Abstract: This study evaluated the association between timing and indication for previous cesarean section (C-section) and its association with postpartum risks for adverse maternal outcomes, primarily postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). This retrospective case–control study examined women following term vaginal delivery in a university-affiliated medical center between 2008 and 2018. Postpartum complications were compared between women who had their first VBAC and a control group comprised of women who had vaginal delivery without prior C-section. Additional analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the timing of previous C-section and the severity of postpartum adverse outcomes. Of the women meeting the inclusion criteria (n = 2879), 1,455 had VBAC and 1,424 were in the control group. Overall, significant postpartum complications, primarily PPH, were observed in the VBAC group compared to controls. Women who underwent C-section during second-stage of labor experienced higher PPH rates and increased drop in hemoglobin levels compared to women who underwent C-section during the first stage of labor or an elective C-Sect. Abstract: A prenatal ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) is a rare entity which may present as an intra-abdominal cyst. Due to its low incidence, optimal management and timing for intervention remain uncertain. This report presents a case of an intra-abdominal cystic structure in a female fetus, one of the two fetuses in a dichorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy, detected during routine fetal sonographic surveillance at 30 weeks of gestation. Further fetal evaluation detected the sonographic triad of an ovarian cystic mass, polyhydramnios and signs of fetal virilizations, requiring us to consider the presence of an atypical, ovarian androgen secreting tumor. Following delivery, acute ovarian torsion and intracystic hemorrhage required emergent surgical intervention, confirming the diagnosis of JGCT. Following surgical treatment, laboratory, clinical, and morphological features improved progressively.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To evaluate a possible correlation between a new variable-persistent breech presentation-and the success rate of external cephalic version (ECV). METHODS This was a retrospective study of ECVs performed from January 2008 through January 2019 in an Israeli tertiary care hospital. The study group included all pregnant women who underwent an ECV at or beyond 37 weeks of gestation. Persistent breech presentation was defined as persistent breech presentation during all ultrasound examinations performed between the anatomy scan at mid-pregnancy and the gestational week when ECV was attempted. Women in whom cephalic presentation was documented at least once on these ultrasound examinations were defined as not having persistent breech presentation. The primary outcome was defined as the success rate of ECV, and the secondary outcome was defined as the mode of delivery after a successful ECV. RESULTS We identified 1,271 women with breech presentation during the study period. They had undergone median of five (range 2-7) ultrasound examinations. External cephalic version was attempted in 684 women (53.8%), with a success rate of 61.5%. Abstract: Women with a successful vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) have less morbidity than women undergoing repeat cesarean delivery. Although several scores and models predict VBAC success, none focus on pregnant women with pre-labor rupture of membranes (PROM). We evaluated different clinical variables that might predict the likelihood of VBAC success in women with PROM.A retrospective, 5-year study in a large referral center from December 2013 to December 2018. Inclusion criteria were women with singleton pregnancy, at or beyond 37 weeks' gestation, admitted with spontaneous PROM, with one previous cesarean delivery that consented trial of labor. Exclusion criteria were history of two cesarean deliveries, multiple gestations or obstetrical contraindications for TOLAC, including maternal request for repeat cesarean delivery. Variables associated with successful VBA C were identified using multivariate logistic regression.Of 302 women in the cohort, 74.8% (226/302) delivered vaginally (successful VBAC) and 25.2% (76/302) by repeat CD (failed TOLAC). Multiple logistic regression showed that duration of PROM-to-delivery time was the only significant factor associated with successful TOLAC (78% delivered vaginally within 24 h and 93.3% within 36 h), while none of the other variables (maternal age, gravidity, BMI, gestational and birthweight at delivery, effacement or station at admission, previous indication for cesarean delivery, time interval between previous and current delivery, presence of meconium-stained liquor, and documented temperature38 °C) were associated with the prediction of successful VBAC.Women with spontaneous pre-labor PROM and previous cesarean delivery have high success rates of VBAC. The only significant variable associated with successful TOLAC in women with spontaneous PROM at term was the duration of PROM-to-delivery time. Our findings suggest that the success rate of VBAC is likely multifactorial, not-necessarily related to a specific underlying factor, and in the absence of contraindications, a fair trial of labor after cesarean delivery is justified.

Abstract: Correction: Chemical Senses, Volume 46, 2021, bjab050, https://doi.org/10.1093/chemse/bjab050 Published: 08 December 2021 Recent anecdotal and scientific reports have provided evidence of a link between COVID-19 and chemosensory impairments, such as anosmia. However, these reports have downplayed or failed to distinguish potential effects on taste, ignored chemesthesis, and generally lacked quantitative measurements. Here, we report the development, implementation, and initial results of a multilingual, international questionnaire to assess self-reported quantity and quality of perception in 3 distinct chemosensory modalities (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) before and during COVID-19. In the first 11 days after questionnaire launch, 4039 participants (2913 women, 1118 men, and 8 others, aged 19-79) reported a COVID-19 diagnosis either via laboratory tests or clinical assessment. Importantly, smell, taste, and chemesthetic function were each significantly reduced compared to their status before the disease. Difference scores (maximum possible change +/- 100) revealed a mean reduction of smell (-79.7 +/- 28.7, mean +/- standard deviation), taste (-69.0 +/- 32.6), and chemesthetic (-37.3 +/- 36.2) function during COVID-19. Qualitative changes in olfactory ability (parosmia and phantosmia) were relatively rare and correlated with smell loss. Importantly, perceived nasal obstruction did not account for smell loss. Furthermore, chemosensory impairments were similar between participants in the laboratory test and clinical assessment groups. These results show that COVID-19-associated chemosensory impairment is not limited to smell but also affects taste and chemesthesis.The multimodal impact of COVID-19 and the lack of perceived nasal obstruction suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may disrupt sensory-neural mechanisms.

6. Transvaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Uterosacral Ligament Hysteropexy: An Innovative Approach for Treatment of Uterine Prolapse

Abstract: Study Objective Transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) was previously described as a feasible approach to perform several procedures including hysterectomy followed by uterosacral ligament suspension [ 1 , 2 ]. Approaching the cul-de-sac with vNOTES while the uterus is intact allowing access to the uterosacral ligaments. This enables attainment of apical support by placing sutures on the ligaments, shortening them, and reinforcing their attachment to the cervix. The objective of this video is to demonstrate a surgical technique for vNOTES uterosacral ligament hysteropexy (ULH). Design Stepwise demonstration of the technique with narrated video footage. This video report is part of an institutional, investigational review board–approved study. Setting Academic tertiary referral center. Interventions This video presents our team's vNOTES technique for ULH in a woman aged 37 years (gravida 3 para 3) who presented with pelvic organ prolapse quantification stage 3 symptomatic uterine prolapse. The patient requested uterine prolapse repair surgery while retaining the uterus. After performing a posterior colpotomy and entering the posterior cul-de-sac, the alexis and then the GelPOINT V-path transvaginal access platform (Applied Medical, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) were placed into the vagina. Three trocars were inserted into the port. We used a 10-mm scope with a 30°-angle view. The instruments included a needle driver and a clinch grasper. The next step was to identify the uterosacral ligamentous structures. Once identified, 2 absorbable vicryl sutures and 1 nonabsorbable Ti-cron suture were placed on each ligament and then secured with large bites into the junctional portion of the uterosacral ligament with the posterior aspect of the cervix. The GelPOINT was then extracted, and the sutures locked in place to shorten the uterosacral ligaments and reinforce their attachment to the cervix. After all the suspensory sutures were tied, cystoscopy was performed to assess ureteral patency. The vaginal incision was then reapproximated in a horizontal manner, using continuous absorbable suture. Conclusion vNOTES ULH appears to be feasible in women with uterine prolapse when uterus conservative treatment is desired. Advantages of this technique include good exposure of the ureter, lowering the risk of ureteric injury. In addition, the absence of incisions on the abdomen eliminates the risk of abdominal wound infection and incisional pain and yields a better cosmetic outcome. Further studies are needed to appraise the long-term outcomes and demonstrate the ultimate use of this modality.

Highspeed optical transceiver modules based on silicon photonic integrated circuits have been commercialized in recent years. Moreover, co-packaged optics (CPO) has become a hot topic and trend for the assembly solution of next generation high-speed switch, and is expected to replace the hot-pluggable optical transceiver modules in the near future.

Abstract: Conventional add-on feedback filters that are designed to compensate for midfrequency (mid-f) repeatable runout (RRO) in a hard disk drive (HDD) servo system either have a long filter transient or constitute a large sensitivity hump as well as poor stability margins. This paper presents a novel linear time-varying (LTV) group filtering scheme for the compensation of a few mid-f RRO harmonics. While having a short filter transient that ensures fast disturbance attenuation, the proposed filter does not constitute to any substantial unnecessary sensitivity function gain amplification at the steady state. Simulation and implementation results show the effectiveness of this group filtering scheme. Abstract: This paper proposes modifications to enhance the original generalized Kalman-Yakubovic-Popov (G-KYP) lemma-based sensitivity function shaping technique that Q-parameterizes the controller and solves for the desired finite impulse response filter Q (z) using linear matrix inequalities (LMI) optimization. By representing Q(z) with an infinite impulse response filter and including an extra LMI that is derived based on the bounded real lemma into the original LMI optimization algorithm, our modifications avoid such problems as unnecessary increase and decrease in sensitivity gain at various frequency ranges, large sensitivity peak, degradation in noise rejection, and insufficient stability robustness against plant uncertainty. In other words, the proposed scheme achieves a better compromise between disturbance and noise rejection performance and stability robustness. The proposed control design was applied to a servo track writing platform. Experimental results show that the control design based on our proposed scheme further reduces the true PES NRRO 3[gamma] from 6 nm to 5.7 nm and improves the closed-loop stability robustness by 5.1%. 10. Modeling and control of the yaw channel of a UAV helicopter

Abstract: We present in this paper the modeling and flight-control-system design for the yaw channel of an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) helicopter using a newly developed composite nonlinear feedback (CNF)-control technique. The CNF-control method has been proven to be capable of yielding a fast transient response with no or very minimal overshoot in tracking a specific target. From the actual flight tests on our UAV helicopter, it has been found that the commonly used yaw dynamical model for the UAV helicopter proposed in the literature is very rough and inaccurate, which might cause the helicopter to shake severely in certain flight conditions. This motivates us to first obtain a more accurate model for the yaw channel of our UAV helicopter. The CNF-control method is then utilized to design an efficient control law, which gives excellent overall performance. In particular, our design has achieved a Level I performance according to the standards set for military rotorcraft. The results are verified through actual flight tests. 11. A minimal harmonic controller for a STATCOM

Abstract: In this paper, a novel controller with fixed modulation index (MI) and variable dc capacitor voltage reference to minimize voltage and current harmonics is presented for a distribution static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The STATCOM with the proposed controller consists of a three-phase voltage-sourced inverter and a dc capacitor and is used to provide reactive power compensation and regulate ac system bus voltage with minimum harmonics. A systematic design procedure based on pole-zero cancellation, root locus method, and pole assignment method has been developed to determine proper parameters for the current regulator, the dc voltage controller, and the ac voltage controller of the STATCOM. With the proposed STATCOM controller, harmonic distortions in the inverter output current and voltage can be reduced since the MI is held constant at unity in steady state. In addition, a fast adjustment in the STATCOM output reactive power is achieved to regulate the ac bus voltage through the adjustment of the dc voltage reference during the transient period. Simulation and experimental results for the steady-state operating condition and transient operating conditions for the system subjected to a reactive current reference step change, a three-phase line to neutral fault, and a step load change are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Abstract: BackgroundCOVID-19 has heterogeneous manifestations, though one of the most common symptoms is a sudden loss of smell (anosmia or hyposmia). We investigated whether olfactory loss is a reliable predictor of COVID-19.MethodsThis preregistered, cross-sectional study used a crowdsourced questionnaire in 23 languages to assess symptoms in individuals self-reporting recent respiratory illness. We quantified changes in chemosensory abilities during the course of the respiratory illness using 0-100 visual analog scales (VAS) for participants reporting a positive (C19+; n=4148) or negative (C19-; n=546) COVID-19 laboratory test outcome. Logistic regression models identified singular and cumulative predictors of COVID-19 status and post-COVID-19 olfactory recovery.ResultsBoth C19+ and C19-groups exhibited smell loss, but it was significantly larger in C19+ participants (mean±SD, C19+: -82.5±27.2 points; C19-: -59.8±37.7). Smell loss during illness was the best predictor of COVID-19 in both single and cumulative feature models (ROC AUC=0.72), with additional features providing negligible model improvement. VAS ratings of smell loss were more predictive than binary chemosensory yes/no-questions or other cardinal symptoms, such as fever or cough. Olfactory recovery within 40 days was reported for ∼50% of participants and was best predicted by time since illness onset.ConclusionsAs smell loss is the best predictor of COVID-19, we developed the ODoR-19 tool, a 0-10 scale to screen for recent olfactory loss. Abstract: Contains fulltext : 228204.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) In a preregistered, cross-sectional study we investigated whether olfactory loss is a reliable predictor of COVID-19 using a crowdsourced questionnaire in 23 languages to assess symptoms in individuals self-reporting recent respiratory illness. We quantified changes in chemosensory abilities during the course of the respiratory illness using 0-100 visual analog scales (VAS) for participants reporting a positive (C19+; n=4148) or negative (C19-; n=546) COVID-19 laboratory test outcome. Logistic regression models identified univariate and multivariate predictors of COVID-19 status and post-COVID-19 olfactory recovery. Both C19+ and C19- groups exhibited smell loss, but it was significantly larger in C19+ participants (mean±SD, C19+: -82.5±27.2 points; C19-: -59.8±37.7). Smell loss during illness was the best predictor of COVID-19 in both univariate and multivariate models (ROC AUC=0.72). Additional variables provide negligible model improvement. VAS ratings of smell loss were more predictive than binary chemosensory yes/no-questions or other cardinal symptoms (e.g., fever). Olfactory recovery within 40 days of respiratory symptom onset was reported for ~50% of participants and was best predicted by time since respiratory symptom onset. We find that quantified smell loss is the best predictor of COVID-19 amongst those with symptoms of respiratory illness. To aid clinicians and contact tracers in identifying individuals with a high likelihood of having COVID-19, we propose a novel 0-10 scale to screen for recent olfactory loss, the ODoR-19. Abstract: Currently, position sensors other than the read/write head are not embedded into current hard disk drives (HDDs) due to signal-to-noise ratio and nanometer resolution issues. Moreover, a noncollocated sensor fusion creates nonminimum phase zero dynamics which degrades the tracking performance. In this paper, the singular perturbation theory is applied to decompose the voice coil motor's (VCM's) and induced PZT active suspension's dynamics into fast and slow subsystems, respectively. The control system is decomposed into fast and slow time scales for controller designs, and control effectiveness is increased to tackle more degrees-of-freedom via an inner loop vibration suppression with measured high-frequency VCM's and PZT active suspension's dynamics from the piezoelectric elements in the suspension. Experimental results on a commercial HDD with a laser doppler vibrometer show the effective suppression of the VCM and PZT active suspension's flexible resonant modes, as well as an improvement of 39.9% in 3[sigma] position error signal during track following when compared to conventional notch-based servos. Abstract: The spectra of disturbances and noises affecting precise servo positioning for ultrahigh-density storage in future hard disk drives are time-varying and remain unknown. In this paper, we propose an online iterative control algorithm that sets the measured position error signal (PES) into the servo system to achieve high track densities by minimizing the square of the [[ETA].sub.2]-norm of the transfer function from nonrepeatable run-out (NRRO) disturbances to the true PES. It is not necessary to solve any algebraic Riccati equations and linear matrix inequalities. The algorithm constructs an online repeatable run-out estimator to extract NRRO components for gradient estimates, thereby preventing the controller parameters from being trapped in a local minima. Experimental results on a PC-based servo system for a spinstand show an improvement of 22% in 3[sigma] NRRO and suppression of baseline NRRO spectrum. 16. Improving transient performance in tracking general references using composite nonlinear feedback control and its application to high-speed XY-table positioning mechanism

Abstract: We adopt in this paper the newly developed composite nonlinear feedback (CNF) control method to track general target references for systems with input saturation. The original formulation of the CNF control technique is only applicable to set-point tracking, in which the target reference is set to be a constant. In this paper, a reference generator, which is able to produce more general reference signals such as sinusoidal and other waves, will be proposed to supplement the CNF control technique to yield a good performance. The resulting control law comprises the reference generator and a modified CNF control law, which is proven to be capable of tracking a target reference with fast settling time and minimal overshoot. Simulation and experimental results on an XY-table show that the proposed technique gives a very satisfactory performance. 17. An analytical approach to harmonic analysis and controller design of a STATCOM

Abstract: An analytical approach to harmonic analysis of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on Bessel functions of the first kind is described and a novel STATCOM controller with a fixed modulation index reference to minimize voltage and current harmonics is presented in this paper. Harmonic analysis of the STATCOM using the proposed analytical approach reveals that the total harmonic distortion of the STATCOM output voltage is minimal as the modulation index is fixed at unity at steady state. Then, a STATCOM controller with an adjustable modulation index during the transient period is designed by the pole assignment method to regulate ac system bus voltage in a very efficient manner. By comparing results obtained from the analytical approach, the computer simulations, and the experiments, it is concluded that the proposed analytical approach gives harmonic spectra which are very close to those from simulations and experiments. In addition, the step load change testings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed STATCOM controller in regulating ac bus voltage. Abstract: In this paper, the output feedback [H.sub.[infiniti]] controller design problem is addressed for linear systems subject to sensor nonlinearity. First, the existence condition of an output feedback controller is derived for systems with sensor sector nonlinearity. A design method for the output feedback [H.sub.[infiniti]] controller is proposed using a linear-matrix inequality (LMI) based approach. The result is then applied to the design of a regional output feedback [H.sub.[infiniti]] controller for the systems subject to sensor saturation. An LMI optimization based approach is proposed to computing the feedback matrices of the regional output feedback [H.sub.[infiniti]] controller. At last a numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of the results. Abstract: The inner-outer factorization of the transfer function matrix of a linear time-invariant system has been an important algebraic problem in a variety of areas in electrical engineering, including systems and control analysis and design. This paper gives an explicit state space-based algorithm for the inner-outer factorization of the transfer function matrix of a general discrete-time linear system. More specifically, the algorithm applies to any discrete-time linear system whose transfer function is proper and stable.

Abstract: Mental health service is an important system. An investigation of 257 employees leads to the fol-lowing conclusions. 1) The overall situation of mental health service system in universities remains well (M = 3.62) after management training (M = 2.85). 2) There are significant differences in the second-level indicators of service effects in mental health service system. 3) There are significant differences between genders and among service providers in universities. The paper concludes that the mental health service system oriented to mental promotion and student-centered principle should be established in universities to improve the mental health service.

Abstract: Background Numerous techniques have been employed to treat myofascial pain syndrome. Self-myofascial release (SMFR) is a relatively new technique of soft tissue mobilization. The simplicity and portability of the SMFR tools allow it to be easily implemented in any type of fitness or rehabilitation program. It is an active method and can be used by anyone at home or at the workplace. Objective To review the current methods of SMFR, their mechanisms, and efficacy in treating myofascial pain, improving muscle flexibility and strength. Methods PubMed, Google Scholar, and PEDro databases were searched without search limitations from inception until July 2016 for terms relating to SMFR. Results and conclusions During the past decade, therapists and fitness professionals have implemented SMFR mainly via foam rolling as a recovery or maintenance tool. Researchers observed a significant increase in the joint range of motion after using the SMFR technique and no decrease in muscle force or changes in performance after treatment with SMFR. SMFR has been widely used by health-care professionals in treating myofascial pain. However, we found no clinical trials which evaluated the influence of SMFR on myofascial pain. There is an acute need for these trials to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of SMFR in the treatment of the myofascial syndrome.

Abstract: Rationale: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent swollen, deep, and painful abscesses. Several autoimmune conditions have been shown to be associated with HS including inflammatory bowel disease and spondyloarthropathies. Patient concerns: 40-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) presented with recurrent abscesses and nodules on her extremities. Diagnosis: Early considerations related the described dermatologic findings to the dermatologic manifestations of SLE, however findings from lesion biopsy were suggestive of HS. Interventions: Prednisone and antibiotic therapy with clindamycin were started. Subsequently upon discharge, the patient was also treated with rifampicin and azathioprine. Outcome: In this communication, we demonstrate a case of HS in a patient with SLE that significantly improved under antibiotic and immunosuppressant therapy. Lessons: HS can coexist in patients with SLE. Evidence pertinent to the etiology of HS and its association with other autoimmune conditions implies a possible denominator in the disease etiopathogenesis. Increased awareness of the co-occurrence of the two conditions calls for increased efforts to devise better treatment modalities.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a fault detection, isolation and fault-tolerant control scheme for a class of nonlinear uncertain systems with possible state and sensor failures. First, a model-based nonlinear estimator using input-output information is designed by considering both state and sensor failures. This estimator is used to generate the residual signal which is for detecting both state and sensor failures. Second, multiple fault estimators are proposed to design fault isolation scheme for finding the fault type or location. Third, utilizing fault estimated, a fault tolerant control algorithm is designed to maintain the system operation continuously after a fault is detected. Finally, simulation is given to demonstrate how the proposed scheme can detect a fault occurrence, isolate the fault and engage the fault-tolerant control for the one degree of freedom robot.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for urinary retention after hemorrhoidectomy. With the approval of West China Hospital of Sichuan University Ethics Board, data were abstracted from 961 charts of patients who underwent hemorrhoidectomy from January 1, 2009, to June 30, 2011. The outcome was urinary retention in the first 24 hours after surgery. Risk factors were identified using multivariable logistic regression, and they were expressed as odds ratios or 95% confidence intervals. The overall urinary retention rate was 14.8% (n = 142). Significant risk factors associated with postoperative urinary retention included female gender, anesthesia methods, severity of hemorrhoid, a large amount of intravenous fluid administered perioperatively, and length of hospital stay. Logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender (odds ratio, 2.607; p.01), sacral anesthesia (odds ratio, 2.481; p = .02), more than 3 hemorrhoids resected (odds ratio, 2.658; p.01), hemorrhoids having 4 degrees of severity (odds ratio, 3.101; p.01), intravenous fluids700 ml (odds ratio, 1.597; p = .02), and length of stay more than 7 days (odds ratio, 1.852; p.01) were significant predictors of urinary retention post-hemorrhoidectomy.

Abstract: The Internet provides a new environment for developing a variety of applications for educational and research purposes. This paper presents the implementation of a web-based laboratory experiment on a coupled tank apparatus, a Multi-input-Multi-output (MIMO) system. The web-based laboratory has been developed to serve students and staff in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The laboratory is an educational tool for teaching students the basic principles and methodology in performing a series of experiments on a coupled tank apparatus at any time and from any location through the Internet. With the capability to implement strategies for manual, proportional integral derivative (PID), general state-space, and fuzzy logic control, the laboratory also provides a platform for research staff to test control algorithms. Video conferencing has been used to provide audio and video feedback, with a camera mounted on a movable platform so that the user can control both the zooming and viewing angle. 37. Is Cloud Bursting/Hybrid Cloud Advantageous to a Firm Who Has On-Site Capacity?

Abstract: Cloud bursting is a hybrid computing resource model in which a firm firstly uses its own internal computing resources and then bursts to a public cloud for extra resources as needed. This paper develops quantitative models to examine whether a firm who has on-site capacity can be benefited from cloud bursting. If a firm adopts a hybrid cloud, while it benefits from immediate, extra computing resources, and scalability, but it assumes the risks of security threats and service outages from this external resource. If a firm uses only a private cloud, while security threats and service outage risks may be far lower than with a hybrid cloud, it may lose the opportunity to profit due at peak times due to limited resource capacity. Overall, we show that firms can benefit from the hybrid clouds if risk is considerably low while firms would benefit from using the private clouds if risk is considerably high. Interestingly, firms may display counterintuitive cloud deployments when facing risk of outage that one firm deploys a hybrid cloud and another deploys a private cloud when risk of outage is considerably low and both firms prefer the hybrid clouds when risk of outage is considerably high.

Abstract: We present in this paper some preliminary research work carried out for SheLion, a vision-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed and built by the UAV research team at the National University of Singapore. Unlike HeLion, a twin brother of SheLion, the latter is equipped with an onboard camera and image processing system, which is capable of detecting and tracking ground targets. We first give in this work a brief introduction to the UAV system, which consists of a bare helicopter, an onboard flight system and a ground supporting unit. We then focus on the development of a real-time vision algorithm, which is able to efficiently detect and identify ground targets. Experimental result based on images captured in actual flight tests is also presented.

Abstract: An autonomous flight control law applicable to full-envelope was designed in this manuscript for a small-scale unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) helicopter to fly autonomously. The UAV helicopter was constructed based on a radio-controlled hobby helicopter by assembling an avionic system. The autonomous flight control law applicable to full-envelope was designed using a decentralized design methodology incorporating a newly developed nonlinear control techniques as well as dynamic inversion. The designed autonomous flight control law was implemented and verified in flight tests with the UAV helicopter. The flight test results demonstrate that the designed autonomous flight control law successfully drives the small-scale UAV helicopter to fly autonomously. The scheme of the autonomous flight control is applicable to flight control design of other UAVs.

Abstract: A novel photoelectric measurement method for displacement and angle based on laser triangulation is proposed in this paper. The angle that the measured object turns is obtained by geometry transformation of the displacements measured from dual laser-triangulation devices. Thus the measurement of displacement and angle is achieved simultaneously. Moreover, the influence caused by environment disturbances and system noise on measurement results is largely reduced by mathematically processing by means of subdivision iteration algorithm. So the measurement precision is improved. The feasibility of this method is verified by an experiment.

Abstract: A novel contact-free micromotion stage based on magnetic suspension technique is proposed. In this micromotion stage, a moving plate is driven by Lorentz force that acts on four groups of Halbach arrays by AC windings. And the plate is levitated by magnetized force that acts on four electromagnets by DC coils. Namely the designed stage is driven by DC-AC hybrid actuation. This paper deals with analysis of the actuator with Halbach arrays on the basis of the analytical two-dimensional field solutions and predicts magnetic field, thrust and flux linkage. The results are validated by comparison with finite element analysis. A dynamic equation and a strategy of controlling are obtained by the analysis. A H∞ robust controller of the micromotion stage due to parametric uncertainty and exogenous disturbances is constructed. And the simulating results show that the H∞ controller is robust stable for the modeling perturbation and has excellent anti-disturbance ability, that micromotion stage is reliable and precision. Through comparison with PID, the H∞ controller has higher precision. Thus the constructed H∞ robust controller of the micromotion stage is effective and suitable.

Abstract: The authors present a brief overview of the kinds of technologies capable of supporting the switched multimegabit data service (SMDS). SMDS has been defined in a technology-independent manner and can be supported by a number of packet switching technologies, two of which are highlighted. One of them, a 150 Mb/s Metrocore prototype of a shared-medium transwitch, is currently demonstratable with switching functions distributed among nodes. The capacity of such a shared-medium network can be increased by adding parallel channels. The other, the Batcher-banyan packet switch, can support a significant amount of traffic with a more traditional centralized architecture and parallel service processors. >
