Corn is a high starchy cereal crop with the highest production and provides over 85% of the starch produced worldwide. Various by-products, differentiated by technological process features such as steep liquor, corn germ, corn bran, gluten, are created largely during corn starch processing. They are inexpensive, nutrient-rich, and vary widely in chemical composition such as proteins, oils, carbohydrates, and minerals. In an increasingly resource-constrained modern world, the utilization approach of these by-products for non-starch industrial processing is attractive widely considering both nutritive value and economic aspects. In fact, at present, applications of these by-products can often be found in feed, fermentation, nutrient extraction and other industries. For example, protein-rich corn gluten can be used as a good animal feed, and corn germ can be used as a raw material for the high-quality edible oil industry. Undoubtedly, increasing utilization means that these by-products will no longer be treated as waste but will be transformed into high value-added products. In this work, the separation process and chemical composition of several main by-products of the corn starch industry is briefly described, and the application in many industrial fields of these by-products over the last ten years are discussed in particular. This review attempts to summarize all aspects of the application and research of these by-products. For the by-products of the corn starch industry, the most promising way is to be utilized in high value and used to produce high value-added products. According to the characteristics of their chemical composition, they have a better application prospect and research significance in the industries directly related to human beings, such as medicine, green food and health care products. In fact, in recent years, some researchers have recognized this and carried out the research. It is clear from these studies that the main issues to be faced now and in the future are how to produce efficiently while maintaining the quality of the product and using it effectively. The retrospective discussions also provide some ideas for other grain and oilseed crops to be fully utilized.

A type of novel electrospun supramolecular hybrid microfibers comprising poly(9-(4-(octyloxy)-phenyl)-2,7-fluoren-9-ol) (PPFOH) and poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) are successfully prepared for intriguing multi-color emission properties. The supramolecular tunable PPFOH aggregation in PVK matrix endows the complex with a smart energy transfer behavior to obtain the multi-color emissions. In stark contrast to PVK fibers, the emission color of PPFOH/PVK fibers with an efficient dispersion of PPFOH fluorophores at a proper dope ratio can be tuned in a wide spectrum of blue (0.1%), sky blue (0.5%), nearly white (1%), cyan (2%), green (5%) and yellow (10%). Besides, conductive behaviors of the microfiber were demonstrated in accompany with the increment of the doping ratio of PPFOH to PVK. Successful fabrication of polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) based on the blended electrospun fiber provided a further evidence of its excellent electrical property for potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) has the characteristics of high energy and low emittance, which requires that the 1st natural frequency of the magnet support assembly should be better than 54 Hz and the moving resolution of girder should be less than 5 μm. The prototypes have been designed and fabricated to meet the requirements. In the design process of the support system model, double-wedge adjusting mechanism and concrete plinth construction are adopted to meet the requirements of adjusting resolution and stability. The FEA and the dynamic stiffness testing technique are used to verify the rationality of the design model. The stability and motion performance tests are performed to verify that the prototype meets the design requirements. Experimental results show that, in all cases, the lowest first-order natural frequency of the support system is 55 Hz, the amplification between magnet and ground is less than 1.05 in the directions perpendicular to the beam, the moving resolution can reach 1 µm, and the girder can be locked in place with an error of less than 5 μm. The prototype of HEPS support system meets the requirements of stability and motion performance. The girder body and wedge mechanism made with iron or steel have little influence on the stability of the support system. The accuracy of dynamic stiffness test and finite element simulation results is verified. Further test will be performed in the HEPS site to verify the performance.

Background Lung squamous-cell carcinoma (SqCC) is the second most common histology in non-small-cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs). The treatment options for advanced lung SqCC are still an unmet medical need. Apatinib, a small-molecule inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), is beneficial in the therapy of advanced NSCLC patients. This study aimed to preliminarily assess the efficacy and safety of low-dosage apatinib in patients with advanced lung SqCC. Methods In this single-arm, open-label, investigator-initiated phase II prospective study (ChiCTR1800019808), we enrolled patients aged 54–80 years with platinum-refractory or chemotherapy rejected advanced lung squamous-cell carcinoma. Key exclusion criteria included major blood vessel involvement and gross hemoptysis with an amount of more than 20 mL. Apatinib at an initial dose of 250 mg was administered to patients once daily until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, withdrawal, or death. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) in all patients. We assessed the adverse events according to the treatment received. Results Thirty-eight patients were enrolled between June 11, 2015 and August 29, 2018. Two patients failed to evaluate treatment efficacy for personal reasons, and thus 36 patients were eligible for evaluation of tumor response to apatinib. Median PFS was 4.9 months (95% CI: 3.0–6.8 months). Six patients achieved partial response (PR); the objective response rate (ORR) was 16.7% (6/36), and the total disease control rate (DCR) was 77.8% (28/36). Followed up to March 2020, 35 of the 38 patients were dead, and the 1-year survival rate was 21.1% (8/38). The median overall survival (OS) was 6.9 months (95% CI: 5.2–8.5 months). The most common adverse events included fatigue (50.0%), hypertension (42.1%), proteinuria (23.7%), loss of appetite (23.1%) and hand-foot reaction (21.1%). No grade 4 adverse effect or drug-related mortality occurred. Conclusions Low-dose apatinib monotherapy might be an option for patients with advanced lung squamous-cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND Little is known about the clinical significance of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) motility disorders and their association with the treatment response of type II achalasia. None of the three versions of the Chicago Classification of Esophageal Motility Disorders has defined UES abnormality metrics or their function. UES abnormalities exist in some patients and indicate a clinically significant problem in patients with achalasia. AIM To demonstrate the manometric differentiation on high-resolution esophageal manometry between subjects with abnormal UES and normal UES, and the association between UES type and the treatment response of type II achalasia. METHODS In total, 498 consecutive patients referred for high-resolution esophageal manometry were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups, those with normal and abnormal UES function. UES parameters were analyzed after determining lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function. Patients with type II achalasia underwent pneumatic dilation for treatment. Using mixed model analyses, correlations between abnormal UES and treatment response were calculated among subjects with type II achalasia. RESULTS Of the 498 consecutive patients, 246 (49.40%) were found to have UES abnormalities. Impaired relaxation alone was the most common UES abnormality (52.85%, n = 130). The incidence rate of type II achalasia was significantly higher in subjects with abnormal UES than those with normal UES (9.77% vs 2.58%, P = 0.01). After pneumatic dilation, LES resting pressure, LES integrated relaxation pressure, and UES residual pressure were significantly decreased (41.91 ± 9.20 vs 26.18 ± 13.08, 38.94 ± 10.28 vs 16.71 ± 5.65, and 11.18 ± 7.93 vs 5.35 ± 4.77, respectively, P < 0.05). According to the Eckardt score, subjects with type II achalasia and abnormal UES presented a significantly poorer treatment response than those with normal UES (83.33% vs 0.00%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Impaired relaxation alone is the most common UES abnormality. The incidence of type II achalasia is associated with abnormal UES. Type II achalasia with abnormal UES has a poorer treatment response, which is a potentially prognostic indicator of treatment for this disease.

In December 2019, a new type viral pneumonia cases occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province; and then named “2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)” by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 12 January 2020. For it is a never been experienced respiratory disease before and with infection ability widely and quickly, it attracted the world’s attention but without treatment and control manual. For the request from frontline clinicians and public health professionals of 2019-nCoV infected pneumonia management, an evidence-based guideline urgently needs to be developed. Therefore, we drafted this guideline according to the rapid advice guidelines methodology and general rules of WHO guideline development; we also added the first-hand management data of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. This guideline includes the guideline methodology, epidemiological characteristics, disease screening and population prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control (including traditional Chinese Medicine), nosocomial infection prevention and control, and disease nursing of the 2019-nCoV. Moreover, we also provide a whole process of a successful treatment case of the severe 2019-nCoV infected pneumonia and experience and lessons of hospital rescue for 2019-nCoV infections. This rapid advice guideline is suitable for the first frontline doctors and nurses, managers of hospitals and healthcare sections, community residents, public health persons, relevant researchers, and all person who are interested in the 2019-nCoV.

Background: Whether or not EGFR mutation status detected by ddPCR in plasma predicts the effect of icotinib on patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma was determined. Methods: Plasma and matched tissue specimens from patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma were collected prior to icotinib treatment. The ARMS method was used to detect EGFR mutation status in DNA extracted from tissue specimens, while the EGFR mutation status in ctDNA extracted from plasma specimens was determined by ddPCR. The therapeutic effects of icotinib were compared between patients with EGFR - activating mutations detected by ddPCR in ctDNA and ARMS in tissue DNA. Results: EGFR mutation status was detected in 96 tissue and 100 plasma specimens. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of 19del detected in ctDNA by ddPCR was 70.97% (22/31) and 44.90% (22/49), respectively. The positive predictive value was 84.62% (22/26) and the sensitivity was 53.66% (22/41) for the L858R mutation. For the common sensitive EGFR mutations, ddPCR had a positive predictive value of 77.19% (44/57) and a sensitivity of 48.89% (44/90). Patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in ctDNA had objective response and disease control rates (DCR) similar to patients who had sensitive EGFR mutations in tissues detected by ARMS when treated with icotinib (57.14% vs . 51.51% and 92.86% vs . 90.91%, respectively). Conclusions: Patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in plasma specimens detected with ddPCR had a higher ORR and DCR compared with patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in tissue detected with the ARMS method.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials may play an important role in future photodetectors due to their natural atom-thin body thickness, unique quantum confinement, and excellent electronic and photoelectric properties. Semimetallic graphene, semiconductor black phosphorus, and transition metal dichalcogenides possess flexible and adjustable bandgaps, which correspond to a wide interaction spectrum ranging from ultraviolet to terahertz. Nevertheless, their absorbance is relatively low, and it is difficult for a single material to cover a wide spectrum. Therefore, the combination of phototransistors based on 2D hybrid structures with other material platforms, such as quantum dots, organic materials, or plasma nanostructures, exhibit ultra-sensitive and broadband optical detection capabilities that cannot be ascribed to the individual constituents of the assembly. This article provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the recent research progress of 2D material photodetectors. First, the fundamental detection mechanism and key metrics of the 2D material photodetectors are introduced. Then, the latest developments in 2D material photodetectors are reviewed based on the strategies of photocurrent enhancement. Finally, a design and implementation principle for high-performance 2D material photodetectors is provided, together with the current challenges and future outlooks.

Background This study summarizes the experiences of patients, who have multiple comorbidities, with 15 mono-treated antidepressants. Methods This is a retrospective, observational, matched case control study. The cohort was organized using claims data available through OptumLabs for depressed patients treated with antidepressants between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2018. The cohort included patients from all states within United States of America. The analysis focused on 3,678,082 patients with major depression who had 10,221,145 antidepressant treatments. Using the robust, and large predictors of remission, and propensity to prescribe an antidepressant, the study created 16,770 subgroups of patients. The study reports the remission rate for the antidepressants within the subgroups. The overall impact of antidepressant on remission was calculated as the common odds ratio across the strata. Findings The study accurately modelled clinicians’ prescription patterns (cross-validated Area under the Receiver Operating Curve, AROC, of 82.0%, varied from 77% to 90%) and patients’ remission (cross-validated AROC of 72.0%, varied from 69.5% to 78%). In different strata, contrary to published randomized studies, remission rates differed significantly and antidepressants were not equally effective. For example, in age and gender subgroups, the best antidepressant had an average remission rate of 50.78%, 1.5 times higher than the average antidepressant (30.30% remission rate) and 20 times higher than the worst antidepressant. With the deep integration of software collaborative development and social networking, social coding represents a new style of software production and creation paradigm. Because of their good flexibility and openness, a large number of external contributors have been attracted to the open-source communities. They are playing a significant role in open-source development. However, the open-source development online is a globalized and distributed cooperative work. If left unsupervised, the contribution process may result in inefficiency. It takes contributors a lot of time to find suitable projects or tasks from thousands of open-source projects in the communities to work on. In this paper, we propose a new approach called “RepoLike,” to recommend repositories for developers based on linear combination and learning to rank. It uses the project popularity, technical dependencies among projects, and social connections among developers to measure the correlations between a developer and the given projects. Experimental results show that our approach can achieve over 25% of hit ratio when recommending 20 candidates, meaning that it can recommend closely correlated repositories to social developers.

Aim: To investigate prognostic value of preoperative inflammatory biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients & methods: Preoperative circulating fibrinogen, prealbumin, fibrinogen to prealbumin ratio (FPR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte to monocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio were detected and calculated in 230 HCC patients. X-tile software, Kaplan–Meier curve, Cox regression, time-dependent receiver-operating characteristic were used to explored prognostic roles of them in HCC. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have been shown to promote stroke recovery, however, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. In this study naive rats were intravenously injected with syngeneic BMSCs to screen for potential differences in brain metabolite spectrum versus vehicle-treated controls by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry. A total of 65 metabolites were significantly changed after BMSC treatment. Among them, 5-oxoproline, an intermediate in the biosynthesis of the endogenous glutathione (GSH), was increased. To confirm the obtained results and investigate the metabolic pathways, BMSCs were injected into rats 24 h after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Rats receiving vehicle solution and sham-operated animals served as controls. High performance liquid chromatography, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and Western blotting revealed that intravenous BMSC application increased the levels of 5-oxoproline and GSH in MCAO rats, as well as the expression of key enzymes involved in GSH synthesis including, gamma-glutamylcyclotransferase and gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase. Subsequent clinical investigation confirmed that acute ischemic stroke patients had higher plasma 5-oxoproline and GSH levels than age- and sex-matched non-stroke controls. The optimal cutoff value for 5-oxoproline diagnosing acute ischemic stroke (≤ 7d) was 3.127 µg/mL (sensitivity, 63.4 %; specificity, 81.2 %) determined by receiver characteristic operator curve. The area under the curve was 0.782 (95 % confidence interval: 0.718-0.845). Our findings indicate that BMSCs play a protective role in ischemic stroke through upregulation of GSH and 5-oxoproline is a potential biomarker for acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke causes oxidative stress and induction of endogenous, glutathione-dependent anti-oxidative mechanisms. 5-oxoproline, an important metabolite in glutathione biosynthesis, could serve as a biomarker of acute ischemic stroke. Moreover, intravenous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) treatment after experimental stroke upregulates the expression of key enzymes involved in glutathione synthesis, which results in better antioxidative defense and improved stroke outcome.

Background In real-world pragmatic administrative databases, patient reported remission is often missing. Objective We evaluate if, in administrative data, five features of antidepressant use patterns can replace patient-reported symptom remission. Method We re-examined data from Sequence Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study. Remission was measured using 50% reduction in Hamilton index. Pattern of antidepressant use was examined through five variables: (a) number of prior ineffective antidepressants, (b) duration of taking current antidepressant, (c) receiving therapeutic dose of the medication, and (d) switching to another medication, or (e) augmenting with another antidepressant. The likelihood ratio (LR) associated with each of these predictors was assessed in 90% of data (3329 cases) and evaluated in 10% of data (350 cases) set-aside for evaluation. The accuracy of predictions was calculated using Area under the Receiver Operating Curve (AROC). Results Patients who took antidepressants for 14 weeks (LR = 2.007) were more likely to have symptom remission. Prior use of 3 antidepressants reduced the odds of remission (LR = 0.771). Patients who received antidepressants below therapeutic dose were 5 times less likely to experience remission (LR = 0.204). Antidepressant that were augment or switched, almost never led to remission (LR = 0.008, LR = 0.002 respectively). Patterns of antidepressant use accurately (AROC = 0.93) predicted symptom remission. Conclusion Within the first 100 days, antidepressants use patterns could serve as a surrogate measure for patient-reported remission of symptoms.

Objective: Based on the integrated pharmacology platform of Chinese medicine V2.0 (TCMIP V2.0), this paper explores the molecular mechanism and quality markers of Tanyu Tongzhi Recipe against myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (MIRI). Methods: Use TCMIP V2.0 to collect the drug components, targets, and MIRI disease targets of the recipe for phlegm and blood stasis, construct a drug-disease-target interaction network, screen drugs and disease common targets, analyze the biological process of the common targets, and finally establish a “component-target-pathway-pharmacological action” multi-dimensional network analysis and analysis of the core components in the network. Results: A total of 157 medicinal chemical components, such as Pinellia, Red Peony, Chuanxiong, Licorice, etc. were collected from the prescription of phlegm and blood stasis, with 272 corresponding targets. A total of 290 MIRI disease targets were collected. Through "Traditional Chinese Medicine Association Network Mining," the first 100 targets in the core targets were analyzed and 31 targets shared by drugs and diseases. Analysis of these shared targets revealed that the shared targets are mainly involved in the positive regulation of tube formation, angiogenesis, positive regulation of autophagy, inflammation, and negative regulation of apoptosis. KEGG enrichment analysis shows that these common targets are mainly enriched in the FoxO signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, VEGF signaling pathways and other signal pathways. Further analysis of the multi-dimensional network revealed that 46 components of Tanyu Tongzhi Prescription affect the above five signal pathways to exert anti-MIRI effects by interacting with 19 shared targets. Among them, quercetin, kaempferol, naringenin, and baicalein are intervened. AKT affects five signal pathways involved in the occurrence and development of MIRI. Conclusion: Quercetin, kaempferol, naringenin, and baicalein in Tanyu Tongzhi Recipe can resist MIRI by regulating inflammation, autophagy and apoptosis, oxidative stress, angiogenesis, and other processes.

Objective: To analyze medication rule of the treatment for spring warm disease in case records of Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) based on data mining. Methods: Ancient case records of warm disease were selected as the data source and the standard principle of data extraction was established. TCM Miner was used for collecting data and analyzing association rules. Results: A total of 225 case records of spring warm disease are recorded in 20 ancient medical classics, including 37 formulas and 219 Chinese medicines. The main formulas include Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Fumai Tang (Pulse-Restorative Decoction) and Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder), which fall into the category of heat-clearing formula, tonifying formula and phlegm-expelling formula respectively. The main Chinese medicines include Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Fuling (Poria) and Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), which are capable of relieving cough and panting and resolving phlegm, promoting urination and eliminating dampness, as well as tonifying. The properties are mainly warm, cold and neutral; the flavors are mainly sweet, bitter and acrid; and the medicines mainly enter meridians of the lung, stomach and liver respectively. The frequently-used medicinal combinations include Xingren ((Armeniacae Amarum)) -Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae), Jupi (Citri Exocarpium)-Xingren, Lianqiao-Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae) -Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), and Lianqiao-Xuanshen-Shichangpu. Conclusion: The formulas and medications in the treatment of spring warm disease in ancient case records focus on clearing heat that is assisted by eliminating exterior pathogen and protecting yin fluid.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as MoS 2 are promising material candidates for next-generation energy-efficient nanoelectronics. For the first time, a 2D steep-slope field-effect transistor (FET) based on novel Dirac-source electron injection (DSEI) was demonstrated where monolayer graphene (Gr) source injects cold electrons to monolayer MoS 2 channel. As an innovative steep transistor concept, this atomic-thin 2D DSEI-FET shows the minimum subthreshold swing (SS) of 29 mV/decade and, more importantly, a record-high sub-60-mV/decade current density (over 1 μA/μm) compared to any state-of-the-art 2D or three-dimensional (3D) tunneling FETs (TFETs) or negative capacitance FETs (NCFETs).

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) decouples network functions from the dedicated hardware and produces Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in software. The VNFs are placed on hardware and are linked together to build a service chain. The design of an efficient VNF placement algorithm is crucial. The rapid development of machine learning, especially Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL), allows us to address this problem. In this paper, we present an attention based sequence to sequence Deep RL method for VNF placement. Our approach is a policy based method optimized by REINFORCE with baseline. Our model receives physical hosts and service chain as input and produces the output sequence step by step with attention encoder and decoder. We demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing learning method and greedy heuristic.

BackgroundOntologies house various kinds of domain knowledge in formal structures, primarily in the form of concepts and the associative relationships between them. Ontologies have become integral components of many health information processing environments. Hence, quality assurance of the conceptual content of any ontology is critical. Relationships are foundational to the definition of concepts.Missing relationship errors(i.e., unintended omissions of important definitional relationships) can have a deleterious effect on the quality of an ontology. An abstraction network is a structure that overlays an ontology and provides an alternate, summarization view of its contents. One kind of abstraction network is called anarea taxonomy, and a variation of it is called asubtaxonomy. A methodology based on these taxonomies for more readily finding missing relationship errors is explored.MethodsThearea taxonomyand thesubtaxonomyare deployed to help reveal concepts that have a high likelihood of exhibiting missing relationship errors. A specific top-level grouping unit found within the area taxonomy and subtaxonomy, when deemed to be anomalous, is used as an indicator that missing relationship errors are likely to be found among certain concepts. Two hypotheses pertaining to the effectiveness of our Quality Assurance approach are studied.ResultsOur Quality Assurance methodology was applied to theBiological Processhierarchy of the National Cancer Institute thesaurus (NCIt) and SNOMED CT’sEye/vision findingsubhierarchy within itsClinical findinghierarchy. Many missing relationship errors were discovered and confirmed in our analysis. For both test-bed hierarchies, our Quality Assurance methodology yielded a statistically significantly higher number of concepts with missing relationship errors in comparison to a control sample of concepts. Two hypotheses are confirmed by these findings.ConclusionsQuality assurance is a critical part of an ontology’s lifecycle, and automated or semi-automated tools for supporting this process are invaluable. We introduced a Quality Assurance methodology targeted at missing relationship errors. Its successful application to the NCIt’sBiological Processhierarchy and SNOMED CT’sEye/vision findingsubhierarchy indicates that it can be a useful addition to the arsenal of tools available to ontology maintenance personnel.

Room-temperature plasma treated graphene based FET was firstly proposed for the DNA hybridization detection. Affinity and electrical properties of the graphene based DNA-FET sensor were studied and improved benefits from the surface modification. The facile room-temperature Ar plasma easily removes residues from the graphene surface and changes the hydrophilic properties of graphene, which is important for our solution gated DNA-FET sensor. Limit of the detection of below 10 aM is obtained in our experiment. Especially, DNA concentration (CDNA)/the amount of net drain current (ΔI) and the negative shift in the VCNP value of the GFET sensor with the plasma treated 30 s are all improved compared with that without treatment. It shows that the easily plasma treatment of the graphene surface can be used for the solution gated FET sensor.

Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) is one application scenario of 5G system to provide cellular Internet of Things (IoT) service. Some work is needed to provide efficient IoT service to meet the requirement of low power consumption and coverage extension, since IoT devices are mainly battery powered and installed in a coverage hole. Especially, the power consumption and radio resources are very essential when data packets are repeatedly transmitted to compensate the coverage gap. Considering the available energy in a real system is restricted, this paper proposes a distributed energy-restricted cluster based transmission scheme for mMTC/IoT data transmission, according to the geo-locations of IoT devices to optimize the transmission efficiency. The simulation results show that the proposed transmission scheme with a cluster size limitation can reduce the power consumption at IoT devices and improve the radio resource efficiency of the system, compared with the conventional centralized scheduling algorithm.

High contact resistance is one of the primary concerns for electronic device applications of two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors. Here, we explore the enhanced carrier transport through metal-semiconductor interfaces in WS2 field effect transistors (FETs) by introducing a typical transition metal, Cu, with two different doping strategies: (i) a "generalized" Cu doping by using randomly distributed Cu atoms along the channel and (ii) a "localized" Cu doping by adapting an ultrathin Cu layer at the metal-semiconductor interface. Compared to the pristine WS2 FETs, both the generalized Cu atomic dopant and localized Cu contact decoration can provide a Schottky-to-Ohmic contact transition owing to the reduced contact resistances by 1 - 3 orders of magnitude, and consequently elevate electron mobilities by 5 - 7 times higher. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising material candidates for next-generation nanoelectronics. However, there are fundamental challenges related to their metal-semiconductor (MS) contacts which limit the performance potential for practical device applications. In this work, we exploit 2D monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as an ultrathin decorating layer to form a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) contact, and demonstrate a novel diode-like selective enhancement of the carrier transport through it. Compared to the conventional MS contact, the MIS contact dominated by both thermionic emission and quantum tunneling can significantly reduce the contact resistance and boost the electron transport from the semiconductor to the metal, but has negligible effects on the electron transport oppositely. Background Chronic inflammation is deemed to play a significant effect on initiation and progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In current study, we investigated the prognostic and predictive role of albumin (Alb) to fibrinogen (Fib) ratio (AFR) and a novel AFR–Alb-derived neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) score (ADS) in ESCC patients undergoing esophagectomy and compared them with Fib, Alb, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), dNLR, platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR). Materials and methods A total of 153 clinical confirmed ESCC patients undergoing esophagectomy between January 2011 and December 2013 were included in present study. We detected preoperative Alb, Fib and neutrophil, monocyte, lymphocyte and platelet count, and obtained overall survival (OS) by 3 years’ follow-up in the cases. X-tile software, Kaplan–Meier curve, Cox regression and predicted nomogram were used to evaluate the predictive and prognostic role of them in ESCC patients. Results The optimal cut-off values of Fib, Alb, AFR, NLR, dNLR, PLR and LMR were 3.2 mg/dL, 38.2 g/L, 9.3, 2.1, 4.3, 145.9 and 2.3, respectively. High levels of Fib [(adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 2.148, 95% confidential interval (CI) (1.229–3.753)], dNLR (adjusted HR = 2.338, 95% CI 1.626–5.308) and PLR (adjusted HR = 1.964, 95% CI 1.129–3.415) as well as low AFR (adjusted HR = 2.381, 95% CI 1.152–4.926) and Alb (adjusted HR = 2.398, 95% CI 1.342–4.273) were significantly associated with decreased OS in ESCC patients. The survival predictive areas under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristics curve of AFR, dNLR and Alb were higher than Fib and PLR, respectively. High ADS score was significantly associated with short 3 years’ OS of ESCC patients (adjusted HR = 2.94, 95% CI 1.70–5.08). Moreover, OS of ESCC patients receiving adjuvant radio-chemotherapy was longer than those without the treatment in high ADS score subgroup (p = 0.001), however, no significant survival difference was observed in the patients with or without treatment radio-chemotherapy (p = 0.297). BACKGROUND The albumin to fibrinogen ratio (AFR) and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) have emerged as useful biomarkers to predict systemic inflammation. The aim here is to investigate the relation between AFR/CAR and Disease Activity Score of 28 joints (DAS 28) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS This retrospective study included 160 patients with RA and 159 healthy controls. We divided the RA patients into two groups according to the DAS 28-ESR score. Group 1 included 40 patients with a score of lower than 2.6 (patients in remission) and Group 2 included 120 patients with a score of 2.6 or higher (patients with active disease). Making full use of sunflower seeds, including oil and the polysaccharides extracted from the meals which oil has been extracted, is one way to enhance their industrial value. Such meals contain abundant polysaccharides; however, the application of polysaccharides isolated from sunflower remaining meals after oil extraction has not been investigated. In this study, polysaccharides were isolated by alkali from sunflower meals after different oil extraction processes, and their structural properties and antioxidant activities were compared. The results indicated that these polysaccharides displayed significant variability in monosaccharide composition and molecular weight. Differences in structural properties could result in differences in functional antioxidant properties. The polysaccharide (SPHE-1) obtained from the meals after traditional hexane extraction exhibited the best antioxidant activities, including DPPH free radical-scavenging assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity among all the polysaccharide fractions. The research provides valuable information for making efficient use of sunflower seeds in the food industry.

Background Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) were previously identified in human breast tissue and have been associated with breast cancer in independent studies. The objective of the current study was to test for the presence of BLV and HPV in the same breast tissue specimens to determine whether the viruses were associated with breast cancer either singly or together. Methods Archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded breast tissue sections from 216 women were received from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center along with patient diagnosis. In situ polymerase chain reaction and/or DNA hybridization methods were used to detect targeted DNA segments of BLV and HPV. Standard statistical methods were used to calculate age-adjusted odds ratios, attributable risk, and P values for the trend related to the association between presence of a virus and a diagnosis of breast disease. Results Women diagnosed with breast cancer were significantly more likely to have BLV DNA in their breast tissue compared with women with benign diagnoses and no history of breast cancer. Women with breast pathology classified as premalignant and no history of breast cancer also were found to have an elevated risk of harboring BLV DNA in their breast tissue. HPV status was not associated with malignancy, premalignant breast disease, or the presence of BLV in the breast tissues. Conclusions The data from the current study supported previous findings of a significant association between BLV DNA in breast tissue and a diagnosis of breast cancer, but did not demonstrate oncogenic strains of HPV associated with breast cancer or the presence of BLV DNA in breast tissue. The authors believe the findings of the current study contribute to overall knowledge regarding a possible causal role for viruses in human breast cancer. Multiple-layer InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) laser structures were etched to remove the p-side AlGaAs cladding layers to investigate the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. Four QD samples, including undoped as grown QDs, p-doped as grown QDs, undoped annealed QDs, and p-doped annealed QDs, were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and a postgrowth annealing process for comparison. Among them, modulation p-doped QD samples exhibit much less temperature-dependent characteristics of PL spectra and notable insensitivity to intermixing compared to undoped ones. This is attributed to the effects of modulation p-doping, which can inhibit holes’ thermal broadening in their closely spaced energy levels and significantly suppress In/Ga interdiffusion between QDs and their surrounding matrix. A back-gated multilayer nanoribbon molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) transistor grown by chemical vapor transport and doped using polyethylene oxide cesium perchlorate is fabricated and characterized. Ions in the polymer dielectric are directed by side gates to the source and drain access regions where they form electric double layers (EDLs) that control the carrier densities. This allows the junctions of the same transistor channel to be reconfigured as an n-MOSFET, p-MOSFET, and as a tunnel field-effect transistors. The EDLs are formed at room temperature and then locked into place by cooling the polymer below the glass transition temperature (~240 K). Transport measurements are presented and explained using simulated band diagrams. Both n and p-conduction in MoS2 is demonstrated using solid polymer ion doping, enabling characterization of a semiconductor in which the doping of the same channel has been reconfigured to form three different transistor configurations.

Viruses have been implicated in cancer development in both humans and animals. The role of viruses in cancer is typically to initiate cellular transformation through cellular DNA damage, although specific mechanisms remain unknown. Silent and long-term viral infections need to be present, in order to initiate cancer disease. In efforts to establish a causative role of viruses, first is needed to demonstrate the strength and consistency of associations in different populations. The aim of this study was to determine the association of bovine leukemia virus (BLV), a causative agent of leukemia in cattle, with breast cancer and its biomarkers used as prognosis of the severity of the disease (Ki67, HER2, hormonal receptors) in Colombian women. An unmatched, observational case–control study was conducted among women undergoing breast surgery between 2016–2018. Malignant samples (n = 75) were considered as cases and benign samples (n = 83) as controls. Nested-liquid PCR, in-situ PCR and immunohistochemistry were used for viral detection in blood and breast tissues. For the risk assessment, only BLV positive samples from breast tissues were included in the analysis. BLV was higher in cases group (61.3%) compared with controls (48.2%), with a statistically significant association between the virus and breast cancer in the unconditional logistic regression (adjusted-OR = 2.450,95%CI:1.088–5.517, p = 0.031). In this study, BLV was found in both blood and breast tissues of participants and an association between breast cancer and the virus was confirmed in Colombia, as an intermediate risk factor. Los virus se han implicado en el desarrollo del cáncer tanto en humanos como en animales. El papel de los virus en el cáncer suele ser iniciar la transformación celular a través del daño del ADN celular, aunque se desconocen los mecanismos específicos. Las infecciones virales silenciosas ya largo plazo deben estar presentes para iniciar la enfermedad del cáncer. En los esfuerzos por establecer un papel causal de los virus, primero se necesita demostrar la fuerza y ​​consistencia de las asociaciones en diferentes poblaciones. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la asociación del virus de la leucemia bovina (BLV), agente causal de la leucemia en bovinos, con el cáncer de mama y sus biomarcadores utilizados como pronóstico de la gravedad de la enfermedad (Ki67, HER2, receptores hormonales) en mujeres colombianas. Se realizó un estudio observacional de casos y controles sin igual entre mujeres que se sometieron a cirugía de mama entre 2016 y 2018. Las muestras malignas (n = 75) se consideraron casos y las muestras benignas (n = 83) como controles. Se utilizaron PCR líquida anidada, PCR in situ e inmunohistoquímica para la detección viral en sangre y tejidos mamarios. Para la evaluación de riesgos, solo se incluyeron en el análisis muestras positivas para BLV de tejidos mamarios. El BLV fue mayor en el grupo de casos (61,3 %) en comparación con los controles (48,2 %), con una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre el virus y el cáncer de mama en la regresión logística incondicional (OR ajustado = 2,450, IC del 95 %: 1,088–5,517, p = 0,031). En este estudio, se encontró BLV tanto en la sangre como en los tejidos mamarios de las participantes y se confirmó una asociación entre el cáncer de mama y el virus en Colombia, como un factor de riesgo intermedio.

Diverse diode characteristics were observed in two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) heterojunctions. The characteristics of a backward rectifying diode, a Zener diode, and a forward rectifying diode were obtained from the heterojunction through thickness modulation of the BP flake or back gate modulation. Moreover, a tunnel diode with a precursor to negative differential resistance can be realized by applying dual gating with a solid polymer electrolyte layer as a top gate dielectric material. Interestingly, a steep subthreshold swing of 55 mV/dec was achieved in a top-gated 2D BP–MoS2 junction. Our simple device architecture and chemical doping-free processing guaranteed the device quality. This work helps us understand the fundamentals of tunneling in 2D semiconductor heterostructures and shows great potential in future applications in integrated low-power circuits.

Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a major contributor to the development of heart failure. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie this process remain elusive. Inadequate angiogenesis in the myocardium leads to a transition from cardiac hypertrophy to dysfunction, and our previous study showed that Ang II significantly impaired the angiogenesis response. The current study was designed to examine the role of Jagged1-Notch signaling in the effect of Ang II during impaired angiogenesis and cardiac hypertrophy. Methods: Ang II was subcutaneously infused into 8-week-old male C57BL/6 mice at a dose of 200 ng·kg−1·min−1 for 2 weeks using Alzet micro-osmotic pumps. N-[N-(3, 5-difluorophenacetyl)-L-alanyl]-S-phenylglycine tert-butyl ester (DAPT), a γ-secretase inhibitor, was injected subcutaneously during Ang II infusion at a dose of 10.0 mg·kg−1·d−1. Forty mice were divided into four groups (n = 10 per group): control group; Ang II group, treated with Ang II; DAPT group, treated with DAPT; and Ang II + DAPT group, treated with both Ang II and DAPT. At the end of experiments, myocardial (left ventricle [LV]) tissue from each experimental group was evaluated using immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance test followed by the least significant difference method or independent samples t-test. Results: Ang II treatment significantly induced cardiac hypertrophy and impaired the angiogenesis response compared to controls, as shown by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and immunohistochemistry for CD31, a vascular marker (P < 0.05 for both). Meanwhile, Jagged1 protein was significantly increased, but gene expression for both Jag1 and Hey1 was decreased in the LV following Ang II treatment, compared to that in controls (relative ratio for Jag1 gene: 0.45 ± 0.13 vs. 0.84 ± 0.15; relative ratio for Hey1 gene: 0.51 ± 0.08 vs. 0.91 ± 0.09; P < 0.05). All these cellular and molecular effects induced by Ang II in the hearts of mice were reduced by DAPT treatment. Interestingly, Ang II stimulated Hey1, a known Notch target, but did not affect the expression of Hey2, another Notch target gene. Conclusions: A Jagged1-Hey1 signal might mediate the impairment of angiogenesis induced by Ang II during cardiac hypertrophy.

Previous studies have investigated the association between tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) -308G/A polymorphism and risk of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), but the reported results have been inconsistent. Thus, a systematic meta-analysis was performed to resolve this discrepancy.Electronic databases and the cited references of the obtained published articles were manually searched. Quality assessment of each study was conducted using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). All case-control studies were used to assess the strength of the association. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata version 12.0.Eight high-quality studies, including 947 patients and 1911 controls, were selected for the final meta-analysis. There was no significant association between TNF-α -308G/A polymorphism and ITP in overall and Asian populations. However, a significant positive association was observed between them in the dominant genetic model (AA+AG versus GG) in the Caucasian population (OR = 1.35, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.71, POur finding suggested that TNF-α -308G/A might be involved in development of ITP in the Caucasian population, but not in the Asian population. Among Caucasians the A allele (AA+AG) was associated with ITP. However, larger-scale studies are required to confirm our findings.

SummaryObjectives: Ontologies are knowledge structures that lend support to many health-information systems. A study is carried out to assess the quality of ontological concepts based on a measure of their complexity. The results show a relation between complexity of concepts and error rates of concepts.Methods: A measure of lateral complexity defined as the number of exhibited role types is used to distinguish between more complex and simpler concepts. Using a framework called an area taxonomy, a kind of abstraction network that summarizes the structural organization of an ontology, concepts are divided into two groups along these lines. Various concepts from each group are then subjected to a two-phase QA analysis to uncover and verify errors and inconsistencies in their modeling. A hierarchy of the National Cancer Institute thesaurus (NCIt) is used as our test- bed. A hypothesis pertaining to the expected error rates of the complex and simple concepts is tested.Results: Our study was done on the NCIt’s Biological Process hierarchy. Various errors, including missing roles, incorrect role targets, and incorrectly assigned roles, were discovered and verified in the two phases of our QA analysis. The overall findings confirmed our hypothesis by showing a statistically significant difference between the amounts of errors exhibited by more laterally complex concepts vis-à-vis simpler concepts.Conclusions: QA is an essential part of any ontology’s maintenance regimen. In this paper, we reported on the results of a QA study targeting two groups of ontology concepts distinguished by their level of complexity, defined in terms of the number of exhibited role types. The study was carried out on a major component of an important ontology, the NCIt. The findings suggest that more complex concepts tend to have a higher error rate than simpler concepts. These findings can be utilized to guide ongoing efforts in ontology QA.

Accurate prediction of mortality for patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) is an important component of medical care. However, little is known about the role of multimorbidity in predicting end of life for high-risk and vulnerable patients.The aim of the study was to derive and validate a multimorbidity risk model in an attempt to predict all-cause mortality at 6 and 12 months posthospital discharge.This is a retrospective, observational, clinical cohort study. Data were collected on 442,692 ICU patients who received care through the Veterans Administration between January 2003 and December 2013. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 6 and 12 months posthospital discharge. We divided the data into derivation (80%) and validation (20%) sets. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we compared prognostic models based on age, principal diagnosis groups, physiological markers, immunosuppressants, comorbidity categories, and a newly developed multimorbidity index (MMI) based on 5695 comorbidities. The cross-validated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to report the accuracy of predicting all-cause mortality at 6 and 12 months of hospital discharge.The average age of patients was 68.87 years (standard deviation = 12.1), 95.9% were males, 44.9% were widowed, divorced, or separated. The relative order of accuracy in predicting mortality was the MMI (AUC = 0.84, CI = 0.83-0.84), VA Inpatient Evaluation Center index (AUC = 0.80, CI = 0.79-0.81), principal diagnosis groups (AUC = 0.74, CI = 0.73-0.74), comorbidities (AUC = 0.69, CI = 0.68-0.70), physiological markers (AUC = 0.65, CI = 0.64-0.65), age (AUC = 0.60, CI = 0.60-0.61),and immunosuppressant use (AUC = 0.59, CI = 0.58-0.59).The MMI improved the accuracy of predicting short- and long-term all-cause mortality for ICU patients. Further prospective studies are needed to validate the index in different clinical settings and test generalizability of results in patients outside the VA system of care.

As a crucial event involved in the metastasis and relapse of esophageal cancer, c-Met overexpression has been considered as one of the culprits responsible for the failure in patients who received radiochemotherapy. Since c-Met has been confirmed to be pivotal for cell survival, proliferation and migration, little is known about its impact on the regulation of radiosensitivity in esophageal cancer. The present study investigated the radiosensitization effects of c-Met inhibitor foretinib in ECA-109 and TE-13 cell lines. Foretinib inhibited c-Met signaling in a dose-dependent manner resulting in decreases in the cell viability of ECA-109 and TE-13. Pretreatment with foretinib synergistically prompted cell apoptosis and G2/M arrest induced by irradiation. Moreover, decreases ability of DNA damage repair was also observed. In vivo studies confirmed that the combinatorial use of foretinib with irradiation significantly diminishes tumor burden compared to either treatment alone. The present findings implied a crucial role of c-Met in the modulation of radiosensitization in esophageal cancer, and foretinib increased the radiosensitivity in ECA-109 and TE-13 cells mainly via c-Met signaling, highlighting a novel profile of foretinib as a potential radiosensitizer for the treatment of esophageal cancer.

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) based nanomaterials are considered as the most promising photoelectrodes for solar water splitting. However, some inherent shortcomings like high density of surface states is still the critically challengeable issue. This paper reports the integration of In2O3 nanolayers (NLs) on the surface of worm-like Fe2O3 films to significantly improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation activity. The In2O3 NLs on the modified α-Fe2O3 photoelectrodes exhibit dual positive effects on PEC performance: i) acting as the passivation material to decrease surface electron-hole recombination losses; ii) constructing heterojunctions with Fe2O3 to facilitate efficient separation of surface charges and spatial transfer with extended lifetimes. The resulting treated Fe2O3 photoanode yields a current density of 3.4 mA cm―2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode and high incident photon-to-current efficiency of 80 % at 400 nm. These results may bring inspiration to introduce multifunctional modifiers on photoelectrodes that offer practically high-performance PEC applications.

Objectives This study aims to reduce cesarean section rate and increase rate of vaginal delivery. Methods By using Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology, the cesarean section rate was investigated and analyzed through a 5-phase roadmap consisting of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. The principal causes of cesarean section were identified, improvement measures were implemented, and the rate of cesarean section before and after intervention was compared. Results After patients with a valid medical reason for cesarean were excluded, the main causes of cesarean section were maternal request, labor pain, parturient women assessment, and labor observation. A series of measures was implemented, including an improved parturient women assessment system, strengthened pregnancy nutrition guidance, implementation of painless labor techniques, enhanced midwifery team building, and promotion of childbirth-assist skills. Ten months after introduction of the improvement measures, the cesarean section rate decreased from 41.83% to 32.00%, and the Six Sigma score (ie, Z value) increased from 1.706 to 1.967 (P

Nano-hole patterned sapphire substrates (NHPSSs) were successfully prepared using a low-cost and high-efficiency approach, which is the laser interference lithography (LIL) combined with reactive ion etching (RIE) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques. Gallium nitride (GaN)-based light emitting diode (LED) structure was grown on NHPSS by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Photoluminescence (PL) measurement was conducted to compare the luminescence efficiency of the GaN-based LED structure grown on NHPSS (NHPSS-LED) and that on unpatterned sapphire substrates (UPSS-LED). Electroluminescence (EL) measurement shows that the output power of NHPSS-LED is 2.3 times as high as that of UPSS-LED with an injection current of 150 mA. Both PL and EL results imply that NHPSS has an advantage in improving the crystalline quality of GaN epilayer and light extraction efficiency of LEDs at the same time.

Introduction: Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) causes enzootic bovine leukemia, andis closely related to human T-lymphotropic virus type 1. It expresses microRNAs ofunknown function and codes Tax, the protein that mediates malignant transformation.BLV is capable of infecting B- and T-lymphocytes, endothelial cells, and mammaryepithelial cells of cattle. Several studies demonstrated the presence of BLV DNA inhuman tissue, and it is significantly associated with breast cancer in case-control studiesusing in situ PCR, a highly sensitive and specific technique. The current study was thefirst report of BLV DNA detection by in situ PCR in tissue from Argentinian femaleswith a diagnosis of breast cancer.Methods: In situ PCR was done to detect BLV DNA in 85 human FFPE breast cancertissue samples. The association of BLV DNA and expression of Ki67 and Her-2 wasassessed.Results: BLV DNA presence could be determined in 22.6% of the analyzed samples, andits presence was associated with an increase of the expression and prognosis markers Ki67(P=0.009) and HER-2 (P=0.044) determined by conventional immunohistochemistry.No statistical significance was observed between the presence or absence of hormonalreceptors and the presence of BLV DNA.Conclusions: The obtained results support the idea that BLV might play a role inmalignant tissue transformation. Metal-semiconductor (MS) contacts were changed from Schottky to Ohmic in synthesized tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), due to Cu doping during the synthesis. Significant reductions of contact barrier and resistance were achieved. A statistical study shows transistor performance including carrier mobilities, on/off ratios, on-current densities, and subthreshold swings were also improved significantly with Cu doping.

The immunological barrier currently precludes the clinical utilization of allogeneic stem cells. Although glial-restricted progenitors have become attractive candidates to treat a wide variety of neurological diseases, their survival in immunocompetent recipients is limited. In this study, we adopted a short-term, systemically applicable co-stimulation blockade-based strategy using CTLA4-Ig and anti-CD154 antibodies to modulate T-cell activation in the context of allogeneic glial-restricted progenitor transplantation. We found that co-stimulation blockade successfully prevented rejection of allogeneic glial-restricted progenitors from immunocompetent mouse brains. The long-term engrafted glial-restricted progenitors myelinated dysmyelinated adult mouse brains within one month. Furthermore, we identified a set of plasma miRNAs whose levels specifically correlated to the dynamic changes of immunoreactivity and as such could serve as biomarkers for graft rejection or tolerance. We put forward a successful strategy to induce alloantigen-specific hyporesponsiveness towards stem cells in the CNS, which will foster effective therapeutic application of allogeneic stem cells.

In this paper, a laterally coupled distributed feedback (LC-DFB) laser based on modulation p-doped multiple InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) structures has been fabricated. The device exhibits a high side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of > 47 dB and a high thermal stability of dλ/dT = 0.092 nm/K under continuous-wave (CW) operation, which is mainly attributed to the high material gain prepared by modulation p-doping and rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process, and the significantly reduced waveguide losses by shallow-etched gratings and its close proximity to the laser ridge feature in the LC-DFB laser. With this superior performance of the DFB laser, the wide tunable dual-wavelength lasing operation has been obtained by delicately defining different periods for the grating structures on the two sides of the laser ridge or combining the reduced laser cavity length. The wavelength spacing between the two lasing modes can be flexibly tuned in a very wide range from 0.5 to 73.4 nm, corresponding to the frequency difference from 0.10 to 14 THz, which is the largest tuning range by the utilization of single device and hence providing a new opportunity towards the generation of CW THz radiation.

Ontologies are popular way of representing knowledge and semantics of data in medical and health fields. Surprisingly, few machine learning methods allow for encoding semantics of data and even fewer allow for using ontologies to guide learning process. This paper discusses the use of data semantics and ontologies in health and medical applications of supervised learning, and particularly describes how the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is used within AQ21 rule learning software. Presented concepts are illustrated using two applications based on distinctly different types of data and methodological issues.

This paper investigates experimentally the effects of spacer geometry on temperature difference ratio downstream of pressure side split of trailing edge film cooling. The internal pin fins arrayed staggered and pin fins in the last row face to the cooling hole one by one. The geometric parameters include relative length of trailing edge l/b, ratio of length to span of split a/c, ratio of length to width a/b, angle of split α. And the effects of blowing ratio and Reynolds number are also researched specially. The correlation of temperature difference ratio vs. Reynolds number, blowing ratio, and geometric parameters respectively was induced.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of ultrasonic elastography (UE) and conventional ultrasonography (CUS) in the differential diagnosis of non-mass-like (NML) breast lesions. Static sonograms of 39 pathologically diagnosed NML breast lesions were reviewed. Lesions were evaluated by CUS and UE using CUS subjective ratings (benign, malignant or indeterminate), a 5-point subjective elasticity scoring system and the quantitative strain ratio (SR). Receiver operating characteristic curves and diagnostic tests were used to assess the diagnostic value of CUS and UE. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (Az) of the CUS, 5-point elasticity and SR methods were 0.848 (p < 0.001), 0.895 (p < 0.001) and 0.943 (p < 0.001), respectively. In diagnosing NML breast lesions, there was no significant difference between the 5-point elasticity and CUS methods. The combination of UE and CUS helps to improve the accuracy of the ultrasonic diagnosis of NML breast lesions.
