Owing to economics are usually linked with energy production, economic policy may have an instantaneous adjustment according to the current monetary, financial, cultural circumstances. This research thus investigates the dynamic co-movement as well as cointegration relationships between economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and disparate energy productions, i.e., Chinese coal, natural gas, crude oil, electricity as well as renewable energy, during the period from January 1995 to October 2019 in China. We compare the two EPU indices and make empirical and robust analysis to get more evidence for the time-varying co-movement between energy production and EPU. The empirical results show that there are stationary properties and cointegration relationships between energy production and EPU. By utilizing wavelet co-movement analysis in the time-frequency domain, our results show a significant positive co-movement among disparate energy productions and EPU at high frequencies, i.e., in the short term, but weaker co-movement at low frequencies, i.e., in the long term. Hence, the phase-difference series are mostly around the zero line, implying the variables behave to the dynamics of the co-movement with positive causality. Policy recommendations are offered in accordance with our finding.

The results show that there is bidirectional relationship between epidemics and electricity CO2 emissions, especially in OECD and Asian countries.

Using panel data consisting of 116 countries, this research investigates the effects of natural hazards on financial systems, including banking system, insurance system, and stock markets. Considering the moderating effects of financial risk, we introduce the interaction between natural hazards and financial risk and also analyze the heterogeneity of income level. Our main conclusions are as follows. (1) Though natural hazards do not significantly influence the banking system directly, they do impact the banking system through financial risk. The moderating effects of natural hazards on the banking system through financial risk are significantly negative. (2) The impacts of natural hazards on the insurance system are dynamic and last over a long period, while the moderating effects of natural hazards through financial risk are significantly negative. (3) The effects of natural hazards on the stock markets and the moderating effects through financial risk are significantly negative. (4) The negative effects of natural hazards on the financial system through financial risk are higher in low-income countries than those in high-income countries. From these results, we offer policy implications such as establishing a complete economic system and lowering the financial risk.

In a meta-analysis of three GWAS for susceptibility to Kawasaki disease (KD) conducted in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and follow-up studies with a total of 11,265 subjects (3428 cases and 7837 controls), a significantly associated SNV in the immunoglobulin heavy variable gene (IGHV) cluster in 14q33.32 was identified (rs4774175; OR = 1.20, P = 6.0 × 10−9). Investigation of nonsynonymous SNVs of the IGHV cluster in 9335 Japanese subjects identified the C allele of rs6423677, located in IGHV3-66, as the most significant reproducible association (OR = 1.25, P = 6.8 × 10−10 in 3603 cases and 5731 controls). We observed highly skewed allelic usage of IGHV3-66, wherein the rs6423677 A allele was nearly abolished in the transcripts in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of both KD patients and healthy adults. Association of the high-expression allele with KD strongly indicates some active roles of B-cells or endogenous immunoglobulins in the disease pathogenesis. Considering that significant association of SNVs in the IGHV region with disease susceptibility was previously known only for rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a complication of acute rheumatic fever (ARF), these observations suggest that common B-cell related mechanisms may mediate the symptomology of KD and ARF as well as RHD.

Machine learning is a well-known approach for virtual screening. Recently, deep learning, a machine learning algorithm in artificial neural networks, has been applied to the advancement of precision medicine and drug discovery. In this study, we performed comparative studies between deep neural networks (DNN) and other ligand-based virtual screening (LBVS) methods to demonstrate that DNN and random forest (RF) were superior in hit prediction efficiency. By using DNN, several triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) inhibitors were identified as potent hits from a screening of an in-house database of 165,000 compounds. In broadening the application of this method, we harnessed the predictive properties of trained model in the discovery of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) agonist, by which computational structure-based design of molecules could be greatly hindered by lack of structural information. Notably, a potent (~ 500 nM) mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist was identified as a hit from a small-size training set of 63 compounds. Our results show that DNN could be an efficient module in hit prediction and provide experimental evidence that machine learning could identify potent hits in silico from a limited training set.

Using an unbalanced panel data consisting of deaths from natural disasters and fivefactors of financial risks in 136 countries, this paper analyzes the effect of naturaldisasters on different financial risks. The conclusions are as follows: (1) naturaldisasters lead to financial crisis by reducing GDP and trade and increasing domesticand foreign debt; (2) the effects of natural disasters on financial risks are dynamic andlong term, with the effect weakening with time; and (3) the negative effects of naturaldisasters on financial risks in high-income and OECD countries are smaller than thoseof low-income and non-OECD countries.

This research analyzes the impact of government effectiveness on innovation by using unbalanced panel data from the World Bank on 166 countries spanning 1996 to 2018. We analyze the impact of government efficiency on innovation through various panel fixed-effects models, while incorporating control variables such as GDP, education, and industrial structure into the analysis framework. The empirical results conclude that, in our selected countries, government efficiency has a significantly positive impact on innovation output and more importantly verify the positive impact from the improvement of bureaucracy quality on innovation. The evidence again shows the positive impacts of government efficiency on innovation output by addressing endogenous and robustness checking via the series of methods. Furthermore, the heterogeneity and mechanism of this relationship would be explored. Therefore, the research results provide an alternative method for national governments to promote innovation output by improving government effectiveness.

Loss of the neuromonitoring signal (LOS) during thyroidectomy signifies recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, which is one of the common complications, especially by traction injury. Transient intraoperative LOS means spontaneous recovery of nerve function during surgery or within 6-month post-surgery. Few articles discuss intraoperative recovery time and transient LOS, and there is no consensus on the risk factors for RLN traction injury and its recovery course; thus, we wanted to determine the maximum intraoperative recovery time. This retrospective study included patients who had undergone thyroidectomies at Tainan National Cheng Kung University Hospital between January 2015 and August 2018. A total of 775 patients (with 1000 nerves at risk) who underwent intermittent intraoperative neuromonitoring during thyroidectomy were included in this study. The LOS nerves were divided into 4 groups based on the LOS subtype and the intraoperative status of the recovery. The postoperative vocal cord function was determined by thyroid ultrasound and/or laryngoscope. All the patients would be followed up postoperatively in 2–3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4–6 weeks. LOS occurred in 67 of 775 (8.6%) patients and in 70 of 1000 nerves at risk (7.0%). There were 2 in 70 nerves (2.9%) with LOS type 1 (segmental nerve traction injury) with intraoperative recovery (Group 1), 5 (7.1%) with LOS type 1 without intraoperative recovery (Group 2), 47 (67.1%) with LOS type 2 (global injury) with intraoperative recovery (Group 3), and 16 (22.8%) with LOS type 2 without intraoperative recovery (Group 4). This paper investigates the effect of globalization on innovation by using a combined dataset of 596809 Chinese manufacturing firms with 1,993,154 observations and provincial globalization indices from 1998 to 2009. The empirical findings suggest that overall provincial globalization is associated with better innovation performance for Chinese firms. More specifically, economic, social, and political globalization, present positive impacts on technological innovation. Interestingly, through subsample analysis the findings indicate that globalization expresses a distinct relationship with firms’ innovation performance. In particular, economic globalization correlates to greater technological innovation in private-owned enterprise, a lower one in stated-owned enterprises, and an insignificant one in foreign-owned enterprises. Moreover, a subsample analysis for different industries exhibits similar results as in the full sample except for the resources-intensive industry in which economic globalization is associated with lower innovation. Our findings indicate that China should continue to enhance connections in the economic, social, and political dimensions with other countries.

This paper investigates the long-run trends of shale gas and shale oil productions by applying univariate and panel Lagrange Multiplier (LM), GARCH-based, and PANICCA unit root tests to discover the mean-reverting behaviors. We employ monthly data from January 2007 to December 2016 of shale gas withdrawals and shale oil productions in the U.S. The empirical results both on specific state/oil well and panel data show that most structural breaks emerge around 2007–2011, during which shale energy was massively produced in the U.S. and the global financial crisis and energy shock occurred. Our results also indicate that most external shocks are transitory and the trends soon converge, and that cross-state/well factors have greater potential as temporary shocks than the state-specific/well-particular components. For robust analysis, we conduct additional LM tests of natural gas and crude oil productions for a comparison with the unconventional shale energy. The unit root test of Narayan and Popp (2010) on shale gas and shale oil productions help us to find more stationary evidence. Overall, we present powerful findings of the mean-reversion property and propose critical implications for authorities and market participants.

This study aims to investigate the moderating role of corruption on the effect of government R&D expenditure on enterprise innovation in China, using the annually data over the period 2002-2013 in a panel of 30 provinces. A dynamic panel system GMM model was used to explore the relationship among government R&D expenditure, corruption, and innovation. Our finding shows that though government R&D expenditure has no significant effects on patent applications, it does exhibit significantly positive effects on patents granted. However, when considering official corruption, the interaction term of government R&D expenditure and corruption has a statistically significantly positive effect on patent applications and patents granted, with corruption presenting significantly positive effects on the ratio of the number of patents granted to patent applications. It demonstrates that corruption is still a shortcut for overcoming red tapes and administrative intervention, especially in an economy in transition with lower institution quality and anti-corruption.

The spillover effects of European Union Allowances (EUA) spot and futures markets are important for investors in order to understand the relevance and risk management of product prices. This paper uses non-linear methods of Granger causality to test the mean spillover relationship between the two markets and then analyzes volatility spillovers between the two by the non-linear TVP-VAR spillover index. The results show that (1) the non-linear Granger causality test better reflects the mean spillover relationship between EUA spot and futures; (2) there is a bidirectional non-linear mean spillover effect between EUA spot and futures prices for the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) phases II and III; and (3) volatility spillovers, appearing in EUA spot and future markets in both phases, work increasingly strong over time and are vulnerable to financial crises and extreme events.

This study investigates the non-linear relationship between venture capital investment and technological innovation for 28 provinces in China, using the panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model for the period 2001-2014. Our results confirm that the relationship within the empirical model is indeed non-linear, and venture capital (VC) only presents a positive impact on innovation in China when investment is large enough over the threshold level. However, VC may severely hurt the innovative abilities of invested enterprises when the scale of investment is relatively small, especially in “western” and “lower-investment” provinces after dividing the sample provinces into different groups.

In recent years, a growing strand of China’s listed companies chose to disclose environmental information, which may potentially affect their financial performance then further influence its performance of financial supports. To quantitatively investigate the impact of enterprise’s environmental information disclosure on the ability of firms’ borrowing in China, this paper divides the measurements of information disclosure into five categories and evaluates firms’ performance in capital market through its availability of a loan and the cost of capital. In total, 97 listed energy-intensive companies in China are selected and their data covering the period of 2000–2014 are utilized for empirical study. The empirical results indicate that enterprise’s environmental information disclosure appears to have a significantly positive effect on the loan size available, while the cost of capital is less sensitive to environmental information disclosure. The empirical evidence also suggests that, among the five aspects of information disclosure measurements, the future plan and monetary information are the most influential factors of the cost of capital.

This study examines the effect of government ideology on carbon dioxide emissions along the entire length of the conditional distribution of the dependent variable (i.e., carbon dioxide emissions) using the instrumental variable quantile regression technique with fixed effects in a balanced panel of 65 countries over the period of 1981–2012. The estimation results indicate that government ideology is a significant determinant of carbon dioxide emissions only in the lower quantiles of the distribution. Specifically, the left-wing governments are associated with lower carbon dioxide emissions among the least polluted countries. Contrarily, the effect of government ideology on carbon dioxide emissions is statistically insignificant in the median and upper quantiles of the distribution, suggesting that government ideology does not have significant influences on carbon dioxide emissions among the median and most polluted nations. It was also found that the effects of government ideology on carbon dioxide emissions differ remarkably at different quantiles of the distribution in developed and developing countries.

Using daily data from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021, this research explores COVID-19 shocks on the stock market of 15 representative oil exploration and production enterprises from 7 countries. We measure the COVID-19 epidemic from two levels, government response stringency index and number of confirmed cases, and employ stock prices and stock market returns to reflect the stock market. Our research results confirm that both the government response stringency index and the number of confirmed cases have a significantly negative influence on stock prices. We further find that the negative reaction of the stock market to the government response stringency index is greater than that from confirmed cases. Finally, we conclude that the government response stringency index have a significantly positive effect on stock market returns of oil exploration and production enterprises. Similar findings arise from analyzing specific enterprises. Overall, our conclusions provide some useful information for the decision-making of oil exploration and production enterprises’ investors and policy makers.

Employing data of one belt one road (OBOR) countries from 2002 to 2013, this study compares the contagious corruption difference between geographic border and distance through the dynamic spatial econometric model. The empirical results not only confirm that corruption in OBOR countries exists under various contagious channels, but also indicate that border effects, serving as contagious channels for corruption, are better than distance effects. The empirical implication is that OBOR countries with a common border tend to possess contagious corruption due to the hosts’ demonstration effect and the convenience of transferring illegal assets. We advise that those OBOR countries should enhance the supervision of cash flow, look for any opportunity of kicking back a portion of the stolen money, and establish a specific task force on corruption.

We employ data of 6194 firm-year observations for 1058 listed companies in the period 2006–2013 to investigate the interaction between stock liquidity and enterprise innovation in China and confirm that an increase in stock liquidity raises the number of patents granted, R&D investment, and the innovation efficiency of state-owned enterprises, while it decreases innovation significantly in private firms. These findings are also supported by quasi-natural experiments under the split-share structure policy reform and the adjustment of the stamp duty rate using propensity score matching and difference-in-difference methods. We then identify two possible mechanisms through which liquidity increases innovation: the entry of long-term and strategic institutional investors and the gradual privatization of SOEs. Several policy implications are provided in accordance with our findings.

Background The GLA IVS4 + 919G > A which is linked to late-onset Fabry disease shows high frequency in Taiwan. Methods To determine whether IVS4 + 919G > A is a frequent cause of heart disease, we genotyped it in normal controls and other disease cohorts (type 2 diabetes, heart failure, ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease). Normal controls and diabetes patients carrying the variant were evaluated for their cardiac condition. Minigene constructs were used to study GLA splicing patterns in different cell lines. Results GLA IVS4 + 919A was found in 4/1634 males (0.245%) and 2/1634 females (0.123%) in normal controls and in 4/2133 males (0.188%) and 7/1816 females (0.385%) in the type 2 diabetes cohort. Of all the 17 IVS4 + 919A carriers in these two groups, only two males reported heart-related disease (myocardial infarction and hypertensive heart disease). Furthermore, in the heart disease cohort (n = 649), only one male carried the variant. Minigene constructs showed that the AGS (stomach) cell line showed a distinct GLA splicing pattern. Conclusion Most subjects carrying GLA IVS4 + 919A did not show abnormal cardiac phenotypes. The near-absence of GLA IVS4 + 919A in heart disease cohort suggested that this variant is not a frequent cause of overt heart diseases in Taiwan and that the genotype-phenotype correlation and natural course of the disease need further investigation. We also showed that the GLA IVS4 + 919G > A nucleotide change did influence alternative splicing in a tissue-specific manner. Along with the continuous development of the global economy, environmental deterioration has been widely recognized as a pressing issue nowadays, bringing environmental governance to the forefront of human survival. Asia, the largest continent in world in terms of both landmass size and population, has long been facing the exhaustive challenge of environmental pollution. We empirically prove that the level of environmental governance, proxied by government expenditure on environmental protection as a share of gross domestic product (GDP), exerts significant impacts on environmental conditions among Asian countries. For Asian countries, basically three main conclusions can be drawn that may be useful for improving the condition of environmental quality: (i) the authority should increase the share of government expenditure on environmental protection, since it contributes significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions and the promotion of energy efficiency; (ii) the government should make an effort to control the overheating economic growth, since excessive economic growth is detrimental to the environment, and increasing GDP per capita leads to increasing CO2 emissions, decreasing energy efficiency, and decreasing comprehensive environmental performance; and (iii) although foreign direct investment has no impact on CO2 emissions and the Environmental Performance Index, it exerts a significantly negative impact on energy intensity and thus promotes an effect on energy efficiency; therefore, we recommend that the government should implement relevant policies to attract more foreign investment.

This study investigates the relationship between natural gas price and production and analyzes whether the recent shale gas boom has changed the nexus between the two. We set up a framework to test the directions of causal links between natural gas price and two measures of natural gas production: (1) gross natural gas production (aggregate of conventional natural gas and shale gas productions) and (2) conventional natural gas production only. Based on monthly data of 16 states in the U.S. between January 2007 and December 2016, we find robust evidence of a reliable relationship between natural gas price and gross production, but no reliable cointegration between gas price and conventional natural gas production. Our results are robust when we account for potential structural breaks and cross-section dependence in the data. Our evidence denotes that the recent shale gas boom has changed the relationship between natural gas price and production in the U.S. Moreover, our study shows that the structure break in the U.S market highly correlates to shale gas and also provides some evidence on that while cross-state factors result in long-term mean reversion, state-specific factors lead to a permanent shock.

This study investigates the long-run co-movement between venture capital and technological innovation for 28 provinces (including autonomous regions) in China, using the panel cointegration and panel-based error correction model over the 2001–2012 period. Our results confirm that venture capital and innovation have long-run cointegrated relationships as well as bidirectional causality for the whole country. Analysis of sub-samples again discovers similar results in both the eastern and central regions, but not in the western region. The policy implication shows that China’s development of innovations should be based on more venture capital input and that the government should establish a long-run innovation policy to accelerate the development of venture capital. We also offer several constructive suggestions for governments in the western provinces.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for approximately 15% of all lung cancers, leading to ~30,000 deaths each year in the United States. SCLC patients often present with metastasis at time of diagnosis, excluding surgery as a treatment option. While patients show high response rate to standard chemotherapy such as cisplatin/etoposide, they soon develop drug resistance and disease progression. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed for SCLC. BPR6K609S0 is a novel Aurora kinase inhibitor which has been designed to inhibit the kinase activity of Aurora A, and induces proteasome-mediated degradation of MYC. The BPR6K609S0 active molecule provokes cell apoptosis and inhibits proliferation of several SCLC cell lines with IC50 < 100 nM. Oral administration of BPR6K609 induces >60 % tumor regression in a NCI-H446 xenograft mouse model. In addition, BPR6K609 further reduces tumor progression in NCI-H446 xenograft mice pre-treated with LY3295668, an Aurora A-selective inhibitor which is currently under clinical investigation. These results support the clinical potential of BRP6K609S0 for the treatment of SCLC. This paper investigates the long-run cointegration relationship between shale gas production and natural gas prices during the period from January 2007 to December 2016 for 16 states in the U.S., by utilizing the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) based univariate unit root test, the PANICCA panel unit root test, the cointegration tests of Gregory and Hansen (1996), Westerlund and Edgerton (2008) as well as Banerjee and Carrión-i-Silvestre (2015) tests with structural breaks. The empirical finding shows that the mean-reverting property exists in both variables, and most structural breaks emerge around 2007-2009 and 2011-2014, during the period when shale gas production sharply increased, the global financial crisis erupted, and external energy shocks emerged. We also find a strong cointegrated relationship, denoting a long-run equilibrium property appears among the variables. Overall, we demonstrate an interaction nexus between price and production variables and put forward some vital implications for authorities and gas market participants.

This research investigates the effect of the separation between firm ownership and control on the cost of debt, with attention to the moderating role of state ownership and bank competition. We make use of a sample of 1744 Chinese A-share firms for the years 2011–2017. We find that separation between ownership and control is positively associated with the cost of debt. This is consistent with the view that separation of control from ownership allows controlling shareholders to engage in tunneling and other behaviors that increase the risk of default. State ownership weakens this positive link because government debt guarantees mitigate the risk of default. Greater competition in the banking industry generally reduces the cost of debt for non-state enterprises while having no effect for state enterprises. At the same time, greater bank competition amplifies the positive effect of ownership and control separation on debt cost for non-state enterprises as banks must still cover the higher default risk. Finally, the global financial crisis raised the cost of debt for non-state enterprises but had no effect for state enterprises.

Political incentive is one of the most efficient methods to promote local officials to push for both economic growth and environmental progress in the context of China. Since previous scholars have never investigated the relationships between political turnover and environmental governance at the municipal level, in this work, we proxy pollution by SO2, COD, SOOT, and NHx and examine whether environmental performance affects the political turnover of the municipal party secretary by exploiting a panel conditional logit with a fixed-effect model for the period 2002-2013. The results indicate that environmental performance does not significantly impact the turnover of municipal party secretaries, offering evidence that an increase of SO2 is associated with the likelihood of promotion under the panel multinomial logit approach. However, a higher GDP growth rate plays the determinant factor affecting the promotion of China's municipal party secretaries. Specific policy recommendations are proposed in accordance with our empirical findings.

Waldmann (Q J Econ 107:1283–1302, 1992) established long ago that being improvements in health, medical personnel are the valued input factor of the health production function. Previous research, however, has generally ignored the importance of medical personnel in the health production function and has almost exclusively focused on health expenditure. Thus, the motivation behind this study is to identify the relationship between two health indicators, namely medical personnel, i.e., registered nurses and physicians, and average life expectancy in Taiwan. From the empirical results, we find that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between the two variables and that medical personnel play a crucial role in the medical care system. Finally, the forecast error variance in life expectancy is mainly explained by itself. Moreover, medical personnel have a positive initial impact on life expectancy, and similar innovations are discovered vice versa in the impulse response functions. Some policy implications can be obtained via our empirical results.

Amyloidosis cutis dyschromica (ACD) is a distinct form of primary cutaneous amyloidosis characterized by generalized hyperpigmentation mottled with small hypopigmented macules on the trunks and limbs. Affected families and sporadic case subjects have been reported predominantly in East and Southeast Asian ethnicities; however, the genetic cause has not been elucidated. We report here that the compound heterozygosity or homozygosity of GPNMB truncating alleles is the cause of autosomal-recessive ACD. Six nonsense or frameshift mutations were identified in nine individuals diagnosed with ACD. Immunofluorescence analysis of skin biopsies showed that GPNMB is expressed in all epidermal cells, with the highest staining observed in melanocytes. GPNMB staining is significantly reduced in the lesional skin of affected individuals. Hyperpigmented lesions exhibited significantly increased amounts of DNA/keratin-positive amyloid deposits in the papillary dermis and infiltrating macrophages compared with hypo- or depigmented macules. Depigmentation of the lesions was attributable to loss of melanocytes. Intracytoplasmic fibrillary aggregates were observed in keratinocytes scattered in the lesional epidermis. Thus, our analysis indicates that loss of GPNMB, which has been implicated in melanosome formation, autophagy, phagocytosis, tissue repair, and negative regulation of inflammation, underlies autosomal-recessive ACD and provides insights into the etiology of amyloidosis and pigment dyschromia.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is one the most aggressive tumors with poor survival rate. SCLC patients often present with metastasis at time of diagnosis, excluding surgery as a treatment option. While patients show high response rate to standard chemotherapy such as cisplatin/etoposide, they soon develop drug resistance and disease progression. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed for SCLC. Several characteristics of SCLC such as aggressiveness and drug resistance could attribute to the existence of a cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulation in SCLC. The SCLC cell line NCI-H446 has been shown to present high degree of stemness and express stem cell markers including CD133, OCT4, MYC and Nestin. Here we develop a pyrimidine-based small molecule BPR6K471 which potently inhibits Aurora kinase activities in enzymatic- and cell- based assays. BPR6K471 efficiently (IC50 = 66 nM) inhibits proliferation of NCI-H446, and reduces the expression of stem-cell markers. In addition, intravenous injection of BPR6K471 inhibits >90 % progression of NCI-H446 in a mouse xenograft model. These results suggest that targeting Aurora kinases may be a potential therapeutic strategy to combat the CSC subpopulation in SCLC. We examine the relationship between natural disasters, political risk and insurance market development in a panel of 39 countries over the period 1984–2009 using a dynamic panel two-step system generalised method of moments model. We provide evidence that the incidences of natural disasters and deaths caused by natural disasters lead to greater total insurance, as well as life insurance and non-life insurance consumption. We also find that countries with lower levels of political risk experience higher insurance consumption. The incidences of natural disasters and deaths attributable to natural disasters contribute to insurance market development under the tenure of a government with lower levels of political risk. We therefore emphasise that natural disasters, political risk and their interaction effects are important determinants of insurance market development.

This paper investigates the attitudes of political parties to international trade in 23 OECD countries in the period 1972–2004. Employing different datasets and various measures of trade openness, we examine how government ideology affects trade policy preferences and whether this relationship depends on international and domestic factors by employing the panel data techniques. Our main findings are that an increase in the leftist orientation of the government leads to more restrictive or less open trade policies, while right-oriented parties are likely to express more favor to trade openness. Secondly, international factors such as globalization in political and social dimension as well as financial openness, have a strong positive influence on a given party’s trade policy preferences. Thirdly, we offer clear evidence that a political party will change its partisan positions due to the influence of the domestic economic and institutional environment.

This paper examines the effect of government ideology, political factors and globalization on energy regulation in electricity and gas industries using the bias-corrected least square dummy variable model in a panel of 23 OECD countries over the period of 1975–2007. We find that left-wing governments promote regulation in gas and electricity sectors. Also, less politically fragmented institutions contribute to deregulation of gas and electricity industries. Long tenures of incumbent government have limited impact on regulation in electricity sector, while it is associated with an increase in regulation of gas sector. Further, we find that higher political constraints and more globalized countries lead to deregulation in electricity and gas sectors. We discover that economic and social integration are the forces that promote deregulation in the gas industry, whereas political integration advance deregulation in the electricity industry. We emphasize that political economy factors are important determinants of energy regulation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of zinc supplementation on radiation-induced mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and those with oral cancers (OC). A total of 100 patients with head and neck cancers engaged in a randomized double blind study. All participants were placed into two randomized groups (experimental and control). The experimental group received a standard dose of zinc supplements, and the control group was given a placebo. Subgroup analyses were performed between 40 NPC and 43 OC patients. It was found that patients with OC in the control group developed Grade 2 and Grade 3 mucositis sooner than those in the experimental group. However, the benefits were not found to extend to patients with NPC. The results indicated that zinc supplementation prescribed in conjunction with radiotherapy postponed the development of severe mucositis solely for patients with OC. The pretreatment oral mucosa condition and areca chewing habit might account for such discrepancy.

This research applies an innovative panel data stationarity testing procedure developed by Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. [Carrion-i-Silvestre, J.L., Barrio-Castro, T.D. and Lopez-Bazo, E., 2005. Breaking the panels: An application to the GDP per capita, Econometrics Journal 8, 159–175.], which has the advantage of recognizing multiple structural breaks and the presence of cross-section dependence in order to re-investigate the hypothesis that per capita carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions stochastically converge for 21 OECD countries from 1950 to 2002. Remarkably, the evidence clearly indicates that the panel dataset of relative per capita CO 2 emissions is stationary after the structural breaks and cross-sectional dependence are introduced into the model. These findings offer strong policy implications for governments, regardless of whether they are in “convergent group” or “divergent group” countries. We also find that the structural breaks in the 1960s and over the 1970–1982 period are associated with time periods of fossil fuel becoming the main source of productivity, higher oil prices, and the development of nuclear power.
