In deaths considered not to arise from natural causes, the physician participating in the forensic death examination is asked to determine the possible time of death by evaluating the injuries on the body and post-mortem findings that have emerged on the corpse, and to give an opinion about the most likely cause of death. These examinations, which should primarily be performed by a forensic medicine specialist, are also conducted by physicians working in primary health care. In this study, we have aimed to develop a standardized form that we think will be a guide to provide convenience to physicians participating in forensic death examination.While creating the post-mortem forensic examination form presented in this study, the general forensic examination reporting form recommended to be used in today’s daily medical practice was taken as the sample. The form consisted of sections related to “determinants of medical identity”, “post-mortem findings”, “injury-related lesions”, “probable cause of death according to findings in the examination” and “decision made”. Body diagrams were added to mark the locations of the lesions on the corpse.Certain standardization is achieved in the reports issued by the physician in forensic cases with the preparation of general forensic examination reporting forms. However, there is no standardized form used for forensic post-mortem examination in our country. As the time between postmortem examination and forensic autopsy increases, post-mortem findings on the corpse may change. Therefore, the findings observed during forensic post-mortem examinations should be accurately defined and recorded. Lacks or mistakes made during this process may cause critical problems in the functioning of the justice system.We anticipate that the deficiencies in the post-mortem forensic examination process can be reduced by using this form, which has been shaped into a conformation suitable for the needs of physicians participating in a post-mortem examination.

Background Spontaneous combustion of coal is one of the factors which causes direct or indirect gas and dust explosion, mine fire, the release of toxic gases, loss of reserve, and loss of miners' life. To avoid these incidents, the prediction of spontaneous combustion is essential. The safety of miner's in the mining field can be assured if the prediction of a coal fire is carried out at an early stage. Method Adularya Underground Coal Mine which is fully mechanized with longwall mining method was selected as a case study area. The data collected for 2017, by sensors from ten gas monitoring stations were used for the simulation and prediction of a coal fire. In this study, the fuzzy logic model is used because of the uncertainties, nonlinearity, and imprecise variables in the data. For coal fire prediction, CO, O2, N2, and temperature were used as input variables whereas fire intensity was considered as the output variable.The simulation of the model is carried out using the Mamdani inference system and run by the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox in MATLAB. Results The results showed that the fuzzy logic system is more reliable in predicting fire intensity with respect to uncertainties and nonlinearities of the data. It also indicates that the 1409 and 610/2B gas station points have a greater chance of causing spontaneous combustion and therefore require a precautional measure. Conclusion The fuzzy logic model shows higher probability in predicting fire intensity with the simultaneous application of many variables compared with Graham's index.

This research was established under the ecological conditions of Nevşehir in the Central Anatolia Region, whereby lentil agriculture is practiced in Turkey. Research was carried out in order to reveal the important features of indigenous and exotic lentil genotypes which may be the basis for future breeding studies. A total of 220 domestic and foreign originated lentil genotypes and 4 varieties (Pul Mercimek, Yerli Kırmızı, Çağıl, Fırat-87) as standard were grown. Field trial was established on April 10, 2017 according to the Augmented trial design with 5 blocks. According to the results of the research, following ranges were determined; 50% flowering days 46.5-82.00 days, vegetation length 79.85-120.85 days, plant height 17.68-43.99 cm, number of pods per plant 9.21-440.62 pieces, weight of 1000 seed 12.92-78.31 g, seed yield 0.19 -35.88 g plant-1 were determined. As a result; the lentil genotypes were found on the morphological and agricultural characteristics of our selected varieties. These superior genotypes can be used as material in breeding studies for future programs.

Coal mines have sudden, usually unexpected expulsions of gas in conjunction with coal into the mine workings. The gas is mainly consisted of methane making this so-called coal and gas outburst a major hazard affecting the safety and productivity of an underground coal mine. Several parameters affect this outburst hazard. In this study, a statistical method namely structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to identify the relationships between the parameters affecting the coal and gas outbursts for an underground coal mine in Turkey and to analyze multiple interactions between them. The model includes main factors (mining depth, coal seam gas content and moisture content) and contributor factors (seam thickness, seam inclination and distance from fault). The results indicate that mining depth is the most efficient factor in main factors and distance from fault is the most significant contributor to outburst.

Dust-related occupational diseases are common in the mining sector. It is important to identify employees who have high potential for these diseases and to investigate the factors affecting disease formation. For this reason, dust and dust-related occupational diseases should be carefully investigated in mining operations. In this study, dust-related occupational diseases in an open-pit lignite mine were investigated. Firstly, dust measurements were performed and then a health check of all employees was implemented. The obtained data set was categorized by taking into account the occupation, age, experience and level of dust exposure of the employees. While the logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the probability of the diseases, a hierarchical loglinear model was established to investigate the factors in the occurrence of these diseases for those employees with the diseases. Therefore, the most important factors for the development of the diseases were determined by the hierarchical loglinear model.

Present research was realized during 2017 vegetation period in Konya ecological conditions according to Augmented Trial Design for the purpose of better yield, some superior traits and using in breeding programs of the bean genotypes, a total of 122 bean lines which are collected from domestic and abroad sources and 3 standard varieties – as control were used in the study. Results showed the minimum and maximum values as following; 3.01 – 392.96 g for yield per plant, 10.76 – 74.41 g for hundred seed weight, 6.67 – 246.67 cm for plant height, 1.78 – 3.44 cm for number of main branches per plant, 1.94 – 87.39 for number of pod per plant, 1.39 – 5.75 for number of seed per pod, 108 – 186 days for vegetation length. According to the results of the present study, bean genotypes presented a wide variation. Totally, 14 genotypes showed higher seed yield than the control varieties which means those genotypes are promising as genetic source for the breeding work.

Detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii and its DNA in clinically asymptomatic people is defined as colonization. The aim of this study was to reveal the colonization prevalence of P. jirovecii and affecting factors in an immunocompetent population. The study included 200 cases undergoing forensic autopsy between February 2015 and April 2015. The cause of death was non-medical conditions (group 1) in 111 cases (55.5 %), medical conditions (group 2) in 73 cases (36.5 %) and undetermined (group 3) in 16 cases (group 3). Tissue specimens about 1 g in weight were taken from the right upper pulmonary lobe. After DNA extraction, nested PCR targeting mitochondrial large subunit rRNA was used to detect P. jirovecii. Of 200 cases, 37 (18.5 %) had P. jirovecii DNA. There was not a significant difference in place of living, gender, smoking status and medication use between the cases with P. jirovecii and those without P. jirovecii. A significantly high rate of P. jirovecii colonization was detected in group 2 (chi(2) = 7.674; P=0.022). P. jirovecii-colonized cases also had a chronic disease in 2 of 13 (group 1), 12 of 20 (group 2) and 1 of 4 (group 3) cases (chi(2) = 5.571; P=0.062). A significantly high rate of the cases aged 0-1 year had P. jirovecii (5/11; 45.5 %) (chi(2) = 5.639; P=0.018). The results of the study suggest that infants and patients with chronic diseases like cardiac or pulmonary diseases can be at risk for P. jirovecii colonization.

Ventilation is a vital process in underground mining operations. Fans are typically used in these ventilation systems to supply airflow to mines. Sufficient ventilation systems provide adequate fresh air to underground mines to ensure a safe working environment. Thus, the selection of an appropriate fan is an important part of mine ventilation. Several parameters affect fan selection, so the fan selection process is complex and must be compliant with a set of options and criteria. In this study, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used for this task, along with the Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method, to select a main fan for an underground coal mine in Turkey.

Hoffa’s disease (or Hoffa’s fat pad syndrome) is a clinical condition, which develops as a result of impingement of the infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) between the femorotibial and femoropatellar spaces after inflammation and edema, and may cause knee pain.1 It generally begins with trauma at early ages. This condition can be confused with frequent meniscal pathologies of the knee joint. The infrapatellar fat pad is one of the three pads located on the anterior knee together with quadriceps and prefemoral fat pads.2 It is a tissue with known biomechanical functions. However, its endocrine functions are not fully understood.3

Underground mining is considered to be one of the most dangerous industries and mining remains the most hazardous occupation. Categorical analysis of accident records may present valuable information for preventing accidents. In this study, hierarchical loglinear analysis was applied to occupational injuries that occurred in an underground coal mine. The main factors affecting the accidents were defined as occupation, area, reason, accident time and part of body affected. By considering subfactors of the main factors, multiway contingency tables were prepared and, thus, the probabilities that might affect nonfatal injuries were investigated. At the end of the study, important accident risk factors and job groups with a high probability of being exposed to those risk factors were determined. This article presents important information on decreasing the number accidents in underground coal mines.

The levels of noise arise from mining industry seem to be higher when compared to other industries. For this reason, noise exposure and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) are prevalent in mining. Assessment of noise emission levels that arise from various mining operations is required to prevent and minimize the NIHL. Because the studies for preventing occupational hearing loss among miners are inadequate, a quarry and stone crushing-screening plant was selected to generate site-specific data. The noise levels of the environments in which workers work were measured and also a hearing test centre applied hearing tests to the workers. According to the hearing test results, it was determined that the part of workers have hearing loss. The main factors affecting the NIHL were assumed as experience, noise level, miners' age and occupation, and by taking into account the sub factors of the main factors, multi way contingency tables were prepared. Then hierarchical loglinear analysis method was implemented to categorized data; thus, the probabilities might effect NIHL was investigated. At the end of this study, it was found that the most risky occupation group was the drivers, and additionally, these workers were mostly exposed to 70-79 dB(A) noise level. When the important interactions are evaluated, it is determined that 4-11 years experienced crusher workers have high probability of NIHL because of high exposure to 90-99 dB(A) noise level. Moreover, the most important interactions which may affect the NIHL were identified and the precautions to reduce hearing loss were presented.

WOS: 000264620900034, PubMed: 18592389, All major opencast mining activities produce dust. The major operations that produce dust are drilling, blasting, loading, unloading, and transporting. Dust not only deteriorates the environmental air quality in and around the mining site but also creates serious health hazards. Therefore, assessment of dust levels that arise from various opencast mining operations is required to prevent and minimize the health risks. To achieve this objective, an opencast coal mining area was selected to generate site-specific emission data and collect respirable dust measurement samples. The study covered various mining activities in different locations including overburden loading, stock yard, coal loading, drilling, and coal handling plant. The dust levels were examined to assess miners' exposure to respirable dust in each of the opencast mining areas from 1994 to 2005. The data obtained from the dust measurement studies were evaluated by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey-Kramer procedure. The analyses were performed by using MinitabA (R) 14 statistical software. It was concluded that, drilling operations produce higher dust concentration levels and thus, drill operators may have higher incidence of respiratory disorders related to exposure to dust in their work environment.

Auxiliary ventilation is used to ventilate dead-ends of the drivages, and the most common method employed is to use auxiliary fans and ducting. In order to provide a safe and comfortable environment, it is necessary to provide sufficient air to the working areas. The optimum design of auxiliary ventilation systems may be difficult owing to the methods used in the design of such systems that require complex calculations. In this study, by evaluating data gathered from Turkish Hardcoal Enterprises, a predictive model of the volume flow rate reaching the end of a leaky ventilation duct for a simple auxiliary ventilation system was developed using multiple regression analysis. The independent variables that enter the regression were chosen as duct diameter, fan flow output, fan operating pressure, frictional pressure drop, duct length, duct resistance, and resistance coefficient of leakage paths. The coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) obtained for the predictive model was 0.931, and the residual analysis indicated that the model was statistically acceptable. Also, by using the two-sample t-test , it was shown that the developed regression model was consistent with the results obtained from another data set not included in the derivation of the presently developed regression model.

Aim The bone mineral density (BMD) effects of calcitonin (CT) and alendronate (ALEN) therapy either alone or in combination were evaluated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Method Eighty out of 100 patients with RA using methotrexate 5‐12.5 mg/week and prednisone 5‐10 mg/day were included in the study. These were randomly divided into four groups: the first group was given ALEN 70 mg/week; the second was given 200 IU/day CT nasal spray; and the third group was given combined therapy of 70 mg/week ALEN and 200 IU/day CT nasal spray. The fourth group (control) as well as the other three groups were given 600 mg calcium and 400 IU vitamin D. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry BMD of lumbar, hip and forearm regions and laboratory investigations were performed before and at the 12th month of the therapy. Reuslts Only the combined therapy group displayed significant decreases of alkaline phosphatase levels, pointing out that the high bone turnover seen in RA patients can only be normalized by combination therapy. Also the combined therapy group showed significant increases at the lumbar and hip regions, whereas at the forearm regions BMD values stabilized.

Auxiliary ventilation is performed by carrying intake or return air in ducts. The complete elimination of air leakage from or into the ducting system is impossible due to duct quality and numerous joints in ducting system. The auxiliary ventilation systems for long drivages often require the use of multiple fans. Fans are installed in series and separated from each other in fixed or variable lengths. There are many methods proposed for the analysis air flow problems in leaky ducts. Due to the lengthy calculations, computers are often needed to conduct the analyses. In this study, a method known as “series–parallel combination of the duct and leakage path” has been introduced and a computer program has been developed based on this method. In order to design the conditions of an auxiliary ventilated drivage, in situ measurement have been made in Western Lignite Enterprises (GLI) OMERLER underground coal mine (Turkey) and the related data necessary for this study was collected. The presently developed program was tested using these data, and it was found that the measured and calculated values are quite close. The effective operational parameters governing auxiliary ventilation have been investigated and the effects of these variables on the volume rate of air flow reaching long drivage face have been examined by using linear regression analysis. Finally, it was concluded that the increase of duct diameter has prime importance in achieving the adequate air flow to the face and that for the auxiliary fans considered in this study the selection of fan does not greatly affect the volume rate reaching the face in a long duct line.

Background and objectives: Guillain-Barré Syndrome is one of the most common causes of acute polyneuropathy in adults. Recently, the occurrence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome after major and minor surgical operations has been increasingly debated. In Guillain-Barré syndrome, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and dysautonomy are generally observed after maximal motor deficit. Case report: A 44-year-old male patient underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. After the development of a severe headache, nausea, diplopia, and attacks of hypertension in the early postoperative period, a computer tomography of the brain was normal. Laboratory tests revealed hyponatremia linked to syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, the patient's fluids were restricted, and furosemide and 3% NaCl treatment was initiated. On the second day postoperative, the patient developed numbness moving upward from the hands and feet, loss of strength, difficulty swallowing and respiratory distress. Guillain-Barré syndrome was suspected, and the patient was moved to intensive care. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed 320 mg/dL protein, and acute motor-sensorial axonal neuropathy was identified by electromyelography. Guillain-Barré syndrome was diagnosed, and intravenous immune globulin treatment (0.4 g/kg/day, 5 days) was initiated. After 10 days in the intensive care unit, at which the respiratory, hemodynamic, neurologic and laboratory results returned to normal, the patient was transferred to the neurology service. Conclusions: Our case report indicates that although syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and autonomic dysfunction are rarely the initial characteristics of Guillain-Barré syndrome, the possibility of postoperative syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion should be kept in mind. The presence of secondary hyponatremia in this type of clinical presentation may delay diagnosis. Recentemente, a ocorrência após grandes e pequenas intervenções cirúrgicas tem sido cada vez mais debatida. Na Guillain-Barré, a síndrome da secreção inapropriada do hormônio antidiurético e a disautonomia são geralmente observadas após déficit motor máximo. Relato de caso: paciente do sexo masculino, 44 anos, submetido a colecistectomia videolaparoscópica para colecistite aguda. Após desenvolver uma forte dor de cabeça, náusea, diplopia e ataques de hipertensão no período pós-operatório imediato, uma tomografia computadorizada do cérebro revelou-se normal. Os exames laboratoriais revelaram hiponatremia associada à síndrome de secreção inadequada de hormônio antidiurético; os líquidos foram restritos e tratamento com furosemida e NaCl a 3% foi iniciado. No segundo dia pós-operatório, o paciente desenvolveu dormência que se propagava a partir das mãos e dos pés, perda de força, dificuldade para engolir e respirar. Conclusões: nosso relato de caso indica que, embora a síndrome de secreção inapropriada do hormônio antidiurético e a disfunção autonômica raramente sejam características iniciais da síndrome de Guillain-Barré, a possibilidade de ocorrência pós-operatória da síndrome de secreção inadequada do hormônio antidiurético deve ser considerada. Recientemente, la aparición del síndrome de Guillain-Barré después de cirugías mayores o menores se ha convertido en objeto de debate cada vez mayor. En el síndrome de Guillain-Barré, generalmente se observan síndrome de secreción inapropiada de hormona antidiurética y disautonomía después de un déficit motor máximo. Relato de caso: paciente de sexo masculino, 44 años, sometido a colecistectomía laparoscópica por colecistitis aguda. Después de comenzar con un fuerte dolor de cabeza, náuseas, diplopía y ataques de hipertensión en el período postoperatorio inmediato, una tomografía computadorizada del cerebro del paciente se reveló normal. Las pruebas de laboratorio revelaron hiponatremia asociada con el síndrome de secreción inadecuada de hormona antidiurética; los líquidos se restringieron y se inició tratamiento con furosemida y NaCl al 3%. En el segundo día del postoperatorio, el paciente presentó adormecimiento que se propagaba desde las manos y los pies, pérdida de fuerza, dificultad para tragar y para respirar. Se sospechó síndrome de Guillain-Barré y el paciente fue derivado a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. El examen del líquido cefalorraquídeo reveló 320 mg/dL de proteína y mediante electromiografía se identificó neuropatía axonal sensorial y motora aguda. Se diagnosticó síndrome de Guillain-Barré y se inició el tratamiento intravenoso con inmunoglobulina (0,4 g/kg/día, durante 5 días). Después de 10 días en la unidad de cuidados intensivos, durante los cuales los parámetros respiratorio, hemodinámico, neurológico y de laboratorio volvieron a la normalidad, el paciente fue derivado al servicio de neurología. Conclusiones: nuestro relato de caso indica que, aunque el síndrome de secreción inapropiada de hormona antidiurética y la disfunción autonómica rara vez son características iniciales del síndrome de Guillain-Barré, debe tenerse en cuenta la posibilidad de que en el postoperatorio aparezca el síndrome de secreción inadecuada de hormona antidiurética. La presencia de hiponatremia secundaria en ese tipo de presentación clínica puede retrasar el diagnóstico.

As mining operations go deeper, working conditions become more severe because of high temperature and moisture. The major heat source in deep mines is geothermal heat from the strata. Apart from the rise in rock temperature occurring as working depths increase, the air in mines is also affected by other heat sources. In modern face workings, for example, outputs of between 1,000 and 2,000 kWh may be installed for face conveyors, ploughs and shearers. This involves not only the heat given off by electrical units but also the heat released when stone and coal are being broken away. The mine climate is also affected by the high moisture content of the air, especially as water is required for dust control and large quantities of water collect in the workings owing to geological conditions 1, 2) .

Despite the all precautions, underground coal mining is one of the dangerous industries owing to fatal occupational accidents. Accidents are complicated events to which many factors effect on their formation and preventing them is only possible by the analyses of the accident occurred in past and by straight evaluation of the obtained results. In this study, hierarchical loglinear analysis method was implemented to occupational fatalities occurred in the period of 1980-2004 in the five underground coal mines of Turkish Hardcoal Enterprises which has the most important coal production areas in Turkey. The accident records were evaluated and the main factors affecting the accidents were defined as mine, miners' age, occupation, and accident type. By taking into account the sub factors of the main factors, multi way contingency tables were prepared and thus, the probabilities might effect fatality accidents were investigated. At the end of this study, it was found that the mostly affected job group by the fatality accidents was the production workers and additionally, these workers were mostly exposed to roof collapses and methane explosions. Moreover, important accident risk factors and the occupational job groups which have high probability to be exposed to these risk factors were determined and important information about decreasing the accidents in the underground coal mines were presented.

Dust concentration levels in underground coal mines are of primary importance and have to be controlled to prevent pulmonary disease in miners. Different mining areas are exposed to different dust levels and to minimize the probability of occupational respiratory disease of coal miners, it is necessary to evaluate dust concentration in the different working areas. This study aimed to evaluate dust concentration levels in different areas of underground coal mines. Data obtained from the measurements in 1978-2006 were evaluated with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey-Kramer procedure. It was concluded that production areas had higher dust concentration levels; thus, production workers may have respiratory disorders related to exposure to coal dust in their work environment.
