upon a security economic approach that models the adversary and defender motives and goals in the context of empirically derived countermeasure efficacy metrics. The approach supports formation of a two-player strategic game to determine optimal strategy selection for both adversary and defender. A game may be played in a variety of contexts, including consideration of the entire design lifecycle or only a step in product development. As a demonstration of the practicality of this approach, we present an experiment that derives efficacy metrics from a set of countermeasures (defender strategies) when tested against a taxonomy of Trojans (adversary strategies). We further present a software framework, GameRunner, that automates not only the solution to the game but also mathematical and graphical exploration of “what if” scenarios in the context of the game. GameRunner can also issue “prescriptions,” a set of commands that allows the defender to automate the application of the optimal defender strategy to their circuit of concern. Finally, we include a discussion of ongoing work to include additional software tools, a more advanced experimental framework, and the application of irrationality models to account for players who make subrational decisions.

Smart buildings are socio-technical systems that bring together building systems, IoT technology and occupants. A multitude of embedded sensors continually collect and share building data on a large scale which is used to understand and streamline daily operations. Much of this data is highly influenced by the presence of building occupants and could be used to monitor and track their location and activities. The combination of open accessibility to smart building data and stringent data protection legislation such as the GDPR makes the privacy of smart building occupants a concern. Until now, little if any research exists on occupant privacy in work-based or commercial smart buildings. This paper begins to address this gap by reporting on a study conducted amongst occupants of a state-of-the-art commercial smart building to understand their privacy concerns and preferences. Our results show that the majority of the occupants are not familiar with the types of data being collected, that it is subtly related to them, nor the privacy risks associated with it. When we informed occupants about this data and the risks, they became more concerned and called for more transparency in the data collection process. The occupants were also largely averse to open accessibility of the collected data.

To successfully operate in a harsh environment like the Arctic Ocean, one must be able to understand and predict how that environment will evolve over different spatial and temporal scales. This is particularly challenging given the on-going and significant environmental changes that are occurring in the region. Access to the most recent environmental information provides timely knowledge that enables ship-based operations to proceed efficiently, effectively and safely in this difficult arena. Knowledge of the evolving environmental conditions during a field campaign is critical for effective planning, optimal execution of sampling strategies, and to provide a broader context to data collected at specific times and places. We describe the collaborations and processes that enabled an operational system to be developed to provide a remote field-team, located on USCGC Healy in the Beaufort Sea, with near real-time situational awareness information regarding the weather, sea ice conditions, and oceanographic processes. The developed system included the punctual throughput of near real-time products such as satellite imagery, meteorological forecasts, ice charts, model outputs, and up to date locations of key sea ice and ocean-based assets. Science and operational users, as well as onshore personnel, used this system for real-time practical considerations such as ship navigation, and to time scientific operations to ensure the appropriate sea ice and weather conditions prevailed. By presenting the outputs of the system within the context of case studies our results clearly demonstrate the benefits that improved situational awareness brings to ship-based operations in the Arctic Ocean, both today and in the future.

A fundamental aspect of biological intelligence, from microbes to megafauna, is the ability to forage for the provisions required to sustain life. This sometimes underrated ability to seek out, identify, and use objects of interest in an environment with limited prior knowledge is an important capability that is also needed by robots. Many robotics applications can be modeled as foraging problems, such as search and rescue, wildlife tracking, crop pollination and harvesting, mining and in-situ-resource utilization, and scientific data/sample collection.

This paper presents the design of Cataglyphis, a research rover that won the NASA Sample Return Robot Centennial Challenge in 2015. During the challenge, Cataglyphis was the only robot that was able to autonomously find, retrieve, and return multiple types of samples in a large natural environment without using Earth-specific sensors such as GPS and magnetic compasses. It navigates through a fusion of measurements collected from inertial sensors, wheel encoders, a nodding Lidar, a set of ranging radios, a camera on a panning platform, and a sun sensor. In addition to visual detection of a homing beacon, computer vision algorithms provide the sample detection, identification, and localization capabilities, with low false positive and false negative rates demonstrated during the competition. The mission planning and control software enables robot behaviors, determines sequences of actions, and helps the robot to recover from various failure conditions. A compliant, under-actuated manipulator conforms to the natural terrain before picking up samples of various size, weight, and shape.

Variability exists amongst reported levelized costs of energy (LCOEs) for wind. Wind is unique from traditional energy sources in that the fuel is free, with the majority of costs determined by capital expenses. Power purchase agreements (PPAs) are critical to the success of a project, offering a guarantee of long-term revenue. Integral to negotiating a PPA is having an accurate estimate of the LCOE for the project. This research will evaluate LCOEs for wind to uncover reasons for substantial differences. PPA ownership structures and elements will also be evaluated with consideration of how objectives, resources, and farm management will impact decisions. The importance of understanding LCOE components as they relate to PPA negotiations will be highlighted with a focus on emerging markets and case analyses using NREL's System Advisor Model (SAM). We present an approach to enhance wheeled planetary rover dead-reckoning localization performance by leveraging the use of zero-type constraint equations in the navigation filter. Without external aiding, inertial navigation solutions inherently exhibit cubic error growth. Furthermore, for planetary rovers that are traversing diverse types of terrain, wheel odometry is often unreliable for use in localization, due to wheel slippage. For current Mars rovers, computer vision-based approaches are generally used whenever there is a high possibility of positioning error; however, these strategies require additional computational power, energy resources, and significantly slow down the rover traverse speed. To this end, we propose a navigation approach that compensates for the high likelihood of odometry errors by providing a reliable navigation solution that leverages non-holonomic vehicle constraints as well as state-aware pseudo-measurements (e.g., zero velocity and zero angular rate) updates during periodic stops. By using this, computationally expensive visual-based corrections could be performed less often. Experimental tests that compare against GPS-based localization are used to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed approach. Zika virus has rapidly spread through the World Health Organization's Region of the Americas since being identified in Brazil in early 2015. Transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Aedes species mosquitoes, Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause spontaneous abortion and birth defects, including microcephaly (1,2). New York City (NYC) is home to a large number of persons who travel frequently to areas with active Zika virus transmission, including immigrants from these areas. In November 2015, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) began developing and implementing plans for managing Zika virus and on February 1, 2016, activated its Incident Command System. During January 1-June 17, 2016, DOHMH coordinated diagnostic laboratory testing for 3,605 persons with travel-associated exposure, 182 (5.0%) of whom had confirmed Zika virus infection. Twenty (11.0%) confirmed patients were pregnant at the time of diagnosis. In addition, two cases of Zika virus-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome were diagnosed. DOHMH's response has focused on 1) identifying and diagnosing suspected cases; 2) educating the public and medical providers about Zika virus risks, transmission, and prevention strategies, particularly in areas with large populations of immigrants from areas with ongoing Zika virus transmission; 3) monitoring pregnant women with Zika virus infection and their fetuses and infants; 4) detecting local mosquito-borne transmission through both human and mosquito surveillance; and 5) modifying existing Culex mosquito control measures by targeting Aedes species of mosquitoes through the use of larvicides and adulticides.

Modern commercial EDA tools provide end users with a framework for application specific customizations through a general-purpose programming language interface to an underlying circuit object model. Xilinx Vivado exposes that information through Tcl. This work demonstrates an implementation of a static hardware detection algorithm utilizing this interface of Vivado.

A popular cigarette advertisement from the 1960s exclaimed, You ve come a long way, Baby! That sentiment could be applied to Naval Oceanography. The US Navy has navigated the course of developing prediction technology over many fundamental shifts in global geopolitics while addressing the evolving challenges at the forefront of the oceanography mission to ensure the safety of the nation s armed forces. Originally motivated by Soviet-era submarine programs, accurate acoustic prediction necessitated forecasting the positions of ocean fronts and eddies. Since then, the scope of Naval Oceanography has expanded to encompass a littoral focus, including applications that assist Navy SEa Air and Land (SEAL) teams, amphibious vehicle landings, and mine warfare. The fundamental physics governing the universe remains unchanged and so has the Navy s need to understand ocean physics, build numerical representations, connect to data streams, and assimilate observations in order to provide forecasts addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow. A well-planned course is no accident, and the Navy s leading edge in ocean prediction is the result. This paper provides a description of the path to this leading edge, a synthesis of the current operational architecture that enables Naval Oceanography, an analysis of the triumphs of the last 10 years that are part of today s oceanography portfolio, and a prediction of what the next 10 years holds for Naval Oceanography.

This article describes how one large correctional mental health system modified its traditional methods of providing services at remote rural prisons. It describes the system as it existed in the more traditional mode, then describes the transition to using more telepsychiatry/ psychology and fewer on-site clinics. It also reports on a staff opinion survey of both the on-site and remote telepsych clinics. Finally, it provides recommendations and a checklist that can assist others who may be deciding to use combination methods of on-site and telepsychiatry in their prison systems.

Adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) can be passively transferred in Dark Agouti (DA) rats by spleen and lymph node cells after culture with Concanavalin A (Con A). A model not requiring in vitro Con A expansion and activation would be important in investigations of anti-rheumatic drugs in AIA. A new model using irradiated recipients fills this need. Donor DA rats treated with 0.1 ml complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) containing 7.5 mg M. butyricum/ml were sacrificed 11 days after CFA injection, donor spleen cells harvested, and donor spleen cells injected intravenously into recipient DA rats previously irradiated with 5 Gy. Recipient rats developed arthritis 4-14 days after spleen cell transfer. This model can now be used to further define the effects of anti-rheumatic drugs in the passive transfer of AIA by eliminating the need for the in vitro Con A-induced expansion and/or activation of donor cells.

Objective The objective of this study was to compare the antimicrobial activity of commercially available antiseptic mouthrinses against saliva-derived plaque biofilms in static and flow-through biofilm systems in vitro. Methods Nine mouthrinses were tested in a recirculating flow-through biofilm model (RFTB) with viability assessment by ATP bioluminescence. In addition, five mouthrinses were evaluated in a batch chamber slide biofilm (BCSB) model, using live/dead staining and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results In the RFTB model, essential oil (EO) and chlorhexidine (CHX)-containing rinses showed equivalent antimicrobial activity and were more effective than a range of cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC1) formulations. In the BCSB model, twice-daily mouthrinse exposure demonstrated that the EO rinse was significantly more effective than rinses containing amine and stannous fluorides (AFSF), a combination of CPC/CHX, and another CPC formulation (CPC2). EO showed biofilm kill comparable to the CHX rinse. Conclusions The present studies have shown that mouthrinses vary significantly in their capability to kill plaque biofilm bacteria in BCSB and RFTB models. The EO mouthrinse demonstrated superior antiplaque biofilm activity to AFSF, CPC/CHX, and CPC rinses and comparable activity to CHX. The methods tested may be of value for the in-vitro screening of antiseptic rinses with different modes of antimicrobial action.

The effect of flurbiprofen on the passive transfer of adjuvant-induced arthritis was studied to determine if flurbiprofen acted in the donor and/or recipient arms of this model. Groups of donor and recipient rats were treated with either placebo or flurbiprofen 4 mg/kg. Joint scores were markedly decreased in recipient rats treated with flurbiprofen irrespective of the whether donor animals were treated with placebo or flurbiprofen (p less than 0.01). There was also a moderate decrease in the ability of donor cells from rats treated with flurbiprofen to suppress the severity of arthritis (p less than 0.01); however, this effect was less marked than that seen in recipient animals. These data imply that flurbiprofen may act at multiple sites in adjuvant-induced arthritis, but the major site of action of flurbiprofen in this model is in the recipient animals.

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) provide an attractive solution to developers needing custom logic for short time-to-market products. Products embedding FPGA system-on-chip solutions have the advantage in that they can be updated once deployed. New FPGA firmware may be loaded via manufacturer-supplied memory devices or remotely via a network connection. Recent FPGAs allow for self-reconfiguration, where the user-FPGA fabric can internally modify its own configuration data. Using self-reconfiguration, configuration control protocols can be implemented in user logic. This allows new FPGA programming methods to be designed. We propose a versatile partial self-reconfiguration framework for FPGA field updates that customizes to specific applications, reduces reconfiguration times, and minimizes the need for external hardware. The framework provides flexibility in media sources and design security. A prototype using this framework is demonstrated on a Xilinx Virtex-II FPGA.

Skin testing and RAST have verified the existence of tobacco-specific IgE. However, published studies report conflicting results concerning the clinical significance of tobacco IgE. Previous studies have not focused on the role of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) as it relates to tobacco hypersensitivity (TH) in nonsmoking children.We used nonsmoking pediatric patients to investigate the relationship between ETS and TH.Children, ages 4 to 10 years, were prospectively enrolled. ETS exposure and smoke-triggered symptoms were recorded by questionnaire and physician history. Patients were given a skin test (ST) with a panel of aeroallergens plus tobacco extract. A ST reaction to at least one aeroallergen classified a patient as atopic; a ST reaction to tobacco classified a patient as TH.We enrolled 170 patients, mean age 7.2 years. We found 58 (34%) patients reported routine exposure to ETS and 78 (46%) patients reported ETS-induced symptoms. We found 121 (71%) atopic patients and 61 (36%) TH patients. TH was more common in atopic patients (P.0001) and those routinely exposed to ETS (P.05). However, TH failed to predict ETS-induced symptoms in either atopic or non-atopic patients (PPV = 0.40, NPV = 0.69).We evaluated the clinical significance of TH in a nonsmoking patient population related to ETS exposure. We concluded that although TH is statistically related to atopy and ETS exposure, the low predictive values of skin testing for TH limit its clinical usefulness.

The efficacy of combined use of toothpaste and oral rinse containing sanguinaria extract and zinc chloride was compared to placebo products in a 6-month clinical trial. Sixty subjects with moderate levels of plaque and gingivitis were randomly assigned to active and placebo groups. Noninvasive measures of plaque and gingivitis were assessed at baseline and at 2, 6, 8, 14, 20, and 28 weeks. Bleeding on probing was measured at baseline and 6, 14, and 28 weeks. Active group scores were significantly lower (P less than .0001) than placebo scores at each post-baseline time point for all indices, with the exception of plaque at 2 weeks. The 28 week active group scores were 21% lower than the placebo group for plaque, 25% lower for gingivitis, and 43% lower for bleeding on probing. No dental staining or taste alteration was reported in the active group. Three of 30 active group subjects exhibited minor soft tissue irritations that resolved spontaneously without discontinuation of product use. Results indicate that the test products showed good levels of safety and efficacy when administered in a combined use regimen for 6 months.

Previous reports have described a method by which multiple constituents can be analyzed from a sample of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) collected with a precut filter paper strip. In this study the relationship of changes in GCF levels of the vertebrate (lysosomal) enzymes beta-glucuronidase (BG) and arylsulfatase (AS) and the cytoplasmic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was evaluated longitudinally in reference to loss of clinical attachment in patients with existing chronic adult periodontitis. Thirty-six patients were followed for six months. Clinical attachment loss was recorded as the change between the baseline and three month examinations, and the three- and six-month examinations. GCF analysis was performed at baseline and three months. Three groups of patients were identified based on disease progression. Group I patients (N = 5) displayed a generalized form of disease activity. In these patients we observed clinical attachment loss of at least 2.0 mm at a minimum of three unrelated sites. Group II patients (N = 4) displayed a localized form of disease activity. In these patients clinical attachment loss of at least 2.5 mm occurred at one site, or two anatomically related sites. Group III patients (N = 27) did not display clinical attachment loss as defined here. Enzyme analysis was evaluated as a whole mouth score (the per cent of samples from a patient in which enzyme activity was at least twice the population mean) and at individual samples. Group I patients could be identified by elevated whole mouth scores for BG, while Group II patients could not be identified by whole mouth scores for any of the enzymes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
