For the control of measurements as well as for taking over and pre-processing of the measurement data the NMR-spectrometer BS 487 C/TESLA has been connected on-line with an AMCA 80-microcomputer. This experimental equipment has been integrated in the local computer network ATLAS. For the data transmission and the computer coupling the CAMAC-system has been used. The storage and time intensive programmes for the spectra evaluations are-running in the EG-1040 computer. The data transfer is controlled by the help of a two-party, cooperative communication type protocol. The data acquisition and processing work in dialogue are running under real-time conditions.

The MEG (7 channel system) only was used to show alterations or missing of auditory evoked magnetic field responses caused by brain infarction in the auditory cortex (Leinonen and Joutsiniemi, 1989). And TIAs up to now only could be localized by the PET scan in a reliable way (Vyska et al. 1983). We wanted to find, if the AC-MEG is able to locate spontaneous pathological activity produced by ischemic lesions and especially by TIAs.

The career decisions of national samples of male and female unaccepted applicants to the 1971-72 entering U.S. medical school class are studied in order to determine whether the increasing number of unaccepted applicants is a potential manpower pool for alternative health occupations. The dominant response to rejection among respondents is reapplication to medical school in subsequent years, and the principal determinant of reapplication is receiving postrejection support (usually from family or friends) of the original career intentions. Most of the respondents who do not gain admittance to medical school on reapplications still aspire to doctoral-level degrees, but only half remain in the health area. Those respondents who had formulated contingency career plans in the professions and who had high science aptitude but low math aptitude tended to remain in the health area. A service orientation toward occupations is not associated with remaining in the health area.
